TIPS AND TRENDS

compiled by Jenn Thornton

Cue the singing angels! The tastemakers at Anthropologie have unveiled BHLDN, a newly launched line of ethereal bridal wear for modern brides with vintage tastes. Boho-chic party frocks and heirloom inspired gowns are staples of this curated collection that also features jewelry, headpieces, footwear, and delicates. Guest designers such as Fleur Wood and Tracy Reese have also been tapped to create original looks for the artisan brand, featuring built-in boning, corsets, and quality textiles in a variety of figure-flattering silhouettes. Look for a complementary collection of upscale DIY decorations and inspired extras—think candelabras and glassware—to premiere later this year. www.bhldn.com

THAT’S MONEY

The latest win-win on the wedding front is Deposit a Gift, an online cash-only registry that’s ushered in a flexible new era of no-hassle gift giving. Betrothed couples set up a safe, online account into which guests deposit monetary contributions to fund unconventional gifts—college, a first home, a dream experience. What’s more, Deposit a Gift also serves as a hub for the Big Day, where couples can set up their own command center to upload photos and videos, create a personal event website, and share details with family and friends. www.DepositaGift.com

VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING

“Happily Ever After” begins with Type A planning. Thanks to a well of online resources for the DIY wedding coordinators, nailing down the who-what-wed (with sanity intact) has never been easier. Here, a few of our favorite virtual conspirators. ACCESSORIES For dramatic wed carpet entrances, we love the flirty birdcage veils from Designs by Portobello (portobellojewelry.com), and bedecked hair jewels from Lo Boheme (loboheme.com).

ENTERTAINMENT Say cheese to Smilebooth (smilebooth.com), a retro rentable with personalized backdrops.

PAPERIE Custom letterpress invites on heavy stock from Pressroom & Company (pressroomandco.com) are just your type.

FAVORS Confectioners Delysia Chocolatier (delysia.com) and Totally Chocolate (totallychocolate.com) are among the latest purveyors to mold the aphrodisiac into custom creations such as monogrammed chocolate menus.

REGISTRY Compile a wish list of oneof-a-kind finds from around the world at Merci Registry (merciregistry.com).

DECOR Shop Luna Bazaar (lunabazaar.com) for posh paper accents like parasols and paper lanterns, or score custom Mexican FOOD Forego the traditional “sitwedding banners at Mexican Sugar down” and hire San Francisco-based Skull (mexicansugarskull.com). mobile bistro Spencer On-the-Go (spenceronthego.com) for fine French takeaway served from a converted taco truck. 14

Bride-to-Be

bookshelf

compiled by JENN THORNTON Signature Sasha: Magnificent Weddings by Design by Sasha Souza

Spotlighting sensational weddings teetering at over-the-top (table aflame, anyone?), this gorgeous coffee-table book provides plenty of visual inspiration. Author, designer, and event planner Sasha Souza approaches the usual wedding topics with unconventional thinking (we love her insights on “color couture” and “inspiration boards”). The result is a wedding resource that, while sumptuous on nearly every page, gives incredibly astute advice about executing the details.

COURTESY BOOK PUBLISHERS

Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair by Pablo Neruda

This poetic ode to love and longing contains verse after verse of passion-igniting prose from Noble Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda. Scandalous upon its release in the 1920s, this classic work remains unabashed with passion, romance, and oceanic imagery. Equal in desire is Neruda’s The Captain’s Verses. Together these classic companions make for a wonderful honeymoon send-off or a thoughtful wedding present.

Preston Bailey Celebrations by Preston Bailey

This is the latest opus from Preston Bailey, a premier style-maker whose artsy party installations are legendary—bright pops of color, splashes of glam, and dramatic backdrops. Although completely unrealistic for the average couple, clever brides-tobe will find lower-maintenance ways to incorporate Bailey’s ideas into their own wedding. Stunning visuals aside, Bailey also creatively addresses planning concerns.

