WINTER WORTHY TRIPS By Nora Heston Tarte
Winter has welcomed cold weather to San Joaquin County giving residents two choices when it comes to this season’s vacation plans: they can either head to the snow-capped mountains where winter activities abound, or they can get the hell out of dodge, and move toward warmer weather where it’s easy to pretend summer is still upon us.

UPFRONT 209
JINGLE the WAY all
“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” ~ Norman Vincent Peale
I’m the guy that can’t wait until Thanksgiving to start decorating for the holidays. As soon as we take our Nightmare Before Christmas Halloween Extravaganza down, the Zoccoli family is back at it, stringing rainbow lights, positioning reindeer and jingling all the way. I love the holidays. The magic, the fun, and the family time—you can’t beat it. Of course, there is always a little stress that comes with the season. There are presents to buy, parties to plan, and dinners to cook. After all, it just wouldn’t be the same without a little madness. I’ve come to expect my Great Danes to steal at least one main component of our holiday dinner off the counter—It keeps things interesting! I have to admit the only job I’d take over Publisher of San Joaquin Magazine, is Santa. And I mean the real Santa, people! Not Billy Bob Thornton’s take… however hilarious it may be. There honestly has to be nothing better than his gig. He lives in the North Pole, drives a flying slay, and brings everyone presents. My dogs are basically one step away from reindeer… they just need the antlers… and well, the ability to fly. I guess that’s a crucial element, so I’ll stick to my own version of Santa. I make the kids wear antler headbands, we make waffles on Christmas morning, and we joke and laugh as we hand out presents and enjoy what’s wrapped inside. There is nothing sweeter. Surrounding that very special morning is an entire month of opportunity. Let the season inspire you to find bliss! Whether it be helping those in need experience a celebration or your proportion, or discovering the true meaning yourself, our thoughtful community is always here to help. San Joaquin residents truly support and encourage each other to be there best and that’s something rare and it must be celebrated and treasured! Consider bringing the holidays to a family that may not have one, by donating to Child Abuse Prevention Council, in support of their aim to give over 600 local families a special Christmas morning. You’ll find so much more meaning, and you’ll be glad you did. Don’t get lost in the consumerism! A simple, love-filled Christmas is all anyone needs. Although I do enjoy the bells and whistles, I’d be just as happy with a Charlie Brown Christmas tree, as long as my family and I spent a night stringing popcorn garland.
Happiest of holidays, from my family to yours.
Tony Zoccoli, Publisher/Editor

HOLIDAYS CAPC DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR LIVES HER PURPOSE BY LINDSEY RODRIAN PHOTOS BY DAN HOOD

“What is my purpose?” Shauna Jacob asked herself while working through The Purpose Driven Life program with her husband at Lodi’s First Baptist Church. Without a clear answer, “We went on a journey to figure it out.” At that time, the mother of two and business marketing major worked closely with her father—a business developer—and together they opened numerous businesses, built them up, and sold them off. “Many families within our church were fostering and adopting,” Shauna explains. “And

due to substance abuse issues within my family, I was used to dealing with people in crisis.” Shauna also had custody of her niece, and her husband had spent time at Mary Graham Shelter in his youth before joining the Marines. “So, we had a bit of background on how the foster care system worked, and decided to go through the process.” Shauna and her family flew through the steps required by foster applicants, and soon welcomed their first placement, two young boys in need of two-day respite care placement. As Shauna explains, respite care placement serves as a break for foster families, and the stay was much more challenging than the Jacob family anticipated. A few months later they opened their doors again, to an AB12 girl in need of a home. “AB12 allows children that have spent most of their time in the system to remain there until they’re 21, instead of 18,” Shauna explains. “It was an amazing experience. We quickly realized our family worked much better with older children.” As the Jacobs continued to care for AB12 girls, Shauna became involved in Safe Families, a national program that operates under the umbrella of her church. “The church came to me in 2012 and asked if I’d be interested in heading the program,” Shauna says. With years of varied business experience under her belt, she jumped right in, working with families from the church that are teamed with families in crisis. “Safe Families take a child in, and also work with their parents as they get things in order, and go 40

through needed steps to put their family in a stronger place.” Shauna continues, “Today, many families are socially isolated and their extended family is nonexistent, or unavailable or unable to help. That’s where Safe Families steps in to be the support system for a family in need.” A year later, First Baptist was approached by the Lisa Project—a ten-minute, gut-wrenching, interactive experience about child abuse—in hopes to share their message with the community. Shauna presented the Project and its proposed partnership to the congregation, emphasizing the faith-based community’s responsibility to help fight child abuse. Unknowingly, San Joaquin County Child Abuse Prevention Council’s (CAPC) Executive Director, Lindy Turner-Hardin, also heard her message. “She approached me after hearing me
speak and said, ‘You need to come work for me!’” Shauna joined the public relations team at CAPC, with a goal to act as a bridge between the organization and the local faith-based community. As she climbed the ranks to her current title as Development Director—CAPC’s operating budget increased by a whopping $11 million. “This is our first year with the $14 million budget,” Shauna says, “So, this is our year of stabilization!” A part of the many projects, events, and resources CAPC offers is Adopt a Family—a holiday-focused program for children receiving services at CAPC. “As the program grew, we realized the importance of family bonding and changed it to be more of a pickup site—to encourage families to be together, open the presents at home, and take the opportunity to have quality time together,” Shauna says. “The families that we work with are in crisis. They’re facing a battering array of situations, dealing with hard topics, and their children are often seeing things they never should, experiencing things they have no control over… things that could define their life. We want to step in for those families and give them a hand up for the holidays,” Shauna says. Currently, CAPC brings Christmas to nearly 600 children, with help from amazing donors—like St. Joseph’s who gifts the program’s first 200 kids—and individual supporters. Donors may select the age and sex of the child before receiving the child’s wish list via email. “Having money at Christmas is stressful, imagine having none and a child that is asking if Santa is coming tonight…. That’s a burden these parents won’t have to carry this year.”

