DECEMBER 2010
Another dental visit? Turns out, you have better things to do with your time.
Spend your time
where you want to be...
Short on time? No problem. Technology today is changing our everyday lives. Many people, however, aren’t aware that technology is also impacting dentistry in new and exciting ways. Cutting-edge innovations in dental instruments are requiring less time in the dental chair. Trips to the dentist are becoming less and less fearful, thanks to high-technology in dentistry. Our office is making these visits even easier and more convenient with technology that repairs damaged teeth in one appointment. We are pleased to offer our patients CEREC restoration services—a superior method of creating precisely designed, color-matched and highly durable ceramic restorations. From simple fillings to full crowns to veneers, CEREC delivers the results you need in one appointment.
Get back to whatever it is you’d rather be doing.

UP FRONT
‘Twas The night before Christmas ‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the town The streets were all empty, the stores shutting down. I trudged through the streets, my head hung in despair Both my arms empty, no shopping bags hanging there. My wife would be mad, I hadn’t a doubt I had no excuses, no easy way out. In the hustle and bustle of making a living I’d forgotten entirely about the season of giving. Oh how my children would cry in dismay when they discovered no presents this Christmas day. As I plodded on through the blackening gloom trying to forestall my impending doom, a flashing in the distance caught my attention, my heart beat fast—I approached with apprehension. ‘Twas a neon sign, and it read (with some flowers): “Attention last-minute shoppers, we’re open 24 hours!” Oh how I jumped and shouted with glee, There would be Christmas after all for my family! I burst through the front doors, my gift list in hand, Pausing a moment to survey the land. The store was expansive, aisles piled high, with all sorts of goodies for my wife, children, and I. I hadn’t a moment to waste (my list was extensive), my wallet was full (this would be expensive). Three hours later, my funds were depleted, but my smile was broad, the list was completed! I had something for everyone, even for Rover, for my in-laws, and parents (who always come over). As you may guess, this story’s ending was happy but there is a moral (without sounding sappy). The message is this: To avoid any sorrow, do your shopping now, don’t wait ‘till tomorrow! Now for those who are groaning because this poem was trite, I simply must say …
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!” Happy Holidays from all of us here at San Joaquin magazine! Thank you for a wonderful 2010. See you in 2011!

Father Figure Role Model Sammy Nuñez
by Katy Berry
Matthew James photography
Sammy Nuñez has what it takes. He’s one of three people honored by the California Wellness Foundation for preventing violence and promoting peace. Nuñez created his non-profit organization, Fathers and Families of San Joaquin, to assist men of all ages in becoming “compassionate, responsible, and dedicated to their families and communities.” This October, the Foundation awarded Nuñez a Peace Prize of $25,000 for his commitment to San Joaquin. Nuñez’s desire to improve the well-being of Stockton’s families began at his daughter’s birth, 18 years ago. “I just remembered my own childhood and the void I felt, and I proclaimed that I would be a good father to her. Be the protector that I never had. Be the type of man to show her a good example.” Nuñez says he grew up in a poor neighborhood with little room for economic advancement. He was involved in gang violence as a teen, and says that without a positive father figure, or the opportunities to create a better life, joining a gang was presented to him as a viable option. ››

As far as his career goals, Nuñez hopes his recent recognition will put “invisible” cities like Stockton and Modesto on the map, and that the exposure will help his organization gain support. He hopes to initiate programs to end the cycle of generational poverty and restore hope and happiness in needy communities. Programs like the Harlem Children’s Zone in New York have been hailed for their excellent success rates, and cities like Stockton and Modesto are ideal candidates for similar programs. In the meantime, Nuñez and his staff at Fathers and Families of San Joaquin continue to work hard in moving our cities and neighborhoods forward on the path towards rehabilitation and betterment. With Nuñez’s determination and commitment to progress, it certainly seems there’s nowhere to go but up.

Nuñez is a perfect example of how troubled families and distressed communities create vulnerable youth, leading them to make unhealthy choices. Today, he says his past is a “double-edged sword,” but his painful childhood and adolescent experiences have helped him communicate with those dealing with the same issues he once overcame. “It reminds me of just how real that struggle is: to survive, to fight for freedom and equality. To struggle to find those things within a social system that at times doesn’t address the burdens in our heart.” Fathers and Families offers a range of programs like the Young Fathers Program, Gang Intervention Program, and Youth-Led Action Research, which allows Nuñez to not only work one-on-one with families, but also take his expertise onto the streets, hosting fatherhood and youth events in communities and nearby schools. The goal is to mobilize those involved to turn low-income neighborhoods into more positive and hopeful places to live. “I do believe these young men and these fathers are capable of participating in a collective kind of community building effort, and I think they’re necessary,” says Nuñez. “We need them to be able to build the community and society which is conducive to healthier outcomes for children and families.” As far as the $25,000 goes, Nuñez is hoping to invest some of it in new programs to empower the community, but also plans to share the reward with his loved-ones. “I plan to spend it on whatever makes my wife happy. This work comes at a great price, and no one shoulders that more than your spouse and your family. There are a lot of things I need to do to keep the lights on at home and at work.”

