ReceptionTrends TGIF. Saturday ceremonies may seem like the norm, but just what can you gain from Friday night nuptials? The answer is a whole lot of cash. Not only do venues tend to offer discounted dance floors and cost-effective food, your vendors may see the value in your weekday affair as well. Friday night is still prime for a party, and because they book less often than Saturdays, you’ll save a pretty penny on just about everything. DIY paper products. Even if crafting isn’t your forte, you can still do-it-yourself to save a few dollars. Menus, place cards and table numbers can all be completed with a hot glue gun, cardstock, and a little bit of glitter. Balance your bar tab. Hosting a beer and wine bar will save you serious dough, but if it’s a deal breaker for your wild reception, you can still make cuts. Scale back on offerings by mixing house labels with high-end choices, cut off the open bar an hour early or serve a beer and wine only cocktail hour with a full bar to follow. Skip the favors. Is a candy bar with your name on it a nuptials necessity? Is a pouch of Jordan almonds worth the time they take to stuff? Probably not. Don’t diss the DJ. A live band may sound like music to your ears, but a DJ that can play upbeat tunes at the reception and broadcast instrumental compositions during the ceremony, will streamline your entertainment—and your costs.
Brides on a Budget: 10 COST-SAVING TIPS FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Creating a wedding budget is no small feat, and sticking to it is nearly impossible. As soon as you hear a harp play the ceremony at your cousin’s affair, or catch a glimpse of the darling confectionary display at your coworker’s reception, you won’t be able to stop yourself from ordering customized chalkboard signs and lace votive holders on Etsy. To help stave off debt as you plan your “I dos,” look to these 10 tips for cutting costs without compromising your vision. 24
SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS
Employ simple centerpieces. Fresh blooms don’t come cheap. Either scale back on the tables that need floral adornments, or get creative instead. Branches, tea lights and vases are just as appealing, and last much longer! Ditch the extras. Frivolous add-ons like chair covers, chargers and a monogrammed aisle runner add up quick. When your purse strings need to be tightened, drop these items first. Use your connections. Whether your sister’s best friend is an up-and-coming makeup artist or your new brother-in-law is in a band, call in favors wherever you can. You’re likely to get services at half-price, trade or even as a wedding gift. Go all-inclusive. Instead of picking a party hall, scouting a ceremony spot, and hiring a caterer, find all three at once. An inclusive location offers discounts on combined services, and saves you time that can be better spent at your second job, slaving to pay for those passed hors d’oeuvres. Hit up a bridal fair. In addition to being a onestop shop of wedding vendors, brides at these conventions often win prizes or at least collect coupons for later use.

Make a
Splash with a
signature
Cocktail BY NORA HESTON TARTE
A vacation in Hawaii brings visions of pina coladas the same way a ski lodge makes you crave hot chocolate, so what kind of drink would be best enjoyed at your wedding? While a vintage vino may seem the perfect fit for “I dos” amongst the vines, beachside nuptials may send you clamoring for a tropical beverage complete with a fresh fruit skewer. Why not take it a step further and create something truly unique for your oncein-a-lifetime event? Enter the signature cocktail. This wedding trend is gaining serious traction amongst modern brides, and while drinks tend to match the theme of the day, they are still perfectly one-of-a-kind. In order to perfect this cocktail craze, it’s important your signature drink make sense. The same way you wouldn’t outfit tables with seashells at your New Year’s Eve wedding bash, you wouldn’t make a stiff martini the toasting choice for your Hawaiian luau. Instead, pair spiked hot chocolates with a winter mountain escape or a tequila sunrise with a twist on a summer afternoon. Your signature cocktail should flawlessly complement your evening. Some brides get kitschy with the idea 28
SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS
by adding a little classic wedding flair to the feat. Your cocktail can do double duty; serving a purpose other than helping your guests enjoy their night. For example, it is surely on trend to let your cocktail (or mocktail if you prefer) act as “something blue.” Mix up concoctions with blue Curacao to deliver a dash of color that’s suitable for every affair. Be weary of what other mix-ins you use though because the other ingredients can muddy the color. However, they can also work together. Try a cranberry juice-based drink to create a deep sapphire blue, or mix cloudy liquids to achieve a cloud-like effect. If blue clashes with your green and pink color scheme, go for something that won’t stand out like bad décor. Signature cocktails can be displayed at the bar, or passed pre-dinner, so they certainly shouldn’t draw negative attention—although you don’t want them to go unnoticed either. Luckily bartenders have become pros at creating cocktails that look as good as they taste, which means liquors, spices, juices and garnishes can be expertly combined to offer a stunning drink that harmonizes with your visuals.
The serving glass is part of the presentation. Upscale affairs where bubbly is best can serve sparkling mixers in appropriate glasses. Your city-set nuptials will blend perfectly with a martini, while hurricane glasses scream tropical oasis. Regardless of what you choose, the result should be a beautifully presented, distinctive mixture that will have mixologists raving and guests talking. Some couples choose a classic cocktail instead of creating their own. If you and your spouse-to-be have a favorite sipper, share it with family and friends. Perhaps your preferred blend tells a story. Did you meet over margaritas? The signature cocktail is another opportunity to infuse personality into your affair. Don’t pass it up. Naming your signature drink can be more fun than making it. Add an amusing turn on your new last name, or pull inspiration from your wedding theme. The possibilities are endless.
Let these recipes serve as inspiration: SPIKED HOT CHOCOLATE (photo on left):
Start with your preferred recipe for quality hot chocolate 1 oz tequila • 1 oz peppermint schnapps
BLUE COSMOPOLITAN:
4 parts citron • 3 parts cranberry juice (go white for a light colored cocktail, or red for the sapphire effect) • 1 part blue Curacao Splash of lime juice GARNISH APPROPRIATELY:
suggestions include lime, orange peel or cherry. Serve in a martini glass
WHITE SANGRIA:
For every bottle of white wine (Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio are suggested) use the following. • ¼ cup of triple sec • ½ cup brandy • ¾ cup simple syrup • Assorted fruit of choice—create a statement by utilizing wedding colors GARNISH APPROPRIATELY: suggestions
include fresh fruit, mint leaves or lime slices. Serve in wine glasses.

