SIZZLING SOUPS

What makes you think of fall? For me, it’s cozying up with a warm bowl of soup. The smell of veggies simmering in a savory broth brings forth nostalgic childhood memories of my favorite time of the year. Thanksgiving is all about family, togetherness, and gratefulness—and gathering in thanks is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season. Before consumerism takes its toll, take a moment to look around and appreciate it all, even if it doesn’t seem like much (you are here, and it is). If you have a warm, safe home, some food in your fridge, and a few hundred dollars in your bank account, you’re sadly in better shape than a massive chunk of the country. Though at times the rat-race that has tainted the American dream is overwhelming and exhausting, we have to do it. Why? Because we need basic physiological needs met to reach our highest self, and we deserve that more than anything. While the economic inequality in San Joaquin is enough to make anyone scream, keep on cringing at the flashy local business owner who’s a big fish in a tiny pond with the huge truck, because he’s stuck on the fourth level of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and chances are he’ll never reach self-actualization. So, jokes on him. But you, my friend, have a chance. ‘A Theory of Human Motivation’ written in 1943 by Abraham Maslow explores a five-tier model of human needs, often represented by a pyramid. The well-respected psychology theory states that individuals must satisfy lower level needs like food, water, warmth and rest before moving on to meet more growth and success. So, how do people without those fundamental needs succeed? In our county, we’re hoping a housing-first approach does just that. A chat with Supervisor Miller in our feature that covers the homelessness crisis in our county informed us that years of studies ensure housing-first programs allow those without a stable environment the chance to work through underlying issues that have shown their face as drug addiction, mental illness, and homelessness. And as the holidays creep up, I ask, ‘What kind of person are you?’ Are you a coward fuled by ego who lacks courage and empathy in unpleasant situations? Or, are you fighter, a leader and a mentor who chooses to address the uncomfortable issues at hand, instead of shy away? Next time you pass someone on the street, greet them with the same kindness you would a passerby at Nordstrom. We’re all human, here. And we’re in this together. God Bless,

Harvest season means late nights and early mornings. It means missing out on important milestones. It means working an insane number of hours each day to get your olives picked and processed. It’s a sacrifice. But it’s one that the Coldani family is happy to make. And today, two generations of family are working together to build an olive oil empire to sustain the next generation of farmers. The Coldani family owns and operates Calivirgin Olive Oil, based in Lodi where their roots run deep and their passion for the craft grows every day. It’s a family business started by Jeanne and Steve Coldani, their children Gina and Mike, and his wife Julie. They all wear many hats, as family businesses often go. From harvesting and processing to marketing and trade, they each play an important role in running the family business.

From the branch to the bottle, the road to award-winning extra virgin olive oil is a complicated orchestra of schedules and equipment, but it all begins in the field. Their orchards near Interstate 5 and Highway 12 are planted with tight, manicured rows of olive trees. This trellis system, developed in Spain and adopted by the Coldanis, allows the olives to be mechanically harvested and opened the floodgate for faster processing and a fresher product. As the olives ripen and the days grow shorter, the family preps their harvesters and equipment for a solid month of constant use. And then, as sure as the sun shines, the season beckons the Coldani family to their olive orchards for their favorite time of year—harvest! Mike Coldani takes samples from the olives to test their oil content, assuring him harvest time is here. As they continue to ripen, the polyphenols decrease, and he knows its time to go. Meanwhile, Julie rushes the kids to school, attends a meeting for the school’s harvest fair, and then

heads back to work to arrange for the ordering and delivery of the fresh produce to arrive just in time for harvest. You see, Calivirgin is famous for their vibrant and delicious flavored olive oils. But, what makes their olive oil different from many of the competitors on the market? Calivirgin crushes and mills the fresh fruit or herbs directly with the olives. The oils from the produce are extracted and the result is an intense and fresh-flavored olive oil. It’s a challenge coordinating the delivery of the produce to coincide with the harvest, but it’s an important job to keep their continuous flow machine running. Their current flavor line-up includes: basil, lemon, garlic, oregano, blood orange, habanero, jalapeno, and garlic jalapeno. “We still get so excited about harvest,” says Julie Coldani. “Everything we do all year is based on the success of this month!” Each morning at 5 AM, Mike jumps on the mechanical harvester and begins picking the olives into macro bins. After a few loads, he heads back to begin milling. There are always four crew members to watch and run the machine, checking for M.O.O., AKA, material other than olives. “For me, harvest provides a real sense of accomplishment—growing and making a healthy product for people to enjoy,” Mike Coldani explains. “There is nothing quite like the first oil coming off the machine, grabbing a loaf of bread and tasting the fruits of your labor.” Both Jeanne and Julie alternate in cooking the harvest crew’s lunch and dinner. It means they are coordinating meals and schedules to make sure everyone is nourished for the arduous month. “Sometimes it’s two people sitting down to grab a quick
meal, sometimes there are ten people,” Julie laughs. “I like to bring our kids along to see their dad at work.” It forces them to be flexible as a family and Mike and Julie think it’s an important lesson for the children to see them hard at work. But, they do have one rule during harvest. They try and take off Sunday every week to spend time with their family. After working 15 to 18-hour days, it allows them to recharge and take a breath from the bustle of harvest. And if harvest leaves them with any spare time, fear not, their season also coincides with the busiest retail time of the year—the fourth quarter! So, while Mike is busy harvesting, the rest of the family is coordinating sales and marketing campaigns to push their brand-new product with consumers. Calivirgin is thrilled to have their products featured in Williams Sonoma, but most of their efforts to sell their olive oil is grass roots. They attend the local Farmers Markets, community events, and food festivals, and promote their membership and corporate gift programs to consumers. Needless to say, the Coldani family keeps busy. HATCHING PROGRESS WORKSHOP/CO-OP AIMS TO INVIGORATE DOWNTOWN STOCKTON BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER
For years the enormous potential of Downtown Stockton has lingered, in wait of someone with the right vision and resources to break through the glass ceiling and actualize it. Enter Phoenix and Malachi Trent. Brothers by blood and business, the New York natives have been working together since childhood. It is through their team effort— and just the right amount of community backing—that Downtown Stockton will finally see its potential realized. Hatch Workshop is their 501(c)(3) nonprofit in progress. Part workshop for both students and community members, part Live/Work Co-op, part Artists in Residency program, Hatch plans to bring all this and more to downtown Stockton from their headquarters on Acacia Street. Just months away from opening its doors,