Whether your little one just discovered Alice in Wonderland for the first time or is in princess awe, one thing that never seems to go out of style is tea parties. Now, kids and parents can both enjoy tea time right on the Miracle Mile at Tots and Teapots. Owner Tracci Dare, who opened the kids and maternity boutique with accompanying tea lounge in August, says she’s always enjoyed gathering around tea, and after becoming a mom, her interest in children’s fashions piqued. Tots and Teapots was the perfect way to combine both interests. Moms and kids can shop for funky maternity and baby threads featuring designers from LA, New York, and Europe— whether you like softer, more classic baby wear, or something a bit edgier. If it’s the tea you’re interested in, call the shop to make a reservation for tea and scones at either 11 a.m. or 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. The menu features a delicious assortment of scones, quiches, tarts, and petit fours. Tots and Teapots is also a unique venue to celebrate special occasions with your kids or friends. At the princess-themed birthday tea party, little ones can dress up in princess garb complete with boas, tiaras, pearls, and gloves while enjoying special snacks like Nutella and banana finger sandwiches. For adults, the tea lounge is great for intimate bridal or baby showers. Just call at least two weeks in advance to book your event. —K.B. Ed Douglass in the santa spirit
stockton’s ed Douglass has been a professional santa Claus for almost twelve years with the naturally santa organization, embodying the qualities of Kris Kringle year-round. —Katy Berry
i heard some santas bleach their beards. Do you do anything like that to prepare? my beard is pretty much silver white and my hair is long and curly. the only thing that i do is on about the 5th of november, i’ll let one of the other santas give me a perm on my beard. i do not envy ladies who get all that stuff done, that’s something else. What happens if you get asked for an impossible gift? a kid once asked me if i could bring her grandma back who had passed away from cancer. how do you answer that? my answer was: santa’s magic is not that powerful, but she’s with you.
Keep her in your heart and she will always be here. there are no right or wrong answers if you remember one thing: you’re santa, you speak from the heart. Do you ever get older kids or adults? i had these four young ladies, probably in their thirties, and they were dressed to the nines. they came in and asked to get a picture, and i said gladly. Later, they told me they’ve kept up the tradition since high school. and every year they set all their pictures on their mantles as part of their Christmas décor. they told me they’d be lost without it. What do you do on the off season? i signed up with hospice to help with Christmas anytime for someone who isn’t going to be here in December. they had a Christmas in July for a family where the grandparent was not going to make it to Christmas. she got a Christmas tree and decorated the house. everyone came over and had a big dinner, and santa came and brought toys. and i thought, that’s something i could do; it would be hard, but i would do it in heartbeat.

We’ve heard you’re top-notch when it comes to the north Pole. What did you do to become a part of naturally santa? they basically want you to look the way i do. i represent santa 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. they don’t want anybody who is a drunk, or smokes. the lady who started this, we call her mama gooch, she went down to the local mall with her kids and stood in line, and the santa was so disappointing. so she had the idea for naturally santa.

Giving Back Saving the Holidays
by Nissa Hallquist | photos courtesy of charities
The holiday season brings to mind visions of a big meal with family around the table; bright, twinkling lights; and presents under a beautifully trimmed tree. For many, this is the heartwarming scene awaiting them this season. For others, hard times mean a very different scenario for the holidays: no presents and very little food at all, let alone a full turkey dinner with all the fixings. Here in San Joaquin, several local organizations are working to make sure that children and their families are still able to have a Happy Holiday regardless of their financial circumstances.

