Season’s Greetings! December marks a very exciting milestone for San Joaquin
“He puzzled and puzzled till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas... perhaps... means a little bit more.” —Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Magazine: Our 75th issue! Seventy-five magazines have come and gone: we’ve met a lot of great people, eaten a ton of awesome food, and found out how to live it up in the Central Valley. I am so proud of all our hard work over the years, and can’t wait to start planning the next seventy-five issues, pronto! As you look through the magazine, you may notice that we’ve made a new addition: a Charity Spotlight column. We’ve discovered so many amazing organizations in San Joaquin devoted to helping others and bettering our community, and we think they deserve some recognition. As December is all about the spirit of giving and goodwill toward men, it seemed like the perfect time to make it happen. For our kick-off, we are featuring the Women’s Center of San Joaquin. The organization has been around since the ’70s, and each year they help 22,000 people who struggle with violence and abuse in their homes by offering an array of free, confidential services. Organizations like this show the strength of our community, and that, even when times seem their darkest, kindness still exists in our world. We hope our new column will show these local organizations how grateful we are for their selfless contributions, and inspire our readers to help one another every day. Also in this issue is our holiday feature story: 45 Reasons to Love Winter. We’ve thought long and hard so that even the Grinches out there will find a reason to love the season. Whether it’s hot chocolate at The Dancing Fox or S’mores at Crush Kitchen & Bar (both in Lodi), or snow tubing at Dell’Osso Family Farm in Lathrop, there’s plenty to see and do in San Joaquin to keep you busy until spring has sprung again. As we say goodbye to 2011 and hello to 2012, all of us at San Joaquin mMagazine want to thank you for your continued support. We couldn’t have done seventy-five issues without you, our readers. So here’s to you, cheers! We wish you a holiday filled with good company, warm toes by the fireplace, cookies galore, and all the things that make this time of year so special. Happy Holidays, and see you next year!
Thanks for Reading,
Tony Zoccoli Publisher, San Joaquin magazine

The Art of Happiness: Cindy DeLuz BY KATY BERRY
Courtesy Cindy DeLuz
Even if it’s your first time meeting Stockton’s Cindy DeLuz, speaking with her feels like catching up with an old friend. Her cheerful disposition is infectious, and while browsing her many pieces of art, viewers can clearly see her spirited outlook on life splashed onto canvases with youthful designs, bright colors, inspirational words, sweet creatures, and relaxing scenery. DeLuz prides herself in creating art that makes people feel happy. It’s a simple philosophy, but it’s what has “kept her heart beating” since she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2007. >>

painting more frequently, and even took to redecorating her home. “One side effect of taking dopamine agonists is they make you a little compulsive. Some people get into gambling or online shopping. It’s a trip. Thank God my compulsion is art.” One night DeLuz stayed up all night painting her home to resemble the inside of a vintage camper (much to her family’s surprise), complete with a faux window overlooking a lake. Another night she painted a bakery in her kitchen. Luckily, her husband and daughter have both been supportive of her creative journey. DeLuz worries about whether she will be able to continue painting as the use of her limbs becomes more difficult, but she refuses to let it stop her. “I’ll just have to use my left hand, or my toe, or my teeth. Knowing me I’ll figure out something,” she says. In the meantime, her art keeps her spirits high and her hands busy. She donates work to raise money for Parkinson’s research, including a hand-painted beach cruiser she created for a benefit last May. She’s even acquired an agent and hopes to have her work licensed and sold in more shops. Currently, prints can be purchased on her website, where you can also follow DeLuz’s blog, which chronicles her artistic ventures, her fight against Parkinson’s, and her day-to-day insights. Despite her struggles, DeLuz says her diagnosis has made her appreciate life in a way she hadn’t before. And though she continues to hope for a cure, she wouldn’t go back to life before Parkinson’s.

