54 SURVIVING A BROKEN HEART

Traditionally this is the month for lovers and all things romance related, but February also serves as a reminder to take care of our heart physically. American Heart Month, celebrated each year in February, is an annual celebration that began in 1963 to encourage Americans to join the battle against heart disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women not only in the United States, but worldwide. The term ‘heart disease’ covers any disorder of the heart. CDC also estimates that one in every four deaths is related to heart disease and heart disease costs the United States about $219 billion each year. By Deirdre Carlson

GEARING UP FOR THE BEST

It’s here! It’s here! Our 14 Annual Best Of Ballot is here! Every year we get excited to produce our annual Best Of issue (July) and it takes a lot of prep work.

“Excellence is not being the best; it’s doing your best.”

That’s why we’re opening voting in February, so our readers can weigh in on all of their favorite San Joaquin businesses. With categories from best appetizer to best dentist, we truly cover every category we can think of. And, when the issue comes out, readers are granted with a generous guide that holds more clout than a Yelp review. This year we’re including more categories than ever before, to bring readers a complete guide of the “best” businesses in the county. And here’s how it works: winners are 100 percent determined by readers. We collect and tally ballots from thousands of entries to come up with the top three (and sometimes four) winners in every category. Our staff doesn’t vote and we don’t favor one business over another. Every choice is completely made by you. So, help us out—and your fellow San Joaquinians—by casting a vote for your favorite businesses around. You can vote once per day in every category, which gives you a lot of opportunity to spread the love. Want to get started? Head to our website: sanjoaquinmagazine.com And because this is an even-numbered year, that means we’ll be celebrating our winners with our bi-annual Best Of Party where we showcase food and wine from the best businesses in town (voted by you). Keep your eyes on the magazine in the coming months for more details on the event, and how to buy tickets.

Peace,

TONY ZOCCOLI

THERAPY DOG LAVENDER SPREADS JOY AT THE SJC FAMILY JUSTICE CENTER  BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D

the

Meet Lavender, a three-year-old golden retriever puppy with a very important job. Lavender is employed by the San Joaquin County Family Justice Center in Stockton. Officially, she is a greeter. But the therapy dog does more than shake hands with people who enter the center; she’s also a source of comfort for many while they work to better their lives, sometimes testifying in court against abusers or moving through enrichment programs supported by the FJC. “She has a very sweet gentle disposition,” says Suzanne Schultz, program manager for the FJC, staff member at the local district attorney’s office, and Lavender’s handler. “She will just come and be present by [victims] at a time when people are really going through stuff.” SJMAG.COM

upfront

they are, every person is welcome to hold and pet Lavender as they get help. Before coming to the justice center, Lavender was raised in a prison by a couple of inmates. It’s part of a program called POOCH, a restorative justice program that works with inmates sentenced to life in prison in both Southern California and Ione. There, inmates with zero infractions over a specific period of time can choose to forgo a roommate (a big incentive for many) and have a dog as their cellmate instead. As part of the program, the inmates attend trainings and become the dogs’ first handlers—dogs that will go on to become either personal therapy dogs or facility therapy dogs. Lavender was trained and lived the first two years of her life in Ione. A second inmate is responsible for quality assurance, checking in to make sure the main handler is doing the work. If they are successful and stay out of trouble for the duration of the program, they can have another dog when the first graduates. Lavender’s handler was the first life she changed. Suzanne was told the man, a convicted murderer, said Lavender was the first being he had ever learned to love more than himself. Lavender taught the felon compassion. Lavender has been on the job since June 10, 2019. When she’s working, she wears a vest and she's in work mode, but when Lavender gets home—she lives with her handler Suzanne—she turns into a pet. “I notice the difference between a working dog and a pet,” Suzanne says. When that vests comes off, Suzanne adds, “you can clearly see that her disposition is completely different.”

The FJC sees a lot of victims of sexual or physical abuse including children or families with kids. While even adults seem to benefit from Lavender’s presence, it is the children who truly light up when Lavender comes into a room. “I just see what a difference she makes,” Suzanne says. Suzanne recalls a specific situation where a young girl came in. She had to testify against a man who sexually abused her, which meant revisiting the trying situation. She didn’t want to relive her trauma, but when she saw Lavender, her face lit up. The girl had to travel across state lines just to be there for the trial, and Lavender became a silver lining of an otherwise difficult trip. “Her whole face changed [when she saw Lavender]. For just a few minutes she was happy,” Suzanne recalls. Lavender was able to accompany the young girl to the witness room, where witnesses sit before testifying in court. Here, Lavender has been trained to

sense anxiety, and she will either lay at a person’s feet or rest her chin on their leg while they wait. The entire time she is open for pets. Lavender isn’t yet ready to accompany victims into the courtroom—although that is a goal Suzanne is working toward with her—so the little girl was invited back to the FJC after her trial to see Lavender again. It was clear the little girl had been crying, but when she saw Lavender, she immediately gave her a hug. This is a pretty typical scenario for Lavender. When people walk into the center, she is trained to look for a cue from a worker. When given the go ahead, she approaches them (this is to avoid contact with people who are not comfortable with dogs). At that time, she can shake hands, give hugs and high fives, or even deliver a fist bump. The people who come into the center may be there immediately following a trauma or sometimes they are working toward betterment after enduring a rough trial, but regardless of where

You had us at hello. After 120 years, allow us to reintroduce ourselves. If these walls could talk, they would tell tales of humble beginnings when Father William O’Connor and the people of Stockton gathered in 1899 to celebrate the setting of the hospital’s cornerstone. Or perhaps they’d share the stories of the thousands of lives that have been touched since the doors opened more than a century ago. Through the years, St. Joseph’s Medical Center has grown as our community has grown, continuing to serve the needs of all, while staying true to its roots. The hospital is located where it has always been—on North California Street—ready to serve all who enter its doors seeking healing.