Hatch’s mission is to invigorate the city with the artists and makers mindset that has revitalized cities like Oakland, CA and Brooklyn, NY. “We want people to realize that if they have a passion for the arts and crafts, you can go into the trades and successfully sustain yourself,” says Phoenix, CEO of Hatch. “With our workshops and classes, we hope to create entrepreneurs that start their businesses down the street and drive Stockton’s economic growth.” While Hatch’s Artists in Residency and Live/Work Co-op programs will attract seasoned artists and makers, their Inspire Youth program will no doubt be highly attractive to parents looking for a constructive extra-curricular activity for their children. In partnership with the San Joaquin County Office of Education, Inspire Youth is designed to provide a safe space for kids

I love teaching woodworking and metal working because it’s therapeutic for people,” says Malachi, Executive Director at Hatch. “It’s full-focus, almost like meditation.” Opening with their youth programs, community workshops, studio memberships and rentals, the later stages of Hatch’s development will include the establishment of a Gallery, Artist Residencies, and the Live/Work Co-op. They also have a small theatre in the building where they plan to host a variety of activities. “We want this side of downtown to be a buzzing hub of an area, and we think we can make it happen,” says Phoenix. “Bringing the arts and crafts to an area that has so much potential and so much life—it’s exciting.”

Many locals once looked upon the city’s old buildings as forlorn reminders of better days. But today, the beauty in these spaces are once again celebrated, granting old walls a new lease on life. Lovers of vintage already know that just because something is old, doesn’t mean you need to dispose of it. Shontay Rodriguez, owner of Lilou of the Valley Boutique in Stockton, is one of those people. “I never wanted to look like everyone else,” says the lifelong Stocktonian. Vintage clothes offered the alternatives she desired, but they also became a way to make a little extra money. Fast forward to 2017, when Shontay and her husband Branden opened their vintage shop. “My daughter’s name is Lilou,” says Shontay. “Which is Lily in French, and 34

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2018
we’re in the Valley. So our name is a nod to our city.” And just like a Lily-of-the-Valley, the shop is off the beaten path. “I wanted it to be in a historical part of town,” she explains. “And I wanted to open people’s eyes to a whole other district.” The district she’s referring to is the area South of Harding, which has been catchily coined “SoHard” (think “SoHo”, but much cooler). And speaking of catchy, many people have fallen in love with Lilou of the Valley’s incredible slogan: “Cute as a button, tough as concrete.” “It’s an old thought,” Shontay says. “Women have to know when to be soft, but also when to be tough.” But it was also inspired by the button collection she inherited from her husband’s grandmother. “I make things, too,” she says. “So, I was making button earrings, because I didn’t want to just keep them. It’s like the old war-
time effort—nothing goes to waste.” And it’s the idea of ‘nothing going to waste’ that makes vintage shopping so wonderful, especially when you’re lucky enough to find high quality items: “If items are preserved properly, they’ll last a while. But things used to be made better—better fabric, and better sewing.” So expect to find long lasting jewelry, handbags, hats, shoes, and clothes within her shop. “I’d like to say I can dress a person head to toe—not necessarily all in the same decade!” Have a request? STOCKTON WORDSMITHS IN HONOR OF NANOWRIMO, A ROUNDUP OF FAMOUS LOCAL NOVELISTS BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER When the leaves turn and the morning chill lingers long past dawn, aspiring writers everywhere are firing up their laptops in honor of National Novel Writing Month, AKA, NaNoWriMo (Na-Noh-REE-Moh). The goal? To spin a hefty 50,000 words into a thrilling tale by the end of November. It’s a tall order, but we believe in you! From New York Times Best-selling authors to esteemed novelists who contributed to the literary cannon, San Joaquin has produced some fantastic authors from whom we can all take inspiration.
DENNIS ETCHISON A horror/thriller novelist, Dennis Etchison was born in 1943 right here in Stockton. Settings of his terrifying tales often reveal his California roots—long desert highways, shady liquor stores marked by stuttering neon signs, and the hollow 36

