LIVING CORAL
PANTONE’S COLOR OF THE YEAR BELONGS IN YOUR HOME Every year Pantone announces a new color of the year, and those who want to remain trendy find chic ways to incorporate the color into their lives. While wearing living
coral is one way to don 2019’s most popular hue, another creative way to embrace the shade is in your home décor. Redoing your décor annually would be too much for even a Real Housewife to bear, but adding pops of color here and there is one quick way to change things up routinely. Instead of buying new furniture or committing to a new paint shade, add throw pillows, accent furniture, candles, blankets, and small décor items in living coral to your living room and bedroom. With this shade, flowers and other floral decorations are good options for quick additions, and those who want to embrace the color’s origins may find themselves adding brightly colored bits of coral into their aquariums. If the color really speaks to you, embrace it. Living coral isn’t going to be out tomorrow just because it’s in today. If you’ve been meaning to redo your bedroom for some time and have fallen in love with the goldencoral hue, make it the statement color in a room. With a new set of sheets and a piece of artwork, you can bring living coral into your home semi-permanently without a huge overhaul. For added pizzazz, choose an accent wall and add wallpaper, paint, or decals in living coral to the room.

Pantone describes its color of the year like this: “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” Pantone chose this color for several reasons. One reason is its existence in nature, specifically in the ocean, seen in small fish and vibrant coral. It’s also a bright enough color to grab a follower’s attention on social media.

and you've got a brand new piece of furniture,” says Rachel Bonacorso from The Owl Box Vintage in Tracy. It’s an easy solution that’ll turn an old, worn piece into something fresh and fun.
REPURPOSE IT TO A DIFFERENT SPACE.
ADD PILLOWS AND THROWS.
It’s incredible the difference a new set of decorative pillows or a throw blanket can have on a piece of furniture. Adding a pop of brightness or a new texture to a room can make it feel brand new.

PAINT IT OR STAIN IT!
REVAMP! MAKING OLD FURNITURE NEW AGAIN
Vintage and rustic pieces give spaces character, turning houses into homes. But how can you take what
you already have and turn it into something you’ll be proud to show off to friends and family? Here are a few ideas for how to make the things you already own feel fresh and new while still maintaining charm and functionality.
RECOVER.
Take your old couch or favorite chair and find new material to cover it in. Sometimes when you’re tempted to get a new piece, all you really need is to replace part of it. Choose something that suits your new style and that will compliment the rest of your home décor.

