CrossFit an exercise concept by former gymnast Greg Glassman, was originally developed as an exercise program combining training techniques from various sports that could benefit everyone. This multi-faceted fitness program, by scaling the intensity and skill level of each workout, is ideal for people of all ages and experience levels. CrossFit is designed to improve fitness in ten areas: Cardio/Respiratory Endurance Stamina Strength Flexibility Power Speed Coordination Agility Balance Accuracy The CrossFit program incorporates full body motions and specific body weight exercises including but not limited to: gymnastic movements, jumping, climbing, Russian kettlebell training, rowing, and more randomly combined movements at various intensities with short rest periods to achieve optimal results. Because each CrossFit workout will be constantly changing and consistently challenging, there is little room for your body to plateau, your results to stagnate, and for your routine to bore you.

The CrossFit training program: it’s hard; it’s simple; it works. It’s for Everyone. 6

San Joaquin County’s only

full-time practice specializing in high risk pregnancies

High-Risk Pregnancy Care

Having a baby is an exciting, life-changing event for many couples. For those with pregnancy complications or medical problems, it also can be a stressful time. Three-fourths of problems in pregnancy can be predicted from a patient’s medical history and physical exam. However, problems can arise in even the healthiest patients. That’s why it’s helpful for expectant parents to have experts on their team to help guide them through the ups and downs of their 9-month journey.

What is a Perinatologist?

A perinatologist or maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) physician is an obstetrician with special training devoted to caring for pregnant women with conditions that put the mother or the developing fetus, or both, at increased risk for complications during or after pregnancy and birth. Perinatologists are capable of making difficult diagnoses and detailed care plans, and performing specialized procedures such as amniocentesis and Doppler ultrasound examination.

Where can I find a Perinatologist in Stockton?

Located in Stockton and serving San Joaquin County, Valley Perinatal & Genetics Diagnostic Center with Andrew Chao, MD is San Joaquin County’s only full-time practice specializing in caring for pregnant women who are high risk for reasons that may include: • Chronic medical conditions such as heart disease or diabetes • Family history of genetic disorders • Problems with previous pregnancies such as preterm labor or miscarriage • Pregnancy with multiples (twins, triplets) • Over age 35 at the time of conception • Structural abnormalities (birth defects) • Genetic disorders such as Down syndrome • Restricted growth in the womb We work hand-in-hand with patients and their obstetricians to monitor health concerns and review prenatal tests and ultrasounds. Before scheduling an MFM consultation or prenatal test, you should ask your primary caregiver for a referral. Please call (209) 933-9900 for more information.

MEDICAL GUIDE | hearing lost & found

HEARING Lost & Found BY AMY WUSSTIG, AU.D., CCC-A

Director, Hearing & Balance Center, UOP Department of Audiology

As an audiologist who evaluates hearing and fits hearing aids, there are three questions my patients always ask. First is, “Do I really have a hearing loss?” followed by, “Do I really need hearing aids?” and finally, “Why do hearing aids cost so much?” The following will provide some answers to those questions.

Symptoms of Hearing Loss

By the time someone actually makes an appointment for a hearing test, they have usually been experiencing symptoms of hearing loss for years, although perhaps without really noticing. Since

24

SAN JOAQUIN HEALTH

& MEDICAL GUIDE 2012

hearing loss is usually painless and progressive, the person with the loss does not really think they have much of a problem. It is their spouse, children and other family members who have been complaining about the person’s inability to hear well. Usually the afflicted person reports that they could “hear just fine if everyone would just stop mumbling!” Other symptoms include ringing or rushing sounds in the ears, having to turn the television up quite loud and difficulty understanding conversations at restaurants. Ultimately, as they feel left out of conversations, people experiencing significant hearing loss begin to avoid difficult hearing situations al-

together and eventually become isolated. Avoiding this withdrawal from social situations is what we hope to accomplish with hearing aids.

Do I Really Have a Hearing Loss?

The only way to know if a hearing loss is truly present is to get a thorough hearing test. The test should include a tympanogram (a quick check to make sure the eardrum is moving normally), pure tone testing (to determine the type and the degree of hearing loss), and speech testing (to discover how clear speech is perceived in the auditory system).

MEDICAL GUIDE | hearing lost & found

Why Do Hearing Aids Cost So Much?

Hearing aids from most of the major manufacturers are priced on a tiered performance system. The features the manufacturer has enabled on the microchip inside the hearing aid (usually with the aim of helping with background noise) determines the price. All manufacturers have many sizes and shapes of devices, but the style of the hearing aid does not really affect cost. Hearing aids cost approximately $3500 to $6500 dollars for a pair, which usually includes all of the appointments needed for fitting and maintaining them over the years and warranties. No matter where the hearing aids are purchased, it is mandated that they all have a 30-day trial period in which the devices can be returned for a full refund. Hearing aid fittings are a process and take time. So, in order to make a successful transition, it is imperative to have both patience and a commitment to regaining the hearing ability that has been lost.

Conductive or mixed hearing losses are often treatable by medical physicians and suggest a problem with sound traveling through the ear canal, eardrum and the bones of the middle ear. Common causes are earwax and fluid behind the eardrum. The most common type of hearing loss is called sensorineural, and suggests damage to the inner ear. The most common causes with this kind of hearing loss are aging and noise damage. There is no cure for sensorineural hearing loss, so hearing aids are usually recommended.

SAN JOAQUIN HEALTH

& MEDICAL GUIDE 2012

Do I Really Need Hearing Aids?

