editor's note
We research, we explored and we discovered. Our topic was one of interest to most; the perfect accompaniment a steak dinner, an Italian lunch, or a night on the patio. It comes in many shades and flavors, textures and taste, and everyone has their favorite. Welcome to our staff’s favorite issue. Every September, we get to enjoy the evolution and growth of San Joaquin’s grape growing and winemaking community. Although we sometimes find ourselves rushing the “breathing process” after opening our a bottle, any wine lover appreciates their towns wine culture. Our county is packed full of award-winning wine’s, vineyards, wine clubs and amazing restaurants that serve these tastes. As we take you through “Battle of the Vines” we’ll talk about the charms of Lodi, and the growing Foothills. Take a step out for a perfect day-venture in the Foothills of the Sierra. As the home of the Zinfandel, the Foothills offer deep and flavorful red wines. Enjoy a glass while you take in the beautiful views of the rolling hills populated with California oaks and pines. As we guide you through 10 wines of Lodi prepare your taste buds for some of our favorite local wines. Once you find that perfect bottle, look to our Haute Items for some great accessories sure to spice up any wine and cheese party in your future. Getting hungry? Tantalize your taste buds with farm fresh grapes, explore additional uses that populates our land. From chicken skewers to grape salsa, the fresh availability of this product is
“I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food.” W.C. Fields, circa 1930
yet another perk of living in San Joaquin. Fall into autumn with the newest looks of the season. These fashions are found readily in our community, and are calling your name. We would like to thank Jorja Lerner of Harney Lane Winery for her help during our photo shoot to make us feel right at home as we utilized the winery as our beautiful backdrop to fashion. To us, the sound of September is a peaceful breeze and the noise of a school bus in the distance. As the temperature changes and we near the holiday seasons, we smile before the storm starts again! Take time to enjoy the calm of September, and your new found freedom. Relax on your recliner and enjoy this issue of San Joaquin Magazine. Soon, we will be shopping for halloween costumes, and finishing off our own personal bags of candy right before the trick or treaters arrive.
Cheers to wine,

THUYTIEN NGUYEN LOCAL FASHION BY MICHELE BIRD
Fashion and creativity are two things local fashion designer Thuytien Nguyen knows all about. Originally growing up in Vietnam, Nguyen had a background in clothing design from the start as she would go into the city with her aunt to pick out unique fabrics. From there, Nguyen would hire a local seamstress who would take her measurements and produce a one-ofa-kind outfit with the fabrics. “We would always hand sew our clothes if they were ripped and (we) hardly threw anything away,” said Nguyen. In 1993, Nguyen moved to the U.S. at the age of 15. She is now based in Stockton and sparked an interest in fashion during her time at San Joaquin Delta College. “I was an undecided major at the time, but I started to really like shopping for clothes and putting outfits together,” said Nguyen. She would shop at the Garment District in Los Angeles and at trade shows such as Magic in Las Vegas. “This is when I began to hunger for my own shop,” Nguyen explained. In the summer of 2009, Nguyen enrolled in Introduction to Fashion and Fashion History as she pursed her AA in Apparel Design and AS in Fashion Merchandising at SJDC. Nguyen noted that she “was hooked from there.” One of Nguyen’s biggest inspirations is her mother. “I am inspired by mom for taking care of her children, mostly by herself,” said Nguyen. “She was a strong woman who was always working.” She also finds inspiration from traveling to new places and visiting museums to check out various art and fashion exhibits. “I attended the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit in San Francisco and was so inspired by the quality – the clothes were impeccably made,” said Nguyen. “The designers, patternmakers, beaders, and sewers spent thousands of hours making these amazing clothes.” When it comes to creating her own collection,

Nguyen is known to pay close attention to detail in her pieces by using a variety of feathers and lasercut leathers. “I’m visually inspired and create things out of beautiful, interesting materials or items that I find,” said Nguyen. “I am notorious for pulling scraps or fabrics others students leave in the trash and using them in garments or to make interesting things like flower pins (and) decorations.” In Nguyen’s fall 2013 collection, she drew inspiration from a trip she took to New York. “I was inspired by the city, the sophistication of the people there, and the ambiance,” said Nguyen. During her trip, she shopped for fabric and trim describing her experience as being a kid in a candy store. “There was so much to choose from and I wanted it all,” Nguyen explained. “In the fabric stores, I began to visualize the collection, touching the fabrics, and seeing unique materials that I can’t find here.” Some words Nguyen uses to describe her fall collection are edgy and contemporary. “This fall collection is about quality, choice of materials, and the way in which they are combined,” said Nguyen. “For me, each garment has to be interesting and stand alone as a unique piece.” Nguyen noted that she geared to have a “higher end collection” for fall 2013. “I wanted it to have a wow factor, but in a subdued way,” said Nguyen. “The clothes aren’t loud. The wow is in the details.”
Some challenges Nguyen tackles when creating a collection are late nights of patterning and sewing to make deadlines. Sometimes, she also travels great lengths to find the perfect fabric for a piece. “Making your own collections involves finding something to inspire you and developing those inspirations into designs,” said Nguyen. “Despite the challenges involved, I truly love all aspects of creating a collection.” Outside of fashion, Nguyen spends her free time watching movies and documentaries about nature and new technologies. She also encourages aspiring fashion designers to take advantage of internship opportunities as a way to learn new skills and build a resume. “Work hard and do not be afraid to try new things because everything you do is another learning experience,” said Nguyen. “Good or bad, learn from it and move onto your next challenge.” In the future, Nguyen hopes to open up her own design studio locally. “I love the design side of fashion because I truly love being able to create something and I love the process of creating,” said Nguyen. “Seeing the end result is very rewarding.”