The ALMOND BLOSSOM FESTIVAL RETURNS 20FEB23 TH-

RD

 BY FAITH LEWIS The city of Ripon welcomes an influx of visitors from across the state over the four days of the Almond Blossom Festival each year. With anywhere between 30,000 and 40,000 festival goers, it is a great way to kick off the spring season. But for lifelong Ripon residents, it is about more than the $5 billion-dollar California almond industry or drawing crowds to Ripon. Over the past 58 years, the Almond Blossom Festival has become a deep-rooted part of Ripon’s identity “The goal of the festival is to bring the community together for a series of family friendly activities,” says Kelly Donohue, Presi-

dent and CEO of the Ripon Chamber of Com merce. “This is a chance for local businesses, community members, service organizations, police department, fire department, and city government [and] employees to collaborate together to enrich the community.” Community groups work together to host spaghetti dinners, pancake breakfasts, and bake sales and enjoy the carnival, antique tractor show, and community parade—all traditions linked to the festival. “The Almond Blossom Festival is Ripon,” Kelly says. “It embodies the love we all have for this community.” Some of the most popu-

lar events date all the way back to the first years of the festival, such as Miss Almond Blossom/Miss Ripon. Less of a beauty contest and more a way to encourage community involvement, the contestants have a full schedule of community events to attend leading up to the coronation on Thursday, Feb. 20. They also learn about the history of Ripon and gain public speaking and leadership skills. Another time-tested tradition is the Diaper Derby, hosted by the Mom’s Club of Ripon-Salida. According to Kelly, it’s not uncommon for locals to brag about winning years later as adults. CUDDLE THERAPY

WHY SNUGGLING WITH A LOVED ONE IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

with someone you care about makes you feel good. Whether it’s a significant other or another loved one, quality cuddle time has serious benefits. When you snuggle up with someone you like your body releases the hormones endorphins, oxytocin, and serotonin often referred to as “love hormones,” and these hormones have been linked to encouraging feelings of calmness, reducing stress, and lowering blood pressure. In fact, when oxytocin is released, cortisol (the stress hormone) is reduced. “Human touch has a powerful effect on our lives. Throughout life, humans use touch to interact with others, display affection, seek support, and develop relationships,” says Amanjot K. Deol, MD, chief of behavioral health at Kaiser Permanente Central Valley. In fact, she adds, “touch stimulates tactile nerve endings in the skin.” Some of the main benefits of cuddling include an overall better mood and less stress, but cuddling has been linked to other health benefits, too. Who would have thought that snuggling is physically good for your heart? Before you write it off as a stretch, think about the science behind the fact. If oxytocin is released during cuddling, and oxytocin lowers

SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

blood pressure, then your heart benefits. And while scientists have linked these benefits to both genders, there seems to be more evidence for women. After an injury or during an illness, cuddling can also eliminate or reduce pain by blocking pain signals to the brain. The correlation between cuddling and pain relief (including depression) is so strong that some doctors believe in producing a synthetic form to medicate people after an injury. Physical and mental benefits aside, there are a lot of emotional benefits to snuggling close, too. Science shows that couples who hug, cuddle, and kiss often have higher levels of oxytocin in their blood and as a result are healthier and happier overall. Not to mention, time spent close together, including skin on skin contact, can help couples develop feelings of love toward one another. “Total health is about mind, body, and spirit. And human connection is a vital contribution to your total health,” Dr. Deol says. Cuddling is not only beneficial with your significant other. Science shows cuddling stimulates bonding between child and parent, and those who pet animals often report reduced feelings of stress, loneliness, depression, and illness, as well.

55 GOING ON 14 FOR LEAP YEAR BABIES THE MOST SPECIAL DAY OF THE YEAR ISN'T ON THE CALENDAR  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Leaplings, leapers, leap year babies—they are all terms for people born on February 29, a rarity that about .068 percent of the population experience. But, due to scientific

explanations of how the earth rotates around the sun, we understand that without an extra day every four years, our calendar would be off by 24 days after 100 years. So, what’s it like to be a leap day baby? Lisa Dondero of Stockton knows firsthand. Legally, she’s 55, but she’s only had 13 birthdays—Feb. 29, 2020 she’ll celebrate number 14. “It’s actually pretty cool being born on leap year. People really get a kick out of it,” she says. “I have fun telling them, especially the students I teach, how old I’ll be.”

After a few moments of disbelief, Lisa turns her rare situation into a lesson for her students in the Lincoln Unified School District in Stockton where she’s a teaching assistant for Special Ed/RSP students in grades 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th. “The students… make it a contest to see who will solve the math problem first.” Growing up, Lisa never felt snubbed by her unusual birthday. Often, she says, she would celebrate on February 28 and March 1, once with her family and once with her friends. Every fourth year, she’d do something bigger. “My birthdays on leap year are extra special since it only happens every four years,” she says.

FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL CHILDREN'S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH WHAT TO DO WHEN CAVITIES LOOM

