HOME & GARDEN
There’s something about a houseplant that truly draws a room together. Wheth-
er it’s a centerpiece on the dining room table, adding life to the corner of a room, or soaking up sunshine next to your bookcase—plants really do transform a house into a home. Some might even clean your air while doing so! We did the research and found our favorites among hundreds of unusual, and beautiful botanicals. Find your perfect fit in the following!
BOSTON FERN NON-TOXIC TO DOGS & CATS
Take care of this temperamental beauty, and it will take care of you. Boston Ferns remove plenty of indoor air pollutants from your breathing space, such as benzene, xylene, and formaldehyde. They prefer a more humid climate and indirect light, so if your house leans towards the drier side, make sure to water frequently each week, and lightly mist the fern’s leaves with water. If your fern’s leaves are turning yellow, the humidity is too low. Fertilize only a few times each year.
ALOE VERA
TOXIC TO DOGS & CATS
A most forgiving plant when it comes to watering, Aloe Vera enjoy wider pots and well-drained soil to prevent root rot. They prefer indirect sunlight, and do well in artificial. When watering, soak the plant completely through, but allow it to dry a minimum of 2 inches deep to keep it healthy between watering. The best part? Aloe Vera’s gorgeous leaves can be used to alleviate pain from sun burns and scrapes! Now that’s a plant that likes to give back.
PRAYER PLANT NON-TOXIC TO DOGS & CATS
SPIDER PLANT NON-TOXIC TO DOGS & CATS
One of the heartiest plants you’ll own and aptly named for the smaller versions of itself dangling off the main plant! Spider plants enjoy well-drained soil and a good soaking, but need to dry out a bit between watering. They thrive in indirect sunlight, and their tiny flowering tendrils eventually turn into baby spider plants, that can eventually be cut and used to produce more plants. Re-pot them only when they’ve outgrown their container, which is indicated by the large roots poking out from the soil.
RUBBER PLANTS
NON-TOXIC TO DOGS & CATS
When purchased young, these gorgeous plants can be tailored to suit your household. They grow well in indirect or direct sunlight, and their size largely depends upon the pot you use to keep them. The smaller the pot, and the less sunlight they receive, the slower and smaller they’ll grow. Pop this lovely out and into the sunshine for short periods of time in a large pot for some serious growth spurts. Like the Boston Fern, the Rubber Plant is perfect for removing formaldehyde from the air. Keep the soil moist and wipe down the leaves with water from time to time, and you’re good to go!

|
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE AT HOME 2017
Another high-humidity lover, the Prayer Plant loves bright, indirect light and well-drained soil. Keep its planter moist and mist the leaves with warm water. Fertilize and add warm water to its soil every two weeks. It will need to be re-potted in early spring, but your efforts will be rewarded with cuttings that can be used to create new, little plants.
PEACE LILY TOXIC TO DOGS & CATS
This plant is perfect for novices. Not only does it bloom indoors, it will also remove harsh air pollutants such as benzene, and provides a little more humidity to the air all on its own. The Peace Lily prefers moist soil, and will need to be re-potted annually. Keep an eye out for brown leaf tips, which are an indicator of too much light. Fertilize around six to seven weeks in winter.
BAMBOO
NON-TOXIC TO DOGS & CATS
Who couldn’t use a little more luck every now and then? Bamboo is great for those who like a good-looking plant, with little hassle. They prefer to sit on your desk in bright, indirect sunlight,
and can be left to its own devices in nothing, but a pot of pebbles and water. Word of caution, though! Bamboo doesn’t like chlorine found in our tap water. Use bottled or distilled to keep this beauty strong. Fertilize very sparingly, and every other month at most.
ORCHID
MILD IRRITATION TO DOGS & CATS
One of the fussiest and most delicate plants you’ll ever have, Orchids are hard to keep alive, and even harder to bloom. But when they do, they are a sight to behold. Strong, and indirect sunlight is a must, along with high humidity. Orchids require a soaking in their shallow pot, and need to dry out a bit between watering. Mist your orchid with warm water daily, and fertilize weekly while young. Once mature, fertilize every other month. Do not fertilize during dormancy season. Re-pot your Orchid every other year.

If your paint is in good shape, consider creating a colored accent wall or adding subtle stripes or a chevron pattern to a room. With the right colors, you can completely makeover the space; and paint is considerably less expensive than a complete renovation.

. When you want to preserve the look of your home. Paint provides a layer of protection for your walls and other surfaces. It can prevent surface deterioration, protect against rough weather, and keep moisture out, which is important for the prevention of mold and fungal growth. Some paint types provide more protection than others, so always consult with a professional before you purchase. Painting the interior of your home also reduces the appearance of dust, stains, and fingerprints.

HAVE HAMMOCK, WILL HANG BY COPPER WILLIAMS
It’s an understatement to say that we love sunshine here in San Joaquin. Paired with that whimsical Delta breeze, just the right amount of sunscreen, and a good book, we can easily whittle away our summer days outside. Oh, yeah. We know you’re grinning from ear to ear, but there’s just one tip we have that can bring this relaxing retreat full circle in all the right ways. A hammock. Hammocks are back in style, as if they never left—littering garden departments, commercial conglomerates, and even camping stores. But when you really, really think about it, is it all that surpris-

ing? Just imagine, for a moment—you’re heading out to the back patio, your favorite music playlist primed on your phone, and tucked in the corner of your yard, between two big, beautiful trees, is a sling of fabric just waiting for you. And so you do. Feet kicked up, the perfect view of those lazy white clouds swimming by overhead. You hit “play” on your phone, and voila! Instant and very welcomed retreat from your all worries and your strife. Now that you’re itching to get your sway on, it’s time to learn a thing or two about the many varieties available. Didn’t realize they came in an assortment of threads, did you? The first that often springs to mind is the classic rope