REDUCE HOLIDAY STRESS & WORRY
the natural way BY NORA HESTON TARTE
When winter comes, the season’s holiday cheer may be tinged with dread. The excessive time commitments, gift buying, hosting duties, and traditions can take a toll on our psyche. Instead of letting an overwhelming to-do list get you down, learn how to fight holiday stress the all-natural way. Here are five all-natural tips we’re employing to cut holiday stress and worry this season.
1
2
Just say no! Our holiday calendar is brimming with events this holiday season (see our 209 Agenda), and we bet yours is, too. From Christmas parties to tree-lighting ceremonies, office get-togethers to Christmas caroling, the holidays seem to be a never ending parade—don’t forget the parades!—of “musts.” Take a step back and reevaluate your calendar before all those commitments commit you to the loony bin. Be choosey about your plans, and say no when you can. Downtime is just as important during the holidays!
42
Go tech-free. When it comes to technology, it’s easy to get caught up in sharing the great things we are doing whilst forgetting to truly enjoy them. Put down the phone, power down the laptop, and be in the moment. Ditching the tech—if only for a few hours— will reduce stress and deepen connections with family and friends.
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2016
3
DIY aromatherapy. Unless you’re baking fresh cookies at home, ditch the sugary scents that are in abundance during the holidays and instead fill your home with citrus. Light a Citrus Delight pillar from Carole’s Candles, Inc. or stock up on a selection of Greenleaf, Voluspa, and Luminara verities from Mia Bella’s Boutique in Tracy. Don’t forget to overhaul your toiletries with orange- and lemon-scented products. (French at Heart in Lodi sells plenty!)
4
Give yourself a squeeze. See the fleshy part of your hand located between the thumb and pointer finger? It’s called the Hoku Point. Chinese medicine dictates squeezing this area tightly for 30 seconds will instantly relieve feelings of stress, as well as headache. Do it yourself anytime you feel stress taking over, step up the practice with a pair of Chinese stress balls, or schedule a massage with a acupressure specialist for more impact.
5
Watch what you eat. Instead of counting calories, whip up meals with stress-beating ingredients. Honey, mango, and spicy soups are all shown to lower stress, so order up a bowl of hot and sour soup at Peking in Stockton or munch on Towne House Restaurant in Lodi’s fresh, Dungeness crab cakes made with mango aioli. Don’t forget to eat breakfast, too. “The most important meal of the day” does wonders for your mood.

FUELING PASSION WITH FASHION BY COPPER WILLIAMS
Our community is something special. We come from all walks of life, striving to build up the region we call home. It’s certainly some-
thing to take pride in, which many of us do. But now there’s a non-profit that showcases that pride in t-shirt form. Live 209 is an organization that produces a variety of cutely designed t-shirts and tanks, each printed with an ornate version of “Live 209” on the front. But besides the cool design, what makes these tees so unique? With every t-shirt that’s purchased, one is donated and 100 percent of the profits go directly back to the community. That’s right! Treat yourself to something special while simultaneously giving back. How’s that for a win-win? The idea sprang to life when founders Rima Barkett, Susan Traverso, and Lynette Zeiter were volunteering in Guatemala. Their work away from home spurred them to find some way to show pride and unity in their beloved 209. With designs by Danielle Zeiter, Live 209 sets out to events in our area, showcasing their passion for serving our community while also remaining pretty stylish! The tees are also available for purchase at Blackbird Boutique, Zuesters, and Caterpillar Children’s Boutique in Stockton. The sizes vary—from kids to adults—so everyone in the family can gear up. And organizations are encouraged to show their support, too! Corporate sponsorships are available for those who’d like to get their whole business revved up or to instill pride in their workers’ community.

AGE OF
the ugly
SWEATER BY COPPER WILLIAMS Who’d have guessed that those lacelined, ribbon laden bundles of wool would become the mainstream trend for winter 2016? I sure didn’t! But darn it all, if they aren’t the comfiest, warmest garments to wear during the holiday season! That’s right! Suddenly those hand-made sweaters grandma won’t stop dishing out every year are making runway appeal, much to her knitting circle’s delight! But how can you tell that your holiday garment is up to snuff? Simple! Follow our handy checklist below and rest easy knowing you’re the highlight of this year’s Ugly Sweater Showdown!
LOUD & PROUD
Your sweater should have at least three opposing colors. The harsher they clash, the better!
PATTERN OR SEASONAL OBJECT
If that checkered top or break dancing reindeer isn’t the highlight of the punch bowl discussion, you’re doing it wrong.
3-D GOGGLES NOT REQUIRED
Whether they’re ornaments dangling from your shoulder blades, Rudolf’s nose in the form of a little foam ball, or Santa’s scarf spilling off his two-dimensional neck and strangling your own, some part of your sweater had better be breaking the fourth wall.
ALL THAT GLITTERS
Not gaudy enough? Tinfoil and pom-poms are your friend. Give in to sweet temptation and go wild.

THE ROOT OF
GOODNESS GINGER’S SUPERCHARGED BENEFITS BY COPPER WILLIAMS
From ginger tea and infused smoothies to gingerbread— it seems as if everyone is head over heels for the flowering plant’s rhizome (root), which has been cultivated and used in cultures throughout the globe for centuries. This special spice has cropped up in various desserts, diet plans, and detox teas. Even celebrities like Selena Gomez have made it a part of their daily regimen! Whether you’re curious about all the Hollywood hype, following the latest trends, or walking to the beat of your own hip and healthy drum during your ginger discoveries, studies have shown how wonderful this intriguing piece of plant is for our bodies! Ginger originally hails from southern Asia, grown from the Zingiber officinale plant. Although it may look like the root, it’s actually an underground stem! Ginger thrives in tropical climates, where the temperature and humidity are equally high. Throughout its journey across the continents, it’s become a staple in teas, sweets, beers, and various recipes. And as many ginger fans can attest, it’s the perfect all-natural prescription for a variety of stomach problems. Going on a cruise, but worried about seasickness? Bring along some candied ginger to chew on for nausea relief. Feeling a little funny after dining out? Knock out any nasty bacteria brewing in your belly by drinking a few cups of ginger tea to curb dysentery. Studies have confirmed that ginger can help relieve muscle pain and aids with cramping during monthly menstrual cycles. Another huge benefit from this miracle spice is how 46

helpful it’s been for cancer patients currently taking chemo. It’s not only curbing those nasty bouts of nausea, but helping to improve appetite! If you aren’t so keen on tea or candy, go Gomez style and chug it all down in one go with a ginger shot. These liquid boosts are shown to support your digestive and immune system and help keep intestinal inflammation at an alltime low. So, what are you waiting for? Get your hands on some ginger and start feeling better today!
A CUP OF GINGER TEA
Make a fresh batch of ginger tea with our easy recipe: After purchasing fresh ginger, wash and peel it down. Cut ginger into thin slices and drop into a cup. Pour boiling water over top and add fresh lemon juice or honey to taste. Sip away and enjoy all the benefits.
The kids table has never been more magical. Every child gets a special visit from Santa on this storybook adventure.