darkness that sometimes plagues the valley on summer nights. His most well-received work is a collection of short stories called The Dark Country which won the World Fantasy Award (tied with Stephen King’s Do the Dead Sing?) as well as the British Fantasy Award. Stephen King himself has deemed Dennis “one hell of a fiction writer”.
MAXINE HONG KINGSTON Born in Stockton in 1940 to first-generation Chinese Immigrants, Maxine Hong Kingston’s experience as part of the Asian-immigrant community in America drives much of her work. Maxine attended Edison High School and went on to major in English at UC Berkeley. Her first book, The Woman Warrior: Memoir of a Girlhood Among Ghosts, was published in 1976. A blend of memoir and Chi-
nese myth, the novel won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction and led Maxine to emerge as a leading contemporary Chinese-American writer. An activist as well as author, Maxine’s work is poignant and powerful, often heavy with anti-war and feminist themes. LEONARD GARDNER If you’re a Stocktonian and you don’t know who Leonard Gardner is, shame on you! Just kidding. But really, though, Leonard wrote an American classic that’s based right here in your hometown—you will have no doubt seen a couple storefronts bearing the same name of his famous novel, Fat City. our palate has evolved from being a base instrument of survival distinguishing poison from nutrients, to a conduit of near transcendent pleasure and happiness—now, combine that taste with various textures and the contrasting sensations of hot and cold, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for Nirvana. Just picture it: a piping hot bowl of soup on a chilly November evening, steam spiraling off the surface—a spiritual experience, indeed. To help you satisfy your spirit this winter, we rounded up a list of some of the best soups in San Joaquin to quench your every craving. BACON CHILI FROM MIDGLEY’S PUBLIC HOUSE The origin story of Chili is as opaque as its texture, muddled in myth of spirits, out-of-bodyexperiences, and 18th century Islanders. However, most historians will tell you that the earliest written description of chili came from a man named J. C. Clopper who lived near Houston, Texas. This tale holds the most weight, as chili stands began popping up in San Antonio as early as 1880. By the roaring 20’s, chili was a Texas staple, and a literal life-saver for Texans during the Great Depression. Thus, it’s only fitting that Midgley’s Public House’s award-winning Chili is made Texas-style.
“Texas style means no beans,” says Lacie Midgley, Co-Owner of Midgley’s Public House. And don’t think for a second that “no beans” means you won’t feel full—this chili stars filet mignon and bacon, and is packed with red chilis, Fritos, fried onions, cheddar cheese, cilantro, and green onions. Having won several years at the Santa Cruz Beach boardwalk chili cookoff, the chili at Midgley’s an experience unlike any other in the county. As to why customers should give it a try this winter, Lacie puts it best when she asks, with a laugh, “Who doesn’t love filet mignon and bacon?”

RAMEN FROM KOMACHI SUSHI It comes as no surprise that the most unique flavor on the palate comes from Japan, a country known for its out-of-this-world cuisine. Thus, it’s only fitting that the dish representing such a flavor should also be a Japanese staple. Enter ramen, the dish you so good you can’t help but slurp. Lucky for you, in Japanese culture, slurping is customary: air bubbles help enhance flavor and cool down the temperature. And, it lets the chef know you’re a fan. First introduced to Japan by Chinese immigrants anywhere between the 17th and 20th centuries (the true origin story is still up for debate), ramen consists of four major parts: tare (a seasoning base), broth, noodles, and toppings—after that, all delicious hell breaks loose. Ramen varieties are truly endless, and if you’re hankering for a taste, try any one of the five delicious options offered at Komachi Sushi in Lodi. “We have our ramen evaluated by the ramen professionals from Japan. They said ours was on point and were very impressed with our broth,” says Tim Chang, Owner and Chef at Komachi. “Tonkotsu Ramen is our most popular.” A savory pork bone-based soup, Komachi’s Tonkotsu Ramen is simmering with pork, seaweed, fish cake, and green onion. Initially a blue-collar favorite, ramen eventually took on a nostalgic glow of a time when Japan was on the economic rise just before the nation settled into its prosperity. To this day, 80 percent of ramen shops in Japan are small businesses, keeping this comforting dish even closer to home.

TOM KA GAI FROM TRACY THAI Modern day Thai cuisine is the result of integration of various cultural influences over hundreds of years, including those of China, Europe, India, and even Japan. Such mixing of foods and styles have led the Thai people to develop a sort of resourcefulness with their cooking, for example, to replace the ghee used in traditional Indian cooking, Thai chefs began using coconut oil and coconut milk, two popular Thai ingredients to this day. Tom Ka Gai, or coconut chicken soup, is the ultimate winter comfort food you didn’t know you needed. Like most Thai cuisine, this soup is all but bursting with spice, adding a nice kick to this cozy 60

dish. Ingredients include lemongrass, coconut milk, chicken breast, kafir leaves, chili oil sauce, sliced mushrooms, and the most surprising addition, galangal root, which packs a sharp punch of citrus and earthy flavors. All of this is of course draped in coconut milk and simmered to perfection. “Our Tom Ka Gai is a very popular soup, especially during winter,” says Gesa Ranee of Tracy Thai. “Coconut milk is a well-known ingredient in Thai food, and it’s got a nice creamy, sweet and sour taste that customers love.” With the addition of galangal root (and it’s several health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties) this soup is also a certified cold-buster!

NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER FROM BUD’S SEAFOOD GRILLE Of all the clam chowder styles, in San Joaquin, there’s no question that New England Clam Chowder rules the soup-scape. The creamy chowder is chock-full of potatoes, onions, and other chopped vegetables—and, as Ishmael in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick lovingly describes, “small juicy clams, scarcely bigger than hazel nuts.” And yes, clam chowder has been around since the publication of Melville’s famous novel in 1851. In fact, it’s believed to have been a common dish in Europe since the early 1700s, gaining traction in America by 1836, when it began to grace the menu of Ye Olde Union Oyster House in Boston, the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the country. But, if you’re looking for the good stuff, you don’t have to travel to the East Coast. You’ll be pleased to know that the best clam chowder resides right here in San Joaquin, at Bud’s Seafood. “Many people have told us that they use our clam chowder as the ‘gold standard’,” says Bud Millsaps, Owner of Bud’s Seafood in Stockton. “A boss of mine went up east coast years ago and said they had chowder everywhere, but few of them could compare to ours. We make our chowder from scratch, full of clams and all the good stuff. On a cold day, you can’t beat it.”

POZOLE FROM LA PALMA MEXICAN CUISINE If you’ve yet to try this dish, you’re seriously missing out on a knock-out comfort food with a ton of history behind it. Mexican Pozole goes all the way back to the days of the Aztecs, featuring the main ingredients of hominy, pork, and garlic, and can be served with a variety of garnishes including chiles, onions, and avocado. Because the Aztec and Mesoamerican peoples believed that humans were created by the corn gods, the cornbased hominy ingredient warranted that this dish only be enjoyed on very special occasions. This tradition continues today, as pozole is most often served at weddings, Mexican Independence Day, or Christmas. At La Palma restaurant in Stockton, they make sure their Pozole stands out from the crowd. “In Mexico, they make both green and red pozole, but in Stockton, you can only find the red,” says Rafael Duarte, owner of La Palma. “We make our pozole with green sauce instead, like the authentic pozole from Mexico. It’s the best in town!” This historic dish has been craved and consumed for centuries, so be sure to add it to your list of winter warmups this holiday season—maybe even add it to the menu of your Holiday dinners!

CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP FROM CORNER SCONE BAKERY Both chicken soup and noodle soup have been around for ages—the former, a medicinal dish concocted by the ancient Greeks, who believed chicken soup cured various maladies, including bed wetting and leprosy—the latter, a staple of Asia, breaking ground as early as the 13th century. The first people to bring the combination to the masses was, unsurprisingly, Campbell’s. However, if you’re looking to avoid the sodium bomb in canned soups (and most of us are), homemade chicken soup is where it’s at! This is something that Terrie Green, Owner of Corner Scone Bakery in Lodi, knows to be true. “Soups made from scratch become individual, unique batches with their own characteristics that stem from the cook’s creativity!” Terrie says. More than that, Chicken Noodle Soup is comforting, especially on a cold winter day. “Worries go down better with soup,” adds Terrie. But this dish is far more than just any comfort food. Both our grandmothers and modern scientists assert that this soup has medicinal qualities, especially if it’s packed with vegetables such as garlic, ginger, carrots, and onions. TOMATO BASIL FROM MEZZO RESTAURANT One of the top comfort foods in the US, it’s hard to believe that there could have ever existed a world without tomato soup. But, history tells us that the seemingly simple recipe didn’t break ground until its first published mention in an 1857 cook book. However, what really made tomato skins fly was Joseph A. Campbell’s recipe for condensed tomato soup 40 years later in 1897. Today, recipes and variations of tomato soup abound, from bisques, to the Spanish Gazpachos, to cream of tomato soup—all starring everyone’s favorite vegetable impersonator. (Juicy and sweet? We should have known this thing was a fruit from the get go!) At Mezzo Restaurant in Stockton, you’ll find yet another variation of tomato soup, Tomato Basil. “It has that spicy flavor of garlic, basil to brighten it, and of course the sweetness of the tomato,” says Melissa Goodman, General Manager at Mezzo. “It uses locally grown preserved tomatoes, picked at the height of the season. They’re amazing.” The fact that the first recorded tomato soup recipe is over a century old just proves that this soup is a cold-weather classic that is truly timeless. “It’s a total comfort food,” concludes Melissa. “It’s a great start to any meal.”

when you pass the man panhandling on the street, or the woman pushing a cart full of her belongings—do you acknowledge their existence as a living, breathing human being? Or do you scurry away and avoid eye contact? “Sometimes you get those people who are like angels, just when you need them,” says Andrea, a resident at Gospel Center Rescue Mission in Stockton. While experiencing homelessness after escaping human trafficking, she’d often use the Wi-Fi at San Joaquin General Hospital to apply for jobs in a quiet and safe place. A security guard looked Andrea in the eyes and told her, ‘Ask God for what you need.’ And in one of her most desperate moments, she felt hope. “People think it’s easy to be homeless. It’s not,” says JoLyn McMillian, CEO of Stockton Shelter for the Homeless. For years, stereotypes led the public to believe that this group of people was simply lazy.