hammock. These are typically used with a spreader bar, which evens out the hammock’s rope without hassle, but also makes the hammock more prone to tipping over. Ones made out of cotton are the most comfortable, though polyester ropes are far more durable and less prone to mildew. The quilted hammock is another style you’ve probably seen before. Also available with spreader bars, this hammock is comprised of a fabric, often with filling of some sort for cushioning, that you lay across, with ropes that attach to the fabric and then to the spreader bars. Similarly, the Brazilian hammock is made entirely from cotton fibers and is very thick. These are not typically used with a spreader bar, and has a cocooning effect when you lay in them. The Nicaraguan hammock is very similar to the Brazilian, but the weave is much tighter and doubled. Our personal favorite, however, is the Mayan hammock. Designed in bright, beautiful colors, it’s comprised of thin string which makes for a very flexible hammock. They’re also very light, and
BOTTOMS UP!
Never, ever try to climb into a hammock feet first! Remember, these babies were made to sway, and will be doing just that as you crawl on in. Instead, whatever type the hammock, make sure to spread it open wide with your hands and carefully slip in backwards, bum first. Then adjust yourself according to your own personal taste.

can hold a very large amount of weight. Perfect for the whole family to gather onto for that annual photo! Poolside hammocks are very durable and mildew resistant—for good reason! It’s less likely to fall prey to the sun’s baking rays and lose color, and perfect for drying off after a swim. This type typically comes with a spreader bar, so you can get your tan without being cocooned. And last—but not least—is the camping hammock!
Weighing on the lighter side, it’s perfect for backpackers who want to get off the ground after a day’s trek. They’re extremely durable and made to be hung between two trees, so you can sleep and be on your merry way. Better still, some even come with bug nets, so you won’t be pestered by flying blood suckers. But personally? We love this for backyard sleepovers with the kids! Select the type of hammock that suits your lifestyle and spend your days resting easy!

PRESERVING YOUR HAMMOCK
Remember to maintain your hammock by following the instructions provided. Some hammocks require minimal work, while others will need to be waxed, wiped down, or washed from time to time. And keep in mind, as with many materials, direct sunlight exposure to your hammock over time will break it down.
TOO HOT TO HANG
Keep the climate in mind when selecting your hammock. Some breathe easier than others, while a few were meant to keep the wind at bay.

STYLE YOUR HOME’S EYES
BY JENNIFER MOULAISON
If eyes are a window into the soul, and windows are a home’s eyes—and choosing what covers this vital part of the home is a decision of more consequence than one might assume. Add in trends, technology, and overall interior design aesthetics and the process might seem downright inundating. Fortunately, with over twenty years experience providing everything from complementary in-home consultations to meticulous installation to maintenance and repair, Elite Shutters and Shadings lends established knowledge and expertise to assist every aspect of the process. Whether seeking something classic or searching for up-to-the-minute trends— clean, classic aesthetic, low maintenance, durability, and light control make for tried and true covering options. What about something a little more cutting edge? Automation and integration, according to Elite, is the latest and greatest trend in coverings, and Hunter Douglas has become an industry leader with their Powerview Smart Motor Systems. This kind of automation controls window coverings to open and close throughout the day and makes an impressive impact on energy efficiency. Powered by a

Looking to reduce monthly expenses at home or at the office? Installing solar panels is a great way to cut energy costs fast. Solar panels reduce energy use, which in turn lowers monthly energy bills. Some large installations even lead to a $0 monthly bill—a huge difference from the standard 16–40 cents per kilowatt hour charged by California energy companies—a surefire way to recoup upfront equipment and installation costs fast. And there’s no better time than now to switch to solar because the price of solar is at a record low. “The return on your investment for solar is the best it’s ever been,” says Rich Remington, owner of BTA Solar in Stockton. Solar is even better for the environment than it is for your wallet. The federal government is willing to pay people to make the switch. Take advantage of a federal energy tax credit and receive a lump sum on your annual return. When utilizing all available tax incentives, these systems can pay for themselves in as little as 3-4 years. ASK ABOUT SOLAR TODAY: BTA SOLAR 800 N. Shaw Rd., Stockton (209) 483-2991, BTASolar.com