Sometimes you want to replace a piece because it just no longer vibes well with the rest of the room. Before you donate it, think about trying to use it elsewhere in your home. Would that tea cart work well as a bedside table instead? How about the ottoman—could you put it in front of a window to make a window seat? Simply reimagining the function of the piece could give it a whole new look and feel while also saving you money on new furniture. HOW TO: MASTER the GALLERY WALL
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
CREATE AN ECLECTIC, YET EYE-CATCHING WORK OF WALL ART
TIPS
COMMIT TO A DESIGN IDEA
Chances are your gallery wall is going to feature a lot of frames, but how do you choose which frames to go with? “I like to either have all the frames the same or have it be really eclectic where all of the frames are a different size or style,” says Kathleen Jennison, an interior designer and owner of KTG Design Co. The best rule of thumb is to commit to one extreme or the other. Choose frames that all belong together, or mix up colors, sizes, and shapes. Mixing it up can create a really fun wall, Kathleen says.
WHAT IS IT?
An artistic display of items that are important to you, ranging from frames to photos to wood signs and more.
WHAT TO INCLUDE:
A gallery wall can honestly include whatever you like, but sentimental items are often at the top of the “must have” list. Choose family photos or important portraits and/ or décor that fits your personality including wood signs, metal crosses, small clocks, or homemade items. Items you’ve collected from trips or letters you can frame also make good picks. 16
at home magazine | 2019
CHOOSE COMPLIMENTARY ITEMS
Gallery walls typically include several design elements, and even if you’ve decided to embrace the eclectic look, it’s important that some cohesion exists. Find consistency with the overall style of the wall such as frames that all look shabby-chic, or have modern cuts and edges. Mixing too many design ideas will make the wall look messy.
CONSIDER MONOCHROMATIC
Create a wall out of all black and white photos and frames. The monochromatic look ties everything together, even if the photos themselves are different styles and subjects.
PLAN AHEAD
Don’t just start throwing items onto the wall. While it is possible to continue to add new pieces to a gallery wall, the initial design should be thought out. Put the design together on the floor first. This way you can easily move pieces around to find the right fit. When it’s perfect, start putting it onto the wall.
BE CREATIVE
Gallery walls don’t have to fit any one definition. Use your imagination to come up with your own ideas of what can go on the wall. Mirrors in different sizes and empty frames can be on display, but so can large seashells and pressed flowers. Play with color, size, and texture. Above all, this wall should represent what you love. WAYS TO
STAGE YOUR
HOME FOR SALE BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Getting ready to sell your home? Get the most bang for your buck by staging it for sale. The better your home looks in person and in photos, the more likely people are to put in an offer, which only escalates your final sale price. Try these tips to DIY, or hire a professional team to nail the look for you.
3. CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!
Spotless homes sell fast. We’re not talking about just the obvious either. Once you’ve finished vacuuming, move on to the baseboards, windowsills, blinds, and windows, Amanda suggests.
4. CREATE USEFUL SPACES
If you currently have an unused corner or a nook that’s more of a dumping ground than anything else, repurpose it. A little vision can show homebuyers' the best way to use a space, from sliding a desk into a nook to creating a reading corner in a master bedroom.
5. UTILIZE GOOD LIGHTING
Good lighting can really make a place shine. Bring in extra lamps to brighten up dark rooms or highlight a specific area of the home. One of the easiest things to do before a home showing is to open all of the blinds to let natural light in.
6. GO NEUTRAL
Bright wall colors and funky flooring may be exactly your style, but potential homebuyers may not share your cool taste. It’s best to keep a home as neutral as possible when listing it for sale. Run a coat of beige paint over over-the-top walls and tone down bright tiles with tame rugs.
7. MOVE FURNITURE AROUND 1. DE-CLUTTER
Too much stuff makes your home look smaller. Maximize space by de-cluttering bookshelves, countertops, tables, walls, and more. Removing excess furniture often makes the biggest impact.
2. REMOVE PERSONAL ITEMS
Sentimental items mean nothing to po-
18
at home magazine | 2019
tential buyers. In fact, they can make it hard for buyers to envision the space as their own. “The most important thing is to cleanse the house of a lot of the personal items you have in there,” says Amanda Denton, owner of Boxwood Staging, a new home staging company serving San Joaquin County. “Buyers want to picture themselves in the house.”
Sometimes an end table makes more sense in a sparse bedroom than an overcrowded living room, and that hallway desk might work nicely in a child’s bedroom. The items don’t have to live in these new spaces permanently, just long enough to appeal to buyers. TO LEARN MORE: RENEE SAENZ, REAL ESTATE AGENT 209-814-8821 Renee-Saenz-Sells.business.site

BRING THE
OUTSIDE
IN  BY NORA HESTON TARTE
EMBRACE THE BEAUTY OF THE OUTDOORS WITHIN YOUR HOME
22
at home magazine | 2019
Home trendsetters are telling us to start letting the outside through those doors and into our homes. But we’re not going to do it just because some hip interior designer told us to.
The fact is that there are reasons this trend isn’t slowing down. Fresh plants provide oxygen, flowers have been linked to a positive mood boost, and sunlight triggers feel-good hormones, which means letting the wild into your home can have some serious emotional benefits—not to mention it looks damn good. Flip through the pages for inspiration on how you can embrace the beauty of the outdoors within the confines of your home, and revel in the splendor embracing this trend can create. a publication of San Joaquin Magazine

fresh flowers on end tables and a few hanging plants in the kitchen. Make the trend functional by keeping fresh herb plants nearby to use in cooking. The aroma of each plant can create calming vibes, while the convenience of having them nearby will encourage homeowners to throw them into meals more often. To maximize the benefits, commit to a large plant in the living area. A tall fern or a rubber tree can thrive inside and take up residence in a corner where it is out of the way, but also contributing to the overall design. Trend alert: Pack tiny succulents onto a shelf in the bedroom or kitchen for a healthy dose of greenery. These miniature plants are hard to harm, which is good news for the homeowner without a green thumb.
USE BIG SLIDING GLASS DOORS AND OPEN WINDOWS TO WELCOME SUNLIGHT.
When natural light soaks through your windows in the afternoon, you’ll get an instant energy boost. If you already have a slider, make it a focal point. Choosing seamless sliding doors is one way to maximize light exposure while also embracing a more modern design. If your home lacks natural light, consider making some big changes. Contractors can turn large windows into sliding glass doors or cut out spaces for larger windows to let more light into dark rooms. When it comes to covering those windows, be smart. Thick, heavy drapes are not conducive to the light, flowy look you’re going for. Instead, use light-colored curtains or blinds that are easy to roll up so you’re maximizing light exposure where it counts, and if your home won’t suffer from a terrible glare, consider skipping the coverings altogether in places it makes sense.
TURN TO PLANTS FOR A BIG TRANSFORMATION.
This just may be the easiest modification you can make to let some of the glory of nature into your home. Start small with bouquets of 24