GARNISH APPROPRIATELY: suggestions include mini marshmallows, mint leaves, whipped cream or cinnamon. Serve in festive mugs.

mutual friend introduced Jennifer and Nicholas in 2010. They both worked at University of the Pacific—her in the student leadership office, him in public safety—but had never met. They bonded over a mutual love of Disney and were engaged in front of the Disneyworld castle in May 2014. In order to keep the proposal a surprise, Nicholas told Jennifer that two of their best friends were getting engaged and wanted them to be there. However, shortly before their planned trip to Florida, the two friends got engaged. Nicholas threw Jennifer off the scent and they decided to travel to Florida anyway since the vacation was already booked. There they celebrated their friends’ engagement and Jennifer got another surprise. During a day at the theme park, Nicholas pretended to take a photo with Jennifer in front of Cinderella’s castle before dropping to one knee and asking her to be his wife. “The two guys had plotted together,” Jennifer laughed, adding the scheme had also been a ploy to throw off her friend who accepted a proposal shortly before. “It worked well.” Jennifer plans events for a living and said she wanted to be engaged 50

for a year so she could enjoy the moment and flush out all of the details of the big day. Their dating anniversary—Oct. 10— happened to fall on a Saturday, so they picked that date for their wedding. Instead of going all out Disney for their affair, the couple incorporated their shared interest through small accents. First, they took engagement photos in Disneyland. On the big day, Jennifer gave Nicholas a pair of Mickey Mouse cufflinks and a tie clip before the ceremony to wear. They also used many subtle “Up” references—including a “My Adventure Book” guestbook and grape soda pins for the groomsmen—as well as table numbers outfitted with Mickey and Minnie Mouse and a cake topper made to look like the couple wearing ears. “I think our wedding was very unique,” Jennifer says. “It was entirely us.”

After more than a year of long-distance planning, the big day finally arrived. The couple chose to get married in Modesto where Jess’ parents live. To represent the agricultural feel of the town, Jess and Matt incorporated rustic details into their decorations. The ceremony, however, was a highlight. “We got great feedback on the ceremony,” Jess says, adding it included a lot of singing as well as traditional Jewish elements such as a chuppah. “I think the ceremony was my favorite part,” she laments. Today, Jess and Matt are enjoying married life in D.C. Jess is finishing her fellowship to become a neonatologist and Matt is working as an attorney at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP.

or Jess, her engagement to Matt came as a huge surprise. After meeting on the online dating platform “JDate,” they hit it off. Matt was actually Jess’ first date from the site, which led her to believe there must be a lot of awesome suitors on the site, so she went on a few more. It didn’t take her long to figure out that Matt was different. After their second date, Jess was set to go to Mexico to visit her parents for two weeks. Matt was worried that Jess would go to Mexico and then forget about him. He made sure to offer Jess a ride from Dulles upon her return (even though he didn’t have a car) just to make sure that Jess would have to see him again. It worked. Their proposal came more than two years later. Matt tricked Jess into spending a private date night at the Four Seasons in Washington D.C. where they live. After dinner, he whisked her up to a room—one she had no idea he had booked—and proposed amongst rose petals, chocolate covered strawberries and champagne. After the proposal, Matt suggested they head back down stairs for a celebratory drink, where 50 of their closest friends and family members jumped out and yelled, “Surprise!” “We got to share it with our friends,” Jess gushes.

rin and Joshua almost didn’t meet at all. After scheduling their first date at De Vega Brothers, Erin waited at their March Lane location while Joshua was at the newer spot in Stone Creek Village. After about 20 minutes, Josh called Erin who immediately realized her mistake. Though Erin offered to drive to Stone Creek, Josh insisted on meeting Erin at her location instead. “We dated for a short time and then lost contact,” Erin shares. Eight months later, however, Erin and her parents ended up at the store where Josh was the regional sales manager. She tried to avoid running into him, afraid it might be awkward, but Josh saw her and asked, “if she would please go out with him again,” Erin recalls. “Two weeks later we went on our second first date at Shangri La Bistro in Lodi and have been together ever since!” The proposal came on a trip to Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day. “Josh had planned to propose at the Cliffs of Moher,” Erin says. But dense fog on the winding road led Josh to abandon that plan, believing it was no longer the perfect setting for such a question. As the week went on, Josh (unsuccessfully) attempted to get Erin alone multiple times. On the final night, “we went down to the water to take pictures,” shares Erin. Josh got down on his knee and asked Erin to marry him. At the wedding, Erin and Josh played tribute to the San Joaquin Valley, to give outof-state guests a taste of the area. The local offerings included wine by Michael David Winery, an end-of-the-night In-N-Out food truck that provided evening snacks and the

