HOW TO: MASTER the GALLERY WALL

COMMIT TO A DESIGN IDEA

Chances are your gallery wall is going to feature a lot of frames, but how do you choose which frames to go with? “I like to either have all the frames the same or have it be really eclectic where all of the frames are a different size or style,” says Kathleen Jennison, an interior designer and owner of KTG Design Co. The best rule of thumb is to commit to one extreme or the other. Choose frames that all belong together, or mix up colors, sizes, and shapes. Mixing it up can create a really fun wall, Kathleen says.

WHAT IS IT?

An artistic display of items that are important to you, ranging from frames to photos to wood signs and more.

WHAT TO INCLUDE:

A gallery wall can honestly include whatever you like, but sentimental items are often at the top of the “must have” list. Choose family photos or important portraits and/ or décor that fits your personality including wood signs, metal crosses, small clocks, or homemade items. Items you’ve collected from trips or letters you can frame also make good picks. 16

CHOOSE COMPLIMENTARY ITEMS

Gallery walls typically include several design elements, and even if you’ve decided to embrace the eclectic look, it’s important that some cohesion exists. Find consistency with the overall style of the wall such as frames that all look shabby-chic, or have modern cuts and edges. Mixing too many design ideas will make the wall look messy.

CONSIDER MONOCHROMATIC

Create a wall out of all black and white photos and frames. The monochromatic look ties everything together, even if the photos themselves are different styles and subjects.

PLAN AHEAD

Don’t just start throwing items onto the wall. While it is possible to continue to add new pieces to a gallery wall, the initial design should be thought out. Put the design together on the floor first. This way you can easily move pieces around to find the right fit. When it’s perfect, start putting it onto the wall.

BE CREATIVE

Gallery walls don’t have to fit any one definition. Use your imagination to come up with your own ideas of what can go on the wall. Mirrors in different sizes and empty frames can be on display, but so can large seashells and pressed flowers. Play with color, size, and texture. Above all, this wall should represent what you love. There are four natural elements—earth, air, fire, and water. Challenge yourself to bring all four of these elements into a space if you can. Those potted plants and real dirt decorating each corner can represent Earth, along with any wooden elements you’ve chosen. Air again works with the plants bringing oxygen into your space, but it’s also echoed in the bright, light colors and airy feel of the home. Get creative and consider airflow, as well, by adding ceiling fans to each room. Fire may be an obvious one. If you have a fireplace, this can be your representation of the hottest element, whether it’s gas, electric, or you fill an empty one with candles. If you don’t have a fireplace, consider hanging a wall unit to bring in hints of stone and fire, or place candles throughout the home. Fire can also be echoed in items that represent heat. Lastly, water. We often see backyards with fountains and water features. Why not bring those items inside? Select a cool, tabletop fountain and enjoy the calming, trickling sound of water without leaving your home. For a less obvious interpretation, use textures that mimic waves, choose blue hues to accent the room, or hang a large piece of artwork that features water. Expert Tip: Use all four elements, not just one or two.

LET THE COLOR PALETTE DO THE WORK.

There is an airy quality to homes that blend the inside and outside. Part of this is due to the natural sunlight and greenery throughout, but the home’s base color palette can actually create that wide-open feel that mimics the outdoors. That’s in part because light colors can make a space feel bigger and brighter overall. Choose a white kitchen with light bamboo floors or wood countertops and neutral furniture in tans, whites, and grays. Don’t let the palette get boring though. Bright hues like blues, greens, and yellows can be incorporated for a pop of color. Expert Tip: Let mother nature be your guide. Take a walk around your backyard or a hike on a nearby trail and pay attention to the colors that surround you. Then, bring those colors inside with paint colors, fabric swatches, and other design elements.

ral-looking—we won’t fault you for choosing a high-end vegan leather over the real stuff) will remind visitors of the beauty of nature when they step into your home. If you like design features that are a little more loud and fun, add animal hides and prints to the space. Expert Tip: Continue the trend in smaller pieces by adding decorative wicker balls, cream-colored candles that smell like garden roses, linen curtains in light shades, and other final touches.

LET THE OUTDOORS PEAK IN.

HOW TO EXPERTLY ADD A POP OF COLOR IN YOUR HOME DECOR  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

DO go big with new furniture.

