Faster heart attack Innovative cardiac care saves lives. treatment saves lives.
I’m living proof. I’m living proof.
Chris Ranuio Heart attack survivor
St. Joseph’s Heart Center Ranked Top 5% in nation for vascular surgery Ranked Top 10% in nation for heart attack treatment
Perhaps Buffy sensed something was about to happen. Chris Ranuio’s faithful friend refused to budge from the groomer’s storefront, so Chris found himself carrying his 90-pound golden retriever across a big parking lot. As soon as he sat in his truck, a violent chest pain told him something was severely wrong. Chris was having a heart attack. When Chris arrived at St. Joseph’s, the cardiac team was ready. Chris’s blockage was cleared in just 28 minutes. St. Joseph’s leads the county in heart attack response as the first designated STEMI heart attack receiving center. In the race to restore blood flow in the heart, minutes can save lives. When a heart attack strikes, St. Joseph’s is ready.

All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.
- Charles M. Schulz
ebruary is one of my favorite months. Who doesn’t love a month centered around our food issue and wrapped nicely around wine, chocolate and Valentines Day? I have to admit its sometimes fun working on editorial features months in advance, my team has been eating and sipping good since Christmas. Last month hundreds of residents took part in the annual Stockton Restuarant Week where some of Stockton's finest restaurants came togther to give a price fix menu that was out-of-this-world. As we turn to February, I turn my taste buds onto the Lodi Wine and Chocolate Weekend. A wonderful two day event indulging in decadent chocolate treats and sipping award-winning, handcrafted wines at more than 40 local wineries. This month’s feature Breakfast Club—a tribute to us San Joaquinians who love going out to eat and to the many wonderful breakfast spots we can choose to nosh at on a lazy Sunday morning. We narrowed our picks from results from our readers polls asking where San Joaquin goes to eat. Whether you are an Eggs Benedict aficionado, a pancake stack stuffer or just crepe crazy, there is guaranteed to be a local breakfast joint with your name on it. Incidentally, February is also Heart Health month, and by now we’ve all heard about the supposed benefits red wine has been touted with providing to our health. Specifically, antioxidants in red wine called polyphenols may help protect the lining of blood vessels in our hearts. And resveratrol is one polyphenol in particular that may actually help prevent heart disease by increasing levels of “good” cholesterol and protecting against artery damage. I’ll raise my glass of red wine to that! Tired of the making the same Valentine’s Day plans year after year? Shake up a tired tradition by taking your Valentine to a sweet, sultry breakfast this year instead of the usual crowded dinner out. Or check out the other innovative suggestions our staff came up with for a surprising Valentine’s date night twist. (Bonus for you procrastinators--who forgot to make a dinner reservation!) Just don't be the guy that picks up two dozen roses on February 15... she will know what you're up too, trust me. Luckily, my wonderful wife only reminds me with ocassional teasing. What was I thinking?! Have a happy, heart healthy Valentine’s Day!

Don’t miss the upcoming 17th Annual Lodi Wine & Chocolate Weekend, February 8-9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., organized by the Lodi Winegrape Commission. Sip award-winning, handcrafted wines and sample decadent chocolates at over 40 wineries in the Lodi appellation. For more information, visit lodiwineandchocolate.com.
Winegrape Commission works with the winegrape growers and vintners of the region to showcase the vineyards and wines made in the Lodi region through events, media coverage, marketing and advertising campaigns, quality educational program for growers, winery owners and staff, and by promoting research to ensure the region continues to grow the best winegrapes possible. King’s duties varies from day to day and includes working on different projects and events at any given time, which is what he enjoys most about role, along with the people he gets to work with. How did King land this dream job? “I have been in the wine industry now for over a decade and had the good fortune of working with growers from all over California and the country as an advocate for the California winegrape growers, he explains. As for working in Lodi, he says it is a dream come true. “I have long respected the folks here for their history and traditions, but also for their commitment to looking to the future and being innovators. I wanted to have the opportunity to work with people who know where their roots are but also want to make a difference, and Lodi embodies that.” The Commission is involved in many ways as a part of the community and by supporting events and activities that better the Lodi region. While they are not directly involved in charity work, King notes they work with many wineries and growers, as well as other groups, to offer support in any way they are able to.
So, what are King’s favorite spots to sip wine in the city? “There are so many fun places to go,” he ponders, “but I think my favorites have to be TowneHouse, School Street Bistro, Alebrijes and Pietro’s.” He wasn’t as forthcoming, however, when asked about his favorite local wines. “I can’t pick just one!” he exclaimed. “Our growers are growing so many different varieties of winegrapes that there is something for every taste, every food, every occasion… and I am so lucky to not have to pick one!” What about non-local wines? “The beauty of wine is that it is an adventure and an exploration, and there are so many wines to try and regions to try wines from. I like comparing and contrasting the same varietal from different regions, but truthfully here in Lodi we grow grapes from all over the world, everything from Albarino to Zinfandel, so this is a fun place to start.” Indeed, while Napa and Sonoma often seem to command the majority of the attention bestowed upon the California wine scene, Lodi has cultivated its own unique niche. “When people come to Lodi,” King concludes, “often they are blown away by a few things: how great the wines are, how wonderful and friendly the people here are, and how passionate the region is about our wine community. There is something so special and unique about getting to meet the grape grower, the winemaker, the family as they work in tasting rooms, are visiting friends or enjoying a meal in town. This is truly a community and will continue to maintain that special feel for generations to come.”