But, statistics report that many Americans could find themselves in the same tattered shoes should they lose their job suddenly, or face an emergency with a price tag of only 500-1,000 dollars. Add sky-rocketing rent, lack of housing opportunity, and a 52 percent increase in homeless families to the mix, and you’ve got the new face of San Joaquin’s homeless: Today it isn’t just the people you see posted up on the street, it’s
families with young children sleeping in cars and camping at resorts to ensure access to hot water. “It’s our working poor,” says JoLyn. “Here, we have well-dressed well-spoken people who have lost their job due to illness or life getting in the way. And now days, people don’t have much in savings—and once you’re out of money there’s virtually no recovery.”

“It doesn’t always take long to end up on the streets, but it takes time to get out,” says Sal Azevedo, Director of Administration at Gospel Center Rescue Mission in Stockton, where the organization houses 170 adults and children. He himself was homeless at 19 years old, abandoned by his family. “People think, ‘He’s an addict, he’s a drunk,’ but I was never any of those things. These people are often experiencing years of ongoing trauma, and then being judged by the public.”

There are people out there who need the help and really want it. When we moved into the shelter we weren’t looking for a free ride, we were looking to get our lives back together. And the shelter helped us do that.

For Billy and Debbie Fowler, homelessness was as simple as a landlord who believed Billy would be unable to pay the rent after an injury, though he was working full-time. “Because I still had a job, we moved into a hotel with our three kids, and stayed there for six months,” he explains. However, the stress of being displaced resulted in Billy losing that full-time position, and the family quickly found themselves on the street. That’s when they turned to Hope Family Shelters in Manteca: with 90 beds, the organization services 23 families at a time through three shelter sites. “Four years ago, we implemented Project Hope, a case management intensive program overseen by a licensed family therapist and mental and behavioral health interns,” explains Chief Executive Officer Cecily Ballungay. The family and addiction counseling offered at Hope Family Shelters allowed the Fowlers to communicate openly with their children, stay clean, and work through

the stresses they had all endured. “My children are older, and I wanted to be open with them about how we got here,” Billy says. Through Hope Family Shelters’ Project Hope and transitional housing program, Billy and his family were able to stay off the street, receive continued support, and save up for their own home. “In that program, we had a set amount of rent based on our income,” he explains. “The place was very clean and very nice—it had a homey feeling. To know that we had up to X amount of time to save money and move out was a big relief. The support that we had around us, too, the other people living there and the family feeling was really great for us and the kids.” Billy is proud to report that after graduating from the transitional housing program, he, his wife and three children moved into their own home on January 10th 2018.
Trauma, abuse, addiction, generational poverty, and mental illness are key components to the issue at hand, and as County Supervisor Katherine Miller explains, “There are almost as many reasons for homelessness as homeless individuals. And that means there isn’t just one solution.” ‘A Theory of Human Motivation’ written in 1943 by Abraham Maslow explores a five-tier model of human needs, often represented by a pyramid. The well-respected psychology theory states that individuals must satisfy lower level needs before moving on to meet more growth and success. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs begins with basic physiological needs like food, water, warmth and rest, next is the need for safety and security, followed by needs for belonging, intimate relationships, and esteem. Once these levels are fulfilled, Maslow states people are motivated to set out on an adventure in search of self-actualization—though many are unable to climb the pyramid due to disruptions in lower level needs. Being unable to meet biological and physiological needs like food, shelter, warmth, and rest may seem far-fetched for some, though the reality and prevalence is unignorably relative as we live, shop, and work in San Joaquin. In effort to combat this issue, the county has now adopted a “Housing First” policy, embraced by the federal government. Supervisor Miller explains that, in the past, homeless individuals would first need to work through addiction, mental health or other issues before qualifying for housing—but now, it comes as a packaged deal. “The first thing you do is get people off the street and into some kind of stable living environment,” Supervisor Miller states. Housing-first is supported by years of data: People are far more likely to be able to complete
necessary programs if their housing needs are met. Once physiological needs are met, the county and its incredible organizations step in to assist in the need for safety and security, including employment, health and overall wellness. Through a wide array of programs and case-work, the homeless in our county can take a step back and answer a question the general public typically asks: “How did I get here?” “We’ve learned that homelessness and addiction aren’t usually the primary issue,” says Sal of Gospel Center Rescue Mission. “It’s an
underlying trauma and the inability to cope and heal.” Through the Gospel Center’s most popular program, Adverse Childhood Experiences, those who find shelter at the organization work through trauma with professionals who provide tools to allow them to move forward. Programs like these empower women, parents, and children to break that cycle, and Gospel Center does it as a family. "That means something,” says Lisa Ramirez, a mother of six who has experienced chronic homelessness. “They are breaking that cycle, changing a life and community outlook.”

that when they think about homelessness,” JoLyn adds. And as parents, the reality of life on the street with your family can be crushing. “It’s really, really hard when you have kids—that’s when it hits you the most. That’s what opened my eyes,” says Billy Fowler, a past resident of Hope Family Shelters. “I will never miss a day of work again. I’ll have to be hospitalized before that happens.” For some, holding a steady job is foreign and the lifestyle change takes time. “I didn’t know what it was like to have a job and go to work every day, to get a paycheck. I never saw that growing up,” shares Christina, a resident at Haven of Peace. Chronically homeless for nine years, she didn’t know where to start. “Homelessness was all I knew.” The Haven guided Christina through the steps to create a resume and secure a job. But, it wasn’t easy. “I couldn’t find a job for the first three months, and when I did, I