CHiPs for Kids
Brighter Christmas Thirty-one years ago, Gene Birk was moved to action after hearing about a family who had been burned out of their home during the holidays, losing everything. Birk and some friends collected money and other donations for the family, and the experience got him thinking about all the other families that had fallen on hard times and were facing a similarly bleak holiday. Birk established Brighter Christmas to give such families a holiday they could actually look forward to. Over the past thirty years, it has grown into a renowned organization that helps support hundreds of families in the Tracy area with food and toys they might not otherwise see for the holidays. For the acquisition of needed donations, new lead chairman Steve Abercrombie plans to stick with timetested fundraising methods. In midNovember, toy and food collection barrels will be placed at various Tracy businesses and schools. After Thanksgiving, the Angel Tree—a 6-foot tall Christmas tree bedecked
40
san joaquin magazine
with cards denoting a child’s gender and age—will be set up in the West Valley Mall for shoppers to buy a gift for a needy child. In the beginning of December, the Brighter Christmas Jail will “arrest” well-known Tracy citizens and hold them until friends and family “post bail” for their release. Throughout November and December, around 350 volunteers will gather donations from the barrels, man the Angel Tree, screen applicants, and sort and package literally tons of donated food and toys. Then, a few days before Christmas, everything donated will finally be delivered to the hundreds of families who signed up. Last year, a grand total of 870 families, including 1,910 children, received a large food basket, a turkey, and toys. Given current economic conditions, Abercrombie expects demand to be even higher this year. It will be a challenge, but one that Brighter Christmas is eager to meet head-on.
This year marks the 11th anniversary of one of the most popular holiday programs in San Joaquin and around Northern California. It’s the CHiPs for Kids Toy Drive, sponsored and run for the past decade by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and KCRA 3. It has proven to be a most successful collaboration: Last year more than 40,000 toys were collected and distributed to hospitalized and disadvantaged kids and teens throughout the KCRA 3 viewing area. What’s interesting is that it’s the kids who have actually proven the most key to the program’s enormous success. While participating area businesses are certainly essential, the biggest contributors by far are San Joaquin’s elementary, junior high, and high schools. For nearly a month between Thanksgiving and Christmas, thousands of school children are encouraged to share in the season of giving, and support their less-fortunate contemporaries—and they do so enthusiastically. This reveals a pleasant side effect of the program: the children that give appear to feel just as much joy as the children who receive. While monetary donations cannot be accepted, new, unwrapped toys are being accepted November 23 through December 20 at donation boxes at local CHP offices, businesses, and numerous schools throughout San Joaquin. After that, CHP officers collect all the toys and distribute them locally, through organizations like the UC Davis Children’s Hospital, the Salvation Army, United Way, Boys and Girls Club, and more. For more information on having your school participate in the CHiPs for Kids program, volunteering, and/or up-to-date information on area donation locations, call CHP Officer Adrian Quintero at (916) 464-2090 or visit www.kcra.com/chipsforkids.

Operation Dreamkeeper
Lodi Adopt-A-Child Back in the 1980s, Dennis Lewis was a beat cop in Lodi. It was his regular experience to see kids in poverty-ridden neighborhoods quite simply not getting a holiday. Tired of seeing this, he eventually decided to do something about it. In 1989, he made his first solicitation—of his fellow officers— and formed a committee that raised enough money to give a holiday meal and toys to a handful of children and their families. With that, Lodi Adopt-A-Child was born. (The name came from the idea of adopting a child for Christmas.) From that first year on, the organization has steadily grown, and now supports thousands during the holidays and year-round. The organization is run strictly by volunteers, privately, with no input from government or other public entities. That’s a big reason why current Lodi Adopt-AChild Board President, Jerry Glen, enjoys working with the organization. While he loves being able to help children and families in general, being able to do so without a heap of bureaucracy slowing things down is a huge bonus. Last year, the program managed to supply 1,184 children with holiday presents. Such an impressive figure was made possible by the donation of funds
42
san joaquin magazine
through organizations like the United Way and the PG&E employee donation fund, as well as soliciting individual donations of money, clothing, and toys. Anyone who agrees to make a toy donation receives an “Angel tag” to guide them in their purchase, notated with a child’s name, gender, and most wished-for present. Glen estimates that at least the same amount of children will receive gifts this year as well. He doesn’t seem too worried, though, as the generosity and support of the community has been revealed to him time and time again in both good times and bad. To find out how you can help Lodi Adopt-A-Child provide support for families, call Jerry Glen at (209) 333-1056 or visit www.adoptachild.org.
The Good Samaritan Training Center in Stockton has been keeping holiday dreams alive for less-fortunate children since 1993 through their annual Operation Dreamkeeper event. The idea was conceived by the late Robert Thurber, then a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Training Center. Having grown up in-need himself, he knew firsthand the desire to feel loved, and the importance of having at least one carefree day of pure joy and excitement. Today, an extensive network of volunteers is organized by people such as Sandy Guerrero, the newlyappointed Director, and David Cloxton, Executive Director. As enthusiastically outlined by Cloxton, the Operation Dreamkeeper holiday event involves more than just distributing toys. It also provides holiday cheer in the form of live entertainment. Before delivery of gifts begins, children are treated to a day of snacks, a puppet show, live Christmas music, visits from area sports and safety mascots, and more. In order to fund this event, Operation Dreamkeeper volunteers set out and monitor toy barrels (to collect unwrapped toys, for boys and girls age 5-10 years), and process donations received from area businesses, churches, and individuals. Every little bit helps as this year 750 children will receive tickets to the event. (Their need is based on the recommendations of community centers, Child Protective Services, churches, and welfare offices.) For Cloxton, the time and effort is well worth it. It all pays off with the smiles on children’s faces and the warm feeling he gets at being able to demonstrate the real meaning of the holiday season. If you’d like to help Operation Dreamkeeper with a donation or by volunteering, contact David Cloxton at the Good Samaritan Training Center at (209) 469-7098 [SJM]