Wedding Guestbooks by Rag & Bone

Rag and Bone’s collection of fanciful yet refined wedding and bridal shower guestbooks has introduced heirloom bindery for the next-generation wedding. These modern tokens open and lie flat for seamless inscription, and boast 100 percent acidfree ivory paper. Blank pages or signature lines for lengthy wish-youwells are available, and custom calligraphy is optional. We also love Rag and Bone’s “12 Wishes For Your Marriage” keepsake—perfect for bride-and-groom gift exchanges. www.RagandBoneBindery.com

I do OVER Renewing your wedding vows by Jenn Thornton

Still crazy for each other after all these years? Re-experience the romance in a reaffirmation ceremony. But before you retake the plunge, consider the vow factors. Who renews? Anyone can be a second-time celebrant, but most commonly those commemorating a milestone year or anniversary. Contemporary motivations to re-tie the knot vary—from having a budget that allows for more elaborate nuptials than at City Hall, to enjoying a smoother, all-around go (who knew it would rain and the first Big Day would turn out to be a Big Disaster!). Regardless of the reasons, the priority of a vow renewal ceremony—and how it differs from a first wedding—is its focus on the deeply personal. Less attention is paid to the externals (flowers, dress, DJ), and more is funneled into honoring the reaffirmation.

Should I set up a guest registry? Renewing vows is not the time to upgrade, so resist the urge to use the event as an opportunity to replace those cracked wine goblets and that barely functioning toaster oven. Registering for gifts—particularly if Crate and Barrel was cleaned out in your honor the first time around—is just plain tacky. But it is the time to be charitable. So, if guests ask to bring a gift (and only if they ask), let them know that their presence is your present, but if they’d like, you would be honored for them to donate to X and Y charity in your name.

Who hosts? Because a vow renewal ceremony typically occurs well into an established marriage, it’s not realistic to expect anyone else—especially the folks (don’t cringe, it happens)—to foot the bill. It is not uncommon, however, for children of the couple to offer to fund the event. In this case, depending on the circumstances, it is appropriate to accept. Who’s in the wedding party? Most vow renewal ceremonies forego standard attendants. Many couples prefer to walk hand-in-hand down the aisle, or have their children escort them.

30

San Joaquin Weddings

I

Covering San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties

How soon after the first ceremony is it appropriate to renew vows? There is no hard and fast rule here, but unless you are Seal and Heidi Klum, who renew their vows annually in a fabulous locale with a star-studded guest list and an endless reserve of cash to spend, most couples wait for a milestone year. The most common exception to this is elopers, who may want to organize a special ceremony for friends and family soon after they return. Are renewal vows the same as traditional vows? They can be the same, but it is more customary for couples to pen their own vows to mark the evolution in the relationship and infuse the ceremony with a personal touch. This can also include readings from family, serenades from friends, and the exchange of new, special reaffirmation bands. Is there a reception? A post-celebration is the norm, but the majority of couples elect to fete in an intimate capacity. Champagne barbecues and gourmet family-style potlucks are popular, as are larger shindigs with the works—cake, dancing, original guest list. Whatever you do, don’t skimp on memories—hire a photog to capture keepsakes to later pass down to those who mean the most.

Big Sur Highway 1

From Monterey to Morro Bay—a romantic road trip down California’s Highway 1 by Jennifer Thornton After a courtship marked by a series of dramatic events and preceded by an agonizing 12-year separation, my first love, Mike, who I met 22 years earlier at age 15 and have loved my entire life, takes a knee atop a craggy cliff in Big Sur and pulls out a ring. He proposes on his birthday because, he says, I am his gift. It’s at this moment that I know for certain he is the only person with whom I can, and will, spend my life. Naturally, when it came down to planning our wedding, we returned to the first scene of our second act, and set off on a coastal road trip to find the perfect beginning to our Happily Ever After.