GRAYSCALE
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
With 2017 came the coloring trend of gray scale. Interior designers have experienced an uptick in requests for gray furniture, flooring, window treatments, paint, and more as home owners race to redo their living spaces. Gray is permeating the market on every finish—from wood floors to leather couches. While gray has always been a popular neutral in home design, the trend of finishing an entire room, or whole home, in gray tones is new. Flooring has traditionally been brown, but Emmie Jimenez, President at Home Styles Furniture in Stockton, says customers are now asking for distressed wood finishes in washed-out gray tones. “We did bring in a lot of gray. You’ll find it a lot throughout the store because people were asking for it,” Emmie says. However, customers don’t stop at the floors. Emmie adds, “They’ll try to use a darker shade or a lighter shade on the wall and contrast it with other shades throughout the room.” The result is a monochrome space complete with gray walls, gray floors, gray window treatments, and gray furniture in a variety of shades.
To make a space feel more luxurious, designers have also started adding touches of metallic silver to the gray tones. The trend is especially popular on furniture—think bedroom sets and dining room tables painted metallic. The key to pulling off a grayscale room is the variation of tones. If everything in a room is the same shade of gray, it looks washed-out, and not in a trendy way. Mix and match dark slate colors with light dove grays and add touches of silver. It’s also important to play with texture when working with one color across an entire room. Add shiplap to a wall or alternate two-tones of gray with painted stripes, one in matte and one shiny. Then, mix in different fabrics with embroidered curtains and metal finishes or painted canvases and leather pillows, anyway to break up monotony. Some designers are elevating the trend by placing a single pop of color in a grayscale room—think a bright red couch, purple throw pillows, or a colorful tapestry for the wall to act as a focal point. required a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio rating, SEER for short, of just 7-10. Today, California residents have to purchase machines with a minimum SEER ratio of 14 (federal law says 13). A brand new system costs a little extra, but if your HVAC is outdated, you’re paying more each month anyway. And a simple upgrade of your home or office HVAC could qualify you for an energy-saving tax credit of up to $500 come next April. The same rebate applies to the other systems in your home. LED light bulbs use less energy to run and energy-efficient dishwashers use less water. When you use less, you’re charged less. Energy upgrade California (EnergyUpgradeCA.org) offers a lot of information about reducing monthly costs while making smart choices regarding energy, often benefiting the planet as much as your own wallet. Visit PGE.com/EnergySavings to see additional saving measures. Or try Energy.gov. Bottom line, when you’re looking to reduce monthly costs in your home or office, contact an expert who can help. This includes changing out systems in your home in a way that saves money instead of spends it. Want to save money on monthly energy costs in your home or office? Switching outdated systems for new technology is a great place to start. With energy-efficient LED lighting, new HVAC systems, and tank-less water heaters, it’s easy to lower electricity, water, and gas bills with a few quick equipment upgrades. Sometimes these systems cost a little extra upfront, but the pay off comes quick. Not to mention, federal tax breaks help customers recoup some of their costs. Contractors at Lovotti Inc. in Stockton provide and install the highest quality energy and water efficient products on the market at a reasonable price. These systems work more efficiently, leading to lower monthly costs across the board, plus they are better for the environment. Upgrading appliances—from washing machines to heating and air conditioning—works not only because newer models are designed with efficiency in mind, but because they work smarter than old, tired equipment that is nearing the end of its life. STOCK YOUR HOME WITH QUALITY PIECES Sure, it’s hard to pass up a serious furniture sale, but investing in a piece that will be deemed dump-worthy in just a few years is a complete waste of time—and money. “People are drawn in by the sales and low prices of other stores but they don’t realize that by paying a little more, they can get so much more quality that will last,” Curt Daniger of Daniger Furniture says. And you really should look at furnishing your house as a true investment—just like an auto purchase. Do you save a few bucks and then pay to replace your radiator a few months down the road, or do you rest assured that your car will keep kicking with normal maintenance for the next ten years? At Daniger, the family sees purchasing furniture as a long-term investment, which is why they offer in-home consultations to help families get just the right pieces to complete their home— and specialize in American-made quality furniture from manufactures that take pride in their craftsmanship and stand behind their products. An on-staff interior designer helps bring customers’ visions to life whether they are sprucing up their abode or overhauling the whole house. From recliners to dining room tables, high-quali-

ty mattresses to upholstery repair and services, it’s a one-stop shop for whole home furnishings. “Everyone enjoys a comfortable home that works for their lifestyle [and] we bring three generations of knowledge to help them in what can be a pleasant experience,” Curt says. One word sums up how Curt and Susan Daniger feel about their business: proud. As the oldest family operated furniture store in San Joaquin County, Daniger Furniture has already proved its business model, and when Curt and Susan took over in 2003 as the third generation, they promised to maintain the quality product and over-thetop customer service that helped their grandparents find success when they opened the store in 1939.
So, proud just about sums it up; Curt and Susan are proud to own a family business in Lodi, proud to carry on the family legacy at Daniger Furniture, proud to offer quality furniture at a fair price, and proud to specialize in products that are American-made. Take advantage of Daniger’s three generations of expertise as well as the plethora of services they offer to make the furniture buying process as seamless as possible, including free delivery, free pick up of old furniture, financing options, interior design expertise, and in-home consultations.

FOR THE LOVE OF
PAINTING If you’ve ever visited the Bob Hope Theatre in Stockton, you’ve seen the work of Kelso’s Painting, Inc., a Stockton-based business that specializes in both residential and commercial painting projects.
Kevin Kelso in 1986
“We were able to work along side of one of the nation’s best decorative painting companies,” owner Kevin Kelso says of transforming the old Fox Theatre into Bob Hope Theatre. “When the project was completed we were very proud of what we had accomplished.” Kelso’s Painting took off in 1988 after Kevin, who worked with Grupe Management Co. from 7984, received his business license (while still working for Grupe in 1984, Kevin started taking residential housing on the side). Through word of mouth, he was keeping busy, and decided it was time to

take his business to the next level. In 2004, Kelso’s Painting, Inc. was born, and Kevin’s one-man show became a 12-man team. “I did not look back and charged full speed ahead, obtaining my contractor's license in 1988, and branching into commercial and public works projects. This has kept us diversified and able to withstand the ups and downs of the painting industry for more than three decades,” Kevin says. Kelso’s Painting has since taken on several high profile projects, such as animal shelters, shopping centers, historic buildings, and many elementary school and college renovations, but they haven’t stopped doing the residential paint jobs that gave Kevin his start many years ago—from 1,000 sq. ft homes to 12,000 sq. ft. residences. “We get the most satisfaction working directly with the home owner, making sure they receive exactly what they asked for,” he says. Kelso’s Painting has now settled into a comfortable five-man team. As Kevin gears up for retirement after more than 33 years of running Kelso’s Painting, he wants residents to know that the company isn’t going anywhere. He may start spending more time relaxing with his wife, Linda, but his children—Brenton and Elizabeth—are prepared to take over the family business, demonstrating the same ambition with which it was opened.