This must ultimately be determined by the individual with the hearing loss. If the hearing loss is causing difficulty with communication daily, the answer is usually “yes.” The primary predictor for success with hearing aids is the person’s motivation to use them. It takes time for the brain to adapt to hearing through the aids, though, so it is imperative that the person is committed to wearing them all day, every day. If they do not do this, the hearing aids will be worn less and less often, and eventually end up in the sock drawer. WWW.SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

MEDICAL GUIDE | benefits of resistance training

The

Benefits of Resistance BY NISSA HALLQUIST

When it comes to women’s exercise regimens, the focus is generally on losing weight and toning up. Very few want to bulk up, which is the prime reason why they tend to stay away from resistance training and especially weight training. But such bulking up is a myth. What you may be surprised to learn is that a regimen including resistance and/or weight training can get you leaner and meaner faster than you might with other exercises. Resistance training is pretty self-explanatory. It’s exercising against resistance, such as bands, the body’s own weight or outside weights. This latter form of resistance training is what is commonly referred to as weight training. In other words, weight training is always resistance training, but resistance training isn’t always weight training.

28

SAN JOAQUIN HEALTH

& MEDICAL GUIDE 2012

Resistance training simultaneously builds lean muscle and strength while also providing a thorough cardio workout for the whole body. According to Ben Mackie of Fitness 360 in Stockton, more lean muscle means greater metabolism and lots of calories burned, both during and after workouts. Weight training is often misinterpreted as a realm for body builders only. However, it simply adds more resistance to resistance training, thereby increasing the positive results. But it’s important to remember that more care needs to be taken in regards to alignment and technique to prevent injury. A fitness professional can get you there, as well as make sure that you are achieving your toning and weight loss goals in the process. Santos Lara, a certified strength and cardio specialist with InShape in downtown Stockton has found that weight training, if done properly, is the only way to really get the body toned. It challenges the muscle fibers and makes them strong and defined. More than that, Lara has found that another unexpected benefit is the overall sense of confidence weight training brings. “It’s empowering to women,” he says. “They’re surprised and then pleased to think ‘I can do this.’” Co-owner of Crossfit CenCal with her husband, Brandon, Lindsay Taylor has been actively training and competing in weight lifting for nearly a year now. Not only is she stronger and more confident, she’s also leaner than she’s ever been in her life. She’s so convinced of the physical and psychological benefits of weight training for women that she’s started a blog outlining her training regimen and challenges other women to try it out.

Resistance Training At Home

When you’re ready to start incorporating resistance training into your workout, Ben Mackie has devised a circuit of three key moves to tone up the entire body:

Lunges (lower body):

Hands on hips, step forward and drop your body straight down. At the lowest point, your knee should form a 90-degree angle and be directly above your ankle. Step back and repeat with the other leg. Do 15 times, each leg.

Push-ups (upper body):

Keep hands at approximate shoulder width apart and the rest of your body straight through to the toes (or knees). Lower your body until your chest touches the floor, then rise back up using just your arms. Do 15 times.

Plank pose (core): Move down onto your elbows and toes. Keep your head up and hold your body straight 10-20 seconds.

Perform this circuit 3-4 times for a well-rounded resistance training workout. Increase the number of repetitions and time held in the plank pose to build up endurance.

MOUTH is SAYING

About Your

HE ALTH BY NISSA HALQUIST

People tend to think of the mouth and the body as two completely separate entities. There’s a dentist for one, a doctor for the other, and neither the ‘twain shall meet. But the mouth is very much connected to your body. In fact, a problem in your mouth could actually point to something bigger happening elsewhere. There are many medical issues that can show some sign of their presence right there in your mouth. Dentists Todd Franklin, DDS, in Lodi, and Ronald Norriesta, DDS in

30

SAN JOAQUIN HEALTH

& MEDICAL GUIDE 2012

Stockton have both seen such issues arise, and have made it their duty to bridge the perceived gap between dental and medical care. “There is a cooperative approach between dentists and physicians to co-diagnose and treat these patients,” Dr. Franklin states. “Dentists must become very good diagnosticians and look beyond just the oral environment.”

Swollen Gums

Swollen gums are usually just taken as a sign of gum disease. However, they can also point to heart disease and diabetes. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, leads to general inflammation of the body’s tissues, including the gums.

Diabetes wears down the immune system, leaving the entire body—including the mouth—prone to infections. In the mouth, diabetes manifests itself as gum disease, complete with inflamed and bleeding gums. It can also extend into bone loss (the jaw) and loosened teeth.

Pale or Discolored Gums

Dr. Franklin has also noted how vitamin deficiencies, especially B12 and iron, can reveal themselves in the mouth through a burning sensation of the tongue and pale, anemic gums. And the jaundice caused by advanced liver disease can also be detected in the yellowing of gum tissue (in addition to more common locations like the whites of the eyes and fingernails).

Dentists,

The New Cancer Fighters The line between dentistry and medicine has been blurred further with oral cancer screenings. As described by Anureet SohiThadwall, DDS of All About Smiles in Stockton, Sapphire Plus Lesion Detection is a screening done by your dentist in conjunction with a regular oral exam. It is quick and painless, using light to detect cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions that may not be readily visible. It is the number one way to detect and treat oral cancer at an early—and curable—stage.

esophagus and throat and even into the mouth. Evidence of this phenomenon can be found through the erosion of the backside of the front teeth.

Osteonecrosis

According to Dr. Norriesta, there is evidence that biophosphonhates used for the treatment of osteoporosis (such as Fosamax) can lead to osteonecrosis of the jaw (lesions in the gingiva that expose the bone of the mandible or maxilla).

Dry Mouth

There are so many potential medical causes for dry mouth, it’s hard to narrow them down. When it comes to diseases, dry mouth can be caused by Sjögren’s syndrome, HIV or AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, anemia, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, Parkinson’s disease, stroke or mumps. Dry mouth is also a possible side effect of numerous medications and medical treatments. As problems in the body can create problems in the mouth, so too can dental issues cause other issues throughout the body. Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is the primary source of many such systemic issues. This infectious swelling can move quickly and easily throughout the body via saliva or along the bloodstream. As such, any gum swelling that exists in a chronic and/or severe state can put strain on various sensitive organs and systems in the body. It can lead to heart disease, stroke, liver

problems from happening in the first place.

