Another dental visit? Turns out, you have better things to do with your time. Actual Client

Spend your time where you want to be... Short on time? No problem. Technology today is changing our everyday lives. Many people, however, aren’t aware that technology is also impacting dentistry in new and exciting ways. Cutting-edge innovations in dental instruments are requiring less time in the dental chair. Trips to the dentist are becoming less and less fearful, thanks to high-technology in dentistry. Our office is making these visits even easier and more convenient with technology that repairs damaged teeth in one appointment. We are pleased to offer our patients CEREC restoration services—a superior method of creating precisely designed, color-matched and highly durable ceramic restorations. From simple fillings to full crowns to veneers, CEREC delivers the results you need in one appointment.

Get back to whatever it is you’d rather be doing. 8

Design is not just how it looks and feels. Design is how it works.

“No publication is a staple of life. It’s not bread and water. You have to make it noteworthy in people’s minds and even in their hands as they’re holding it.” - Timothy White

Save the Date: Our Big Best Secret Is Out. Mark your calendars for Thursday July 14th because we have something sweet in store for you. To celebrate our 10th Annual Best of Edition, we’re going to showcase the very best of what the San Joaquin area has to offer. We believe this calls for serious celebration, and will be pulling all the bells and whistles. We all love a good party, and similar to my other outlooks on life—I say do it big or don’t do it at all. This don’t-miss event will be held at Viaggio Estate and Winery. Enjoy fantastic food, wine, specialty cocktails, music, dancing, and amazing raffle prizes in support of a good cause… . stay posted as we unveil the details next month, and of course, don’t forget to vote for your favorites via our 10th annual Best of Ballot, available at SJmag.com. We want to hear from you, our devote readers; to honor the very best this community has to offer. For those who remember our event at Viaggio a few years back, we attracted over one thousand people who all had a fantastic time. This year, we’re going bigger and better. I know our winters are mild, and it does bring joy knowing that I’ll never have to dig my car out of four feet of snow—but after awhile the gray skies start to get to me. This last weekend my family and I relaxed on the grass in our backyard just soaking up the rays. Chilling and relaxing is a rare state for me. After all, I am a project guy that likes to go, go, go. I find great pleasure in all my projects from work to family to yardwork. You learn something new, you hone your talents and you spend time with your kids—sometimes against their will—to help install the new gates in the backyard, build something in the garage… and the list goes on. I always look forward to our annual How To Guide for this very reason. As it grows, so does my list of things to accomplish. I like to know how things work. While working on this year’s guide my staff and I were able to learn many tools, from dental health and air conditioning to banking and bathroom remodels. I think that will be next weekend’s project…

So Let’s get This Party Started!

Thanks for reading. Tony Zoccoli, Publisher/Editor 22

LAST THOUGHTS Did you notice…

Our new layout design. Switching things up and adding fresh and new ways to present our magazine to our readers is an ever-evolving process. We’ve added new categories to further spotlight the people of our community. Have a PASSION? Know of LOCAL TALENT? Send a quick note to our Managing Editor! Email her at Lindsey@ SJMag.com I can’t wait for…

BaconFest at Dell’Osso Family Farm June 18-19. It’s great watching this local, family-owned business boom as their location is a big part of my family’s most cherished memories. It’s pretty cool this is planned for Father’s Day weekend, because there is no other way I’d like to spend the holiday. Bacon, beer, and Guy Fieri— count us in! You may not know…

Our staff is small, but their heart and passion is huge. We have a handful of people designing, writing, photographing, and brainstorming for our family of magazines. These dedicated artists are true experts of their craft if they can keep up with me!

CULTURED KINDNESS STOCKTON NATIVE RULES ORI TAHITI NUI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DANCE COMPETITION

BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Melanie Marie Amen

Ori Tahiti Nui World Championship Photo Dan Hood

“Tahitian legends share stories that teach positivity and hit close to home,” says Stockton native Melanie Marie Amen, in regards to her life-long involvement in Tahitian culture. “My siblings and I were born into it.” Melanie’s mother, Yolanda, fell in love with all things Tahitian in high school. Today, she has inspired not only her five children, but the community of Stockton through their family operated Tamari’i Mata’irea Polynesian Dance Group. The group is open to all ages and skill sets, and works to bring a positive outlet to Stockton youth.