WATERPROOF YOUR
FLOORS! Floors get dirty; kids spill juice boxes and dinner guests drip red wine. I’m sure a wet dog has slid across your floor at least once. So how do you protect flooring from the normal wears and tears of everyday life? Plan ahead. When it comes to your floors, waterproof translates to worry-proof! Luxury Vinyl Plank floors have a reputation for durability, so by choosing waterproof planks, you’re adding even more value to the long-lasting flooring option. With wood, concrete, and stone looks available, they never go out of fashion, and Better Flooring Outlet in Stockton carries an assortment of colors in all three styles, so you aren’t limited when selecting waterproof floors. Waterproof planks are a good option for every room. Before customers would shy away from placing luxury flooring in bathrooms and kitchens, rooms where water damage could easily warp and damage other floors, and instead opt for stone or vinyl. With waterproof LVP floors from the nation’s leading companies—Armstrong, Shaw, Mohawk, and Cortec—Better Flooring Outlet
(formerly known as Big Bob’s Flooring) is a one-stop shop for whole home flooring needs. In fact, many customers are using the planks on outdoor spaces such as decks, creating the possibility to have an entire home finished with LVP floors, creating cohesion and class without the worry of damage in the future. The biggest mistake shoppers make is thinking they can save a little cash by going for water-resistant flooring instead of waterproof. The difference, however, is this: water resistant flooring withstands water better than traditional flooring and carpet (which isn’t water resistant at all), waterproof flooring could become submerged under water for days and still clean up to look brand new. There is no wiggle room with waterproof; waterproof means water will not damage or compromise the construction or look of the LVP or the subfloor underneath. Another misconception? That a water resistant sealant will give the same results. Wood-looking LVP is very popular, however, if you’re interested in waterproof floors but don’t love the look of wood, stone and concrete finishes are great alternatives.

A FAMILY
CRAFT BY NORA HESTON TARTE
For years, Fred Alverson watched his dad, Andrew Alverson, run a furniture business in Stockton. At 15 years old, he started helping out after his dad told him “there are no free rides in life.” And even though after high school Fred went to college and then joined the Air Force, he never stopped upholstering; in 2001 he became a certified master upholster, a high honor that required proof of over 10,000 hours of work and several mastery skills covering all phases of upholstery. He also moved his father’s shop, opened 55 years ago, to downtown Stockton. “Because of that certification I have done work for designers as far south as San Diego and as far north as Reno,” Fred says of his clientele. At Alverson's Fabric & Furniture, upholstery is Fred’s primary business. However, he also sells new furniture and high-end, quality used furniture as well as builds cornice boxes, headboards, and, sometimes, custom furniture. “A custom piece is really an investment piece,” Fred explains. So he doesn’t get a ton of clients walking in with requests. He does recall www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
one project in particular, though, where a gentleman in his 60s ordered a threepiece set to resemble furniture he grew up with as an adolescent. “It was probably one of the priciest projects that I’d done,” Fred recalls. The set included a long couch, loveseat, and 48 inch ottoman. “The couch was like 105 inches long but it had a depth of 56 inches.” The man provided a sketch and dimensions but Fred had to recreate the feel of the furniture, to grant the man the nostalgia he was in search of. In the end, it was a success. Not only was the client, who visited Fred every step of the way to ensure the finished product would meet his needs, thrilled, Fred entered the furniture into an international design competition and took home gold. “It was very unique,” he says. Fred continues to take on large projects, including a recent furniture gig with Ford & Associates, helping create furniture for a home in Acampo. Mostly, however, he sticks to reupholstery. “I have over 40,000 patterns to select from.”

CUSTOM DESIGN A HOME FOR KIDS, PETS, AND GROWING OLD TOGETHER. BY LINDSEY RODRIAN I’m sure everyone has, at some point, mentally dissected their home—knock out that wall, install more shelving, swap out the colored tile countertop. Floorplans of the past are sometimes a head scratcher—a four-bedroom house with a cramped kitchen, literally zero storage, or one ridiculously small, almost unusable third bedroom.

THE MODEL
HOME
The home you fall in love with might have a few bells and whistles not included on your final model choice. For those on a tight budget, make sure to ask questions as you peruse different builder options, and make sure that you’re in love with the overall floorplan and structure of the home, not the additions that may catapult you far over your budget.
BUILDING for KIDS
Kids take up a lot of space, and they have a lot of stuff. Custom options like a loft addition, recessed shelving, and space-savvy storage can work wonders on children’s bedrooms. When considering addons, think about your brood and their future. You’ll likely call this place home through many changes in both size and interest. Make sure bedrooms can house a moody teen with plenty of wall space for their posters (wait, do kids even hang posters anymore?) and that the floorplan is accommodating to growing and changing needs for privacy, or a safe common place to hang with friends.
TOP PICKS:
BUILT IN BUNKBEDS.
If you’re tight for space but growing in size, recessed bedding is a great way to free up much-needed floor space.
A LARGE ENTRYWAY.
Ugh! Shoes and jackets and book bags galore. Does your cluttered entryway drive you crazy? Are you tired of endlessly asking for items to be properly placed? Make it almost impossible for your family to ditch their stuff at the door, with built in storage right as they enter.