Similar results can also come from untreated cavities. These can lead to dental abscesses that leech their poisons to various parts of the body and contribute to inflammatory processes.

As Dr. Franklin points out, “Even with the recent advancement of research into the entire disease process, routine dental checkups still remains the first line of defense.” Dr. Norriesta agrees, but also recommends healthy lifestyle choices in general—brushing teeth correctly, eating right, exercise and no smoking—to keep both the teeth and the immune system healthy to prevent severe infections and other health

MEDICAL GUIDE | giving blood, saving lives

BY NISSA HALQUIST / PHOTOS BY DAN HOOD

GIVING BLOOD, SAVING LIVES Early in 1947, an 18 year-old woman was admitted to San Joaquin General Hospital with severe bleeding caused by a botched coat hanger abortion. She was quickly treated by Dr. Donald Harrington, but she’d lost too much blood and passed away. The next day, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dr. Neill Johnson treated another young woman with an ectopic pregnancy. She, too, died from massive blood loss. While tragic, the deaths of these two women were not in vain. They directly triggered the establishment of the first blood bank in the San Joaquin area.

34

SAN JOAQUIN HEALTH

& MEDICAL GUIDE 2012

So bothered by what they saw as preventable deaths, Dr. Harrington and Dr. Johnson complained to the regional Medical Society about the need for a local blood bank. The Society acquiesced, naming Harrington the director of a blood bank committee. This swiftly led to the opening of the San Joaquin area’s first blood bank in February of 1948, the Stockton Regional Blood Center, operated by the San Joaquin County chapter of the American Red Cross. A few years later, in 1954, the Delta Blood Bank was also established, and it remains a very active presence in and around the San Joaquin area. In the fifty-eight years since it was established, Delta Blood Bank has opened numerous permanent donor facilities. They also conduct mobile drives to meet the ongoing demand for blood by the region’s various hospitals and other medical facilities. WWW.SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

Since the 1980s, Sacramento-based BloodSource has also served the San Joaquin region (and especially St. Joseph’s Medical Center) through frequent mobile blood and marrow drives. And as of April, they established their first permanent donation center in Stockton to support their mobile units and to provide another convenient fixed location for area donors.   Over the years, certain practices and donor criteria have been established to make the donation process as safe and painless as possible for both the donor and the recipient. These days, it is impossible to get AIDS or any other disease by donating blood since the nurses use disposable, sterile, single-use needles.   According to Annie Stevenson of Delta Blood Bank, if you want to be a donor, you must be 17 years old and weight at least 110 pounds PUBLISHED YEARLY BY SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE

(or 16 years old with parental consent and body weight of 115 pounds). You need to be in generally good health, with regular iron levels. (Those with a low iron level must wait to donate until it improves.) And if you have been tattooed, you must wait one year before you are eligible to donate.   If you decide you want to donate blood, you can expect much the same process wherever you go:  General information such as your name, address, and birth date is taken. A driver’s license, military ID, or passport is required for first time donors. Your temperature is taken to be sure that you don’t have a low grade infection or are coming down with a cold.

MEDICAL GUIDE | giving blood, saving lives

BLOOD FACTS (Provided by Delta Blood Bank and BloodSource)

Statistics show that 25 percent or more of us will require blood at least once in our lifetime. Only 5 percent of eligible donors across the nation donate blood, but the number of transfusions nationwide increases by 9 percent every year. Every two seconds, someone in the US needs blood. Blood is perishable. Whole blood has a shelf life of forty-two days. Platelets have a shelf life of five days. One out of every seven hospitalized patients needs blood. A blood donation is one pint. The average adult has between ten and twelve pints of blood in their body. If fifty people donate, they could provide enough blood to take care of victims of a major car accident. If twenty people donate, they could help one burn victim. A single shock trauma victim can require 100 units of blood in just a few hours. Three teaspoons of blood can save a baby’s life. Approximately 40,000 pints of blood are used each day in the US.

36

SAN JOAQUIN HEALTH

& MEDICAL GUIDE 2012

Your medical history is taken by medical personnel (verifying your eligibility and making sure that you can donate without any harmful effects to you or the recipient).Your hemoglobin, pulse and blood pressure are also checked to be sure that you can safely give one pint of blood. Next, medical personnel will assign you a bed and disinfect your arm to reduce any risk of contamination. Your blood donation will take approximately five to ten minutes. Apart from the pinch of the initial needle stick, this is not an uncomfortable experience for most donors. Medical personnel will firmly press a piece of gauze on your arm and ask you to hold it up in the air for a couple of minutes to stop the blood flow and prevent bruising. A fifteen minute stay is required in the refreshment area while you have juice or coffee and cookies. This is to replace some of the fluid you have lost. (Donors should eat a good breakfast/ lunch on the day of donation to minimize any weakness or dizziness.) Your total blood volume is replaced within a few days. Since you make hemoglobin for red cells more slowly,

you won’t be eligible to donate again for eight weeks. The entire blood donation process takes only about sixty minutes. And given the ongoing demand for blood, it doesn’t sit around for long after it’s been donated. “Blood collected at our fixed sites and mobiles is collected several times a day by our drivers and transported to our lab, where it is made into different blood components” Stevenson explains. From there, “The blood undergoes thirteen different tests to assure that it is safe for transfusion.” After the blood is determined to be healthy, it is stored in highly regulated refrigerators until the hospitals call and request it for their patients. The blood is then delivered to the hospitals by the blood bank’s drivers. In 2001, Gino Frattaroli-Hebert was born with part of his heart missing. This defect required many surgeries and many pints of donated blood from BloodSource and other centers. He is now 10 years old, living with his family in Linden. Despite his health issues, Gino remains active and cheerful. WWW.SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

“Your Blood Donations Keep These Children Alive.”