DECEMBER 2011

Before spending her days as a full-time artist, DeLuz was an esthetician, a job that requires a steady hand. “I opened a skin care salon, and when I was 47 I noticed that my hand was really slow,” says DeLuz. “A friend also noticed that I had stopped swinging my right arm, and that’s one of the first signs.” Other odd symptoms crept up on DeLuz, including the loss of her sense of smell and a weakening of her voice. She went to the doctor thinking her hand problems were the result of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but the fact that her symptoms were painless indicated a neurological problem. “The odd thing is, when you are finally diagnosed, you’ve already had the darn stuff for tenplus years. So when the symptoms show, you’ve only got 20 percent of dopamine-producing cells left in your brain,” says DeLuz. Parkinson’s is a degenerative condition that kills dopaminecells in the brain, weakening the central nervous system. After her diagnosis, DeLuz went through a period of depression, until one day her life took an unexpected turn. “I was at the mall, in my denial stage, three months post diagnosis, and I was walking around pretty heartbroken, thinking, ‘What am I supposed to do with this? Am I going to be able to dance at my daughter’s wedding? Or care for a grandchild?’ I was so caught up in the fear of it,” says DeLuz. At that very moment, a voice popped into her head telling her to paint. Having never painted a day in her life, DeLuz felt confused, but decided to trust her instincts. She went to a dime store and bought a children’s watercolor palette. From there she began creating small images, and found that she was a natural. She graduated to larger pieces,

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, each year, fire departments across the country respond to an average of 260 house fires caused by Christmas trees. Here are a few safety tips to consider when putting up your holiday tree this season. —Katy Berry
• Choose a tree that is fresh with green, firm needles. Grab the trunk and shake the tree to test it. If the needles fall off, move along. • Make sure you place the tree at least three feet away from heat sources including radiators, lights, candles, and fireplaces. Do not block any exits with your tree. • Add water to the tree daily since dry trees are quick to catch on fire. • Make sure your light strands are meant for indoor trees. Do not use outdoor-only lights. For small lights, do not connect more than three sets together. For screw-in bulbs, do not use more than fifty bulbs. • Always turn off your tree before going to bed or leaving the house.
For more information : When Christmas is over, dead, dried-out trees are a major fire hazard. You can find a list of local tree recycling programs on San Joaquin County’s Solid Waste Division website: sjgov.org/solidwaste or by calling (209) 468-3000.

Sue Lomolino Face and Body Painter, Tracy
Tracy local Sue Lomolino has been in the face painting business for eleven years as owner of The Other Cheek Face Painting and Balloon Creations. Two years ago, she started The Other Cheek Body Shop, which focuses on body painting, and theatrical and special effects makeup. Sue tells us what it’s like using paints to get up-close and personal with people. —compiled by Kate Donahue
What face painting designs are you most often asked to create for kids? Boys like full-faced skeletons and monsters. Girls tend to like full butterfly fairy masks. Boys and girls both like vampires. When they get in my chair, I ask, “What do you want to be?” and “How do you want to feel?” Most people think face painting is for little kids, but I do a lot of ‘grown up’ type parties, for example, a Cirque de Soleil or Mardi Gras theme. It’s a lot of fun for teenagers and grownups too. What are the strangest designs you’ve been asked to create? A two-headed giraffe on someone’s arm, a rocket ship garbage can on someone’s cheek, a blue squirrel named Homer, and a store.
How do you keep on top of new developments in your industry? I still continue to learn and attend workshops and conventions. I want to add an airbrush to give myself another tool to use. I get bored easily so I’m constantly pushing myself, which to me is the fun part. What is your favorite part about The Other Cheek Body Shop? My favorite part is I get to do something that I imagine. I only create that design once. It’s always fresh, new, and exciting. What if someone is nervous about having their body painted? Body paint doesn’t have to be headto-toe nudity. It’s amazing how I can manipulate shadows and colors to bring out the most flattering parts of someone’s body. What new projects are you working on? Right now I’m working on a multicultural body painting book with Connie Barding, a photographer who owns The Photographic Art Studio in Tracy. I plan on painting traditional interpretations of countries on models. Japan and Mexico are done. The model depicting Mexico is painted with an Aztec theme, and Japan is a Geisha. I want to show the roots of cultures. It’s called “Born Naked,” because regardless of culture, we’re all born naked.

When did you get into the face painting business? I credit the very, very first inkling of wanting to do this when I was on the Board of Directors with the McHenry House. At a fundraising event, a face painter had a long line, so I asked, “Do you need any help?” I loved it. After, I called my best friend Miss Sparkles the Clown. She brought me makeup and brushes. I have a background in art, my father was a sign painter and cartoonist, so I grew up with a brush in my hand.

