Award winning heart care saveslives. lives. Innovative cardiac care saves

I’m living proof. proof.

Chris Ranuio Heart attack survivor

St. Joseph’s Award Winning Heart Care #1 in State for Interventional Coronary Care Top 10% in U.S. for Cardiac Surgery CARECHEX® A Quality Rating Service of The Delta Group.

(209) 943 2000 StJosephsCares.org/Heart 1800 N. California St., Stockton, CA 95204

Perhaps Buffy sensed something was about to happen. Chris Ranuio’s faithful friend refused to budge from the groomer’s storefront, so Chris found himself carrying his 90-pound golden retriever across a big parking lot. As soon as he sat in his truck, a violent chest pain told him something was severely wrong. Chris was having a heart attack. When paramedics arrived, they transmitted Chris’s EKG reading straight to St. Joseph’s emergency department en route, so that when Chris arrived, the cardiac team was ready. Chris’s blockage was cleared in just 28 minutes. St. Joseph’s heart attack response rates are consistently better than the national standard. In the race to restore blood flow in the heart, minutes can save lives. When a heart attack strikes, St. Joseph’s is ready.

PUBLISHER'S NOTE

Bidding Adieu to 2012 Here we are, at the end of 2012. It’s been a year of change and—dare I say—growth here at San Joaquin Magazine. We’ve said our goodbyes to team members and welcomed new faces, visited new proprietors and bid farewell to businesses who have closed their doors. I’m sure most of you would agree that it’s been one heck of a year, for this magazine and for us all. So as we see this year come to a close, we cannot help but wonder what the next will bring. In the spirit of our hope and excitement for the new year, we have a feature on 25 ways to give 2013 a proper welcome. Whether you’re looking for a quiet night with the family or a big, all-night bash, we have literally

“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.” -TS Eliot

dozens of suggestions to make this New Year’s a memorable one. Of course, we can’t talk about December without bringing up Christmas, and we have plenty of stories to get you in the spirit, from a look at Christmases past to our all-local gift guide for last minute shopping to some adventurous gift ideas for the thrill-seekers in your life. Don’t miss our Rocky Mountains getaway, filled with plenty of tips to make the most out of your winter wonderland vacation, whether you’re looking to hit the slopes or would rather cool your heels in the lodge and sip hot chocolate. And, since Christmas is the time to give, not just get, this month’s charity spotlight is on Goodwill, an organization that spends the whole year encouraging people to give. For over ten years, we’ve been doing our best to paint San Joaquin County in a positive light, and will keep doing the same in 2013. We wouldn’t have so much to write about without you, the people who make San Joaquin strong and defy the statistics and the news reports. Though we don’t know what the next year will bring, we know that it will be great because our readers and our community will refuse to be anything less. So, let’s keep our heads high and welcome this new year with our friends and loved ones. Let’s raise our glasses high on December 31 and toast whatever the future may hold.

Happy holidays to all, and see you in 2013!

Decorating the Christmas tree is easily one of the best parts of the holiday season. No matter how much struggle and, ahem, colorful language may accompany picking out the tree and trying to make it fit in the living room (or dragging it out of storage and putting it together - artificial trees are no walk in the park), once it’s all set up and ready to decorate, even the staunchest Scrooge will feel a little twinge of the ‘ole Christmas spirit. No matter how frantic all the shopping, party planning, cooking may get, stringing popcorn and hanging bulbs with your closest family and friends is a perfect way to slow down and actually enjoy the season.

trends and buying new ornaments, culminating in a week-long trip to Atlanta to plan and strategize the next year’s themes. For 2012, coppers are a favorite metallic hue, along with dark, bordello reds. Fanciful colors and designs are also in. “Everyone’s got a little bit of this whimsical look, with punches of color like pinks and blues,” says Rick. Rick and Jeff’s own tree is typically an eclectic mix of ornaments they’ve gathered through the years, including an ornament Rick got from his first grade teacher. For families whose collection of ornaments is based around treasured favorites, the pair suggests simple tricks to dress up the tree - adding different textures like ribbons can give a greater feeling of depth, and using large items that aren’t ornaments - you’ll find watering cans on the gardening tree in the store, for example - can amp up the decor. No matter how you deck your halls, Rick and Jeff definitely encourage embracing plants. “A tree always brings Christmas into the home, even if it’s a fake little tabletop tree in the kitchen,” says Jeff. He also suggests saving cuttings from live trees to hang around the

No one knows the magic of putting a Christmas tree together like Rick Ladd and Jeff Gibson, owners of With Garden Flair in Stockton. For eight years now, the pair has been decking out trees for the holiday season and showing how to decorate with, well, flair. “We do about nine trees every year. Each tree is themed,” Rick explains. This year’s themes include new variations on their old favorites, like the Santa tree, the boy and girl trees, the overthe-top gold, silver, and platinum tree, and, of course, the garden tree. They’re also trying out a few new trends- one of their trees is aimed at the jet-setters, or at least those who dream of jet-setting, and is covered in travel-themed ornaments like the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, a London phone box, and the Blood Church in Russia. “That sounds bad, but it’s a beautiful building,” Rick says. Another newfor-this-season theme is their “first frost” tree, filled with greens, whites, and silvers, more like that first kiss of frost than heavy winter snow. For anyone looking to amp up their style this season, Rick and Jeff have plenty of helpful tips. They spend about a year researching

house to help bring in the holiday smells and feel. Jeff, who grew up in Stockton, remembers going to Breuner’s Furniture as a kid to see their animatronics displays, and keeps that in mind when getting With Garden Flair ready for the holidays. “We know we’ve done a good job if we can see fingerprints on the windows about three feet high,” he says. On top of the lavish trees and decorations, shoppers and curious passer-bys can comb through the stocking stuffer table, filled with unique, kitschy, and vintage style

trinkets, or pick up gifts for party hosts and co-workers that are more fun than the typical bottle of wine that let’s be honest - was probably re-gifted in the first place. While you’re out running your holiday errands stop in, or at least peek through the windows, and check out Rick and Jeff’s beautiful work.

Foster for the

Holidays

BY JESSICA CLARE

The holidays can be a lonely time—not just for humans, but for shelter-bound dogs and cats, as well. The Animal Rescue of Tracy and Petfinder.com are looking to bring a little joy into the lives of these furry orphans by inviting people to join their “Foster a Lonely Pet for the Holidays” program. Families can take care of a cat or dog until the Animal Rescue is able to find a permanent home. Any vet care or supplies needed will be provided, so foster families need only offer shelter and a little love to these displaced animals until they’ve been adopted. The Animal Rescue of Tracy is hoping to place as many pets as they can into foster homes by December 21, so call them quick if you’re willing to volunteer your home and some companionship to a dog or cat this Christmas. If you’d like a permanent addition to the family, check out adoptable animals at petfinder.com.

