K-9 CONNECTION
“Some of my best leading men have been dogs and horses.” – Elizabeth Taylor
I call my son by my dog’s name a few times a week. Does that make me a bad father? No. Does that make me an excellent pet owner? Yes. Though I’m guilty of more than just feeding my dogs table scraps… to me, being a great pet owner means: Adding a twin bed to my king mattress so that my great danes can fit, hair absolutely everywhere, and statues that resemble my dogs guarding the front of my house. Zeus travels with us almost everywhere, and I can’t get enough of the “can I pet your horse” bit. I feel so connected to my dogs, just coexisting. I couldn’t image the bond if they saved my rear end on the daily, helping me search buildings and find hiding aggressors. That’s a real bond. And it’s sweet to hear that our local police officers feel the same. In a cold world, k-9s are seen as tools used to spare the lives of officers. But, here in our county, these dogs are held in high regard. So much so that our officers personally pay for the purchase and care of each k-9 in the department, while fundraisers and contributions support local k-9 organizations and department upkeep, training, and function. The primary goal of these k9s and their handlers is to keep officers and the community safe. And that they do. Many dogs with years on the force have yet to apprehend a suspect with a bite and instead opt for a startling bark that almost always sends a resisting suspect directly to their knees, with no harm done. And that’s really what their aim. But make no mistake, the dog lunging toward a bite suit is anything but angry, get a look at his tail when you visit a local demonstration held by county police— the dog’s tail will be wagging. They’re living out their mission and doing what they’re happily trained to do. Also, dogs on the force often serve as emotional support animals for children caught in domestic dispute issues or other calls assigned through dispatch. An added perk? Officers report that their dogs make them more approachable—something local police really want. Officers feel the public is more likely to come to say hello when patrolling with their four-legged partner. So, next time you see them out and about, don’t hesitate to say hello! I know I will!

STAFFING the BEST CEO OF LARGEST WOMAN-OWNED BUSINESS IN THE COUNTY LENDS INSIGHT ON HER SUCCESS BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER
/
D
DAN HOOD
When Jennifer Wallace was awarded Stockton Chamber’s Business Person of the Year in 2016, people would often praise her for something else entirely. “They would come up to me and congratulate me on being the best female business person,” says Jennifer. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
209
the
“And I would say, ‘No, it was just ‘business person’.’” The distinction makes a difference. ‘Businessperson’ implies a level playing field—a field that every wave of feminism has fought for women to play on. As the owner of the largest woman-owned business in San Joaquin, however, Jennifer is often put in a position to stand up as a woman—she is not just a CEO, but a female CEO. She is not just a businessperson, but a businesswoman. Not that Jennifer doesn’t love being a member of the fairer sex—she just knows that her gender does not confine her abilities, accomplishments, and titles. “I just want to be a good boss,” she says. “Not a good ‘female boss’, a good boss.”
And a good boss she is. In the first year of owning her company, Premier Staffing, she more than quadrupled the mostly-female staff. During our phone-interview, Jennifer regularly exchanged comfortable quips with her employees in the background. When answering my questions, Jennifer most often began her responses with “we”—including her staff in her answers. “We’re very close, and I always encourage open communication,” says Jennifer. “You know how, whenever you go to a new job, there’s always that one person who stirs up drama? Not here; none of that would fly here.” At its core, Premier Staffing is your run-of-the-mill staffing agency, working with two sets

of clients: HR departments and firms in need of temporary or permanent employees, and temporary, temp-to-hire, and permanent employees in need of work. Serving Stockton, Lodi, and the greater Central Valley, Premier Staffing brings the two clients together in harmonious matrimony. As experts in choosing the best newhires, it makes sense that when Premier Staffing itself is hiring, Jennifer trusts 26

her own employees to send the right people her way. “Whenever we hire people to work in our office, I have my staff kind of vet the person so to speak—they talk to the person, take them out to lunch, and get to know them. If, after all that, my employees approve of them, then I see them for an interview.” It’s a healthy work environment, one that all managers should strive to cultivate in their offices. So, what’s Jennifer's
method? No micromanaging. “If you surround yourself with smart, qualified people, then you won’t have to micromanage,” says Jennifer. “If they need you, you’re there for them, but they can run their own ship.” When she first began her job at Premier Staffing, Jennifer was an entry-level staffer with no interest in sales. “I was scared to get into sales, but people had always told me I should,” she says. Six weeks in, her boss called her into his office. Jennifer thought she was going to get in trouble for talking too much, but instead, was promoted to Sales Manager. He recognized immediately that Jennifer was good with people, a trait that carries over to her company’s success today. “There are pages and pages of businesses just like us,” explains Jennifer. “Our clients could go anywhere, but they choose us because we work to cultivate very close relationships with our clients. That’s the key to our success.” And Jennifer will be the first to tell you that, while her company’s success is well deserved, it does come with its downsides—particularly for working mothers. “People say, ‘Oh you can have it all,’ but there’s always going to be something that suffers,” she states. “My oldest is 30, and my youngest is 13. When I had my oldest, I had no money, but all the time in the world to spend with her. For my youngest, I now have more money and resources, but less time. I know she feels the effects of that.” Yes, it is true that, as the owner of the largest woman-owned business in San Joaquin, Jennifer is often asked to stand up as a Woman. And, in the end, it’s the standing up part that matters most. “I used to only do things that I was the best at,” says Jennifer. “Then I thought, ‘No, get over yourself,’”—advice which she extends to up-and-comers, both female and not—“do what you’re good at, surround yourself with smart people, and be willing to learn. You’ll be successful.”

NOT JUST SKIN DEEP SELF-CARE STARTS WITH SKINCARE BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and certainly one of the most important, but knowing how to properly care for your skin isn’t an exact science. We walk past shelves of products everyday, see commercials and advertisements with freshfaced models everywhere, and likely pass a few day spas on our way to work. Simply pulling random products from the shelves likely isn’t going to transform your skin—and these claims to looking 10 years younger practically overnight feel false. Investing in a good moisturizer and face wash is paramount, but honestly, it isn’t enough. Read on to learn more about the skin care routines you should be practicing, and why DIY scrubs and products aren’t all Pinterest makes them up to be.
GET A FACIAL. Facials don’t just
make you look good, they also keep skin healthy by removing dead cells and targeting a deeper clean. Stop looking at them as a treat reserved for birthdays and bachelorette parties and instead make facials a key part of your skincare routine. Try This: An oxygen facial from Essentials Salon. This type of treatment boosts new skin growth and the “nutrient infusion” includes 87 types of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids.
SEEK OUT A MEDI-SPA.
Medi-spas have a reputation for being glorified Botox injection centers, but there’s more inside than a bunch of needles. Tons of procedures targeted at restoring youth are available to patients of all ages who want to put their best face forward with the help of a professional. Try This: A vampire facial isn’t too new of a concept but the bloody aftermath sometimes causes people to shy away. Consider this; a vampire facial uses PRP (platelet rich plasma) to generate new skin growth, which is the same portion of blood used to treat injuries such as muscle or ligament tears. 28

ASK AN AESTHETICIAN.
From Wine & Roses to Perfect Balance, San Joaquin County is brimming with day spas, which means there are plenty of aestheticians around for a consult. The products we use on our faces daily are important, but it can feel a lot like choosing blind if you don’t know what you are doing. Not
to mention those DIY products can wreak serious havoc on sensitive skin. Try This: Schedule an appointment for a treatment with an aesthetician and then pick her brain. These professionals are trained in assessing skin and making personalized suggestions. You won’t get a better recommendation for products anywhere else.

KOMBUCHA
Kombucha tea is a fermented drink made with tea, sugar, bacteria, and yeast. Kombucha is rich in probiotics (good bacteria) which can help maintain a healthy gut balance. According to Square, kombucha sales are up by more than 12 times from three years ago, and another research firm says the beverage is already worth an annual $600 million (and counting). Whether people choose the fermented, fizzy drink for the taste or for gut health, this beverage is more desirable now than ever.
MATCHA ACTIVATED CHARCOAL
Activated Charcoal is a form of charcoal that is “activated” by processing it at very high temperatures. The high temperatures change its internal structure, making it extremely absorbent. Activated charcoal’s negatively charged, porous texture helps trap toxins, preventing your body from absorbing them. Although the most widely used form is in emergency rooms to treat overdoses, it is now available to purchase in multiple retail settings in powder or capsule form. Research is in its early stages to prove its use for a wide range of medicinal and cosmetic uses such as a hangover cure, anti-diarrheal, deodorizer, and teeth whitener.

average-size avocado is made up of monounsaturated fats. According to the American Heart Association, monounsaturated fats can help reduce bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and lower the risk of heart disease. Due to their mild flavor, avocado is easy to incorporate into a variety of meals—in fact, avocado toast is also one of the most popular menu items from casual to fine dining restaurants with over 500,000 Instagram posts. Although they are nutrient dense, pay attention to portions: The current recommended serving size is 1/3 of an average size (medium) avocado.
COLLAGEN
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, and exists in the muscles, skin, bones, cartilage, and ligaments—making up about 25-35% of the human body protein content. Also known as the fountain of youth, U.S. consumers are expected to spend $122 million on collagen products this year alone. While the research is still out on the true effectiveness of the products, collagen is vital for our bodies to properly function. If you
Matcha is a finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves. Matcha powder contains a unique, potent class of antioxidants known as catechins. Some recent studies have linked the powder to a variety of health benefits, including helping to prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer, as well as encouraging weight loss. You can now find matcha in most health food stores, specialty drinks (smoothies, lattes), and even beauty products! When buying matcha green tea it’s important to choose the right type based on desired use. Culinary grade is ideal for food recipes, and ceremonial grade is the best type for drinking.