HoliDAZ E BY KATY BERRY
The holidays are an emotional time, and we often expect too much of ourselves. Wanting to do everything and be everywhere at once can sometimes be a recipe for a blowout. Money may be tight and in-laws may be opinionated, but you shouldn’t have to lose your cool. We spoke to licensed marriage and family therapist, Anita Freyman-Danielson, to find out common reasons why people get the holiday blues, and how to keep the cheer this year. »
Stress Attack: Money Many parents remember being kids when Santa would come and leave what seemed like a mountain of gifts under the tree. Try as we might to hold on to that magic, it just doesn’t translate once you’re an adult. In this economic climate, it’s much harder for people to buy gifts for everyone in the family, yet the hype to shop escalates more each year. “For adults, to lavish a lot of gifts on people who already have stuff, that becomes something that can be negotiated,” says FreymanDanielson. “If you have young adults in the family who are struggling to make ends meet, spending money on ten people is unrealistic.” Chances are you’re not the only one feeling wary of the holiday shopping hype, so speak up. Consider setting a reasonable spending limit in your family, or establishing a Secret Santa gift exchange. Focus instead on doing something meaningful as a family and creating a new memory. Ten years down the road, no one will remember the ‘stuff’ they got for Christmas in 2011, but they will remember how they spent the time with their family.
Stress Attack: Dealing with Change Kids get married, families expand, parents split-up, living situations flip-flop, and as we struggle with these transitions, we become fiercely defensive of our holiday traditions. It’s okay to cherish them: Traditions are important identity markers and they bring families together. But the key to getting through the holidays is learning to adapt. There are some traditions you’ll always be able to keep with you, like the way you decorate the tree, or the cookies you bake. But you may need to accept new ones, whether that means letting your mother-in-law make her turkey stuffing, or passing down some of your previous responsibilities to the younger generation. According to Freyman-Danielson, the important thing is to assume nothing. Some people may find something as simple as sending out Christmas cards an emotionallycharged subject; others may not care at all. So be flexible, be open to negotiating, and be honest with your feelings. You may have to let some things go, but you might acquire a new tradition that’s even better.
Stress Attack: Loss of a Loved One Whether your marital status has changed, you’ve moved away from friends or family, or you’ve experienced the death of someone dear, the holidays can be difficult for those who’ve recently experienced loss. The important thing is to take care of you, first. “Pick one aspect of the holiday that is still doable, but under no circumstances are you obligated to do it all, and that’s particularly true for people who are grieving,” says Freyman-Danielson. “People need permission to take care of themselves if they have a hard time managing when they’re really hurting.” If you don’t feel like you can handle any get-togethers, then let your family know you’ll be sitting this year out. Most people will understand, and if they don’t then that’s too bad.

The
Women’s Center of San Joaquin County BY KATY BERRY
In 1975, eight local women with a meager budget of $275 wanted to create a space in the community where they could gather to discuss common interests and goals. In 1976, the center became incorporated as the Women’s Center Coalition, which focused on helping develop the workforce for low-income women and creating awareness against domestic violence. In the 1980s, the center became a major resource for victims of domestic and sexual abuse in San Joaquin County. Since then, the Women’s Center of San Joaquin County has continued to grow. Today it is the sole certified provider of domestic violence and sexual assault services in the county and helps over 22,000 women, children, and men each year. The center has three offices in Stockton, Tracy, and Lodi, along with two safe houses where battered women are received and given shelter, food, clothing, and support. The center’s comprehensive list of services includes a 24-hour crisis help line, emergency shelters, safety planning, counseling and support groups, court accompaniment, advocacy services, case management, parenting classes, and more. All the programs are free, confidential, and available to anyone in crisis. The agency also offers

its services in a variety of languages including Spanish, Laotian, Thai, Khmu, Hmong, Urdu, Hindi, Farsi, and Pashtu. Throughout the year, the Women’s Center holds many events to raise funds, spread awareness, and educate the community about domestic violence and sexual abuse. In the spirit of the holiday season, the center is gearing up for its annual Adopt-a-Family program. Since many of the women who come to the shelters have little besides the clothes on their backs, this program relies on the generosity of the community to share gifts with families living in the shelters so they too can experience the joy of the holiday season. If you’re interested in adopting a family this year, contact Lecia Harrison at (209) 948-0978 for more information. [SJM]