25
CONSIDER NATURAL ELEMENTS.
There are four natural elements—earth, air, fire, and water. Challenge yourself to bring all four of these elements into a space if you can. Those potted plants and real dirt decorating each corner can represent Earth, along with any wooden elements you’ve chosen. Air again works with the plants bringing oxygen into your space, but it’s also echoed in the bright, light colors and airy feel of the home. Get creative and consider airflow, as well, by adding ceiling fans to each room. Fire may be an obvious one. If you have a fireplace, this can be your representation of the hottest element, whether it’s gas, electric, or you fill an empty one with candles. If you don’t have a fireplace, consider hanging a wall unit to bring in hints of stone and fire, or place candles throughout the home. Fire can also be echoed in items that represent heat. Lastly, water. We often see backyards with fountains and water features. Why not bring those items inside? Select a cool, tabletop fountain and enjoy the calming, trickling sound of water without leaving your home. For a less obvious interpretation, use textures that mimic waves, choose blue hues to accent the room, or hang a large piece of artwork that features water. Expert Tip: Use all four elements, not just one or two.
LET THE COLOR PALETTE DO THE WORK.
There is an airy quality to homes that blend the inside and outside. Part of this is due to the natural sunlight and greenery throughout, but the home’s base color palette can actually create that wide-open feel that mimics the outdoors. That’s in part because light colors can make a space feel bigger and brighter overall. Choose a white kitchen with light bamboo floors or wood countertops and neutral furniture in tans, whites, and grays. Don’t let the palette get boring though. Bright hues like blues, greens, and yellows can be incorporated for a pop of color. Expert Tip: Let mother nature be your guide. Take a walk around your backyard or a hike on a nearby trail and pay attention to the colors that surround you. Then, bring those colors inside with paint colors, fabric swatches, and other design elements.
26
at home magazine | 2019
UTILIZE NATURAL MATERIALS.
Whether they are natural materials—like leather and wood—or man-made materials that mimic what’s natural, choosing fabrics and textures that echo what is found outdoors is another clever way to bring that calming outdoor feel inside. Large wooden trays, wood or quartz countertops, leather couches, seashells, stone floors, etc. All of these natural (or natu-
ral-looking—we won’t fault you for choosing a high-end vegan leather over the real stuff) will remind visitors of the beauty of nature when they step into your home. If you like design features that are a little more loud and fun, add animal hides and prints to the space. Expert Tip: Continue the trend in smaller pieces by adding decorative wicker balls, cream-colored candles that smell like garden roses, linen curtains in light shades, and other final touches.
LET THE OUTDOORS PEAK IN.
A skylight can open up a room to more natural light, but it also allows nature to make a larger presence in your home. Skylights work in several places in a home. We recommend putting one above your bed for maximum pleasure. When it comes to skylights, we say go big or go home. During the day you’ll be welcoming sunshine and blue skies into your home, while in the evenings you can fall asleep watching the stars.
GET INSPIRED BY WHAT'S OUTSIDE.
Sometimes the best way to bring the outdoors in is to literally bring pieces of nature into your house. Find inspiration in your own backyard. Take a hike and pick up pinecones or purchase bookends made of geo
a publication of San Joaquin Magazine
rocks at the store. Sometimes the best pieces are those found around you, and they make for a good story. Next time you’re at the beach on vacation, look for seashells to place in a glass bowl on the coffee table, or bring home large leaves from a stroll in the forest that you can press into a picture frame. The same aesthetic can be achieved with flowers, perhaps even those that have a special meaning to you.
MAKE THE ART WORK FOR YOU.
Picture a large landscape photo of your favorite place resting above the couch in the living room, set in a natural wood frame. This piece can easily become the focal point of the room. Choosing a spot that brings tranquility to the home is key. Expert Tip: Don’t choose an over-sized cityscape to do the job. Instead opt for a photo that includes the same natural elements you are working into the house throughout. For example, a photo of the beach, Lake Tahoe, or even open farmland will be more cohesive. The best advice is to choose a place with a personal connection. Any interior designer can handpick pieces that will look good in a house, but only you can personalize the pieces to truly make the home décor your own.