 BY FAITH LEWIS

Contrary to popular belief, tooth pain might not be the first sign of a cavity. “White spots

are often seen in early caries’ development,” says Dr. Rafat Razi, a pediatric dentist based in Tracy. If your child’s teeth develop white spots or they become sensitive to cold or sweet beverages, it’s time to visit the dentist. White spots may start to turn brown as the tooth continues to decay, so take note of any discoloration as well. Even if your child brushes twice daily, it is possible for them to develop a cavity and treating it can be a scary process for child and parent alike. “The clinical exam involves using instruments such as an explorer to find ‘soft’ areas on the tooth that may indicate active carious lesions,” Dr. Razi says. X-rays may also be used to help diagnose cavities. If cavities are found, a second appointment will typical-

ly be scheduled for treatment. When it comes to treatment options, Dr. Razi adds that “the entire patient [and] his or her mouth is evaluated, rather than one tooth.” Your child’s dentist will also consider how well they reacted to the initial exam when deciding the best anesthetic option for a painless and anxiety-free procedure. Typically, the procedure involves a local anesthetic to numb the area. Removing the damaged part of the tooth will require a drill, and while it might sound scary, your

child won’t feel anything more than a little pressure as the dentist works. Once the infection has been removed, the hole will be filled and polished. If needed, additional medication such as laughing gas may be an option. Recovery is quick. The numbing typically lasts a few hours. Dr. Razi recommends parents make sure the child isn’t biting their lips or tongue while still numb. Ibuprofen can be given as instructed to

alleviate discomfort. Believe it or not, getting that first cavity treated is also a preventative measure. The longer the cavity is left, the longer the bacteria are given to spread and cause damage to other teeth. If your child had a cavity, reevaluate and adjust the oral health routine. This is also a great opportunity to look closely at your child’s diet and limit sugary or acidic foods and drinks if needed.

But did you know the dish originated in England where it has even been credited with helping to win the first World War? The plate is loaded with stir fried rice, noodles, firm tofu, eggs, tamarind paste, fish sauce, dried shrimp, garlic, chiles, and palm sugar. PAELLA Paella may just be the ultimate party food for entertaining. Hailing from Valencia, Spain, Paella gets its name from the wide, shallow pan used to cook the dish over an open fire. In its simplest form, a Spanish paella consists of rice, saffron, chicken, and seafood. But that isn’t all. Some folks load the pan up with fresh veggies and mussels, while traditionalists may stick to shrimp and chorizo. Either way, it’s a feast for kings. Skip the airfare to Spain and sample this cuisine local. Try it local: Addy’s Paella offers a variety of accompaniments to their pans. Our favorite is the shrimp, chicken, and sausage. PHO If you’ve never tasted Pho (pronounced fuh), you are missing out. The popular Vietnamese street food starts off with an umami rich beef broth and rice noodles. But the flavor gets kicked up a notch from the fresh herbs, bean sprouts, and thinly shaved meat traditionally added to the top. It is usually made using thinly sliced beef, but there are chicken versions of the comfort food as well. Try it local: Saigon Grill makes a rich broth we love. T

raditionally this is the month for lovers and all things romance related, but February also serves as a reminder to take care of our heart physically. American Heart

Month, celebrated each year in February, is an annual celebration that began in 1963 to encourage Americans to join the battle against heart disease. With such high odds of developing heart disease, we have many local warriors in San Joaquin County that have battled with different forms of it. Four of them have chosen to tell their story on their personal experiences with heart disease, what procedures they went through, and how they overcame the odds to live healthier lives.

Anthony DiSomma HEART PATIENT

DAMERON HOSPITAL

A

nthony DiSomma is no stranger to difficult work. DiSomma (now retired) spent most of his career as an attorney turned judge for 14 years. One night in August 2018, DiSomma suddenly had difficulty breathing and his son brought him into the emergency room at Dameron Hospital where doctors explained to DiSomma that he had a heart attack and needed a quadruple bypass right away. DiSomma, stunned by this news, replied that he would “come back in a few weeks,” but was not sure if he was even going to make it. The team of doctors insisted that DiSomma urgently needed the surgery and he underwent the quadruple bypass the next day. DiSomma was in recovery at Dameron Hospital for one month following the procedure and even had a visiting nurse at home after discharge to help with rehabilitation. DiSomma also was started on dialysis while in the hospital for his worsening kidney issues, which he still continues with today. He remembers feeling nervous prior to the procedure, but cannot not say enough praise about how professional and caring the staff at Dameron was. He specifically discussed his cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Maria Currie, MD, PhD, FRCSC and that “there are not enough adjectives to describe her and the care I received by her and her team.” And although the whole process was a scary one, DiSomma

reports he actually “enjoyed the experience” and had to “change his whole lifestyle around” following the heart attack. Today, DiSomma keeps active by going to the gym at least three times per week and varies his exercise with light weight training, circuit training, or jogging on the treadmill. He explains his current heart health is better than ever and attributes his success to maintaining his weight, taking his medications as prescribed, measuring his blood pressure and blood glucose levels daily, going to hemodialysis, exercises, and most importantly “keeping a positive attitude.”

Why Bypass Surgery?

Doctors recommend heart bypass surgery when one or more of the blood vessels that transport blood to the heart muscles become partially blocked. The medical name for heart bypass surgery is coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) which involves removing a blood vessel from the chest, arms, or legs and using it to create a detour or ‘bypass’ around the blockage. Basically, this allows blood to reach the heart again.

Frank Aceves HEART PATIENT

ST. JOSEPH’S MEDICAL CENTER

F

FRANK ACEVES

rank Aceves had the unfortunate sudden onset of both congestive heart failure and kidney problems at the same time. His daughter, Tina Munoz is a registered nurse and the Operations Manager of Cardiac Services at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. She explained that her father was put on many medications in efforts to better manage both his heart failure and kidney problems but he continued to be re-hospitalized multiple times. Eventually, the team at St. Joseph’s Heart & Vascular Institute suggested that Aceves may be a perfect candidate for the CardioMEMS HF System that was been approved by the FDA in May 2014. On June 1, 2018 Aceves underwent the implantation procedure at St. Joseph’s Heart & Vascular Institute. This procedure and implant technology was so new that Aceves was only the second or third person to receive the implant at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. Aceves continues to have success with the CardioMEMS implant. Every morning he turns on his wedge-shaped pillow, it tells him to lay down, and within 10-20 seconds the pillow takes the real-time readings of the pressures from his heart and electronically sends the information to his local cardiologist Dr. Cyrus Buhari, DO. Depending on those specific readings, Dr. Buhari can then make adjustments (as needed) to Aceves’ medication regimen. But as his daughter Tina explained, this procedure definitely isn’t right

for everyone. You have to be ok with laying down on the pillow and compliant with taking your readings every single day. But Frank Aceves continues with the daily monitoring system, works out in his yard almost every morning, and is grateful for living a healthier life.