As Melanie explains, it’s common for teenagers to have mixed priorities, but “when they come to dance they see happiness doesn’t come from materialist things—you can do things that make you happy.” And at just 19 years old, this Delta College student walks her talk…. Or should I say dance?    Melanie first visited Tahiti at 10 years old. “It changed me,” she says as she reminisces about the community’s generosity, kindness, and acceptance. “They had nearly nothing, yet they wanted to give us everything.” Four visits later in November 2015, Melanie found herself back in Tahiti to compete in the three-day Ori Tahiti Nui World Championship Dance Competition after being awarded a ticket for winning first place overall in the female division of San Jose Tahiti Fete.    “It’s more than just dancing, you are telling a story,” Melanie explains. The story she told in Tahiti was that of Hotu Hiva—a young woman who had escaped an arranged marriage by hiding in a drum and traveling the ocean. When she arrived to an island, she was rejected by the people and forced to dance for their God. Her dance was so beautiful that their God took human form and married the young woman.   With support from Lorenzo of Grands Ballets Tahiti Gbt and choreography coaching from Tiare Trompette, the director of her favorite group Hei Tahiti, Melanie honed the spirit of Hotu Hiva and prepared for competition.   Melanie’s expression of Hotu Hiva was so stunning she took First Place Overall among over 200 women from Tahiti, Mex-

ico, Japan, France, and the U.S. As this was the very first World Championship of it’s kind, Melanie couldn’t feel more humbled. “I couldn’t believe that they called my name,” she says. “I am just so grateful for the experience… not even for the title—just to be able to dance with all those girls, to do what we love.”   “My mom and dad have always taught me to be thankful for what God has given me,” she says. And together the Amen family spread their gratuity not only throughout San Joaquin with their dance group, but throughout the world, with their non-profit organization Mata’irea Polynesian Culture Preservation which gives back to the Tahitian people through educational supplies, sports, and other endeavors. Though the Amen fam-

ily comes from an African American and Filipino background, they strive to spread, share, and preserve the Tahitian culture, which they so dearly cherish. And to that, Melanie says, “I am just so attached. My whole world revolves around it.”

FRANKIE the FIREBIRD

STOCKTON HEAT’S MASCOT SPREADS HIS WINGS

BY COPPER WILLIAMS

Our new entourage of incredible players aren’t the only ones leaving scorch marks across the arena. Frankie the Firebird is here to add a little more fuel to the flames burning in our hockey-loving hearts!

FILL in the BLANKS…

1 2 3 4 5 30

My advice to the fans is to… Keep bringing the energy. Every voice is important. Our team thrives off of your energy. It motivates us and gives us a reason to perform at our best. If I could do any trick in the book, it would be… To fly down from the catwalk above the ice. My favorite event so far is… The Paint the Ice event. I enjoyed watching the imagination of our fans unfold in front of me with their creations.

DID YOU EVER SEE ICE BEFORE VISITING STOCKTON ARENA?

Indeed! I left Calgary in the summer, so there wasn’t ice or snow. I haven’t seen snow yet, but I think the ice at Stockton Arena is pretty great.

SO FAR, WHAT’S BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PLAY OF THE SEASON?

Derek Grant’s second goal against San Jose! He split the defense and put the puck to the top of the net, where “Mama hides the cookies” as Brandon Kisker, our broadcaster, likes to say!

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO SKATE, FRANKIE?

Of course I do! But I’m currently in the market for a new pair of skates. It’s hard to find a pair that are my size!

WHAT SIZE SHOE DO YOU WEAR?

I think my shoe size is approximately half of my wingspan. I’m not sure of the exact number, but it’s safe to say that my shoes are extra-large!

WHO’S YOUR FAVORITE MASCOT BUDDY FROM THE AHL?

My best mascot friends are Splash (Stockton Ports) and Dinger (Sacramento River Cats). Out of all the mascots in the AHL, the only one I’ve met so far has been Colonel Claude from Bakersfield, which is unfortunate because...

WHO IS YOUR ULTIMATE NEMESIS?

Colonel Claude is my ultimate nemesis! Stockton and Bakersfield have been rivals for many years and now that the teams are owned by Calgary and Edmonton, who have a deep-rooted rivalry in the NHL, the animosity is much worse!