Want that pop of color to make a big splash? If you’re not afraid to commit to one bright hue, go all out by selecting dining chairs, bar stools, or an armchair in a new shade. Instead of choosing several small items to represent your pop of color, this finishes the theme with one big piece. However, you can then play off of the shade in other parts of the room. Just be careful not to go overboard.

DON’T overdo it. A neutral color palette is all the rage—have you seen Kim and Kanye’s all-white mansion?—but a complete lack of color can feel a little dull for some. A lot of people are embracing the neutrals—tans, grays, and white—and a punch of bright color may be just the pop your neutral home needs. “We usually add color either in artwork or accessories like drapery or pillows,” says Kathleen Jennison, an interior designer and owner of KTG Design Co. DO choose colorful artwork.

Artwork is one way interior design experts like Kathleen Jennison add color to a room. If the color palette is neutral, there aren’t a lot of rules on what artwork to include. Simply choose a piece that speaks to you and introduces some new shades into the room.

It’s a proven fact that just being around fresh flowers increases one’s happiness, reduces anxiety, and promotes relaxation—making them worth every penny! Make a Bouquet at Home 1. Choose flowers that haven’t fully opened up yet. Although the bigger, fuller looking blooms on display may be the ones that first catch your eye, choosing flowers that haven’t fully bloomed yet will allow you to enjoy the bouquet a few days longer than you otherwise would have.

2. Trim the ends of your flowers every time they are taken out of water. Since most cut flowers drink from the stems, it’s important to give a fresh, clean cut before putting them into the vase. Be sure to cut them at a slanted angle, so the flowers are able to suck up as much water as possible.

3. Choose a vase that fits the flowers, and then cut to a length that is proportionate to the vase’s height. Oftentimes trimming a few extra inches

off the stems of flowers will make them appear prettier and fuller. It’s a simple trick that makes a big difference!

4. Remove all of the leaves that fall below the water line from the stem. Leaves that are left to sit in water will rot, resulting in bacteria growing in the water. Keep the water clean and free of slimy green stuff, and flowers will last much longer. 5. Add a handful of ice cubes to the water in your vase. Keeping flowers in cold water causes them to open a little slower. You can also store the bouquet in the fridge if you are trying to keep it looking fresh and at it’s best for that backyard dinner party you’re hosting in a few days.

EMBRACE THE REGION’S BOUNTY IN YOUR HOME DÉCOR  BY NORA HESTON TARTE It all started with a dog bed. Rick Serna was walking around a craft fair with his wife when they stumbled upon a small dog bed made out of a wine barrel. They immediately thought it would be the perfect place for their Pekingese to rest, but one look at the price tag had Rick shaking his head. “I bet I could make that,” he told his wife. And he did. After finishing the piece, Rick posted a photo online, and the orders started flowing in. Three years later, the Stockton-native (who now resides in Lodi) is filling upward of 50 orders

during his busy months, but they aren’t just for dog beds. “I make 60 or so items,” Rick says. Through his company Lodi Barrel Designs Rick turns out just about everything you possibly could make out of a wine barrel from liquor cabinets to lazy Susans, wall clocks to wood décor. “I get inspired by just going through Pinterest,” he says. “I look for wood-made items, not necessarily wine barrels, and I try to make them out of wine barrels.” Lucky for Rick, living in Lodi not only provides a good place to get used wine barrels—he’s

recently picked up barrels from Scotto’s Wine & Cider and Jeremy Wine Company—it also provides the right kind of clientele. “[We’re in] the zinfandel capital of the world,” Rick laughs. “Everybody wants something wine inspired.” In addition to turning out multiples of his best sellers—one of which is a four-tiered succulent planter—Rick accepts custom orders, too. He’s currently working on his first bar, a time-consuming project that includes glass shelves, a space for liquor, and a designated section for wine bottles. When it comes to picking out barrels, Rick admits he’s picky.

Not just any barrel will do. Ones that have been damaged aren’t a lot of use to the craftsman because he can’t use the heads to make clocks and lazy Susans. Those with wine stains, however, sell just fine. In fact, Rick started making his lazy Susans inside-out so that the inside of the barrels with their rich, purple-red color shows through. Rick says these items sell better than the versions that display the cleaner outside of the barrels. You can find Rick and his art online or at local craft fairs and festivals. Admittedly, the annual ZinFest is a big event for the company. “This is a great area, I think, for this business,” he says. THE 4 STONES TO KNOW GRANITE, MARBLE, QUARTZ, & QUARTZITE—WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU BUY?  BY NORA HESTON TARTE According to Geno Gonzales, vice president of operations at Marble Palace, Inc., 98 percent of San Joaquin County residents have one of four types of stone in their homes. The big players are granite, marble, quartz, and quartzite, and each one has its own perks. So how do you know which slab to put in your bathroom or kitchen? Read on. Our experts have you covered.