What is CardioMEMS?

The CardioMEMS HF System is the first and only FDA-approved wireless heart failure (HF) monitor and is comprised of a battery-free implant that sits permanently in the pulmonary artery, a catheter-based delivery system, and a home communicator (in a wedge shaped pillow) that acquires and processes signals from the device and routes data to healthcare providers. The device was specifically developed for monitory heart and pulmonary artery pressure rates in patients who have been hospitalized for heart failure in the past year. And the CardioMEMS HF System is the only FDA-approved monitoring technology that has demonstrated the ability to significantly reduce heart failure hospitalizations in a largescale clinical trial.

M

ark Miller, or ‘Coach Miller’ as many refer to him, was the football coach at Linden High School for 52 years (though he’s now retired), and he still continues coaching the Linden High School softball team, a job he’s held for 21 years. In February 2003, Miller had a heart attack after softball practice and was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Medical Center where a stent was placed in his heart. He was then transferred to the cardiac intensive care unit for recovery. Two days later, while still in the cardiac intensive care unit, Miller had another heart attack and credits the amazing team in the unit for saving his life. Miller states, “If even one person had dropped the ball I wouldn’t be here. The teamwork I saw at the hospital was incredible.” Over the following months, Miller would undergo multiple procedures to have four total stents placed. Miller was also told by his doctor that he needed to lose weight – and he did. Through diet and exercise Miller lost 150 lbs. in just six months. Later that year, on a hot day in August, Miller collapsed in the heat while in Lodi coaching football. At that point, the team at St. Joseph’s Medical Center strongly recommended he undergo open heart surgery, and Miller remembers being resistant stating “its football season, it may have to wait.” But on August 25, 2003 he underwent triple bypass surgery performed by Dr. James Morrissey, MD, at St. Joseph’s Heart & Vascular Institute and was back coaching on the football field two weeks later. Miller’s story was such a successful one that St. Joseph’s Medical Center chose to feature him in their local ‘Miracles Happen’ campaign. Last year in August Miller underwent another procedure performed by Dr.

TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure to replace a narrowed aortic valve that fails to open properly (aortic valve stenosis). While also being much less invasive than his previous open-heart surgery, the recovery time is remarkably shorter. In fact, Miller reports he was released from St. Joseph’s Medical Center the day after his procedure and was out playing nine holes of golf that afternoon. Coach Miller is not only a success story following multiple heart surgeries, but somehow finds A stent is a very small wire mesh time to give back to tube that is inserted into a narrowed the community and or blocked coronary artery and the hospital that holds the artery open to allow blood helped him. Every to flow freely. Saturday he volunteers at St. Joseph’s Medical Center for the Chapter 040 ‘Mended Hearts of Stockton’ group, which happens to be the largest peer-to-peer heart patient support network in the world. He also volunteers with the ‘No One Dies Alone’ program at St. Joseph’s Medical Center where participants provide compassionate companionship and comforting support to dying patients who would otherwise be alone. Miller strongly affirms that he’s never felt better, and that the scare in 2003 was the origin of his turnaround. Today he continues to eat healthy, has kept the weight off, walks 10,000 steps per day, participates in light exercise and lives by the motto “every day is a gift” and “life is good.. take care of yourself.”

nut Ogaard has lived quite the life. He is a retired Army Veteran and up until 2015 had spent the last 48 years abroad in Germany. He moved back to the United States to marry his fiancée of 49 years (who he met in Southern California) on January 1, 2015. In December 2018, Ogaard was out mowing his lawn when about halfway through he “felt like an elephant was sitting on his chest” and began sweating profusely even though it was only 60 degrees outside. He decided to take a 30-minute break. He went inside and eventually felt good enough to finish mowing his lawn. Fast forward a few months later and Ogaard went in to see his doctor, Dr. Maria Currie, MD, PhD, FRCSC, for a previous aortic valve problem. He eventually underwent a heart catheterization procedure and they found that his aortic valve problem was more serious than expected. In fact, staff explained that if he did not have open heart surgery his heart would either explode or he would have a stroke. So, on March 21, 2019 Knut Ogaard underwent aortic valve replacement surgery, a type of open-heart sur-

gery where the failing aortic valve of a patient's heart is replaced with an artificial heart valve, at Dameron Hospital and spent five days recovering in the intensive care unit. Ogaard believes that Dr. Curry and the team at Dameron saved his life and explains that the open-heart surgery was his thirteenth surgery since retiring from the Army, but was the best care he has ever experienced. Just a few months post-op, Ogaard participated in the 2019 San Joaquin Heart & Stroke Walk put on by the American Heart Association this past fall and was able to walk with Dr. Maria Curry and the nursing staff from Dameron Hospital. Ogaard also completed his six-month cardiac rehabilitation through St. Joseph’s Medical Center in November 2019, and has lost about 12-15 pounds. He explains that it is still frustrating not being able to do 100 percent of everything you want, but he wants to continue with his recovery getting healthier so he can get back to doing what he loves to do, working on cars and motorcycles. Ogaard believes he is lucky. “Not often do you get a second chance in life,” he says.

SPRING BLING THE BEST BULBS FOR A BEAUTIFUL BLOOM  BY FAITH LEWIS

Bulbs can be a gardener’s best friend. Low maintenance and hardy, they will bring beautiful blooms year after year. With so many varieties that are well adapted to dry summers, your garden will be alive with vibrant colors from spring to fall.