THINK OUTSIDE OF THE LIVING ROOM.
The most popular places to embrace the outdoors are in main living spaces like the living room and kitchen. However, this trend can reach to every room in the house if done right. Take these tips and apply them to other spaces. Hallways can feature botanical prints, kitchens can be outfitted with live plants and natural wood finishes, bedrooms can utilize the same design materials, and even bathrooms can be filled with baskets of seashells, ocean prints, natural materials, and a nature-inspired color palette. Take all of the tips from this list and see how you can make them work throughout a home.
LET THE INDOORS OUT.
Let’s flip this trend upside down. After you’ve brought the outside in, try letting some of the indoors out. Think about walking through a sliding glass door onto a covered patio that could double as a second living space. Put big comfy couches on top of a weather-resistant rug, move a large table outside for lounging, and accent the space with twinkling lights overhead. The key is to make the motif inside match the backyard, and use luxury items that can withstand poor weather instead of going for specifically outdoor furniture. Expert Tip: You’ll find success in the details. Decorate your table the same way you would inside with an ornate tray or large vase. Don’t shy away from putting end tables and other finishes outdoors. You can even protect your pieces with furniture covers during rainstorms.

COLOR POP!
HOW TO EXPERTLY ADD A POP OF COLOR IN YOUR HOME DECOR BY NORA HESTON TARTE
DO go big with new furniture.
Want that pop of color to make a big splash? If you’re not afraid to commit to one bright hue, go all out by selecting dining chairs, bar stools, or an armchair in a new shade. Instead of choosing several small items to represent your pop of color, this finishes the theme with one big piece. However, you can then play off of the shade in other parts of the room. Just be careful not to go overboard.
DON’T overdo it. A neutral color palette is all the rage—have you seen Kim and Kanye’s all-white mansion?—but a complete lack of color can feel a little dull for some. A lot of people are embracing the neutrals—tans, grays, and white—and a punch of bright color may be just the pop your neutral home needs. “We usually add color either in artwork or accessories like drapery or pillows,” says Kathleen Jennison, an interior designer and owner of KTG Design Co. Not sure how to add that pop? We’ve got you covered!
DO choose colorful artwork.
Artwork is one way interior design experts like Kathleen Jennison add color to a room. If the color palette is neutral, there aren’t a lot of rules on what artwork to include. Simply choose a piece that speaks to you and introduces some new shades into the room.
DON’T date your space.
Be mindful of the colors you are bringing in. Shades like millennial pink or nautical whites and blues aren’t exactly trending right now. Instead opt for colors that feel 30
at home magazine | 2019
more modern like greens, yellows, and navy blue.
DO accessorize in color.
There are several benefits to putting that punch of color into the room’s accessories. Smaller items like throw pillows, blankets, candles, and vases can be more easily changed out later if you grow tired of a color than, say, a couch or a big chair. It’s also a good way to place bits of color here and there, and maybe introduce more than one color to the room. As long as the colors complement each other, it works well!
Don’t go color crazy. Instead of mixing several hues and picking colorful pieces to cover every inch of your space, choose a few items or colors and commit.