Where the Journey to Forever Begins
Viaggio Estate &Winery by jaMiE MEnaKER | photos by MaTTHEW jaMEs
Tamara and Kent Raverty are right at home at Viaggio Estate and Winery—which makes perfect sense since they actually lived in the Viaggio mansion before opening this Wine Country gem for business. Today, Viaggio is one of the most highly-anticipated new wedding spots in Lodi Wine Country, with sweeping views of the Mokelumne River, and an on-site orchard, pool, mansion, winery, tasting room, and cottage.

The Ravertys have owned the 23-acre Viaggio property for almost eight years, where they designed their dream home from the ground up. The 10,000 square-foot ‘mansion’, as they now call it, is complete with a movieviewing room, state-of-the-art kitchen stocked with all stainless appliances, master bedroom suite downstairs, and two separate bedroom wings upstairs. The back side of the home overlooking the water boasts a wrap-around balcony, glistening pool, and attached hot tub, built to enjoy the Mokelumne River views. With such a labor of love, why would the Ravertys want to give it up? “We just saw such potential for this place,” says Tamara. “And we wanted something that could be a family business for us.” With that in mind, in September of 2009, Tamara, Kent, and their four children picked up and moved to a smaller home in Lodi Wine Country, opening up the Viaggio property for all sorts of possibilities. First order of business? To open the type of wedding venue the Ravertys were envisioning in Lodi, you must also house an on-site winery, so that’s just what they did. The winery has everything here—reds, whites, old vine
46

Zins, sparkling wines, and even dessert wine. Winery visitors can stroll the property, sit by the outdoor fire pit, or enjoy the tasting room, called ‘Vino di Vita’ or ‘Wine of Life’. The room is all hardwood and fireplaces, with the tasting bar taking up the entirety of the back wall, one of the coziest wine tasting spots we’ve seen. Visitors have also enjoyed the tasting room’s oversized, hardwood dining table surrounded by wine barrels, chandelier lighting, and leather studded chairs, perfect for an intimate dinner event; we’ve been told this is the spot for rehearsal dinners. Viaggio’s property itself is grand and lush, with foliage everywhere. Colorful flowerpots and twinkle lights draped overhead welcome visitors after passing through the Viaggio gates, emblazoned with their motto: “Where your journey to forever begins.” Continue on this cobblestone path and you’re treated to the first breathtaking glimpse of Viaggio’s plush grassy lawn and Mokelumne River beyond. For the big day, brides have their choice of wedding backdrops: the quaint walnut trees in the orchard, the sweeping marble Antebellum-style staircase, or under the large oak tree—all overlooking the water. Viaggio’s on-site
DECEMBER 2010
ballroom provides the perfect backdrop to celebrate this milestone, with endless possibilities to recreate the space however the bride chooses. The Ravertys have seen anything from sky high, fruit-filled centerpieces to an Asian-inspired wedding with paper umbrellas suspended from the woodbeamed ceilings. The Ravertys’ former home, the ‘mansion’, has now become home base for many wedding parties and their families, with plenty of room for the whole entourage to spread out. The home is also open as a vacation property, for anyone to enjoy the tranquil river setting and luxuries of mansion living. Also on-site is the River Cottage, smaller and quainter, where many a bride and groom have spent their first night of wedded bliss, awaking to the river right outside their window. “Now that we’ve come so far, this is embarrassing to say, but the first time I gave the key to someone to stay in the mansion, I may have shed a tear. That home was our baby,” says Tamara. “But now I love it. Viaggio is our baby in different sort of way. It’s so fun to see how happy people are when they’re here, and how much they enjoy it.” Viaggio has also played host to plenty of other events, upscale parties, live music nights—the Ravertys are open to anything you can imagine up. The family nature of Viaggio is what keeps this place grounded in the midst of top-notch events planned weekend after weekend, each grander than the next. Tamara and Kent are on-site daily, with their Jack Russell Terrier lovingly at their heels, getting ready for the next gathering. Their daughter, Alexa, works in the office, their family is around all the time, and the couple has been known to pour in the tasting room during the day, happy to welcome visitors.