Sofia and Anthony were born with a condition called Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency. Due to the lack of the pyruvate kinase enzyme, their blood cells fail to live their potential life span of approximately 120 days. Sofia is 3 ½ years old and has had over 70 blood transfusions to date. Anthony is 10 months old and has had 25 transfusions. There is no substitute for human blood and the volunteer blood donor is our only hope for patients needing transfusions.

JUST MY TYPE

There are four major blood types: Type A, Type B, Type AB, and Type O. These types are determined by the presence of A or B antigens on the surface of the red blood cells. These antigens can trigger a patient’s immune system to attack transfused blood of a different type, so typing and cross-matching are critical for safe and effective transfusion. Blood types are further defined by a third antigen called the Rh factor, which is either present (+) or absent (-). Type O has neither A nor B antigens on the red cells, and Type O-Negative has an absence of Rh factor as well. For this reason, Type O-Negative blood donors have been called “Universal Donors” because all patients can receive their blood for transfusion. Among the healthy adult population 17 years of age and older, the most common blood type is O Positive (39%), followed by A Positive (34%), B Positive (8.5%), O Negative (7%), A Negative (6%), AB Positive (3.5%), B Negative (1.5%) and the most rare, AB Negative (0.5%).

“Gino and I have learned that every second is precious and unique,” says Gino’s mother, Twana. “People who donate blood are helping others by giving them more seconds to live life. It’s a very special gift.”

In addition to these permanent blood centers, both BloodSource and Delta Blood Bank regularly conduct mobile blood drives. Check their respective websites or call about how to schedule a mobile drive at your business, school or church. You can also look into donating at any San Joaquin area hospital.

Taking Charge of Your

Health Care:

There’s an App For That One of the greatest tools a patient has for taking control of their health is communication. Unfortunately, such communication has not always been easily attainable; with a primary care physician, test results and medical records are inaccessible after business hours. 40

SAN JOAQUIN HEALTH

& MEDICAL GUIDE 2012

These days, through the embrace of modern technology, San Joaquin area hospitals are making it easier than ever to keep lines of communication open and their patients wellinformed. Email, online access to medical records and even smart phone applications have been designed to keep you in the know wherever you are, twenty-four seven. No appointment required.

Kaiser Permanente, in particular, is a leader in innovative approaches to delivering health care. Their fully electronic medical records, also known as HealthConnect, support their integrated model of health care delivery by uniting inpatient, outpatient, and support services (pharmacy, radiology and laboratory) records together in a single location. This allows for swift and smooth communication between departments and, as a result, faster and more comprehensive levels of care. WWW.SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

Through Kaiser Permanente’s My Health Manager, members are able to access much of their health records online. (kp.org) There they can also email their doctor, check most lab results, refill prescriptions and more. And as of January 2012, a mobile application for the website was released, making nine million records available to be securely viewed on Android and iPhone mobile devices. All of these initiatives have earned Kaiser multiple prestigious IT awards and have paved the way for other hospitals to follow suit.

And so they have. Dameron Hospital has established its own IT initiatives by offering patients electronic access to all labs, reports, vital signs and Chart Maxx (the name of their paperless medical records program). Dameron also provides an extensive online information center powered through WebMD, a centralized, convenient place for their patients to find health info and advice. Lodi Memorial Hospital has gone paperless with electronic medical records. And they’ve added wellness and health education videos and other features to their website (lodihealth. org) to enhance their patients’ knowledge and overall health care experience. Lodi Memorial also offers access to CaringBridge.org, which provides free websites for people with significant health issues to connect with family and friends.

Doctors Hospital utilizes a virtual nursery, and makes it easy for patients to find answers to their health questions with an online resource guide and interactive health tools at DoctorsManteca.com. They also have a feature on their website that allows you to “skip the waiting room” by checking in online to an emergency room or doctor’s office. Last but not least, Sutter Tracy Community Hospital allows their patients to access their medical records on the web through My Health Online. This online access is supplemented by an associated smartphone app, MyChart, which allows you to check your medical records on any iPhone, Android or Blackberry device. Another free health app, called iTriage, allows you to check your symptoms, look up conditions and find a doctor, clinic or emergency near you. And for the woman looking to gain control over her health, the Sutter Tracy website features a special section called MyLifeStages, offering information and advice, interactive tools and personal health risk assessments for women. (suttertracy.org)

St. Joseph’s Medical Center offers patients the access to free websites, called CarePages. Through StJosephsCares.org, patients can access an extensive health information section, including a comprehensive library of health topics and interactive tools, as well as online access to a broad selection of classes and health programs. In order to make the admission process as smooth as possible, St. Joseph’s also offers online pre-registration. In addition to a comprehensive guide to its various services, initiatives and health topics at sjgeneralhospital.com, San Joaquin General Hospital also has its very own Web Nursery. There, proud parents can show off their “web babies” to family and friends with a free birth announcement and photo of the newborn. PUBLISHED YEARLY BY SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE

MEDICAL GUIDE | mammogram

BY NISSA HALQUIST

Yes,

Mammogram To date, the greatest achievement in the battle against breast cancer has been early detection. While there is still no cure, technology and medical research have made leaps and bounds in catching this cancer before it has a chance to spread. You might think, why bother? No one in my family’s had breast cancer. While it’s true that family history has always been a good predictor of cancer, the great majority of breast cancers occur in women with no prior history, 85 percent in fact. That’s why it is so important to get regularly screened no matter what. Which means, yes, the dreaded mammogram. But according to Param Gill, MD, of P. Gill Obstetrics, the discomfort these days is minimal, and the results the test yields are far more accurate than ever before, making it quite worth your while. The entire process usually takes no more