Carmel by the Sea

DAY ONE: MONTEREY TO CARMEL Tidepooling in flip-flops is my idea, and I’m quick to take full responsibility for what turns out to be a rather unfortunate decision—“disastrous” if you ask my fiancé, who nimbly navigates Monterey’s famed shallows like Jacques Cousteau while I nurse my battered feet on the rocks, soaking up the sun like a seal and laughing hysterically. I love this: Watching Mike gamely execute my ill-conceived plans long after I’ve ditched them. It has become a trademark of our relationship. “Hey, that’s love,” he explains, shrugging his shoulders and showing me the underside of an unwitting starfish. A few hours and at least one hundred sea urchin pokes later, like clockwork Mike starts to freckle, signaling that it’s time to pack up for shadier lands. We find them in nearby Pacific Grove, which we happened upon by accident on our last trip, when out of nowhere Mike proclaimed that our romantic “chi” required rebooting after throngs of tourists flooding Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row had zapped us of our “mojo.” Never without a compass or a map (in this case, one of many fold-out jobs he keeps stashed in his glove compartment—“real men read maps,” he reminds me), Mike navigates us into one of the last enclaves of Main Street Americana. Indeed, Pacific Grove beckons with dollhouse architecture, historic landmarks, sand and cypresses, delicious edibles, and a colorful kingdom of Monarch butterflies.

Despite plans to window shop at the intersection of Lighthouse and Forest Avenues, we are sidetracked by the prospect of strolling the surf at Alisomar State Beach, where, like kids, we play King of the Mountain on the sand dunes (a beachcomber from way back, I win). We also skip out on visiting Point Pinos Lighthouse, and instead grab take-away tuna melts from the Pinos Grill and watch the world go by— first on the beach, and then from the car as it meanders along 17-Mile Drive, which connects sleepy Pacific Grove with deeppocketed Carmel.

Carmel by the Sea

Because this storied gateway is especially curvaceous and the vistas are step-onyour-brakes stunning, the speed limit is set at an understandable 25 mph. Personally, this fast-laner was thankful for the slower pace, mostly because it helped quell the nerves of my nervous fiancé, who was making every effort to avoid cyclists weaving in and out of traffic. It is near sunset when we arrive in Carmel— to many, the crown jewel of coastal California. While charmed by the stone chimneys and gabled roofs of the cottages here, it is a stopover for most people on their way to more affordable locales. Alas, Carmel did not make our list of ceremonial possibles, but because I love its incredible restos (shout out to Mundaka) and Mike will stay anywhere that Clint Eastwood once mayored, we ambled through town, picked up a bottle of wine, and did our best to sidestep the town’s influx of canines. (Here, the four-legged enjoy Elvis-like devotion.) sanjoaquinbride.com

This exercise so exhausted us that we headed for the Santa Lucia Mountains where, at Carmel Valley Ranch, we were greeted with calmer respite: s’mores by firelight and lights-out slumber. I wake to a game plan that a rejuvenated Mike—infused with the zeal of a mad scientist—has devised and thrusts at me along with a piping-hot cup of espresso. He’s ready to steam for Big Sur and has smartly provided me with the caffeine incentive to get on board. So, after a quick tour of the Ranch’s wedding facilities—the floral gardens and expanses of green make it our frontrunner—it’s to Sur, with love.

By noon we are in Big Sur, a colony of bohemia that for the most part refuses to embrace Wi-Fi. Our state-of-mind immediately switches gears as we pull into Nepenthe for lunch. I love this clifftop outpost, not particularly for the food, which is good not great (the Ambrosia burger is always a pretty safe bet), but because it was once owned by Hollywood lovers Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth. Mike is good at buttering me up, and I wonder over lunch what else he has up his sleeve. I quickly learn that it isn’t the usual: Trekking to Pfeiffer Falls and beachcombing at Andrew Molera State Park. (Normally I’m pretty good at predicting his moves, this time Mike succeeds in thwarting me.) It’s around now that the wind picks up and nearly sends me off the cliff upon which we’re standing, but, ironically, it takes the good news to really blow me away. Mike has planned a day of pampering at the nearby Ventana Inn and Spa, where we will also stay for the night. I indulge in an El Sur Grande Hot Stone massage, and Mike submits to a Jade Grounding Foot Treatment. After our individual spa therapies we meet up in the Japanese hot bath, check to see if anyone is

lurking about (coast was clear), and steal a few kisses. Big Sur is a place for abandon, after all. To further rekindle the fires—by now well stoked—my genius fiancé takes me to dinner at Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn, where we first celebrated our engagement. Within earshot of waves cresting against rocks and mere steps from the steep cliffs overlooking shimmering blue seas, we enjoy a heavenly dinner at the inn’s cozy Euro-inspired restaurant and decide that we could get married right there, right then, in that very spot. The same is true for Ventana Inn and Spa where, later—buttered up and liquored up—we hunker down by the fire and drift off to sleep amid sage-scented redwoods.