BEST BULB CARE Bulb care is generally the same. Bulbs should be planted where they will receive plenty of sunlight and have good drainage so they don’t rot. When in doubt, plant the bulb two to three times deeper than its height. Expert tip: Always be sure bulbs are stored in a cool, dry place to prevent them from molding. Moldy bulbs won’t bloom and the mold can spread underground to kill healthy bulbs nearby. Temperatures in SJ County typically don’t get low enough to need to dig tender bulbs up during the winter; simply cover bulbs with a layer of mulch for added protection.

FEBRUARY GARDEN TASKS STEP BY STEP STEP 1:

STEP 2:

Pick the perfect place for your bulbs. If you don’t have an area with appropriate drainage, plant bulbs in raised flower beds.

Prepare the soil by loosening the dirt and adding bulb fertilizer.

STEP 3:

Place the bulbs at the appropriate depth with the root-side down and pointed side up. Expert tip: If you can’t tell which way the bulb is oriented, plant it sideways and it will find its way above ground as it blooms.

KNOW YOUR BULBS

It’s important to know what you’re planting and when you should plant it. “Tender bulbs” like gladiolus, lilies, caladiums, and dahlia are not tolerant of extremely cold temperatures and prefer to be planted once the weather turns warm. Plant after the last frost of the year for a colorful summer yard. Lilies and agapanthus, however, are happy to be planted in February. Expert tip: Tulips, irises, and daffodils are considered “hardy

bulbs” and need a cold snap before they’ll send up flowers. If you want to plant them soon, try to trick your bulbs by storing them in the fridge for eight to ten weeks to recreate winter-like conditions and be sure to get them in the ground before the weather warms up.

•Watch the forecast and be ready to protect tender plants from cold snaps. •Plant cold season vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and onions. •Plant cold hardy annuals like pansies. •Plant bare root roses and fruit trees.

•Prune spring-flowering bushes: repeat blooming roses, crape myrtles, and butterfly bushes.

Napa is for

Lovers  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Find romance in wine country Lodi is still our number one spot for romance and wine, but if you're looking to get outside of the area Napa is a good second choice. Celebrate your love in Napa, a not-so-hidden oasis among the vineyards. Throughout the wine tasting region, guests can indulge in over-the-top experiences that encourage

romance and togetherness, just in time for Valentine’s Day. It’s a place to splurge. So, sweep your lover off their feet and head into the hills where true love awaits, with a glass of wine in hand.

Experience the love

What’s more romantic than dining at a castle? In Calistoga—within the Napa region—couples can book an exclusive tour and tasting experience at Castello di Amorosa. The packages range from simple tours to more extravagant meals. We recommend splurging on the royal food and wine pairing tour, an award-winning experience that begins with a tour of the 13th-century-inspired castle and its grounds and ends with a seated wine and

food pairing with a personal guide. During the two-and-ahalf-hour tour, guests will sip award winning wines from the regular menu as well as the reserve and library offerings. CastelloDiAmorosa.com Another unique way to experience the wines of Napa Valley is on the Napa Valley Wine Train. The historic train has been fully restored to offer a scenic—and delicious—tour of the vineyards. Book a table aboard the train for one of many excursions. The trains most romantic experience, dubbed Romance on the Rails, begins with sparkling wines, includes a multi-course, gourmet dinner and two glasses of private label wine. Not to mention the gorgeous scenery you’ll pass on the three-hour journey through wine country. WineTrain.com

Capture a new view of Napa from up in the clouds. The vineyards below look different when you’re soaring through the sky in a hot air balloon, a quintessential Napa experience for any set of lovebirds. Book a sunrise flight for an added dose of romance. Napa Valley Balloons, Inc. says their most popular package includes morning refreshments, a 45-minute to one-hour ride, and a sparkling wine toast. NapaValleyBalloons.com Strip down to your skivvies and take a dip in one of Napa’s exclusive hot springs. Natural mineral hot springs are aplenty in Napa, but how will you know which one to choose? The big spas in the area garner the most attention, with large pools and tubs open to full days of relaxation like Calistoga Hot Springs, Golden Haven Hot Springs Spa, Indian Springs Calistoga, and Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort. In addition to public spots, Roman Spa also has private mineral baths curated for couples, offering another level of romance. Even if you don’t stay at Calistoga Spa,

Taste the Love

While there is plenty to do in Napa, you know you came (at least in part) for the wine. But with more than 400 wineries in the Valley, it’s hard to know which ones to visit, at least on one trip. After you’ve toured and tasted at the castle, hit up some of the area’s other romantic stops. At Stags’ Leap Winery, history is part of the charm. The castle-like estate dates back to 1890 and has a long list of famous visitors including the Queen of Portugal. Stop by to sip the infamous cabernet sauvignon before stealing a kiss on the Juliet balcony fit for a princess. The Victorian manor sits at the end of a long, private road, secluding it from some of the busier stretches in town. Stop in for an estate tour and tasting, a 90-minute experience that concludes with a seated

tasting in the Manor House. Tours are offered daily at 10 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM. 6150 Silverado Trail, Napa Twenty minutes north of Napa, within the Napa Valley, the magic of Peju Napa Valley exists both in the bottle and the gardens. The sprawling 60-acre estate has been in the Peju family for 30 years, and over that time they have continued to add to its beauty. Stroll hand in hand through the gardens to explore its bounty of flowers and statues created by Welton Rotz and Philip Dizick. On the garden tour you will see the man-made koi pond, footbridge, and other serene elements. When you’re done exploring,

FRIENDLY NOODLES

YUJIN RAMEN & NOODLE BAR  BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D