As residential building and buying skyrockets in San Joaquin, many families are opting to buy into new neighborhoods. This means you get a brand spanking new home. No one has dirtied the floor, not one strand of hair has made its way down the drain. It’s pristine. Not only is it squeaky clean, it’s a clean slate asking for your influence. Many buyers welcome customizable additions to standard builds, from fixture and finish options, countertops, backsplash and flooring, to structural modifications like foyers and lofts. If you’d like to add things like garage space, bedrooms, a fireplace or outdoor BBQ hookup, or make plumbing or electrical changes, nail it

BUILDING for PETS
Animals are an important part of the family, and the functionality of a home directly influences the ease or annoyance of fur babies. Flooring, and lot size and landscaping are major factors to consider. Opt for an almost all tile home to avoid carpet stains and smells. It’s much easier to control pet dander build-up, accidents, and dirt in general when you can truly clean your floor’s surface. Consider your pet when you consider lot style and placement, and landscaping. Is your dog a runner? Is fencing required to keep him safe out back? Will your landscaping investment go down the drain as he digs up freshly planted shrubbery and flower beds, or does plenty of space and nice green grass keep him content? www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

down and discuss with your builder ASAP, as it may influence permits needed. Take time to really consider such elements, and their importance (to you), as you talk budget and plans. Changing your mind halfway through the process, or once you’re already settled, will not only be a big inconvenience, but timely and costly, too. You don't want to be kicking yourself while living in a brand new home, for not adding that mud room. However, some custom additions—like paint, lighting and fixtures, crown molding, and even some appliances—can be money-saving DIYs that come after your purchase.
BUILDING for FOREVER
If you’re approaching this new buy as the final hooray, think to your future. Maybe a parent will live with you one day—making that extra bedroom crucial. Smart Room technology and alarm features can keep you safe and confident, both at home and away. And lot location influences everyday life, sometimes eliminating the need to drive, or, distancing you from friends, family, and businesses and organizations. You don’t want to kick off retirement with a costly home remodel, and a few thoughtful additions can help with that.
TOP PICKS:
ARTIFICIAL GRASS.
This one seems like a no brainer. Artificial grass boasts so many perks—it’s always bright green and perfectly trimmed, free of random yellow pee stains.
AIR PURIFIERS.
Consider investing in the upgrade or addition of heating and air options that focus on pet dander, cut back on allergies, and keep your home smelling fresh.

SERVICE YOUR HVAC UNIT & SAVE BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Summer is upon us, and it’s hot! The last inconvenience you want to deal with is an AC unit that isn’t working properly. Not only do old or damaged air conditioning units not cool effectively, they drive up monthly energy costs and could have a negative impact on your family’s and employee’s health. Preventative maintenance is the key to a longer lasting unit. The upfront cost pays off in the long run, because when a unit is working well, it doesn’t work as hard to cool or heat your business or home. This not only reduces the monthly cost of heating and cooling, it helps the longevity of the unit. The average HVAC unit should last between ten and fifteen years. To get the most out of your unit, take care of it with routine servicing and preventative techniques. It’s best to do a summer service for the air conditioning and also a winter service for the heater yearly. New units can get very costly, so taking care of the unit keeps a significant amount of money in your wallet. Optimizing airflow can be as simple as changing out the filters and cleaning the condenser coils. The average business or home

GO MID-CENTURY
MODERN BY NORA HESTON TARTE
The home decorating market is experiencing a resurgence of mid-century modern styles, and contemporary products are trending. Window dressings play an important role in recreating the home design of that era, playing with retro color palettes and clean, sleek lines. So where do you find brightly-colored roller shades and floor-to-ceiling, pinch pleat drapes? Budget Blinds in Stockton is stocking their inventory with all of the styles appropriate for this trending design, with a few upgrades customers will love. While giving a nod to decades past, San Joaquinians don’t want to skimp on today’s technology, giving a millennial twist to retro designs with motorization integration and cordless systems. Not only are these upgrades convenient, and great for homes with kids and pets who could get tangled up in long cords, the elimination of the cords adds to the sleek chic style, producing lines that are simpler yet. When it comes to drapes, the pinch pleat was—and is again—all the rage. Long, lean pan-
els offering complete wall coverage are favorites from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, and home decorators after that mid-century modern décor are bringing them back in style. But what’s behind those stylish curtains? Aluminum blinds featuring wide cloth tapes, punctuated by contrasting colors, are a staple of the era. Ditch the neutral tones and go for cherry to give your window treatments just a touch of mod flair. Wood blinds and woven wood shades (best when paired with knotty pine wood paneling) are another staple of the past that decorators are still using today. Stained wood is a great way to incorporate natural colors into mid-century décor without choosing shades that will fade into the background. Hoping to get the look on a budget? The roller shade is the perfect solution to the new mid-century modern home that needs window treatments that won’t break the bank. Don’t be afraid to punctuate shades with the patterned valances many 1950s housewives adored; or let the shades speak for themselves by ordering up a set in a chevron print. Gone are the days window treatments served function over fashion; get shades that cater to your home needs while adding to stylish décor. SCHEDULE A FREE CONSULTATION:

ATILED APPROACH TO HOME
RENEWAL BY COPPER WILLIAMS
Whether you’ve just purchased your own home-sweet-home, or you’re looking for a decorative facelift to go with a new set of furniture, there’s always a realm of opportunities readily available with remodeling. A simple backsplash swap can breathe new life into your kitchen, while a shower upgrade is perfect for transforming the bathroom into your own spa retreat at home. When you’re ready to make the plunge to pamper yourself, we know exactly who to turn to.
From the quiet backroads of the Lodi Appellation, to the big city streets of San Francisco, no kitchen or bathroom, floor plan or fire place, poses too great a challenge for the brothers behind every remarkable remodeling at Lodi Quality Tile and Granite. Twenty-five years of combined experience has given Freddy and Marcos Ramirez the edge to elevate their industry, setting their work apart from other area contractors by offering a quality product for a fair price. Lodi Quality Tile and Granite excels in floors and kitchen and shower remodels, typically in residential homes. But despite the company name, the brothers don’t limit customers when it comes to materials. “We do granite, quartz, all types of materials,” Marcos says. And to put it simply, Marcos adds, “We do everything.” They’ve become known for using a level-cure system for sub leveling floors on all projects, a perk many won’t find with other contractors. “A lot of people don’t use it, and the only reason is because it’s a lot of prep and knowledge. It’s a pretty exact practice,” Marcos explains. “It’s kind of tricky.” Although a more expensive process, its results have proven its worth time and time again. LEARN MORE:

ECO-FRIENDLY FLOORING BY NORA HESTON TARTE
As San Joaquin residents move to more eco-friendly lifestyles, the home design market is working to create sustainable flooring options with a variety of styles and textures to meet the demand. While large metro markets like San Francisco and Sacramento dominate the niche space, Classic Design Interiors brings these flooring options to San Joa-

quin County with a 6,000 square foot showroom in Lodi. “Because of the big box stores, flooring has become a commodity item for many people. However, it is such an integral part of the design and function of the home, that we believe that showcasing lowcost leaders and pushing clients to only look at price point does a huge disservice. That’s why we offer all quality and design levels and routinely beat the big box stores on price,” says Tiffany Gomes, owner of Classic Design. Whether you’re looking for tile, wood, or tile that looks like wood, the Lodi business stocks a premium selection of colors and styles. In most wood floors, chemicals are used to create the boards installed in your home. However, sustainable flooring removes the use of toxic chemicals used in manufacturing. All eco-friendly flooring must meet IAQ (indoor air quality) limits, however, not all eco-friendly floors are created equal. Ask questions about the floors you are installing to ensure they are the healthiest for your family. Another reason eco-friendly flooring is gaining popularity in the Central Valley is its focus
on sustainable practices. The word sustainable relates to both the material itself—wood, tile, laminate, etc. that reduce the demand on ecosystems—as well as sustainable practices, including harvest, production, use, and disposal. The same rules apply to tile. Marketed as “green flooring,” these materials are gathered and created with responsibility to the environment in mind, meaning they reduce the amount of harmful chemicals released into the air, lower environmental impact throughout the life-cycle of the product, and are safer products for consumers. “We offer many products that are only found in Sacramento and the Bay Area so that our clients have the best to choose from,” Tiffany says. “We have done some stunning kitchen and bathroom remodels, which really show the ‘wow’ factor.” In addition to quality customer service and a wide selection of sustainable products, Classic Design Interiors is the recipient of more than 70 awards and has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. “Our before and after pictures always make me smile,” Tiffany says.

SAVE MONEY
THIS SUMMER BY JENNIFER MOULAISON
Summer is in full swing and temperatures are reaching sweltering heights, which makes us truly appreciate the hardworking air conditioning units that banish the heat, and the solar panels that soak up the sun. When those summertime heroes need a little TLC, it’s time to connect with an industry leader. Finding the right air and solar service company is as important as ever, with U.S. homeowners spending $429 billion each year on air conditioners alone, according to the Department of Energy. Keeping air and solar units serviced and switching to high-efficiency units can cut costs of ownership by up to 50 percent. Naturally—reliability, reputation and experience are of top concern when choosing a specialist. And with 50 years of experience in the industry, it’s little wonder why the fully licensed, bonded, and insured Rod Johnson Air and Solar has earned an A+ rating for both residential and commercial air and solar service. But there are even more compelling reasons to look to Rod Johnson for 50

your air and solar needs, and that’s for the inspiring way this company pays forward their own success. Rod Johnson himself was recently awarded Business Man of the Year and was named so for his legacy of remarkable charitable involvement. From the Pete Paulsen Car Show to the Alzheimer’s Walk—and even performing repairs at no cost for the Stockton Homeless Shelter and various battered women’s shelters—Rod Johnson Air and Solar demonstrates a true passion for giving back to the community. They’re also revered for their annual turkey drive, donating over 10,000 pounds of turkey to the Stockton Emergency Food Bank last year. In lieu of interoffice gift giving, each employee sponsors a child from the Child Abuse Prevention Council, and provides them with gifts. This May Rod Johnson Air and Solar held their third Annual Golf Tournament supporting Mary Graham Children’s Foundation, which grows significantly each year and allows even more to be given to the Children’s Foundation. When asked why the dedication to giving back, Rod explains, “I want to pay back the community that’s made this company a success, and giving back always has a positive impact on the business. It’s amazing what we can do as a company when we focus on giving back.” LEARN MORE:

A LASTING PARTNERSHIP
ROOTED IN STYLE
BY
NORA HESTON TARTE
For years, Al Nunes and Mike Nicholls worked side-by-side at Bruener’s, a sixteen-store furniture chain in Northern California. When upward mobility threatened to move them both to the Bay Area, Nunes and Nicholls decided to go it on their own, opening a furniture store in San Joaquin County that would keep their young families in their hometown. Thornton House Furniture got its name from its first location on Thornton Road in Stockton, when in 1978 it was opened in a 4,000 sq. ft. building that resembled a house. Today, the company has moved to a 40,000 sq. ft. office building in Lodi complete with a 17,000 sq. ft. showroom filled with everything from carpet and whole-home furnishings to wall hangings and home décor, a true testament to the company’s growth over the last 40 years. “We’re very, very serious about interior design,” Al says. Occasionally they sell individual pieces of furniture to customers, but in most cases interior designers at Thornton House Furniture are building lasting relationships with clients to meet all of their design needs. “We really get involved with the client when it comes to the design side of it,” Al says. In addition to residential design, the pros at Thornton House take on commercial projects at area

churches, restaurants, country clubs, and even wineries. If you’ve visited Oak Farm Vineyards since its remodel in 2014, you’ve seen the interior design work firsthand. Thornton House staff chose all of the patio furniture as well as the leather chairs located inside the tasting room. It’s the same service Thornton House offers it’s residential customers—in-home consultations, measurements, and recommendations based on personal needs and style. With over 50 years in the business Al and Mike admit, “we know a lot about our product and a lot about placement.” While the company carries a lot of everything in the showroom, and even more products available by special order, customers are also sure to find trending pieces at Thornton House. Currently, the showroom is stocked with much of the clean, simple lines popular as of late, in addition to the rustic, textured finishes gaining popularity in the area (including trending grey finishes and distressed treatments). “It fits in with our wine country feel,” Al says. “Our selection of product meets everyone’s needs.” Satisfaction of product and service are also guaranteed. “We’ll take care of the customer. Even if the manufacturer wouldn’t stand behind it, we’ll stand behind it.” STOP BY:

Incorporating natural elements into design is a no-brainer for outdoor entertaining. In addition to water features and stone facades, create an entertaining space with purpose and flare using fire. For summer
nights roasting marshmallows or those Central Valley winter days spent outdoors, there’s more than one way to integrate the powerful, transformative element of ancient times into an outside area.