LOCAL FASHION MEETS FUNCTION WITH GREAT SPECTACLES BY CAITLIN HAMER / D ALY MONTEZ Lynda Winter is here to dispel any notions that glasses are a hassle. As the owner of Great Spectacles, she obviously understands the necessity of a well-fitting pair of frames. But, she’s also so efficient at finding you a pair you’ll love that you’ll wonder why you ever settled for anything less than the exceptional assistance you’ll find at her Stockton boutique. Although their Lincoln Center location has been in operation since 2002, the shop itself was established in 1990. Before that, though, Lynda had gathered plenty of optician experience working for three different optometrists over the span of 20 years. Lynda is now an independent optician, and although there is no optometrist in the office, she’s an expert at filling prescriptions. “I’ve been doing this for 50 years,” ex34

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018
plains Lynda, noting that fashion didn’t really factor into optician work at the time. But as a good optician, she knows that it’s not so much about the current trends as it is the person choosing their frames. “I’ve always cared about quality, about how people look. I care that they’re comfortable and happy.” The brands you’ll find at Great Spectacles reflect Lynda’s dedication to quality. From Chanel to Oliver Peoples and everything in between, you can sport designer eyewear in both prescription and non-prescription lenses. Because the Great Spectacles’ team attends optical shows in both New York and Las Vegas every year, they have an expansive selection of luxury brands to choose from. Which means, of course, that customers do too. So many choices may seem overwhelming, but anyone who enters Great Spectacles is in for a refreshingly relaxing experience. This is evident as soon
as you enter the tranquil shop, where Lynda and the employees are ready to offer one-on-one assistance to help you find your perfect frames. In addition to selling glasses, Great Spectacles also offers repairs and adjustments. Appointments for these services, or for choosing a new pair, are not required but are recommended if you would like assistance from a specific person. “Glasses are not a crutch,” promises Lynda. “And if you spend money on doing your hair, and on your makeup, you should be prioritizing your eyewear, too.” So put your faith in her and her store, and get ready to walk out of there with a new outlook on life—literally. 4 STEPS to PERFORM a BREAST SELF-EXAM BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
Camille Abeldt, Breast Health Nurse Navigator, RN, BSN, with Sutter Gould Medical Foundation sat down with San Joaquin Magazine to talk prevention in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Monthly breast self-examinations should begin as soon as you develop breasts. “Why?” Camille asks, “Because cancer can come at any age, and women should know their breasts intimately. Know how they feel, so that you can quickly catch any anomalies.” If you notice something that feels like a little, hard pebble or pea, contact your doctor immediately. “If breast cancer is caught early on, survival rates skyrocket. Today, we can treat breast cancer and there’s no reason women need to die from this disease,” Camille says. “A lot of women don’t even need chemotherapy because it’s caught so early and a lumpectomy is performed.”
STEP 1: Stand in front of a large mir-
ror and stretch your arms out to the side. Look at your breasts and how they differ in size and shape. Check for any discrepancies in symmetry. Are your breasts different shapes or colors? Is the skin dimpling? Raise your arms above your head and repeat the process.
STEP 2: While standing, place your
left arm above your head and cradle the back of your head with your left palm. With your right hand, knead your left breast in a circular motion starting at the nipple until you have covered the entire area. Repeat steps with right hand and right breast. Repeat steps lying down. 36
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018
STEP 3:
Examine your skin to check for dimpling or puckering, and changes in the texture or thickness. If you notice any skin changes that resemble an orange peel, Camille urges you to call your doctor right away, as this can be a sign of inflammatory breast cancer. STEP 4: Repeat steps monthly, and really get to know your breasts! Make self-exams a habit, and conduct them conveniently after you shower and are standing in front of the mirror. How do they usually feel and look? Anything out of the ordinary constitutes an appointment with your doctor, and of course, annual mammograms after 40 (or 30 if breast cancer runs in your family) are a must.

Long have San Joaquin sports fans wished for additional teams to call Stockton Arena home. So, it was quite the triumphant moment when it was announced earlier this year that the Sacramento Kings would be relocating their NBA G League franchise to Stockton. The aptly named Stockton Kings will begin their inaugural season at the arena this fall, opening with a home game against the Oklahoma City Blue on Friday, November 2. Fans can attend games throughout March, giving Stocktonians another chance to show off their gorgeous waterfront and delicious downtown dining options. Stockton residents aren’t the only ones thrilled about this move. Ty Ellis, head coach for the Stockton Kings, is full of optimism—both for his team, and for the city of Stockton. “I’m just really excited to be the first coach in Stockton Kings history, and I’m focusing on putting a good product out in the court and in the community,” he says. Ty has his own history with basketball, having played for 11 years domestically and abroad until 2012, when he began coaching. So, what’s the experienced man most excited 38
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018
to bring to Stockton? His answer is simple, and heartwarming: “Togetherness.” Whether you’re a fan of athletics or not, Ty promises that the fun of the event is that it’s pure entertainment. “We have to produce a product for people to come out and support,” he says. It’s also important to him—and many San Joaquin parents are sure to echo this sentiment—that this team creates an environment where families can bring their kids. “I’m excited about what this sport does,” Ty enthuses. “I’m encouraging families to look forward to good basketball and a great family night out.” He also hopes that the team will serve as inspiration to any aspiring local athletes. “Kids look up to professional athletes and emulate them. I didn’t know I could play until I saw that someone who looked like me could do it. That gave me the confidence to work toward that.” Much like their parent club, the Stockton Kings will sport the same colors as the Sacramento Kings—purple, gray, and black. You’ll definitely want to stock up on all the regal merchandise to show your city pride and team spirit! And keep an eye out for ticket announcements— you won’t want to miss out on the start of this exciting Stockton tradition!

D THE K-9
CONNECTION
POLICE AND THEIR PUPS ARE PARTNERS IN CRIME-FIGHTING D
ALY MONTEZ
When budget cuts hit our county’s police departments, K-9 units were the first to go. Today, our local police reach into their own pockets to reintroduce an essential crime-fighting element: One with a heightened sense of smell, a high drive, and a startling bark. In fact, it’s the bark that is the most effective, yet least aggressive, tool in support of the K-9 Units’ mission—to keep suspects and officers safe. Bark over bite is always the desired outcome, though officers stress that the latter

doesn’t indicate an upset or angry dog. In reality, it’s a loyal pup eager and ready to please his owner. Sure, these dogs train continuously and work 10-hour days performing narcotics detections, apprehensions, and search and rescue missions, but off the clock, they’re the family dog that craves love and attention. Much like their owners, our county’s canines are committed to positive community connection and want to engage. Catch them at the next demonstration, public event, or out on patrol. -LR

MARKO AGE:

K-9 QUIRKS:
Marko is crazy for his Kong toy. He will literally do anything for his toy, which he has with him 24/7. Having a high toy drive k-9 makes a good police dog, and Marko definitely fits the bill. He is great with children and ignores cats, dogs, and other animals. He is only interested in his work, his dad, and his Kong!
A DAY ON THE JOB:
Marko’s main purpose is to assist the Special Enforcement Unit (SEU) team in enforcement. He is first and foremost a patrol dog used in apprehension, tracking, locating evidence, and searches. Marko is first to go in to make sure officers are safe to follow. He works closely with the narcotics unit doing interdiction.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
K-9 OFFICER CODY DELLABITTA AND MARKO, SPECIAL ENFORCEMENT UNIT, TRACY POLICE DEPARTMENT
Marko has talked multiple people into custody with his “verbal judo.” During narcotics work he has alerted to and found multiple pounds of marijuana, multiple ounces of heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine throughout his career. He has found narcotics in a vehicle after officers have thoroughly searched it. Marko is the current interdiction K-9 for Tracy PD and has alerted to over seven hundred thousand dollars which was seized for asset forfeiture.

A lot of work is put into training a dog to work in this capacity—and having him do so not only keeps the deputies safe, but the community in which we serve as well. With the countless hours Admiral and I have put in, both training and working patrol, this is our ultimate goal and what makes us both enjoy our positions.

ABOUT

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: He’s only
had two apprehensions in the seven years we’ve worked together—which is a good thing! But we’ve had tons of arrests. He’s an excellent tool in protecting officers and the public.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING A PART OF THE K9 UNIT?
It allows people, especially younger kids [who don’t interreact with police officers that much], to get to know us.
HANGIN’ AT HOME:
When I first got Max, the trainer said to keep him in the back yard and slowly integrate him with the family. My daughter was about nine. I go outside and Max wasn’t in the backyard. I go back into the house to find my daughter. She’d made a tent out of blankets and Max’s tail was sticking out, wagging. It was an immediate match with the family.

My two-year-old is in love with Kabo and constantly wants to spend time with him. He’s amazing with my kids. He has such a well-balanced demeanor: a strong drive when it’s time to work—but a friendly, approachable, social dog off the clock.