DAN HOOD

Located nearby University of the Pacific, Yujin Ramen & Noodle Bar owner Harry Yu picked the perfect location for his noodle shop—one of three restaurants he owns in San Joaquin County including Mikasa Sushi and New Midori in Tracy. On Pacific Avenue, Yujin Ramen caters to both students and professionals. Food is good but inexpensive, plus it offers a fresh, high-end alternative to the cup of noodles many college students live off of. And with students coming from Los Angeles and San Francisco to study at UOP, Yujin Ramen provides a staple they are familiar with in a place where ramen places aren’t as easy to find. SJMAG.COM

local dish

While the food is what keeps people coming back, there is another reason Harry says his restaurant enjoys so many repeat customers. In addition to the ability to grab a quite bite or sit at the bar and socialize—the space is small, but cozy, with 66 seats total—Harry is focused on quality service. In fact, in Japanese, Yujin translates to very friendly, so, Yujin Ramen & Noodle Bar roughly means very friendly noodle shop. Ramen, according to Harry, is different from other Japanese and Chinese fare. For one, it’s healthier. Opened in April 2018, the noodle shop is accessible, with a low price point (bowls of ramen cost just $9-11), and ramen is made fresh to order with ingredients imported from Japan, not made from a pre-prepared paste like some other shops. “When you eat fresh ramen, it’s totally different,” Harry says. Harry and his team have making ramen down to a science. Every single noodle is cooked individually in a drop basket for exactly two minutes. Any more or less and the noodles will be under- or over-cooked. The broth, however, is made ahead of time.

To create the broth, the chefs at Yujin Ramen boil and simmer chicken or pork bones and other ingredients for up to 10 hours, allowing for the subtle flavors to come through. Once the noodles have been rinsed and added to the broth, it’s time for the toppings. Each ramen dish has its own finishes, and loyal customers have a tendency to customize their bowls by adding extra toppings. Popular choices include corn, eggs, and chashu (a braised pork in a soy sauce base). “They don’t leave a single drop,” Harry says. “We’re happy to hear so many good comments.” One of the most popular choices on the menu is the tongue casserole, a very creamy soup made with BBQ pork ramen. There are also more traditional meals such as miso ramen and vegetarian ramen. The Chuka Soba is another favorite, ramen made with pork or chicken and topped with a soft-boiled flavored egg, a narutomaki fish cake, the white part of a green onion, menma (a condiment made from bamboo shoots), and nori (edible red algae seaweed). The spicy miso ramen is the most expensive

ramen on the menu. For $11, guests can dive into a bowl of spicy ground pork with bean sprouts and green onion. While many stop into Yujin for a quick meal between classes or on their lunch break from work, the sit-down restaurant does also cater to a more leisurely meal. Sure, it’s possible to be in and out of the noodle shop in 30 minutes or less, but for those looking for a multi-course meal or a chill place to veg out and watch the game, Yujin does that too. Also on the menu is a collection of Japanese-style curry rice at the same price point, either made with your choice of meat, or vegetarian style with broccoli, cabbage, corn, and carrot. Don’t forget to start your meal with one of Yujin’s tempting appetizers. Order up a gyoza (chicken dumpling, $5), spicy edamame ($5), or gesso kara (fried squid, $6). And, always end with dessert. The eatery has three daily options: baked cheesecake ($3), amano strawberry shortcake ($4), and green tea monblanc cake ($5). COME EAT: 3202 PACIFIC AVE., STOCKTON (209) 395-0188 YujinRamen.com

THERE’S A NEW DUO IN TOWNE CHEF IAN BENS JOINS CHEF BRADLEY OGDEN AT

TOWNE HOUSE RESTAURANT  BY

SUZANNE LEDBETTER

Lodi wine country’s culinary scene just experienced a shake up of epic proportions. Chef Ian Bens, former executive chef at Rosewood Bar and Grill, was recently announced the new chef at Towne House Restaurant at Wine and Roses. He joins the ranks of James Beard Award-winning Chef Bradley Ogden, who serves as Culinary Director at Wine and Roses. This is what we call winning, folks. Two incredible chefs, one location, and the result—a dynamic culinary duo! So, what can local food enthusiasts expect from the newest addition to the culinary team at Towne House Restaurant? A lot. One talented chef in a kitchen is a good thing. Two talented chefs bouncing culinary trends off each other is a recipe for success. If we could predict one thing, it’s that the menu will be in a constant state of evolution—changing with the seasons and with every bright new idea conceptualized by the dynamic duo. Chef Ogden has been wowing fans of fine dining for decades, and there is no question he still has the passion for his craft, whether its prepping an entire octopus to be grilled for a wine dinner or showcasing local products in new and inventive ways. A native of Canada and classically trained chef with stints at some of the finest restaurants in North America (Banff Springs and the Fairmont George Washington in D.C.), Bens brings a lot to the table. He is a master of fermentation, a beekeeper, forager of nature, and supporter of sustainability in food. He’s also a creative mad scientist, who will undoubtedly shake up the menu at Towne House. Both chefs have cultivated relationships with local farmers and ranchers. Both chefs believe in hyperlocal sourcing of the food on their menu. Both believe in letting the quality of the product they are working with speak for itself. The result—amped up, flavorful dishes featuring the freshest produce around. The partnership of Bens and Ogden is sure to serve the interests of local foodies well and bring both tourists and critics to the table at

MASTERING the MARGARITA

JUST IN TIME TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL MARGARITA DAY  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER

In San Joaquin county we love getting festive with our cocktails, but it’s hard to find seasonal sippers that outlast the staples we’re used to. Margaritas are one of those drinks many of us can’t help but go back to, with a clean, crisp taste and a million flavor combinations. Celebrate National Margarita Day on February 22 and master the margarita! We’ve got all the tips on what works, what doesn’t, and where you can sample the best margaritas in the 209. VARIATIONS GOOD BAD QUIRKY WTF

WTF GO BLUE. Change out the triple sec for curacao.

GOOD KEEP IT CLASSIC A classic margarita uses only three simple ingredients. Also referred to as the Trilogy: tequila, lime juice, and triple sec.