STICK it to ‘EM!
HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Most people have a resolution in mind during the countdown to the New Year. Plenty have guzzled down their last bit of champagne, vowing to give up that bad habit once and for all, gain the physique they know is hiding behind a few inches of belly fat, or take up an interesting hobby they’ve always wanted to learn. The hard part? Actually sticking to these commitments….Luckily, San Joaquin Magazine is ready and more than willing to help you give those resolutions the one-two step—providing key advice from professionals on how to stick ‘em out! Stay strong, San Joaquinians! LOSE WEIGHT “Crossfit—when programmed and coached correctly—is a great workout for every body, young and old. It’s fun to participate in and to learn, while also allowing you to go at your own pace and be a part of a community. It balances all elements of fitness and can help make your body injury-proof and long lasting." – Gabe Subry, Crossfit209 LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE “If you are serious about learning a language in 2017, High Intensity Language Training summer session at the San Joaquin County Office of Education offers five days of intensive instruction of Spanish for educators, and is open to the general public. We design these classes so that educators and others can have a firsthand experience of language acquisition, which in turn reinforces the importance of the teaching strategies we simultaneously model.” – Karen Linn-Nieves, Director of Language & Literacy at San Joaquin County Office of Education BETTER MANAGE STRESS “Simplify your to-do list. Having too much on your plate can be a recipe for an emotional meltdown. There’s no shame in scaling back your activities and obligations, when possible, to simplify your life. Don’t let the abundance of great ideas you’ve pinned on Pinterest make you feel like you should be doing more.” – Cathy Francis, PsyD, MFT, Social Services Director of St. Joseph’s Behavioral Health STAY ORGANIZED “So many people hang on to chotskies way too long. Do you really need 29 snow globes from every amusement part you ever visited? My recommendation is to purge your living spaces of all excess items. If they are extremely important to you, pick your very favorite three and donate the rest to a thrift store.” – Kathleen Jennison, KTJ Design Co., Certified Interior Designer 48

FRIENDS OF A FEATHER LOCAL OWLS PROVIDE RODENT-RESPITE IN VINEYARDS BY COPPER WILLIAMS
If you’ve strolled along the grape vines at twilight, or enjoyed an evening tasting at one of Lodi’s wineries, you’ve probably heard the tell-tale screech of an owl overhead. Perhaps you’ve been lucky enough to spot those flapping wings—off for a late night snack—hard at work ensuring the safety of the vines! Yes, owls have become an important part of pest management in our Lodi Appellation—so much so, that farmers and wine growers are offering up free homes in the form of owl boxes in order to receive round-the-clock rodent control. “In the early 1990s, Lodi winegrowers were encouraged to utilize owl boxes as part of an integrated approach to rodent control,” Stuart Spencer, Program Manager at the Lodi Winegrape Commission, explains. “A family of barn owls occupying
one box can consume 2,000-3,000 rodents (mostly pocket gophers, a pest in local vineyards) in one season.” Boasting lowcost, low hassle, and all natural pest control, many fields and vineyards are welcoming owls via owl box establishment. One such owl box rests on the property of Twisted Barrel Winery, which the Tanner Family installed in late 2015. “My parents also live on our ranch, and they are bird watchers,” Maxine Tanner explains. “We agreed that it would be an interesting pastime, and beneficial for the vineyard, as the owls can keep the rodent population under control.” During an expedition to check out the box, a friend of the Tanner’s accidentally bumped the pole, and down one of the owlets went. Luckily, their family friend, an experienced falconer, was able to return the (unharmed but unable to fly) owlet back in its home. Just a few weeks later, the owlets were well on their way to becoming expert rodent catchers, providing sustainable benefits for themselves and their wine-loving counterparts!

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR Barn Owls are the norm for our region, well known by their heart shaped faces and how quietly they can swoop on by! In fact, you won’t hear a hoot out of them, but rather a screech. These non-territorial predators communicate with their fellow barn owls through high-pitched cries and shrieks, maintaining their mutual perimeters and keeping the vineyards rodent-free.

Gifts
BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
FOR YOUR
guy
Are you stumped about what to get that special guy who geeks out over the coolest new gadgets and gizmos? We put together this list to help you out!
THE OUTDOORSY GUY: Suunto GPS Watch
Any outdoorsy guy knows that using a smartphone is unreliable, spotty, and almost always dies too quickly, so it’s not a good option to also double as a GPS device. Besides, saving your phone’s battery is important for emergency phone calls. That’s why having a dedicated and reliable GPS watch with fewer extra features and more functionality could be a lifesaver. Available online at Suunto.com.

THE NERDY GUY:
PlayStation 4 Virtual Reality Headset Virtual reality is finally here to stay. You might have heard of Oculus, a company that Facebook bought a couple of years ago for a few billion dollars. Now, this holiday season, Sony is releasing its answer with the PlayStation VR headset. Every nerdy guy will want one of these if they have a PlayStation 4. Available through Amazon and you local Best Buy or GameStop.
THE TECH GUY: Google Home
Personal assistants are expensive. But what if you could buy your guy a household item that could act like his own assistant around the entire house? Send emails, make appointments, check traffic, and more using nothing more than your voice. That’s what Google Home is all about. The device works similarly to the Amazon Echo, but with more seamless Android integration with all of your devices. Available online at Google.com.
THE CREATIVE GUY: M3D Micro 3D Printer
If your guy has a creative edge, then chances are he is quickly reaching the limit of what he can create with pen, paint, and paper. Sculpting taps a whole new part of the creative mind and, while molding clay and carving ice is great, a more tech-focused angle can be fun. 3D printers let people design shapes and objects on a computer and then print it out in full form! Available at Staples and various online retailers.

THE “I’ve got to get the newest thing” GUY: Snapchat Spectacle Glasses
We all know this guy. Before you even have a chance to ask him if he wants something, he probably already has the next model of the device you hadn’t even heard of yet. Well, there’s nothing quite like these yet. These glasses have Snapchat built into them, so all you do is tap a button and—BOOM!—It records a 10-second snap straight to your Memories feed. Available online at Spectacles.com.
THE HANDYMAN GUY: LawnBott
Remember the Roomba? It was that little robot that would zoom around your living room and clean up everything without you having to pull out your actual vacuum cleaner. This is like that, but for your lawn. That’s right, it’s a robot lawnmower. If that doesn’t sound amazing, then I don’t know what to say. It would free up tons of his time and be fun to show off to friends. Available online at LawnBott.com.
THE SPORTS GUY:
Sony W Series Wearable MP3 Player Bluetooth headphones are the new standard for listening to music while working out or doing anything active. But no one wants to hold their smartphone the entire time, which is why these ear buds are so great: they have an MP3 player found inside! So regardless of which sports or activity your guy loves, these will certainly come in handy. Available at Walmart and various online retailers. 70