Recycled Soy Candles TAMMY KELLEY, RUBY REVIVAL
A devotee of flea markets and antique fairs, C.R. Porter owner Tammy Kelley loves to see what can evolve from recycling and reviving what you already have. These embellished twinklers were inspired by the many sample candles that C.R. Porter burns during store hours; Kelley was left with an assortment of empty jars and ends of soy candles that she couldn’t bear to part with. Filigree Necklace CHRISTINA HALSEY,
LEXI CHRISTINE DESIGNS
Long-time Lodi teacher Christina Halsey found herself with a hankering to indulge her creative side, and we’re happy she did, because we love these sparklers. Glass crystals of different sizes and hues are artfully wrapped in brass filigree, and draped in different formations, to create a statement piece to enhance any neckline. Classic yet modern, these necklaces are versatile enough for any ensemble. ‘Lexi’ originated with Halsey’s daughter Alexis, and ‘Christine’ is her own nickname. $50, PDC the Boutique, Lodi, (209) 333-7777, www.pdctheboutique.com or www.lexichristine.com

LISA STARKEY, PDC THE BOUTIQUE
Lisa Starkey’s Lodi shop, PDC the Boutique, is filled with finds she loves so much, she just has to share—cheeky note cards, French and Italian-inspired home décor, and jewels from local artists. These books are a little different, straight from Starkey herself, who has a background in both photography and interior design. The books and brooches are vintage finds, with an eye for unique texture and color combinations. Display atop a stack of coffee table books to add a touch of vintage chic. $60-$80, PDC the

Hand-Painted Pendant CHRISTINA GOODMAN, KNOWLTON GALLERY
Artist Christina Goodman has a great eye—she has to in order to create her miniature paintings and frames. Using acrylic paints and a magnifying glass, Goodman has made an art of the small things. Inspired by Renaissance-style art and framing, her pendants are mini masterpieces, actual wearable art. The subjects differ, from nature inspirations to the European countryside, and each frame is constructed and gilded by Goodman’s hand. Look for the pieces embellished with semi-precious gems, like this pendant, with glistening green moss agate. $300, Knowlton Gallery, Lodi, (209) 368-5123, www.knowltongallery.com or www.christinagoodman.com

The Largest Selection of Whirlpool Bathtubs in a Single Showroom Anywhere in the World!
Where else can you nd what Tubz has to o er? Over the past 27 years we’ve gone from a “one man” home business to having the largest bathtub showrooms on the planet. Our Fremont facility, for example, has “hands-on / feet-in” tubs on display, over 400 including 13 models of door tubs with 3 or 4 more arriving shortly, as well as a very special new line of barrier free showers available nowhere else this side of Santa Barbara. Here’s some advice we’ve given out for decades: You wouldn’t even buy a new pair of tennis so, for goodness shoes without trying them on sake, “Come put your tootsies in our tubs”. And how about this: We have working bidet toilet seats in all three of our restrooms, plus a working “demo” out on the half acre showroom in the midst of the 20 Toto toilet “line-up.” Now, havi ng l earned al l thi s – why woul d a tub shopper go anywhere else looking for the selection, inventory, experience, opinion, and product knowledge, combined with truly competitive pricing that just doesn’t exist anywhere else?
The Naked Truth About Door Tubs
This tub is made in America.• This tub is made using • tub is manufactured by Jacuzzi. Acrylic. This This may surprise you but the VAST MAJORITY of the door tubs you’ve seen advertised are actually fabricated in, you guessed right, China, and are made using gel-coated which cannot compare with the properties of non stainable, non porous, thick, virgin, cross-linked acrylic. Once they’ve been with either a whirlpool system or an air system, they are then typically being advertised as having been “Made in America”. It is true that in the thermoforming process a sheet of acrylic gets stretched quite a bit, but the truth ought not to be.

Hearing is the sense that immediately connects us to people and the world around us. Our species was once regarded as Homo sapiens, the toolmakers, but Dr. Jane Goodall discovered that chimpanzees use tools, too, making us more accurately described as Homo sapiens, the communicators. But... what if you have a hearing loss? Improving interpersonal communication is more than buying a hearing device and sticking it in your ear. BODEGA BAY
BODEGA
Bay
An Unexpected, Uncrowded, and Unspoiled Getaway
By Don and Ann Jackson
The sleepy yet rugged Sonoma Coast provides an almost poetic counterpoint to the high energy and sometimes hectic lifestyle of San Joaquin. The town of Bodega Bay is a gem-of-a-find on this scenic stretch of California coastline. It’s a lot closer than Mendocino and there are numerous similarities, especially when it comes to scenic coastal vistas. Bodega Bay may be best known, especially by movie buffs, as the location where Alfred Hitchcock chose to film his classic thriller, The Birds. This quiet fishing town will soon celebrate 40 years since the filming, and a number of nearby locations used in the film can still be viewed.
What to do and see:
Bodega Bay doesn’t really have a downtown area to stroll, but a number of wharf and roadside areas offer enough small shops and galleries for minimalist shopping and casual walks. A different wine tasting experience awaits oenophiles at Gourmet Au Bay, serving sample wine flights on creative miniature surfboards (www.gourmetaubay.com). Whale watching, deep sea fishing, and a unique local adventure offering fishing charters for giant squid are all popular here. Calamari steak lovers should find this squid option very appealing (www.bodegabaysportfishing.com). Hiking the bluffs of Bodega Head (we saw whales within 50 feet of the cliffs), bird watching along the designated Doran Regional Park Bird Walk, and kite flying along Doran Beach are well-loved local activities. During the summer, free kite flying demonstrations are provided (www.bodegabaykites.com).

