"I cook with wine. Sometimes I even add it to the food.” -W.C. Fieldsul.”
Our abundant region is ever evolving. You need only turn down a road that leads into the rows and rows of Zinfandel vines, or look upon the rich berries that create some of the best Chardonnay around to fully realize our success. Indeed, corner shops and buildings that had once lain empty for years have now been filled with rising classics in the dining scene. And I rejoice in another meal to be had, paired with the laughter of friends and the rewards of a wine industry that continues to grow with its everincreasing demand. Those that call San Joaquin home have worked hard to continue the success our families have built from the foundation-up. From the cool crest of the orchards surrounding Lockeford and Linden, Escalon and Ripon, to the nutrient-rich soils of Tracy and the Delta islands, right on up and through Stockton and Lodi, we are truly lucky to have the honor of calling this land home. But just as the land nurtures us, so do we mimic its efforts in how we treat our fellow San Joaquinians. And how could we not, when we ourselves rally together in an ever-expanding number of chefs and bistro entrepreneurs, bakeries and more in the dining industry alone? And that’s why, my friends, it’s an honor to see our second year of Wine Dine 209 finding its way to your door, lingering alongside your table during meals, and acting as your guide to the developing dining scene of San Joaquin. We’ve worked hard to showcase the best venues for any and all appetites, providing modern and American flavors, or tastes that first came to our shores from Thailand and Japan, the Mediterranean and more. Whether you’re fond of igniting that inner food critic, or would rather spend weekends lost in the backwoods of our appellation, know that we’ve cultivated the perfect companion to your endless, and truly enjoyable, journey.
Bon Appétit!

THE
A LITTLE HISTORY
LOWDOWN ON LODI
With history as rich as its soil, Lodi Wine Country has made quite a name for itself in recent years. Fourth and fifth generation farmers and vintners have taken the reins, guiding our appellation through an evolutionary period—with creativity and innovation working as driving forces. Old meets new and excels—not only in bottled blends, but in the picturesque tasting rooms that have been renovated from family homes of the farmers that fill your cup. Their humble beginnings are honored and celebrated as the fruits of their labor allow for growth—resulting in ridiculously quaint spaces and brand new tasting rooms tucked in lush foliage, along the river and rolling rows of vines. Take a seat, because it’s Lodi’s time!
THE SPICE
OF LIFE What is… Variety? The self-proclaimed Zinfandel Capital of the World is branching out—literally! While Lodi still produces over 40 percent of California’s Zinfandel, our appellation now boasts 125 varieties of grapes, more than anywhere in the nation. And, as you may have guessed, there’s more to varietal wines than just your classic Cabs, Merlots, and Sauvignon Blancs—popular varietals you need to try include the Spanish Tempra nillo, a savory table wine with the structure of a Cab and the meaty na-
ture of a Caringnan, boasting domi nant flavors of cherry, dried fig, cedar, and tobacco. Refresh yourself with an Italian Vermentino or perhaps a German Riesling that plays along notes of apple and tree fruit. Enjoy the richness of an Italian Barbera or the deep, fruity Teroldego. Make like a true wine aficionado and add some spice to your life!
SEEKING SUSTAINABILITY We all want to make sure our agriculture industry is fighting for a greener tomorrow, and the wine industry is no exception. Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing awards vineyard certification to grape growers who adopt holistic approaches to farming, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to protect wildlife and their habitats, minimizing tractor usage to protect air quality, preserving native grasses and trees, and so much more. Next time you’re shopping for a bottle of wine, be sure to look for a Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing seal.
GEORGE
WEST AND CHARLES WEBER
While most people know of Captain Charles Weber as the founder of Stockton, he was also a trailblazer of Lodi’s soon-to-boom wine industry. In 1850, Charles planted grapes around his home and became the area’s first grape farmer. Two years later, George West, a Massachusetts man who came for the gold and stayed for the grapes, was inspired by Weber’s successful vineyard and planted a his own near the Calaveras River where north Stockton and the present-day Lodi AVA intersect. In 1858, George West and his brother established the first winery ever to exist in the area, El Pinal Winery.

and climate are the real MVP’s in Lodi’s future. With the environment and society in mind—growers, scholars, and wine experts formed Lodi Rules, the first third-party-certified sustainable winegrowing program. Under the Lodi Winegrape Commission, Lodi Rules works to be environmentally sound, socially equitable, and economically feasible. Today, over 20,000 acres are certified sustainable in the AVA, and local wines wearing the ‘Lodi Rules’ seal are putting the planet first. They practice more than 100 sustainable farming measures, including the limitation of crop protection by maintaining habitats for natural pest predators, regulation of water usage, and utilization of compost and organic matter. Members of this rigorous and comprehensive program pledge to protect the land, workers, and community—all while producing top-notch, award-winning wines.