SPEED
DATING & SOCIAL MIXERS
BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
NOT JUST DINNER & A MOVIE BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
Have you ever found yourself on a date…wishing it would end? Luckily, PairMeUpNow (PMUN) is offering San Joaquin residents a six-minute speed dating service, allowing us to connect with singles in the area that hold similar interests. The social categories include College Night, Christian Night, Professionals ages 18-35 and 32-50, among others. You are also encouraged to bring your friends. Grab your best wingman or wingwoman to enroll with you to ease the nerves. What should you expect when signing up for something like this? Put all of the horror-story speed-dating movie scenarios aside, dress to impress and head confidently to the meeting place. Upon arrival, you will sign in with the host and receive a welcome packet, providing you with the ins and outs of the night. Grab a drink and an appetizer and take a seat. Once the event begins, you will have about 10 dates and a scorecard to rate each connection. Make sure you keep notes on each date! Once the dates are over, the host will notify the participants via email, connecting you with your matches. It is then your responsibility to reach out to your interest to set another date. The best part? No pressure and a safe environment!
Men and women alike appreciate a little spice in their lives. Whether you’ve been with your partner for 10 days or 10 years, repeating the same old dates can leave both parties bored and complacent. Step out of the box during the month of love and do something different. We thought up a few local spots prefect for “date night” (and they won’t have a full reservation list on the 14th). So, if you forgot to book that romantic new restaurant three months ago, score points in creativity. We won’t tell. ZAPS ZONE, STOCKTON

LOEL SENIOR CENTER BY KIMBERLY STREDNEY
Other activities include: exercise, sewing, painting, line dancing, movie matinees, bingo and ping pong, card games, crafts, travel, delivering hot meals to the homebound, and computer classes. The LOEL Center servers the Greater Lodi Area and the surrounding counties. According to Williams, people come from as far as the Delta area, Galt, San Andreas, Valley Springs, and even Manteca. Although there are no age restrictions to be able to enjoy the majority of the center’s programs, you must be 60 years old and live in San Joaquin County to sign up for the Congregate Meals Program, and 62 to qualify to rent one of the center’s 16 units of affordable senior housing. FUNDRAISING/VOLUNTEERING
Mr. Holz purchased a vacant church on South Washington Street. Today, the LOEL Senior Center continues to grow with the community and strives to meet the needs of today’s seniors. “In July 2013, LOEL assumed responsibility for the Hutchins Street Square Senior Center and will continue to operate and maintain all of the programs and activities offered at this second location,” Williams says. “Our efforts, in turn, have made Mr. Holz’s dream to love and care for the senior community of Lodi a reality.”
HISTORY
PROGRAMS/SERVICES
The LOEL Foundation was started in 1976 by William Holz with an initial $100,000 bequest and was originally housed at the Hotel Lodi on School Street. The founding mission was for the center to be a Senior Agency congregate nutrition site. In 1978, however, the center and its programs grew when
The center offers a variety of services, activities and programs. “We work closely with Lodi Health to provide our seniors with as many health-related classes, activities and services possible,” Williams informs. “We work with the AARP group to provide safe driving classes, as well as free tax preparation for seniors.”

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2014
According to Williams, the center has a large volunteer group made up of about 150 seniors who do an array of duties from newsletter folding to working at the lunch desk or gift shop. She says most volunteers come to the center through a community organization or church, and often utilize the facility for an activity as well. Other ways to help include making handcrafted gifts
Upcoming events include Ladies Bunko Night on February 21, St. Patty’s Dinner on March 20, Spring Card Party on April 5, and LOEL Talent Night on May 16. Though she knows it may sound a bit cliché, Williams says her favorite part of her job is coming to work. “I love what I do and who we serve,” she proclaims. “Every day is a little different from the day before. There is always a new story or an old memory from someone. To me, it’s like having 200+ grandparents with you every day!”

HISTORY OF SAN JOAQUIN
L O C A L H I S T O R Y
STOCKTON GURDWARA SAHIB BY RACHAEL KANNER
Photos courtesy of the Bank of Stockton
The Stockton Gurdwara was founded in 1912 by Baba Jawala Singh and Baba Wasakha Singh. It was constructed in the early 1900s by the large Indian population that settled in San Joaquin County. This area was chosen for numerous reasons, most notably because it has many similarities to the Punjab region in India. A committee was assembled for the purpose of raising funds to construct a local Gurdwara, and by September of 1912, the land on South Grant Street was purchased. The purchased land already contained a farmhouse, which was converted to serve as the main building. The temple was completed by October, and services were held beginning on October 24, 1912. By 1930, renovations were necessary, and a more modern temple was constructed. The original building is now used as a library. This religious center was the first temple built to serve the Sikh community in the United States (as well as Canada), and was the sole Gurdwara in the Western United States for 55 years. Apart from its religious significance, the center also served as the only meeting place for the Indian community. It became a strong focal point for politic activity, and by 1913 the Ghadar Party was formed. The Ghadar Party became one of the first external Indian movements to end British occupation of India. To promote 40
their cause, they began publishing the The Ghadar, a newspaper made available in multiple languages that has the distinction of being the first Punjabi language newspaper in America. In addition to independence literature, the group sponsored expeditions to India. The Ghadar’s efforts did not end until India gained independence in 1947. The Ghadar Party is not the Stockton Gurdwara’s only contribution to politics. Congressman Dalip Singh Saund, elected in 1956 from the 29th District of California, was the first Indian American and first Sikh American to be elected to U.S. Congress. Congressman Saund was re-elected twice but suffered an incapacitating stroke ending his political career. Before serving Congress, Saund served his community as Secretary of the Stockton Gurdwara. While bigger Gurdwaras have been built in America, Stockton Gurdwara Sahib retains its importance in both the religious history of North American Shikhs and California history. The Gurdwara remains a historic temple visited by high members of the religion and has been designated a California Historical Landmark. It serves as a symbol of the diverse population that has developed San Joaquin County into the community it is today.