Community and philanthropy are two words that embody the Assistance League of Stockton. The organization was formed in 1919 by Anne Banning in Southern California. Since then, more than 120 chapters have formed as part of the National Assistance League. Initially, Stockton’s chapter began as a guild in 1968 with programs such as senior safety and dental hygiene for children. In November 1973, Stockton became home to the 55th chapter of the National Assistance League after meeting the required 50 members to receive full charter. Assistance League of Stockton serves the local community with six philanthropic programs. Operation School Bell provides children in kindergarten through third grade with a new set of clothes after they are referred by their counselor for the program. Students that are served come from Stockton Unified School District, Lincoln Unified School District, and Migrant Education. Items included in the package are socks, underwear, pants, polo shirts, a sweatshirt, jacket, grooming kit, and $15 gift card to Payless Shoes. There are also interactive programs such as Kids on the Block, a puppet show series on the topics of divorce, bullies, and tolerance. Book Buddies Literacy Program is where volunteers from the chapter listen to children read out loud to help improve the child’s skills. Typically every volunteer listens to a total of five to six children a week for a period of 10 – 15 minutes at elementary schools located in Stockton. “I like to help my community,” said Robin DeCoite, 2013 – 2014 president of Assistance League of Stockton. “The best part is connecting with people in the community and the friendships women develop by being members.” Care packages are supplied to children moving into foster care and assault victims as part of Kids’ Komfort
Kits and Assault Survivor Kits. Items included vary from toys, books, grooming kits, clothing, and flip flops. Operation Rescue provides local community members with $25 vouchers to use at the Assistance League Thrift Shop. The vouchers are given to clients from various charities or educational outlets to help cover the cost of work clothing or basic essentials for their families. According to DeCoite, there are an average of 12 – 20 recipients every month. The thrift shop is located in Stockton and features a staff of volunteers. Funds help support the various programs that the Assistance League of Stockton is involved with. Donations of clothing for kids and adults, books, furniture, and toys are accepted in-store. Currently, there are 110 members working with the Stockton chapter. New volunteers are always welcome. “People should join to make a difference,” explained Decoite. “It really makes an impact in what they can do for the community. We are very family-oriented and community based.” Assistance League of Stockton will be celebrating its 40th anniversary on October 12. The celebration is set to take place at Stockton’s Waterfront Plaza featuring a silent auction, raffle baskets, live music, and more. Tickets are $45 and guests must reserve their spot by September 30. For more information on the Assistance League of Stockton or how to volunteer, please call (209) 466-8386 or visit assistanceleagueofstocktonca.org.

THE DRIVE FOR LODI PROHIBITION Photos courtesy of the Bank of Stockton
BY RACHAEL KANNER
By the turn of the century the antiliquor movement known as prohibition was gaining in popularity. National groups such as the Anti-Saloon League had gained enough public support to place real pressure on Congress for effective legislature. Outside of Washington, the question of being a dry or wet supporter became a leading political divide. This divide came to a head in Lodi during the election of April 14, 1914 over the issue of high licensing or raising the licensing fee of the saloons. While the vote took place on the 14th, the campaigning trail began in earnest several days prior during the April 4 school trustee election. The election was between John H. Davis and Otto Weiche and was a typically low key election until noon on the 4th. At that time hoards of dry supporters arrived at the polling station and made a spectacle of placing their vote for Davis. Wet supporters alarmed that Davis could be a dry candidate threw their support behind Weiche. The trustee election turned out to be a false alarm as neither candidate was interested in the saloons. Nevertheless, the wets showed their might as Weiche won the election 416 to 270, an unusually high amount of votes for the election of a school trustee at the time.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2013
After the false alarm, the campaigning for the April 14 election intensified as guest speakers on both sides swarmed to Lodi. Dry supporters received lectures from J. Stitt Wilson of Berkeley and Rev. A. C. Bane then president of the AntiSaloon League of Northern California. Wet supporters could hear Rev. E.J. Dennett of Stockton and read an open leader published by then president of the Grape Growers Association and a Lodi former mayor. By the 14th, both sides ensured all voters would participate and employed 25 automobiles each in order to transport the voters to the polling station. As the polls closed the results favored the drys who won with the slight majority of 655 to 648. In a stroke of diplomacy the wets requested to postpone the high license until the results of the upcoming fall State election due to business concerns. The drys agreed perhaps as this election contained an amendment for statewide prohibition. On November 4, 1914 the amendment was defeated with the help of an overwhelming majority from all four precincts of Lodi. The prohibitionist were not to be deterred although California including Lodi stayed wet in 1914, by 1920 with the passing of the 18th Amendment all of America was dry.