lyssa and Brandon met—and met again—by chance. The first time was a few years ago. Time passed and they ran into each other once again. At that time, they couldn’t deny there was something special between them. During a trip to Southern California, Brandon popped the question. “We had a perfect day,” Alyssa says. The couple started their trip in Newport Beach, ate lunch together and then headed to Disneyland to end their evening. However, on their way back to the hotel, Alyssa says Branden started acting

different. As the couple walked around the rose gardens and white gazebo on the grounds, they had “nervous conversations,” Alyssa recalls. Then, Branden got up the courage to ask the big question. “He got down on one knee and…ask[ed] me to marry him,” Alyssa gushes. As Branden fiddled with the ring box and tried to get it open, there was a long pause. Then, Alyssa nodded yes. “He started to put the ring on the wrong hand,” Alyssa says, “We laughed. I cried. But eventually he put the ring on the correct finger!” Alyssa describes their big day as “breathtaking.” “Everything was absolutely

The décor lended to the romantic feel of their nuptials and pink up lighting made the room glow. “It looked so beautiful,” she says. After exchanging vows, Branden and Alyssa shared a high-five—a moment she says perfectly sums up their bond as a fun and spontaneous couple entering their new lives as husband and wife. Married life is going well for the lovebirds. “My favorite part is getting to come home every day to my best friend,” Alyssa says. Regardless of what challenges they may face throughout the day, Branden and Alyssa know they have each other to lean on at the end of the day. “It’s an amazing support system and overall wonderful feeling that would be hard to put into words,” she says.

alia & T.J. are high school sweethearts. The two met at Lincoln Center Live in August 2008, and began dating shortly after. They were together almost seven years when they got married. “We had met several times through similar friends at parties but didn’t remember who each other was until we out the pieces of the past together,” Malia shares. According to T.J., Malia had expressed fear that he wouldn’t give her the special proposal she dreamed of. Timothy put those fears to rest with an over-the-top proposal that lasted from breakfast to dinner. It started with a note left with her breakfast,
58

which he had made before leaving for the gym, and led to several excursions with friends to get ready for the big night, each accompanied by another note from T.J. “The last note before they left said to meet me at the place where we first met,” he recalls. There, he and his friends stood with candles, while his brother held their then 6-month-old daughter. “She walked up to me and I gave her a note that told her to turn around and look at the place where she first stole my ice cream,” on the night they met. When she turned back around, T.J. was holding their little girl, outfitted in a shirt that said “mommy will you marry my daddy?”
“It was literally the cutest thing ever and so perfect,” Malia shares. “T.J. then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.” After Malia accepted the proposal, the group went out to Papavalo’s to celebrate. On their wedding day, T.J. says he wasn’t nervous at all— they had been together for such a long time already, he knew he would spend his life with Malia. “I just remember thinking that this is actually happening and that this is the day I marry the woman I love,” he gushes. As Malia walked down the aisle toward Timothy, “Marry Me” by Jason Derulo was sung live. The reception hall was outfitted with vases with floating candles and flowers everywhere. A huge candy bar was placed off to the side, and the cake and cake topper infused the couple’s personality into the day. “Overall an amazing day I would say,” gushed T.J.

ristin and Justin met in high school. Despite a three-year age gap, the couple were constantly running into each other. “We always had the same friends but we never really got the chance to get to know each other,” Kristin explains. That all changed after graduation, when the two were finally able to connect and realize their potential. The proposal came on July 4, 2014. “It’s hard to surprise me,” Kristin admits, “and he did.” While on vacation in Orange County at Kristin’s grandfather’s house, the two enjoyed watching the fireworks together. After, they decided to take a walk. It was then that Justin popped the question.

CALVIN KLEIN, MEN’S WEARHOUSE Three weeks after the Independence Day proposal, Kristin received another surprise; she found out she was six weeks pregnant with the couple’s first son. The news added some extra work during the engagement period, while they busily planned their wedding, prepared for a new baby and later cared for a newborn. At the time of the wedding, Jayce was 7 months old. “It went pretty smoothly,” Kristin said of her wedding to Justin. The bride admits she asked for rain on her wedding day, thinking of it as a sign from her late father. With the California drought at its worse, a few drops seemed like wishful thinking, but in Murphys that day, it poured. “I got exactly what I wanted,” she says, adding it was, however, a little more than she was expecting. Jayce was a part of the couple’s big day, enduring three outfit changes and a walk down the aisle with Justin’s 18-year-old niece Denicka. The two took the place of traditional flower girls. With so many highlights of the day, it’s hard to pick a favorite. However, Kristin says, “The first dance was amazing.” To incorporate both the groom’s and bride’s late father’s love of the outdoors, the couple paid tribute with small details. The colors were hunter green and gold and the cake table was outfitted with a carved wooden heart, adorned with the couple’s names and deer. Vases were filled with shotgun shells and topped with flowers, the men wore shells as boutonnières and the setting tied it all together—boasting picturesque waterfalls and caves.

amm and Scott started their storybook romance nearly three years ago after connecting on the dating website Match.com. In the beginning of their relationship they connected over a shared disinterest in sports and spent their first date at Tokyo Steakhouse, a hibachi-style restaurant in Sacramento. It is now “their place.” “We’ve been together ever since,” Samm says. The engagement came on Christmas Eve. As Samm was wrapping gifts for their two children—Braxton, 6, and Corbin, 2—Scott kept wandering back into the room with a grin on his face. Samm even admits she got a little irritated with him because he was supposed to be in the other room sleeping with the boys. Finally he surprised Samm by getting down on