DESTINATION

“I DO’S”

Japanese Hot Bath at Ventana Inn and Spa

Because even Happily Ever After begins with a plan, the following destination wedding tips will put you eight steps closer to the altar. BUDGET REALISTICALLY: Know exactly what you have to spend, and what your guests can afford. Marrying abroad is not always the least expensive option, so monetary considerations must be a given, after which a nonnegotiable guest list should be compiled.

CONSIDER CUSTOMS: Not every country recognizes civil ceremonies, for example, and only permits couples to marry on certain days, so do your homework. DON’T PROCRASTINATE: A far-flung wedding requires time management. Translating and processing required documents takes time in other countries, so don’t wait to get started. POST THE DETAILS: Design a simple website with wedding details, required paperwork, and links to travel deals for guests. UPDATE DOCUMENTATION: Be aware of a country’s passport laws, and make sure that wedding guests have plenty of time to update their paperwork if necessary. ARRIVE EARLY: Don’t leave anything to chance, and we’re not talking about jet lag either. Land at your wedding locale at least two days before the wedding to finalize any lingering details. GET A WRITTEN RECORD: Make sure that you have a written confirmation of all agreements prior to payment.

snapping photos—or, as Mike describes the journey, a “stop every five seconds.” For us this is no exaggeration, and after touring Hearst Castle and dinner in San Simeon, we roll into Morro Bay just before at dusk. My childhood home for a few years, Morro Bay has definitely changed, but one thing that hasn’t is Morro Rock, a gigantic mound of granite that juts out of the sea and serves as a landmark for runners who use it to measure their distance. Neither one of us felt like strapping on our running shoes, so I introduced Mike to a favorite local pastime—collecting sand dollars and playfully whipping strands of seaweed at unsuspecting beachcombers.

Covering San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties

Ironically, here on the very same beach where years earlier I played a game called “bride and groom” with a neighborhood chum, Mike and I now debated our ceremonial options—an endless list. Somewhere between discussing logistics—what if the fog rolls in, how about if the wind kicks up—Mike, ever the navigator, retook the wheel, reminding me that true and lasting commitment is a journey that is taken together.

MABEL & MICHAEL

England November 6, 2010 Saint Ignatius Church, Antioch “We were both fresh out of high school when we met,” says Mabel. “We’d ask each other, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ We always wanted to fulfill those goals, so we waited until we were ready before we got married.” Six years later, Michael and Mabel tied the knot, combining Mabel’s Latin heritage with traditional wedding activities. The champagne toast was followed by a tequila toast, conducted in Spanish by the father-of-the-bride with monogrammed shot glasses given as favors. Guests also performed a traditional Latin snake dance. “We stood on chairs and made an arch while everyone ran under us. Then they grabbed Michael and tossed him in the air a couple times. The goal is to have fun and not fall, but some people do,” laughs Mabel. The couple also had a cocktail bar where the libations were aptly named “Something Old” (Jack Daniels and coke), “Something New” (lemon-drop martini), “Something Borrowed” (the Purple Hooter from Hooters Restaurant), and “Something Blue” (a blue Hawaiian). When the day was done, the couple agreed it was a success. “It was just amazing. We couldn’t have asked for a better wedding. We were so happy.”