Where to stay and dine: Bodega Bay
Lodge, the only four-diamond property in the area, actually surpassed our expectations. Most rooms provide fireplaces and ocean or harbor views, and the staff was exceptionally professional and helpful. Fellow writers told us that their Duck Club is recognized as the area’s premier special occasion fine dining restaurant, and we agree. The lodge also offers a complimentary

What really made our visit to Bodega Bay exceptional was the opportunity to explore the back roads and charming communities within a few minutes drive. We spent three days in Bodega Bay, and could easily have extended our stay to see and do more in these quaint history-filled towns with funky general stores, rowdy taverns, and charming churches. Don’t miss taking the short drive north to Jenner at the mouth of the Russian River, where the rocky coastline and pristine beaches will provide one Kodak stop after another. In Freestone, visit Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary, the only spa outside of Japan offering invigorating cedar baths as well as superb massages (www. osmosis.com). Wild Flour Bread, only open a few days a week, has folks from all over the county lining up for their tempting breads and sweets—and free samples are offered (www. wildflourbread.com). Freestone Vineyards, the closest winery to Bodega Bay, offers an attractive tasting room and highly regarded wines (www.freestonevineyards.com). Bodega, a few miles from Bodega Bay, is home to photographer-favorite, the historic St. Teresa’s Church, as well as the Porter School House built in 1873, a prominent setting in The Birds, but now a private residence. Casino Bar, the local roadhouse saloon, will make you think you’re on the set of the TV show Northern Exposure (www.bodegacasinobarandgrill.com). In Valley Ford, just walk around town and soak up the rural atmosphere, and be sure to check out the historic bank building which now houses a fish market and deli. The last town, Occidental, offers the most to see and do of all the nearby towns, as well as a larger variety of restaurants and small shops. Zip line aficionados, like us, will love Occidental’s new adventure complex offering seven adrenaline-pumping zip lines zooming over the Coastal Redwood treetops (www. sonomacanopytours.com).

evening wine/cheese hour, and is an ideal choice for weddings and family reunions (www.bodegabaylodge.com). The Links at Bodega Harbour, a championship golf course next door, is perfect for golf outing getaways (www.bodegaharbourgolf.com). Other lodging choices include: The Inn at the Tides, which features great harbor views, complimentary continental breakfast, and fairly moderate prices. Their Tides Restaurant, another Birds location, across the street on the harbor side, is a casual dining spot with market-fresh seafood. And why not? The owners have their own fishing boats and processing facilities (www. innatthetides.com). Sonoma Coast Villa and Spa, in nearby Bodega, is a unique property, ideal for weddings and for those folks who want to be inland and away from the fog (www.scvilla.com). Additional dining possibilities: Rocker Oysterfeller’s at the historic Valley Ford Hotel (www.rockeroysterfellers.com); or Spud Point Crab Company, a hole-in-the-wall eatery with one of the most pleasant lunch surprises in years—their clam chowder and crab sandwiches are to-die-for, but get there early if you want to avoid a line (www. spudpointcrab.com).

Few things in life tempt the sweet tooth as much as pie-glorious-pie. Fruity, gooey, tarty, flaky, creamy, and buttery, a piping-hot slice of pie is a taste of heaven during the holidays. San Joaquin is home to scrumptious local bakeshops, and just about every type of pie you can possibly imagine, so we did a little dishin’ in search of the very best. i HOLiDaY PieS the made-from-scratch White Peach pie is the ticket. A flaky, sugar-dusted crust and sweet middle never overwhelm the flavor of the fruit, which stuffs each pie to capacity. JUst desserts: The Fruit Bowl’s namesake pie is packed with mixed fruit that fills every nook and cranny. The cookies and pastries are also recommended, as are the handmade rolls and Italian breads (we love the foccaccia). Take home an Apple Cranberry pie for the holidays.