42

SAN JOAQUIN HEALTH

& MEDICAL GUIDE 2012

than fifteen minutes. The patient is asked to strip from the waist up and stand at the mammogram machine. Each breast is compressed between two plates and x-rayed top to bottom, and now also side to side to get a more complete picture of the breast. Over the past three to five years, the results have been made even more precise through the use of digital imaging and computer analysis. Such technology is able to detect abnormalities previously undetectable, allowing for a diagnosis and preventative measures to be taken before the breast or one’s life is at risk. While it is agreed that incidences of breast cancer statistically increase with age, there is some debate as to when one should start getting screenings. Dr. Gill follows the current recommendation of the American Cancer Society, starting mammograms at age 40 and each year thereafter. In addition to regular mammograms, she further recommends other preventative measures like hands-on clinical breast checks and regular

self-examinations at home. And if you have a high risk for breast cancer, an MRI might also be recommended.

Losing BY NISSA HALQUIST

Weight

Without Losing

Your Mind If you find losing weight to be an impossible task, there are facilities in the San Joaquin area that can give you the tools to make losing weight—and keeping it off—faster, easier and safer than ever before. If you have been repeatedly unsuccessful losing weight through diet and exercise, your body mass index (BMI) is over 40 and/or you have severe weight-related health issues like Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea or high blood pressure, weight loss surgery could be a viable option. The most common type of bariatric surgery is gastric bypass, wherein the stomach is made smaller and food bypasses part of the small intestine. You feel fuller faster with less of the food eaten absorbed by the body. Gastric banding is a less invasive option that involves putting a silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. The band can be adjusted as needed and even removed once the desired weight loss has been achieved. Surgery is, of course, the extreme choice. Most people can lose weight through proper diet and exercise. While difficult, sometimes all that’s needed is some direction on how to eat and exercise properly to get to and maintain a healthy weight. Facilities like Medi-Fast, Ameri-Cal, and Physicians Weight Clinic use a combination of pre-packaged foods, exercise and counseling to provide moral support and a healthier way of looking at food.

44

SAN JOAQUIN HEALTH

& MEDICAL GUIDE 2012

According to Diana Coykendall of Medi-Fast, the counselor provides a sense of camaraderie and, especially, accountability. “They’re your cheerleader. And they help give you the strength to make the right decisions, even after you’ve finished the program.” Medi-Fast has proven to be so effective that it is specified to get people down to a safe weight for gastro-bypass surgery. Oftentimes, the Medi-Fast experience has proven to these people that they can lose the weight on their own, inspiring them to cancel the surgery.

The skin that you’re in: Keep it safer this summer You can often treat common skin problems at home with some simple techniques, but some problems may be more severe and even require medical attention. Warm, sunny weather usually means more family time, fresh fruits and vegetables, and outdoor activities.

Other ways to protect yourself from the sun include wearing protective clothing, such as:

While outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, or gardening are fun, they can also lead to skin cancer and some common health problems like sunburn, insect bites, or poison oak.

• Hats with wide brims that cover your neck, ears, eyes, and scalp. • Sunglasses with UV ray protection. • Loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing that covers your arms and legs.

Protecting your skin Most skin cancer can be prevented. Use the following tips to protect your skin from the sun. You may decrease your chances of developing skin cancer and help prevent wrinkles.

Avoid sun exposure The best way to prevent sunburn is to avoid sun exposure. Stay out of the midday sun (from 10 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon), which is the strongest sunlight. You can also calculate how much ultraviolet (UV) exposure you are getting by using the shadow rule: A shadow that is longer than you are means UV exposure is low; a shadow that is shorter than you are means the UV exposure is high. Sunscreen protection If you can’t avoid being in the sun, use a sunscreen to help protect your skin while you are in the sun. • Use a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 or higher. • Apply the sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going in the sun. • Apply sunscreen to all the skin that will be exposed to the sun, including the nose, ears, neck, scalp, and lips. It usually takes about 1 fl oz. (30 mL) to cover an adult’s body. • Re-apply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours while in the sun and after swimming or sweating a lot. • Use a higher SPF at higher elevations or in tropical climates. • Do not use tanning booths to get a tan. Artificial tanning devices can cause skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer.

Skin cancer detection tips Check your skin on a monthly basis. Note new marks or moles and whether

or not they have changed in size or appearance. Follow the “ABCDE rule” to distinguish a normal mole from melanoma: • Asymmetry: The two halves of a mole do not match. • Border Irregularity: The edges of the mole are ragged and uneven. • Color: Differing shades of tan, brown or black and sometimes patches of red, blue, or white. • Diameter: The mole is wider than a quarter inch in size. • Evolving lesion: This is a lesion that changes in size, shape, shades of color or symptoms, or has surface bleeding. Have your skin examined by a doctor every three years for people between 20 and 40 years of age and every year for anyone over the age of 40.

Insect bites and stings Wear clothing that covers the skin, and when needed, apply insect repellent containing DEET to clothing, shoes and exposed skin. In cases of bites or stings, remove the stinger (if applicable) and use ice to reduce pain, itching, and swelling.

Poison oak Learn what poison oak looks like, and if you come into contact with the leaves, flush the exposed areas with cold water for 20 minutes. Wash everything exposed, such as clothing. If a rash develops, using a topical steroid cream over 10 to 14 days can reduce itching. PUBLISHED YEARLY BY SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE

ALLERGY

Breathe easy — by staying in control Allergies and asthma are both easier to manage with some prevention. The key is identifying your triggers and limiting your exposure to them when possible. More than 50 million people in the United States suffer from allergies, asthma, or both, and the effects can range from simply annoying to life threatening. Here in the Central Valley, more people suffer from allergies and asthma than in any other region of California. The causes of asthma and allergies are unclear, but experts suspect a combination of inherited and environmental factors. Both conditions often begin in childhood — asthma being the most common ongoing condition found in children — but they can develop at any age. Some children grow out of asthma or allergies by the time they are teens.