ABOUT
RYKER AGE:
4 years old
WORK HARD PLAY HARD:
Ryker knows when he is at work and knows when he is at home. At home he is a lover and gets along great with my family and acts like any other dog. He loves to fetch a ball, play tugof-war, get treats and love from the family. When at work, he is more focused and in work mode.

suspect had just been taken into custody from a residential home which backed up to a sound wall along a highway. I was directed to conduct an evidence search with Ryker along the freeway side of the sound wall in an attempt to locate any evidence that may have been thrown over the sound wall. The area was all dirt and pine needle droppings. I sent Ryker out to conduct his article sniff and within about five feet he stopped and laid down, which is his alert he found something. When I initially looked down all I could see was a stick but after a closer look there was a bullet shell casing in the debris. He ended up finding 4 shell casings and 1 live bullet all in that area which matched the same caliber gun that was later located on the property of the suspect.

ABOUT
ROSCOE AGE:

K-9 QUIRKS:
At work, he’s very possessive of his patrol car, and me. If I get out of the car, he barks, if I start talking to someone he really barks! He’s extremely attentive and loyal.
HANGIN' AT HOME:
Off the clock Roscoe is a family dog. He goes camping and plays in the backyard with three young kids—they can do anything they want to him and he’s as gentle as can be. He’s a big part of the family. When we take holiday photos, you better believe he’s in them!
CAREER HIGHLIGHT(S): One time
he saved my rear end! A guy broke into a school campus and was hiding in the dark, but I didn’t know where he was. Roscoe alerted me that he could see someone, so I yelled for the suspect to show his hands. The guy dropped the large pipe he had and complied, as Roscoe kept his eyes on him.

Leading the San Joaquin County community in promoting the quality of life for animals since 1966!
The Stockton Delta Humane Society & SPCA has been serving the San Joaquin County and surrounding communities since 1966. We are a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit charity that operates strictly on public donations, supported by people and businesses who care about the welfare of animals. The Delta Humane Society & SPCA is a true no-kill animal shelter. We provide shelter, medical care and adoption services to abandoned, lost and misplaced pets. Each animal that comes into our shelter is given vaccinations and placed under surveillance until it is determined that the animal is ready to go home with a loving new owner. Every animal has been spayed or neutered and microchipped before adoption.

Ways to
Women’s Wellness BY CAITLIN HAMER
Wellness is an ongoing journey. Sometimes we may feel like we’ve gone off course, and it can be intimidating to try and get back on the right path. But all it really takes is just a few steps in the right direction! Since wellness encompasses everything from emotional well-being to physical health, there’s a lot to cover. But we’ve compiled a handy list of tips—some big, some small—that can lead to significant changes!

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018
MAINTAIN PROPER EYE HEALTH WHILE YOU WORK.
If you stare at a computer screen all day, try to look away from your computer every 20 minutes, for at least 20 seconds, at an object 20 feet away. You can also adjust your screen brightness to reduce eye strain.
DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF.
If you let the little worries pile up, eventually they’ll weigh you down. Stay calm and save your energy!
ESTABLISH A SKIN CARE REGIMEN.
It’s important to find a skincare routine that suits you and your specific skin type. Find a skincare specialist at your favorite beauty supply store to provide advice, or seek out a dermatologist if you have more serious concerns. Just remember to always cleanse and moisturize. And don’t forget to slather the SPF on your beautiful face!
STAY HYDRATED.
Health authorities have been recommending the 8 x 8 rule for years—eight 8oz glasses of water a day. Of course, the amount of water you actually need each day will vary from person to person—but it’s a good rule of thumb to have a reusable water bottle on hand whenever you’re out and about. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

GET ENOUGH SLEEP. Sometimes it
feels like this one may be easier said than done! But a lack of adequate sleep can lead to serious health problems. Make a sleep schedule and stick to it, and try to cut out anything that might negatively affect your ability to get proper shut-eye. Adults aged 18 to 64 require seven-nine hours a night, while adults 65 and older require seven to eight.
NEVER BE EMBARRASSED TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR QUESTIONS. Play an
active part in your health, and make sure you always know what’s going on! If something doesn’t feel right, bring it up. And if you don’t understand something, never be afraid to ask for more information or clarification.
PRACTICE HEALTHY HOBBIES. A 2015 study
found that participants who engaged in hobbies during their downtime were happier, less bored, less stressed, and had lower heart rates. Not sure what you want to do? Gardening, knitting, cooking, music, writing, and dancing are all fun and popular hobbies. Try a few and see what you like – you might discover hidden skills!
www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
GO OUT WITH YOUR FRIENDS ONCE A MONTH.
Adults with a strong social support network are at lower risk for many diseases, including depression and high blood pressure. So, take the time to nurture your friendships by keeping in touch and finding activities that you all love!
EAT CLEAN.
By cutting back on the amount of processed foods you consume, you’ll get to focus on adding fresher and healthier options to your daily meals. It’s as simple as starting with more fruits and veggies! Say goodbye to harmful preservatives and unnecessary ingredients and start reaping the benefits of more vitamins and nutrients.
EXERCISE THREE TIMES A WEEK (OR MORE).
Experts recommend exercising no less than three times a week, as this amount of physical activity can lower your risk of depression, heart disease, excessive weight gain, some cancers, and type 2 diabetes. As always, it’s important to consult your doctor before beginning any new exercise, especially if you have health problems.
LIMIT YOUR SCREEN TIME.
Staring at your phone for too long causes eye strain, is bad for your posture, and can negatively affect your ability to sleep. Then there’s the impact it has on social skills, as well as your memory and even your self-esteem. Start by designating a “no phone zone” and leave your device out of sight for at least an hour.
PARTAKE IN REGULAR BREAST EXAMINATIONS.
The American Cancer Society recommends that women at average risk for breast cancer start screenings at age 40, while women at high-risk begin at age 30. This will typically involve a mammogram, and in some cases, MRI scans. In addition to professional screenings, the National Breast Cancer Foundation recommends that adult women should perform self-exams at least once a month, so that they become familiar with their breasts and are able to recognize and report anything unusual.
TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF.
Find a moment of quiet in your busy day and make it a rule to carve out just 10 minutes for yourself to clear your mind. It’s your break, so do what feels good! You can practice simple breathing techniques, meditate, or reflect on personal gratitude.
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SJMAG.COM
73
READ REGULARLY.
KNOW YOUR FAMILY HISTORY OF CANCER. While
Reading stimulates the mind and lowers stress! If you’re struggling to find the motivation to read, consider joining a book club.
you can’t change your genetics, knowing this information and sharing it with your doctor can make a big difference. You might also consider genetic testing to see if you have certain cancer-causing genes. This knowledge can help you and your doctors decide which cancer screenings you need, and when.
WEAR SUPPORTIVE SHOES. Your feet are
literally carrying you from place to place, so treat them well! Improper support can lead to knee and back pain in addition to foot problems. So, make sure to invest in high-quality shoes that give your feet the love they deserve.
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.
You know your body better than anyone else, so if something doesn’t feel right, do something about it. If that means slowing down when you’re tired, or going to a doctor about an issue that you feel could be serious, do it.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018
TAKE A REAL LUNCH BREAK.
Eat in the office breakroom, go out to a restaurant, or find a nice spot outdoors— just don’t eat at your desk! You already spend enough time there as it is.
STAND UP FROM YOUR DESK MORE OFTEN. We’ve all heard
about the dangers of sitting for too long, and they’re 100% real. Sedentary lifestyles lead to higher risks for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and more. Stand up and stretch, or walk to your colleague’s office instead of emailing them. Five to ten minutes of activity per hour is an ideal start.
PRACTICE GRATITUDE.
Studies show that people who actively remind themselves how thankful they are tend to be happier. It can be as simple as thinking about what you’re grateful for every day, or taking the time to jot down those thoughts of gratitude in a journal. Don’t forget to tell the people in your life how much you appreciate them!
MEDITATE.
WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD. Feeling good
never goes out of style! And it’s no secret that when you look good, you feel better. Try to wear breathable fabrics to keep sweating to a minimum, and buy clothes that are neither too small nor too baggy.
PUT PLANTS IN YOUR HOME AND WORK SPACE. Indoor
plants reduce carbon dioxide levels, increase humidity, and reduce pollutants and dust levels. Studies show that greenery can also reduce stress and create a feeling of well-being, while stimulating and energizing.
CUT BACK YOUR CAFFEINE INTAKE.
WASH YOUR HANDS. It’s the
best way to protect yourself from getting sick, especially in cold and flu season, and the best way to prevent spreading germs.
www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
If you have frequent headaches (especially before your first cup of coffee), often feel jittery, and aren’t getting a good night’s sleep, it’s time to look at your caffeine consumption. If you find you’re dependent on coffee, try blending in some decaf, and then gradually reduce the number of cups you have each week. Consider trying coffee alternates, like tea, and cut out unhealthy afternoon soft drinks.
It can seem daunting at first, but there are many science-based benefits of meditation. And the best part? You can meditate anywhere, no equipment needed! Start with a few minutes a day, and watch your stress and anxiety diminish.
QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR PETS. If you’ve got
a furry member of the family, take time to give them plenty of love. If you don’t have a pet, but have been thinking about getting one, consider adopting from your local animal shelter. Having a pet can decrease stress, lower your blood pressure, improve your mood, and promote outdoor activity.
MAINTAIN GOOD POSTURE. Bad pos-
ture can adversely change your spine, give you digestive trouble, cause pain, and also negatively impact your lungs and heart. Stretch to lengthen and strengthen your muscles, and train yourself to sit—and walk—properly. And stop hunching over to stare at your phone! Sadly, this is a real medical condition called ‘Text Neck’ (Google it).