Battle BY KELLY SODERLUND
Northern California’s wine regions have long been overshadowed by their proximity to the venerated Napa Valley and Sonoma County, and while those famous vineyards are still packed with wine-appreciating visitors, other regions such as San Joaquin Valley and the Sierra Foothills have emerged from the shadows and stolen some of the North Coast Region’s spotlight. Located right here in our own backyard, both Lodi and the Foothills are now ideal destination spots for local wine connoisseurs and amateur tasters alike.
50
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2013
The Lodi Appellation is home to nearly 80 wineries and produces some 600,000 tons of wine grapes each year - more than Napa and Sonoma combined, producing nearly half of California’s Zinfandel varietal. Up the hill and to the East, the Foothills have also become a popular place to visit as the number of wineries in the region has more than doubled in the last ten years to over 150 in total. From small, family operations to large entities, the wineries here are doing a booming business and their wines have achieved national and international acclaim.
Interested in a trekking close to home or taking a short drive, but not sure in which direction to go or how to navigate once you get there? Both regions are known for their Zinfandel, boast family-owned and operated farms, and have won countless awards from the San Francisco Chronicle’s prestigious Wine Competition. So while reaching a decision may seem like it would require a Herculean effort, keep reading, as San Joaquin Magazine’s Battle of the Vines pits these burgeoning locales in an all-out head-to-head— and is pleasantly surprised when it’s time to present the gold medal.

Lodi The Backstory
Located a mere 30 minutes from Sacramento, the region’s very first Zinfandel vines were planted in the 1880s, and now the fertile region of Lodi is home to more than 50 varieties of grape. Some of those first Zin plantings still survive thanks mostly to the 1970’s boom in white Zinfandel (Yeah, yeah. We know). Recently, many Lodi farming families, such as Harney Lane, have expanded their enterprises from growing grapes for neighboring wine regions to enter into the actual winemaking for themselves. “Harney Lane has been in our family for 5 generations”, says Jorja Lerner. “While our family has farmed wine grapes on the property for over 100 years, it wasn’t until 2006 that we started making our own wines.” Lerner adds, “I feel that our region is unique in that we have such rich farming heritage, and that carries over into the wineries. Multi-generational farming families own a large percentage of local wineries which offers unique opportunities to showcase our own Lodi fruit. It also offers the opportunity for visitors to learn more about agriculture and wine grape growing, and it contributes to the very relaxed and approachable atmosphere that Lodi exudes.”
Setting the Scene
The Lodi Appellation has a classic Mediterranean climate featuring warm days and cool evenings. Situated directly east of the San Francisco Bay at the edge of the Sacramento River Delta, cool “delta breezes” provide a reliable natural air conditioning throughout the growing season. This climate allows Lodi growers to consistently produce delicious full-flavored wines that contain a refreshing natural acidity. The bulk of Lodi’s wineries are concentrated along a grid of scenic country roads. Notes Jim Ladd of Lucas Winery, “There are tasting-rooms in the downtown area, but visiting the wineries is the only way to meet the people responsible for making the bottle you enjoy most. And what wine isn’t better when there is a great adventure story to accompany it?” Indeed, Credence Clearwater may have changed their tune if they were “stuck in Lodi” these days.
52
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2013
Main Attraction It may come as a surprise to some wine connoisseurs, but Robert Mondavi (widely credited as the man who put California wine on the map with his Napa Valley-produced wine) actually grew up here. In fact, in 1979, 13 years after the establishment of the Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa, he built the Mondavi Woodbridge Winery in Lodi, developing it into a leader of popular-premium wines. But regardless of Mondavi’s celebrity, the real star of the show here is undoubtedly its Zinfandel: Lodi produces nearly half of California’s big, juicy red Zin.
In fact, The Wall Street Journal named Van Ruiten Vineyards Zinfindel the “Best Zin in America” in 2009. Agrees Ladd, “If it is a great Zinfandel you are after, then Lodi is the place to start. But there are incredibly diverse varietals grown and produced here.” And while Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay command most of the acreage, there are a total of over 60 varieties in commercial production to keep tasters on their proverbial toes.
Foothills The Backstory
One of the best day-escapes is above the valley floor and into The Foothills of the Sierra. The wineries have been here since the Gold Rush; first thriving in the Shenandoah Valley near Plymouth in Amador County, located some forty-five minutes east of Sacramento. Along with their picks and shovels, the immigrants seeking their fortune also brought grapevines to the Sierra Foothills in the mid-1800s. Once planted, many of the vineyards in this region operated non-stop, even during the Prohibition years. In fact, Amador County is reported to be the only county in the United States to expand vineyard acreage during Prohibition, with the grapes sold to home winemakers. Amador, and the surrounding counties that include Calaveras, El Dorado, Mariposa, Nevada, Placer, and Tuolumne, is part of a region comprising six AVAs totaling 2,600,000 acres in all. Today, the region is treasured for its small, distinctive vineyards and wineries, beautiful scenery, quiet gold rush towns, fresh mountain air, and intense grapes that produce wines with magnificent flavor profiles: the liquid gold of the Sierra Foothills.
Setting the Scene
The Foothill vineyards, located between 1,500 and 3,000 feet, are planted in well-drained, rich soils. In fact, if you ask a Foothill winemaker what gives the areas wines their unusual, robust taste, they’ll tell you “it’s the soil.” Most of the vineyards at the 2000-foot elevation are set in a soil made of decomposed granite, a product of erosion from the Sierra Nevada range. A climate of warm, sun-drenched days followed by cool, crisp nights yield grapes of remarkable intensity.
Sideshows Besides Harney Lane, Lucas Winery and Van Ruiten Winery, your trip doesn’t have to stop there. While it may be tempting to spend your time exclusively touring the area wineries, be sure to check out Lodi’s fabulous Wine and Roses, which also hosts the Lodi Wine & Visitor Center. The Lodi Wine & Visitors Center . Visitors stopping by the Lodi Wine & Visitors Center may procure a free touring map, learn about the Lodi Appellation and sip local wines at the tasting bar. Don’t forget to download the Free Lodi Wine app. Additionally, Wine & Roses features 79 rooms and suites, Towne House Restaurant