Sky Tours BY MICHELE BIRD

Have you ever gazed at the night sky and wished you could have a better view than what the naked eye can provide? Sky Tours at Delta is giving the people of San Joaquin County a chance to observe the stars and planets first hand and close up. Each month, Sky Tours at Delta invites a mix of astronomy amateurs and fans to view the night sky through telescopes at San Joaquin Delta College’s Shima 2 parking lot. People who attend Sky Tours at Delta have the opportunity to observe the Moon, Jupiter, globular clusters, and the Andromeda Galaxy. Normally, Sky Tours at Delta hosts its monthly event on a day closest to the first quarter moon. In addition to the monthly events, Sky Tours at Delta also hosts Astronomy in the Park during the months of April through October at Oak Grove Regional Park in Stockton. Astronomy in the Park typically draws in at least four hundred people, according to Stockton Astronomical Society member and Sky Tours at Delta volunteer Doug Christensen. Astronomy in the Park also gives science enthusiasts the chance to observe the night sky through various telescopes provided by Stockton Astronomical Society members. Both events are free to the public and Sky Tours at Delta also works with schools by appointment. “Sky Tours at Delta hopes to promote the idea of science and give people a little bit more understanding of it,” said Christensen. BOUTIQUE SPOTLIGHT

SENSUALLY SPOILED ROTTEN BY JESSICA CLARE

Do you know the difference between a corset and a bustier? Can you tell a babydoll from a chamise? If not, don’t worry - Lori Casas, owner of Sensually Spoiled Rotten, is happy to explain. Her philosophy is simple; she just wants a store where every woman can feel comfortable and find the things to pamper themselves, regardless of age or size. “This has been my dream for a long time,” Casas explains. Sensually Spoiled Rotten is stocked with all the fun, classy-sexy things that Casas loves herself. She takes a playful approach to lingerie, and wants her customers to have as much fun exploring as she does picking out products. There are corsets and boas in all different colors and designs for the bold, a variety of costumes yearround, and Victoria’s Secret quality underthings at a fraction of the price. Nothing in the store costs over $50, and Casas is determined to keep it that way. “I like to keep my prices soft,” she says. This price point applies to her selection of Guess purses, wigs, and all of her high heels and boots, too, and bigger sizes don’t get the extra markup that’s typical for anything above a “large.” Shoppers will find sizes 0 through 3X and bra sizes up to DDD, so there’s something for every body shape. “Sexy isn’t a size,” Casas says.

A lot of thought and detail have gone into this boutique - from the pale pink and white walls and built-in cabinets, elaborate chandeliers, and cozy sitting area near the fitting rooms, Casas has carefully created a place that is both comfortable and classy. She has even taken care to be sure that strollers and wheelchairs can navigate through the store, and makes it clear that everyone is invited. Though lacy underwear is the backbone of Sensually Spoiled Rotten, you won’t find anything racier than you might expect to see in a mall lingerie store. Casas emphasizes that they are not an “adult” store, but a place for women of all ages to find the things they need to feel beautiful. “A 75-yearold woman came in and bought a nightgown. She called me the next day and said it’s her new favorite thing she owns,” says Casas. Casas uses Facebook heavily to promote, educate, and show off new merchandise for her customers. Anyone who pops by the page will find photos of dresses and designs available in the store as well as tips on how to properly take care of your dainties. If you see something you like, Casas is willing to hold items in the store for a couple days, but emphasizes she’s not in the online sales business. This boutique is meant to be experienced, so stop by and pamper yourself just a little.

Adrenaline Rush GIFT IDEAS BY JESSICA CLARE

Everyone has at least one bonafide adrenaline junkie in their lives someone who has a reputation for driving too fast, or being first in line for the most frightening-looking rides at amusement parks. Why not challenge them with a gift that will really get their blood pumping?

UNDERGROUND EXPLORATION

KITESURFING If you haven’t heard of kitesurfing, imagine that parasailing and surfing had a baby—a fast, dangerous baby. This relatively new extreme sport harnesses both waves and wind, using giant, parachute-like “kites” to propel boarders through the water and the air. It’s definitely recommended that any thrill-seekers who want to give kitesurfing a whirl sign up for a few lessons first, and Santa Cruz Kitesurfing is ready to teach anyone what it takes to be a great—and safe—kitesurfer. Their certified instructors give one-on-one lessons, and only ask that students be strong swimmers. (If you aren’t into swimming, kitesurfing definitely isn’t for you, anyway.) Their lesson plans are available online, and once you’ve graduated from their school, you’re free to pursue your own kitesurfing adventures at any beaches or lakes that welcome the sport.

Maybe you’ve already made the trek down Moaning Cavern’s infamous spiral staircase, which takes some guts in itself— but if you’re ready to up the ante, sign up for the three-hour tour that starts with rappelling roughly sixteen stories through the main chamber and takes you through the nooks and crannies you never get to see on the main tour. Spelunkers will shimmy through ominously-named and undeveloped areas like “the meat grinder” and “Godzilla’s nostril” by the light of their hard hats. This tour will take you through tight spaces and plenty of mud, and though coveralls are handed out before the tour, expect to crawl out covered in dirt. But that’s part of the adventure, and the shower afterwards will be the best you’ve ever taken.

SWIM WITH SHARKS Anyone who watches Shark Week every year may already know that the Farallon Islands, thirty miles west of the Golden Gate, are a hot spot for migrating Great White Sharks, who stop to feast on the elephant seals and rich wildlife that gathers around “California’s Galapagos.” The truly adventurous are welcome to slip into a wetsuit and spend some time in the water with these eating machines—behind the thick steel bars of a shark cage, of course. Great White Adventures offers day-long jaunts to the sharks’ hunting grounds and, just to make sure you have a close encounter, use decoys to lure them closer to their dive boat, the Superfish—which, by the way, is larger and more advanced than Quint’s ill-fated Orca in Jaws, so don’t worry about needing a bigger boat. If you’re not ready to be so close to one of nature’s most infamous predators, you can also sign up to stay on deck and watch your friends from above. But where’s the fun in that? C H A R I T Y S P O T L I G H T Thanks to the large number of donations received from all over San Joaquin County every year, Goodwill is able to help people find employment and regain their independence.

Goodwill is probably already a household name for you - it’s your goto stop after spring cleaning, the place you schlepp your old furniture to after redecorating, and the end-of-theline for all the things that didn’t get scooped up at your last garage sale. But do you know what Goodwill’s number one mission is? Believe it or not, the main goal of this ubiquitous charity is offering employment to those who face difficulties being hired elsewhere. And, according to Sally Wooden, the Director of Public Relations and Development for the San Joaquin Valley branch, they’re doing a great job at it. Goodwill Industries of San Joaquin Valley currently employs 351 people between their sixteen (soon to be seventeen) stores and administrative offices, and they’re looking to hire more. In addition, Goodwill has helped forty-one people with severe disabilities gain employment and competitive salaries through their contracts with government organizations like the IRS, California Department of Forestry, and USDA. Goodwill also offers

job preparation, placement, and planning services, so, all told, they have helped almost five thousand people become self-sufficient. However, it’s your regular donations of last season’s clothes that allow Goodwill to offer these employment services. “We fund our mission, which is funding job services to people who have barriers to employment, through the stores,” explains Wooden. She also says that the influx of donations has been steadily increasing, a sign that the economy is slowly but surely picking back up. “We see it in the donation stream when the economy is sluggish. When people are optimistic, we see it in donations. The quality of donations improves when the economy improves.” Recycling is also a big part of Goodwill’s plan, and they encourage people to pass things on instead of throwing them away. “San Joaquin Goodwill alone diverted ten million pounds of textiles, electronics, and shoes away from landfills,” says Wooden. She points out that Goodwill accepts electronics seven days a week, which should be a relief

to anyone who’s been wondering what to do with their old computers. By taking your old gizmos to Goodwill, you can avoid trying to keep track of e-waste collection days and have the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve helped keep one more thing out of a landfill and helped one more person keep a job. Helping keep Goodwill going is as easy as swinging by one of their community donation centers or stores, and with seventeen stores and fourteen donation centers in the San Joaquin Valley, there is definitely one close to you. There is always a huge need for clothing, especially children’s clothing, so keep cleaning out those closets.