BENEFITS OF KEEPING FRESH FLOWERS IN YOUR SPACE BY MEGAN MEINTASIS Who said fresh flowers are only for special occasions? The many benefits associated with keeping fresh flowers in your space suggest otherwise. Got a case of the seasonal blues? It’s a proven fact that just being around fresh flowers increases one’s happiness, reduces anxiety, and promotes relaxation—making them worth every penny! They’re also a great way to add an instant pop of color and freshness to your décor.
DIY:
Make a Bouquet at Home 1. Choose flowers that haven’t fully opened up yet. Although the bigger, fuller looking blooms on display may be the ones that first catch your eye, choosing flowers that haven’t fully bloomed yet will allow you to enjoy the bouquet a few days longer than you otherwise would have.
2. Trim the ends of your flowers every time they are taken out of water. Since most cut flowers drink from the stems, it’s important to give a fresh, clean cut before putting them into the vase. Be sure to cut them at a slanted angle, so the flowers are able to suck up as much water as possible.
3. Choose a vase that fits the flowers, and then cut to a length that is proportionate to the vase’s height. Oftentimes trimming a few extra inches
32
at home magazine | 2019
off the stems of flowers will make them appear prettier and fuller. It’s a simple trick that makes a big difference!
4. Remove all of the leaves that fall below the water line from the stem. Leaves that are left to sit in water will rot, resulting in bacteria growing in the water. Keep the water clean and free of slimy green stuff, and flowers will last much longer. 5. Add a handful of ice cubes to the water in your vase. Keeping flowers in cold water causes them to open a little slower. You can also store the bouquet in the fridge if you are trying to keep it looking fresh and at it’s best for that backyard dinner party you’re hosting in a few days.

TEA
Invest in Fresh Flowers
TIME HOST HIGH TEA AT HOME BY NORA HESTON TARTE Whether you’re a tea aficionado that collects all the best tea gadgets for your personal collection, or you’re playing host to an upcoming tea party, you’re in luck! The tea craze is going strong. Stop by shops in San Joaquin County to pick up the goods you need to throw your own high tea, or satisfy your daily craving for tea with the newest tea tech.
The Perfect Pot
No tea collection is complete without a teapot to pour from. The Hidden Tea Room in Lodi stocks its shelves with gorgeous new and vintage pots curated from local antique shops, wholesale vendors, and estate sales. Get your hands on a matching set, or buy mixedmatched goods for a more whimsical table setting. “It’s fun to have the different tea sets,” says Tara Miller, tearoom manager at The Hidden Tea Room and The Hidden Tea Room Gift Shop. 34
at home magazine | 2019
Best Party Gadgets
Some tea gadgets are fun to show off. A silver or porcelain tea strainer is one option for serving tea. “For a party it’s… really fun and visually appealing,” Tara says. The strainer works by placing it over the cup to catch the loose leaves as tea is poured. Then, simply remove it from the cup to drink. Other methods include using an infuser or mesh tea sachets.
Create festive décor by adding small flower arrangements to the table or serving spaces.
Picking Teas
Loose-leaf tea is the way to go for the best flavors. Have your favorite loose-leaf teas bagged at the Hidden Tea Room Gift Shop to serve guests individually, or buy tins of loose-leaf teas inside where there are over 25 different loose leaf teas to choose from. All of the flavors offered in the tearoom are available for purchase in the gift shop.
Elevate Your Spread
No tea party is complete without a collection of petite, bite-sized sandwiches and treats. Pile a pedestal high with mini sandwiches, scones, small desserts, and more. Keep in mind that everything should be delicate—from the cutout cucumber sandwiches to the cookies. At high tea, no dish is meant to be full-size. Instead, guests enjoy several different kinds of nibbles
to satisfy their taste buds throughout the courses. An elegant pedestal allows for all of the food to be on display at once, which is fun for tabletops and could replace the need for centerpieces. DIY or have it catered. GET THE GOODS: THE HIDDEN TEA ROOM & THE HIDDEN TEA ROOM GIFT SHOP 310 N. California St., Lodi (209) 452-5366 HiddenTeaRoomLodi.com

WINE INSPIRED
EMBRACE THE REGION’S BOUNTY IN YOUR HOME DÉCOR BY NORA HESTON TARTE It all started with a dog bed. Rick Serna was walking around a craft fair with his wife when they stumbled upon a small dog bed made out of a wine barrel. They immediately thought it would be the perfect place for their Pekingese to rest, but one look at the price tag had Rick shaking his head. “I bet I could make that,” he told his wife. And he did. After finishing the piece, Rick posted a photo online, and the orders started flowing in. Three years later, the Stockton-native (who now resides in Lodi) is filling upward of 50 orders
36