GRANITE

Geno calls this traditional surface the Old Faithful of stone countertops for bathrooms and kitchens (both indoor and out). “I think the biggest advantage to a granite countertop is it can be refurbished,” Geno says. That means, if you get chips or scratches on the surface, or the porous stone stains, it can be buffed out to look like new again without need for a replacement slab. That also means if it starts to look old and dingy, it can be polished to shine again. Plus, economically it’s a good pick—this stone tends to be less expensive than the others on this list, and it comes in slabs and tile. Expert Tip: If you have kids or are particularly messy in the kitchen, consider a sealant to avoid stains in the first place. “It’s classic; it’s a traditional stone,” Geno says. “It never goes out of style.” 46

Who should get it? Really anyone, including those who have kids or pets and need a durable stone. Make it look expensive: Upgrade to an exotic granite. It may still cost less than some of the more high-end stones, but it offers better finishes or more interesting color palettes than some of the mainstays you may see in every home.

QUARTZ

Quartz has made a name for itself in the market because of its reputation for being durable, and the finish does tend to last much longer than most. The man-made material is less expensive than its natural counterpart quartzite, but offers similar looking finishes that can mimic limestone, concrete, or marble. In addition to being more economically friendly, quartz is pretty trendy. Buyers who want to get the most bang for their buck should look for American-made products.

Quartzite is the hardest stone made by nature. It features unique patterns and movement characteristics that are formed deep in the earth, heated by nature. It is an especially expensive product that customers looking for a luxury item will go after. “Quartzite has made a big jump into the market,” says Geno. That’s because it offers buyers a high-end, glossy look without the maintenance of marble. This stone offers the natural imperfections that are skipped when making quartz, but still has a near-perfect glass finish that other stones can’t offer. “Quartzite is the only natural stone that can produce that glass-like finish,” Geno says. “It doesn’t look naturally made. It’s a unique aesthetic.” Each piece of quartzite looks different than the next, which is a huge benefit for those who want a truly unique product. Another benefit is that when it comes to the extreme hardness of the natural product, you also get durability.

Who should get it? Those who want to be ontrend and premier buyers who want a piece none of their neighbors will have. Make it look expensive: No extra work needed here! This product is a luxury item on its own.

MARBLE

Marble offers an elegant look, but some people shy away from it because it’s easier to damage, Sean Bunnel, custom division manager at Marble Palace, Inc., explains. “Marble—most people are scared of it,” he says. That being said, there are buyers who gravitate toward marble because it meets their aesthetic, and they don’t have to worry too much about damage in the kitchen. It is, however, mostly recommended in bathrooms and areas that are lightly used due to the porous nature of the stone. The other downfall is that if marble does get damaged, it can’t be refurbished the way granite can. Expert Tip: Get it if you love the look, just be careful of spills or putting items that are too hot on top of the counter. Items like counter mats and trivets will be your friends!

Who should get it? Those that are going for a luxurious look in their kitchen and bathroom but do not have young kids that may damage the surface. Make it look expensive: Keep it in good shape and this product will always look like you spent a fortune on it!

Who should get it? Anyone who likes the look of natural stone but wants a more budget friendly alternative.

Divide your drawers

Start by putting spacers inside that messy utensil drawer. Purchase small, long plastic containers without lids and organize by utensil type. No more frantically rummaging around to find the ladle you left at the back.

De-clutter

Get mason jars or plastic containers that slide neatly into your cupboards and say goodbye to shoving cardboard boxes haphazardly onto shelves. Hang pots and pans or get pan racks for your cabinet. Pots and pans are some of the biggest contributors to clutter. They just aren’t made well for stacking. Luckily, people have designed beautiful pot and racks that will make it easier (and quieter) to grab your favorite pots and pans for cooking. If you prefer to give your home a bit of a rustic appeal, install small hooks into the ceiling and hang a few pots and pans instead. Just be sure you hang them securely and to not hang too many (more than four pots suspended starts to look like a hanging mess).