and a spa, making it the perfect place to stay on an overnight trip to Lodi’s wine country. Be forewarned, however, if you’re looking for a driver-- Lodi only has one taxi service in town. The Wine and Visitor Center can provide visitors with a list of limo and shuttle services though. Visit lodiwine.com to find information on other local activities, such as Lockeford Springs Golf Course, Lodi Lake Park, Micke Grove Park & Micke Grove Zoo, beautiful downtown School Street and the World of Wonders Science Museum.

Robert Farmer, in an article for WineCountry.com, describes the scenery of the Foothills as “a mélange of rolling hillside whitefenced farms, wooded foothills and mountainous backdrop.” At Placerville’s Miraflores Winery, in El Dorado County, the majority of the property is left alone to maintain the natural beauty of pine trees, native California oaks and wildflowers. Animal-friendly systems have even been created so as not to disturb the natural habitat.
Main Attraction The wines that really stand out here are the deep, flavorful red wines. Zinfandel originated here, and most of the wineries make a super tasty “big” type of Zin, such as Fair Play’s Perry Creek Winery’s ZINMAN, which was rated among the top 15 best-value Zinfandels by Wine Spectator in 2010. Likewise with Syrah and, increasingly, Petite Syrah. Italian and Rhone varietals and blends are bottled here as well, and have achieved acclaim in the states as well as in Europe and Asia. While in Amador County the Old-Vine Zin still reigns king, the Sierra Foothills as a whole also produces a plethora of distinctive wines, including some amazing, awardwinning whites, so don’t limit yourself exclusively to the Shenandoah Valley. And while the 2.6 million acres of terrain may seem overwhelming, it actually reduces any anxiety about seeing it all on one day or weekend. Instead, pick an area and limit your trip according to the wineries in that singular location. For example, big-name estates such as Madrona, Boeger, and Lava Cap in addition to the afore-mentioned Miraflores and Perry Creek wineries, as well as Petra Winery and Charles B. Mitchell Winery, are all located within our own El Dorado County border (which boasts over 60 wineries in all). PHOTO: HAO TSENG LUCIFER'S GAZE

AND THE
Winner
IS…
DRUMROLL, PLEASE… (Sideshows don’t get winners. They’re sideshows after all, and this is a piece on wine)
Best Backstory
Lodi. While the Sierra Nevada Foothills has a rich and storied history, rife with 49ers and Wild West folklore, Lodi has overcome a world-famously pessimistic CCR tune to emerge as a destination location for both Zinfandel and boutique wines.
Best Scenery
The Foothills. The rolling hills, abundant foliage, and numerous bodies of water make the Sierra Nevada’s the clear-cut winner. To be fair, Lodi’s 551,000 acres is almost five times smaller than the Sierra Foothills, which might make the comparison slightly tougher. But I’m just following the parameters of the category.
Best Main Attraction
Sideshows
If you’re thinking of making it an overnighter, trying staying in one of the many historic Victorian hotels or Bed & Breakfasts that populate the Gold Country to make the experience all that more authentic, such as Fair Play’s Barkley Historic Homestead. In Amador, wander around Sutter Creek or explore the Black Chasm Caverns in the town of Volcano. In El Dorado County, be sure to swing by Apple Hill, consisting of 50 ranches and includes fruit growers, bake shops, wineries, a micro-brewery, a spa and Christmas tree growers. And if you’re looking for a driver, Folsom Limo offers wine tour packages to Amador and El Dorado counties (they offer them to Lodi and Napa, too).

Tie. Both locations offer world-class old-vine Zin, Zin in general; full-bodied reds, distinct whites, and both offer them from unpretentious, mostly family-owned estates. Perhaps the best way to decide on a day-trip to one of the two areas depends on familiarity and convenience. And if you haven’t been to either location in a while, now is the perfect time to rediscover the wineries of Lodi and the Foothills. Hurry, before they completely take over the California wine stage.

The Lodi winemaking industry has enjoyed tremendous expansion in the last decade. The land devoted to vineyards has increased from 46,000 acres in 1996 to nearly 100,000 today. Now the region produces more fine wine than Napa and Sonoma combined! The Lodi appellation is proudly blowing away the mists of anonymity that have shrouded local wines, allowing them to bask in the sunshine of worldwide recognition. We invite you to take a short ride and discover Lodi Wine Country for yourself.