“Turning away someone from a program like this—you don’t know if they’ll make it through the night. Could you imagine having the strength to come and then being turned away? We need more so that we can give more.” -Lisa Ramirez, Gospel Center Rescue Mission was fired because of my background. I wanted to give up, but the Haven kept me pushing forward.” But, what about those who don’t have support to move forward, i.e., the people you pass on the street or see camped beneath the underpass, the people with untreated trauma, mental illness and addiction, the people who feel invisible? “The number one question I get asked is, ‘You’ve been working on this for four years; when will the homeless people stop being under the freeways?’ And I can’t give a date,” says Supervisor Miller. “It’s complicated, but I believe these programs will reach those people in time.” Though government isn’t known for moving quickly, a county Task Force has been formed, with Supervisor Miller as chair, to connect the many shelters, food banks, centers, and other incredible nonprofit agencies with a goal to combine forces in a focused effort to support the people who need it most. Sixty to 70 representatives of more than 50 local departments and agencies meet monthly to review efforts, brainstorm solutions, and collaborate. Their biggest success thus far? “We wanted to find a way to institutionalize the work of the Task Force. Typically, task forces are formed to make recommendations and then they go away—but we didn’t want this synergy to disappear. So, instead of reinventing the wheel, we looked for some sort of structure already in place in our county that would absorb the mem-

bers of our Task Force,” Supervisor Miller explains. Just this past year, they’ve transitioned into The Continuum of Care for Homelessness (CoC), a county-wide, result-driven program in support of comradery and compassion. “It’s just really inspiring the number of people in our county dedicated to making a real impact,” Supervisor Miller says. Today, the many shelters in the area work together with the CoC to provide well-rounded care and support for the nearly 10,000 residents they’ve served in the last year. But, as Sal at Gospel Center reports, there’s always a waiting list. “Turning someone away from a program like this, you don’t know if they’ll make it through the night,” says Lisa Ramirez, a resident of Gospel Center. “Could you imagine having the strength to come, and then being turned away?” Though homelessness is on the rise, success stories continue to play out. Just a few hours drive from San Joaquin County, you’ll feel worlds away as you sip your way through the busy wine ghetto, taste bites from family-owned gems, and take in the many collections of art—from museums to sidewalks to murals. Plan a November escape just before the holidays and enjoy the coastal breeze over a glass of the region’s most coveted Pinot Noir before strolling down a rocky beach. Lompoc is a town still finding its identity. It boasts many claims to almost fame as both a surfing destination and a rocket-launching military town (an activity that is still alive and well). However, the region’s most popular export is wine. It’s a mix of the region’s geography, created by the way the hills surround the Lompoc vineyards and the Santa Ynez River, and maritime weather resulting in brisk daily ocean breezes and early-forming, late-dissipating fog unfound in the rest of the United States, that is responsible for turning out some of the world’s most flavorful pinot noirs and chardonnays. In fact, many Santa Barbara wineries (and beyond) pull their grapes from Lompoc vineyards specifically for these flavor profiles. Explore Lompoc’s wine scene, a collection of tasting rooms representing more than 30 small production wineries in and around town, scattered across three destinations—the Lompoc wine ghetto, the Santa Rita Hills Wine Center, and Midtown Lompoc. The easiest place to taste is the wine ghetto where 19 urban tasting rooms—often occupied by the winemakers themselves during business hours—draw in customers. Don’t skip two of our favorites. Transcendence Wines has an F Street pinot noir that’s a must try, and it’s likely the winemaker will be the one pouring your glass. Two doors down, Zotovich Vineyards Tasting Room offers a wide selection of pours, and shares a winemaker with Transcendence. (300 N. 12th St.) If you haven’t gotten enough wine, head to Lompoc’s other two destinations. And, while in town, always pair meals with local vino. Most restaurants in town boast a wine list filled with favorites. Ask your server for suggestions. Expert advice: Expand your palette with the region’s coveted Bordeaux's and Rhones.
Pacific Ocean Play Situated on the coast along the Santa Ynez River, Lompoc enjoys a cool breeze and light fog year round. Regardless of the month, it’s usually a good day to hit the beach. Enjoy a nine-mile scenic drive through the Valley to the Ocean Beach Park & Estuary. The drive itself is a way to relax, coasting through farmland with ocean views, the destination, however, is where it’s at. Here the Santa Ynez River meets the Pacific Ocean creating a dynamic shoreline to be enjoyed from the rocks. There’s also a small gazebo filled with information about the area’s fauna and flora on-site. Any time of the day the views are photo-worthy, but come at sunrise or sunset to enjoy the best the urban ocean park has to offer. There are not many places where an Amtrak occasionally shoots by over the water chased by migratory birds that draw bird watchers from all over. (6851 Ocean Park Rd.) For another view take the 10-minute drive south to Surf Beach. This once-popular surfing destination has since lost steam after a series of shark attacks shook the city. Now it is simply home to the Amtrak station—and a favorite place to locals to snap photos at sunset.

