Our 209 Opener is Naomi Newhouse, the head of Kaiser’s midwifery program. She was happy to chat with us about what it means to be a midwife, and how she keeps her patients and herself calm in a stressful world. We’ve also taken a look at St. Joseph Medical Center’s CareVan, their mobile clinic that treats the ill and uninsured in Stockton, and the Valley Mountain Regional Center. This non-profit organization helps children and adults with developmental delays gain the skills and services they need to live independently. Even our boutique spotlight is all about wellness—Raychel Hug-Lusk, owner of Sea Salt Cottage and a nurse at Lodi Memorial Hospital, explains the philosophy behind her all natural and therapeutically-minded shop. Of course, good food is key to happiness, so we’ve picked the Townhouse at Wine and Roses as our first food opener of 2013. Their gourmet menu and carefully chosen fresh, local ingredients prove to be good for both the body and the soul. We’ve also rounded up a couple great sweet potato recipes for you to try at home, and hope to finally lay to rest any questions about the differences between yams and sweet potatoes. (Spoiler: You’ve probably never eaten an actual yam.) Take a minute to think about what you really want to get out of this year, and if what you want has anything to do with seeing the best San Joaquin has to offer, we’re here to help. Naomi Newhouse, Chief of Midwifery for Central Valley Kaiser, sees women during what is probably the most physically and emotionally stressful point in their lives—childbirth. As a midwife, Newhouse follows each woman’s progress from their first prenatal appointment through their post-delivery release from the hospital.

“Midwifery comes from a preventative framework. It’s more of a healing framework or nursing framework where we’re looking to identify issues in a woman’s life that may cause psychological or physical stress,” Newhouse explains. This proactive philosophy means an emphasis on identifying stressors and teaching expecting mothers to take care of themselves—strategies that we can all use to bring more peace into our daily lives, whether or not we have a bun in the oven.

“Modern life is very stressful,” says Newhouse. “We’re constantly bombarded with many challenges on time, energy, and focus.” These stressors have double the impact on pregnant women, who have to handle changes in their relationships and within their bodies on top of the regular pressures from work, school, family, and finances. According to Newhouse, step one in improving her patients’ health is identifying the sources of stress. “Midwifes are more likely to ask you a question like, ‘what’s going on in your life that’s giving you headaches?” she says. She encourages patients to break down a typical day and look at the things in their lives that may be causing problems, and tackle these stressors head on. Midwifery is an old discipline, hailing back to the pre-industrial days when the town midwife was the go-to for illness, advice, and pregnancy. “[Midwifes] were the old wise ones, the community medical provider that knew everyone in town, understood what was

going on in their lives that might make them ill,” Newhouse explains. That total health philosophy is still the backbone of modern midwifery, and has come to influence the way all of Kaiser’s doctors and staff interact with their patients. “The most exciting thing is to see the midwifery model spread to doctors and see doctors take the same approach,” says Newhouse. She and her fellow midwifes encourage their patients to contact them with questions and are ready to listen to their fears and concerns. This accessibility has proven hugely successful with the women they work with, and now all Kaiser patients can access their information or contact their doctors via kp.org. “When [Kaiser] came up with the ‘Thrive’ campaign, we thought, ‘We wrote that.’ Midwifes did that first.” Still, connectivity only goes so far. Women must be willing to take care of themselves before they can really take advantage of all that Newhouse and her team have to offer. “The key piece I find as I counsel any woman who’s being pulled from all ends is to know your own spirit

or heart very well,” Newhouse advises. “Know what charges you, drains you, brings you joy, and takes your joy away.” She encourages her patients really take the time to learn how every day things make them feel, from work to family interactions to social situations, so they know how to make the changes in their lives that will keep them and their babies healthy. “If it’s hard for you to get up in the morning and go to work, I promise you, it will make you ill,” Newhouse says. Recharging your batteries is important— for Newhouse, this means calming activities in her daily routine, like morning tea and yoga, and avoiding physical stressors like caffeine and alcohol. Of course, women need to pick out the stressors from their own lives if they’re really going to keep themselves healthy and happy. “We need to asses if a woman is ready to make leaps… Then we give her the tools she need,” says Newhouse.