SASSY PANTS BOUTIQUE BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
Although the fight for a matching wardrobe may prove difficult, Sassy Pants Boutique is a fashionable, creative outlet for both mother and child.
44
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2014
FASHION
she explains, “and I said ‘just hurry up Sassy Pants!’ I literally thought at that moment, if I ever get the chance to open my store, that will be the name.” In March of 2011, she got her chance, and Sassy Pants Boutique found its home at Lincoln Center. She grew up shopping there, so the location was no question. The boutique mirrored her passion and vision with an array of styles and price points. Pinpointing European, funky, and classic styles, Sassy Pants offers an array of clothing, accessories, shoes, blankets, toys, books, children’s luggage and backpacks, and baptism and communion attire. Since the 2011 opening, Sassy Pants has moved to a larger building in Lincoln Center. This has allowed for an expansion in product, and Karp is excited to be carrying a larger inventory of fun gifts like books, toys and jewelry. Be sure to make your way to Sassy Pants for the remainder of the holiday season. The shop is stocked with amazing, adorable outfits for the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday. And Sassy Pants is welcoming the Spring season with their extensive line of bright, vivid colors and funky, fun styles. The adorable boutique and amazing styles available are a perfect reflection of the passion and excitement that drives Karp. Her father (and biggest supporter) once told her, “To be successful, you have to do something that you know and love.” The growing success of Sassy Pants is surely due to her passion and knowledge. The children of San Joaquin County will be styling and smiling for years to come!
Most women cannot fight the temptation to ‘ooh and awe’ at the precious sight of teeny, tiny suits, socks and jumpers. Angela Scannavino Karp, a Stockton native, is no different. Throughout her college years, she dreamt of owning a women’s boutique. But, after having her own children, her interest moved toward children’s attire. “When I began shopping for my own children, I realized how fun it was to dress them! With kids, there are just so many cute, bright, over-the-top looks to choose from,” Karp explains. Although she’s a professional now, she was not exempt from the sometimes tedious and stressful struggles dealt with when dressing a child. Most have found themselves tempted to let their child out in the ridiculous ensemble of their choice in order to avoid an argument, but, as Karp exclaims, “There is peace (and fashion) found in meeting in the middle!” When asked if she allows her children to dress themselves, she replies, “Yes, but not entirely by choice! My daughter is very opinionated. My son has always been easy… So when she came along, with an opinion of her own, we had to meet in the middle. Now, for the most part, we agree and I have learned to let both of them express their personalities through their wardrobe.” Karp’s children have always been a staple in her business. Even influencing the name, Sassy Pants Boutique. “I was getting my daughter out of the car when she was about three,”

This 100-year-old brick building housing our final two stops is a unique place to eat and drink. The Dancing Fox Winery and Bakery strives to keep the good ole days alive by creating a “fanciful” atmosphere filled with antique furniture and murals. The restaurant offers a variety of European and American-style dishes made from locally grown ingredients when possible, as well as wine selections from the owner’s family vineyard. In fact, even the bread is made fresh, using organic grains naturally leavened from a culture created from the Lewis family vineyard’s petite sirah grapes, then baked in their Llopis wood-fired oven. Try the Ode to the Islands Pancakes with white chocolate chips and macadamia nuts, bananas, whipped cream and toasted coconut, or The Tango, one of their signature wood-fired pizzas with mushrooms, leeks, sun-dried tomatoes, mixed Italian cheeses and a creamy garlic sauce. SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2014
The San Joaquin area can be very proud of its heart care. Renowned for their skill and state-of-the-art facilities, heart centers in the area have achieved numerous technical innovations and received countless awards. But apart from the dazzling machinery and surgical bays, San Joaquin heart centers can also boast innovation in one too-often underplayed area of heart care: the overall patient experience.
ALICIA STOOP

Born with a defective heart valve, it was only a matter of time before Alicia Stoop was told the thing she feared the most: she needed open heart surgery. While she knew she had no choice in the matter, Stoop also knew she had options about where she could have the procedure done and who would tackle it. Determined to fight her fears and take power over the situation, Stoop got references from her physician and did her research. She was leaning toward St. Joseph’s-close to her Manteca home, and with a great reputation but wanted to know more. She spoke with Joann Marks in the Heart Center, who invited Stoop and her family to tour the facility. Then they met surgeon Dr. James Morrissey, and they were sold. The surgery went off without a hitch, and within days Stoop was going through cardiac rehab at St. Joseph’s. She had her surgery a year ago the end of February, and by April she was back to gardening (carefully). Stoop can’t be more enthusiastic about her heart care experience, and credits the skills of Dr. Morrissey, the nurses and cardiac rehab specialists with her smooth path to a healthy heart.

would never know it has been in the area less than 40 years. Before 1974, anyone with a serious heart condition was directed to Sacramento or the Bay Area for surgical procedures. After 1974, more heart patients could stay closer to home, and they have Dr. Morrissey to thank. Despite some initial resistance in the beginning (“the San Joaquin area isn’t ready for it,” and so forth), Morrissey was invited to Stockton to start a heart care program. The rest, as they say, is history. Over the years, Dr. Morrissey has seen--and been a part of--massive technological achievements in the area of cardiac surgery, including minimally invasive and off-pump techniques. And when it comes to the personal touch, Dr. Morrissey is completely on board. “These days, a lot of care is getting fragmented,” he says. “So I’m happy to talk to patients and answer their questions whenever I can.” Such personalized experience is a constant before the procedure, during it (obviously) and after. While post-surgical patients tend to be tentative, understandably, it can slow down recovery time. St. Joseph’s Cardiac Rehab Center gives patients a safe place to exercise their newly fixed hearts. Staff members are all certified in cardiac physical therapy. They constantly monitor a patient’s pulse, heart rate and so forth, so problems don’t crop up unexpectedly. And they are backed up by physicians on rounds and the nearby ER. Cardiac rehab also provides emotional support. As Marks has observed, it’s almost a familial atmosphere. Again, you’re often working alongside others who have gone through what you have and can provide support. And you’re working with professionals who genuinely care about your recovery. When experience meets with compassion, and personal care meets technology, you have a truly winning heart care combination.