Their wedding day came over a year later and was truly unique. From a dress that lit up bright pink on the dance floor, illuminated by tiny lights placed on a sliplike garment under her dress created by her mother-inlaw, to the dog who acted as both co-flower girl and aisle escort along with Samm’s father, “the whole wedding was amazing,” Samm gushes. With dog in tow, Samm
certainly made an entrance, but the couple’s two boys came in style, as well, riding a John Deere tractor down the aisle. “They were in love,” Samm laughs. The true highlight, however, was getting family and friends together. “I had family come in from Montana,” Samm shares. Scott’s family came up from Los Angeles. The couple, who live in Natomas, says married life isn’t much different than “non-married life,” although they are slowly adjusting to new pronouns—calling each other husband and wife instead of fiancé or girlfriend.

t took a little probing from her best friend to get Sarah to attend a football Sunday BBQ five years ago, but now she’s glad she took the bait. “After about five phone calls to me,” Sarah starts, adding she kept hanging up on her friend, hesitant to find herself in an awkward blind date situation, “Nicole finally convinced me to stop by.” It was that day that she met Grant, the party’s host. “Grant and I have been inseparable ever since,” she says. Sarah says her beau kept chickening out on the proposal (which came on her 29th birthday). He planned a romantic dinner out in Walnut Creek and meant to drop the ring in a glass of champagne or hide it in a piece of cake. He didn’t pull the trigger, however, until they had made it back home. “It was

a sweet and romantic moment,” she remembers. “We didn’t announce it until the next morning so we could enjoy the rest of the evening together.” Scorching heat threatened to creep in on their September nuptials, with highs of 102 and 108 throughout the week, but the California fires that week created a haze that shielded their big day from high temperatures. “The morning of the wedding day was a cool 70 degrees outside,” Sarah says. “My favorite part was seeing the tears of joy run down my soon-to-be husband’s face as I walked down the aisle,” Sarah recalls. She admits Grant “is not an emotional man by any means,” but their wedding day brought it out of him. “Our ceremony was short and sweet, with a few laughs under the gorgeous 500+ year old Oak tree,” she says. “We really wanted our day

Lucky for the two lovebirds, it didn’t take long to find each other. However, they would later find out that their lives had paralleled each other’s for many years. CHELSEA RAMSEY & SARAH LEONARD shares. “I can honestly say our first date was the best first date I’ve ever been on—we talked the whole night and he made me laugh so easily.” The proposal came in the summer of 2014, during a weekend getaway to Kirkwood Meadows at Andy’s parent’s cabin—a favorite destination for the couple. During a hike that overlooks the Tahoe Basin with Andy’s dog Fritz, Nicole could tell something was amiss. “I could tell something was off, because Andy couldn’t keep up with me during the hike,” she says. Once at the top, Andy asked Nicole to take another picture of him and Fritz—which he had been asking her to do the whole way up—with Lake Tahoe in the background. “While I was trying to get the perfect view, I didn’t realize that while Andy was kneeled down with Fritz, he had pulled the ring out of his backpack and was in perfect position on one knee.”
A year later, Nicole and Andy celebrated their love with family and friends at the Stockton Golf & Country Club. “We had 260 people in attendance, and we wouldn’t have wanted it any other way,” Nicole says. The couple integrated Nicole’s Swiss background into the festivities, as well. “We incorporated traditional Swiss dances and our dessert bar was filled with homemade Swiss cookies that our guests graciously made for us,” she gushed. Despite the special touches, Nicole says her and Andy’s favorite moments were watching all of their guests—young and old—on the dance floor. So far married life is treating Nicole and Andy well. Renovations are taking up much of their time while they anxiously await their extended honeymoon this summer.

In usual spirit, Mike jumped up on the bar and started dancing. “He just has a great butt!” Violet laughs reminiscing their first encounter. The two hit it off and planned their first date, a Midtown Sacramento Pub Crawl, just a week later. Lodi’s famed Wine and Chocolate weekend solidified the relationship. “When I met his mom, I just knew,” says Violet. “And I knew from the start,” replies Mike, as he describes his wife’s loving heart, beautiful curly hair, big brown eyes, and pouty lips. “He just has this gravity to him,” Violet continues. “He brings everyone in and 68

Violet, expecting nothing more than his kind gesture, began to enjoy her breakfast. “Don’t you want some juice?” “You should try the juice!” Mike eagerly suggested. And as she reached for the glass she discovered her custom ring, and of course, said yes.
Mike’s mom, Patricia Willson, was a huge player in their big day. “We had this dream for our wedding day and she made it a reality,” says Violet. “I didn’t worry about anything.” For the happy couple, their first look is a favorite memory. “We hadn’t seen each other the night before so the first look was really specialit was real then, we were getting married!” the couple explains. Together they describe their day as seamless and truly amazing. Other high notes were walking each other down the isle, the speeches, and Mike giving Violet’s daughter Gwen a ring during the ceremony. “Everything was just really special.”