Some of the greatest films you’ve never heard of are coming to the heart of San Joaquin this January at the Sixth Annual San Joaquin International Film Festival. From January 4-8 the Janet Leigh Theatre at the University of the Pacific will screen recent international and independent American films that all focus on the idea of “Life on the Edge: Humans on the margin of society.” A champion for art house cinema, the San Joaquin International Film Festival offers more than the opportunity to see small titles on the big screen. As an institution that is dedicated to promoting world culture in our community, founder and director Sophoan Sorn passionately believes in the importance of enriching our local community with awareness of the world we live in. Sorn applies his belief that “the more we know, the more well-rounded we are” by bringing us some of the most culturally important films of the past year. If you ever wanted to find a place where you could purchase oneof-a-kind gifts and wellness products in one visit, look no further because this shop is calling you.    Raychel D. Hug-Lusk, owner and founder of Sea Salt Cottage, opened the shop on May 1, 2010. Hug-Lusk decided to open Sea Salt Cottage’s doors in Lodi because she had been a long-time resident of the community after moving there at age 13. “Lodi is all about community and this is where my home is,” says Hug-Lusk. “Where else would you want your business besides where your friends and family are?”    Hug-Lusk, who is also a full-time registered nurse at Lodi Memorial Hospital, has used her career background to influence the types of products she carries in her shop. “I love being a nurse and helping people,” says Hug-Lusk. “If you don’t have the mentality to help people, you shouldn’t be a nurse.”    Sea Salt Cottage carries many wellness products such as therapeutic grade oils that promote balance and relaxation. All of the products carried in Sea Salt Cottage are made in the United States and are one hundred percent organic. “I just had the desire to offer something unique and different,” says Hug-Lusk.    Many California artists from San Francisco to Taylorsville have their work

carried in Sea Salt Cottage. Whether it’s handmade goods, scarves, or jewelry, Sea Salt Cottage has something for every one of its customers that walk through the doors. “The most common comment we get is that we are very unique and carry a little bit of everything,” says Hug-Lusk. One of the primary focuses for the shop is sea salt itself. Sea salt from different regions of the world, such as Portugal and Santa Barbara, are featured. The sea salts offered can cater to almost every type of use including cooking, bathing, and eating. Customers also have the opportunity to create their own custom sea salt mixtures in store. For most, the fevers and runny noses brought on by cold and flu season mean dosing up on DayQuil and, if things get rough, a trip to the doctor for antibiotics or extra strength medications to kick whatever bug they’re fighting. Without proper care, what seems like a simple cold or flu can progress into respiratory ailments like bronchitis or pneumonia. But for those without health insurance, a trip to the doctor is a huge and often unaffordable expense, and even treating minor ailments carries a hefty price tag. However, St. Joseph’s CareVan seeks to put medical care within everyone’s reach. “One of our goals is to serve the underserved and uninsured,” says Pat Collier, director of St. Joseph’s Community Health Department. The CareVan travels around Stockton, stopping at the fairgrounds every Thursday

and various schools, churches, or even grocery stores twice a week—as long as the parking lot is big enough to accommodate the forty-eight foot clinic on wheels. At each stop, anyone over the age of sixteen is welcome to take advantage of the services of the doctors or nurse practitioners on board to treat what ails them. “We don’t aim to be a person’s medical provider. We want to treat whatever condition they’re coming in with, then get them connected with a primary care provider or clinic, something where they can have routine care,” Collier explains. In addition to treating immediate medical needs, the CareVan also offers regular screening clinics for blood pressure and diabetes. Those who find out their blood sugar is above normal levels will be