Home to 2013’s “Best Zinfandel in the State of California,” Macchia prides themselves on making the best wine for the best price. Specializing in Zinfandels and Italians, the well balanced, big and bold flavors that fill their bottles are often awardwinning. Owners Tim and Lani Holdener passionately submerge themselves in every aspect of their business. As Tim creates each wine, Lani develops a perfect environment for each sip. Embodying their Italian name, Macchia, (“the spot”) their winery and wine club mirrors the bold and beautiful characteristics of their product. “My husband is just great at what he does,” smiles Lani. And others agree. Macchia’s wine cellar is basically a trophy case. Tim’s wines of 2011 including the Petite Sirah, “Rebellious,” Zinfandel, “Mischievous,” and Zinfandel, “Ambitious” all received Gold “Best of Class” at the California State Fair. Bringing home the Double Gold, yet again, was their 2011 Zinfandel, “Adventurous” which received Double Gold, Best of California, “Best of Class.” And, it doesn’t stop there. Macchia’s 2009 Port was crowned a Double Gold “Best of Show” at the El Dorado City Fair. Their winery is full of many other “Double Golds” and “Best of Class” including the 2011 Sangiovese, “Amorous” and Serious Old Vine Wine. In addition to this impressive list, Macchia’s italian varietals have gained international recognition, and

LUCAS WINERY Heather Pyle Lucas and David Lucas met while they were both employed by the Robert Mondavi family. Like most great winemakers, Heather started as a “cellar rat” after earning her Masters in winemaking at U.C. Davis, and progressed within the company as her winemaking skills, crafting well balanced food friendly wines, became apparent. Eventually she became the winemaker for Mondavi’s prestigious Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, part of the Opus One team, and the prestigious La Famiglia label that made wines from California sourced Italian varietals. She truly believes that great wines start with great vineyards and is a consulting winemaker for wineries throughout California. David’s experience as the V.P. of Grower Relations with Mondavi and Heather’s winemaking experience with Mondavi have fostered the quest to produce wines that can be enjoyed alongside the world’s great wines without question and demonstrate the highest potential of the Lodi Appellation. David and Heather make wines in a traditional style that reflects hundreds of years of history. The use of 100% French Oak barrels is not compromised when producing wine, and the unique Grand Chai of The Lucas Winery reveals how important tradition is to The Lucas Winery’s vision. KLINKER BRICK WINERY STEVE & LORI FELTEN, OWNERS
Established in 2000, Klinker Brick Winery began as a home-office operation with Steve & Lori Felten at the helm. Before that and without any pre-conceived plans to open a winery, the Feltens realized that they could create and produce something special from the quality juice which they were, at the time, selling off to other reputable wineries. What began as an idea, materialized into a forty-four state distribution schedule as well as a delightfully rustic and rural tasting room 72
which was founded in 2010. Klinker Brick continues to produce high quality wines including a dry-style rosé, syrah, and their flagship zinfandel.

LODI WINE CELLARS THE STOKES FAMILY
Situated in the heart of California at the confluence of the Mokelumne and Consumnes Rivers, Benson Ferry celebrates a rich farming heritage. This family owned winery produces premium, budget friendly California varietals. Vineyard owners in Lodi for three generations, the Stokes family selects fruits from prime estate vineyards, for their delicious bottling.Stokes Family Vineyard represents a family tradition of great wine grapes three generations in the making. Bill Stokes, Sr. planted his first 45 acres of Zinfandel near Lodi in 1954. His son Tom increased the family acreage in vines from the 1960’s to the 1980’s. BY RANDY CAPAROSO
Exclusive to San Joaquin Magazine Lodi’s Delta influenced Mediterranean climate is neither too hot nor too cold; which is why this American Viticultural Area grows more variety of wine grapes than any other region in California (and the world, for that matter). Hence, the fascinating diversity of Lodi’s ten “most interesting” wines:
Randy Caparoso is the multi-award winning sommelier/ restaurateur and longtime wine journalist who also pens the blog for the Lodi Winegrape Commission’s lodiwine.com.
2010 Ripken Vineyards, Lodi Pinot Noir ($20) – It’s a myth that only fat, simple Pinot Noirs can be grown in the Delta. If anything, Ripken’s is almost lean, with a quiet sense of balance and restraint to its medium body, and bright, floral, tart edged varietal fruit suggesting raspberry, cranberry, blackcurrant liqueur, and mild, composted earth complexities.
2012 Sorelle Winery, Bella e Rose Rosato ($16) – A dry style rosé fashioned from estate grown Sangiovese and Barbera, underlined by a citrusy tartness that seems more European than Californian – like tight coils giving bounce and edginess to this pale pink wine’s wild cherryish, watermelony fruitiness. 74
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2013
2011 McCay Cellars, Lodi Carignane ($28) – This red wine shows why, 40 years ago, Carignan was California’s most widely planted wine grape: pure, appealing perfumes of cranberry and cherry, spiced with cinnamon and loamy earth undertones, fused in a fleshy body unimpeded by excess tannin or oak
2012 Borra Vineyards, Artist Series, Lodi White Wine ($18) – Borra is Lodi’s oldest bonded winery (since 1975), and its most innovative. This blend of Kerner (a rare German crossing) and Riesling (15%) grapes is a barely off-dry, lemony crisp, lacy white wine – light as a feather and effusively scented with suggestions of Pippin apple, orange peel, and rising bread dough.
2011 Onesta Wines, Bechthold Vineyard Lodi Cinsault ($28) – From vines
2010 Watts Winery, Los Robles Vineyard Lodi Montepulciano ($25)
planted in 1886 by Lodi pioneer Joseph Spenker, this red wine is soft as a baby’s skin, and as intoxicatingly wonderful to touch and smell, with its brimming strawberry and rhubarb-like fruit, accentuated by crackling black and brown spices.
– The Montepulciano grape makes bold, earthy wines in its native Italy; while in Lodi, the Watts family turns it into a zesty, medium-full bodied red, loaded with blackberry, cherry-like fruit, tinged with green and red peppercorns, a touch of cardamom as well as black olive.
2012 Acquiesce Winery, Lodi Belle Blanc ($24) - Owner/grower Sue Tipton sticks to a no-oak approach to her wines; a policy that pays off with this bracingly dry, tart, silky/steely blend of Grenache Blanc (60%), Roussanne (30%) and Viognier (10%), tinged with flowery (like lilacs), lavender and Herbes de Provence-like perfumes.
2010 Bokisch Vineyards, Lodi Tempranillo ($21) – 2010 is owner/grower Markus Bokisch’s tenth vintage working with this native Spanish grape – a round, springy, fleshy red wine, exuding perfumes of baking pies (cherry, blueberry, blackberry), and subtle notes of rare beef, cocoa and cigar box-like oak.
2011 Mettler Family Vineyards, Lodi Pinotage ($24) – There
is not much Pinotage grown anywhere in the world outside of South Africa, where this vinifera crossing was developed in 1925. Mettler’s Lodi grown rendition is full bodied yet amazingly bright and brambly, with aromatic suggestions of blueberry, baking marionberry, and fainter notes of dusty leather and wood smoked bacon.
Harney Lane Winery, Lodi Patriarch’s Promise ($40) – A non-vintaged red wine crafted in honor of founder George Mettler, who passed away this past spring. Like Mr. Mettler himself, Patriarch’s Promise is all about the thick skin it has historically taken to gut it out as a winegrower in Lodi, while maintaining impeccable dignity and balance: thick, chewy, concentrated yet perfectly smooth flavors of dried trail-mix berries, spiked with cinnamon, black pepper, and mysterious suggestions of fennel root and organic earth.