KRISTINA & JUSTIN

Creel

April 16, 2011 Wine and Roses, Lodi    When you realize you’ve found your one true love, it just may be the happiest day of your life. So why not propose at the Happiest Place on Earth? That’s what Justin did when he asked Kristina to marry him at Disneyland. The couple sat for a cartoonist who had secretly agreed to add one special touch to their portrait. When the drawing was finally revealed, Justin’s cartoon asked—in a word bubble of course—“Will You Marry Me?”    The year and a half-long engagement gave the couple plenty of time to plan the perfect wedding. Since both the bride and groom are Dutch, Kristina made sure there were plenty of tulips, and she even created a pair of bedazzled wooden shoes to put on display. As an ode to their magical engagement, the cake table displayed Mickey and Minnie bridal hats, and even the bride and groom cake topper was sporting mouse ears. Kristina says her favorite memory of the day was Justin’s toast. “It actually made me cry. It was very touching. He thanked my parents and told me how beautiful he thought I was. He couldn’t stop smiling while he spoke to me.”

REBEKAH & DREW

Enloe

September 25, 2010 Westside Assembly, Lodi    Rebekah and Drew met at church, where both her mother and his grandfather were pastors. The two eventually dated for over a year until Rebekah’s birthday, when Drew popped the question at her favorite restaurant with all their friends and family present.    “Everybody knew about it except for me,” says Rebekah. “My grandmother almost gave it away; she came in and grabbed my hand because she thought it had already happened. But I had no clue.” The couple finally wed on September 25 in the church that brought them together. Rebekah says one of the best parts of the day was that her cousin, who was serving in the Armed Forces in Korea, was able to be there. “Two weeks before the wedding she got notice that she was able to come,” says Rebekah. “She didn’t try on her bridesmaid dress till the day of the wedding. It was crazy, but I was so glad she came. We’ve been close all our lives.” As for the nuptials, Rebekah says she and her beau weren’t nervous, just excited to finally take the plunge. They only wish their perfect day hadn’t flown by so fast.

KRISTEN & NICHOLAS

Perez

September 26, 2010 Viaggio Estate & Winery, Acampo Kristen met Nicholas at one of his annual slip-and-slide summer parties, and it was love at first sight. Four years later, Nicholas decided he didn’t want Kristen to “slip” away, and proposed after taking Kristen for a horsedrawn carriage ride around Lake Tahoe. As a teacher, Kristen was used to planning ahead, so wedding plans were a breeze. The couple used guava-colored accents and a colorful mix of pink, orange, purple, and green flowers for their decor. The warm weather and bright colors of the September wedding made guests feel like it was still summer vacation. Many guests complimented a table displaying the wedding photos of the couple’s parents and grandparents. Kristen and Nicholas also chose to forego wedding favors and make donations to the Mary Graham Children’s Shelter Foundation instead. After the celebration was over, the couple headed to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for a relaxing honeymoon. Looking back on the day, Kristen says it was more than she had hoped for, and offers this piece of advice to future brides: “Enjoy the day, because it goes by so fast. Before you know it, it’s over.”

LAUREN & DAVID

Flores

August 21, 2010 Viaggio Estate & Winery, Acampo Lauren and David met through mutual friends; a simple enough story, but there was a catch. Lauren lived in California, and David in Washington. That didn’t stop the two from following their hearts. “We didn’t take for granted the time that we did have,” says Lauren. The two made the distance work, eventually moving in together. On the morning of their housewarming party, David proposed. When it came to wedding plans, the couple’s main priority was for their guests to have fun. They hired a band to get the crowd dancing, but the biggest hit was the photo booth. “We still have people tell us it was one of the most fun weddings they’ve been to,” says Lauren. The couple also fondly recalls their “first look” photo session, where they saw each other for the first time. “It took some of the stress off, and getting to see his face when he saw me in my dress was pretty neat.” Lauren says her advice to future brides is to not sweat the small stuff. “The most important part of the day is the marriage. Things will keep happening and changing and it’s easy to get stressed, but try not to. Enjoy the moment.”