FIRE LINES.
Fire doesn’t have to be the centerpiece of a sitting area. Use fire lines for an out-of-the-box solution to bringing the element into your backyard. Long, skinny fire pits can be used around pools or to create borders around other features of a yard. These emit more heat than the traditional fire pit or table and are best left to homes without small children or curious pets.
FIRE TABLES.
FIRE WALL.
POINTS TO CONSIDER:
Turn that fire line on its side for a design feature that will wow guests. A fire wall is the perfect way to separate areas in a large backyard, akin to an outdoor fireplace, often with two open sides.
If small children live at home, safety is key. Many fire features are open, but screens can be purchased to protect curious kids. Other elements are best saved for homes with older children. Continue the use of natural elements in your backyard by creating seats out of thick-cut tree branches. Sink bomas below ground level and surround with dense plants to create an easy outdoor sanctuary. For bowl-shaped or open fire pits and bomas, a drain is essential for stopping the buildup of rainwater, which could destroy the feature. Consider surroundings. Open fire features should be placed far away from flammable plants and boundary fences to ensure safety and reduce fire hazards.

Take al fresco dining to a new level with a fire table. These surfaces offer a place for eating with fire as the natural centerpiece. Not only do the flames keep you—and food— warm, they can be used to roast marshmallows for a s’mores dessert. It’s a quick way to add fire to your entertaining space without a backyard overhaul.
at home
OUTDOOR OVEN.
HOME & GARDEN
Give your fire feature more purpose with the introduction of a pizza oven. Gorgeous stone ovens create a focal point with purpose in open backyard spaces, and the traditional Italian cooking appliances add authentic flavor to homemade pies.
COMBINE FIRE AND WATER.
Fire and water are two of earth’s natural elements, and they both make great additions to a backyard entertainment space. Combine both elements into one elegant design with a fire and water table— part cascading fountain, part fire pit.
FIRE PITS.
Create a centerpiece for your sitting area with a fire pit. Whether it’s flanked with recycled countertops, stone, or brick, a fire pit adds design with function to your yard. Gather with guests on cool evenings to enjoy the ambiance created by a crackling fire. Unlike a fireplace, which is closed off on several sides, fire pits welcome gathering and create space for conversation for camaraderie.
IN THE WATER.
Another way to combine fire and water is to place your fire-centric gathering place into the landscape of the pool. High-end design clients use this model to create an outdoor oasis that could rival the entertaining space of luxury resorts. The trick is to create a seating area that juts into the pool, complete with walkway so guests don’t have to get wet, and install a traditional fire pit as its centerpiece.

SURPRISING LESSON
LEARNED ON THE PATIO BY KATHLEEN JENNISON
I’d been searching for the perfect patio furniture for a long time and hadn’t found a product that satisfied my standards of quality, value, and price. Last fall I finally made a great find and outfitted my backyard with all new outdoor furniture. We didn’t get a lot of time to enjoy it before winter hit, but we did discover that the chairs are super comfortable. Bob (my husband) even wanted to bring the lounge chairs into the house because he thought they were more comfortable than his living room chair (I said no). Now that spring is here, we popped open a bottle of Dom Perignon Vintage 2005 champagne and made a tray of delectable snacks to enjoy in our comfy chairs around the fire pit. It was absolute perfection. So, what you can learn about design from my night out on the patio?
SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO SPLURGE. Our beautiful bottle of cham-
56