A number of times we’ve enjoyed fun yet relaxing getaways to the picturesque town of Sonoma. As home to Buena Vista Winery, the state’s oldest commercial winery and Gundlach Bundschu, the earliest family-run winery ever established in California, the town is considered California wine industry’s place of origin. And Sonoma has many other unique distinctive connections to our state’s early history that should pique a visitor’s interest.

Buena Vista, rather coincidentally, was the first winery we visited in wine country many years ago and as one of our all time favorite producers of chardonnays and pinot noirs it’s often our first stop for wine tastings when heading north. It is housed in a beautiful original building and historical tours are available. After many years of iffy ownership and declining reputation, a new owner has infused the necessary capital and enthusiasm to bring the estate and cellars even beyond its former elite status. buenavistawinery.com; Gundlach Bundschu is known for premium estate bottled wines and, much to our liking, the driest Gerwurztraminer we’ve ever tasted. A seasonal winemaking tour and cave tasting is a recommended option. gunbun.com; Gloria Ferrer, a sibling of Spain’s Frexinet, has possibly won more awards for their premier celebratory premier sparking wines than any other California vintner. gloriaferrer.com; and Sebastiani Winery, one of Sonoma’s most famous vintner’s since the early 1900’s has a stunning tasting complex and tour. sebastiani.com. Two other wonderful ways to
than any other town square in the state…maybe the country. Anyone into cars and racing will not want to miss attending an event at Sonoma Raceway, one of the most famous road-race tracks in the country featuring NASCAR, INDY CAR, S.C.C.A, N.H.R.A, motorcycle and antique car racing events. racesonoma. com. Ever wanted to learn to drive a race car? Well, one of the country’s finest high performance driving schools
is right here. You can take courses to race your own car, a formula three racer, a state of the art go-kart or a special Audi sports car. Very exciting stuff! audidrivingexperience. com. simraceway.com; If you bring your children, a visit to Sonoma Train Town, proclaiming to be the most welldeveloped quarter scale railroad in the Americas, is a nice attraction for families. And how many kids don’t like trains? traintown.com.
explore the wine tasting scene in Sonoma are to take the Sonoma Valley Wine Trolley or do the downtown wine walk where over 20 tasting rooms await. No driving worries are a major appeal of both these approaches. sonomavalleywinetrolley.com; For all the local wine tasting choices go to: sonomavalleywine.com. If wine tasting isn’t your thing, just strolling the eight acre downtown plaza, the largest town plaza in California with a beautiful historic County Courthouse, park-like setting and statue commemorating the infamous Bear Flag Revolt can fill an afternoon. Including stops at the Plaza’s surrounding trendy shops and popular restaurants is a must consideration. With four small but very colorful historic hotels still operating on the plaza, it seems that Sonoma has more of these small historic lodging properties on their plaza WWW.SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