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE
Ellis, California may not ring a bell with many residents of San Joaquin County today, yet it was a key community in the development of our area. The town’s birth and destruction, like many in the West, is tied with the railroad. Central Pacific (now Southern Pacific) completed a rail line in 1869 from Sacramento through Stockton over the Altamont, and then on to San Francisco by ferries. The area between Stockton and the Altamont quickly morphed into several prominent rail towns. The first to spring up was Lathrop Junction. It served the needs of the railroad employees so well that it soon developed into the headquarters for Central Pacific in the county. The quick evolution of Lathrop Junction alerted Central Pacific to the needs of a local coaling station, as well. They settled on an area at the base of Altamont pass, about 14 miles west of Lathrop Junction— this station became the town of Ellis. It provided the trains with the ability to refuel and collect supplies, allowing the trains to travel further. Many settlers scattered throughout the area saw Ellis as an up-and-coming town and moved here in order to participate in the development. Many of the settlers came from a small settlement founded in 1861 called Wickland, leaving it all but abandoned.
By 1870, Ellis was booming by western standards. It now included 45 to 50 buildings responsible for serving the diverse needs of the area. The town thrived for 8 years until Central Pacific made the decision that a new line was needed. The railroad constructed a line 3 miles east of Ellis that connected more efficiently than the previous passage. The novelty of the line was that it avoided the Altamont hills when headed to San Francisco, allowing for faster traveling time. It also allowed a line extending to Southern California. The new line led to the creation of the community of Tracy in 1878. Tracy’s successful new railroad caused Central Pacific to abandon Ellis. The community did not die out however; it simply moved, some to Lathrop Junction but many more to the newly developed Tracy. Today the town of Ellis, like the settlement of Wickland is all but lost from history, another causality of the railroad’s ability to create or abandon communities. However, it lives on in the origins and the continued development of the town that took its place, Tracy.

bare ranch A gem among the vines:
by Michael David Winery
by KATY BERRY
Surrounded by 180 acres of sprawling vineyards in Lodi Wine Country, Bare Ranch is the relatively new venue purchased by Michael David Winery in 2007. Though the property was originally acquired for its grapes, Michael and David Phillips got an extra perk in the six-bedroom home built on-site in 1903 by former owner, John Boyce. At the time of his death in 1913, he was known as one of the wealthiest and most prominent farmers in the area. His wife, Emma, sold the property to the Bare Family in 1918, hence the name Bare Ranch. The land operated under the Bare Family as an agricultural enterprise, which included Bare Fruit Company and the winery Rancho del Oso. >>

The large, two-story Craftsman style house has been remodeled over time, though the Phillips family has tried to preserve the architectural integrity of the home to the best of their ability. The home is only used for private family and business purposes, but its elegant and welcoming façade make it part of the reason why Bare Ranch is an ideal backdrop for Wine Country weddings and other local events that wish to showcase the remote beauty found in San Joaquin. All events at Bare Ranch are held outside, so the property is only available between May and October. Landscaping renovations made in 2007 created a romantic European style throughout the property. The driveway is a long dirt road shaded by arching tree branches, with acres of wine grapes
60