How are allergies and asthma related? Allergies and asthma are both conditions of the immune system, wherein the immune system has an exaggerated response to a normally harmless substance. Asthma and allergies are often triggered by the same substances, although asthma SPECIAL SECTION 48 ADVERTISING SAN JOAQUIN HEALTH & MEDICAL GUIDE 2012

also can be triggered by other causes. Allergic asthma is the most common type of asthma, however.

Identifying allergens An allergen is anything that causes an allergic reaction. Allergens may include pollen, animal dander, foods and food preservatives, cockroaches, chemicals, pollution, dust and dust mites, pollen, mold, and mildew. To identify the source of your allergy, pay attention to when your reactions arise. Keeping a diary to track your symptoms is a great way to do this. There are also tests available to confirm which substances are allergens for you.

has prescribed an epinephrine syringe, make sure to carry it with you at all times. If you know you have a drug allergy, wear a medical ID bracelet.

What is asthma? Asthma is a chronic disease that affects the tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. During an attack, the muscles surrounding the airways spasm, mucus builds up within the airway, and breathing becomes labored. Common asthma triggers include all of the allergens listed above, as well as ear and sinus infections, the common cold, analgesics (especially aspirin), cold air, and physical or emotional stress.

Life-threatening allergies

Preventing and managing asthma attacks

For some people, allergies can be life-threatening. Insect stings, certain foods, or certain medications can bring on anaphylaxis, a severe reaction that causes difficulty in breathing and a drop in blood pressure. Anaphylaxis demands immediate medical attention, so if your doctor

If you have asthma, stay away from allergens and take medications as directed by your doctor. Regular, moderate exercise can help you build up the strength of your lungs. If you have asthma symptoms while exercising, talk with your doctor about ways to manage flare-ups.

Keep your home free of potential irritants, and don’t be shy about asking people not to smoke around you. If you catch a cold or the flu, talk to your doctor and make a list of which medicines to avoid. Prepare an asthma action plan with your doctor so you’ll know when to use your medications and when to seek emergency treatment.

Keep your medications on hand and make sure your family, friends, and coworkers know what to do if you have an attack. If your symptoms occur more often, are worse than normal, happen a lot at night, or don’t respond to your medications as well as they used to, see your doctor.

CARDIOLOGY

Pump up your awareness of hypertension Stay on top of your health by being heart smart. High blood pressure doesn’t show symptoms, so having it measured is the only way to know if it’s a concern. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is called the “silent killer” because it often has no warning signs or obvious symptoms. One in four adults in the United States has high blood pressure. Not surprisingly, almost one third of people with hypertension don’t even know they have it.

What is blood pressure? Blood pressure is the force of blood against your artery walls. During each heartbeat, blood pressure varies between a maximum (systolic) and a minimum (diastolic) pressure. Blood pressure is usually measured at a person’s upper arm and is expressed as systolic pressure over diastolic pressure (in mmHg), for example, 120/80. For adults, a blood pressure reading of 140/90 or higher is considered high.

Are you at risk? As you get older, you’re more likely to develop high blood pressure and it is most common in adults over 35. It is SPECIAL SECTION 50 ADVERTISING SAN JOAQUIN HEALTH & MEDICAL GUIDE 2012

also prevalent in African Americans, and people who are elderly, obese, or consume a lot of alcohol. Women who are pregnant, postmenopausal, or taking birth control pills are also at increased risk. Hypertension sometimes runs in families. Regular visits to your doctor will establish your health history and make it easier to determine if you will develop a problem in the future. Remember, the first step in preventing high blood pressure is knowing your numbers, so have your blood pressure checked regularly. If left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure.

You can do something about it! There is no cure for high blood pressure, but it can be controlled. Here are some lifestyle changes that can help you prevent high blood pressure: • Lose extra weight;

• Eat less salt; • Be physically active (aim for at least 30 minutes of activity most days of the week); • Limit alcohol to two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women and lighter –weight men; • Get 3,500 mg of potassium in your diet every day. Fresh, unprocessed whole foods have the most potassium. They include meat, fish, nonfat and low-fat dairy products, and many fruits and vegetables; • If you smoke, take steps to quit.

Do you know the signs of a stroke? A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts. Without blood and the oxygen it carries, part of the brain starts to die. Brain damage can begin within minutes, so it is important to know the symptoms of stroke and act quickly to help limit damage to the brain.

Healthy Hospitals 2012 COMPILED BY NISSA HALLQUIST

As gleaming, modern points of pride for their local communities, San Joaquin area hospitals have earned reputations far beyond the borders of the county. They are nationally renowned (and awarded) for their high standards of care, innovative procedures and state-of-the-art facilities. So whether you need heart surgery or just have the sniffles, broke your leg or are getting ready to deliver your baby, there is a San Joaquin area hospital ready and definitely able to take the best possible care of you and your family.