Ignite Your Inner Artist
Art inundates every corner of this Central Coast city. From the painted crosswalks downtown—patterns of wine glasses and bottles take the place of standard stripes—to the murals painted on just about every building in the city, there’s plenty for art connoisseurs and the casual observer to enjoy. In Old Town Lompoc dozens of colorful murals decorate street corners, alley ways and the sides of prominent buildings. Most have a connection to the town’s rich history, taking you from the earliest days of civilization to more modern times. The only outlier perhaps is a large dinosaur that looks like it will jump off its wall and eat you if you get too close. The murals are a sense of pride for Lompoc residents, but they are only the tip of the town’s rich art roots. While exploring the art down town step into Cypress Gallery for a look at fine art made by more than 60 prominent local artists. The pieces range from giant canvas streaked with watercolors and oils to
smaller photographs, ceramics, and jewelry. (119 E. Cypress) Just across the street the Lompoc Museum features art of a different kind. The main exhibits are a collection of tools and artifacts from the Chumash and other Native Americans who used to inhabit what is now known as Lompoc. Downstairs you can learn more about the area’s wildlife. (200 S. H St.) Enjoy the architecture, too—stop by the Artesia School House, Andrew L. Huyck House, and the Italian Stone Pines before heading out. All of these are stops on the official Old Town Lompoc Heritage Walk (brochures available at the Lompoc Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, 111 S. I St.)

This locally owned family joint boasts a menu brimming with comfort food (we ordered up tuna melts on our trip in). The best, however, comes with dessert. A full menu of homemade pies made local daily fills the board. Pick one to share, or split a couple to try a few flavors. Before leaving Sissy’s, visit the attached wine shop. Here is a good place to stock up on bottles from your favorite wineries, as well as a few other goodies. (112 S. I St.) Locals also love 805 Chophouse for lunch or dinner. The veteran owned and operated business hosts two meals six nights per week (sorry—no Mondays!). There’s a little bit of everything on the menu including burgers, pasta and, of course, steaks. Finish every meal with a
craft beer on tap, or a glass of wine. (319 E. Ocean Ave.) When you’re ready for a gourmet meal, head to Valle Eatery + Bar. Located inside the lobby of the Hilton Garden Inn, this oneof-a-kind restaurant isn’t a standard hotel chain. Pizzas are baked in a wood-fired stove outside while servers bring out a constant flow of appetizers preceding your meal. In the heart of Lodi wine country sits an oasis waiting to be discovered. Beckoning you in after a long day of wine tasting, Towne House Restaurant’s welcoming décor will make you feel right at home (without the hassle of actually having to cook!). But no matter how talented you might be in the kitchen, it’s probably safe to say that nothing you make at home can compare to a meal planned by Wine & Roses’ Culinary Director, Bradley Ogden. With a critically acclaimed Bay Area culinary career, as well as two cookbooks to his name, one might wonder how Lodi got so lucky as to have Bradley working his magic at Towne House Restaurant at Wine & Roses. But his arrival here was simply a matter of good timing: in the process of looking for new opportunities, he reached out to Wine and Roses with an interest in doing wine dinners. He was soon brought on as a consultant, and before long became their Culinary Director. But while this James Beard award win-

dressing. Keep your eye out for their Niman Ranch Pork Loin Chop, cooked to perfection and served with freshly made spiced pear butter. Or look for duck breast, prepared Peking Style, and topped with a fig compote and served with local root vegetables and kale. And as for dessert, Chef Bradley recommends their butterscotch pudding. Made with fresh organic ingredients, and prepared and baked like a crème brûlée, it’ll be the perfect way to wrap up

And what better inspiration for a chef than having close access to ample amounts of fresh produce? “Just going to a farmer’s market and seeing something just picked, I’ll start thinking about what I can do with it,” said Chef Bradley. “How can I create a dish with this, and bring out the flavors?” One look at Towne House Restaurant’s seasonally changing menus will tell you that there’s no shortage of innovative dishes he can create with all the region-

ally sourced ingredients that are available. Together with Towne House’s chef, Paul Durias, they have made this a must-visit culinary destination, with exquisite dishes that combine rich and delicious flavors. Though they will always have a pork dish, fish plate, steak, and vegetarian options, the way they’re presented will vary depending on what’s in season locally. A new dish may last up to six weeks on the menu before it’s changed, making each trip to Towne House quite the foodie adventure. PASKETT WINERY & VINEYARDS RARE WINES IN A SPECIAL SPACE BY CAITLIN HAMER
If you believe you’ve discovered all your Lodi appellation favorites, think again! Add this new addition to your stops along the tasting trail. Paskett Winery and Vineyards’ roots run deep with nearly 50 years of winemaking experience, and just recently, the family decided to produce wines for the public. Now, we’re all able to enjoy the fruits of their labor—literally! “We’ve always known that we had special vineyards with beautiful fruit, and ideal soil and climate—and we’ve been eager to share our wines,” says Lorraine Paskett, owner of Paskett Winery. And with everything needed to make great wines, all that remained was a place from which to share them. “Finding the property felt serendipitous,” Lorraine says of their beautiful grounds, located on the historic Langford Estate. The estate dates back to the mid-1800s when it was established by Lodi’s first State Senator, Ben Langford. “My dad, Herb Paskett, found this property and fell in love with its history and what it represents for Lodi and the Lodi AVA,” explains Lorraine. “We wanted a place with deep roots that tapped into the regional pride,” she adds. “We restored the main house and
the schoolhouse and tried to replant trees and shrubs that would have been planted in the mid1800s. We preserved the old Gingko tree and the old olive trees.” With such a rare gem of a tasting room location, it’s no wonder that they’re known for producing wines that aren’t easy to find in the region. Their Charbono is just one of those wines. Paskett Winery & Vineyards has one of the only, and oldest, Charbono vineyards in California, located right on the riverbank of Langford Estate. Their Rosé of Charbono is another rare varietal, and this bone-dry blend with cherry undertones pairs well with rich foods, such as cheeses, lamb, or pork tacos. If you’re looking for a bottle