THE FISHERMAN GUY:
Fishing Hot Spots Pro 2016 In this day and age, most of us don’t turn on our car without having a GPS handy, why would anyone want to start up a boat any differently? The lakes, rivers, and oceans of the world are nearly impossible to navigate without a reliable map and this device is the most up-to-date resource for not only traversing the waters, but finding the fish as well. Available at Bass Pro Shops and various online retailers.
THE MUSIC LOVING GUY: Remidi Pro Glove
If your guy loves music and gadgets, then this is perfect. It’s a glove that you wear like normal on your hand, but it also doubles as a musical instrument. Basically, it can turn someone into a musical wizard of magic and technology. It’s a gadget that he never knew he wanted until you give it to him. Available online at Remidi-pro.com.
THE RETRO GUY: NES Classic Edition
Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, and the list goes on and on. If your guy was a child of the 80s or 90s, then he probably has fond memories of the original Nintendo. This little hunk of plastic packs 30 of the system’s best games into a single device that you can plug and play in any modern television. Available at Target, Best Buy, and various online retailers. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

Winter has welcomed cold weather to San Joaquin County, giving residents two choices when it comes to this season’s vacation plans: they can either head to the snow-capped mountains where winter activities abound, or they can get the hell out of dodge, and move toward warmer weather where it’s easy to pretend summer is still upon us. Check out our top choices for fun winter escapes that could have you tanning poolside, or cozying up to a roaring fire.

A short drive from San Joaquin County, Lake Tahoe is an obvious pick for winter enthusiasts, and if you look beyond the most apparent choices, you’ll find obscure activities—with just as much appeal—lurk nearby.
to Northstar (5001 Northstar Dr., Truckee) to slide down the slopes, but there’s more adventure to be had in Lake Tahoe. Let a team of huskies guide you through the Sierra Nevada by dog sled (dogsledadventure.com), and take up snowshoeing (almost all of the ski resorts in Lake Tahoe offer equipment rentals and trails). A quick search turns up an abundance of routes—and if you booked a dog-friendly room at the Landing Resort, there are plenty of dog-friendly snowshoe trails around, too.
WHERE TO STAY:
Cedar Glen Lodge (6589 N. Lake Blvd., Tahoe Vista) is an ideal stop for those looking to embrace the mountain life. From one- or two-bedroom suites to cozy cottages across from the lake, it’s easy to spend the entire weekend holed up indoors, with frequent trips to the wine bar (complete with fireplace), hot tub, and The Rustic Lounge, where an award-winning chef duo serve seasonal fare in a casual fine dining restaurant. With a flair all its own, The Landing Resort & Spa (4104 Lakeshore Blvd.) is a boutique hotel with a fivestar rating offering lakefront properties and premium suites. Every detail not so subtly screams extravagance, from the plush robes you can wear to the spa to the in-room fireplaces that make every space a romantic escape for guests. You can even invite Fido to join the family vacation by booking a petfriendly room at the property.
WHERE TO EAT:
Stop at The Dam Café (55 W. Lake Blvd., Tahoe City) for organic, easy breakfast foods and a cup of the best hot chocolate on the planet—so they say. Here, visitors can buy everything from coffee to burritos.
WHERE TO PLAY: Everyone knows to head to Heavenly (4080 Lake Tahoe Blvd.) for the best views, or saunter 92

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2016
Visiting Yosemite in winter is like discovering Yosemite for the first time.
WHERE TO STAY: Previously known as the Ahwahnee, The Majestic Yosemite Hotel (1 Ahwahnee Dr.) has been rebranded—and updated—to offer all the luxury the Awahnee was known for under a new name. Recent renovations re-imagined several areas of the historic hotel, including the bar and subsequent kitchen. Set on the valley
floor, rooms proffer views of Half Dome, Glacier Point, and Yosemite Falls, and the hotel is just 1.5 miles from Yosemite Village. Book travel on New Year’s Eve and partake in an opulent celebration of the hotel’s 90th anniversary, complete with live music, a lavish six-course
dinner, dancing, and more. If you’re looking to rekindle the romance, book a room at Tin Lizzie (7731 Laurel Way, Fish Camp), a cozy bed and breakfast with opportunity to drive model-T cars.
WHERE TO EAT: Both hotels come with their own on-site dining options. Eat in the chandelier-lit dining room at The Majestic Yosemite Hotel, or indulge in a home-style meal at Tin Lizzie. Nearby Yosemite Village has options, too—including Half Dome Village Pizza Deck (9010 Curry Village Dr.), a pie and beer eatery with park views.
www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
WHERE TO PLAY: Hiking in winter grants guests breathtaking views you can’t get in July, and there are safe trails to traipse through despite the snow at Curry Village, as well as seasonal ice-skating. Don’t miss a trip to Badger Pass (7082 Glacier Point Rd.), where you can take up snowshoeing, roast s’mores (as snow falls around you), and sip spiked hot chocolate. If you’re looking for a challenge, ski Half Dome!

The rustic, bare bones accommodations at Mt. Tamalpais State Park allow visitors to truly escape.
WHERE TO STAY:
Forego lavish hotels for understated cabins at Steep Ravine (Stinson Beach). Outside each front door exist spectacular views of the water, bridges, dense forests, and dramatic cliffs. Beware, the accommodations lack modern amenities such as electricity and cell reception. Instead, this cool take on a winter escape has whales leaping outside your door, and fire pits to warm your toes next to. Want to enjoy all the State Park has to offer without forgoing luxury? Stay nearby at the Marin Suites Hotel (45 Tamal Vista Blvd.), just 3.3 miles away in Corte Madera, and visit the park during the day.
WHERE TO EAT:
Grab elevated grub at The Counter (201 Corte Madera Town Center) or pick up sandwiches to bring back to camp from Boudin SF (1734 Redwood Hwy).
WHERE TO PLAY: Temperatures hover in the 50s and it’s not likely to snow (though it does on occasion) allowing hiking trails to stay open in winter, and fishing to not disappoint.