Seeing GREEN 

BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Green hued beverages are all the rage on St. Patrick’s Day. From apple tinis to Midori sours, you can count on colorful cocktails to keep you seeing green March 17. Stop in to your local watering hole and flash your I.D. for one of these bright concoctions. At Finnegan’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, the green beer (Coors Light with food coloring) will be flowing as patrons pile in to get plowed off kegs of the dyed beverage, but beer isn’t the only option for those who want to sip in style. Tokyo tea (on the menu year round) is an alternative to the more popular Long Island ice tea. It packs the same punch with just a few small tweaks to the recipe. Vodka, gin, rum, and triple sec create the base, but lemon, lime, and melon liqueur give this drink its green glow. Served over ice and finished with a lime. 6002 Pacific Ave., Stockton (209) 951-4782 It’s perfectly appropriate to down a Guinness (or two) at Ollie’s Pub, especially on St. Patrick’s Day, but that’s not the only drink that fits the holiday bill. The golfer is served at bars across America, and each location has its own variation. At Ollie’s this green-tinged beverage is made with vodka and 7-Up and finished with a splash of tonic and sweet and sour. Your bar mates will be green with envy. 22 N. School St., Lodi (209) 333-9933, OlliesPubLodi.com 32

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

The Golfer at Ollie's Pub

More than just Irish pubs will be frequented on March 17. The bartenders at French 25, which serves French Quarter-inspired cuisine, know how to mixup a mean green cocktail, too. The Decatur gator is a pale green potion created with Three Olives citrus vodka, Dekuyper Island blue pucker, crème de banana, passion fruit puree, and alligator-green liqueur. Finished with fresh fruit and an umbrella for a tropical feel. Watch out, it bites! 110 N. El Dorado St., Stockton (209) 451-0617, French-25.com

It’s easy to envision the milky-green tinge of Midgley’s Public House’s grasshopper cocktail. The dessert in a glass tastes like an after-dinner mint, offering a sweet treat perfect for grown-up enjoyment, and the recipe is simple: green and white crème de menthe with a splash of cream. While the chocolate-mint cocktail goes down smooth, keep in mind it still boasts an alcoholic content you can feel (albeit it’s about half of the average cocktail). 296 Lincoln Cntr., Stockton (209) 474-7700, MidgleysPublicHouse.com

Make Taxes a BREEZE 

It’s that time of year again. Tax Day (April 15) is fast approaching! Whether you’re looking to maximize your refund, or minimize what you owe, San Joaquin tax professionals have helpful advice for you! Digest these quick tips before you file to ensure you’re being smart about your taxes. Be prepared. Before you sit down to start the process, compile all of the documents you may need, including those that apply to your income and deductions. This will keep you from getting up to collect items as new questions arise. Not only will you need the W-2s you receive from your job, but also any forms about unemployment income, alimony, rental properties, and more. Don’t start until you’ve received all of your tax documents in the mail. Entering incorrect numbers as guesstimates could cost you later.   “Make and use a checklist to ensure that you are not missing any information needed to complete your return,” suggests Dale Immekus, financial advisor at Dedicated Financial & Insurance Services in Lodi. “Basically anything with a dollar sign may come in to play.” It also helps to have the previous year’s tax return for both you and your spouse handy, as much of the information will be repetitive. Not only is it a time saver, it could also help limit errors. 34

BY NORA HESTON TARTE

“Make and use a checklist to ensure that you are not missing any information needed to complete your return.” –Dale Immekus

Take your time. “Don’t rush to complete the tax return,” warns Richard L. Manies, an enrolled agent (a federally licensed tax practitioner with unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS). Errors can result in paying more in taxes than you should, receiving a letter from the IRS, or both. Know when to ask for help. “I suggest that you consult a tax professional when you have had ‘big’ changes or ‘events’ in your life, such as getting married, having a child, purchasing a home, [earning an income] over $100,000, starting a business or purchasing a rental property, receiving an inheritance, or a death in the immediate family,” Richard says.   “If someone has received a letter from the IRS or the State of California indicating they have been assessed late penalties or owe past due taxes, then it is definitely time to call in a tax professional,” Dale adds.

Set yourself up for success. If cash flow allows, take steps throughout the year to reduce what you owe come April. “Consider increasing or maximizing your contributions to any tax deferred opportunities such as group retirement plans through work, or traditional IRA accounts,” Dale advises. These types of payments pay off at the end of the year with additional write-offs. Know your software. If you want to complete your return without the assistance of a professional, pick software you can count on. Richard suggests TurboTax. “Intuit, the parent company of TurboTax, also has developed a full line of tax software for tax professionals, is the developer of QuickBooks, and I have found that the company is fully engaged in all aspects of individual and business tax preparation,” he says. In addition, TurboTax (like many other providers) offers online tax support.