sprawling out on either side. In the parking lot, a stone archway with a wrought-iron gate beckons you to enter the property. The walk towards the front yard transports the visitor to another place and time, along a winding stone path surrounded by rich, luscious foliage; flowering plants are covered in butterflies. A stream winds on either side of the path, babbling with small waterfalls. Strolling down this walkway is like entering a scene in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, even more enticing when illuminated with twinkling lights in the evening. For any event, this short, whimsical jaunt to the property sets the tone for a memorable evening. In the front yard of the home sits a grand fountain, also added during renovations.
This is one of three sites where couples can say their vows; the second is in the front yard underneath an arch of tree branches facing the home. The backyard is also an ideal setting, as it boasts a stone altar with rustic wine barrels on either side and a large wooden awning overhead. Cement and stone work was added throughout the property during the renovations, modeled after the original design of the home and the style associated with the early 1900s. Stone pillars also welcome guests to a pool area. The inground pool is not open for guests to take a dip, but the area is beautiful for hosting a cocktail hour, especially in the evening when lighted, floating fountains create a spectacle for guests. The cement work is
DECEMBER 2011
also an ode to Michael and David Phillips’ grandfather, who was a cement mason. Between the altar and the pool area is a large grassy knoll, the backdrop of which is rows upon rows of grape vines that stretch out beyond a low-rise stone and cement wall. Here, a large tent accommodates guests. The property can hold as many as 350 people, but is also perfect for an intimate gathering. Whether a bride and groom are looking for a spectacularly ornate soiree, or a simple, country wedding, Bare Ranch can accommodate both. “We’ve had a wedding use tons of flowers and tall candelabras… We’ve also had a vintage wedding that included an antique typewriter welcoming guests and an old fashioned tea cart with miniature jars of honey as favors,” says Lori Phillips, event and facility manager at Bare Ranch. “It’s really about creating the wedding that each couple envisions, rather than having a cookie cutter of each. We encourage people to personalize the grounds with décor to fit their style and budget.” Another perk: Since Bare Ranch is still a relatively new venue, booking does not require years of advance notice. In fact, Lori Phillips says some brides have booked the ranch only three months prior to their big day—a fact that’s bound to change over time as the venue becomes more well-known. Bare Ranch is romantic and full of personality; it has a historic flare, and caters to a variety of tastes. For those who want to get away from it all, Bare Ranch is truly a gem, hidden among the vines of Lodi.

Think About It: Most wealthy investors here in San Joaquin County have their money parked in funds where money is made when these assets go up in value or lose money when the value goes down. This is also called “The Long only strategy.” Long only strategies are good when markets are going up but they are not so good otherwise, especially as retirement age approaches. Although the domestic equity market is bullish at the moment, the debt market is in trouble, especially the public debt of states and municipalities. The University Plaza Waterfront Hotel, formerly known as the Lexington, is under new ownership and has received a complete facelift—including the addition of a new 48-seat restaurant, the Delta Bistro. I Restaurant Spotlight
Photos by Matthew James Photography
The restaurant itself overlooks the Plaza’s outdoor lawn area, complete with stylish wicker lawn chairs, orange and brown umbrellas to evoke the University of the Pacific’s school spirit, and a palm-treesurrounded pool area that lights up once the sun sets. Dining is available outdoors as well; the space is especially ideal for larger gatherings and can accommodate up to 300 people. Inside, the restaurant is decorated in cool tones of blue, green, black, and white, which represent the Bistro’s waterfront appeal, and contrast nicely with the bold color palette outdoors. Delta Bistro has sleek, modern décor but a laid-back atmosphere which helps make everyone feel welcome—a necessity for a hotel restaurant which must accommodate everyone, from college student families to mayoral luncheons. The menu for the Delta Bistro was created by head chef Jeff Stogsdill. Seven years ago Stogsdill was the district manager of U-Haul, but quit to pursue his passion for the culinary arts. He eventually came to work for the Lexington and was quickly promoted to head chef. When the Lexington Waterfont Hotel became the University Plaza, Stogsdill was asked to create the Delta Bistro’s menu from top to bottom. One of the first things he did was create a selection of fresh seafood

fare, something not often seen in Stockton restaurants. “We’re all about water, we have a beautiful waterfront view, and we didn’t have one piece of fish on the menu,” says Stogsdill. “I’m a fish guy. I absolutely love fish, the fresher the better. It was a perfect fit, to me, to have someone sitting outside on a beautiful evening eating fish so fresh that it was in the water yesterday. That was my vision and I think that’s what I’ve done.” Stogsdill’s favorite dish is the halibut: hand cut, quickly sautéed, and finished in the oven with a butter, lemon, and thyme sauce. All the fish is flown overnight from Alaska, and is hand-filleted by Stogsdill and his team. Other notable menu items include Stogsdill’s sensational crab cakes, made with snow crab, lightly breaded, and served with homemade tartar sauce; garlic shrimp served on crostini; hand-cut beef filets with a flavorful bleu cheese sauce and crispy onions; and his signature dish, the chicken Jerusalem with a rich artichoke mushroom cream sauce. Many of the entrées are served aside fresh, local vegetables. Stogsdill is committed to positively representing Stockton by including as many fresh, local ingredients in his dishes as he can. Many of the dishes are served with a side of fresh asparagus spears that have been
quickly blanched, drizzled with local olive oil, and sprinkled with salt and pepper. Stogsdill’s food philosophy is that of simplicity. “I don’t do a lot with it. I do my little twists, but whenever possible I try to get something nice and fresh and just do it simple,” he says. Beside the restaurant is a full bar with several choices of microbrews, local wines, and liquor. Stogsdill says he thinks it’s unfortunate that Stockon has a “bad rap,” and he loves having such a wealth of local ingredients to work with at the Bistro each day. With its new renovations, menu, and beautiful location, the hotel is a shining example of the best Stockton has to offer.