INTERESTING SONOMA TRIVIA: In 1976, Napa Valley’s Calistoga winery Chateau Montelena shocked the world when they won best white wine in a prestigious French competition which resulted in world-wide recognition of the high quality of California wines and a major movie titled, Bottle Shock. As the first California wine to ever win such a competition, Napa received unprecedented publicity. An un-publicized fact: 80 % of the grapes for that wine came from the Sonoma area...not the Napa appellation. Sonoma is also one of the rare communities in the U.S. that has a loyal following of devotee players of the French game of Petanque. It’s played, almost daily, on a rather make-shift court setting right behind the Depot Museum. Although similar to England’s
lawn bowling or Italy’s Bocce Ball, it’s uniquely French and visiting newcomers are encouraged to join in by members of the Valley of the Moon Petanque Club. vompc.org. We found that the staff members at the hotels, restaurants and wineries provided a wonderful expression of the casual, friendly, hometown warmth that defines Sonoma.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2013
MacArthur Place Hotel and Spa, located within seven acres of lush gardens, is our hands down first choice for a special getaway when heading up to Sonoma. We consider this to be a five star property and apparently we’re not alone. Once again this past year it received recognition as one of the “World’s Best” U.S. hotels by the highly regarded Conde Nast Traveler’s annual Reader’s Choice poll. Originally a prominent three hundred acre vineyard and prestigious ranch this verdant 19th century estate has been transformed into this glorious upscale yet comfortable inn and spa. Each of the inn’s 64 suites and rooms are appointed with designer furnishings and suites feature fireplaces and either hydrotherapy tubs or rain showers. The original Manor House residence built in the 1850’s houses ten distinctly historic rooms, their beautiful Garden Spa offers forty different rejuvenating treatments and a nearby yearround heated pool and whirlpool are welcome respites after a day of activities. Saddles, their signature restaurant and award winning steakhouse, more than lived up to its’ reputation. Sitting on authentic western saddles in the lounge and bar are a genuine hoot! macarthurplace.com. The Sonoma Valley Inn, a Best Western Plus property is an excellent choice providing exceptional value rates, full buffet breakfasts and a location just a short walk to the plaza. sonomavalleyinn.com. Into B & B’s? The Inn at Sonoma will not disappoint. Although larger than most B & B’s this premier boutique style inn features fireplaces in all rooms, complimentary buffet breakfast, evening wine and hors d’ oeuvres. innatsonoma.com. The agricultural bounty of the area has resulted in a vibrant restaurant scene with dining choices ranging from casual cafes to five star choices and a full range of ethnic possibilities. Here are a few of our picks: The popular Red Grape restaurant serves the best thin crust pizza we’ve ever tasted. Normally we prefer the thick crust Chicago style but we look forward to a return engagement for their great food and exceptional service. theredgrape.com; The Girl and the Fig is probably the most well known and critically acclaimed dining spot in town and deservedly so. Their French inspired country cuisine has received countless rave reviews…and you can add ours to the list. thegirlandthefig.com. Mary’s Pizza Shack is practically a local legend and is as well known for their pastas and hamburgers as they are for their pizza. And don’t forget to try their sumptuous meatballs! maryspizzashack.com. If you are into gourmet cheeses there are two well known producers with tasting shops in town that deserve a visit. Sonoma Cheese Factory on the square has been around since 1931 and offers a variety of jack cheeses to die for, delicious deli sandwiches and the best barbeque in town. Tip: grab some cheese, a sandwich and other fixins’ and head across the street for a picnic on the Plaza. sonomacheesefactory.com. Just around the corner on Second Street is Vella Cheese Company, a producer of award winning cheeses for over 80 years by the Vella family, now in the fifth generation. Although not a place for lunch we thought the variety of cheeses were par excellence and reasonably priced. vellacheese.com.

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT
Niche regional restaurant excellence is something
that can be claimed by many establishments, but the level of service incorporated on the culture of Rosewood Bar & Grill has made it the preferred dining location in historic downtown Lodi. “The quality of our chefs and the immense server training required from our staff definitely gives us an advantage,” says Scott McLeod, general manager. “We want our service to maintain the excellence of our menu items. It is important because that is what guests experience before they even taste our food.” For the last dozen years, under the Rosewood name, a solid clientele has been established, from corporate dinners and events to social gatherings. A group of managing partners purchased the restaurant four years ago. The new ownership group requested a seasonal menu when they took over four years ago, with exciting entrees such as Caribbean Pasta, Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf and Summer Chicken Napoleon. To fit the unique menu that is presented by chef Iradh Herrera, the majority of produce is purchased within a 15-mile radius of the restaurant. Artichokes, tomatoes, sweet white corn, zucchini and squash are all featured heavily throughout the year. Rosewood maintains a systematic daily supervision of the produce inventory to ensure the freshest fruits and vegetables. “By establishing a seasonal menu it means that the customer knows they will never see the same items as they visit us throughout the year,” says McLeod. “That is an element to this restaurant that keeps people coming back. Customers can really tell a difference, and it 92
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2013
is always a immediate positive reaction.” The commitment in using local produce is also made behind the bar, not just on the plate. Rosewood’s cocktail menu has earned its own stellar reputation by focusing on innovation and variety. “All of our cocktails are made with fresh squeezed juices,” says McLeod. “We make our own sweet and sour mix, and our own grenadine. “ Rosewood Bar & Grill is spacious with a seating capacity of 100, including a private dining room for 30 people. Although the ambiance features a classic white table cloth setting, the restaurant purposely stays away from a ‘stuffy’ environment in preference to casual, fresh setting that matches the style of their ingredients. “The planning of our ingredients is always important because it is hard to get certain fresh ingredients once the summer nights get too hot,” says McLeod. “Our service is of the highest quality and we always want to make sure our food is, too.” A favorite menu item is grilled Chilean sea bass that features lemongrass, cilantro and garlic. It is served with roasted corn riscotto and lemon spinach. Along with the macadamia Alaskan Halibut that is served with spinach, smoked bacon, vegetables and Malibu pineapple sauce, they are two of the most popular seafood entrees. The Spanish Rock Salmon is special because it is raised the closest to wild salmon as possible. “Using these fresh meats and produce really goes a long way to solidify the reputation we have earned,”
says McLeod. “We take pride in the fact that we offer several high-quality seafood entrees with our own twist.” On the cocktail menu, Rosewood Bar & Grill offers something that most patrons have never seen, a ‘martini flight.’ The ‘flight’ offers six three-ounce martini sample beverages so patrons can become acquainted with their cocktail menu. Martini options include: Espresso, Jalapeno, Tang, Rosewood Cosmopolitan, Fruit Cocktail and Tropical Vacation. Variety is the spice of life and no matter if it is on the cocktail or entrée menu, introducing new items and new flavors is the key to maintain success at Rosewood Bar & Grill. “For the future we will be offering more organic, gluten-free and vegetarian options because that is what the public is demanding,” says McLeod. “We are going to try to offer as many gluten-free items as possible, like our Spaghetti Squash. We have been voted best fine dining in Lodi for the last 11 years in a row and we will keep listening to our customers to keep that streak alive.”