HISTORY OF SAN JOAQUIN

L O C A L H I S T O R Y

A Bazaar of Holiday History BY RACHAEL KANNER

Photos Courtesy of the Bank of Stockton

Santa Claus dates back as far as the seventeenth century, with many local traditions even predating that. However, the modern Saint Nick was the result of a radical transformation that occurred from the 1800s until well into the 1930s. With literary assistance from such well known works as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, written in 1823, and images by Thomas Nast popular from the 1880s to the 1890s as well as the Coca Cola ads created in the 1930s, the new image of Santa launched him into the hearts and traditions of those who celebrate today. By 1901, ads such as this for a local Stockton business circulated, yet the transformation of Santa Claus was far from complete.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE

The United Service Organization (USO) was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941 as a collaboration between numerous organizations that wished to better contribute to the war effort. Their original objective was to cater to the soldiers' needs for emotional support; one such obstacle the new organization faced was holidays. The holidays have long been difficult during wartimes for both soldiers abroad and families at home. The USO enacted numerous programs, such as one that involved sending holiday packets to the troops so they could also celebrate wherever they were stationed. For the soldiers, it gave them some supplies as well as a relief from warfare and a reminder of what they were fighting for.

The San Joaquin Valley is well known as an agricultural center with weather that is conducive to many essential crops. The area is not known as a place that sees very much snow. Nevertheless, freak snowstorms have occurred throughout the valley’s history. One such storm confounded Stockton in 1936. The storm dropped enough snow that the Hunter Street Fire Station firefighters were able to build a snowman modeled after their fire chief. While enough snow to build snowmen is quite rare in the county, several winters have seen light snow dusting trees and cars.

Winter carnivals and parities have been hosted sporadically throughout the holiday seasons in Stockton. One such carnival was held in 1938 with a winter sports theme. It included music, dancing, and films displaying the many winter sports that occurred in Northern California. In addition, a Snow Queen was crowned. The Queen was selected among the girls as the one wearing the most colorful, but also functional, sports outfits. Northern California has a long history of winter sports with Tahoe and the Sierra Nevadas so close to San Joaquin County, making the mountains a quick getaway for many families and an early appreciation for the athletic activities snow created.

The modern tradition of Christmas trees goes back to the early 1500s. However, many believe its roots may go back much further, to pre-Christian communities. Whatever the origin, the tradition has grown and changed through the years. For instance, a family or community’s Christmas trees had always been chopped down and brought back from a forest. However, in the 1900s the first tree farms were established. It took a while for the farms to catch on as many people preferred to acquire their trees in the traditional way long into the 1930s and 1940s. Stockton was no exception; the Stockton Transfer Co. was used to transport a tree for the Stockton Record from the Sierra Nevada Mountains for their 1923 celebration. DECEMBER 2012

DECEMBER 2012

BY JENN THORNTON

The countdown has begun! Here, how to celebrate New Year’s Eve on the town, or at home, in San Joaquin County.

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE

GET A ROOM! Add class to the bash at Wine and Roses (winerose.com). Lodi’s premier event venue will host New Year’s Eve festivities, featuring a DJ, hors d’ oeuvres, party favors, a photo booth, confetti canons, a Champagne toast, and Midnight Brunch ($80 per person) in the Garden Ballroom, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Extend your stay with the venue’s NYE Hotel Package. Staring at $415 (plus tax and resort fee), it includes a New Year’s Eve night stay in a King or King Fireplace Guest Room; Champagne for two; a pair of tickets to festivities in the Garden Ballroom; plus a New Year’s Day breakfast buffet, also for two.

3

TURN UP THE HEAT MAKE A FUN RUN Before the ball drops, grab the fam for year-end magic at Dell’Osso Family Farm (dellossofamilyfarm.com) in Lathrop. On the docket for this year’s Holidays on the Farm winter extravaganza are snow activities and a mile-long drive through the Lights on the Farm illumination display, plus hayrides, ice-skating, and more.

Leave the kids with a sitter and squire your one and only to a quiet dinner in Stockton. Le Bistro (lebistrostockton.com), Stockton Joe’s (stocktonjoes.com), and Centrale Restaurant & Lounge all spark conversation for their romantic tables, inthe-mood atmospheres and equally seductive menus.

MIX IT UP Mingle at Stockton’s chic urban lounge AVE on the Mile (avenueonthemile. com) while mixologists muddle spicy libations for its “New York, New York” themed New Year’s Eve celebration. Heavy appetizers, desserts, live music and DJ, Champagne toast, Ball Drop Countdown, and party favors aplenty are all on tap ($60 per ticket). Attire is semi-formal, bottle service is available for parties of six to eight revelers, and dancing will groove into 2013!

GET REEL For an inexpensive night out, hit the cineplex for the latest blockbuster (Hollywood rolls out its Oscar frontrunners this time of year), or cozy up with NYEinspired classics like When Harry Met Sally, 200 Cigarettes, The Poseidon Adventure, and, at midnight, cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

6

TAKE FLIGHT

5

Steal away on the cheap and score rock-bottom-priced plane tickets on December 31! Most air carriers drop ticket prices on flights to popular hubs like Las Vegas, romantic waylays like the usually pricey Santa Barbara, and sunnier stopovers in the Caribbean and Mexico. Discover a whole new view from the cheap seats on sites like priceline.com and cheapair.com, and cash in further with discounts—comb Groupon and Living Social websites for deals of the days and tack on AAA and Costco memberships.

DECEMBER DECEMBER 2012 2012

HITCH A RIDE

HAVE A BALL! University Plaza Waterfront Hotel (universitywaterfrontplazahotel.com) will rock New Year’s Eve with the return of its Black and White Ball. Spring for the Dinner and Dancing package and, for just $75 per person, enjoy a three-course meal, plus all the movin’ and groovin’ you can handle (dancing without dinner is $40 per person). Tack on a room with a king-sized bed for just $119 or a double for $129 and receive a coupon for a complimentary New Year’s Day breakfast buffet. A cover charge of $20 will be imposed for latecomers arriving at the lounge 10 p.m. or later. You must be clad in black and white to dance in the ballroom. Reservations are limited.

TRIP THE LIGHTS FANTASTIC

8

Looking for a low-cost activity with the kids before the clock strikes 12? Coast over to the tree-lined streets of Magnolia Historic Neighborhood (visitstockton.org), visitstockton.org), where visitstockton.org the dazzling light display decking the architectural marvels here will dazzle little ones and delight their parents. Check it out before the lights go out for another year.