Phillips Farm Cafe
Kandi’s Pies & Pastries
the sWeet sPot: Phillips Farm Café at Michael-David Vineyards offers old-timey character and more pies to choose from than we could possibly ever finish—but don’t let that stop you from trying. A cozy seating area is situated just steps from the winery’s market and wine tasting counter.
the sWeet sPot: All hail Her Royal Pieness! Tucked away in Tracy, Kandi’s is an extension of Mom’s kitchen (only more professional), where fresh, hand-picked ingredients are transformed into savory confections and glass-cased goodness that lures locals—10 deep during the holidays—to the counter.
taster’s ChoiCe: Super duper sweet, the Apricot pie is a crowd-pleaser. Take big bites because entire slices of the fruit come out with every fork that goes in. The moist crust does its job and fills you up without dragging you down. JUst desserts: Phillips Farm Café also offers a bounty of breakfast breads, flavored coffees, and farm-fresh edibles for the holidays. Steaming bowls of creamy soups taste great with warm buttered bread and, conveniently, a glass of wine. the sWeet LoW-doWn: By not trying to reinvent “pie” to be something it isn’t, it delivers on all that it should be. Get there: 4580 West Highway 12, Lodi, (209) 368-7384 www.lodivineyards.com/tasting.htm.
taster’s ChoiCe: While all pies will please the palate—creams, berries, and pecans, oh my!—be sure to try the Dutch Apple. Fresh Pink Lady apples, tasty tinges of cinnamon, and a crumbly, brown-sugared topping make this pie not-to-be-missed.
the Fruit Bowl the sWeet sPot: This Stockton momand-pop shop is a local favorite for an entire menu of reasons, from the Fruit Bowl’s roadside farm market to a simple but simply amazing bakeshop, heavy with aromas of spice and the promise of sugar. taster’s ChoiCe: When in season,

Carignane was the most widely planted red varietal in France, but is also grown in Italy, Spain, Algeria, and Israel. Widely planted in the new world, today, only a few of the ancient Carignane vineyards remain in California. Traditionally used as a blending grape because of its excellent yields, great acidity, and firm tannins, Van Ruiten is one of the few wineries to vinify this varietal. Van Ruiten’s 2007 Ancient Vine Carignane hails from a 98 year-old head trained vineyard, and only 100 cases were produced. Dark ruby color opens to aromas of plum, raspberry, and spice. The old vine elicits a taste of Lodi terroir, dark blackberry, and cherry flavor with a long, smooth tannin finish. Van Ruiten Family Vineyards: 340 W. TASTE OF THE SEASON CHESTNUTS By KaTY BERRY
Winter is a time for giving, spending time with loved ones, and most of all, eating. But once all the feasts and celebrations have wound down, many are left with their waistlines a few inches tighter. If you’re looking for a traditional holiday snack that won’t tip the scale post-Christmas, just think of the timeless line from Nat King Cole’s Christmas Song, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire.” Most of the chestnuts grown in America are found on the West Coast, and many in San Joaquin. Believe it or not, they used to be more widely available throughout the country, but in 1904, diseased Asian chestnut trees were planted in New York and nearly wiped out all the orchards in America. Luckily, parts of California were spared, which is why we still produce fresh chestnuts. The nuts begin falling from their trees around September, and are usually done with the harvest in October. However, fresh local chestnuts can be enjoyed in San Joaquin till mid December. Girolami Farms in Stockton harvests fresh chestnuts and is a great resource for not only buying them, but learning how to preserve, roast, peel, and prepare this mild, sweet, and tasty nut. Chestnuts are a great ingredient for soups, stuffings, or to eat by themselves, whether roasted or raw. They’re low-fat, low-calorie, have no cholesterol, and contain a substantial amount of vitamin C. But many beg the question, how do you actually roast chestnuts on an open fire?
HOW TO ROAST CHESTNUTS: If you have an open fire, great. But just in case, we’ve included instructions for roasting in an oven. -Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. -With a sharp knife, slit the chestnut, making sure to cut through the outer shell and the inner skin. Chestnuts are very moist, and without a slit to release steam they’ll pop like popcorn. -Place the nuts in a shallow pan in a single layer. -Roast them 15-25 minutes, turning the nuts about 5-10 minutes in. -Remove from the oven and let cool. -While still warm, peel back the pellicle (which will curl from the heat), and then remove the second layer of skin. Enjoy!

Thinking about stopping after the salad? Not a chance. Try the lasagna, which is superb, or any of the seafood dishes, all of which are surprisingly fresh and flavorful.