DAMERON HOSPITAL

525 West Acacia Street, Stockton (209) 944-5550, dameronhospital.org

Dameron Hospital is a fullservice, 202 bed not-forprofit community-owned hospital. Founded by Dr. John Dameron in 1912, 2012 celebrates Dameron Hospital’s 100 years of independent service to the Stockton community. Under the leadership of current Chief Executive Christopher Arismendi, M.D., Dameron Hospital is still located where Dr. Dameron first began construction: on the corner of Acacia and Lincoln Streets in central Stockton. The hospital campus now includes several surrounding blocks and is the county’s third largest private employer. Dameron Hospital was recently ranked in the top 10 percent of hospitals for joint replacement surgery by HealthGrades, a national hospital ranking service. It is also the county’s leading orthopedic hospital, as well as Stockton’s leading birthing hospital. The San Joaquin County Emergency Medical Services Agency has named Dameron a designated STEMI (ST segment Elevated Myocardial Infarction) receiving center in San Joaquin County. Because of Dameron’s LifeLine technology and cardiac-prepared ER staff, emergency response teams now automatically take patients suffering a STEMI to Dameron. Dameron Hospital has an active Cardiac Catheterization Lab and is a certified cardiac care hospital and cardiothoracic surgery center. Over the past ten years, Dameron has upgraded its equipment and facilities from the inside out. Just some of those upgrades include:

• Remodeled patient rooms (including new beds and furniture),

CCU and ICU departments, lobby, pharmacy, cafeteria and food preparation areas • New critical-care patient monitors in Emergency, Surgery and ICU/CCU departments • New Patient Telemetry Monitoring System on medical/surgical floors

DOCTORS HOSPITAL

1205 East North St., Manteca (209) 823-3111, doctorsmanteca.com

Located in Manteca, Doctors Hospital first opened its doors with twenty-eight beds, forty-one employees and nine physicians. Since then, like the community in which it resides, Doctors Hospital of Manteca has never stopped growing. Today, as one of the largest businesses in the community, Doctors Hospital of Manteca has more than 400 employees and a medical staff of 157 physicians. Recent building additions and upgrades have brought the bed count up past seventy. And, after making another investment in state-of-the-art imaging facilities, Doctors Hospital’s new Outpatient Diagnostic Imaging Center is expected to open this month, May 2012. When it comes to personal care, Doctors Hospital still considers itself a small town hospital at heart, and now with the tools to take that care to an even higher level. In addition to the diagnostic superiority offered by the new imaging center and equipment, Doctors Hospital offers many other advanced services and accommodations to its patients, including luxurious private patient rooms, fast emergency care, pharmacy, ICU/ CCU and obstetrical services and weight loss surgeries. KAISER PERMANENTE, MODESTO MEDICAL CENTER

For the second year in a row, Doctors Hospital has been named a Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence in the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program. This is due to the exceptional level of care and technological achievements of its Women’s Imaging Center. Imaging techniques there include Digital Mammography, Breast MRI, Breast Ultrasound/Breast Ultrasound Biopsy, Stereotactic Core Biopsy and MRI Guided Breast Biopsy. Doctors Hospital is a member of Tenet California, and has been recognized as one of the best hospitals in that organization. In 2011, Doctors Hospital was one of eight hospitals named to Tenet’s Circle of Excellence, after having demonstrated the highest levels of quality service and care.

KAISER PERMANENTE, MANTECA MEDICAL CENTER 1777 W. Yosemite Ave. Manteca (209) 825-3700 kp.org/centralvalley

The Kaiser Permanente Manteca Medical Center is a non-profit, privately owned acute care hospital. It was established when the hospital that formerly occupied the site—CHW/St. Dominic’s Hospital—was purchased by Kaiser Permanente in 2005. It currently provides 99 licensed beds and has been expanded to approximately 81,390 square feet. The Kaiser Permanente Manteca Medical Center specializes in general surgery and emergency services. It also has a well-regarded Skilled Nursing facility that provides round the clock care of the elderly as well as younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. In 2011, the Manteca Medical Center was recently ranked by Health Grades in appendectomy surgery and maternity care, and was given a Best Quality ranking for gynecologic surgery. Dedicated to providing quality service to both their members and others in the Manteca community, Kaiser offers a variety of classes and other programs to keep people well-informed and educated about their health. Just some of these classes include how to manage diabetes, weight control, family planning, living with COPD and smoking cessation.

4601 Dale Road, Modesto (209) 735-5000 kp.org/centralvalley

The Kaiser Permanente Modesto Medical Center opened October 8, 2008. As of this March, the facility boasts 140 licensed beds and an impressive 300,250 square feet. The hospital is particularly renowned for its emergency, labor and delivery, and surgery services. Labor and Delivery services at the Modesto Medical Center are the first to be offered at a Kaiser Permanente facility in the Central Valley. Each private Labor and Delivery suite was designed and furnished to promote feelings of calm and relaxation. Whenever possible, mother and baby remain in the same room post-delivery, so their recovery is hastened and uninterrupted. The staff of physicians, nurses and certified nurse midwives is committed to making the childbirth experience a joyous one. A level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is there for newborns that need a little more attention. Kaiser Permanente members can also receive advanced surgical care at the Modesto Medical Center’s state-of-the-art surgery department. Each operating suite features the latest equipment and technology, maximizing patient care while minimizing invasive procedures. Digital equipment allows surgeons to broadcast the procedure over a secure network to Kaiser Permanente physicians anywhere in the country, essentially creating a nationwide team of experts ready to offer their expertise whenever needed. Paired up with the Manteca Medical Center, the Modesto Medical Center has also achieved Gold Seal Accreditation status from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association Bronze Achievement Award for the organization’s stroke program. As mentioned in regards to the Manteca Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente received the HIMSS Stage 7 Award for its advancements in information technology. The same initiatives also recently earned Kaiser a first place ranking in Computerworld magazine’s 2011 list of Green IT organizations, the only health care organization to be included.

LODI MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Together with its counterpart in Modesto, the Kaiser Permanente Manteca Medical Center was given The Joint Commission Gold Seal Accreditation in 2010 (valid for three years), and the American Heart Association (AMA) Bronze Achievement Award for their stroke program.

975 S. Fairmont Ave., Lodi (209) 334-3411 lodihealth.org

Lodi Memorial Hospital was founded in 1945 as the flagship of the Lodi Memorial Hospital Association. Its doors opened in March of 1952, and it has served the Lodi community well ever since.