LEARN SOMETHING NEW. With libraries, CLEAN OUT YOUR CLUTTER.
We’re not saying you have to adopt a minimalist lifestyle, but cleaning out the unnecessary junk from both your home and your workspace can make a huge difference in your productivity levels and your peace of mind. If some of that clutter includes books or other items that could be someone else’s ‘treasure’, make sure to donate them!

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018
the internet, and unlimited apps available, you’re sure to find assistance in whatever you set out to study! It’s never too late to learn something new. And cultivating and pursuing different interests and hobbies brings a certain kind of wealth and excitement to life.
START YOUR DAY WITH POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS.
From the start, tell yourself you’re going to have a good day. And most importantly—believe it. It might feel silly at first, but with time you’ll find that replacing negative thoughts with positive ones really can have an impact on your mood and your day. Just start with “I am” and then finish with what you need to hear!
DON’T SKIP BREAKFAST.
You don’t want to end up hungry, angry, and tired mid-morning, right? If you’re short on time in the AM, consider prepping a healthy and delicious breakfast or smoothie the night before.
ALWAYS WEAR SUNSCREEN. JOIN A FITNESS CLASS. Partici-
pating in a class is a great way to add some social activity to your life. Plus, signing up and paying for a class means you’re less likely to skip your workouts!
Sunscreen lowers your risk of skin cancer, which is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. It can also prevent premature aging of the skin, and will result in a more even skin tone, as sun damage can cause discoloration and dark spots.
ASK FOR HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT. No matter the circumstance, it is not a sign of weakness to ask for help. Tell your pride to step aside!
HAVE A GOOD LAUGH.
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM INSECT BITES. MAKE ESSENTIAL OILS A PART OF YOUR LIFE. Whether
you want a soothing effect like lavender, or a midday perk-up with some peppermint, there’s bound to be an oil to match your mood (or, desired mood). Diffuse in your home or office to soothe the soul and lift the spirits! Essential oils also come in handy when fighting off colds, bacteria, and viruses. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
Insect bites are more than just itchy and unsightly— they can also be the first step toward contracting a deadly illness. Mosquitoes can carry West Nile Virus, and ticks can carry Lyme Disease. Know when and where you’re most likely to be bit, cover yourself up when you’re outside, and don plenty of insect repellant.
Laughter relaxes your whole body, boosts the immune system, releases endorphins, and increases blood flow! Indulge in funny books, movies, and TV shows often.
YOUR BRAIN IS A MUSCLE—USE IT!
Completing crossword puzzles, learning a new language, and playing chess are just a few examples of fun ways to keep your mind sharp at any age.
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SJMAG.COM
77
CREATE A SOOTHING BEDTIME ROUTINE. Relax your
body, and let it signal your mind that it’s time to fall asleep. Avoid screens for at least 30 minutes before bedtime (phone, laptop, or TV), and make your bedroom is a cool, quiet, and dark sanctuary.
DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
Heavy drinking can cause a multitude of health problems, so it’s important to monitor your alcohol intake. Women should have no more than one drink a day, but if you end up overindulging on a night out, just make sure you have a ride home, and remember to drink plenty of water! Also, make sure to know when not to drink, such as when you’re pregnant, or on certain medications and common antibiotics.
GO OUTSIDE.
Just 60 seconds of sunshine on your face is enough to improve your mood and energy levels. Plus, it’ll amp up your vitamin D intake! Try taking a walk on your lunch break (or eat outside!), or consider exercising outdoors. Vitamin D deficiency can cause a host of issues including re-occurring sickness, fatigue, bone and back pain, depression, hair loss, and more. 78

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018
TREAT YOURSELF TO SOME SELF-CARE.
A massage, facial, or mani-pedi are perfect plans for days when you’re in need of some pampering. But, even something as simple as staying in bed for a little longer on the weekends can do wonders! Find what’s most valuable to you and your psyche when you invest in self-love.
GET REGULAR PAP TESTS.
Guidelines on Pap smears have changed in recent years, with experts recommending that women ages 21 – 29 who are at average risk for cervical cancer get a Pap smear every three years. From ages 30 – 65, the preferred way to screen is with a Pap combined with an HPV test every five years. However, you should still see your OB/GYN annually, whether or not you’re due for a Pap.
MAKE YOUR HOME YOUR OWN. A home
renovation, whether it’s the whole house or just one space, can be a wonderful means of self-expression. The project will be rewarding, and you’ll be reaping the benefits for years.
DON’T COMPARE YOUR PACE WITH ANYONE ELSE’S.
You are on your own journey, just as everyone is on theirs. Life is not a competition, so celebrate who you are, and where you are!
SET REALISTIC GOALS. Start by
writing your goals out and then breaking them down into manageable time frames. Getting into these details will help solidify your goals, meaning you’re more likely to stay committed to them, and achieve success in whatever you’ve set out to do!
QUIT SMOKING.
We all know the dangers of smoking cigarettes. Withdrawal can be difficult, but the rewards are lifelong.
REDUCE YOUR PLASTIC USE.
Each year, about 8.8 million tons of plastic trash flows into the ocean: endangering wildlife, polluting the water, and even putting humans at risk. You can do your part to stop this by recycling carefully, and ditching disposable plastic items such as bags, utensils, straws, and water bottles. There are plenty of reusable options available! Opt. for a quality water bottle like a Hydro Flask—it keeps liquids cool for 24 hours, or hot for 12, and seriously reduces your carbon footprint.
DO SOMETHING NICE FOR SOMEONE ELSE. It’s amazing how one kind gesture can turn someone’s whole day around! Bring flowers to a friend for no reason, pay for the coffee of the person behind you in line, or leave a generous tip at a restaurant.
MAKE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AS IMPORTANT AS YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH.
One in five adults in the U.S. experience mental illness once a year. If you or a loved one are suffering, take the time to address what’s going on with a mental health professional, and remember to be honest. It’s time to destigmatize mental illness—after all, mental and physical health are closely connected. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

FOCUS OF
YOUR FACE
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION
BY CAITLIN HAMER
We communicate with our eyes, but aging can alter what they’re saying. If you’ve been wondering what your options are, Dr. Kimberly Cockerham and Dr. Ethan Tittler with Central Valley Eye Medical Group are here to help. With their artistic design and attention to detail, these expert board certified surgeons can provide a natural looking restoration to your eyes—the focus of your face.
Q.
I’m 25 years old, but the bags and dark circles under my eyes make me look tired all the time. What are my options?
A.
Some people develop early changes due to fat migration, and leaking veins that stain the tissues. Your best option is surgical repositioning of your fat, and ablation of your leaking veins. The downtime is approximately a week of bruising and swelling.
Q. I’m 35 and my eyelids and
eyebrows are drooping – it makes me look mad! What can I do?
A.
There are several methods
surgical elevation of the eyebrows, and removal of excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids. The downtime is approximately a week of bruising, swelling, and visible sutures.
Q.
I’m 45 and I have tearing and irritation from my allergies, which makes my eyes look old! What can I do? A. Allergies are extremely common in the Central Valley, causing our eyes to itch, swell, tear, and become red. First, minimize your eye sensitivities with eye drops, intranasal sprays, and by wearing an eye mask at night. Laser resurfacing may be an option to stimulate collagen formation. brisk walk in which it is hard to hold a conversation. “Health professionals recommend 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, but if they want to, they can work on increasing to rigorous activity such as jogging and muscle training for 75 minutes a week,” explains Dr. Basra.
INCREASE ACTIVITY GRADUALLY
“Women who have been diagnosed with a heart condition should focus on building up their stamina,” says Dr. Basra. “Studies show that women who do regular, moderate exercise have 30 to 40 percent less risk of cardiac disease.” As you increase your physical activity, consider using devices such as a Fitbit or Apple Watch, which will monitor your activity, heart rate, and general progress.
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Exercise is one of the best preventative measures you can take to protect yourself against a myriad of cardiac diseases. But, what if you already have been diagnosed with a heart condition? Is it safe to exercise? Dr. Manreet Basra, MD, of Pacific Heart & Vascular says, of course. “Exercise is always beneficial,” she explains. A cardiologist at Pacific Heart and Vascular which is affiliated with Dameron Hospital, Dr. Basra sees firsthand the positive effects exercise has on her patients. “It improves regular heart contraction and pumping ability and provides electrical stability to the heart. It also increases the heart’s pumping function, providing more blood flow to the rest of the body.” However, if you have a heart condition, your initial approach to exercise should be slow and steady. Below are some tips Dr. Basra recommends for getting back into your exercise routine post-diagnosis.

GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO RECOVER
If you’ve suffered a heart attack, don’t jump into an exercise regimen right away, no matter how light. “Ten to 14 days after a heart attack is when people are most ready to start gentle activity again,” says Dr. Basra. “One can start by walking around the house or yard three to four minutes at a time, taking breaks as needed.” After you’ve become comfortable with this level of exercise, Dr. Basra recommends gradually increasing your walking time until you can do so continuously at a normal speed for 30-45 minutes.
AT LEAST 150 MINUTES OF MODERATE EXERCISE PER WEEK
If your heart condition allows you to do such gentle activity as walking without strain, consider moving on to a more moderate regimen, often described as a
When exercising with a heart condition, it’s crucial that you take note of any chest pain or unusual shortness of breath. If such symptoms do occur, take a break and consult your doctor if you have any health concerns. If you don’t already have a heart condition, Dr. Basra says don’t ignore the warning signs. “Most of the female patients that I come across ignore their symptoms for a long period of time before seeking attention,” says Dr. Basra. “Shortness of breath and chest pain while exercising should not be ignored.”