DAVID CARAVEO
FLIGHT MEDIC: Rescue course instructor for the California State CONDITION: Heart attack (with history of diabetes) PROCEDURE:
Fire Marshal
5-bypass surgery
Over 30+ years as an EMT, firefighter and flight medic, David Caraveo has been responsible for saving many lives. Imagine his surprise when he found the tables turned, and it was his life that needed saving. While doing yardwork one day, Caraveo got breathless and felt a crushing pain in his chest. His doctor later confirmed that he’d indeed had a heart attack. During a scheduled angioplasty, his condition was deemed so extreme that he was immediately referred to Dr. James Morrissey for open heart surgery. All in all, Dr. Morrissey had to clear five blockages. The only reason Caraveo had survived was because two of the major arteries actually branched around blockages to keep blood flowing. Just as spectacular was Caraveo’s recovery. The entire ordeal took place at the end of January/ beginning of February. By May, Caraveo got his doctor’s okay to teach a swift water rescue class. And by June, he was cleared to get back on a helicopter. After all he’d been through, Caraveo had only two percent damage to his heart. That was more than five years ago. Today, Caraveo feels better than ever, often outpacing his younger cohorts.

2319 Pacific Ave., Stockton | (209) 941-9070 | midtowncreperie.com
A frequent traveler to New Orleans, Mathew Grizzle, who owns this Miracle Mile creperie along with wife Melissa, wanted to bring those flavors back to the West Coast. Utilizing locally sourced ingredients, this N’awlins-inspired restaurant specializes in (you guessed it) decadent and innovative crepes. With seven crepe batter options (including gluten-free), they offer a plethora of savory or sweet crepe variations to satisfy any palate. Beignets, Belgian waffles, Pain Perdu (French toast made with Genova French bread), and omelets balance out the menu. Craving some jambalaya to cure that hangover? This is the place. A carafe of Fleur de Lis or Wild Blooming Hibiscus Royale is likely to perk you up, regardless of the state from which you awoke. With a new two-story location right next door to their old site, Midtown Creperie & Café has now doubled their seating capacity—almost eliminating wait times at this popular breakfast locale. As they say in New Orleans, “Laissez les bons temps rouler!” (Let the good times roll!)

Breakfast
club
Eating breakfast out is one of those things that has to be done right to make it worth the while. Luckily, we here in San Joaquin County have plenty of options to fulfill that need, from greasy spoon diners, to waterfront views, to high-end farm-to-table fare. Many (in fact, most) of the breakfast spots on our list have developed a cult-like following, so while you may have to wait to be seated, it’s a small price to pay for the food and the service you’ll receive. Indeed, just one bite of a crepe at Midtown, the Poor Man’s Benedict at Avenue, or a giant pancake at Chuck’s, may make you want to start a Breakfast Club of your own. If you’re looking for a local place to break your fast, look no further.

There’s a cozy fireplace for the cold winter months and a large beautiful outdoor patio for those warm summers. The patio, which overlooks the Stockton Delta and has direct boat access, is perfect for large parties and banquets with big umbrellas and a giant canopy. Bob’s was “The place to go on the Delta,” according to the Stockton Record twelve years ago, and they’re still holding that title! In business since 1982, the breakfast at Bob’s (think eggs, omelets, French toast, and bacon) remain both large and popular among their dedicated patrons.

This sense of family translates to its customers— Chuck’s Hamburgers has an entire page on their website dedicated to their regular patrons. They wanted to provide a total experience that encouraged family interaction with each other as well as the food not to mention the personal interaction from their family to those families that come in and most come often.

PACIFIC GROVE: A Romantic Gem
76
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2014
When February comes around and we start to think of a Valentine’s Day escape, one of the first destinations we think about is the Monterey area. World famous Carmel or Pebble Beach on this famed peninsula may initially come to mind, but one of our personal favorites is the quaint seaside community of Pacific Grove. Even though just a few years ago Life Magazine’s Sunday supplement named it “the most romantic town in the west”, we still believe it’s not as well-known as it should be. The fact that a couple of its main points of interest are the popular Lover’s Point, Lover’s Point Park and Lover’s Point Beach immediately hikes up the town’s cupid factor. It’s also

known as Butterfly Town USA, as each autumn the migrating stunningly beautiful Monarchs arrive at the city’s protected Grove Sanctuary for winter sheltering. A mutual love affair has developed with the local town folk who take the ongoing protection of the gorgeous nectar sipping Lepidoptera very seriously. Although there are numerous things to do and places to see in town, we are concentrating on a couple of the city’s enchanting lodging and dining hallmarks. To further entice your interest, even beyond the romance aspect, check out the official Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce informative website at www.pacificgrove.org.

WHERE TO STAY:
LOCATION: THE BEACH HOUSE RESTAURANT
With around 30 lodging choices of small hotels, inns and B & B’s, readers should easily find one that will meet most lodging expectations and budget for a cherished honeymoon, anniversary celebration or any romantic special occasion. Just keep in mind there are no huge hotels, mega-resorts or spas like you’ll find in Pebble Beach, Carmel or Monterey, but not to worry. Our recommendation is to try booking one of the very special inns right on the bay front for the maximum sentimental remembrance. We’ve stayed at one very special inn that easily embraces ongoing romance or a fledgling courtship. So, first and foremost on our recommended list is the very upscale family owned and operated Seven Gables Inn. This 25-room quintessential boutique oceanfront property has been directly hit by cupid’s arrow. Known for its appearance on a long running Visa TV commercial, it has also been named one of the country’s 10 most romantic inns in the U.S. by American Historic Inns. No argument there! Spectacular views from every room overlook Monterey Bay, the Pacific Ocean, Lover’s Point, the rocky coastline, and the distant mountain range. Amour awaits! Strolls around the inn’s colorful gardens, on the nearby beaches