The proposal came on Gina’s birthday, and Broc incorporated her family into the big ask, an effort she appreciates considering her deep connection with them. Broc used some creative deception to truly surprise his soon-to-be bride, telling her he couldn’t attend her family’s celebration for her. “I tried to be understanding but was disappointed,” Gina confesses. Her whole family was in on it and helped Broc cover up his big plan. Gina was completely convinced they would spend her birthday apart. Gina had no idea the birthday gift she was about to receive from Broc. Upon entering her celebration, she found a dozen roses accompanied by a card. “I began to read the most beautiful words saying that he could not imagine life without me,” she says. Then, Broc appeared, immediately dropped to one knee and proposed, in front of her entire family. Her father even recorded it.

PETAL PINK AND IVORY Gina’s son was part of the couple’s celebration, which included a sand ceremony where they exchanged promises to love and support each other as a family. Touching speeches were a highlight of the day, and many of Gina’s former students (she’s a high school teacher) were in attendance. Broc surprised Gina one more time by serenading her during the reception. “He has a beautiful voice and everyone was touched by his performance,” Gina recalls. From tears of joy, to laughter and love, the wedding day was everything the couple had hoped it would be, and more. Today, the couple is enjoying being a family. With their son Andrew and their two puppies, Lily and Sophie, they are taking on new adventures together— from a honeymoon in Paris to a buying their first home. Broc and Gina are looking forward to the future together.

There, Christian asked for Colleen’s phone number and began texting her and calling her to say “goodnight.” After a few months of exclusive dating, it was apparent to both that things were getting serious. “He will tell you he was a little bit wild,” Colleen says with a giggle as she describes Christian’s past. But he settled down immediately, exchanging nights out for movie nights at home. When asked how Colleen knew Christian

He’s the funniest person I’ve ever met.” The couple spent two years long distance as Colleen worked as a flight attendant living in San Jose while Christian stayed in Stockton, before moving to San Francisco. Two years following, Colleen moved in with Christian joining him in the city. Thanksgiving day is always a busy one for the couple, with visits from both families. However, Christian was dead set on taking a hike before beginning this

year’s festivities. They woke bright and early to head to Marine Highlands, a special spot for the couple. 100 yards into the hike Christian busted at the seams, telling Colleen how much he loved her as he dropped to one knee and asked her to be his wife. “I couldn’t even say yes because I was crying so much!” Colleen says as she reminisces her surprise proposal. Their Wine & Roses ceremony and reception was just beautiful. As Colleen explains, “The reception room smelled so great because of our amazing centerpiece flowers!” Her uncle married the couple, and touching speeches from both sides of the wedding party made the night extra special. “Right before we were introduced as Mr. and Mrs. Chelli- that was the fist time we were alone after the wedding. CIAO BELLA SALON Pajaro Dunes—a special twist in August 2014. “After eating at one of our favorite local restaurants over there, Lillian’s Italian Kitchen, we went for a walk along the beach at sunset,” Jessica remembers. “Near the end of our walk, Adam got down on one knee and proposed.” After much planning, the wedding day finally arrived nearly a year later. Jessica calls it “the best day of [their] lives,” and admits it “went by way to fast.” The couple played tribute to their favorite baseball team, The San Francisco Giants, by adding hints of orange to their otherwise blue and purple décor. Expanding on their love for baseball, both rings were brought down the aisle in Adam’s great grandfather’s baseball glove. Baseball wasn’t the only theme of the night. Jessica says the wedding had an overall rustic appeal complete
with burlap table runners, lanterns and lace on the homemade program fans. “One of our favorite details is our custom made, wooden carved Mr. and Mrs. Dusi cake topper,” she boasts. The night ended with a sparkler sendoff down Main Street before the new Mr. and Mrs. Dusi exited under the archway at Viaggio Estate and Winery, which reads, “Where your journey to forever begins.” “We were both so overjoyed and excited for this day to finally be here after five years of dating and friendship,” she shares. “We wouldn’t change anything about our special day.” Jessica and Adam made the decision not to live together before they said, “I do,” so perhaps the biggest adjustment has been moving in. However, Jessica also calls being with each other all the time “the best part.”

The two crossed paths in the summer of 2006 when Mallory introduced them, but it wasn’t until their second meeting that love began to blossom—this time at Mallory’s Halloween party. “We talked the whole night at the party and made plans to see a movie the next day. We hung out every day and it the rest was history,” Leah shares. “It was just meant to be!” Before the two got married, Leah had several items to check off of her to do list, including finishing her degree and getting a stable job. “We needed to do things our way and in our own time,” she says. But after Leah and Stephen both graduated college and began to settle into their careers, the time had come for the couple to take the next step. “One day while I was home on my lunch hour, Stephen came home and was acting strange,” Leah recalls. “He walked into our guest bedroom and then he walked

Leah says the day was “so much fun.” “I have never felt so beautiful in my whole life,” she gushes of her hair, makeup and dress. However, her favorite moment of was when the church doors opened she and Stephen laid eyes on each other for the first time on their wedding day. “The ceremony was emotional and so beautiful,” she says. “I’ve been to a ton of Greek Orthodox weddings, but getting to experience it myself was incredible.” During the reception, guests participated in traditional Greek dancing. “It really was a big fat Greek wedding!” says Leah. hrissy and Peter met at Marshall Middle School in 1999. Over the years, their friendship blossomed and at Edison High School, they shared classes together. However, the two both admittedly never saw each other as “their type.” She, the focused student, and he, the class jokester, just didn’t have much in common. In college, however, that all changed. Attending different schools in the Bay Area, they got closer and became best friends. Suddenly, Chrissy says they had tons in common, “he is the boy version of me,” she admits. After college, it all came together and in 2009, they became “official.” A Disneyland proposal came in 2013 during a trip to the happiest place on earth. “We started the day out early gallivanting around Disneyland,” Chrissy remembers. 78