It is also the recipient of the HIMSS (Health Information Management Systems Society) Stage 7 Award for their advanced directives in the area of information technology. This is due to Kaiser’s formation of an integrated delivery system for smooth communication between departments, paperless files and online access to medical records (see “Taking Charge of Your Health Care” for more information on Kaiser’s tech initiatives).

It currently has 214 beds and ten clinics split between two hospital campuses. Together, both campuses offer a full range of inpatient services, including obstetrics, medical/surgical, ICU, telemetry and acute-physical rehabilitation. Meanwhile, Lodi Memorial and its various clinics—primary care, obstetrics, pediatric, occupational medicine, pulmonology, urgent care and multi-specialty—provide a wide range of outpatient services, such as physical, speech and occupational therapy, laboratory and diagnostic imaging. Lodi Memorial also has fully staffed centers for the day care of both children and adults. Affiliated businesses include endoscopy and outpatient surgery centers, a home health agency and a durable medical equipment business. In addition to the sheer breadth of services offered, Lodi Memorial is also dedicated to keeping such services and associated departments as up-todate as possible. Just some of their recent advancements include: • Expanding their hospitalist program • Launching a new outpatient services center for diagnostic-imaging and laboratory services • Launching a new hospital-based observation unit for patients presenting to the emergency room as needing stabilization rather than inpatient admission • Starting a joint venture with Regent Surgical Health, Lodi Outpatient Surgery Center and the Lodi Endoscopy Center • Building a $14 million kitchen • Beginning room service menus for hospitalized patients • Expanding their multi-specialty clinic services • Installing a new radiographic/fluoroscopic unit to improve imaging and reduce radiation • Addressing their patient and employees spiritual needs by starting a Friday afternoon prayer service for patients, staff, volunteers and visitors • Opening a telemetry unit for heart patients Because of such improvements, Lodi Memorial has been awarded Meaningful Use funding and been re-accredited by The Joint Commission.

Established in 1857 by San Joaquin County, San Joaquin General Hospital (SJGH) relocated to its current location in French Camp in 1895. Since then, SJGH has continually expanded with projects like the Towers Building (built in 1932), construction of a new inpatient tower (completed in 1996) and a new laboratory building (completed in 2006). Under the current leadership of CEO David Culberson, SJGH continues to stay up-to-date with the latest technology, techniques and facilities. For example, its digital radiographic services include CT Scans, nuclear medicine, a cardiac catheterization lab, ultrasound and general radiography and, as of 2011, a digital stereotactic mammography suite.

The hospital currently provides 196 licensed beds, including 16 in Intensive Care, 26 in the Perinatal unit and 25 in the Intensive Care Newborn Nursery. SJGH is particularly proud of its labor and delivery section, with comprehensive obstetrical service (including an in-house obstetrician available 24/7), certified nurse midwives, a dedicated obstetrical anesthesia service and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with a 24/7 transport team. The hospital’s presence extends far into the community with a variety of clinics in French Camp and Stockton. The numerous specialties of these clinics range from primary care to pediatrics and Ob/Gyn, as well as extensive outpatient services like diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, physical, occupational and speech therapies and outpatient dialysis. SJGH also excels as a teaching hospital, with programs in General Surgery, Internal Medicine and Family Medicine. The General Surgery resident physician training program at SJGH was recognized as one of only two programs in the U. S. that have had 100% of graduates pass the American College of Surgery Board Certification exam each year over the past ten years. Development has recently begun for a Patient Centered Medical Home, which will offer more coordinated and focused access and improved services to patients with diabetes. This Medical Home model will be administered by attending and resident physicians, psychiatrists, licensed social workers, registered dieticians, nurses and other staff, all of whom have received updated training about the program’s components and benefits.

evidence-based clinical processes shown to improve care for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and children’s asthma). It is only one of six Sutter Health hospitals (out of a total of 405) to be so recognized. Sutter Tracy currently provides 82 beds in its fully accredited, not-for-profit, full-service medical center, and is able to boast state-of-the-art technology and highly skilled physicians representing nearly every medical specialty. In 2004, a major expansion project remodeled and enlarged what are now Sutter Tracy’s pride and joy: their Emergency

Department and Family Birthing Center. The same expansion also updated the Sutter Tracy Diagnostic Imaging Center and Outpatient Surgery Center. In ongoing support of the community that founded it, Sutter Tracy extends its care beyond its doors, beyond medicine. Over the past year alone, the hospital has helped raise and/or donate tens of thousands of dollars to aid area charities and food banks.

A STEMI, or ST-elevated myocardial infarction, is the most deadly type of heart attack, for which every minute of a hospital’s response to clear a heart blockage could be the difference between life or death for the patient. Since 2009, St. Joseph’s STEMI team has been using advanced technology to identify STEMIs and improve response times for heart attack patients. Drs George Charos and Michael Herrera led the life-saving STEMI initiative for St. Joseph’s emergency department and cardiac catheterization lab staff. To make identification of STEMIs more efficient and, in turn, save lives, St. Joseph’s equipped community ambulances with the technology to read and send a heart attack victim’s EKG signal (used to diagnose STEMIs) from the field electronically to ER doctors. With this technology, physicians at St. Joseph’s can diagnose a heart attack and assemble its STEMI response team before the patient reaches the hospital doors. Because of their finely tuned response process, the team at St. Joseph’s excels in terms of efficiency and effectiveness in responding to STEMIs (heart attacks). While the national standard to open a blocked artery is 90-minutes, St. Joseph’s STEMI team targets 65 minutes or less, and has a best ever time of 28 minutes!

permanent cosmetics represent an investment in your appearance. people with unsteady hands, less than perfect vision, or a demanding lifestyle need not struggle with an extra time and effort required to apply topical makeup. reapplication throughout the day will no longer be required to maintain the desired look and overall appearance. when your face is radiantly fresh with permanent cosmetics, mirrors become an unnecessary accessory.