WHERE TO STAY: There’s no shortage of chic hotels in Monterey making it easy to point and pick. Before making a decision, however, check out The Monterey Hotel (406 Alvarado St.), with fireplace-clad accommodations boasting old world charm in a casual atmosphere, or head to the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa (400 Cannery Row) where luxury lurks in every corner.
WHERE TO EAT: At the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa, Executive Chef James Walker prepares meals at the on-site Schooners Coastal Kitchen & Bar making it a must for hotel guests. If you’re looking for a quick bite, the Wharf Market Place Deli & Café (290 Figueroa St.) serves robust breakfasts and a full menu of coffees.
WHERE TO PLAY: Did you know Monterey is revered for its whale watching? Until December 16, humpback whales, blue whales, orcas, and dolphins are easily seen from the Monterey Bay waters (and killer whales, minke whales, and fin whales are oft spotted, too). After December 17, gray whales and dolphins become the norm. Book a tour—ranging from four hours to all day—and spot these and a variety of other mammals and seabirds, including otters, sea lions, and fur seals (www.gowhales.com). The fourhour trip allows plenty of time to catch glimpses of the majestic creatures as they rotate through feeding locations, and three to seven species are routinely spotted each trip. It gets chilly, so bring a blanket and settle in for the adventure. As you navigate the waters, marine biologists narrate and answer questions. EXPERT TIP: cancellations do occur based on weather, so book a morning trip if possible when weather and visibility are at their best. There’s one more kind of tour you can’t pass up during your rendezvous to Monterey. They say California has it all, but sometimes you have to venture outside the border of our varied state to find the treasures that lie in destinations nearby. About a seven-hour drive from San Joaquin County, Bend, Ore. is revered for its top-notch skiing and après ski activities.
WHERE TO STAY:
Stay near the action at the Mount Bachelor Village Resort (19717 Mt. Bachelor Dr.), or enjoy a $10 million renovation at the revamped Riverhouse on the Deschutes (3075 U.S. 97 Business), a riverfront property with an indoor pool conveniently located near Deschutes National Park.
WHERE TO EAT:
Eat at Scapolos. Perched at 7,800 feet on Mt. Bachelor (3000 Century Dr.), staff serves a casual lunch with a view. Nearby, the Clearing Rock Bar is prime for après ski beverages.
WHERE TO PLAY: Ski Enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies need look no further than Mt. Bachelor, one of the highest-rated mountains in the area. Here, skiers can take daring rides across 3,683 acres of terrain (accessible via ten lifts). Those looking to reach new heights minus the skis can visit the Point Butte State Scenic Viewpoint (Greenwood Ave.) Hike to the summit through clusters of aromatic juniper and sage
plants and marvel at the panoramic views. Snowcapped mountains glow at sunset. Rich in volcanic history, Central Oregon is also known for its lava lands. View the site and learn more at the visitor’s center within Deschutes National Park where experts tell tales from its storied past—from the rumored Native American beginnings to its use for astronaut training in the 1960s.

mid-century modern architecture and cool, contemporary style. Listen to live music on-site, lounge in a poolside cabana, or peruse the menu of spa services, which include flow yoga. When the weather dips into near freezing temperatures, there’s no better place to find a warm weather refuge than Arizona.
WHERE TO STAY:
Stay at the Phoenician (6000 E. Camelback Rd.) and partake in all the activities winter has taken from you. This place has nine pools, a golf course, and a spa! (Did you forget what it felt like to golf without dreading a weather-related cancellation?) Explore the grounds, nestled at the base of Camelback Mountain, and take in cactus gardens, guided tours of the flora and fauna, and a sculpture garden boasting the work of renowned artist Alan Houser. For a stay that promises to be anything but boring, choose Hotel Valley Ho, a brilliant melding of 96

WHERE TO EAT: A celebrity chef whips up culinary masterpieces at the eight dining destinations inside the Phoenician. At Hotel Valley Ho, guests can signup for monthly chef’s dinners or beer and food pairings.
WHERE TO PLAY: If you absolutely must leave the comforts of the resorts, head to the Scottsdale Waterfront (7135 E. Camelback Rd.) to enjoy an afternoon of shopping and dining. The weather is perfect for strolling from store to store without fumbling with an umbrella. And if you’re missing the outdoors, spend time hiking the nearby Arizona Canal Trail or Piestewa Peak.
DECEMBER 2016
Average temperatures still sit in the high 50s to low 60s in Las Vegas in December so there’s nothing limiting how you play in the resort city famed for its vibrant nightlife and around the clock entertainment.
Who says December is an inappropriate time for a beach vacation? We certainly aren’t judging your need for soft sand and crashing waves this time of year, and Coronado Island is just a 14-mile drive from San Diego, making it an accessible escape for San Joaquin residents.
WHERE TO STAY:
Stay at the Bellagio (3600 S. Las Vegas Blvd.), a luxe, Italian-inspired resort that decorates with over-the-top Christmas decorations in December and sets the famous water fountains dance to Christmas tunes. Caesar’s Palace (3570 S. Las Vegas Blvd.) is another option for accommodations amid the festive action. The hotel’s Forum Shops hire scuba elves to feed the tropical fish.
WHERE TO EAT: Restaurants book fast around the holidays. Make reservations at The Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay (3950 S. Las Vegas Blvd.) located 63 stories up with an outdoor patio and sweeping views of the Las Vegas skyline, or chow down at Bellagio’s all-you-can-eat buffet, simply dubbed The Buffet.

WHERE TO STAY:
WHERE TO PLAY: In Las Vegas, the whole city is your playground, but don’t forget to catch these must-see attractions. The LINQ promenade, an outdoor retail, dining, and entertainment plaza, will transform into Winter PARQ starting December 11, with nightly holiday-themed shows every 30 minutes from 5-9 PM. Take in an infamous cirque-style show. Caesar’s Palace hosts Absinthe, a wacky, must-see take on the cirque craze.
Bathe in luxury at Hotel Del Coronado (1500 Orange Ave.), a red-roofed Mecca situated atop one of the best beaches in the world. Because of its southern location, Coronado is warm enough to spend some time at the beach, even if you aren’t dipping into the water, and pre-bed bonfires are the ideal way to warm up in the chilly air. Fancy yourself a history buff? Book a tour of the grounds.