HABANERO HOTS makes a classic margarita worth sipping. Crafted with the exclusive Tesoro tequila and agave nectar instead of a simple syrup. WTF ORANGE YOU THIRSTY Add carrot juice for a springtime margarita with health benefits.

GOOD SPICE IT UP Muddle up some freshly sliced jalapenos in a simple syrup instead of the triple sec for a kicked-up concoction that pairs perfectly with street tacos.

WEST OAK NOSH is where you go for a Cadillac margarita in Lodi. The addition of Grand Marnier is what makes this libation next level.

At MIDGLEY’S PUBLIC HOUSE, a Lincoln Center staple, you can turn up the heat with a habanero-infused tequila in your margarita.

GOOD SWEET SPOT Add fresh berries, mangoes, or watermelon for a seasonal summertime sipper.

CLASSIC MARGARITA FEBRUARY 2020

WTF SWITCH IT UP Swap out the triple sec for Grand Marnier, Cointreau, or Combier to boost the citrus profile in your margarita.

GOOD BLENDED OR ON THE ROCKS There are two basic preparations for a margarita. Blended or on the rocks. How you like it is up to you, just remember any attempt to cut corners will stand out.

BAD GOING GENERIC Using a store bought sweet and sour mix to save time.

92

GOOD TO SALT OR NOT TO SALT If you are a fan of salt, be sure to rub a fresh lime around the rim of your glass before dipping the glass in salt. You can even use lime sea salt or a mixture of salt and Tajin for more flavor.

classic margarita is usually made using Blanco, also casually known as silver tequila. BAD Using a $130 bottle of Don Julio 1942 Tequila for your drink. EL PACZIFICO makes a mean strawberry mint margarita that is fresh, flavorful, and balanced.

RULES TO LIVE BY • Never use a tequila you wouldn’t sip on its own. Or better yet, buy the best tequila you can afford. • Juice your own limes. Fresh is best! • Know your ratios. There is nothing worse than a cocktail that is too sweet or too strong. • Drink in moderation

If you haven’t had a Nashville hot chicken sandwich, you are missing out on one of the hottest food trends in America. Well guess what? Stockton just became home to the first restaurant focusing on this divine dish. Located on El Dorado Street in downtown Stockton, Nash + Tender is slanging the heat every Monday through Saturday to local foodies. Choose from the traditional hot chicken sandwich, chicken and waffles, or even the hot chicken loaded fries. Check it out now. You can thank us later.

DESSERT WINE FOR LOVERS With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, you might want to stock up on dessert wine to uncork with that special someone! Harney Lane Winery’s Lizzy James Port NV is one of our favorites. For $35, you can sip on this juice while devouring a warm chocolate molten lava cake. Or grab a bottle of Macchia’s Dangerous 2017 Port ($26), to sip fireside with a platter of chocolate-covered strawberries. If sweets aren’t your thing, consider a cheese platter for dessert and pair it with Peltier’s USB Red NV ($25). The smoky notes are perfect for a wedge of blue cheese with fig jam.

DATE NIGHT COCKTAIL If you are looking for a spot to enjoy a cocktail with the one you love, chances are you might end up at Rosewood Bar and Grill. If you are feeling festive and looking to stay awake past dinner time, opt for the espresso martini. A smooth and flavorful after dinner drink made with vanilla vodka, Frangelico, Kahlua, and espresso. It’s easy to see what the buzz is all about.

CANNED SIPPERS

SAN JOAQUIN BUSINESSES ARE TURNING TO CANS TO INCREASE SALES  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Canned wine has climbed to the number one spot when it comes to industry trends, but it isn’t the only beverage getting a new look—and a new vessel to make it from the facility to your mouth. Local businesses are investing in canned products to carry their wine, cider, and beer to customers. The packaging is more versatile, has fewer limitations, and, in many cases, is a positive for taste.

WILLIAM TELL BONE DRY APPLE CIDER Scotto's Wine & Cider This straight- forward cider is simple and dry, made with apples, apples, and more apples to keep the integrity of a traditional apple cider drink, not muddled with other flavors or additions. Sip this versatile showstopper with just about anything. ABV: 6%

FREAKSHOW CABERNET SAUVIGNON Michael David Winery This deep red blend shows off its oaky flavors and dark, black fruits without losing any of its bold flavors in the can. Moderate tannins make it an easy-to-drink red blend, yet still one of the boldest canned wines on the local menu with hints of wood smoke, baking spices, and maple in each sip. ABV: 14.5%

2017 ROSE OF PINOT NOIR Dancing Coyote Wines When it comes to wine drinking, this light-bodied rosé varietal made from pinot noir grapes offers fans a crisp, floral wine punctuated by notes of sweet fruits like strawberry and watermelon. Unlike many rosés, this one is not sweet, but the dry quality of the wine brings out the fresh flavors and is balanced by a crisp acidity. ABV: 13.5%

VISIT ON VALENTINE’S DAY

TASTE IN PLYMOUTH FOOD, SIPS AND FUN  BY NORA HESTON TARTE About 45 minutes from Lodi sits Plymouth, a small town coming into its own as another Northern California wine destination. Tucked into the Sierra Foothills, the burgeoning city was first settled during the Gold Rush when a local mine attracted swarms of people. But a fire in 1877 demolished 20 buildings and spelled the demise for much of Plymouth. As of 2010, the city was home to just over 1,000 people, but for many its small population only adds to its historic charm. Downtown, quaint tasting rooms pop up next to abandoned buildings, and guests can experience the revitalization happening from year to year as Plymouth (once known as Pokerville) earns its place in Amador County. Up the hill, wineries abound—many on Shenandoah Road—turning out hundreds of varietals from old-vine zinfandel to petite sirah, many made completely out of grapes from the Shenandoah Valley AVA. In total, there are 21 wineries in Plymouth. Stop by prominent favorites like Turley Cellars (which boasts 47 types of wine), Iron Hub Winery (run by the

founding winemaker of Lava Cap Winery), Terra d’Oro Winery (known for its ancient vines and Italian varietals), and Helwig Vineyards & Winery (with its own wine cave and 60 acres of vineyards). While the wine is the valley’s biggest draw, there are other to do’s to put on your list. The Amador Flower Farm, for example, came to fame because of its impressive selection of daylilies with more than 1,200 on property and an option to take some home as a souvenir. It’s the perfect place to bring a picnic lunch—ideally picked up from Amador Vintage Market—and enjoy the peaceful grounds, flush with demonstration gardens. Sidle up to a table and revel in the surrounding nature, including 300-yearold heritage oak trees that