There is the oft-cited statistic that one in 88 children in the United States will be identified with autism spectrum disorder, but CDC reports show that it’s not just neurological disorders like autism, but a variety of developmental delays and that are being diagnosed with a higher frequency. If you don’t already know someone with autism or an intellectual disability (the new legal term for mental retardation thanks to Rosa’s Law, passed in 2010), the numbers suggest that you will in the near future. However, the increase in diagnoses has been matched by an increase in awareness, and programs like Valley Mountain Regional Center have made great strides in helping clients and their families reclaim their confidence and independence. VMRC serves a little over eleven thousand people in San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Amador, Tuolome, and Calaveras counties, with the majority of their clients in San Joaquin. They offer their services to children and adults with a wide range of delays and disabilities, from

their early start programs for kids aged zero to three to their employment assistance for teenagers and adults. Following a review and assessment by doctors, social workers, and psychiatrists, VMRC staff meets with families and clients to see exactly what services will be most beneficial. “First we see if they have a place to live... Then we look at what kind of training needs we have. If they’re interested in working, we help them find work. If they’re not interested or can’t find a job, we start them in a day school program... There are a variety of other services depending on what the person needs,” explains Paul Billodeau, executive director of VMRC. For the children VMRC serves, aid often comes in the form of helping parents learn the laws and what’s available to them, and facilitating communication between families and schools. “Try not to be afraid of the system,” Billodeau advises parents facing autism or intellectual disability diagnoses. “You can get a lot of services and a lot of resources.” Coordinators and educational specialists are available to attend meetings with parents, and work hand-in-hand with

school staff to meet the needs of the child. As adulthood approaches, the focus shifts to learning the skills that will help earn employment. “We really try to emphasize work as their primary goal,” says Billodeau. VMRC helps their clients utilize the skills they’ve learned in Workability programs or in school to find jobs in the community, or even start their own “microbusinesses” based in their strengths and interests. Though VMRC runs on state and federally allocated funding, they accept donations to the James R. Popplewell fund to assist families in ways their regulated spending doesn’t allow, like buying graduation outfits for students and making sure necessities like PG&E are paid.

Stockton Municipal Baths in 1920s

Prior to the building of the Hotel Stockton in 1909, the site was home to Stockton’s first baths, known as the Weber Baths. Built in 1883, they were the predecessor to the most famous of the baths, The Jackson Baths were built in 1893 at what is now McKinley Park.    The Jackson Baths utilized three wells that fed into one large pool, as well as several smaller pools. The site was much more than baths and pools, it was a resort. There were family areas with picnic spots and even a small zoo. Parks containing swings and slides surrounded the pools, along with 150 dressing rooms. The grounds boasted a club house that was utilized for many events, including musical concerts. They even offered intimate bath houses for private parties and a scenic railroad ride.    The location of the baths coincided with several of the streetcar lines of early Stockton, which made them accessible for many citizens to enjoy.    In the 1920s, the baths underwent a drastic renovation and were renamed the Stockton Mineral Baths. The improvements included extensive expansion on the pool which eventually became the largest in the world. The pool consisted of a central circular design with two wings branching off. Renowned architect Glenn

Allen was even called on to design a four story light house and two Venetian bridges on each side of the circular pool. The renovation also added sandy beaches and wading pools for children to play in. It is quite easy to see why the Mineral Baths quickly became the most popular attraction of Stockton.    The baths were made possible by the plentiful wells of natural gas which allowed for a consistent flow of warm water. Additionally, the gas expelled many minerals including but not limited to iron, sulfur, magnesium, and salt. Many deemed the combination as having therapeutic properties.    The supply of natural gas was discovered very early in Stockton’s history as the byproduct of digging wells. Instead of water, gas was discovered.    Advertisements about the baths boasted tmedical benefits like hair, scalp, and body improvements, as well as internal benefits. Although unspecific in the internal benefits one must assume the relaxing waters were exemplary at dissipating stress.    Most likely due to the expansion of the pools in the 1920s, the wells began running dry in the 1940s and closed. The structures built by Allen were subsequently torn down in the 1950s and replaced with a newer swimming pool.

Pink October’s Survivor Fashion Show October 15, Lodi

Every year, Pink October invites breast cancer survivors, friend and families of survivors, and anyone who wants to help raise funds and awareness in the fight against this disease to participate in a night of gourmet food, fine local wines, and of course, fashion. This Wine and Roses-hosted event helps raise funds for the Geweke Caring for Women Foundation, an organization that has been helping women diagnosed with breast cancer take care of themselves and their families since its founding in 2006. The foundation partners with local treatment facilities, including the Ben Schaffer Cancer Institute, St. Joseph’s Medical Center, and Delta Sierra Hematology and Oncology, as well as the American Cancer Society, to find patients who need a little extra financial support for things like utility bills, mortgage payments, and medication costs. The money raised by this event will help the Geweke Caring for Women Foundation continue to reach women in need.