WHERE TO PLAY: Coronado’s picturesque downtown is easily accessible by foot, bike, golf cart, and ferry, and it’s home to plenty of shops and restaurants, making for a pleasant afternoon of exploration. The art scene in Coronado is sizeable. Catch a showing of the Tony Award-winning production A Chorus Line through December 11 at the Coronado Playhouse (1835 Strand Way). Winter is an ideal time to visit this exclusive desert city without melting in its high summer temperatures.
WHERE TO STAY:
Book a room at the Colony Palms Hotel (572 N. Indian Canyon Dr.) where a gorgeous pool surrounded by lounge chairs and cabanas just outside of the on-site restaurant, is a focal point. Rooms boast impressive in-room bars perfect
for pre-dinner drinks, and a Moroccan-themed spa gives guests a place to relax on a couple’s escape or girls trip. Another excellent option is the Korakia Penisone (257 S. Patencio Rd.), where pools are heated to 100 degrees for warm nights and open 24/7. For a special evening affair, head to the courtyard for black and white movies, a truly appropriate offering for the posh desert city.
WHERE TO EAT: There’s no need to venture outside your resort for worthy cuisine. Both hotels offer varied menus across several meals.
WHERE TO PLAY: Stroll down Palm Canyon Drive to visit an array of cute boutiques and interior design shops celebrated for their charming—and varied—tastes. Nearby the Coachella Valley (yes the one famous for its raucous summer music festival) is the perfect backdrop forhiking, biking, and horseback riding. Smoke Tree Stables (2500 S. Toledo Ave.) offers rides over150 miles of open land.
WHERE TO STAY: Go rural at Mesquite Spring Campground with access to the ubehebe crater and racetrack playa or skip camping and head to the Inn at Furnace Creek (328 Greenland Blvd.), a middle of nowhere, four-star oasis.
Death Valley is known as the lowest, driest, and hottest area in North America (in 1913 it reached the record temperature of 134 degrees Fahrenheit at Furnace Creek where the name alone speaks volumes about daily temps). During winter, however, daytime temperatures are mild, and it only occasionally reaches freezing at night, making it an ideal escape for outdoorsy families.
WHERE TO EAT:
Enjoy casual saloon dining at Stovepipe Wells (Rte. 190), or opt for fine dining at The Inn at Furnace Creek Dining Room (Hwy 190).
WHERE TO PLAY: Known as an outdoor playground because of its many trails for hiking, biking, and more, Death Valley is ideal for families, friends, and couples, and despite lower temperatures, December marks slow season so families can take advantage of reduced rates and less crowds. Kids will enjoy the campgrounds and stovepipe village, Sunset Campground has a tailgate party atmosphere perfect for rowdy groups, and romantic sunrises across the park create romance for couples. Don’t forget to track down some of the Valley’s ghost towns—remnants of a booming mining industry that busted. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

LOW-COST,
high-impact UPDATES FOR your home BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
Of course, we’re all running around with our heads cut off mid holiday season. The in-laws will be here in a few weeks, and the last thing we have time, or money, for is home improvement projects. With your sanity in mind, we’ve compiled a few budget-friendly ideas that will transform your space.

101
CREATE AN ACCENT WALL
Of course, there’s no time to dive into an interior re-paint during the holidays, but an accent wall is a quick way to revamp any room. Before you grab an extra paint can from your garage, be sure to decide on which color, material, and wall is best suited for this quick project. Color theory is the perfect place to start. Do you want to open up a narrow hallway? Are you looking to add a splash of sass? If sass is the name of your aim, be sure to choose the farthest or longest wall, and keep in mind that colors like yellow, orange, and red make a wall appear closer than it truly is. Blues, greens, and purples push walls away from the eye, making a skinny hallway seem wider, and a short room feel longer.
REFRESH BACKSPLASH
If you feel your kitchen is a bit drab, a new backsplash can offer a serious facelift—while also protecting your walls against splashes and spills sure to happen this holiday season. Backsplash that contrasts with counter tops is
102

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2016
all the rage, as it allows both surfaces to truly pop. The trending use of porcelain perfectly compliments marble countertops, while calacatta’s enduring, classic marble look is more realistic than ever. Incorporate your personal style and use the backsplash as a way to truly pull your kitchen together, tie in colors, and create a focal point. Because the area covered by backsplash is typically small, be bold and bright, or opt for tiles in different shapes and colors that serve as a statement piece.
ADD A LUXURY SHOWER HEAD
Hosting for the holidays is all about making your company comfortable. If the guest bathroom is lacking in luxury, a quick showerhead update could be the fix. If your father in law stands 6 feet tall, opt for something that won’t force him to hunch over, like a ceiling head unit that peacefully mimics falling rain. If pressure is an issue, there’s a quick fix for that too. From filtered-water to massage setting and hand-held features—today’s latest luxury showerheads have much to offer.

REPLACE YOUR FRIDGE
Of course, more people mean more food! Prep your home with a brand new fridge sure to hold all the leftovers. Refrigerators have been seriously influenced by technology in the last decade, making leaps and bounds in efficiency—with LED screens that can be programed to showcase photo slideshows, hold massive amounts of food, and save on energy. Consider an upgrade if you don’t have easy access to filtered water and have to purchase costly, wasteful water bottles, wish your food would stay fresh longer, or want to reduce your carbon footprint. Plus, a new, shiny, stainless steel fridge can bring some serious style to an old kitchen.
CLEAN YOUR FLOORS AND UPHOLSTERY
Call in a professional to clean your carpets and upholstery, and welcome guests into a home that looks and smells new! Years of foot traffic, spills, and simply living, take a toll—and sometimes more than we even notice. Forget the true hue of your carpet and couch? Now is the perfect time to find out! Improve air quality, eliminate trapped pollutants, take out dust mites, prevent mold, and say hello to super-fresh smells. 104

UPDATE FIXTURES
From faucets, fans, and sinks to your cabinet finish and handles, opting to update one of these features can make a room feel new. Keep cost extremely low by replacing cabinet and drawer handles or faucets in your kitchen and bathrooms. Add a dash of color, enhance a vintage feel, or go for longevity and choose an industrial design sure to keep up with the kids. This small change will make a huge impact! If you’re not yet ready to replace your cabinets, a refresh is the way to go. Remove doors, add shelves, paint with stencils, or hang wallpaper in the back of glass-front cabinets.

UPDATE LIGHTING
Light can certainly bring new life—whether it’s a change in the type, location, or amount, or through statement-piece lamps and fixtures. Studies show the quality of light affects people in many different ways, and a well-lit room is welcoming, habitable, and warm. Bring new light into hosting areas like the living room and kitchen, and freshen up guest rooms with bold drapes and curtains that effortlessly introduce style. Swap out your traditional bulbs for LEDs and reap many benefits. From their long life, lack of toxic materials, and durable quality to zero UV emissions and impressive light disbursement—upgrading from conventional to LED bulbs can be as impactful as your switch from analog to digital.

UPDATE THE AREA RUG
The right rug can transform a room. Is it color, comfort, cleanliness, or style you crave? There’s a rug for that. Cover stubborn floor stains, add warmth, define your space, and keep your little holiday visitors safe. Area rugs define space as they create a mood for your visitors, inviting them to gather around couches in the great room, or hinting that this area is adult-only. The style, color, pattern, and materials of today’s rugs are seemingly endless and can bring unique style. The “over dyed” rug look really took over this last year, stripping vintage and antique rugs of their original color and saturating them in vibrant, contemporary hues.
ADD CROWN MOLDING
Baseboards and crown molding add width, depth, and height to boring rooms through architectural interest. One of the easiest and most affordable ways to make a room feel new is to beef up your moldings — either adding them for the first time, or heightening the trim. Baseboards provide a visual foundation while molding draws the eye upward. If you’re on a tight budget, consider molding made of MDF—a combination of wood and resins that come pre-primed and ready to paint!