and along shoreline walkways can be inspiring outings. And be sure to be on the lookout for frolicking sea otters, harbor seals and spouting/breeching whales. We know this is not the norm, but the whales were in full display close to shore from the inn’s windows during our most recent visit. To enhance your stay, this historic inn includes a complimentary full breakfast, an evening specialty cheese and local wine offering, fresh homemade cookies later in the evening, limited parking and Wi-Fi. Fireplaces and spa tubs are available in some rooms. One minor caveat: There are no phones or TVs in the rooms, but if you’re really there for a romantic getaway, who needs ‘em? To further pique your interest, check out the exceptional celebratory packages, stunning property photos and more details on their inviting website www. thesevengablesinn.com. Although we haven’t lodged at any of the other upscale bay front inns personally, their reputations
as well. One in particular is the stately Green Gables Inn, operated by the highly regarded Four Sisters group and recently named one of the Top 50 Small Hotels in the country by Conde Nast Traveler. This scrupulously restored 11-room Queen Anne Victorian, built in 1888, has a similar location, amenities and views provided by Seven Gables. www.greengablesinnpg.com. If your budget is tight, you might wish to consider Lover’s Point Inn. This motel-type property’s most important factor is obvious: location! Complimentary continental breakfast, parking and Wi-Fi are included, and be sure to check out their special romance packages online. The rate we secured was around $65/night on Travelocity. www.loverspointinnpg.com

Absolutely the most romantic setting in town is The Beach House restaurant overlooking Lover’s Point Beach, the Bay and the distant skyline of Monterey. For years, this landmark property was the very popular Old Bathhouse Restaurant. Unfortunately, it was closed for around eight years waiting for the right new owners to do the required retrofitting and upgrades, but it was worth the wait. It’s better than ever! Our dinner and service were superb, and the nighttime lights across the water gave us a sentimental night we’ll long remember. www.beachhousepg.com. One of our local dining faves is Passionfish, featuring sustainable seafood and organically grown vegetables, award-winning wines and professional service. Locals have voted it as their “favorite restaurant” two years in a row, and any restaurant with the word passion in its name conjures up a loving foodie adventure. www.passionfish.net. Fandango, in our eyes, has the most romantic upscale ambience of all of the town’s restaurants. When you consider their twentyfive year history of gourmet Mediterranean/Europeaninspired cuisine, proficient service and an award-winning wine list, it all adds up to a memorable dinner outing. www.fandangorestaurant.com. Serving sustainable seafood, organically grown vegetables, award-winning wine, and superb desserts nightly from 5pm. Reservations are recommended at all three restaurants, especially on the weekends. Pacific Grove not only offers delightful romantic possibilities, but keep in mind if you’re seeking water activities, world class golfing or that important relaxing, rejuvenating and tranquil getaway, this seaside destination is a no-brainer choice.
Our travel team, Don the writer/editor and Ann the photographer/researcher, head up to western British Columbia, Canada to bring our readers a personal look at Vancouver, Victoria and more as a premier vacation destination in our March edition.

BATH AND MORE: LOCAL BUSINESS WITH A RE-PURPOSE BY KIMBERLY STREDNEY
Denise and DeWayne Konz started their family business in 1996. A plumber for over 35 years, DeWayne specialized in repairing and selling antique plumbing fixtures, and Denise loved computers. The couple decided to merge their two passions together and start an Internet business. DeWayne picked out products and manufacturers, Denise designed a website, and the business was based out of their home to keep costs and overhead down.
“We want to inspire customers to see things differently and to find a use for old items.” Denise recalls, “You didn’t have to pay to be in search engines, [you would] just secure a spot on the top by having the most hits. Within the first couple of years, the business took off.” When it came time to expand to a brick and mortar storefront, according to Denise, “We chose Lodi because we fell in love with downtown several years ago after the revitalization. We wanted to bring several of our passions under one roof, and love going to work every day.” Ultimately, they fused their experience and expertise with antique and reproduction plumbing – items like Clawfoot tubs, Pedestal Sinks and Pull Chain Toilets – with a love of finding and repairing antiques

and bringing old furniture back to life with paint. They are also big on repurposing old items into something new. “DeWayne makes beautiful benches made from old bed frames, cabinets from old drawers and farmhousestyle tables made from 150-yearold wood,” Denise shares. “We want to inspire customers to see things differently and to find a use for old items,” she continues. One of their best selling products is Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. “When we find a product that we love, it shows in our sharing it with customers.” They even hold demonstration workshops where customers can bring in their own furniture pieces to be painted for $95, which includes supplies and instruction. Aside from Denise and DeWayne, when you visit the Lodi store you might run into their children – Dena, Derick and Amy; their grandkids – Jackson, Isabel and Nathaniel; Mom, Catherine; or one of the shop pets – Emma, Roo and Brinx.