MODERN MOMMY MAKEOVER
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION
BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER
Throughout our adult lives, most women try their best to maintain a good skin care routine, engage in the best hair rituals and indulge in the occasional massage, facial, or spa day. These things not only make us look beautiful, but feel beautiful as well. Once we start a family, however, it’s not unusual for moms to let self-care take a backseat. “Every mother knows that when you have a baby and are trying to balance time, you put yourself last,” says Dr. Ruby Gill MD, full-time

mom and physician at Gill Medical Group and The Gill Aesthetic Institute. “But, having a baby can cause drastic changes to the body, both physically and emotionally. It’s okay to want to take care of yourself.” At her primary care practice, Gill Medical Group, Dr. Gill takes a modern, well-rounded approach to medicine, focusing on the patient’s lifestyle as well as their ailments. Time and time again, she has seen that when patients look good, they tend to feel good, too. “It’s a two-way conversation

that happens in the office,” says Dr. Gill. “We’re treating a patient, not a number.” Enter The Gill Aesthetic Institute, where prospective patients looking for nonsurgical cosmetic procedures can book a consultation and meet face to face with Dr. Gill, where she will work to fully understand the patient’s concerns and offer customized aesthetic treatment plans. “Our goal is always a natural look and outcome,” says Dr. Gill. “In a typical mommy makeover, there is usually surgery involved, from which you would need downtime to recuperate. But we know most moms don’t have the time, so our procedures are always minimally invasive.” With the most technologically advanced equipment in the valley, the Gill Aesthetic Institute offers everything from facials and facelifts for dull and loose skin such as the Vampire Facelift, Vampire Facial, and HydraFacial, to lymphatic drainage modalities for swollen legs and feet that often afflict new mothers. “We are looking at everything—hormones, skin, hair, vaginal health with diVa and O-Shot, C-section scars, etc., and most moms tend to have the same
concerns,” explains Dr. Gill. The services offered at The Gill Aesthetic Institute are diverse and effective. With pregnancy, the increase in estrogen often causes spider veins, for which Dr. Gill would recommend either sclerotherapy or laser and light therapy. For postpartum hair loss, Dr. Gill is specially trained in “Vampire Hair Restoration,” the effective method of using Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to promote new hair growth. For C-section scars and stretch marks, lasers with PRP boost your body’s healing response. “We get wonderful, natural results,” says Dr. Gill. “For a youthful, rested, and natural looking mommy makeover, nonsurgical is the way to go.” And like anything worth maintaining, you won’t want to skimp on the upkeep. “You don’t just go to the dentist once—your skin is just like any other part of your body, it changes,” says Dr. Gill. “It’s something you’ll want to keep improving upon.”

Cancer
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION Knowledge is power. The first step to getting proper treatment for gynecological cancers is understanding your diagnosis. “Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic malignancy,” explains Dr. P. Gill, OBGYN at Gill Obstetrics & Gynecology Medical Group, Inc. “With an estimated 37,000 new cases last year in United States, it is the fourth most common malignancy among women. Seventy-five percent of cases occur in the postmenopausal years.” Ovarian cancer is less common than endometrial cancer, but is often a more serious diagnosis. “More women die of ovarian cancer than all other forms of gynecological cancers combined,” Dr. Gill says. “Unlike endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer is often not detected until it has already spread to other parts of the body.” If you receive an endometrial cancer diagnosis rest assured that most women with this type of cancer undergo a hysterectomy, removal of ovaries and of lymph nodes, and in most cases if the cancer has not spread, no other treatment is needed.
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
“Most women with endometrial cancer will be cured if they receive appropriate treatment,” she says. However, if the cancer has spread, additional radiation treatment may be needed. Like endometrial cancer, surgery is almost always the first step for treatment of ovarian cancer, as well. “For most women this will include a hysterectomy with removal of ovaries, lymph nodes, and omentum (a pad of fat cells that covers the stomach and intestines),” Dr. Gill says. Some early ovarian cancers require only surgery for treatment but the majority of women will need chemotherapy based on the type and extent of spread of the ovarian cancer.” Sometimes the statistics help put a patient’s mind at ease, others may find them counterproductive. “Early ovarian cancer without spread at the time of diagnosis can be ‘cured’ in up to 95 percent of women. Unfortunately 70 percent of ovarian cancers are detected after spread has occurred. For these women, treatment has 80 percent chance of
remission.” When the disease is advanced relapse is common from months to years after treatment, and while these instances are treatable, there is no cure for relapsed ovarian cancer. If you experience irregular bleeding or have concerns about your gynecological health, see your doctor. The physicians at Gill Obstetrics & Gynecology Medical Group, Inc. are committed to providing the highest quality of care for patients with more than 60 years of experience. SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Fair or not, most women work full time and take on the majority of household responsibilities, and this lifestyle opens women up to high levels of stress. Between work, school, home responsibilities and family chores, being overwhelmed sometimes feels par for the course. Mental health is important, and there are ways to combat stresses caused by everyday life with a little care and attention. Carolyn Snyder, a Mental Health Matters/ ELD Instructor and English Department Chairperson at Health Careers Academy sees first hand the effects stress has on female students. “Women need a consistent plan of exercise, self-care, sleep, and meditation,” Carolyn says. “Once a season “me-cations” don’t match up with consistent careful attention to your overall health.” So how can we find peace in the everyday? Laughter, exercise, and sleep are the main ingredients for a healthy mental lifestyle. Laughter–It is widely believed that laughter helps us balance out the negative mood caused by stressors. Laughter is “the best medicine” because it releases endorphins in our brains triggering our opioid response system. Research has found deep connections between laughter and lower levels of stress, including that laughing with others spreads positive benefits throughout the group. Laughter can also boost the immune system, and when we are physically healthy it’s easier to be mentally healthy, as well.
92
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018
Exercise–Exercise has both short and long term stress relief benefits. “On the short term, any form of exercise relieves stress by releasing endorphins,” Carolyn says. “If the exercise is rhythmic such as swimming or running, it can also help create a meditative state thus also relieving stress. Those who suffer from clinical anxiety benefit even more. As a rule of thumb, engage in aerobic exercise for 20 minutes each day. Long-term results should show after about 10 weeks. Sleep – The cycle of positive sleep and low stress can be a complicated one. Because stress impacts how you sleep and lack of sleep impacts stress, it can quickly become a vicious cycle. “Adults who sleep more than eight hours a night report feeling more patient with their children and partner, feeling less overwhelmed, feel more motivated and feel overall less irritable,” Carolyn says. There’s science to back up the claims, too. When we sleep, the brain flushes itself of cellular waste much like your circulatory system does for the rest of your body.

GIVING Birth BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Let’s talk about perinatal depression—because, let’s face it, no one really does. Different from postpartum depression or the “baby blues,” perinatal depression refers to depression during pregnancy, childbirth, and the months after delivery. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, perinatal depression occurs in 12 to 20 percent of all pregnancies. “We know that women who have a previous history of depression can have increased chances of having an episode of depression during pregnancy or after delivery,” says Amanjot Deol, MD, the chief of Behavioral Health at Kaiser Permanente Central Valley Area. “But even if there is no past history, due to the stressors of pregnancy, childbirth, and the hormonal, physical, and emotional changes associated with the perinatal period, any woman can develop these symptoms.” Detecting perinatal depression is extremely important as its presence can lead to premature delivery, decreased maternal-child interactions, child behavior problems, and in extreme cases, even suicide or infanticide. Being pregnant, giving birth, and caring for a newborn is a huge responsibility, and it’s often a stressful time for women. Proper care and treatment is readily available, but it doesn’t work if no one steps up. If a women feels low during or after pregnancy she needs to seek help from a doctor, and if you notice a friend struggling after childbirth, reach out. The symptoms often look physical—changes in sleep and energy, trouble concentrating, and physical pain. Doctors can provide treatment and support that will help her have a successful pregnancy, delivery, and attachment to her child. Because perinatal depression has become so pronounced, Kaiser Permanente offers a screening. Studies found that 15 percent of women screened suffered from perinatal depression, but 82 percent of those sufferers found improvement in just six months after delivering, thanks to treatment and referrals

Eat well and exercise within reason, and always see a doctor if you feel you are suffering. Sometimes just taking steps to ease your fears about motherhood can help. “Many women feel there are preconceived notions that pregnancy and motherhood should always be a happy time, but in fact, it is very challenging,” Dr.
Deol says. “Not every woman will feel the same way during this time and that is perfectly normal.”