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

The best New Year’s Eve plans belong to those who plan ahead—do yourself and everyone else a favor and designate a sober driver well before the party gets underway. But for all you stragglers out there, the AAA’s Tipsy Tow program rolls out 6 p.m. on December 31 and keeps on truckin’ until 6 a.m. on January 1. Both members and non-members can hail a free tow to go within ten miles from the call area (800-222-4357 for a pick-up).

9

LOG ON

10

Watch as the world welcomes 2013. Catch the countdown live from Times Square via online streaming (try TimesSquareNYC.org TimesSquareNYC.org). For family-friendly festivities as they unfold, check out amusement park websites like Disneyland and preview past parties from across the globe on YouTube while you wait for midnight.

11

RAISE THE WOOF

On behalf of the Lodi American Legion, the Vine Dawgz will take the stage for the Vine Dawgz ROCK! New Year’s Eve fundraiser from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. with proceeds benefiting local veterans. Expect a complimentary wine tasting from 6 to 8 p.m., non-host bar and tri-tip dinner along with plenty of tunes and grooves, raffles, “Karaoke with the Band” and a “Howl Off." Purchase tickets in advance and online at vinedawgz.com.

COME ON, GET APP-Y! If a trip to NYC is too far off the grid this year, watch the revelry on your cell with Times Square’s Official New Year’s Eve Ball App (timessquareball. net). Catch all the action—Anet list musical performances, celeb appearances, and hourly countdowns, oh my!—live from Times Square (24/7 Livestream Ball cam included).

HIDE (AND SEEK!) Join the charade parade at Variety’s Banquet Hall and Terrace (varietysbanquethall.com) on NYE, when Stockton’s souped-up venue will host its Black and White Masquerade Ball from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. ($55 per person/$100 per couple). Headlining this year-end extravaganza: a DJ (expect to hear top-40 classics from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, with a little Salsa and Merengue thrown in), plus a full spread including awesome apps, a delish dinner, and delectable dessert. A Champagne toast, balloon drop, party favors, cigar and hookah lounges, private cabanas, and complimentary black carpet photo shoot are also in the mix.

15 GO TO MARKET Put the kibosh on frozen nosh for fresh deli from Podesto’s. Swing by Stockton’s specialty grocer and stock up on goodies galore in all categories—from meats and cheese to breads and sweets. Fresh market finds put a gourmet spin on tired catering trays and spiritless finger foods, taking your party from potluck to posh in no time.

GET CRAFTY

14 17 GRUB GOURMET

Dig into a delectable six-courser at the New Year’s Eve with Towne House Restaurant at Wine & Roses (loditownehouse. com). Both 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. dinner seatings feature six courses of absolute delight for $75. For something smaller but no less savory, the Lounge will serve up a $20 small-plate menu with ten choices from the hors d’oeuvre menu plus dessert. Live music, too!

66

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE

16

If you got toddlers, you got problems—it’s a long way to midnight, Mom and Dad. Rather than busy the kids with the same old charades (sounds like “bored”), set up a craft station where they can prep for the push, creating DIY confetti, paper chains, and glittery masks and noisemakers while you wait for the ball to drop. Best of all, crafts don’t break the bank. Stock up on supplies at Michael’s in Stockton (michaels.com).

MAKE TIME

You’ve let the precious years tick by, don’t let the hours bypass you too! Spend the remaining moments of 2012 creating more with a family time capsule. Gather your clan, and ask everyone to collect their most special mementos—school pictures, report cards, craft projects, sports medals, etc— to fill a special container. Seal it and bury it in the backyard, with plans to dig it up and reminisce the same time next year. Looking back is a great way for the kids to get excited about the future.

PUMP UP THE JAMS Keep the beat at home with native Stocktonite musician (and sometime Smash Mouth keyboardist) Mike Klooster’s New Year’s Eve party playlist essentials. “1999,” Prince “Give It To Me Baby,” Rick James “Back in Black,” AC/DC “Rock And Roll All Nite,” KISS “Auld Lang Syne,” Jimi Hendrix “Celebration,” Kool & The Gang “New York, New York,” Frank Sinatra “Hey Ya!” Outkast “She’s a Bad Mama Jamma,” Stevie Wonder “Revolution,” The Beatles Anything from Off the Wall by Michael Jackson

19

WYNE ALL ABOUT IT

Every year-end soiree needs scads of Champagne. Thankfully, in San Joaquin County, it’s in no short supply. For a crisp finish—literally—raise a glass to Lodi’s homegrown Harmony Wynlands Champagne (harmonywynelands.com), which works fruity wonders as a bottoms-up toast with the most, or when paired with apertifs and hors d’oeuvres.

DECEMBER 2012

PUT ON THE SPRITZ! Your New Year’s Eve shindig will be the buzz with this Red Wine Spritzer recipe from Rachel Ray (rachelray.com). Substitute the Italian table wine for your favorite local vintage (we love Ripken Winery’s Rosato Sangiovese!).

24

20

RESOLVE TO INDULGE

Primp for primetime at Versailles Salon (versaillessalon.com). Serious sprucing at Tracy’s favorite spa—a frequent “Best of San Joaquin Magazine” award winner— comes courtesy of a new ‘do, nails, spray tan, massage, the works. (Get the whole gamut with a package deal!) Call for details and availability.

FROCK ON! A little sparkly goes a long way, so before hitting the party circuit, primp at Lincoln Center Shops (lincolncentershops.com), where retail outposts like Flair and FINA carry glammed-up getups and refined occasion wear that’ll have you stepping out in style. For pretty underpinnings, lacey unmentionables, and accessories galore, comb the racks at Theadora.

23 CROSS OVER Head over to Woodbridge, where fine-dining outpost Woodbridge Crossing (woodbridgecrossing.net) will host another New Year’s Eve blowout with live classic rock music, savory spirits, and a delectable dinner with homemade soup or salad and entrées ranging from prime rib to calamari. A midnight Champagne toast and balloon drop are on the menu, too. Gussy up or don jeans—anything goes at the Crossing. Reservations required.

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

Serves 6 Ingredients: ½ pint blackberries ½ pint raspberries 1 750 ml bottle dry red Italian table wine 1 quart sparkling water or seltzer, chilled Preparation: Fill the bottom of six large wine glasses with a mixture of berries. Pour the wine in to cover and let stand for 10 minutes. Top the glasses with sparkling water or seltzer when you are ready to serve. *Recipe from RachelRay.com

HIT THE ROAD

People come from all over the globe to visit a true marvel just a few hours away— Yosemite National Park ((yosemitepark. com). If itching to get away for the holiday, the historic Ahwahnee Hotel is hosting its 2012 Dinner Dance Celebration Package, which includes lodging for two, two tickets to The Ahwahnee New Year’s Gala (a black-tie affair), a portrait sitting and New Year’s Day Brunch at the hotel. Families will love more casual twists on festivities with events at Yosemite Lodge at the Falls and the charming Wawona Hotel.