Wine Picks
L o c a l L od i
Lodi keeps the Merlot faith
Vicarmont Winery’s commitment to the grape we once loved most BY RANDY CAPAROSO This month's picks from the Lodi Wine and Visitor Center
How soon we forget. Not too long ago, Merlot was the go-to wine for the majority of America’s red wine drinkers: what Chardonnay was to Bridget Jones, and white Russians to the Big Lebowski. Then this varietal suffered the indignity of being disparaged in the movie Sideways in 2007, and soon after, became decidedly unhip. Yet good grapes are good grapes, and Merlot still makes a terrific wine.
Yet how many of Lodi’s 75 or so specialty wineries even produce a varietal Merlot? Apart from Vicarmont, surprisingly few. Understandably, Zinfandel rules the roost in Lodi because it is, after all, the region’s heritage grape: it’s the enduring link to the families that originally settled here, and it is their descendents who continue to farm most of Lodi’s vineyards and own the majority of the region’s existing wineries.
At least no one has ever had to tell Vic Mettler what is plain as day: that Merlot is a grape of peerless pedigree, no matter what the fickle dictates of fashion. Twenty years ago, Mettler committed his 40-acre Locust Tree Vineyard to Merlot, on a property belonging to his side of the multistrand Mettler family since the turn of the last century. Sticking with the grape, Mettler’s bottlings under his Vicarmont Vineyards label have been consistent medal winners since their first official vintage in 2005.
Zinfandel enthusiasts are now legion because, no doubt, the grape appeals to the hedonism in us all. They say that Pinot Noir appeals to sensualists, and Cabernet Sauvignon to the effete aesthetes. Merlot, on the other hand, has never been associated with any such affectations. In its heyday, Merlot was never a grape requiring a doctorate to decipher, yet has never taken a backseat to, say, Zinfandel or Pinot Noir when it comes to pure, unadulterated drinkability. A wellmade Merlot is never something you have to think twice about.
The 2008 Vicarmont Lodi Merlot ($20), for instance, is a paragon of plump, plush, black cherry and cedar box sensations, with plenty of long, sinewy, sexy leg showing through velvet textures, happily landing on a chocolate bar. Mettler speaks more plainly about his wine, saying, “I like the soft, smooth, fruit-focused style of wine that Merlot gives you, and the way it allows the taste of Lodi fruit to come through.” LangeTwins Vineyards winemaker David Akiyoshi also knows a thing or two about Merlot, recently taking the time to recollect his prior career as longtime winemaker for Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi. “Thirty years ago there was virtually no Merlot to speak of here in Lodi. But once we got started, the versatility of the region began to prove itself.” Today, Lodi crushes over 90,000 tons of Merlot each year. That’s about 30 percent of California’s entire crush—and for the record, more than five times more than all of Napa County. Adds Akiyoshi, “You can grow almost any high-quality wine grape when you have high quality climate and soils. Merlot grows well in Lodi for the same reason Zinfandel does well—quality always finds a home.”
92
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE
To capture that Merlot, according to Mettler, it’s a matter of reducing crop to bring the fruit/canopy ratios on vertical trellises into better balance; and then being patient, waiting for “that grassy flavor in the grape to disappear, and the taste of Merlot to come out.” That’s the advantage of “estate” growers like Mettler, who live and work in the middle of their own vineyards: they can wait for the exact moment to pick their grapes, when they’ve reached a peak of flavor. Even so, says Grands Amis Winery winemaker Roger Nicholas, “I often have to twist people’s arms to get them to taste our Merlot.” Nicholas makes his own estate-grown dandy: a velvety smooth and bright Merlot of sweet disposition, with its own leggy grip and husky sensuality. “The grape has lost so much of its cachet, but it doesn’t mean it’s lost any of the qualities that made it popular in the first place. Of course, once I get them to try it, they always love it.”
Randy Caparoso is the award winning sommelier/restaurateur and longtime wine journalist who also pens the blog for the Lodi Winegrape Commission’s lodiwine.com. To taste over 200 Lodi wines, visit the Lodi Wine and Visitor Center, 2545 W. Turner Rd, Lodi, (209) 367-4727, lodiwine, com