DAVID’S NEW YORK STYLE PIZZA
A Taste of the East Coast in San Joaquin It’s one of the hardest decisions you’ll ever make. Staring down that list of specialty pizzas is a trip onto a game show. You know you’re going to win, but what will you be walking away with? A Taste of Gilroy, in all its pepperoni, garlic, and tomato splendor? Or perhaps a Chicken Fajita, garnished with chicken, bell peppers, red onions, and colby jack cheese? Or you could, you know, spice things up and build your own, too. But when there are so many appetizers, salads, sandwiches and burgers to choose from, you’ll be straight back in that hot seat. Not that it’s a bad thing.
CORNER SCONE BAKERY Fresh, Flavorful, and Filling
Whether you’ve got a sweet tooth, or you’re looking for something savory, Corner Scone Bakery has got your taste buds covered! While specializing in treats like their mouth-watering scones, toffee bars, cupcakes, and sugar cookies, this bakery serves the masses with house-crafted quiches and soups, salads and hand pies. It’s rare you’ll see the same variation two days in a row, but when every flavor is you’re absolute fav, you’re not technically being picky. And did we mention they have a tea room?
Inspired by: New York Style Pizza Perfect for: Family dinners, a night out on the town, and when you’re too lazy to wash yesterday’s dishes to make dinner tonight.
Inspired by: Sugar Plum Fairies Perfect for: A quick bite with friends in the morning or early afternoon.

HOW-TO TIPS
HOW TO BUILD A BETTER CHEESEBOARD
WITH HELP FROM THE FINE FOODIE PHILANTHROPIST BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER Are you intimidated by the thought of crafting your own cheeseboard? We get it—Pinterest has certainly set high aesthetic expectations. But, I have some simple D.I.Y. tricks of the trade to make entertaining easy all year long. Because let’s be real, there isn’t a better to serve alongside a bottle of Lodi wine when hosting friends! Before we give you the step-by-step breakdown, let’s talk about the cheese. Pick three to six cheeses, based on the size of your crowd. Include a variety of cheeses: Cow’s milk, goat, and sheep. And be sure to include both hard
and soft cheeses! I always like to include an aged gouda (Old Amsterdam), a brie (Domaine De Vallage) or goat (Humboldt Fog), and a hard cheese like a sharp cheddar (Tillamook or Fiscalini). With hundreds of cheeses available to choose from, it’s hard to go wrong. So, follow these simple steps to build a better cheeseboard and impress your guests. If you’re not sure where to start, Cheese Central in downtown Lodi is your first stop! Their cheesemongers are ready and waiting to provide a unique cheese-tasting experience that will allow you to confidently create your board!
Step 1: Pick out your platter or board. Round or square, wood, marble or slate, it really doesn’t matter.
Step 2: Add your cheese. Spread them out depending on size and color.
Step 3: Add something salty—think meat, olives, and
nuts. We love prosciutto, soprassetta and pate. But basic salami works well, too! For olives, the sky is the limit— and when it comes to nuts you simply can’t go wrong. My absolute favorite is Marcona almonds.
Step 4: Add something sweet. You can use a variety
of fresh and dried fruits for your board. Always think seasonally. Summertime calls for berries and figs, while fall begs for apples and dried apricots. Grapes are a fruit available all year long and a cheeseboard staple.
Step 5: Add crackers and/or bread to fill in any empty spaces. Opt for a variety of crackers from multi-grain to flatbreads, and maybe even some breadsticks!
Step 6: Add your condiments. This is the stuff that
brings the cheese to life! Think fig jam, honey, pepper jellies, and stone ground mustard. Place these items in small bowls to keep the liquid from oozing all over your board.
Step 7: Fill in remaining spaces with leftover nuts, herbs, fruits, and meats.
Step 8: Put out some wine and dig in with friends and family! 80

WINEDINE209 2018 EDITION
FINE FOODIE'S PRO TIPS Take your cheese out of the refrigerator 30 minutes to one hour before serving to allow cheese time to reach room temperature. Display some cheeses whole, and cut others into pieces for easy picking. Don’t stress over symmetrical perfection! The best cheeseboards are in the ingredients, not the display. If you can find raw honeycomb, use it over regular honey. The depth of flavor is incredible!