“After a few rides we both ended up being a little woozy [and] we decided to take a break.” The couple got in line for photos in front of the castle and as they waited, they agreed on what poses they would do when their turn came around. Finally in front of the camera, as Chrissy readied for pose number two, she saw Peter already down on one knee. “I was in shock, speechless, forgot where we were, and who was looking,” Chrissy admits. “I instantly thought ‘Peter you are so stupid. This is so scary!’...but it was just the perfect execution of a surprise!” Once the shock wore off, Chrissy gave her answer. “As I nodded yes, a round of applause and well wishes came from all those around us witnessing our happiest moment.” On their wedding day, the couple
surprised guests with a performance—during their grand entrance they sang/rapped to Beyonce & Jay-Z’s “Bonnie & Clyde.” “We had our most favorite people in one room cheering us on as husband and wife, with the fog and lights, and love all around...it was an incredible feeling,” Chrissy says of the special day. Chrissy also got crafty with some of the wedding day details, imploring DIY designs. With the table décor, dessert buffet table, welcome table, red carpet photo booth, invitations, wedding favors and more, everything had an esoteric touch. As the newlyweds settle into married life, they can’t escape the feeling of being on cloud nine. “We don’t anticipate this feeling ending any time soon,” Chrissy says.

Later when Sean caught the bouquet at a friend’s wedding in the summer of 2008, and Eric caught the garter at another wedding around the same time, the couple saw it as destiny. “There was never really a proposal,” Eric says. “After having dated for a couple of years, Eric and I became Registered Domestic Partners,” Sean adds. Eventually a wedding was planned for 2014. For the big day, Sean and Eric compromised to create the perfect wedding that gave them each what they wanted. “We both wanted an elegant, traditional wedding,” Sean says. However, while he had his eyes set on the perfect venue, Eric longed for a religious ceremony. The couple also readied to spend the holidays in France where they planned another wedding reception with friends and family who were not able to come to our wedding in California. Later, Joshua recognized Melanie on a friend’s “top eight” on Myspace and decided to add her to his social media page. “We had a conversation that kept going back and forth,” he says. “I wanted to get to know her more.” So, Joshua asked Melanie out for coffee, where they chatted for more than four hours, and the rest is history. advantage of the family gathering. “He knew that family meant a lot to me so he made sure everyone was there,” Melanie says. “It wouldn’t be a proposal without my family.” When the day finally arrived, Melanie and Josh’s wedding offered a little something different for guests—they had a combined Cambodian and American ceremony. The father/daughter dance at the wedding was a highlight for Melanie, as it was their first. “In a Cambodian tradition we don’t have a father daughter dance,” she explains. In fact, in order to make the special moment a reality, she kept it a secret from her dad, who isn’t a big dancer, until it was announced at the reception. Other highlights included the mother/son dance, Joshua’s speech and the best man speech—which definitely went off-book.
“I won’t lie, the day after our wedding was pretty intense,” Melanie admits. “It was hard and there were definitely tears from both of us.” As the couple thumbed through their guestbook the floodgates opened, they were already missing the family and friends that just hours before had been in their presence—many of who live out of state. “It was such a treat to have our family all together for the weekend, to watch our family interact with our coworkers and friends,” she says. “Married life so far has been amazing,” Melanie gushes. They couple started a ritual of making breakfast together, and she even says Joshua is more attentive now—taking more time to text and call her throughout the day, or planning small surprises like a special date night or gift.

e consider it a modern day love story,” Cristina giggles in response to meeting her husband Michael online in December 2012. Both with busy schedules pursuing graduate school and career paths, the two chatted on the phone before Mike flew to Orange County for their first date. That first encounter was full of emotion, as Mike explains. Cristina immediately wowed him with her drive, happiness, sweetness, faith in the lord, and their compatibility. “We would fly or drive every other week to see each other for the first two years,” Mike continues, “I knew this would be a three-year venture because Cristina had just began her master’s program.” Trust, as Cristina explains, was the core of their long distance relationship. “With trust comes freedom.”

To honor Cristina’s Mexican heritage- Mike gathered both sides of the family in Orange County to ask for her hand in marriage. After their blessing, Cristina woke to a bouquet of roses and dinner reservations in Sacramento. There, he went down on bended knee and asked her to be his wife. Mike’s mother, Helen, was a huge help in the planning of their big day. “She was involved in everything from top to bottom,” the couple chimes in, “She did such an amazing job!” Mike’s jawdropping moment of the day was when the church doors opened and he saw Cristina for the first time. “I know her dad was standing there too, but I couldn’t even see anyone but her at that point. I didn’t breathe for a couple seconds.” The reception was full of smiles, laughter, and dance. “After they announced the wedding party, and us it was only Mike and I in the middle of the dance floor,” Cristina says with a smile. “And all of a sudden he does a summer salt, and we were doing the Carlton, it was great.”