You may already have a favorite Chinese restaurant—everybody does—but if you are in the mood to venture away from habit, try Dave Wong’s. This longtime Stockton favorite serves up a pleasant combination of Chinese, Cantonese, and Szechwan eats. The broccoli beef, lemon chicken, and fried rice are hands-down favorites. The menu has many traditional dishes, alongside appetizing treats like wok-charred green beans. The muted walls and intimate (yet expandable) quiet candlelit dining chambers reiterate the fact that Dave Wong’s is not your typical Chinese restaurant. David’s New York Style Pizza 1744 W. Toppings, cheese, and dough that’s prepared fresh daily may be three of the reasons this Stockton staple has had such success that they’ve recently opened a second location in Lincoln Center. Or maybe it’s all the choices at David’s New York Style Pizza that make it so popular: Eat in or take out? Hammer Lane or Lincoln Center? Thick, thin, or standard crust? Indoors or out on the patio? One of David’s twelve specialty pizzas or one of your own creations? We know sports-lovers love the pizzeria because it combines some of their favorite things: great pizza, beer, fellow fans, and the big game televised on the many 46-inch flat screen televisions hung in both locations. Whatever their reasoning for coming back, repeat customers can be found enjoying David’s New York Style Pizza seven days a week. De Vega Brothers

At this fun restaurant, they really know how to mix it up on the grill. One of their signature dishes is the savory barbecued ribs, served as an appetizer or an entrée. The ribs, which are best paired with Bette’s world-famous pesto, are tender to the point of melting away in your mouth. It is likely visitors will find this restaurant bustling when they visit, so during peak hours, be prepared for a lengthy wait. If that doesn’t suit you, they also offer their entire menu for take-out orders, and they even offer catering.
More practical than fussy, Thai Café is the place to go when the craving for good Thai food, fast, strikes. This little place manages to stay afloat despite some stiff competition from surrounding restaurants, perhaps in part to a large following of loyal customers. Regulars rave about the Thai Chicken Salad and Salad Kai, but if you are in the mood for something a little heavier, go ahead and try the Koa Paad—deep-fried rice served with your choice of meats. The colorful Thai decorations set the mood for a fun and flavorful meal where everyone is welcome.

TRACY
The Great Plate
This downtown restaurant, open since 1975, is a classic eatery where the food is as eclectic as the diners. Mothers with their toddlers settle in next to prominent businessmen in ties for everything from a sturdy American burger to Greek souvlaki. Don’t be intimidated by the Greek side of the menu or the local luminaries—souvlaki is simply the Grecian version of shish kebab, served on pita bread, and at Yasoo Yani, everyone gets the same fine family service. Don’t even get us started on the honey-drenched baklava for dessert.
Carmen’s Casa Nachos 350 W. Grant Line Rd. (209) 835-9402 Full bar. Open for lunch and dinner. $$
Stocktonians Emily Baime and Darin Michaels have always shared a passion for great food and drink. Now, the young couple shares their love of local flavors with other San Joaquin foodies through their new cooking club, Community Tap and Table. Most of the prep work is done by Baime and Michaels before each gathering, so enthusiastic cooks can immediately focus on having fun with new techniques and ingredients. Each month a different theme is chosen for the menu, and participants work together to assemble four to five courses, learning relevant skills along the way. December’s theme is Soul Food, so attendees will learn how to properly cut an organic freerange chicken to be fried, and side dishes will include greens, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and more. When dinner is ready, Michaels pairs an American craft brew with each course, and the group discusses the pairings over their meal. Along with supporting the slow food movement, Community Tap and Table also donates any extra income to local organizations that connect the community through food. —K.B.

Want to spice up a dull week? A trip to Carmen’s Casa Nachos family Mexican restaurant should do the trick. Try Carmen’s fantastic fajitas and their specialty salsa seven days a week for lunch and dinner, where they make all their food fresh everyday. Outdoor dining and a children’s menu are available to accommodate the whole family, while their catering and banquet menus take care of all your special occasion needs. Turn up the heat at Carmen’s Casa Nachos, where it’s Siempre Caliente! Magellan’s 15 E. 6th St., (209) 839-2333, www.magellansworldcuisine.com Full bar. Open for lunch and dinner. $$$-$$$$
Magellan’s Restaurant, named after owner and Executive Chef Thomas Magellan, is much like the small, intimate restaurants found in San Francisco. Featuring American Continental cuisine, the menu choices range from duck salad to their salmon burger to the ever popular, delectable filet mignon. The menu changes seasonally and the high level of noise found in some restaurants is not to be found here. If you are looking for a good traditional meal with peaceful ambiance, seafood specials, and a martini bar to put others to shame, then Magellan’s is the place.
Tracy Thai successfully captures the unique and complex flavors Thai food is famous for. Using only fresh, quality ingredients, their food has artistic presentation and exceptional flavor, from mouth-watering appetizers like their heavenly Angel Wings (boneless chicken wings stuffed with silver noodles), to their soups served in a flaming tureen that keeps it warm throughout the meal. Tracy Thai prepares imaginative creations for those with adventurous tastes, and also familiar favorites for those who have never experienced Thai food before. 714 Central Ave., (209) 833-0862, www.thegreatplate.com Full bar. Great Plate offers two full bars and 16 beers on tap, a fine wine list, and Sunday breakfast (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and the NFL Ticket.