REDUCE Your CANCER RISKS
2018
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION
BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER These days, it seems like everything causes cancer—an observation that isn’t far from the truth. According to the National Cancer Institute, the number of new cancer cases per year is expected to rise to 23.6 million by 2030. Such scary numbers beg the question: What steps can be taken to minimize your risk? “There are likely multiple reasons for the rise in cancer rates, with an aging population being the most likely,” says Dr. Dan Vongtama, MD, Radiation Oncologist at St. Teresa Comprehensive Cancer Center. “It’s interesting because it’s partly good news: Because of all the advances in modern day medicine, we’re living longer, which puts us more at risk.” A second reason? Obesity. “Being overweight is clearly linked to a risk of cancer,” says Dr. Vongtama. “We don’t fully understand why yet, but it could be related to the fact that, when one is obese, the immune system is impaired and there is chronic inflammation.” An increase in hormones due to excess fatty tissues also contributes to the risk. While we can’t stop ourselves from aging, managing your weight is a reasonable step you can take in reducing your risk of cancer. With a healthy diet and controlled weight, your hormone levels will be better regulated. Add at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity (meaning a brisk walk in which it would be hard to hold a conversation) to your weekly routine, and you’ll decrease your risk of several different types of cancers, including the most common type, breast cancer. “There’s also a link between breast cancer and alcohol intake,” says Dr. Vongtama. “To avoid increasing your risk, the recommen-

dation is no more than one alcoholic drink per day.” Yet another carcinogenic is on the rise, even more prevalent than alcohol—are you sitting down? “We know that the amount of time spent sitting is related to some types of cancer, such as colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer, and lung cancer,” explains Dr. Vongtama. “It doesn’t seem to be reversed by increasing your physical activity, either.” That’s right: an hour and a half of exercise after work won’t reverse the damage done by sitting in a chair for eight hours (looking at you, nine-tofivers). That’s why it’s recommended that you periodically get up and stretch, take short walks, or even stand at your desk while you work. To make a long story short, Dr. Vongtama says: Stop smoking. Cut back on drinking. Be active. Increase whole grains, decrease red and processed meat consumption. Always wear sun protection. And, to protect against a myriad of cancers, look after your sexual health with regular pap smears and get vaccinated against cancer-causing viruses HPV and Hepatitis B. While there is no guarantee that taking any one precaution can protect you against cancer, you can minimize your risk of cancer by incorporating a variety of healthy habits into your lifestyle. Talk to your doctor about any health concerns you may have, and most importantly, don’t let the fear of cancer keep you from living your best life!

MAINTAIN
HEART HEALTH THROUGH EXERCISE BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Many women exercise to lose weight, but exercise is good for more than outer appearance; exercise is beneficial to the whole body. “Exercise is a magical elixir; it helps prevent diabetes, heart attack, and depression, and it slows down aging,” says Dr. Ramin Manshadi of Manshadi Heart Institute in Stockton and President elect for California Chapter of American College of Cardiology. “Our genetic makeup has been made to move and not to live sedentary.”
98
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018
If you aren’t an avid exerciser already, Dr. Manshadi recommends starting a routine with weekly doses of cardio to jumpstart, or maintain, heart health. Any athlete over the age of 35 should get a pre-participation screening before diving in to an intense exercise regimen. If an athlete has an underlying heart condition or if they abuse energy drinks, they could be at increased risk for heart attack even under the age of 35. So how do you start exercising without putting your body in harms way? “Moderation is the key in exercise,” Dr. Manshadi says. Don’t overdo it, and always take a new exercise slow. Muscles need to build and that will take time. Once you’ve been doing the same movements for several weeks or even months, muscle memory kicks in. Your body needs time to adjust, but once it’s warmed up, you can trust it to thrive under the new routine. “Three miles a day for at least five days a week and getting your heart rate to at least 85 percent of your predicted maximum heart rate is optimum for heart health,” Dr. Manshadi says. If you’re obese, exercise becomes even more important. While everyone should exercise regularly, those who are significantly overweight are at greater risk for heart attack, even if lipids, sugars, and blood pressure all test normal. So while exercise isn’t only for weight loss, it’s certainly an important component for those who are carrying around more than a few extra pounds. If you’ve ever desired to turn back the clock and regain the health you enjoyed in years past, exercise is the way to do it. Wrinkle creams and plastic surgery may help women look younger, but exercise makes the body more youthful. “People that exercise regularly can biologically slow aging quite significantly,” Dr. Manshadi says.

EDGE BREAST
CANCER CARE
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION
BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER
So, you think you found a lump. You’re worried at best, terrified at worst, and have no idea where to go from here. To shed some light, we consulted the professionals to get the basics of how to proceed in the event of a possible breast cancer diagnosis.
MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN.
…And do it quickly. Early detection is key, and your physician will be able to evaluate what steps need to be taken. “An appropriate evaluation of the breast will include an x-ray evaluation and a thorough breast examination,” says Dr. Dean Sloan, MD. A general surgeon at Sutter Gould in Stockton for 12 years, Dr. Sloan’s patients have access to cutting-edge technology, such as Sutter Gould’s 3D Mammography, which can give an even more accurate visual of any possible anomalies in especially dense breast tissue.
IF THERE IS A MASS, PREPARE FOR SURGERY.
“After the results of all these tests are available, if a suspicious mass is found, a recommendation may be made for an X-ray guided core biopsy of that mass,” says Dr. Sloan. The most common method for locating nonpalpable breast tumors is wire localization—inserting a wire into the breast on the day of surgery. It has high re-excision rates and causes discomfort for many women. Dr. Sloan uses a new technology called Savi SCOUT, which instead utilizes a reflector that allows the surgeon to see exactly where the mass is, so it can accurately be excised. Dr. Sloan says the technology eases women’s stress, improves operational efficiency, and reduces operating room costs.
DISCUSS TREATMENT OPTIONS.
After Pathology sends your results back, you will know if you have breast cancer. If you do, treatment plans will be discussed. 100

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018
It’s vital that you learn all you can about your type of cancer and are open with your doctor about any and every question you may have. Keep a notebook in which you can take notes and write down questions as they come.
SEEK SUPPORT.
“Sutter Gould provides patients with access to breast cancer support groups,” says Dr. Sloan. The people you meet in support groups can help you navigate the process and help you understand that you’re neither alone nor helpless to deal with these challenges. Enlisting a friend to attend appointments with you and take notes will also be helpful. “One of the most positive changes
that has occurred over the last 35 years is that the patient has become part of the overall team that discusses the treatment plan,” says Dr. Sloan. “It is no longer acceptable for a woman to go into surgery without knowing what will be done—her voice is heard, and her opinion is respected.”

GLAUCOMA
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION
BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER
According to the National Eye Institute, more than 2.7 million Americans over age 40 have glaucoma, a number that is estimated to increase by more than double by 2050. If you have recently been diagnosed with glaucoma, you should take comfort in knowing that you are certainly not alone. In addition, there are plenty of steps you can take in managing your condition so that you may continue living your life to the fullest.
COMMUNICATE:
It goes without saying that you need to see your eye doctor for regular checkups, and to tell them about any concerns you may have. In managing glaucoma, your eye doctor will be your biggest asset. “Glaucoma is said to be the silent thief of sight, so having your eye pressure checked annually is imperative to diagnosing glaucoma early before visual loss ensues,” says Dr. John H. Zeiter, ophthalmologist at Zeiter Eye Medical Group. Talk to your doctor about the specific type of glaucoma you have and learn all you can about your
condition. It’s also important to talk to your family about your condition so that they can not only assist in compliance with glaucoma treatment, but also be on alert for their own symptoms as glaucoma is a genetic condition. Ask a family member, caregiver or friend to be present at your appointments to have a second person assist you in remembering your treatment plan.
the number one cause of progression of glaucoma. Taking eyedrops as directed is imperative in preventing blindness for this disease.” Write down a list of your medications and how often you take them as well as important phone numbers in large print, including doctors, transportation, emergency contacts, etc. Put this list in a convenient spot.
GET ORGANIZED:
TREATMENT:
Taking prescription medication needs to be a part of your daily routine including applying eye drops at a certain time of day; for example, when you wake up in the morning, with a meal, and/or before you go to bed at night. Storing your medications next to your toothbrush can serve as a visual reminder. You can also set an alarm on your smart phone for a daily reminder. Dr. Richard Wong, glaucoma specialist at Zeiter Eye Medical Group, emphasizes that “lack of medical compliance is
Once diagnosed, compliance with your treatment plan is key in the management of glaucoma. To ensure that your glaucoma is not progressing, you will need to: • See your glaucoma specialist every four to six months • Consistently take prescribed medication(s) • Undergo annual testing as recommended by your ophthalmologist, i.e. visual field (VF) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) Ask your eye doctor about laser treatment for glaucoma or surgical options (micro invasive glaucoma surgery) that may assist in the control of glaucoma.
OTHER HELPFUL TIPS:
You’ll want to protect your eyes whenever you can. Wear goggles when swimming, protective eyewear when doing yard work, and sunglasses to help block out the glare. It’s also important that you take care of your whole body as well as your eyes. If you eat healthy and exercise, your overall health will contribute to healthy eyesight.

BUY A NEW ONE
Before you bring in the main attraction, take some time to show your space some love. Clean corners, baseboards, remove clutter, and play around with furniture placement— really create an altar-like space for your tree that will make all your hard and meticulous decorating work truly shine. Next step? Bring in new pieces! Maybe a recliner perfect for the uncle who loves to nap fireside? Thornton House Furniture in Lodi has just that. Or, maybe a bigger living room table perfect for snacks and drinks— check out Home Furniture Gallery’s selection.
8 INVEST IN A SECOND FRIDGE Really, though! How overwhelming is a bursting fridge holding your ingredients hostage? Or the lack of space that leaves you handing out all of your delicious leftovers? The solution is simple: Buy another fridge and set it up in the garage. Designate the ‘garage fridge’ for beer and bottles, or dishes from guests that require refrigeration while everyone waits for the turkey to be done (ugh).
But, seriously. If your home doesn’t work for you, don’t work for your home. It’s important and fulfilling to love the space you’re in, and everyone deserves a sacred space. Holidays often ignite growing families, and what better reason to begin researching a larger location. If the holidays have you facing the fact that you’re outgrowing your home, Stockton realtor Danielle Hardcastle of PMZ Real Estate is ready to help you navigate the tricky real estate market for an enjoyable, exciting experience.