hea’s mother may just be the one responsible for her and Ryan’s happily ever after. She isn’t the one who introduced them in August 2012, but she did play a vital role. During a summer at home in Lodi, Shea got into CrossFit. Upon returning to school she asked her mother to help her find a CrossFit gym to work out at. That’s when her mother recommended North Rim CrossFit, a gym Ryan just so happens to own. “While I was filling out [a waiver], I heard the lady trainer tell me she wanted me to meet the owner Ryan. I turned around and saw Ryan standing before me,” Shea recounts. “Over the next few months we talked more and more after classes and became friends and soon enough started dating.” In October 2014, Ryan popped the question on a surprise trip to Salt Lake City. Shea says she never found anything about the trip suspicious—even though he originally told her they were simply headed to Sacramento before exiting near the airport—because she assumed the entire plan was for her birthday. The city had become a special place for the couple so it made the perfect setting for Ryan’s sunset proposal in the mountains. “It wasn’t until I saw him walking towards me with his arm behind his back that I knew,” Shea says. “I immediately started crying. He got down on one knee and told me he wanted me to have a story I could tell our family, friends and kids one day of how he asked me to be his forever.” Almost exactly one year later the two were wed. A photo booth was set up for guests, succulents were given as favors and kettle corn was doled out as a late night snack, all leading up to a sparkler send-off.

igh school sweethearts Antonio and Lorena got the surprise of a lifetime when they won University Plaza Waterfront Hotel’s Dream Wedding Giveaway in 2015. After getting engaged in April 2014, the couple decided to hold off on their nuptials until they could save up enough money to “do it right,” Lorena shares. “We got engaged… and we weren’t in any rush,” she says. They had already been together for seven years before their engagement so waiting a little longer didn’t seem like a big deal. However, when Lorena stumbled upon the giveaway announcement on Facebook, she decided to try her luck. “You never know,” she laughs. To enter, she sent an email. When they were chosen as part of the top ten, they had to make a video.

MAGGIE’S BRIDAL They were announced as the winners at a bridal fair in February 2015 and married a few short months later. “It just kind of fell in our lap at the perfect time,” she says. The contest not only allowed Lorena and Antonio to host a wedding they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford, it gave Lorena another gift. “It was just so stress-free… the vendors were just taking so much care of us,” she says. “It was a blessing to us.” There were some extras the couple had to pay for out of pocket such as centerpieces and her veil, but even those items came at a discount from the vendors putting on the affair. Now the couple is settling into married life. “It’s been great. Just to put that title on it was really nice,” Lorena admits. She is also enjoying sharing her unique engagement story with people who ask. While not the typical “romantic” proposal, according to Lorena, it was “so special” to her. Antonio popped the question when her best friend was in town over chicken wings and drinks at a local Applebee’s where her cousin works, knowing it would be important to Lorena that she was there. “All the sudden he just got down and proposed,” she says.

Walking distance from local eateries, nightlife and The Bay Centre shopping mall, there’s plenty to do nearby. Stretch your legs and head to the famed inner harbour just a few blocks away, where seaplanes, cruise ships and small boats dock, to enjoy the marina’s plethora of vendors— from culinary treats to one-of-akind artwork—and tasty seafood specialties. Don’t forget to glimpse the British Parliament Building, a gorgeous, historic structure right on the water, and tour the Royal BC Museum where natural and human history are displayed through three thoughtful exhibits. When you’re ready to relax, cozy up to the fireplace in your Diamond Room and spend an evening enjoying the expansive views offered through floor-to-ceiling windows. An in-room mini-bar stocks drinks and snacks to enjoy before ordering room service from the attached eatery—Catalano Restaurant, which serves Mediterranean cuisine, primarily from Spain and Italy. Then, slip into a plush robe and put on your slippers before heading down to the Spa at Magnolia for a serious rubdown.

WHERE to EAT: No Canadian retreat is complete without a sample—or two—of its most infamous dish. La Belle Patate is revered for serving up the best poutine—French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy—in the city. The menu boasts several variations on the classic, including Italian Poutine (poutine with meat sauce) and mish-mash poutine (loaded with pepperoni, bacon, mushrooms, onions and green peppers). Next up, locals will insist you dine at “Pag’s” better known to tourists as Pagliacci’s. Located at Broad
& Fourth streets, the eatery dishes up brunch, lunch and dinner, and everything on the menu will leave you craving more—despite generous portions. From The Big Easy (jumbo prawns, chicken, Italian sausage, bell peppers and mushrooms tossed in spicy Cajun marinara and served over penne with parmesan) to the Spaghetti Western (spicy meatballs and linguine in tomato sauce with parmesan) pasta is always a good choice at Pag’s. However, if carb-loading isn’t your mission, the menu also lists sandwiches, soups, salads, burgers and more.

WHAT to DO:
You’ve already toured the historic buildings and museums and grubbed on some of Canada’s best culinary surprises, so what’s next? It’s time for adventure! Head to the countryside, just a short drive from the bustling downtown, and trade in your seatbelt for a saddle. Simply dubbed Horseback Riding, the company offers assisted trail rides through the forest, on the beach or lakeside, allowing you to pick your scenery. The crew will trailer equine to several different locations so you can ride where you wish, and get whatever level of assistance you need, whether you’re riding for the first time or the 100th time. The mild climate and abundance of parks make exploration an easy and enjoyable task