Wine Tours and Tastings
The Lodi winemaking industry has enjoyed tremendous expansion in the last decade. The land devoted to vineyards has increased from 46,000 acres in 1996, to nearly 100,000 today. Now the region produces more fine wine than Napa and Sonoma combined! The Lodi appellation is proudly blowing away the mists of anonymity that have shrouded local wines, allowing them to bask in the sunshine of worldwide recognition. We invite you to take a short ride and discover Lodi Wine Country for yourself.

What’s In Season
Fresh Pappardelle with Cremini, Shiitake, and Chanterelle Mushroom Ragu 1 lb. pappardelle pasta 1-1½ lbs. cremini, shiitake, and chanterelle mushrooms (equal amounts of each) 1-1½ cups marsala wine 2 cups vegetable stock
TASTE OF THE SEASON
CHANTERELLE MUSHROOMS BY KATY BERRY
1 onion, chopped 4 garlic cloves, chopped ¼ cup cream 1 Tbsp. butter ½ cup flat leaf Italian parsley, chopped Parmesan cheese Olive oil Salt and pepper Put a pot of salted water on the stove and bring to a boil. Clean the mushrooms by taking a damp towel and rubbing off any dirt. Remove stems from the cremini and shiitake mushrooms and slice into ¼ inch slices. Peel the chanterelles (you’ll see they easily peel without a knife). Dice the onion and the garlic. Over medium-high heat, add a lug of olive oil and the onions. Cook until soft. Add the mushrooms and garlic and cook until browned (about 8-10 minutes). Add the marsala
The chanterelle mushroom is coveted by fungi enthusiasts. During the winter season, the golden chanterelle and the yellow-foot chanterelle are most commonly found growing in the wild forests of the Pacific Northwest. These tasty ‘shrooms vary in size depending on their geographical location. Some East Coast varieties grow only to the size of a thumb, whereas here in the west they can become as large as two hands. Whichever size one might prefer, they are all delicious. Chefs and foodies alike salivate over these flavorful and aromatic mushrooms, which smell surprisingly similar to apricots. No one has nailed down the technique of commercially cultivating these mushrooms, which may be why markets sell them for a pretty price. However, many people enjoy hunting for chanterelles in the wild, where they can be found springing up beneath second-growth fir trees and ferns. They are a great mushroom for beginner mushroom hunters, and are generally easy to identify by their golden color, fruity scent, and trumpet-like shape. They also tend to grow back relatively quickly in the same spot, so if you find a chanterelle hotbed, it’s likely you’ll be able to return a few months later for more. Chanterelles are moist and soft, and their flavor has a mildly fruity base, with a peppery edge that’s strong enough to stand out in a number of dishes. Though chanterelles are becoming more widely available in markets, they’re always free when picked in the wild, and hunting for them is a fun way to spend the day outdoors.

wine and cook until reduced (about 5 minutes.) Add the stock. Cook for about 15-20 minutes until reduced. Continue to let the sauce reduce until you are satisfied with the flavor. Add salt and pepper to taste. When happy with the sauce, drop the pasta into the boiling water. Chop your parsley and add cream to the sauce. Add butter. When the pasta is al dente, transfer it to the sauce. Do not drain the pasta, as the excess water will help thicken the sauce. Let it cook for several more minutes. Sprinkle most of the parsley over the pasta, keep some for a garnish. Shave some Parmesan cheese over the pasta. Mix it all to combine. Serve topped with parsley, Parmesan, and a drizzle of olive oil. Recipe and photo courtesy of Stephen Cusato, thefoodfreak.com