during his busy months, but they aren’t just for dog beds. “I make 60 or so items,” Rick says. Through his company Lodi Barrel Designs Rick turns out just about everything you possibly could make out of a wine barrel from liquor cabinets to lazy Susans, wall clocks to wood décor. “I get inspired by just going through Pinterest,” he says. “I look for wood-made items, not necessarily wine barrels, and I try to make them out of wine barrels.” Lucky for Rick, living in Lodi not only provides a good place to get used wine barrels—he’s
recently picked up barrels from Scotto’s Wine & Cider and Jeremy Wine Company—it also provides the right kind of clientele. “[We’re in] the zinfandel capital of the world,” Rick laughs. “Everybody wants something wine inspired.” In addition to turning out multiples of his best sellers—one of which is a four-tiered succulent planter—Rick accepts custom orders, too. He’s currently working on his first bar, a time-consuming project that includes glass shelves, a space for liquor, and a designated section for wine bottles. When it comes to picking out barrels, Rick admits he’s picky.
Not just any barrel will do. Ones that have been damaged aren’t a lot of use to the craftsman because he can’t use the heads to make clocks and lazy Susans. Those with wine stains, however, sell just fine. In fact, Rick started making his lazy Susans inside-out so that the inside of the barrels with their rich, purple-red color shows through. Rick says these items sell better than the versions that display the cleaner outside of the barrels. You can find Rick and his art online or at local craft fairs and festivals. Admittedly, the annual ZinFest is a big event for the company. “This is a great area, I think, for this business,” he says. Make it look expensive: Choose finishes that look high-end. This material is made to imitate some of the more expensive stone options out there without the cost and limitations of natural stone. Go for a polished finish to elevate the look.
QUARTZITE
THE 4 STONES TO KNOW GRANITE, MARBLE, QUARTZ, & QUARTZITE—WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU BUY? BY NORA HESTON TARTE According to Geno Gonzales, vice president of operations at Marble Palace, Inc., 98 percent of San Joaquin County residents have one of four types of stone in their homes. The big players are granite, marble, quartz, and quartzite, and each one has its own perks. So how do you know which slab to put in your bathroom or kitchen? Read on. Our experts have you covered.
GRANITE
Geno calls this traditional surface the Old Faithful of stone countertops for bathrooms and kitchens (both indoor and out). “I think the biggest advantage to a granite countertop is it can be refurbished,” Geno says. That means, if you get chips or scratches on the surface, or the porous stone stains, it can be buffed out to look like new again without need for a replacement slab. That also means if it starts to look old and dingy, it can be polished to shine again. Plus, economically it’s a good pick—this stone tends to be less expensive than the others on this list, and it comes in slabs and tile. Expert Tip: If you have kids or are particularly messy in the kitchen, consider a sealant to avoid stains in the first place. “It’s classic; it’s a traditional stone,” Geno says. “It never goes out of style.” 46
at home magazine | 2019
Who should get it? Really anyone, including those who have kids or pets and need a durable stone. Make it look expensive: Upgrade to an exotic granite. It may still cost less than some of the more high-end stones, but it offers better finishes or more interesting color palettes than some of the mainstays you may see in every home.
QUARTZ
Quartz has made a name for itself in the market because of its reputation for being durable, and the finish does tend to last much longer than most. The man-made material is less expensive than its natural counterpart quartzite, but offers similar looking finishes that can mimic limestone, concrete, or marble. In addition to being more economically friendly, quartz is pretty trendy. Buyers who want to get the most bang for their buck should look for American-made products.
Quartzite is the hardest stone made by nature. It features unique patterns and movement characteristics that are formed deep in the earth, heated by nature. It is an especially expensive product that customers looking for a luxury item will go after. “Quartzite has made a big jump into the market,” says Geno. That’s because it offers buyers a high-end, glossy look without the maintenance of marble. This stone offers the natural imperfections that are skipped when making quartz, but still has a near-perfect glass finish that other stones can’t offer. “Quartzite is the only natural stone that can produce that glass-like finish,” Geno says. “It doesn’t look naturally made. It’s a unique aesthetic.” Each piece of quartzite looks different than the next, which is a huge benefit for those who want a truly unique product. Another benefit is that when it comes to the extreme hardness of the natural product, you also get durability.
Who should get it? Those who want to be ontrend and premier buyers who want a piece none of their neighbors will have. Make it look expensive: No extra work needed here! This product is a luxury item on its own.
MARBLE
Marble offers an elegant look, but some people shy away from it because it’s easier to damage, Sean Bunnel, custom division manager at Marble Palace, Inc., explains. “Marble—most people are scared of it,” he says. That being said, there are buyers who gravitate toward marble because it meets their aesthetic, and they don’t have to worry too much about damage in the kitchen. It is, however, mostly recommended in bathrooms and areas that are lightly used due to the porous nature of the stone. The other downfall is that if marble does get damaged, it can’t be refurbished the way granite can. Expert Tip: Get it if you love the look, just be careful of spills or putting items that are too hot on top of the counter. Items like counter mats and trivets will be your friends!
Who should get it? Those that are going for a luxurious look in their kitchen and bathroom but do not have young kids that may damage the surface. Make it look expensive: Keep it in good shape and this product will always look like you spent a fortune on it!
Who should get it? Anyone who likes the look of natural stone but wants a more budget friendly alternative.