BEHIND theKNIFE: MICHAEL MIDGLEY of MIDGLEY’S PUBLIC HOUSE BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER
To foodies in the 209, Chef Michael Midgley is a culinary legend. Known for his role on the Bravo TV series Top Chef, Mike has solidified his fame with a big personality and bold flavors at Midgley’s Public House in Lincoln Center. But Mike’s story began long before his stint on television. Like many chefs, Mike’s education began at home drawing inspiration from his family’s Sunday suppers. By the time he was 14, he was torn between professional baseball and a culinary career. With a decision made, Mike enrolled at the California Culinary Academy and graduated at the age of 22. He bought a bar and began a catering business when the opportunity arose to work under Chef Steven Putnam at Wine & Roses. “Working under Putnam was a great learning experience,” Mike says. “He mentored me for the year and a half I spent in his kitchen.” But it wasn’t long before Chef Midgley found himself auditioning for Bravo Television’s Top Chef. He was cast in Season 2 and challenged the judges with his larger than life personality and unpretentious food. While it may have made him famous among audiences worldwide, it was a challenge for him to find work in any local kitchen when he returned to his hometown of Stockton. So, Mike returned to catering and teaching as a culinary instructor until

2009 when everything changed. Mike was granted an opportunity that would fulfill his desires: A restaurant owner who believed in him enough to let him run the kitchen. Dennis Williams of Ernie’s Food and Spirits in Manteca offered Mike a job. “The opportunity to work with someone who had such quality food and service was life-changing,” Mike professes. “It gave me a platform to show what I could do.” A few years later, the reputation he built at Ernie’s brought forth serious attention. Only this time, it was Mike’s time to truly shine. Teaming with Patrick Dobson and Phil Johnson, he brought his own restaurant to Lincoln Center. ORIGINAL RECIPES BY THE FINE FOODIE PHILANTHROPIST BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER There are a million reasons why we are wild about walnuts. One is because we love their slightly sweet and nutty flavor. Another is because walnuts are one of our region’s top crops, and supporting local farmers is key to the sustainability of California’s farmland. But more than anything, they are really, really good for us! The walnut is the oldest tree food known to man, dating back to 7000 B.C. The Romans referred to walnuts as Juglans regia or Jupiter’s Royal Acorn. They were often reserved for royalty and were traded along the Silk Road route between Asia and the Middle East. Which is why, throughout history, the walnut tree has
been highly revered. Walnuts are high in fiber which means they are metabolized slower and leave you feeling fuller longer. They are also an excellent source of protein, omega 3 fatty acids and healthy fat, and are low in carbohydrates. Because heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, it’s good to know that walnuts are extremely smart for your heart. There is mounting evidence that walnuts help reduce your risk for heart disease by lowering harmful LDL cholesterol, raising your HDL, decreasing blood pressure, and reducing inflammation. Need I say more? While China is the largest producer of
walnuts in the world, California comes in a close second. Over 90 percent of the walnuts grown in America are produced right here in the San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys. That means we have access to the freshest and finest walnuts on the market. If you purchase walnuts in bulk, keep in mind that their shelf life is shorter than most nuts and should be kept in the refrigerator or freezer for long term storage. Walnuts are more versatile than you think. If your idea of cooking with walnuts is limited to adding them to cookies and brownies, you are missing out on a crunchy addition to a multitude of dishes. From appetizers and soups, to main dishes and desserts, walnuts are a nutritional powerhouse.

WALNUT PARSLEY PESTO with BUCATINI

INGREDIENTS: 1 C. Walnuts 1 Tsp. Red Pepper Flakes 1 Small Garlic Clove 1 ½ C. Parmesan Cheese, finely grated 1/3 C. Olive Oil ¼ Tsp. Kosher Salt ¼ Tsp. Ground Pepper ¾ C. Bucatini or Spaghetti
INGREDIENTS: 1 French Bread Baguette, sliced 4 oz. Fresh Goat Cheese, room temperature ¼ C. Walnuts 1 Tsp. Olive oil 2 Tbsp. Honey 1 Tbsp. Chives, Chopped Sea Salt Cracked Pepper ½ Tsp. Orange Zest
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Toast walnuts on a baking sheet, tossing half way through, for 8 minutes. Let cool. Pulse ¾ C. of the walnuts in a food processor or blender until chopped. Save remaining walnuts for the garnish. Add garlic, parsley, parmesan and oil to the processor and pulse a couple of times until blended. Add the red pepper flakes, salt and pepper to combine. Meanwhile, cook pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water until al dente. Drain and reserve one cup of pasta liquid. Return the pasta to the pot along with the pesto and a ½ cup of the pasta water. Chop the remaining ¼ cup of walnuts. Divide the pasta among four bowls and top with the remaining walnuts, parsley and more parmesan if desired.

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush bread with olive oil and toast the baguette slices until golden brown. Spread goat cheese onto the baguette and top with chopped walnuts and chives. Drizzle with honey, garnish with orange zest and add salt and pepper. Serve immediately.