SAY CHEESE

Stocking a selection of sparkling wines and great craft beers (bubbles for everyone!), Cheese Central (cheesecentrallodi.com) in downtown Lodi is hosting its “Special Pairing for the Holidays” in the run up to New Year’s Eve. Part of purveyor’s Cheese 101C series, the NYE-inspired Champagne and cheese pairing, held Dec. 13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., will prep you for all the cork-popping. Can’t make class? Cheese Central makes its own House Blend cheese spread (“Its perfect for bread, tastes like Fondue, but without the work,” says owner Cindy Della Monica) and ready-toheat-and-serve Dill Havarti Fondue. Headed to a party? Pick up a specially prepared cheese platter with accompaniments. Order up at (209) 368-3033.

As kids, opening presents was easily the most exciting part of Christmas—who didn’t watch the pile of gifts around the tree grow with eager anticipation? Now that we’re all grown up, we’ve learned that giving is even more fun than getting. Nothing beats that look of excitement on a loved one’s face when you find something they didn’t even know they wanted. So, while you’re out looking for those hard-to-find last minute gifts, try hitting up some of San Joaquin’s local shops and boutiques for something completely unexpected.

FOR THE WOULD-BE ROCKSTAR Have any friends who traded their superstar ambitions for the practicality of adulthood, or up-and-coming musical geniuses in the family? Both Main Street Music (Tracy) and the Music Box (Stockton) have everything you need for the budding, or retired, rock god. Both shops boast an impressive selection of electric axes, and offer lessons for those who’d like to be able to do more than hammer out a little “Stairway” (which isn’t even allowed in The Music Box, a la Wayne’s World). If you’re ready to graduate from Guitar Hero or looking to get the band back together, The Music Box and Main Street Music have what you need. FOR THE ART LOVER If you want to find something a little more intriguing than a Picasso print for your artsy friends and family, hit up one of the local galleries for some one-of-a-kind artwork crafted by local painters, sculptors, and photographers. Knowlton Gallery, located in Downtown Lodi, features a variety of artwork—including handcrafted jewelry—and also offers regular workshops, so your artistically inclined loved ones can hone their painting skills. The Art Expressions of San Joaquin co-op, formerly known as the Tidewater Gallery, has no permanent home, but continues to exhibit at the County Administration building in downtown Stockton. Many of the artists who were featured at Tidewater will continue to exhibit through the new collective, along with some newcomers. As always, the artwork on display is for sale, along with jewelry and housewares made by local artists. Don’t miss this chance to pick up a truly unique piece. FOR THE FITNESS FANATIC We all have that friend who always manages to make it to the gym, spends their weekends running 5ks, and actually looks like they know what they’re doing while they Zumba. Fleet Feet Sports has everything the sporty folk in your life could possibly need, from running shoes to workout gear to those energy gels that make long-distance runs bearable. (Don’t worry—they also sell gift cards if you don’t understand what any of these things are for.) If you really want to throw a challenge their way, sign them up for some sessions at Combine Fitness. Both TRX bootcamp and the ever-popular pole dancing classes are offered, so the athlete in your life can kick off the new year with a brand new routine. FOR THE SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS STYLE HOUND Everyone has at least one person in our lives who inspires us to be a little better—maybe they actually started that compost bin you kept talking about, or were first in line to contribute to the Hurricane Sandy relief. When you’re shopping for someone who epitomizes the “think globally, act locally” philosophy, try REVO Denim in Stockton. This beach town-inspired shop offers an “eco” line of denim, selling gently used designer jeans at much cheaper prices and encouraging their customers to recycle unwanted clothes. Their “ReHAB” line features old Levi’s that have been re-vamped as shorts and Bermudas, each pair completely unique and eco-friendly. By now, you’ve probably heard of TOMS and their “buy one give one” model that sends a pair of shoes or eyeglasses to people in need for every pair purchased. By giving a pair of TOMS, you’re really giving two gifts, and how can it get any better than that? Prêt has been carrying TOMS for years, before they were so well known and often copied, so if you want the best local selection of this generous brand, head to this downtown Lodi boutique.

FOR THE FUTURE FASHIONISTA Sometimes, the toughest people to shop for are also the tiniest. Trying to pick out just the right gift for the kid transitioning to tween-dom can feel impossible, and it’s hard to satisfy both their urge for adulthood and the lingering childhood interests. But don’t worry! We have fantastic kid-oriented boutiques happy to help you pick out just something they’re bound to love. Whether it’s a Juicy Couture charm bracelet from Sassypants or some trendy Roxy swag from Zoop-A-Loop, these shops have just what you need to make your favorite kids feel a little more like grown-ups. (Both boutiques also carry toys and books, so they don’t have to feel too grown up yet.) If you’re shopping for an infant or parents-to-be, don’t miss the selection of fashionable baby bags and toddler toys at Tots and Teapots. ZOOP-A-LOOP

FOR THE BOOKWORM

FOR THE FAMILY FOODIE Sure, everyone loves great food. But what do you get for the people who love coming up with delicious meals and recipes as much as you love eating them? For those who can elevate even macaroni and cheese into an art form, Lodi Cooks is filled with the kitchen gadgets that will make any home chef ’s head spin, from high-quality cutlery to cast iron and the specialty appliances to really let them take their cooking to a new level. Then there are the grillers, the cooks who won’t be seen without a giant spatula in hand as soon as the weather warms up. For your loved ones who prefer their food be prepared over fire, there is Fat City Griller Supply, which specializes in all the BBQ gizmos you need to turn your backyard grill into a summertime kitchen. If baking is more their speed, Frosted Flour has all the tools to craft beautiful cakes and cupcakes out of frosting and even fondant for the advanced bakers.

Some people aren’t ready to trade their book collections for Kindles just yet. If you’re looking for just the right gift for those who are still hanging on to their hardcovers, try perusing the impressive selection at Tom’s Used Books in downtown Lodi. This shop boasts multiple rooms packed contemporary fiction, classic literature, history volumes, and just about anything a die-hard reader could have on their wish list. The friendly customer service and freewandering shop cats definitely make this quirky bookstore worth a visit while you’re running your holiday errands.

For those who can’t wait for the next Avenger’s movie or who rave about The Walking Dead, try picking up a couple volumes of the comics that inspired the current superheroes and zombie crazes. Al’s Comics in Stockton has long been known for an impressive selection of current issues, plus big-name graphic novels like Watchmen and Knightfall (the inspiration for The Dark Knight Rises). FOR THE LIPSTICK AND LACE LADIES Ladies, let’s be honest—sometimes, nothing puts you in a better mood than knowing that you’re wearing some really great underwear. There’s something about a superb set of lace underpinnings that puts an extra spring in your step and inspires a little more confidence than the old cotton granny-panties. If you’re not-so-subtlety dropping hints to your S.O. about picking up something a little more exciting this year, you might want to direct them to Theadora in Stockton. This lingerie boutique has all sorts of lacey underthings that are as comfortable as they are luxurious, plus PJs that you’ll never want to take off. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, try Lodi’s Sensually Spoiled Rotten, which adds corsets, boas, and costumes to its lingerie selection. FOR THE FASHION MAVEN Know someone who’s always dressed to impress? Someone with enviable style and impeccable taste? No worries, you can find just the right look to compliment their already impressive wardrobe at any of our local boutiques. While there are an impressive number of fashion-forward boutiques in San Joaquin, both FINA and Bellissima are longtime local favorites for their distinct styles. FINA carries the latest designs by boho brands like Free People (the high-end cousin of Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie) and Testament. Bellisima’s styles lean to an edgier, rock ‘n’ roll look, with foil-embossed outfits and chunky jewelry to match. Whether you’re looking for their new favorite sweater or some bold, statement pieces to kick up their favorite ensembles, either boutique is a must-see for your fashionista friends. FINA

COLORADO ROCKIES

Colorado BY JENNIFER THORNTON

ROCKIES Colorado’s historic resort, The Broadmoor, hosts a peak season in the Rocky Mountains.