Isadore’s is anything but humble: the kitchen is out-of-this-world, and they know it. In fact, if you happen to inquire, they’ll gladly tell you which items on the menu you’re sure to fall in love with. Locals swear by the quality of the seafood and madeto-order pasta selections. Though there’s no official children’s menu, the kitchen will gladly whip up a pint-sized meal for your munchkins, as well as accommodate any other special requests. Finally, don’t be shy—order the Sex in a Pan for dessert. Sweet, ripe banana slices and rich chocolate pudding on a crumbly cookie crust topped with real whipped cream and chocolate sauce make for a climactic end to any meal. Kelley Brothers Brewing Company

LUCILLE’S
Bloody Mary Mix Gary Duquette has long been a lover of Bloody Marys, a fondness passed down from his mother, Lucille. Always looking to enjoy the perfect Bloody Mary, Gary often concocted his own with a delicate blend of spices and other ingredients with his wife, Rose Marie. Several years ago, when the couple took a vacation to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, they found that they were unable to find any of the staple ingredients in their Bloody Marys—it took them three days just to find celery salt. Gary realized that what the world needed was a dry Bloody Mary seasoning that would be delicious, portable, and long-lasting. Over the next nine months, he went to work combining spices to create the perfect mix, eventually coming up with three flavors: San Francisco mild, New Orleans nippy, and Cajun hot. Gary and Rose Marie got positive reviews while taste testing their product at farmers markets in Stockton and Lodi, and so they went into business, naming the product after Gary’s mother. Lucille’s Bloody Mary Mix comes in several sizes and is easy to use. Just mix one tablespoon of the mix with sixteen ounces of tomato juice and vodka for the perfect cocktail. And the seasoning is also great for cooking when rubbed on meat or fish. Lucille’s is available at many local gourmet food and gift shops, restaurants, and markets. —K.B. Even with just a sprinkling of powdered sugar, this cake will look festive at any holiday gathering. —K.B.
This downtown restaurant, open since 1975, is a classic eatery where the food is as eclectic as the diners. Mothers with their toddlers settle in next to prominent businessmen in ties for everything from a sturdy American burger to Greek souvlaki. Don’t be intimidated by the Greek side of the menu or the local luminaries—souvlaki is simply the Grecian version of shish kebab, served on pita bread, and at Yasoo Yani, everyone gets the same fine family service. Don’t even get us started on the honeydrenched baklava for dessert.
TRACY Johnny’s Diner & Creamery
1005 E. Pescadero Ave., Tracy, (209) 832-1188 Open for lunch and dinner. $
A trip to Johnny’s Diner and Creamery in Tracy is like a trip back in time to the 1950s. Filled with pictures of classic cars, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, and an old fashioned ice cream counter, Johnny’s is the perfect place to share one of their thick milkshakes with a date, or take the kids for a fun night out. The menu boasts tons of all-American favorites like the “Juicy-Lucy,” two hamburger patties grilled together with cheese melted in the middle, the Philly cheese steak, a grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough bread, or a big basket of fried zucchini. Be sure to leave room for one of their enormous, signature ice cream sundaes. Magellan’s

Magellan’s Restaurant, named after owner and Executive Chef Thomas Magellan, is much like the small, intimate restaurants found in San Francisco. Featuring American Continental cuisine, the menu choices range from duck salad to their salmon burger to the ever popular, delectable filet mignon. The menu changes seasonally and the high level of noise found in some restaurants is not to be found here. If you are looking for a good traditional meal with peaceful ambiance, seafood specials, and a martini bar to put others to shame, then Magellan’s is the place.
Thai Café

More practical than fussy, Thai Café is the place to go when the craving for good Thai food, fast, strikes. This little place manages to stay afloat despite some stiff competition from surrounding restaurants, perhaps in part to a large following of loyal customers. Regulars rave about the Thai Chicken Salad and Salad Kai, but if you are in the mood for something a little heavier, go ahead and try the Koa Paad—deep-fried rice served with your choice of meats. The colorful Thai decorations set the mood for a fun and flavorful meal where everyone is welcome. Tracy Thai

Tracy Thai successfully captures the unique and complex flavors Thai food is famous for. Tracy Thai prepares imaginative creations for those with adventurous tastes, and also familiar favorites for those who have never experienced Thai food before. The Great Plate