GO ENERGY EFFICIENT

Live the luxury and romance of your favorite reality show (without the drama). Flashback to exactly one year ago: October 2017. For fans of the show, it may feel like we just concluded the tumultuous two-season adventure that was Becca Kufrin’s journey to love, but in reality, it’s been exactly one year since she found herself falling for race car driver Arie Luyendek Jr. in South Lake Tahoe. You don’t have to watch the franchise to know what Bachelor getaways consist of—lots of luxury, copious amounts of romance, and a probably unhealthy dose of drama. By embarking on a weekend away inspired by the over-the-top reality show’s lineup of dates you can enjoy all of the luxury and romance without the confrontation. Since October is the month Arie’s Lake Tahoe dates were filmed, we’re revisiting the scenic escape now. It’s the perfect opportunity for visitors to enjoy the same seasonal activities with the same gorgeous backdrops, recreating the romantic escape ABC producers searched out. Slip away to South Lake and hit all the highlights—a horseback ride through the forest, parasailing on the lake, and waterfront dining.

Where to Stay
Stay in the same hotel the Bachelor himself called home base during your television-worthy trip to the Nevada city of Stateline. The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino was prominently featured. In fact, the episode ramped up tourism to the area and the Hard Rock specifically when guests realized they could stay in the same suite Arie stayed in while filming on location. Entertain guests in the two-room space, or cozy up in the in-room Jacuzzi tub during your stay. HardRockCasinoLakeTahoe.com If you prefer a vacation rental, check out the digs the girls stayed at while Arie entertained at the Hard Rock. The Fjeldheim overlooks 22 miles of pristine lake, back-dropped by the snow-capped mountains. Spend your evenings soaking in the outdoor hot tub with views of Lake Tahoe, or easing sore muscles in the subterranean sauna. TahoeMountainHome.com Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe

Date One
One of the most recreated dates from this episode involves parasailing in Zephyr Cove. The ride is surprisingly easy if you can get over the fact you’re soaring through the air attached to a 1,000-foot long rope being tugged along by a Parasail boat. It is, however, also romantic. Book a tandem ride through ZephyrCove for the true Bachelor experience, and choose from a variety of time slots. Before 10 AM you’ll enjoy a bit of a discount, but remember the afternoon may bring warmer weather in fall. ZephyrCove.com For the full experience, finish your date clinking glasses of champagne on the beach. The Zephyr Cove Restaurant, referred to by locals as simply The Lodge will have some on hand to pair with lunch. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

Next stop, regroup and redress in your room before heading to the Park Prime Steakhouse for dinner, one of two fine dining establishments inside the Hard Rock Hotel. The atmosphere is a creative mix of longhorn paintings and modern décor, amplified by the electric blue lights that speak to the Hard Rock brand. Order plates of premium seafood or dine on prime beef provided by Harris Farms while sipping wine—of course. Your last stop of the night will be Vinyl: an intimate showroom steps from the restaurant that features a variety of entertainment options. Catch live music, comedic events, or other late-night activities here. Through the end of the year, the location’s Center Bar will have live DJs on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 PM-2 AM spinning tunes. If you’re feeling nostalgic play some LANCO back in your suite after-hours.

Date Two
Hopefully, you’ll be enjoying the great outdoors of Tahoe with just one significant other instead of 12. Either way, pull inspiration from the week’s group date for an outdoorsy time. No promises Bear Grylls will show up to teach you survival tips like he did on the show—in fact, we can all but guarantee he won’t—but you can hike through the towering pines outside of Kirkwood a la the bachelorettes. If you’re lucky, you may even enjoy a dusting of snow—and hopefully not dumping— while you walk hand in hand. Tucked in the middle of thousands of acres sits a destination unlike any other. The Hideout at Kirkwood is made of hand-peeled logs gathered from the property, and towering granite-topped mountains allow the outdoor hot tub to feel secluded in the wilderness. This huge swimming hole has room for plenty—or just two. Getting a spot, however, can prove difficult. The venue is almost exclusively used for weddings, but it can be rented for large parties, as well. That’s okay though—we’ve got you covered. HideOutKirkwood. com If you’re not ending up at The Hideout then where you hike is really up to you. Many trails begin to close throughout October so keep an eye on closure information and weather conditions on trails while you take advantage of views only Tahoe can offer. Make it a Party You may remember the 17-bedroom, 18-bath mansion where the guests gathered for their Lake Tahoe rose ceremony. The Powder House Lodge is available for rent through Tahoe South Vacation Rentals with plenty of dates open for October and November. Located on 15 acres with ski-in, ski-out access, the Heavenly Ski property costs a pretty penny, but when you split it amongst 38 people (the maximum number the property sleeps), it’s not that bad. Revel in panoramic views on two outdoor decks, escape to the guesthouse for a little privacy, and enjoy the outdoor amenities including a BBQ, hot tub
and fireplace with views of the slopes. Luxury is evident throughout with beamed ceilings wrapped in reclaimed barn wood, a chef’s kitchen with enough seating for the whole crew, a separate butler’s kitchen perfect for a catered meal, a private movie theater that seats 25, and a downstairs game room bursting with activities such as foosball, pool, shuffleboard, and ping pong. WATERFRONT GRILLE BRINGS
HIGH CLASS CUISINE TO TOWER PARK RESORT www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER It’s been a beautiful day on the Delta channel. The sun has begun to make its descent toward the horizon, and the tummies that occupy your watercraft are rumbling. While burgers and chicken fingers are Delta staples, tonight, you’re craving something with a little more…class. That’s where Waterfront Grill comes in. Situated on the edge of Tower Park Resort where levee meets lapping water, the restaurant opened its doors in just May of this year, and already it’s made quite the impression on boaters and residents alike.

“This is a whole new concept for the Delta; it’s not your typical Delta-fare,” says Flora Jackson, General Manager at the Waterfront Grille. “People who have been coming to this resort for years tell us that our menu is unique for the area.” Not that anyone’s complaining. Just one look at some of the dishes that come careening out of the kitchen at the Waterfront, and you, too, will be struck by the impression that you’ve stumbled upon something special. “We have an incredible menu, and nothing predone. Everything is freshly prepared,” says Flora. Captain

music; an experience made all the richer by the finest waterfront view around. “Our Happy Hour also offers foods like chicken wings, sliders, garlic fries for the bar,” adds Flora. “It’s important to us that we accommodate our customers while still serving our high-quality food.” So, whether you’re out on the water hunting for a fresh menu to explore, or a landbound local looking for some elegant eats, the Waterfront
at the helm of a catering business for four years, it’s safe to say Flora knows a thing or two about quality cuisine. Take their popular appetizer, the Ahi Tuna Watermelon Ceviche: Ripe pink watermelon cubes intermingle with the freshest Ahi Tuna, adorned with the contrasting green onions and accented by ginger, lime, chamoy, and olive oil, making this dish both delectable and pictureperfect. Not only is it a crowd favorite, but it’s one of Flora’s favorites, too. “We take a lot of pride in our presentation,” she explains. “If that means it takes us a little more time to get the food out, that’s okay—I want customers to experience both the quality and the beauty of our dishes.” And beautiful they are, inside and out. While their fish is undoubtedly excellent, their steaks are of the finest quality, too. The Hangar Steak, poised amidst a bed of fingerling potatoes and drizzled with flavorful chimichurri, holds a

particular place in the hearts of both patrons of the Waterfront Grille and the Chef himself. “It’s a beautiful cut of meat,” says Chef Hascher. “It’s not very common because not every butcher butchers that way, but it’s the most flavorful, tender cut on the cow. It’s just perfect.” Then there are the entrees that take aesthetic qualities of waterfront dining to new heights, like the Bacon Wrapped Jumbo Shrimp. Resting on a soft, savory bed of mushroom risotto, baconwrapped jumbo shrimp take center stage, frosted with an avocado relish and juxtaposed by a backdrop of watermelon radishes. And what’s a good dinner without a good drink? Sip on specialty cocktails such as the Watermelon Margarita, Strawberry Blond, or a Delta Breeze while you’re having dinner on the Waterfront Grille’s picturesque deck, enjoying the latter drink’s namesake as it tousles your hair. ALL IN THE FAMILY WITH R-N-R VINEYARDS AND WINERY BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Growing up in the wine business had a serious impact on Matthew, 27, and Colton, 24, Machado. Their parents, Russell and Rhonda, are best known for providing local wineries with 16 varietals of grapes grown over 1600 acres throughout the Lodi AVA. The experience of growing up in the industry—riding tractors and picking grapes—set the men on a trajectory to expand the family brand with a wine label to call their own. While the patriarch and matriarch (and the namesakes) of the business never ventured into wine making, their two sons took on the challenge in 2016, starting a R-N-R Vineyard label with vintage releases of Teroldego, Zinfandel and Riesling. Equipped with a life full of memories working as farmers and grape growers and educations in economics from top California schools, the two brothers bring a fresh face to the Lodi wine scene. “We decided we needed to showcase the quality of wine grapes we grow here in Lodi in a tangible way,” Matthew says of the adventure. Summer sippers showed a fast appreciation for the label’s 2017 Riesling, a crisp, acidic wine with the notes of pear, and apple on the nose. Heading into fall, however, vino-lovers should sample the recently released 2016 Teroldego, a sin-

gle-vineyard varietal that hails from the Clements Hill sub-appellation of the Lodi AVA—no blending required. There’s no tasting room to visit yet, but local Lodi businesses pour several of R-N-R Vineyard’s creations (see sidebar). Despite the Machado brothers’ deep roots in Lodi—the pair is third generation local farmers—they pride themselves on adopting modern farming practices that favor sustainability. Perhaps what sets them apart most, however, is their age. Matthew and Colton think differently than many of the region’s other wine makers. “Our goal with our brand is to not be tied down to common varietals or blends and think outside the box to bring consumers something they weren’t exactly expecting from wines out of Lodi,” Matthew says. “Our youth can hopefully further convey this outlook.”