White-capped ridges, starry night skies, epic views, and the cool tingle of crisp air in high climes—the Colorado Rocky Mountains are a haven for all classes of traveler, accommodating with equal aplomb discerning alpinists and easygoing families to big-air types just in from Boulder. Best known and vis-

ited for world-class slopes at twenty-six ski resorts situated throughout the state— blink and you’ll miss a black diamond run—this buzzing winter wonderland tips its affable hat to pole-less pursuits, too, most far removed from congested lift lines at Vail and company.

DECEMBER 2012

Roosting within the region’s precipitous interior is The Broadmoor (broadmoor.com). Looming large in Colorado Springs and located just 90 minutes from Denver International Airport, this historic hotel takes advantage of its coveted address—here, amid cozy confines and majestic surrounds, rustic-chic warmth cloaked in well-fashioned opulence is revealed. Beckoning at the southern edge of the Rockies, The Broadmoor bathes in astonishing natural beauty, securing its much-ballyhooed standing in the annals of out-west wonderment. A porthole into eras past, Colorado’s “grande dame” winks Old West but courts the new guard with

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

amenities and upgrades galore (the first phase of a multiyear renovation on the property was completed last spring). Possessing both AAA Five-Diamond and Forbes Travel Guide FiveStar accolades plus countless more hospitality nods, The Broadmoor is truly unique, boasting modern-day cachet while bolstering the argument for aging gracefully.    Since opening in 1918 (not long after the region’s hardscrabble homesteaders were tangling with outlaws), The Broadmoor has hosted everyone from world dignitaries, leaders and statesman to high-profile athletes and A-list

celebs. Credit its revolving door of indulgences—among them 593 exquisitely-appointed hotel rooms, 107 suites and 44 cottage bedrooms; a luxurious day spa; 18 lounges, cafes and restaurants (most notably, Colorado’s lone Five-Star, Five-Diamond restaurant, the Penrose Room); 54 holes of championship golf; six tennis courts, indoor/outdoor pools; a movie theater; unique retail shops (one of these an honest-to-goodness haberdashery); and specialty tours, activities, and programs for guests of all ages and interests.

COLORADO ROCKIES

Next Stop,

LEADVILLE! In close proximity to culturally-rich and recreationally diverse Colorado Springs is the high heritage mountain town of Leadville (leadville.com). Tracing its rough-and-tumble roots back to goatees and gunfights, this former silver mining colony-turned-“Top of the Rockies” outpost, is now a place to strike gold. Here visitors discover both authentic Old West character—and characters. Home to the legendary Leadville Trail 100 (one of the most grueling foot races in the world), the town is a boon of to-dos at 10,512 feet above sea level. Visits to iconic sites like the Tabor Opera House and the National Mining Museum, not to mention a slew of extreme sporting events, plus antiques and quirky gift emporiums, combine to make Leadville an itinerary headliner.

Truly a destination unto itself—at 3,000 acres, “sprawling” is the only word accurate enough to describe the resort, yet it feels measly when standing in the shadow if its architecturally imposing presence—The Broadmoor is rolling out three holiday packages for seasonal visitors. All include overnight accommodations and complimentary access to special holiday-related events, with guests overnighting it on November 24 invited to usher in the season at the hotel’s twenty-sixth annual White Lights Ceremony—a dazzling display of 260,000 sparklers giving the stars a serious run for their money in the illumination department. Add to this slate decadent meals, with seriously sumptuous spreads for the biggies—Thanksgivings and Christmas— and numerous other ‘tis-the-season-type shindigs. Of these, the yearly Classic Broadmoor Christmas earns a special place on the marquee, with a Broadway-worthy dinner show featuring the Broadmoor Pops Orchestra and The Colorado Springs Chorale (Psst! An appearance of the man in the big red suit is also planned.). New Year’s Eve, meanwhile, gets underway with lively jazz and its very own gala.

name? All thanks go to magnificent Pikes Peak. Composer Katharine Lee Bates penned the song after summiting the mammoth 14,115-foot mountain in 1893. Weather permitting, you can visit this American treasure year-round, but, thankfully, the less extreme don’t have to strap on cramp-ons or clutch an ice pick to do it. Pikes Peak Cog Railway (cograilways.com) regularly steams its way up to the top, making passage on this voyage essential on any must-do docket. And be sure to pencil in a visit to Cave of the Winds (caveofthewinds.com). Touring these subterranean chambers is not for the faint of heart (or claustrophobics), but well worth the heebie-jeebies of going underground for adventure of the 500-million-year-old variety. Those unfazed by the possibilities of stratospheric levels of panic will love the Bat-a-Pult. Like a boomerang, this allnew aerial attraction slingshots thrill riders 1,200 foot roundtrip from Pavilion rafters through Williams Canyon in a whoosh.

As it turns out, The Broadmoor’s oft-flaunted moniker—“The gateway to the Colorado Rocky Mountains”—is no sales pitch. Despite having every possible accoutrement and refinement one could possibly want on the property, the hotel’s prime proximity to exterior spoils by way of attractions in scenic Pikes Peak (pikespeakcolorado.com) and Colorado Springs (coloradosprings.com) provide ample enticement to step outside and explore. Ever wonder where “America the Beautiful” got its

94

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE

DECEMBER 2012

Less likely to induce panic are cultural exploits in Colorado Springs. Take its namesake creativity hub, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (csfineartscenter.org). Overlooking Pikes Peak, this art museum, performing arts center, and art school hybrid is a stunner, having emerged from a $28.4 million facelift in 2007 as one of the Centennial State’s most significant structures. Also in the principal draw category is the U.S. Air Force Academy (usafa.af.mil), U.S. Olympic Complex (teamusa.org), and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (cmzoo. rog), the only one of its kind in the

nation. Joining them high on the sites to see scale is a bastion of historical highlights and western-themed recreation. From authentic ranches to equestrian outfits to pro rodeos, you can saddle up for about anything just shy of a saloon girl or a shootout. But, should you never stray from the borders of The Broadmoor, you won’t be disappointed. With elegant appointments, endless activities and ambiance in strong supply, this historical ode to elegance is doing its best to tame the wilds of the West.