Have fun. You’re more likely to stick with exercise if you don’t view it as a grueling form of punishment. Listen to music while out jogging or watch your favorite TV show when you’re on the treadmill. Have a repertoire of different exercises you can do each day to keep from getting bored.

Bootcamp group training. Many people are intimidated to go to the gym by themselves and don’t know where to start. Coming to Bootcamp, they see people there of all ages, levels and abilities. Improve your mobility. One of the best things you can do to improve your overall fitness is to get mobile. Too many people hit the gym looking to get stronger or be able to go longer, but if you are not mobile and flexible you set yourself up for the inevitable bump in the road. Workout at work. If you have a desk job, you can periodically (and discretely) move and keep yourself loose by doing knee raises paired with rotating ankles, rolling your neck, and clenching your behind. Use your chair’s swivel and twist from sideto-side to work your core.

View the world as your gym. There are opportunities for healthy physical exertion wherever you look. So take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park in a spot further away from the mall entrance. Walk up and down every aisle of the grocery store.

Make up your mind and just do it. Your degree of “success” with your exercise goal will be determined by how you handle the barriers that prevent you from exercising. Work, family commitments, weather, fatigue, stress, etc. can all be used as a reason (excuse) to not exercise, or another reason to exercise. Skilled Nursing Facility, Rehabilitation Facility, Convalescent Hospital, Long Term Care Facility, Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility, Post-Acute Care, Extended Care, Health Care Center, Nursing Home. Believe it or not, these are all different names for the same level of care. It can be confusing to say the least.   Skilled Nursing can include many things depending on the focus of the facility. The requirement is that 24 hours of nursing care is provided. This includes a nursing staff of Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). There are state and federal requirements for staffing that must be followed based on the facility’s number of beds. Facilities generally do not employ physicians so the residents can continue to use their own physician to manage their care. There is not a physician in the facility 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The RNs and LVNs are in contact with each physician via phone and/or fax.    Most Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) get the majority of their patients from an acute hospital; however, patients can come from home too. A nursing home provides the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital.

The majority of SNFs provide rehabilitation services such as Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy. Each admission is evaluated by an inter-disciplinary team and goals are set. Some residents may be there for 30 days or less, others for longer periods. Some residents may be able to go back home independently while others may need assistance such as Home Health visits in order to go home. Some may need to consider going to an Assisted Living Facility because they cannot live alone. Still others may require long term care.   The label “Nursing Home” has negative connotations for many people, yet nursing homes/snf’s provide an important component of senior housing options. It’s important to separate nursing home myth from fact. There are many caring people who work in SNFs and they provide wonderful care to the residents. Making the decision to move a loved one into a SNF is rarely an easy decision. He or she may not want to go, but they simply aren’t safe living at home any longer.

In addition there are a variety of programs to meet the social and spiritual needs of their patients. If you have the time, visit a few Skilled Nursing Facilities so that you will be more informed and have peace of mind knowing you have made the best decision for your loved one.

When choosing a facility, it’s always good to visit first. Consider what services are needed and seek out those facilities that provide them. For instance, not all facilities take dementia/ Alzheimer’s residents who may be at risk for leaving the facility. Is the facility experienced in JANUARY 2013