At the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts in Tracy, adult-only classes are offered in both wheel throwing (pottery) and ceramics, meaning you can create custom bowls, pitchers, and other decorative items to showcase in your home. GLASS MOSAICS Create your own glass mosaics around town with KHMosaic Designs. Kristi Halva teaches groups how to make mosaic stained glass masterpieces during lengthy workshops. All of the supplies are included in the classes, which are hosted at various wineries and businesses both in and out of town. On August 17, she will be hosting a pet portrait class at the Stockton Art League. To see where Kristi will be next, follow her on Instagram or Facebook. Facebook.com/KHMosaic, @KHMosaics
DIY WALL DECOR Make wooden signs that fit your style at a Board & Brush studio. Just outside of San Joaquin County in Modesto, Board and Brush has its closest studio. Here, guests are invited to come in and craft together. During studio times, attendees are welcome to choose from any available piece they want in order to create a work of art that truly speaks to their style. In general, pieces include a wooden board decorated with paints in a variety of themes from pets to holidays. To see examples of available projects, visit the website. BoardAndBrush. com/Modesto
CANVAS PAINTINGS @ HOME You no longer have to venture into a class with strangers to sip and paint—although there’s really nothing wrong with that. But if a private party is on your mind, that’s where Kat comes in. Parties through KAT’S PAINT & WINE PARTIES include in-home painting instruction in Manteca and surrounding communities where the booker gets to choose the piece friends will create. Not inspired by anything on the website? Kat will create a custom painting for your party. Expert Tip: Follow Kat on Facebook to find locally hosted wine and paint events. Facebook.com/KatsPaintParty

HOME & GARDEN
can transform your kitchen storage space, giving it a new lease on life.
Divide your drawers
Start by putting spacers inside that messy utensil drawer. Purchase small, long plastic containers without lids and organize by utensil type. No more frantically rummaging around to find the ladle you left at the back.
De-clutter
If you haven’t used it once in the last month, store it! It’s nice to have those fancy dinner plates and extra wine glasses, but if you only use them once in a blue moon, invest in a couple of plastic storage containers that fit underneath beds or that you can stack in your garage or attic for items infrequently used. This will free up kitchen real estate that you need!
DE-CLUTTER Your KITCHEN SPACE SAVING SOLUTIONS No matter how large your kitchen is, it always seems like you’re running out of space.
Cabinets get filled to the brim with pots and pans stacked awkwardly. Your utensil drawer has everything you need… if only you could find it in the jumble. Your countertops are covered with random appliances that don’t quite fit in a cupboard. What’s a homeowner to do?! Don’t give up! We have a few space saving solutions that will take your kitchen from chaos to clean in no time!
Unclutter your counters!
Add a small shelf to your countertop to double the storage capacity. That way, the items that you really want at your fingertips are still there but will take up less overall space. You may even have room to add a small bouquet of flowers to brighten things up! Use containers for oddly shaped items 50

like cereals, flour, rice, sugar, etc. The items will last longer and you can reshape them to fit your needs! Get mason jars or plastic containers that slide neatly into your cupboards and say goodbye to shoving cardboard boxes haphazardly onto shelves. Hang pots and pans or get pan racks for your cabinet. Pots and pans are some of the biggest contributors to clutter. They just aren’t made well for stacking. Luckily, people have designed beautiful pot and racks that will make it easier (and quieter) to grab your favorite pots and pans for cooking. If you prefer to give your home a bit of a rustic appeal, install small hooks into the ceiling and hang a few pots and pans instead. Just be sure you hang them securely and to not hang too many (more than four pots suspended starts to look like a hanging mess). If your kitchen could use a facelift or an entire revamp, we highly recommend California Closets or HT Home. These experts