LODI DESIGN & LANDSCAPE BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
Matt Foster Owner
86
Matt Foster has a green thumb and a knack for landscape design. His experience and interest date back to his college years. As a student, Foster studied horticulture and landscape design. He reminisces of changed times, laughing, “I used to hand draw designs with a pencil and ruler, but today, it’s the computer age.” In 1997, Matt opened his home-based business, Lodi Design and Landscape. Serving the San Joaquin, Calaveras, Amador, Sacramento and Stanislaus counties, Foster is a one-stop shop. His years of experience and connections fuse together to help create your backyard oasis. Lodi Design and Landscape has access to hundreds, if not thousands, of different greenery choices--from a basic Burch tree to specialty plants from all over the Untied States. “We can get as extensive and exotic as the client wishes,” Foster explains. But, his most popular options come from local green houses and professional wholesale growers. Specializing in residential makeovers, Foster is also capable of designing, building and installing your customized personal touch. “Whether it be a walkway through the yard, an arbor, or an accent,” he offers. Lodi Landscape and Design also has access to an array of respected subcontractors, allowing for large concrete areas, slabs for hot tubs, archway and patio creation – all customized for the client! So, what should one expect when considering a yard makeover? Foster believes that first you have to consider your lifestyle. “If you don’t want a lot of maintenance, use plant material that is small in scale and is heat tolerant,” he explains. It is
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2014
also important to consider space, amount of sun and the entertainment scale. For those considerations, Foster chimes in with a catchy mantra: “The right plant, right feature, right place and right reason.” He advises that while some may be looking for a sustainable garden, others are looking for an outdoor living space, and it is crucial to identify what is best and right for you. Other important considerations include the desired upkeep level, water usage, lighting, irrigation, and color pallets, just to name a few. Regardless of your dream, Lodi Landscape and Design will help you conceptualize and create. Not to mention, Foster will be there to assist you in every step, even offering quarterly and yearly maintenance after the completion of your new project. And don’t worry, he will call you back. Foster understands the frustration behind a lack of communication and availability. “When someone is investing time and money into a project, it’s important to be respectful and available,” he concludes. So, if you are one of many looking to turn your boring backyard into a gorgeous, welcoming getaway, Lodi Landscape and Design is the perfect place to begin and end your design journey.

PEKING: A FAMILY AFFAIR
For over a generation, Peking restaurant and the Chu family have built a legacy for fine Mandarin Chinese cuisine in Stockton. However, Peking Restaurant isn’t resting on its laurels in 2014 – it has a new decor and dessert menu for its 35th year in operation.

food&wine “A lot of our customers come in every week, but even so we wanted to give the restaurant a new look,” says owner William Chu. “We changed the interior with new colors and decor that provide a new, but warm feel.” While the interior design may have changed, the quality of the menu hasn’t changed over the years, whether it is third-generation customers or first-time visitors who learn about the restaurant through its social media campaigns on Facebook and other sites. “Our first-time guests fall in love with the restaurant immediately and tell us they are coming back,” says Chu. “They enjoy the combination of friendly servers, helpful staff and good food cooked in an efficient manner.” STELLAR SERVICE:
High-quality customer service has been the foundation for the restaurant’s success for over three decades. Along with being attentive to their guest needs, Peking restaurant also maintains a consistency with its menu items that encourages repeat customers to have new experiences. “I started working here as a child,” says Chu. “I have seen all sides of the business, so we know what is needed to

make our guests happy.” Most of the employees at peaking restaurant are members of the Chu family, so providing a family-like atmosphere is natural. “I have my uncles who work here, and they make it easier for us to have better service and keep the family home feeling at a public restaurant,” says Chu. “We have built our family name and legacy through this restaurant, and we want to make sure our customers keep coming back.” MARVELOUS MENU:
The large and appetizing menu at Peking Stockton is what allows customers to enjoy dozens of different dining experiences. The roots of the restaurant’s menu are from North China, with Mandarin and Szechuan cooking styles that use fairly mild spices, fresh vegetables and meats. “We make our own sweet-and-sour sauce inhouse, which definitely adds to the flavor of our food,” says Chu. “Our customers can really taste the difference, and they like it even more.” The most popular entrée is the hot braised fish, a fried whole fish braised with green onions in a spicy ginger sauce. Another item that incorporates the
homemade sweet-and-sour sauce is the sweet-andsour rock cod entrée. The cod is fresh from the San Francisco Bay and is deep-fried to a golden brown and topped with the homemade sauce. The other braised fish entrée is the Shandong braised fish, served with fresh vegetables and black mushrooms and a Chinese anise and pepper sauce. A steamed fish entrée served with julienned fresh ginger and green onions in a house Chinese wine sauce is another popular fish option. “In our culture, fish is the traditional item to have during dinner to mark a celebration,” says Chu. We are happy that our customers get to take part in this tradition in their own way.” The rest of the menu is complete with both traditional and unique items including beef, lamb, mu shu, poultry and soup. The newest additions to the Peking restaurant menu are the dessert options including three different 92

types of cheesecake: original with cherries, white chocolate raspberry, and chocolate caramel. Hot coffee has also been added to complete the new dessert menu. “I feel like before nobody ever wanted to have dessert in Asian restaurants – it seemed out of place for them,” says Chu. “It is a lot different now that we are offering it; people like it and we can fulfill all of their dessert needs with the same high-quality food and service. It has definitely been a change for the better.”