An island of many moods enveloped in clouds of mist and effusions of easy and immediate cheer, Kauai, the most verdant of all the Hawaiian Islands, has mostly avoided the infestations of tiki-tacky tourism synonymous with its more crowded siblings. While travelers can still find statuettes of be-bopping hula girls for the dash, most come to this moony Pacific islet for a more authentic island experience—or experiences, rather—found on all of its four distinctively different, but equally spectacular, shores. ITINERARY 1: THE NORTH SHORE Eden on the Garden Island, the North Shore is hammock country—an otherworldly outpost known for its unhurried surf alcoves, golden beaches, and rustic wilds marked by spidery trees, spiny overgrowth, and shimmering jewel-toned seas. Not many places this idyllic (at dusk, the backdrop recalls colonial Southeast Asia) can also claim hippie cred, but that’s the charm. SPLURGE: Shop and dine in Hanalei. Stand in line at Wishing Well Shave Ice (look for the colorful van and the beach bums) and order minty Mojitos at Barracuda. Hop a catamaran headed for the Na Pali Coast (the best are not usually advertised, so ask a local for the most reputable) or pilot a kayak to this rugged coastline to explore otherwise inaccessible sea caves. SSSH: Queen’s Bath, a large lava-rockprotected swimming hole, is a Kauai can’t miss—and you will if you’re not paying attention. Located in Princeville (at the end of Punahele Rd.), the trails of locals will lead the way.

ITINIERARY 2: THE EASTSIDE Even Kauai’s centrally located “Coconut Coast” hub is low-key. By urban-dwelling standards the traffic is next to nothing, but to locals, it may as well by 5 p.m. on the Bay Bridge. This stretch boasts plenty of economical lodgings, plus bustling shorelines and shops. STAY: Although the Eastside’s most famous resort—the iconic Coco Palms (of Blue Hawaii fame)—is now shuttered, Kauai Sands Hotel in Wailua offers a similar throwback vibe and a better beachfront address. kauaisandshotel.com SHOESTRING: Tear into a juicy cheeseburger at Duane’s Ono Char-Burger. Paddleboard the Wailua River, hike the trail to the

Sleeping Giant (but not if you’re short on stamina), or trek through the Fern Grotto. Cycle along Kealia Beach, or get a traditional Lomilomi massage at Angeline’s Mu’olaulani. And don’t forget to stop for retro knick-knacks at the Tin Can Mailman. SPLURGE: Spring for fresh sushi at Kintaro and a join an off-road caravan to big-screen Kauai, a surprisingly good behind-thescenes film tour. (Look out for Pirates of the Caribbean.) SSSH: Whoa, who invited the monks? It’s an improbable find, but Kauai’s Hindu Monastery is absolutely magical. Occupying 458 acres, this spiritual center boasts gorgeous temples and lush, upland rainforest. (No one knows it’s here, either.)

The CCC carrot soup is an example. A half-portion cup features a yellow-orange concoction of carrots, coconut, and curry in a deft combination that touches the tongue with the clean taste of the main ingredient followed by a smooth and fresh curry—the way curry should be. Coconut is an accent. Eat it slowly lest you miss the interplay of flavors. A classic Lyonnais salad features slices of perfectly sautéed fingerling potatoes and a poached egg over frisée lettuce. The surprise? A second, darker frisée lettuce lends an unexpected and delightful sweetness to the dish. Chef Gerbi found it at a nearby farm in Lathrop.    Chef Gerbi’s crew calls him an ‘intellectual chef,’ according to Munson. Don’t mistake him for serious, however. His conversation is laced with humor and a love for surprising his diners. This winter he may add a Caesar salad to Towne House menu, but don’t expect croutons. Instead he plans a riff featuring grated beets marinated in orange and cumin resting on a romaine leaf and garnished with fresh Parmesan shavings. Perhaps a white anchovy on the side? “You have something that, in my head, can work,” he says.   It looks like Munson has some more tasting in her future.

For Munson, the commitment to Lodi and local farms is obvious in her every word. She’s proud to say investors in the hotel, spa, and restaurant are Lodi folk. She shares stories of seeking ingredients from local farmers and wine makers. She’s thrilled she and Chef Gerbi have recently discovered a new farming company willing to work with them on providing local ingredients for new dishes.   For Chef Gerbi, creating menus that change seasonally and sometimes even monthly is culinary playtime—very, very thoughtful playtime. He grew up in his family’s kitchen in France, where he later got a degree in science and worked as a pastry chef before opening his own restaurant. Don’t expect too much béarnaise from this French chef, however. “I hate this thing,” he says of the heavy sauce. “I’m not very ‘French cooking.’”   Instead, Chef Gerbi traces his roots to the Mediterranean seaside— a place where the menu follows the season and honors local ingredients. He has brought the same philosophy to Wine & Roses since taking over the kitchen in 2009. “When you close your eyes, you know where you’re at,” he says. And when you open them you will see a plate that reflects the season. Fall foods have fall colors —reds, oranges, browns. Chef Gerbi says he uses those colors to paint a picture on the plate. His food is deconstructionist without the hipster pretense. A steak with bleu cheese comes with the cheese placed on the side so diners can decide just how much to mix the flavors. Gerbi’s dishes tend to be clean and simple, with a twist. “With three colors you can paint whatever you want,” Chef Gerbi says. “We try to reduce to the main flavors.”