In the Spotlight:

Woodbridge Crossing Old West sophistication BY JESSICA CLARE

Photo: Dan Hood

Woodbridge Crossing isn’t the sort of place that’s easy to define. The menu boasts an awful lot of steakhouse fare, but they also serve hearty breakfasts and brunches complete with mimosas, and their bar could be a standalone hangout on its own. To confound things even more, this old brick building is filled with cowboys and Indians-style decor, including tomahawks, old pistols, tons of John Wayne a la “Hondo” memorabilia, and even a small-scale stagecoach. So what is Woodbridge Crossing, exactly?

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

Photos: Dan Hood

No matter what you want to call it, Woodbridge Crossing makes a point to be good at all they do. Their lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch menus are short and sweet, filled with foods that best match the meal. Amble in for lunch and you’ll find a selection of meaty, mouthwatering sandwiches, from the simple grilled cheese and ham to the decadent French dip, piled high with prime rib and served with the all-important au jus to sop up with soft sourdough bread.   If you’re planning an evening at Woodbridge Crossing, make sure you arrive hungry. You’ll want to sneak in an appetizer, like their crispy calamari strips or delightfully light bruschetta, before digging into one of their generously portioned entrees. Their baby back ribs are tender and, as promised, fall off the bone, and are slathered with house-made BBQ sauce that is sweet, but gives the flavor of the meat plenty of room to shine. The same prime rib that graces the French dip is available by itself at dinner, paired simply with some sauteed veggies and a baked potato for those who are looking for a good ‘ole meat and potatoes kind of meal. Prefer “surf” to “turf”? You’ll also find classic

seafood fare like grilled salmon and shrimp scampi on the menu, all handled with the characteristic Woodbridge Crossing simplicity. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, try their deep fried stuffed shrimp--tender prawns are filled with a rich mix of cream cheese and crab, breaded in Panko crumbs, and fried until the devilish concoction is covered in a crispy shell. This dish is definitely for your diet cheat days, but worth every calorie.   And then there is Sunday brunch, a must for anyone who really wants to make the most of the last day of the weekend or needs to spend a morning recovering from Saturday’s shenanigans. Their breakfast dishes match the decadence of their dinner entrees, with rich foods like French toast, biscuits drowned in thick country gravy, and a seafood omelet stuffed with crab and shrimp and smothered in the same creamy hollandaise sauce that graces their eggs benedict. And, of course, there’s the complimentary champagne / mimosas, or you can order an extra spicy bloody mary to really get your Sunday started right.   As if their food wasn’t enough of a draw, Woodbridge Crossing also cements its reputation

as a great local hangout by hosting live music Friday and Saturday nights, so anyone in the Woodbridge area looking for something to do can pop in for one of their specialty cocktails and enjoy some local musical talents. Looking for a great way to spend New Year’s Eve or Superbowl Sunday? Holidays and the big sporting events play a big part in Woodbridge Crossing’s entertainment roster, and big gatherings are hosted for all those who’d like to do more than just stay at home for the big game.    Between their menus, thorough bar selection, and their enthusiasm for hosting big parties, after a few trips to Woodbridge Crossing, you’ll stop trying to search for ways to describe this restaurant to others and just start calling it your second home.

WINE PICKS

Local Lodi This month's picks from the Lodi Wine and Visitor Center

Borra Vineyards, the oldest of Lodi’s currently existing wineries (bonded in 1975), has recently released their yearly “Field Blend Red” – a wine that in many ways epitomizes the heart and soul of the Lodi American Viticultural Area. Of proud Italian descent, Borra’s third generation grower/proprietor Steve Borra describes this wine as “an homage to the way my grandfather made wine.”   According to Borra, “grandpa was very Old World — he’d pick all the grapes at once and everything would go into one vat, no matter what kind of grape it was. Of course, he used wild yeast, and everything was natural — he didn’t know about stuff like sulfur — and he’d siphon the wines into one gallon jugs, one jug at a time, from one barrel at a time. Keep in mind, my grandfather could easily polish off a liter of wine at a time, and that was just lunch. He’d finish another liter and a half later, for dinner.   “Of course, by the time he’d get to the bottom of a barrel, the wine would no longer be stable, exposed to so much oxygen, and so it didn’t taste so good. When it came time to pop open a fresh barrel, he’d fill up his jug, bring it back to the house, pour himself a glass and say, ‘oh, this barrel is so much better than the last one!’”   The 2010 Borra Heritage Field Blend ($25) is, in fact, an old style field blend – all the grapes coming from vines surrounding the winery on Armstrong Rd., south of the town of Lodi, picked all at one time, and fermented together in one 12 ton tank: 47 percent Barbera, 22 percent Petite Sirah, 18 percent Alicante Bouschet, and 13 percent Carignane.   The Barbera grapes come from trellised vines directly behind the winery, planted over forty years ago. The oldest vines come from the family’s Church Block, growing next door to the home vineyard:

a mixed bag of waist-high, gnarly, wizened, head trained Carignane, Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet “bushes,” originally planted around 1930. The old block is called “Church” because, before being purchased by the Borras in 1995, it was owned by the local Catholic diocese, which seriously considered pulling up the vines and building a church.   Borra winemaker Markus Niggli tells us, “the purchase of the Church Block made it possible to produce the type of wine that the old Italians probably enjoyed making the most.” Niggli’s own penchant for minimalist winemaking – particularly fermentations utilizing the grapes’ own native (rather than inoculated) yeasts – enhances the terroir related qualities of the 2010 Heritage Field Blend all the more: the wine has a vivid, almost psychedelic purple color, followed by a compact, concentrated black cherry/raspberry liqueur-like fruit aroma, tinged with suggestions of caraway, sweet kitchen spices, and whiffs of animal skin with organic, loamy undertones. On the palate, the luscious fruit qualities seem barely contained by zesty yet viscous, medium-full bodied sensations, rolling like a river.   Adds Niggli, “each year, the Field Blend is always a mystery to us because we never really know how it will turn out until we actually get the grapes in – the proportions in the final blend are determined by Mother Nature. In 2010, we got more Barbera than expected, and that’s what gives the wine such bright, high acid components. The Alicante Bouschet gives it the intense color, and the Petite Sirah and Carignane adds the spiciness.”   Nowhere else in Lodi – and in the world, for that matter – is Barbera blended with Carignane, Alicante Bouschet, and Petite Sirah. As unorthodox as it is, the results are seamless and sensational—a true expression of Lodi’s own long, lustrous winegrowing heritage!