WINE PICKS
L OCAL L ODI THIS MONTH'S PICKS FROM THE LODI WINE AND VISITOR CENTER
One of Lodi’s newest winemakers – so new, she just started working with Bokisch Vineyards at the beginning of this past December – is already showing a magic touch with Lodi-grown grapes. It is a touch that grew out of a long and steady pursuit of her passion – first, for unusually aromatic wines, and then for turning aromatic grapes into her own unusual wines. For Elyse Egan Perry, winemaker/owner of tiny Egan Cellars (egancellars.com), moving to Lodi is a culmination of a path first etched out nine-and-a-half years ago when she and her husband (Jeff Perry) were on their honeymoon in Spain. “That’s when I tasted my first Albariño,” Elyse recalls, “and found things I had never found in a wine before – really bright, beautiful aromatics like lemon curd and citrus blossoms with high acidity and a real, pure sense of fruit expression. Until then, I was never really into California Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc – Albariño was the first white wine that I really liked.” After living in the San Francisco Bay Area for 17 years, Elyse started doing the usual grunge work in wineries in Napa Valley and nearby Solano County. All the while, she kept visiting Lodi as an enthusiastic consumer because this is where she found the wines she loved best. As a member of 94
Lodi’s Newest Winemaker Has The Magic Touch BY RANDY CAPAROSO Exclusive to San Joaquin Magazine
Bokisch Vineyards’ Salut! Tasting Club, she got the opportunity to cozy up to Markus and Liz Bokisch, who specialize in Lodi-grown Spanish wine grapes. “Right before the 2011 harvest,” she tells us, “a deal that I had made for some Lake County Tempranillo fell through at the last minute. I mentioned this to Liz at a tasting at Lodi Cellar Door, and a few days later I got a call from Markus, who said that he found an extra ton of Tempranillo from his Liberty Oaks Vineyard for me.” Thus, the launch of Egan Cellars. In 2011, Bokisch also found some Albariño for Elyse, which would go into her first release, the 2012 Egan Cellars Terra Alta Vineyard Lodi Albariño ($18). This dry white wine has an effusive bouquet of honeyed apricot and peach, stretched tautly like a live wire in lemony tart, mouthwatering sensations, while smoothed out by viscous, silky texturing. The alcohol of Elyse’s Albariño is a light and breezy 12.1% -- a reflection of her contemporary style, which she says is consciously “more food friendly... especially for Thai and other spicy Asian foods.” According to Elyse, “I really try to be true to the variety in my wines – picking at lower Brix (i.e. grape sugar readings) to avoid the higher alcohol and sweet taste more typical of California wines. Since working with my first vintage, I found that that I could get all the acidity and aromatics I need by picking Albariño earlier, but can increase textural qualities by aging in a combination of neutral oak and stainless steel. While Elyse is already showing a magic touch with Albariño, her 2011 Egan Cellars Liberty Oaks Vineyard Tempranillo ($25) may be even more impressive: sharply defined, bright and upbeat strawberry/ cherry aromas tinged with meaty, butcher shop notes; couched in a medium body (13.9% alcohol) that feels both zesty and fleshy and unperturbed by moderated tannin and virtually invisible oak (despite 18 months spent in a combination of neutral French and American barrels). “A few months ago,” Elyse says, “the
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2014
2011 Tempranillo was showing more vanillin oak qualities in the nose, but recently that seems to have disappeared, which is fine for me because I like the emphasis on fruit, not wood.” Elyse’s brimming enthusiasm will be a welcome addition to Lodi’s winemaker community, particularly because of her
penchant for grape purity in lighter, crisper, less oak-influenced permutations: a style of wine clearly preferred by a good chunk of the latest generation (i.e. Millennials) of wine drinkers.
Randy Caparoso is the multi-award winning sommelier/restaurateur and longtime wine journalist who also pens the blog for the Lodi Winegrape Commission’s lodiwine.com.
Wine Tours & Tastings The Lodi winemaking industry has enjoyed tremendous expansion in the last decade. The land devoted to vineyards has increased from 46,000 acres in 1996 to nearly 100,000 today. Now the region produces more fine wine than Napa and Sonoma combined! The Lodi appellation is proudly blowing away the mists of anonymity that have shrouded local wines, allowing them to bask in the sunshine of worldwide recognition. We invite you to take a short ride and discover Lodi Wine Country for yourself.

WINERY OF THE MONTH
VINO CULTURE
Lodi Wine & Visitor’s Center BY KELLY POLLARD
The Lodi Wine and Visitor’s Center is the perfect gateway to the vibrant wine region of Lodi. This tasting room housed within the famed Wine & Roses Hotel, Restaurant and Spa complex offers over two hundred wines from local wineries. The Visitor’s Center pours eight wine tastings daily and rotates the tasting menu weekly to offer a variety of whites and reds to its thirsty visitors. The staff is fun and friendly, just as you would expect from a quality tasting room. On our visit, while sipping a delicious white blend from Abundance, we learned that Lodi is one of the oldest winery regions in California. Many growers continued to cultivate grapes during Prohibition, selling grapes with poorly disguised instructions on how to convert the juice into wine. Lodi is famous for its “old vine” Zinfandel grapes with vines that date back to the 1850s. The region produces over 30 percent of California’s Zinfandel grapes, and Lodi County’s harvest consists of twothirds red varieties. Staff members at the Visitor’s Center are happy to point out the best wineries to visit based on what type of wine you favor. Pick up a complimentary Lodi winery map, and chart your day based on where your favorite wines are located. If you are feeling tech-savvy, download the Lodi wine app to your smart phone for an interactive wine tasting experience with recommendations for wineries, restaurants and events happening in the Lodi region. If you can tear yourself away from the tast-
96
ing bar, step outside and wander through the demonstration vineyard to learn more about the science behind growing a quality grape. The Lodi Wine and Visitor’s Center also offers unique and handcrafted gift items, perfect to give to your Valentine this month. If you want to splurge, make a weekend out of your stop at the Center by reserving a room at the luxurious Wine & Roses Resort, which offers an award-winning restaurant, spa treatments and wellappointed rooms. If you can’t get enough wine, think about joining their LoCA Wine Club, where you receive three to four bottles of wine – many that have a limited distribution – four times a year. Make the Lodi Wine and Visitor’s Center your first stop during the famous Wine & Chocolate Weekend February 8th and 9th, where wines are paired with delicious chocolates to bring out their complimentary flavors. Each participating winery will host chocolate and wine pairings, and many will also offer live music, barrel tastings, cellar tours and much more. After all, nothing screams romance more than wine and chocolate. Happy tasting!