JACLYN & ANDREW

Long

September 25, 2010 Brookside Golf and Country Club, Stockton

Jaclyn and Andrew dated for six years before finally tying the knot, so when the time came they were ready. The couple planned a beautiful ceremony, choosing a simple, elegant black and white color scheme to reflect their own easy-going nature as a couple. Another meaningful touch was choosing the wedding date to coincide with the birthday of Jaclyn’s father, who had passed away. The wedding was a subtly sweet tribute to him, and donations to hospice were made in lieu of typical wedding favors.    The rest of the day went flawlessly, as guests enjoyed succulent filet mignon, and took in the beautiful décor, full of white roses. “Lisa Fairchild with Blossoms did my flowers, and everything she put together was amazing. When we walked in to Brookside, I started crying because it was very special,” says Jaclyn. Another favorite memory was during the ceremony, when the pastor revealed questions and answers the couple had written about each other. “It was funny because our responses were different, but the same in the sense of how we felt. That was touching and emotional for us.”

GRACE & DAVID

Jones

April 29, 2011 Wine & Roses, Lodi Grace and David met at the Joshua Wilderness Institute in 2006, where they spent the year getting to know each other before officially becoming a couple. Several years later, David made a promise to Grace, though for a moment, it didn’t seem he’d keep it. “He told me that he would propose by the end of the year, but it came to New Year’s Eve, and I didn’t think he was going to do it,” she says. That evening, David took his soon-to-be fiancée for a walk at the Brentwood Country Club where he got on his knee and proposed in front of a fountain after the couple tossed a penny in for good luck. The twosome had a romantic candle-lit ceremony at Wine and Roses in Lodi, and continued the celebration there as guests danced and took pictures in a photo booth. Grace says planning the wedding was stressful, but fun. “My favorite part was when David and I would pick stuff out together, like going cake tasting and taking dance lessons. He was definitely involved with helping me. He might not have wanted to, but he did it for me.”

SOPHIA & ROCKY

Cordle

December 31, 2010 Morris Chapel, Stockton    Sophia and Rocky were high school sweethearts—until they lost touch for fifteen years. Eventually curiosity got the best of Rocky, who reached out through the internet and found Sophia once again. “They say as you get older your opinions and views change, but we just melted together,” says Sophia. “It was almost like no time had ever passed between us.” The two instantly fell back in love, and it was only six months later that Rocky proposed to Sophia in front of her whole family at a Fourth of July picnic.    For the wedding, the couple made sure the DJ played all the nineties hits from their high school days. But of all the details, the date was the most meaningful. “We were talking about how lucky we were to have had a second opportunity to find each other and to find love,” says Sophia. “He said, wouldn’t it be neat to get married on New Year’s Eve? It would be like a fresh start every year, for us to look back and reflect on how we’ve grown together and to start anew.” So Rocky and Sophia rang in the New Year with wedding bells, and made their biggest resolutions yet—for better or for worse.

MELISSA & MICHAEL

Curry

April 23, 2010 Viaggio Estate and Winery, Lodi Michael and Melissa haven’t been apart since 2006 when they were high school sweethearts. At the tender age of 20, Michael knew he had met his match and proposed to Melissa, then 19. The two planned their wedding over the course of two years, and advise all couples to follow their lead and use a wedding coordinator. “Don’t get stressed out,” says Melissa. “It’s more fun when you’re relaxed about it.” The couple settled on a color scheme of garnet, black, and ivory to evoke drama and romance, while the bride showed her love of sparkle by using crystal accents wherever she could, including the table cloths, champagne glasses, and wedding gown. Despite some pre-wedding jitters, (Melissa says she was nervous about tripping down the aisle), the couple had a beautiful day at the Viaggio Winery. Their favorite memory was sharing a list of reasons why they loved each other. The lists had been written previously and kept secret till the ceremony. When finally revealed, Michael and Melissa found that their number one reason was the same: they were best friends.

SHERMEEN & RAZA

Malik

July 3, 2010 The Lexington Plaza Waterfront Hotel, Stockton

Shermeen and Raza had been dating for six months when Raza invited Shermeen (then living in LA) to San Francisco for his Christmas work party. When Shermeen arrived at the airport, she was told that Raza had gotten a flat tire and she would be picked up by his friend instead. “I thought we were going straight to the hotel for the party,” says Shermeen. “Then in the middle of an intersection, he said, ‘This is your stop, get out.’ I said, ‘Are you joking?’ I had no idea where we were!” Soon Shermeen recognized the restaurant where she and Raza first met. She walked in and waiters ushered her to a private room filled with candles and rose petals. It turned out there was no Christmas party, just a proposal.     The couple planned a traditional Pakistani celebration spanning three days. “I think the first day was the most fun and exciting since it was more relaxed,” says Shermeen. She was decorated with Henna designs and watched both families battle it out on the dance floor. But even more memorable for the couple was their chance to reunite with friends and family who traveled from all over the world to celebrate.