Lodi’s King of Portuguese Grapes BY RANDY CAPAROSO

This month's picks from the Lodi Wine and Visitor Center

When tasting the 2009 Alta Mesa Lodi Verdelho in San Francisco last year, Andrea Immer Robinson (a Master of Wine and author of multiple wine books) could not stop talking about the “silky dryness and perky tartness” of this uniquely scented (think lime, lemon verbena, and white peach skin), dry, and bracing white wine. Robinson also noted flavors of “marzipan and almonds in the finish as you exhale,” adding that “it makes you crave a Barcelona style spinach salad, laden with pine nuts and raisins.” Wow – who wouldn’t want some of that? But what is Verdelho, and why are we talking about it? In her Guide to Wine Grapes, Jancis Robinson MW writes that Verdelho is “most closely associated with the fortified wines of Madeira,” although it has done “notably well in hotter regions of Western Australia.” She’ll have to revise that book, of course, to mention winegrower Ron Silva’s magnificent obsession with the grape in Lodi. “I was inspired to plant Verdelho,” says the diminutive Mr. Silva, also the proprietor of the boutique-sized Alta Mesa Cellars, “after visiting Ilha do Pico (the “island of Pico”) in the Portuguese Azores in 1997. I was in Pico to see where my grandfather was born, and came across a sign that said ‘Zone of the Verdelho.’ There I found plantings of an indigenous clone of the Verdelho grape, planted in fields surrounded by a rat’s maze of black volcanic walls, built everywhere on the island to protect the vines and fig trees from the winds whipped up by the Atlantic Ocean.” At that time, Silva was just beginning to expand his vineyard in Lodi’s Alta Mesa AVA, located just east of Highway 99 between Galt and Elk Grove. “It was quite a chore,” says Silva, “because there’s only about twentyseven inches of loose, gravelly topsoil in Alta Mesa, and after that you hit about nine inches of hard packed sandstone. But beneath that was some beautiful, blonde colored loamy soil that hadn’t seen the light of day in over a million years, along with lots of extremely pure groundwater. So we had to rip through the sandstone layer seven feet down to get to it. But just look at the vines and you can see why it was worth the trouble— they’re growing beautifully, and have produced some outrageously good fruit.” Altogether Silva’s Silvaspoons Vineyards (named by his wife Kat because just about everything Ron touches seems to turn out well) totals 300 acres; twelve of those acres devoted to Verdelho, plus twenty other