WHAT DO YOU MOST ADMIRE IN THE WORLD OF LODI WINE, AND WHY?
All the hard working local growers, who grow premium wine grapes and are often overlooked. Coming from a farming family with over 100 years of tradition and experience, we know it’s a thankless job. Quality wines begin in the vineyard! -Scott
HOW’D YOU GET STARTED?
In 2010, my brother Tom and I, decided to get into commercial wine making at Estate Crush. Since we produce and sell 1600-1800 tons of grapes annually, we thought “why not crush some grapes for a family label”. For guidance, we hired Matt Ridge to be our wine consultant and Jon Wetmore to be our vineyard manager. -Leslie
WHAT’S YOUR WINEMAKING STYLE? We select our best, most interesting grapes from the vineyards and carefully choose the appropriate barreling and aging pro cess. And practice patience in the process! - Tom
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE WINE YOU’VE MADE?
I have three favorites: 2017 Sauvignon Blanc, 2015 Chardonnay, and 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon—all vintages sustainably grown and certified by Lodi Rules. -Leslie

theKNIFE: BEHIND CHEF MARTIN HUTTON BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER
Chef Martin Hutton is everything you would expect from a classically trained transplant from London: A dry sense of humor, a meticulous approach to running the back of the house, and a well-known reputation as a culinary guru. Those who approach him not only notice his stature, but his humble and grateful attitude. He’s pumped to be cooking in Lodi Wine Country. Since taking the helm as Executive Chef at Woodbridge Inn four months ago, Chef Hutton has certainly shaken things up. He has made clever adjustments to the restaurant’s traditional dishes with the addition of quality ingredients and flavors that pack a punch. With new specials like the chicken liver paté or poached halibut with short ribs, Martin’s flavors are bold and inventive. His culinary style can best be described as globally eclectic—taking learned culinary techniques and blending them with local regional products. “One of our upcoming specials is Halibut with a Chile Lime Thai smoked short rib on a bed of ratatouille, all wrapped up in a beurre blanc wine sauce,” Martin exclaims. “I utilize Thai, American, and French flavors to pull the dish into one plate of deliciousness.” With a love for international flavors, it’s no

surprise that Chef Hutton hails from London. His classical training shines through in his dishes. With degrees in both the culinary arts and hospitality, his expertise sent him travelling the world to places like Phuket, Thailand and eventually, brought him to America. He first got his start at the Holiday Inn Marble Lodge in London, which just happens to be a steakhouse. “My arrival at Woodbridge Inn has really brought my career full circle,” says Martin. If you are familiar with Woodbridge Inn’s menu, Chef Hutton suggests you try his updated version of the tuna stack. “I revamped the tuna stack with three distinctly different layers of flavor,” Martin suggests. “It’s SO good!” And if you aren’t a huge fan of meat, the veggie burger is a monstrous patty of quinoa, corn, and a bushel of other fresh goodness piled high on an everything bagel. He smothers it in fig jam and stacks it with pickleS, onion, lettuce,
and heirloom tomatoes. It’s seriously everything. When Martin explains to me how grateful he is for the trust that owners Andy and Tammy De Lemos have put in him to bring the finest quality ingredients to the restaurant, you can tell this chef is humbled. He looks forward to fostering new partnerships with local farmers to showcase what he calls the growing belt of California.
Meat-loving foodies should check back this winter when Chef Hutton plans to add a meatloaf to the menu. Why head to a steakhouse for a meatloaf? Because this is not your mother’s meatloaf—it will be a true nose to tail creation with beef cheek and all of the beefy goodness! So, be sure to plan your next date night at the Woodbridge Inn! WEST OAK NOSH NEW-SCHOOL, GERMAN-INSPIRED CUISINE HARKENS BACK TO LODI OF OLD BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER Glittering string lights, humble chalk walls, and an open-air concept that encourages community interaction—the design of Lodi’s West Oak Nosh emulates a modern age of restaurant, seen much more often in the Bay Area or Sacramento than our own San Joaquin. But, despite Nosh’s modern décor, inspiration for its cuisine has local, historical significance. In the early 1900s, a small population of Germans from Russia immigrated to America on the promise of free land and fertile soil to farm. While they initially settled in South Dakota, most eventually migrated to the friendlier climate of Lodi, where they successfully established farms, businesses, and of course, cuisine. “Our initial inspiration for opening a German restaurant here was Lodi’s history as a German town,” explains Marcus DeAnda, General Manager and Co-Owner of West Oak Nosh. “Over time, places where you could get this kind of food completely disappeared.” To fill the gap, he and his brother Gabriel, with whom Marcus co-owns the restaurant, decided to bring back traditional German dishes—done just a little differently. Take their Pork Schnitzel Sandwich: West Oak Nosh adds a modern twist to this quintessentially German dish, foregoing the traditional veal for pork, piling it high with
crunchy slaw and pickled onions, and sandwiching it all between a chipotle aioli-slathered pretzel knot bun. Almost everything on the menu is made in-house, from the houseground brisket of their Nosh Burger, to the beer cheese for their soft pretzel. This, along with their unique homage to German cuisine, brings in more loyal customers every day. “My favorite part about working here is seeing the new people come in, especially when there’s some hesitation,” laughs Marcus. “Then, once they experience our food, they give it all their praises. It’s awesome.” But, it would be a cardinal sin to offer German food without craft beer—so you can bet West 144

Oak Nosh is fully stocked. “We offer over 40 beers, everything from local brews to beer from Weihenstephaner, Germany’s oldest brewery,” says Marcus. The restaurant also boasts a full bar where they serve craft cocktails. While the family-friendly atmosphere draws in many, it’s the delectable bites that create a real community at West Oak Nosh. “It’s a different cuisine that Lodi was missing,” says Marcus. “There’s a lot of care, thought, and time that’s put into each dish, making each one special.” EXPERIENCE THE NOSH: WEST OAK NOSH 10 W. SQUASH IT UP
ORIGINAL RECIPES BY THE FINE FOODIE PHILANTHROPIST BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER There is no doubt that fall is upon us. The sights and sounds of the season are screaming to slow down and savor the bounty of fall and all it has to offer. I love fall. I love the way the leaves turn colors of burnt orange and flaming crimson as they fall from the trees. I love the aroma of pumpkin spice as it permeates the air. I love the sound of football on the television, the sight of farmers harvesting wine grapes and the gathering of friends and family to celebrate the season. But for me, almost every season brings back memories of family gathered in the kitchen and the aromas that filled our home. Every fall brought with it the roasting of squash in all its glory. My mother would roast acorn squash with butter and cinnamon as a savory and 146

sweet addition to our roast chicken dinner. It was a sharp contrast to the summertime tomato salads enjoyed just over a month ago, but one that I always welcomed. Through the years, our family recipes evolved and improved, but the memories of the simple, roasted squash stick with me to this day. Squash is a healthy alternative to the starch-heavy holiday, as it’s packed with potassium, antioxidants, and is low in calories. It’s also a great source of magnesium, vitamin A and C, and is high in fiber. I can’t think of a single reason NOT to jump on the squash bandwagon! At home, I often enjoy squash stuffed, roasted or made into a tasty soup. It’s also an easy substitute for pasta or potatoes! I can’t even begin to decide which squash is my favorite—butternut, acorn or spaghetti? Maybe one of these recipes will help you decide!
SQUASH & PROSCIUTTO BASIL BITES INGREDIENTS 1 Medium Butternut Squash, sliced into ¾ inch rings 2 6 oz. Packages of Prosciutto ½ C. Basil for Garnish ¼ C. Olive Oil 2 TBSP. Calivirgin Balsamic Vinegar DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Wash basil leaves and prepare to chiffonade. Stack a bunch of basil, roll them into a cigar and then use a sharp knife to slice the basil into thin ribbons. Slice the butternut squash into ¾ inch rings and then slice in half to create half-circles. Brush the squash with olive oil and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Then, wrap each piece of squash with a half slice of prosciutto. Arrange on a platter and garnish with basil and balsamic vinegar.

FALL HARVEST SALAD INGREDIENTS 1 - 10 oz. Bag of Baby Spinach and Arugula 1 Butternut Squash, Sliced into ¾ inch circles ¼ C. Roasted Pumpkin Seeds 1 Package Dried Cherries 1 - 4 oz. Goat Cheese, Crumbled 2 TBSP. Maple Syrup 4 TBSP. Red Wine Vinegar 2 TSP. Dijon Mustard 1/3 C. Olive Oil, plus more for brushing squash Salt/Pepper to Taste DIRECTIONS To make the dressing, add the red wine vinegar, maple syrup, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper to a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Shake vigorously. Add olive oil and shake again. Can be made ahead of time. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut butternut squash into ¾ inch slices and brush with olive oil. Bake for 30 minutes on a foil-lined sheet. Meanwhile, add spinach and arugula mixture to a large serving platter. Remove the squash from the oven and let cool. Layer the squash, pumpkin seeds, dried cherries, and goat cheese. Drizzle with the maple syrup vinaigrette and enjoy!