IN SEASON GRAPES
GRAPES BY MICHELE BIRD
From straight off the vine to your kitchen table, grapes are an ingredient that can be used in any meal. Wine country is prominent in California and there are many local vineyards scattered throughout Lodi to Napa. Grapes can vary in color ranging from red, purple, and white. To help maintain the freshness, you should refrigerate grapes for a time frame lasting one to two weeks. When you are ready to prepare the grapes for cooking or simply snacking, don’t forget to wash them under some water prior to consumption. For those who have

never cooked with this small fruit, there are an infinite amount of recipes you can utilize. Grapes are hitting the menu more frequently and are no longer known just as the traditional raisins, wine, or juice. Some techniques when cooking with grapes can include roasting, grilling, baking, or sautĂŠing. It primarily depends what type of flavor you are trying to achieve in your dish. As plan your next culinary masterpiece, be sure to consider using grapes to spruce up an old school recipe. Grapes can provide the perfect flavor kick to amp up every
type of cuisine. Some recipes where you may not expect grapes to be one of the key ingredients are salsa, baked potatoes, or soup. You could also take the classic approach with grapes and create your own one-of-a-kind jelly or juice blend from scratch. Whether it is dinner or dessert, you might find out that grapes have become your go-to ingredient for years to come. Not to mention, fruit and vino lovers are guaranteed to find this delicious flavor to be a hit!

FINAL THOUGHTS
BY KELLY POLLARD
IT’S ALWAYS WINE TIME September brings that special time of harvest and celebration of all things wine. I can’t quite remember when I learned to like wine, and how it transitioned from casual acquaintance to illicit love affair. Perhaps it was after I became a mother that I truly understood the solace in each little drop. I started with Cabernet and Merlots. The smoky, hickory liquid was as soothing to my senses as the milk that lulled my babies into blissed out nap nirvana. Nothing calmed this frazzled mother with more ease than a fragrant glass. Wine became a staple for weekends, but also for TGIF, Manic Monday, and Thirsty Thursday. White wine used to give me a headache. Then I discovered Sauvignon Blanc and rarely looked back at my reds languishing on the wine rack. No more pesky wine stains either. I am no expert though… I’m surrounded by all manners of wineries and wine bars. I’m just as happy with certain five dollar brands as the swankier options. I’m the admitted amateur wine lover. I’m the one who shows up at the tasting room chewing gum, throwing it away, then sipping my first taste much to the wine pourer’s chagrin. I don’t bat a lash when my brother pours his red wine over ice like a cocktail (I just hide my expensive bottles from him) and I’m too impatient to let a freshly opened bottle of wine breath. It took me years to figure out how to operate a
112
wine opener, especially if I’d already had a glass or two before operating. What a relief that I’m no longer the party killer that snaps the cork in half leaving flaky shards floating in the bottle. My next level of wine expertise will be installing a wine fridge into the kitchen to keep all the wines at optimal temperature. Yes, I do realize it’s not proper to throw a bottle of warm white wine in the freezer for thirty minutes, but that’s never stopped me. I realize there is an art to pairing particular wines with food, although it took me awhile to get the connection. I thought wineries served cheese and chocolate while we tasted so my stomach had something in it to counteract the alcohol. After understanding the connection between fine foods and wine, I also realized that wine was an eager partner with almost anything—picnics, leisurely bike rides, The Bachelor television binges, and even tastings while grocery shopping. For some reason, my husband wasn’t quite onboard with my business proposition of opening a wine and pedicure bar. Perhaps he feared I’d drink all the inventory while my customers’ feet pruned wrinkled up unattended in swirling foot bathes as I swirled my own sparkling wine glass. Alas, I shall have to stay content with purely recreational wine ventures, whether it’s sharing a bottle with girlfriends or sipping alone while catching trashy television shows. So what if it’s the middle of the week. It is Wine Wednesday after all.