north of the border. Start at Beacon Hill Park where you can cross bridges, view lakes and ponds and take in the gorgeous alpine scenery with a slew of animal friends, including a pair of bald eagles and a large family of Great Blue Herons. For more animal encounters, trek to the park’s petting zoo, where goats and giant peacocks reside. Add a touch of romance with a horse-drawn carriage ride through the greenery. If you didn’t get enough floral arrangements on your wedding day, head to the famed Butchart Gardens where colorful blooms are aplenty. This group of floral display gardens boasts nearly a million visitors each year. Then, rent a car and drive up the coast to the Craigdarroch Castle, a historic, Victorian-era Scottish Baronial mansion open to visitors. The walkthrough offers gorgeous views from top floor windows and feels much like a museum tour. On your way back to the city, stop off at Fisherman’s Wharf where resident seals flip for snacks. Don’t forget to feed yourself. The wharf is home to some kitschy kitchens, including Jackson’s Ice Cream Float, Victoria’s only floating ice cream store (serving up sixteen homemade flavors), and Rockn’Rolls, which sells Brazilianinspired Japanese fusion to Canadian sushi-lovers. Regardless of what route you take through Victoria, keep your eyes open; local art and statues are in plain view on nearly every corner. Perhaps one of the most poignant is located in Ship’s Point. Dubbed “The Homecoming,” the sculpture by Nathan Scott celebrates the 100th year of the Canadian Navy. Nearby, a mosaic whale statue adds color to the Inner Harbour and a painted dolphin swims outside of the Tourism Victoria Visitor Centre.

Mendocino
After you say, “I do,” it’s time to unplug and unwind, and there’s no better place to begin your journey as husband and wife than Mendocino County. Here, wine, romance, and coastal breezes are aplenty, and cozy country towns replace the city lights. So reconnect with nature—and each other—on the spectacular Northern California coast where you can relax and recharge together in tranquility.
Mendocino
LODGING:
Located on the Mendocino coast, The Elk Cove Inn & Spa in Elk offers a serene setting for couples to spend quiet time alone. Book a stay in a uniquely decorated guest room at this quaint, craftsman-style B&B. From cliffside cottages to oceanfront junior suites, couples have their pick of scenery and décor. While the communal dining area hosts a breakfast to die for and the spa offers a healing sanctuary with treatments designed for couples, the real treasure is found outdoors. The waterfront property boasts sweeping ocean views from its secluded locale atop a bluff and more than a mile of prime beach just steps away. Take a walk to the local market in downtown Elk and pack a s’mores survival kit for a quiet evening on the beach. Fire pits are available for guests who want to sip local varietals while they enjoy the ocean views and warm their toes by the fire. As you slip into deep conversation, or perfectly peaceful silence, don’t forget to keep an eye out for the wildlife that frequents the property—including deer that dare to come within steps of your front door.
TAKE A DRIVE:
Seek adventure in Anderson Valley, where a vibrant brewery and taproom—Anderson Valley Brewing Co.—and a plethora of tasting rooms offer ample opportunity to imbibe. At the valley’s center is Booneville, a former redwood logging community now heavily occupied by vineyards. The varied weather, elevation, and soil produce a range of flavorful Mendocino County grapes, though as a whole the area is known for its award-winning Pinot Noirs. In fact, Goldeneye Winery’s 2005 Pinot Noir was served at President Obama’s inaugural luncheon. No trip, however, is complete without a stop into Navarro Vineyards—located in nearby Philo—where Zinfandel and Pinot Noir-heavy Navarrouge is an award-winning choice. If wine tasting isn’t on the agenda, the quaint downtown is still a desirable place to stop off of Highway 128. Filled with small shops, fine art and tasty treats, here you can get your hands on a piping-hot cup of coffee at Zubzub to heat things up, or cool it down with a scoop of ice cream in fun flavors at the same spot. The twisty two-lane road is also perfect for a drive to nowhere.
MORE TO DO:
The weather is almost always gorgeous in Mendocino, which means you can partake in outdoor exploration nearly every day of the year. From riding horseback along the beach to swinging a club at a local course, there’s no reason to stay indoors during your trip to the coast. So soak up the sunshine and get moving with bike tours, hiking trails, kayak rentals, and more. Whether you’re stepping foot into the Greenwood State Beach Visitor Center & Museum or strolling barefoot in the sand, every activity is dripping with romantic possibilities, especially when executed at sunset. 96

Elegant Flowers Make Arrangements: Find a collaborative floral designer with whom you connect. Reputable florists will be able to supply references and a work portfolio.
Set a Budget: Although fiscal demands of weddings vary depending on their elaborateness, plan on setting aside about 8 to 10 percent of your total budget for flowers.
102
SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS
When it comes to picking out flowers for your wedding, don’t be a late bloomer; plan ahead to make sure that everything will come up roses on your big day.
Stick to your Style: Not only should blooms be season and style appropriate, they should also complement bridal party attire (especially the bride’s gown), venue, theme, and color palette. Bring fabric and/or color swatches to meetings with florists.

SweetTemptation Do Your Homework Collect wedding cake photos and other things that inspire you to share with your wedding cake confectioner
Eye Before You Buy: Don’t be in a sugar rush to make a decision. Ask questions, sample the goods, and be open to ther ideas.

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS
An ideal wedding cake should hit the sweet spot. to find the object of your confection, keep the following factors in mind.
Consider the Logistics: It’s okay to be sweet on style as long as you’ve thought about the nuts and bolts of cake-making. Arrange a complimentary tasting, discuss plate/ pillar rental fees and delivery costs, and be aware of payment and cancellation policies.
Bekery: Before settling on a particular cake maker, shop around. Find a baker who is open to your vision, and has the skills and experience to execute it.
Make it Yours: A cake should complement your indiviaul aisle style and your wedding’s theme, color, and attire. It shoud also reflect the couple it celebrates, so use monograms, bridal gown accents (think lace and ribbon), or another unique touch to personalize it.