GOING BEYOND BREAKFAST with GRAPEFRUIT  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER, FINE FOODIE PHILANTHROPIST

The good ol’ grapefruit is one of those polarizing foods people either love or hate. For many, it’s because the only way they’ve ever eaten a grapefruit is as a breakfast staple with a healthy dose of sugar sprinkled on top. But we’ve got great news—the grapefruit is making a comeback.

The juicy, tart flesh of this late winter fruit is perfect for a variety of cuisines. The bright acidity makes it the perfect pairing for a firm, white fish. It also adds an ideal zing to a savory salad, cocktail, or even a decadent dessert. So, throw out your long-held reservations against the grapefruit and grab a handful the next time you hit up the grocery store. You won’t be disappointed!

Grapefruit & Fennel Salad INGREDIENTS 2 c. spinach 2 grapefruits 2 Cara Cara oranges 1 fennel bulb with fronds ¼ c. pomegranates 2 tbsp. Calivirgin Blood Orange Olive Oil Salt and pepper to taste.

DIRECTIONS Slice grapefruit and oranges into 1/3-inch pieces. Remove the peel and pith from the outside using a paring knife. Meanwhile, cut the fennel bulb into thin slices. Also chop fennel frond and set aside. Layer a medium sized platter with spinach, slices of citrus, fennel bulb slices, and pomegranates. Garnish with fennel fronds and drizzle with blood orange olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

KEEP YOUR WEIGHT IN CHECK Grapefruit is low in calories but rich in nutrients making it a nutritious snack that fights off cravings. It’s also low on the glycemic index, which means it does not have a significant impact on blood sugar levels. This makes it a perfect fruit for diabetics and those with metabolic syndrome. RICH IN ANTIOXIDANTS Grapefruit is also a great source of antioxidants—you know, those powerful little nutrients that fight off free radicals and keep cancer at bay. They are also rich in lycopene, another form of antioxidants that are an essential part of a healthy diet.

Spring Forward Cocktail INGREDIENTS For the Simple Syrup 1 c. sugar 1 c. water 8 sprigs of thyme

For the Cocktail 1 ½ oz. vodka ½ oz. thyme infused simple syrup ½ oz. fresh ruby-red grapefruit juice ½ oz. fresh lemon juice Thyme sprigs for garnish DIRECTIONS For the simple syrup, combine the water and sugar in a small saucepan. Add thyme sprigs and turn up heat to medium. Once the syrup is dissolved and the liquid begins to simmer, remove from heat and set aside. In a cocktail shaker, combine vodka, simple syrup, grapefruit juice, and lemon juice. Add ice and shake. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass and garnish with thyme.

KEEP COLDS AND FLU AT BAY We all know citrus is packed with vitamin C and grapefruit is no exception. Vitamin C helps to support our immune system in several ways and can even help to prevent or treat respiratory infections.

Cheesecake with Grapefruit Curd INGREDIENTS 1 cheesecake, store bought or home-made 2 grapefruits, sliced with peel and pith removed for garnish 8 large egg yolks 2/3 c. sugar Grated zest of one grapefruit ½ c. strained grapefruit juice 10 tbsp. unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

DIRECTIONS Whisk eggs, sugar, and zest in a medium stainless steel or enamel saucepan. Add grapefruit juice and butter to mixture. Cook over medium heat, whisking until the butter is melted. Continue to whisk until the mixture is thick and simmers gently for a few seconds. Using a spatula, scrape the filling into a medium sieve set over a bowl and strain the filling into the bowl. Let cool and refrigerate to thicken, Spread over the top of your cheesecake and garnish with slices of grapefruit. Serve immediately.

HOW TO PICK A GRAPEFRUIT Look for a firm fruit that feels heavy and dense. You want to be sure the skin is glossy and the fruit feels plump to the touch. They can be stored at room temperature, away from sunlight, for up to a week or in your produce drawer of the refrigerator for up to three weeks.

THIS DISH IS EGG-CELLENT  BY FAITH LEWIS

Fusion foods are trending, from picture-perfect plates of Korean tacos to Tandoori Barbecue Chicken Pizza. But at The Kitchen @ Stonebrier, they’re mixing up something a little different. There you can

indulge in Jalapeño Popper Deviled Eggs, a playful reimagining of two familiar American comfort foods that brings the best of savory, salty, and spicy flavors to the table. A departure from the traditional deviled egg recipe that relies on mustard, mayonnaise, and boiled egg yolks to achieve that satin-smooth texture, these Jalapeño Popper Deviled

Eggs benefit from the added creaminess of cream cheese and the contrasting crunch of jalapeño. Topped with crumbled bacon and microcilantro, the salty, spicy, and fresh elements strike a harmonious balance that is sure to have you reaching for seconds. Sitting atop a bed of arugula, the deviled egg filling is swirled and stacked high with bacon. This dish not only manages to strike an impressive balance of flavors, but of colors and textures as well. Try not to Instagram it. We dare you.