|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE AT HOME 2017
pagne was so good, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though it was a gift, I realized that sometimes you need to splurge and get the good stuff. This is the same with design. It could be expensive marble tile on your kitchen backsplash or a piece of artwork that makes your heart skip a beat. Whatever your splurge is, it is essential to your soul (or in my case patio furniture!).
YOU NEED A VARIETY OF COLORS, TEXTURES, AND PATTERNS. Our snack tray was beautifully prepared by my hubby with salami, dried fruit, olives, cheese stuffed pepperoncini, smoked almonds, brie cheese and cracked peppercorn crackers. This mix of color, texture, and pattern looked too pretty to eat. This is what happens when we design a space for you, when we carefully select the perfect mix of colors, texture, and pattern to make something truly delectable. When you walk into your room, it feels right. It makes you happy. It makes you feel at ease. These feelings don’t happen by chance; they happen because we’ve spent many, many hours developing those emotions through design, by learning what is important to you.
THE RICH BALANCES THE TART, THE SWEET COMPLIMENTS THE SALTY. I don’t care for bitter or sour foods, but the harmony of the champagne and mix of
treats complimented each other effortlessly. I didn’t cringe with a bite of pepperoncini because the sweet fruit and savory salami balanced the flavors perfectly. Finding balance in your rooms (whether they be indoor or outdoor) is important because an unbalanced anything (work, life, and spaces) can be uncomfortable. As interior designers, we’ve become quite adept at creating interesting spaces whose visual objects are equally weighted. The tart black accent wall is balanced with the sweet and soft flowing drapery and the space feels comfortable and inviting.
WISH YOU WERE SITTING WITH ME ON MY PATIO? I know I can’t bring you onto my patio to share in snacks, sips and relaxation, but as you start planning your summer parties, making your playlist, and getting ready to enjoy the good life on your patio, I can outfit it with outdoor furniture that will make your backyard the envy of the neighborhood. I’ve got two outdoor room vignettes in the Design Workshop just waiting for you. Come check them out and get great and stylish patio furniture perfect for outdoor living! TOP-NOTCH SPAS & CUSTOMER SERVICE Steve Goldstein believes in the power of customer service. With more than 30 years in the spa and hearth product industries, he says it’s his dedication to quality customer service that has given his business staying power, while so many of his competitors have closed their doors. “It’s a bit of a fickle industry… spa and stove/fireplace companies come and go all the time,” Steve shares, adding that in 2008 he had 27 competitors and in 2009 it dwindled to five. “This business requires great customer service. I saw a lacking in that.” In 1986, Steve was working in sales at The Spa Doctor. Nine months after opening, his boss called Steve into the office to tell him the shop would be closing its doors. Steve saw an opportunity. “I just knew that I could do it as good or better than anybody else that was doing it at the time,” he says. So, with good credit and a firm handshake, Steve secured a business loan and bought The Spa Doctor from his employer. Thirty days later, he was in business for himself, and 30 years after that he not only owns and operates the Modesto store, which also sells fireplaces, fireplace inserts, stoves, and other hearth heating products, he’s opened a second location with the same name in Stockton. While Steve has a full staff of sales, service, delivery, and administration people that handle the day-to-day operations at both locations of his Spa & Stove business, he still is active on a daily basis supporting his staff and interacts directly with almost every customer with in-home consultations prior to installation. The key is to treat every customer—whether they’re buying an o-ring or a $10,000 spa—with the same level of respect. The Spa Doctor isn’t strictly sales, repairs, and servicing, either. For hot tubs, Steve personally will visit 58

a client’s home to oversee landscaping progress and other projects to ensure the right steps are being taken before The Spa Doctor installs the spa. And for stoves and fireplaces, he and his staff review each installation to insure all the questions are answered prior to the installation. For every item they sell, The Spa Doctor also offers repair, install, service, and a variety of accessories – the customer experience both before and after the sale is the key to their success. They have two beautiful showrooms, one
each in Modesto and Stockton, where customers can shop in a “no-pressure” atmosphere for the hot tub or fireplace product that is just right for them. “I was kind of raised with a service attitude toward people,” Steve shares. And that outlook on business is what he credits for keeping The Spa Doctor thriving since 1986. COME AND SEE FOR YOURSELF:

SAN JOAQUIN GOES GREEN The future is green, and San Joaquin County residents are starting to take notice of their ecological footprint. As we each adjust our recycling habits and other daily impacts on the environment such as smarter product use, San Joaquin Solid Waste lends support. With multiple recycling programs and environmental stewardship activities, SJ Solid Waste is able to promote a greener San Joaquin County. “The Communities of San Joaquin County strive to make the county a greener place to live while protecting the environment for future generations to enjoy,” says Corey Collins, management analyst for San Joaquin County Public Works Solid Waste Division. “In this day and age of being environmentally friendly, more and more materials are being kept out of the landfill through reuse, recycling, and safe disposal programs.” Through the Solid Waste department, community members can safely and easily dispose of hazardous materials, as well as recycle everyday items such as bottles and cans, electronics, used tires, and more. ness is there, with Guillain-Barré Syndrome of particular concern, but the ultimate trepidation is for women who are pregnant or will become pregnant over the course of the next year. Because the virus can be transmitted perinatally and congenitally, women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should take extra precaution against mosquito bites to reduce the risk of Zika-related birth defects. “The District is actively looking for invasive Aedes mosquitoes that have made their way to California,” explains Aaron Devencenzi, public information officer at San Joaquin County Mosquito and Vector Control District, an independent special district governed by a board of trustees. “These species have the ability to carry Zika, dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever. District laboratory personnel are placing and collecting traps made specifically to catch these new invasive mosquitoes.” The agency asks that all residents call in daytime-biting mosquitoes to help reduce the threat of disease-carrying mosquitoes in San Joaquin County. “The District continues to protect public health through preventative techniques, as well as providing surveillance for potentially new invasive mosquitoes and exotic diseases they may carry,” Aaron says. HOME & GARDEN
THE SMART HOME BY JENNIFER MOULAISON
Remember those movies made for TV from the nineties about futuristic homes taken over by technology? It turns out they weren’t that far off,
only without the melodramatic endings. Advancements in technology continue to impact all areas of our lives—particularly in the home.
CLEAR THE AIR
Ever wondered why high-end retail stores always smell so good? Air Aroma has built their successful brand around scent marketing, developing unique scents for some of the biggest names in luxury retail. Through cold-air technology, Air Aroma also offers a collection of scent diffusers for the home, ranging from sleek and discrete to serious systems that attach to your HVAC for out-of-sight-out-of-mind scent disbursement. From $349, AirAroma.com.
PET TECH

TECH THAT COOKS
Robot chefs are still in the works but today’s technology can ensure dinner’s ready by the time you get home with Crock-Pot’s WiFi-enabled slow cooker. Throw everything in the pot in the morning and monitor its progress and adjust cook time and temperature throughout the day through the WeMo application on your cell phone. $129, Amazon.com.

HUBS THAT AREN’T HIDEOUS
Technology has finally fused with design to offer a WiFi router that isn’t so cumbersome and unsightly we’re forced to stuff it away in a closet. Samsung’s SmartThings Hub is as pleasing to the eye as it is effective in connecting wirelessly with a wide range of smart devices to make them run better and more compatibly.