Wine Tours & Tastings The Lodi winemaking industry has enjoyed tremendous expansion in the last decade. The land devoted to vineyards has increased from 46,000 acres in 1996, to nearly 100,000 today. Now the region produces more fine wine than Napa and Sonoma combined! The Lodi appellation is proudly blowing away the mists of anonymity that have shrouded local wines, allowing them to bask in the sunshine of worldwide recognition. WINERY OF THE MONTH

VINO CULTURE

Photos Courtesy Ripken Vineyards & Winery

Ripken Vineyards & Winery BY TAMMY HANSEN

Richard “Rip” Ripken is not above a little showmanship. The founding member of Ripken Vineyards & Winery Inc. does his Viognier cheer by making a ‘v’ and then and ‘o’ with his arms, pointing to his knee, and hollering “Yay!” It’s one way to rev up customers at Ripken Vineyards’ Lodi tasting room.   That quirky, fun philosophy carries over into the Ripken family’s wines. With names like Rhonealicious and a company motto of “No Boring Wines!” Ripken Vineyards is a decidedly unstuffy. It’s hard to be snooty about a wine with flavor notes of “pencil shavings” and “tar.” “You’d have to taste it,” Ripken says of the 2008 Ripken Carmine with the aforementioned tasting notes. Don’t think the Ripken family doesn’t take its wines seriously, though—the winery founder is describing one of the small batch wines that make Ripken’s tasting room a constant adventure. The winery produces just five hundred to one thousand cases annually.    Ripken, a second-generation farmer, started tinkering with wines for extra credit in high school. A stint at UC Davis under the tutelage of several respected researchers proved he was the sort of winemaker more interested in what’s new than what’s popular. Ripken Vineyards was once a major supplier of grapevine rootstock and still sells grapes to other wineries, but

106

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE

it’s the search for the next interesting varietal that gets Rip Ripken’s juices flowing.   New this month is the Tinto de Toro Tempranillo, a Spanish style wine he describes as dark and full with hints of boysenberry and leather. He calls the wine “off-the scale delicious,” adding that it took him five years to determine that the grapes need plenty of sun for the best flavor. For whites, Ripken is bullish on the 2006 late harvest Viognier – a “dessert in a glass.” He sounds almost petulant when he admits to having recently bought twenty-five acres of old vine Zinfandel. It’s such a common wine, he just can’t get as revved up as he is about the wineries’ upcoming Montepulciano Abruzzi and Grenache Blanc.   Daughter Sue and wife Nancy are lynchpin partners in the family business, which boasts seven total family members in various positions. Check the Ripken Vineyards website and you’ll also meet the Ripken family children and the vineyard’s two dogs, Jetty and Georgie. Visit the tasting room under the weathervane sculpture of a flying, horn blowing pig to sample estate wines produced in lots of less than a hundred cases. “We’re the flavor of the month club,” he says – meaning it in the literal sense. The more unique wines can be gone in two years. Better to fall in love with the unique and changing

character of the experiments that make it to the Ripken’s tasting room table. Chances are, the Ripkens will be pouring something new since your last visit. They like to think of themselves as eclectic and even a little quirky over at Ripken, where Rip Ripken winkingly calls the wines “enologically sensual,” but boring?   Careful. He’s warming up for another cheer.

TASTE OF THE SEASON BY MICHELE BIRD

With many holiday dinners around the corner, it is time to spruce up that menu and find dishes perfect for wintertime. Leeks are one ingredient that will match any dish you cook up this season because they can be used in three forms: raw, fried, and boiled. Leeks are a vegetable and have a similar shape to asparagus as both are green, tall, and slender. When purchasing leeks at the local grocery store or farmer’s market, you should choose leeks with dark green colored tops that are not dried out. Leeks are often sold all year so most stores should have them in stock when you arrive this holiday season. If you are not a fan of onions in your recipes, leeks are a great substitute because they also provide

108

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE

WHAT'S IN SEASON

LEEKS an onion taste. Leeks have an infinite amount of recipe options including potato leek soup, leek bread pudding, and cock-a-leekie soup. Aside from being used in dishes, leeks can also stand-alone as sides or appetizers by being oven-roasted, sautéed, or boiled. Since leeks have so many cuisine options, they are one ingredient you should be sure to include to your holiday menu this December. Depending on the way you like leeks served, there are recipes that will cater to everyone’s taste buds. Make sure to try out leeks in the fresh New England clam chowder and Portobello and leek carbonara, which will leave your guests stuffed and ready for holiday festivities.

DECEMBER 2012

Portobello and Leek Carbonara

4 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped 2 leeks, trimmed, cleaned and patted dry 12 ounces baby Portobello mushrooms, quartered 1/2 pound whole wheat linguine 2 large eggs 3/4 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese Bring water for pasta to a boil. Heat a large skillet oven medium heat and add bacon. Cook until fat is rendered and bacon is crispy – about 6-7 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel to drain. Reduce heat to low. Add in leeks with a pinch of salt, then toss mushrooms on top. Stir everything together to coat, then let cook until ingredients are softened – about 5 minutes. At this time, throw the pasta in the water to cook – it is really important that the pasta is hot. While the pasta is cooking, mix eggs and cheese together in a large bowl. The mixture will be thick. As soon as pasta is finished, reserve 1/2-3/4 cup liquid, drain pasta and immediately throw into the skillet. Toss with the leeks and mushrooms to coat, then remove from heat. With a large spoon in one hand, add the egg mixture right on top and immediately begin stirring the pasta together. I usually stir for a good minute or two. At this time if desired, add the pasta water to the skillet to make things a bit more creamy and saucy. Toss in bacon. Serve immediately with extra cheese! Serves 2-4.

Fresh New England Clam Chowder 6 pounds fresh littleneck clams 10 cups of water 6 slices bacon, chopped 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 large sweet onion, diced 1 1/2 cups sliced and cleaned leeks 4 garlic cloves, minced or pressed 4 fresh thyme springs 2 bay leaves 2 tablespoons flour 2 pounds yukon gold potatoes, chopped 2 cups heavy cream 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper Add 10 cups of water to a large stock pot and let come to a boil. Once boiling, add clams, cover and let cook for 5 more minutes. Stir, then let cook, covered, for 5-10 minutes more. Remove clams (which should be open) with a slotted spoon and place in a large bowl or colander. Drain water through a very fine strainer a few times (I drained and re-drained 3 times to get rid of the sediment and sand) and reserve 6 cups of broth. Set aside. Takes clams out of shells and discard shell. Coarsely chop clams and set aside.

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

Heat another (or the same one, cleaned) large pot over medium high heat and add bacon. Cook until crispy and fat is rendered, then remove with a slotted spoon and place bacon on a paper towel to drain. Reduce heat on the pot to low, add butter, then add in onions and leeks with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Stir to coat, then cook for 5 minutes until softened. Add in garlic, thyme and bay leaves, stirring and cooking for another 5 minutes. Increase heat a bit and whisk in flour, stirring for 1-2 minutes to create somewhat of a roux with the vegetables. Add in potatoes, clams, bacon and reserved clam broth. Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce to a simmer, cooking for 30 minutes. Turn off heat, stir in heavy cream, salt and pepper. Taste and season additionally if desired. Let sit aside while making the croutons, then serve hot with croutons for topping! Note: you can definitely used canned chopped clams (I’d probably use 4 cans) and water or fish/clam/seafood stock to replace the liquid. Serves 8-10.

Sara Randall’s life long dream was to open her own Italian café where she could serve the community old style Italian comfort food, the same recipes her Northern Italian family had made for generations. Sara, along with her mother Barbara Coldani and daughter Heather, are living the dream at Bueno Italian Cafe. As Sara proudly puts it “We guarantee you that nobody else can cook like us.” Excellent local wines and beers compliment homemade pastries, entrees, deserts and an espresso bar. With cozy Italian style dining inside and out, the cafe also offers box lunch delivery to commercial establishments, plus curbside pick-up and catering. Follow us on Facebook & Yelp. Open 9am-6:30pm daily.