grapes such as Zinfandel and Petite Sirah (Michael David-Winery is a big buyer), the rarely seen Torrontés (closely associated with Chile, but producing absolutely luscious, spicy, musk scented grapes in Silvaspoons), and a full complement of black skinned grapes that originated in Portugal’s Douro River Valley, which Silva likes to sell as field mixes to winery clients producing sweet, fortified Port style reds (from varieties like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, and Tinto Cão). While Zinfandel and Petite Sirah pay the bills, it’s the Portuguese grapes that are nearest to Ron and Kat’s hearts because of their heritage. “My grandfather came to California in the first wave of Portuguese immigrants just after 1910,” says Ron. “Although my dad grew up in Hayward, he didn’t learn how to speak English until he got to grammar school. My wife’s family first went from Portugal to Maui, which is where she was born, and we met in San Leandro, after their sugar cane contracts in Hawai`i were up. “When you stand in Silvaspoons you can see what brought us here thirty-six years ago – the same reasons why many Portuguese families came to Galt before us, primarily to raise dairy cattle.” Silva still keeps about 300 head of beef, which furnishes excellent compost to compliment their Lodi Rules certified sustainable farming. Continues Silva, “Alta Mesa is virtually identical to Alentejo, east of Lisbon— the same gravelly soil and Mediterranean weather, the same dry summers and cold winters, and cool breezes at the end of each day, ours coming off the Delta rather than the Atlantic.” At sunset we sit on the shaded concrete crush pad alongside Silva’s tiny winery, as unostentatious as the man himself, and gaze westward at a golden horizon from where a late afternoon breeze has begun to cool our skins. Silva opens a bottle of his 2008 Alta Mesa Lodi Tannat; the Tannat, a Southern French grape notorious for its black color and relentless tannins. Silva’s Tannat is suitably dark and impenetrable, and the nose jam packed with sweet, luscious blueberry/ boysenberryish fruit, with undertones of thick, beefy consommé. On the palate, the wine is dense, tight as a banker’s fist, with exotic, rambunctious flavors flying like Chinese daggers. The hefty red wine makes our thoughts turn carnivorous: a hunger for smoky barbecued beef short ribs, or else extremely rare prime rib slathered in raw, tingling horseradish. “You’ll have to come back for a full blown Portuguese style dinner,” says Silva. With that, he sits back, cradling his glass, with wine stained lips forming into a visibly contented smile beneath a wild, wintry gray beard.

For those not interested in wine tasting, Jessie’s Grove also offers other activities such as beautiful backgrounds for photographs, outdoor picnic tables and a museum. “It’s a very warm atmosphere,” said Chadwell. “It has a rustic, special and cozy feeling.” Jessie’s Grove hosts numerous events each year including fundraisers and wine club dinners. Six shows featuring local bands take place during the summer concert series in June through August. Patrons also enjoy food, wine, a free breakfast, and a chance to camp out at the winery in their own tent or RVs for only $25 per ticket. “We’re a laid back winery and are very relaxed,” said Chadwell. “It’s a big old party on the weekends.”   Most recently, Jessie’s Grove opened a second wine tasting room in downtown Lodi which is open on afternoons Fridays and Saturdays. The grand opening took place on November 10 and included barrel tastings, tours, and raffles. “We wanted to become part of the downtown community,” said Chadwell. “Lots of wineries are popping up there.” The downtown location is in a building that is over one hundred years old and used to be home to the old ice house cellars, keeping the history Jessie’s Grove values intact. “We tried to keep the rustic feel out there,” said Chadwell. “It has the same values, different building.”   Jessie’s Grove is a place that offers something for everyone. The ranch is full of history itself as it is surrounded by the first vines Spenker planted in 1888 as well as the home he and his family resided in. The original vines are still producing grapes today and are an essential part of the winery.   Spenker moved to Stockton in 1868 and married Anna Schileman in 1870. The couple had two children, named Jessie and Otto. In 1906, Spenker built a home for his children to grow up in on the ranch. The grove was named after Spenker’s daughter Jessie because she refused to change the area in the 1940s and 1950s. Today, Jessie’s Grove remains a familyowned business being passed on from generation to generation over the years.   Greg Burns, a fifth generation family member, currently owns Jessie’s Grove with his wife Suzanne. Wanda Bechthold, Spenker’s great granddaughter, also is frequently at the winery telling stories to patrons and providing historical photographs of Jessie’s Grove over the last hundred years. “What makes Jessie’s Grove unique is our history, how long we’ve been a part of Lodi and how much we’ve grown in the area,” said Courtney Chadwell, Jessie’s Grove event coordinator and tasting room manager.

SWEET POTATOES

For those of you still confused by the differences between yams and sweet potatoes, here’s what you need to know about these two very different root vegetables: Both the bright orange and yellow-fleshed potatoes we find in grocery stores are actually sweet potatoes, despite the tendency to label the orange variety as “yams”. True yams are grown in Africa and Asia, and aren’t so easy to find in the states. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, are native to Central and South America, and have been grown by Native Americans for centuries. In fact, sweet potatoes were among the treasures Columbus brought back after his first trip to the New World, and were an instant hit in Spain, England, and France. Today, sweet potatoes are grown around the world, and thrive here in the San Joaquin Valley. Crops are planted in late spring and harvested during early fall, just in time to grace your table at

Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Both orange and yellow sweet potatoes pack more nutrients than yams, and are rich with Vitamins A, C, and B6, plus essential nutrients like potassium and copper. Thanks to this vitamin and mineral combo and their high fiber, low fat content, it’s more and more common to see sweet potatoes as a substitute for the typical spud, and dishes like sweet potato fries and salted sweet potato chips are popping up in more restaurants and grocery stores. Surprisingly, sweet potatoes have a lower glycemic index than starchy white potatoes, which makes them friendly to sugar-sensitive diabetic diets. So, whether you like their natural sweetness or prefer a savory spin on sweet potato dishes, stock up on this healthy and delicious tuber, and experiment with some recipes that don’t involve marshmallows and maple syrup. Smoky Sweet Potato Burgers with Roasted Garlic Cream & Avocado (4 Burgers) 2 cups coarsely mashed sweet potatoes (or yams), about 2 large potatoes 2 bulbs of roasted garlic 1 cup cannellini beans (rinsed and drained if canned) 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/3 cup panko bread crumbs 1/3 cup oat flour (or all-purpose, wheat, etc) 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1/8 teaspoon cumin 2-3 tablespoons olive oil 1 avocado, sliced 2/3 cup plain Greek yogurt or sour cream 1 teaspoon maple syrup extra salt and pepper for seasoning yogurt/cream 4 whole wheat buns To roast garlic, see this tutorial. I like to roast a few bulbs at once (like 4-5) to have for the week. Pierce potatoes (I used 2 large) all over with a fork and place on a paper towel, setting in the microwave. Microwave for 5 minutes, then flip and cook for 5 minutes more. Remove, slice in half and let cool until you can scoop out the flesh. In a large bowl, coarsely mash beans with a fork. Add in sweet potato and mash together, then add in spices, salt and pepper, minced garlic, egg, panko and flour. Mix together until combined, then

place bowl in the fridge for 15-20 minutes. This helps form them into patties, but as a warning they are still somewhat messy. While mixture is chilling, combine yogurt/sour cream with 2 bulbs (squeezed out) of roasted garlic cloves, maple syrup and a sprinkle of salt and pepper in a blender or food processor. Process until smooth then set aside until ready to use. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons olive oil. Remove mixture from fridge and form into 4 equal patties, then place in the skillet once hot. Since

the mixture can be wet and messy, do not move until they are fully cooked and golden on one side! This takes about 5-6 minutes. Then, add more oil if needed (this really helps cook them) and flip burgers very gently. Cook for another 5-6 minutes. Toast buns if desired. Assemble by topping burgers with roasted garlic cream and avocado!

Cinnamon Sugar Hasselback Sweet Potatoes with Oatmeal Cookie Crumble 4 large sweet potatoes · 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened ·1 tablespoons brown sugar · 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt · oatmeal crumble · 2/3 cups old fashioned rolled oats · 2/3 cups brown sugar · 2 tablespoons flour 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon · 1/4 teaspoon salt · 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a small bowl, combine butter with sugar, cinnamon and salt, combining well until thoroughly mixed. Place butter on a sheet of plastic wrap and form it into a small rectangle or square. Place in the freezer for 20-30 minutes, until firm. Very carefully (and um, patiently) slice the sweet potatoes every 1/8 to 1/4 inch and only 3/4 of the way down the potato. I found it helpful to slice the potatoes halfway down the whole way across, then once that was done carefully use a smaller pairing knife and slice deeper until you almost reach the bottom. Remove the butter from the freezer and slice very, very thin pieces, then cut those in half. Ideally you want about 24-30 small, thin pats of butter. Gently pull apart the sweet potatoes and place a butter pat in every three or four slices. Sprinkle potatoes with additional cinnamon if desired and place in a baking dish so they sit upright. To make the crumble, combine the sugar, oats, cinnamon and salt and mix well. Using your hands, crumble in the butter and mix until the entire thing is moistened and comes together. Place an equal amount of crumble on top of each potato, pressing firmly but gently. Bake for 30-35 minutes, then cover the potatoes with foil and bake for another 20-25 minutes.