ADD CURTAINS
Bring elegance and style to your home with help from window treatments and curtains. You can pull a room together, enhance décor, make a statement, add a dash of color, and the list goes on. Aside from aesthetics, curtains provide privacy, prevent dust, and control light—all features sure to make your guest more comfortable!

Bright Futures Grow in Galt . . . Here, within this friendly and welcoming community, Galt Joint Union High School District serves approximately 2,200 students at two critically-acclaimed high schools. Located only 10 miles north of Lodi and 25 miles from Stockton, our district is readily accessible to families in San Joaquin and Sacramento counties who seek a small, personalized high school setting for their children. Dedicated teachers at the district’s two schools, Liberty Ranch High School and Galt High School, engage each student in a rigorous college and career preparatory curriculum with diverse cocurricular and extracurricular enrichment offerings. Students enjoy personal attention from their teachers at both high schools; each with roughly half the enrollment of others in neighboring districts. Galt Joint Union High School District is committed to three fundamental purposes for all students: 1. Succeed in college, career and civic life; 2. Complete an A-G (college prep) course sequence and at least one career technical education (CTE) pathway; and 3. Achieve a college ready reading Lexile score of 1300+, with each student also growing annual proficiency by at least 100 Lexile points. Towards this mission, we tailor academic programs to the individual. Each student is evaluated for appropriate course placement 114

prior to starting high school and assessed regularly for progress. Students enjoy access to a full array of in-class and online curricula enabling them to choose courses of interest, and they are challenged to accelerate their coursework to participate in dual enrollment at local colleges. Preparation for career success drives the personalization of our career technical offerings. Each student participates in a ten-year planning exercise that begins during freshman year and continues according to a vision that extends six years beyond high school graduation. With this, we completely reconfigure the college readiness paradigm by asking students first to identify a selection of interesting careers. We then work with them to examine the required courses of study and assist in selecting the programs necessary to prepare for bright futures. We help learners to get focused on what they want from life and to develop skills to succeed throughout high school, college, and career entry. Highly fortified with talent and dedication, this educational community works together to ensure amazing outcomes for our students. From our nationally recognized agriculture and engineering programs to very competitive athletic teams, we provide a nurturing environment where values of integrity, personal dignity, and “grit” combine to develop happy and confident graduates.
If you seek a unique, educational environment where your child will have the chance to choose academic and career technical pathways, grow knowledge and develop life skills, while imaging and preparing for success after graduation, we invite you to explore Galt Joint Union High School District. You will experience the differences as you tour our campuses. Students still stop conversations to open doors for visitors, respect each other and staff, and know that high school life is enhanced by engagement and contribution in a spirit of community.

Support from the community has allowed the agency to provide the information, tools and resources that empower and inspire people who are blind or visually impaired to achieve their full potential. An adult confronted with vision loss often feels limited and frustrated in performing a variety of daily activities and requires new techniques and tools to accomplish those activities. Young people who are blind or visually impaired must learn life skills beyond those of a classroom. CCBVI blends educational, social and recreational activities, adaptive techniques and assistive technology, and a nurturing environment with peers to facilitate integration with the sighted world. CCBVI offers services for people of all ages to help them, and their families and friends, cope with vision loss, improve their quality of life, and become or remain independent, participating members of society: • Information/Referral • Braille • Assistive Technology • Orientation & Mobility • Daily Living Skills • Summer Youth Camp • Second Saturdays • Adjustment to Vision Loss • Vision Loss: A Family Affair

Jayleen might only be 3 years old, but she’s already on her way to getting the education she will need to pursue her dreams. That’s because she’s a preschooler at Baby Steps, part of a network providing no-cost preschool and other Head Start and Early Head Start services in the county through Head Start San Joaquin. “I think it’s better that she’s learning early. She actually likes school, so I think that’s a good start for her,” said her mom, Elena. “I hope Jayleen’s successful, and that she follows her heart, whatever she wants to do.” Jaylee’s preschool is helping Elena follow her heart, too. She’s a student at the San Joaquin County Office of Education’s (SJCOE) one.New Start school, which specializes in helping single parents complete high school. Not having to worry about childcare allows teen parents to focus on their own education. Located in downtown Stockton, Baby Steps is operated by the Child Abuse Prevention Council of San Joaquin County. The nonprofit organization is just one of the partners that make up the SJCOE’s Head Start San Joaquin, offering services throughout the county for children from birth to age five and pregnant women. “Research shows that infant, toddler, and preschool children need exposure to high-quality early learning experiences in order to succeed in school and life,” Head Start San Joaquin Director Leticia Sida said. Head Start San Joaquin is currently accepting applications for enrollment in preschool and other services supporting families. 118

YMCA basketball has been part of Tejay’s life for the past year. When his parents signed him up for Y Sports, they expected their child would make some new friends and learn the basic fundamentals. What they didn’t expect was for him to develop a strong passion at such a young age. “Y sports has helped Tejay fall in love with the game of basketball just like his father,” says Frances Lam, “His confidence has gone up and he has become so passionate about the sport. We look forward to game days as a family and we love seeing how much fun he’s having while being active at the same time.” YMCA programs—including day camps, swim lessons and child care—offer fun and enrichment in a safe, nurturing environment. “At the Y, we believe every child has potential, and we’re here to nurture that potential,” Interim CEO Ray Call says. “Every day,
we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that all children, regardless of age, income or background, have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.” Youth Sports is available year-round for kids ages 3 to 17. The Y also offers an Itty Bitty program that teaches the basics of sports in a structured, fun and non-competitive environment for kids ages 3-5

SHORTBREAD JAM COOKIES
Make everyone’s night merrier with layers of flavor! Dip one side of your shortbread cookies in chocolate and choose a cute holiday inspired designed for the other to showcase the apricot, cherry, strawberry, or maybe even blackberry jam you’ve filled into the center!
Terrie Green of Corner Scone Bakery says...
STARTwith the
BASICS
TOP INGREDIENTS
“Real and fresh is definitely best,” she advises. “With no chemicals, if you can. May not have as long of shelf life, but will taste better AND be better for you and your family.” But wait! Before you touch that oven dial or pick up that cookie tray, there’s one problem that Terrie says people run into most often!
PUT THOSE PEEPERS TO WORK
“A common problem is that people don’t read the recipe. You should read through the recipe to understand what is needed, then bake. Baking is science! Period!”
PREP IT UP
“Make sure that before you start, you have all the ingredients and equipment needed for the job.”
PAN THINGS OUT
“At home I use a double walled pan. It helps to evenly brown cookies. And at the bakery, we use large baking trays with parchment paper.”
RACK EM’ JUST RIGHT “Use the middle rack, if you can, and rotate half way through baking for an evenly, perfectly baked batch!”