wedding planning, so consult with an outside party to evaluate the situation and advise you how to facilitate a mutually respectful conversation from a non-defensive “I feel” position—meaning, don’t get accusatory and refuse to acknowledge your friend’s point of view as equally you do your own. Remember, a wedding is one day, friendship is forever. Q: I am marrying someone outside my faith—how can I honor my fiancé and the beliefs of his family without compromising my own? A: These days, interfaith marriages are more common and accepted than ever before. There are many ways to integrate differing spiritual traditions. Seek the advice of a spiritual counselor. Head off potential issues or hurt feelings before the big day by addressing the issue with both families well in advance (ask your spiritual advisor to facilitate a dialogue if need be). While it is appropriate to listen and be sensitive to the feeling of all parties, it is ultimately you and your fiancé’s decision how faith will play a role in your wedding.

WEDDING

ETIQUETTE

Q&A

TAKE MY ADVICE… Brides solve some of your most pressing wedding conundrums by Jenn Thornton

Q: I don’t get along with my fiancé’s sister—is making her a bridesmaid obligatory? A: In this case it’s best to keep sight of the big picture. Being a bridesmaid is a one-time role, but being warmly received by your fiancé’s family is long-term, so put aside your ego for harmony’s sake and assign your future sister-in-law bridesmaid duty. While you are under no obligation to do so, the gesture will go a long way towards establishing good will within the family, reaffirm for your fiancé why exactly he is marrying you, and may even help provide a starting point to facilitate a better relationship his sister. Q: How do my friend and I maintain peace over competing wedding plans? A: Communicate respectfully—Bride Wars is just a movie. It is common for brides-to-be to become fixated and rigid during 74

San Joaquin Weddings

I

Covering San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties

Q: My fiancé’s family is far more affluent than mine. How should wedding costs be handled? A: The division of wedding costs is far less traditional than it used to be—today an equal split is customary. Determine which aspects of the wedding your families feel most strongly about (maybe it is renting the church or buying the gown), and divvy up fiscal responsibilities based on those conclusions. Q: I am planning a destination wedding. Is it inappropriate to set up a gift registry too? A: It is easy to become so swept up in the details that you forget to focus on what is most importance—the presence of wedding guests, especially at a faraway locale, is the present. The etiquette set still considers publicizing gift registry information on a formal invite tacky, and prefers that it be passed by word of mouth or a website. If approached about gift giving personally, by all means, divulge the 411, but do so gently, especially in these economic times. Q: In the interest of cutting costs, is it okay to distribute invites over Facebook? A: There is no denying that social media has and continues to affect the way we communicate. That said, resist the urge to send out wedding invitations via Facebook or save-the-dates via Twitter. Advocates of social media will play up the practical, but rarely does practicality play a role in a romantic wedding. And, believe it or not, some older guests still do not have nor do they want a Facebook page. Plus, we’re not talking about a last-minute kegger but a wedding, so cut back in other places and start stuffing those envelopes—it’s just more appropriate, period.

CAKE

BRIDAL RESOURCES

An ideal wedding cake should hit the sweet spot. To find the object of your confection, keep the following factors in mind. • BAKERY: Before settling on a particular cake maker, shop around. Find a baker who is open to your vision, and has the skills and experience to execute it.

• MAKE IT YOURS: A cake should complement your individual aisle style and your wedding’s theme, color, and attire. It should also reflect the couple it celebrates, so use monograms, bridal gown accents (think lace and ribbon), or another unique touch to personalize it.

Ask questions, sample the goods, and be open to other ideas. • CONSIDER THE LOGISTICS: It’s okay to be sweet on style as long as you’ve thought about the nuts and bolts of cake-making.