IN SEASON BLOOD ORANGES
BLOOD ORANGES BY JESSICA RUDOLPH
Within the next month or so, those living in the Central Valley will be blessed with the sweet aroma of orange blossoms, which means now is the time of year to enjoy this amazing fruit. Blood oranges are a variety of orange with a crimson, almost bloodcolored flesh. Typically, they’re smaller than average oranges and the skin is usually pitted. The flesh

develops the maroon color when it ripens in low temperatures during fall and winter. Originating in the Mediterranean region, the three most common types are the Tarocco (native to Italy), the Sanguinello (native to Spain) and the Moro, which is the newest variety and most colorful. Here in the states, our blood oranges are grown in Texas and
California. With their distinctive raspberry-like, tart and bitter taste they are a popular ingredient in vinaigrette-style dressings, marmalade, gelato, sorbet and they are sometimes even used to flavor nichemarket beer.

Butter for greasing pan • 3 Blood Oranges 1 Cup Sugar • ½ Cup Plain Yogurt 3 Large Eggs • 2/3 Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 ¾ Cups All Purpose Flour • 1 ½ tsp. Baking Powder ¼ tsp. Baking Soda • Whipped Cream for Serving (Optional)
Place ricotta in a sieve lined with cheesecloth, place in refrigerator, and let the ricotta drain for several hours or overnight. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Fit a parchment circle into the bottom of a 7-inch springform pan. Make crust: Combine graham-cracker crumbs and 2 tablespoons sugar in a small bowl. Stir in melted butter with a fork until crumbs are moistened. Press into bottom of pan, and bake for 10 minutes. Place lemon juice in a small bowl, and sprinkle gelatin over the surface. Set aside for 10 minutes to soften. In a small, heavy saucepan, beat egg yolks until smooth. Whisk in milk. Gradually whisk in remaining 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar. Add salt. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture coats the back of a spoon, about 7 minutes. Do not allow to boil. Transfer to a bowl, and stir. Stir in softened gelatin, orange zest, and vanilla, mixing until gelatin is completely dissolved. Set custard aside. Place drained ricotta in the bowl of a food processor and process until smooth. Add cream cheese and process again until smooth. With machine running, add warm custard and process just long enough to combine. Transfer to a bowl and fold in whipped cream. Pour mixture into the prepared pan, cover, and chill overnight. Place a candied orange slice in center of cake. Pour glaze over top, tipping cake pan to cover completely. Chill for 1 hour or until glaze is set. To unmold, wrap a hot towel around sides of pan to help release cake, and run a thin knife around the inside of the pan. Carefully remove outside of pan. Slide onto a serving plate, and chill until ready to serve.
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan. Grate zest from 2 oranges and place in a bowl with sugar. Using your fingers, rub ingredients together until orange zest is evenly distributed in sugar. Supreme an orange: Cut off bottom and top so fruit is exposed and orange can stand upright on a cutting board. Cut away peel and pith, following curve of fruit with your knife. Cut orange segments out of their connective membranes and let them fall into a bowl. Repeat with another orange. Break up segments with your fingers to about 1/4-inch pieces. Halve remaining orange and squeeze juice into a measuring cup; you’ll will have about 1/4 cup. Add buttermilk or yogurt to juice until you have 2/3 cup liquid altogether. Pour mixture into bowl with sugar and whisk well. Whisk in eggs and olive oil. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Gently stir dry ingredients into wet ones. Fold in pieces of orange segments. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake cake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until it is golden and a knife inserted into center comes out clean. Cool on a rack for 5 minutes, then unmold and cool to room temperature right-side up. Serve with whipped cream if desired. WWW.SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

FINAL THOUGHTS
The
Anti-
VALENTINE BY KELLY POLLARD
I began to despise Valentine’s Day as soon as I hit middle school. Let’s just say I wasn’t the most popular girl with the boys. A mouth full of braces mixed with an unfortunate perm that gave me thick, wiry curls resembling a frizzed fro definitely didn’t help my attractiveness. The only time the boys really talked to me was to ask very sweetly if they could copy my algebra homework. I despised the other girls with boyfriends that filled their lockers with balloons and chocolate and oversized teddy bears every February. My similarly jilted girlfriends and I would spend the day at school glaring at the couples holding hands under a cloud of pink and red balloons. We’d pass each other snarky notes with anti-Valentine comments. Then we’d go home and drown our sorrows in tubs of ice cream and Corey Haim movies. Of course, my braces eventually came off and the bad hair grew out. Yet, once I started dating, a new phenomenon occurred. I called it the “break up 114

before Valentine’s Day” pattern. High school guys seemed to let a chill overtake their romantic hearts late January or early February. Then behold, I’d be newly broken up, without that coveted Valentine and even more jaded. Yes, my relationship to February 14th is a bit complicated. I’m not a fan of the expectations of it, the Hallmark/chocolate/flower industry conspiracy to make men buy certain things on a certain day because everyone else is doing it. Of course, I had a great stretch of Valentine’s Days in my newlywed years. My husband would sweep in with a bouquet of roses, chocolates and a sweet card. He’d whisk me off on dinner dates where we’d share a bottle of expensive wine. Then the children came. I found myself barely recovered from Christmas when February rolled around. I’d lament that I had yet another holiday to manage. Valentine’s Day turned into helping my sons make thirty individual Valentine goody bags for
their classmates, which really meant me assembling the goodies while they stole chocolates, meaning I’d have to go to the store to buy even more chocolate, plus a bottle of wine to get me through this candycoated assembly line. The truth is, I love my husband the same on Valentine’s Day as on any other day. I’d appreciate a date night any night, but I’m not motivated enough to fight for dinner reservations or to seek out a babysitter who doesn’t have her own Valentine to take her out. Now, my older son is edging toward the same pre-teen, awkward zone I was in twenty years ago. I shudder inwardly at the thought of him getting rejected when he asks that certain girl to the Valentine’s Day dance. He does have one thing going for him—at least there is no chance of him suffering through that awful, permed hair phase. Plus, he will always have me as his forever Valentine.