PERSIMMONS BY COPPER WILLIAMS
There’s definitely a reason why this fruit’s Latin name means “Food of the Gods.” Persimmons are delightfully sweet treats to slip your spoon into when ripened. Originating from China, the persimmon has travelled across the world and split into several variations of itself, including the Japanese, American, and Indian persimmon, to name just a few. Regardless of its slight modifications, persimmons are best eaten when they’ve taken on a completely mushy texture. Think that’s rotten? Think again! Although high in sugar, persimmons boast numerous benefits. Take a bite out of these bad boys and enjoy their antioxidant and vitamin count, including A, C, and Potassium. Its naturally high fiber helps to kick cravings before they can get out of hand, while also promoting healthy digestion. Combine those properties with Betulinic acid, which prevents tumors, Zeaxanthin, which protects your eyes, and Lutein, which combats aging, and you’ve got a super fruit that’s perfect for a plethora of recipes! As with all good things, keep your daily allotment to moderate amounts, as persimmons are high in fructose, and provide a few more calories than your average fruit. Enjoy them in a light salad, alongside gourmet cheese, or go all out and bake them into a delightful holiday cookie for a treat that no one in the family can ignore!

PERSIMMON SORBET INGREDIENTS:
2 cups water 1 cup sugar 2 cups persimmon pulp 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup vodka DIRECTIONS:
To make simple syrup, add water and sugar to a pan and stir to combine. Bring to a boil and boil for 5 minutes. Cool before proceeding with recipe. (Simple syrup can be made ahead of time and refrigerated.) Combine simple syrup, persimmon pulp, lemon juice, and vodka in blender and process until thoroughly blended. Chill mixture. Process in ice cream maker according to manufacturer’s instructions. Serve immediately, or transfer to container(s) and store in freezer. Makes a little more than 1 quart. *Recipe courtesy of MyNewOrleans.com
RAW PERSIMMON TART INGREDIENTS:
3 Persimmons 1 cup dates 1 cup walnuts 1 tbsp. cocoa powder 1 tbsp. desiccated coconut DIRECTIONS:
Add the dates, walnuts, desiccated coconut, cocoa powder into a food processor. Run the processor until everything comes together and walnuts are broken up. Now, dividing this into four portions, place the mixture into non-stick tart cases. Spread them out well to cover the base and the sides of each tart case. Place them in the freezer for at least half an hour and then begin making the filling. Peel the persimmon fruits, chop into cubes and grind them to form a puree in the food processor or blender. Take out the tart cases with the base filled in, from the fridge or freezer. Using a spoon, add the fruit puree to cover the base evenly up to the top. Garnish with more desiccated coconut. Again chill in the fridge/freezer for half an hour and serve! *Courtesy of EasyBitesOnline.com

TWISTED BARREL WINERY Taste the adventure When you’ve got the gumption to think outside the box, things can get a little twisted. And that’s how they like it at Twisted Barrel Winery, where wicked results are expected out of each and every barrel. Owners Verl Tanner, Mark Tanner, and Mike Salimbeni have perfected the art of the bottle, creating specialty blends of Italian and Spanish Varietals. This passion for wine led them to craft their own unique taste on Barbera and Montepulciano, Alicante Bouschet, and Malbec, to name just a few. Their business began back in 2014, but the family and friends behind Twisted Barrel spent decades honing their skill before opening their doors. For them, it’s always been about perfecting each blend, then sharing it with the world. There’s no greater joy for the 128
|
winery, than the smile they get from visitors after every sip. And that’s why—to the delight of guests—many of the movers and shakers of Twisted Barrel make time to visit with their fellow wine aficionados during their sampling. Standing at that bar isn’t just a tasting, it’s an experience. And staffers are only too happy to share their stories with newly made friends as they are with old. “Our tasting room is small, warm, and welcoming,”
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2016
Maxine Tanner explains. “We are a totally family owned and operated winery. Many times, you will find four generations all working or playing together at Twisted Barrel.” That comfort flows throughout the tasting room, from the double glass doors, to floor to ceiling mural of their label. The perfect place for a few selfies, if we might add! French, American, and Hungarian oak are on the menu for every crushed and pressed
grape that comes rolling through the winery’s eager doors. The barrel is the trick in making each batch so twisted, and rich. Aged just right, what was once a juice becomes liquid gold in varietals such as the 2015 Lodi Malbec and the 2014 Tracy Hills Barbera. It’s no surprise that the wine club is so popular—as members receive two bottles per quarter, a 20% discount on all purchases, and a complimentary tasting for three. So do yourself a favor and join the Twisters, for exclusive invitations to parties, events, and much more. Things might be a little twisted, but here in Lodi, we’re up for the challenge.

MALLOW THAN MEETS THE EYE BY COPPER WILLIAMS
Begin with a marshmallow. You know; those bright-white puffballs you hang over an open fire, or watch disappear into your cocoa on a cold night. Now, add the imagination of Heather and Jennifer Frades, sprinkle in an experimental afternoon in the kitchen, three years of experience, dozens of test batches, and voila! You have over 70+ mallow flavors that have become the highlight of parties in San Joaquin. The Rustic Puff, a gourmet marshmallow making business, began in 2013. It’s the brainchild of Jennifer and Heather, and the outcome of inspiration sprouted from a book Jennifer found about creating marshmallows. “She brought it home to me and said she was going to try and make them,” Heather smiles. “I thought she was crazy, but she did, and they were fantastic!” As a wedding and event planner, Jennifer offered the treats as favors and their popularity swelled. The Rustic Puff calls local venues such as StockMarket and Say It With A Box home. More of its rotating inventory can be found online, where customers can make purchases large and small. When asked what their favorite flavors are? “Personally, I love the Peanut Butter Delight and the Buttered Popcorn. I love anything that blends peanut butter and chocolate,” says Heather. Jennifer’s love lies in the Toasted Coconut. “The coconut water gives this marshmallow such a delicious, sweet coconut flavor,” she smiles sweetly. And how are these delightful mallows crafted? It all begins in the kitchen, where the Marshmallow Chef combines a variety of base ingredients according to the mallow flavor. After mixing, boiling, and stirring

But The Rustic Puff doesn’t stop at creating tasty treats! They cater fondue fountains, s’mores bars, and fire pit parties! “Each of the parties can be fully catered, or setup and tore down,” Heather explains. “Our fire pit parties can have two to three hostesses present during the event to keep the fires stoked, and the marshmallows flowing. Or, we can come setup the pits, chairs, tables, and product so that you can enjoy them at your leisure. When the party is over, we come out and clean it all up.” Whether you’re looking to try a unique twist on the mallows you love, buying that perfect date night snack, or prepping www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