The Diet

The hottest new diet doesn’t only observe the benefits of coffee, other vices are included, too. Based on the consumption of sirtfood, the sirtuin diet bolsters genes that help fight age-related changes such as a slowing metabolism, forgetfulness, and reproductive health. The best part? Top sirtfoods—all revered as sirtuin activators—are blackcurrants, green tea, dark chocolate (yes, you read that right), kale, olives, capers, parsley, onions, turmeric, and omega-3 fish oil.

SUGAR A Manteca mother shares her love for digital art 

BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

“I decided if Frida can do it, I could give it a try,” Emily Whitaker says when asked what sparked her passion for art nearly seven years ago, referring of course to the movie that tells the true story of acclaimed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and her larger-than-life husband Diego Rivera.    Today, Emily has traded her paintbrush for a mouse pad as she enjoys her newest artistic venture, digital art. Under the name Tormented Sugar, she shares her current style, “digital pop art,” via Instagram, throughout areas of San Joaquin, and in print publications. “I decided to go with a pseudo-name to stand out in the overwhelming sea of artists online. I wanted to focus on building an online presence to get my art out into the world one painting at a time,” she explains.   Emily also shares her work through involvement with 38

non-profits like Eye Will Inc., out of Modesto. This particular group provides for visually impaired children and hits close to home, as Emily was born premature with 20/200 vision. “It’s not far from legal blindness,” the artist explains. “I rely mostly on my right eye to see the detail in my paintings.”   In 2014 Emily was gifted a laptop and then a tablet- giving her access to art apps like Sketchbook, Bamboo Paper, Infinite Paper, Sketch, and Art flow. With these tools, her love for digital art grew as she created Andy Warhol-esque works representing celebrities, shoes, and beauty products. “My Nicolas Cage portrait ended up on the front page of Huffington Post’s Art section, right next to my favorite Japanese artist Sebastian Masuda!”   Despite a long history as a working artist, it look Emily a while to accept her new position. When asked at what moment the Manteca mother of two felt like a true artist, Emily responds, “I decided to start telling people I was an artist, and then slowly it became natural and I believed it myself. You have to believe in yourself first, then others will believe in you too.”

Q&A Q.

I’ve let my previously dyed red hair fade; can I put blonde highlights over it? A. “There are a few things you can do- if your hair was a solid color before and had a solid red- you can do a strawberry blonde with highlights if you have naturally dirty blonde hair. A gentle bleach wash will brighten and lighten the hair to give it some tone. The goal is to always keep your hair in good condition while taking [it] from style to style. It may take a few times but it’s better that way.” – Melanie Clardy, Cosmetologist, Perfect Balance Day Spa

Q.

How can I keep myself in the realistic realm of hair goals? A. “Communicate with your stylist! We’re beauticians not magicians. Celebrity looks are not always very realisticespecially in one appointment. Also, pay attention to your own hair, texture, and face shape to know what’s best for you.” – Ann Staley, Alter Custom Hair Design Owner and Stylist A. “This is a really big part in a stylist's job: how to make your client feel beautiful in their own skin. That’s the number one thing for me. I always try to compliment their strengths and suggest that they don’t become married to the photo of the hairstyle you want. Everyone has a different texture and type of hair, plus some of these photos are photo shoppedit’s not even real!” – Melanie Clardy, Cosmetologist, Perfect Balance Day Spa

If you’re like us, we just can’t stop asking our stylists questions! As soon as we’re seated the brain-picking begins… “I read this online, is it true?” We’ve compiled a few of our favorite FAQ’s covering everything from the best products and common misconceptions to high maintenance colors and adventurous styles.

Q.

What are your two favorite products right now? A. “We love the Aveda Shampure Dry Shampoo for texture and body; and Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight for smoothing… [it] reduces your drying time, too!” – Abbie Castillo, Lead Hair Stylist at The Spa at Wine & Roses A. “There are so many great products out now it’s hard to choose only two--Aquage Up All Night Mousse and Kenra Dry Thickening Spray #4!” – Iva Watson, Salon Sirah Owner and Stylist A. “I really love All-Nutrient’s flat iron spray. It’s great for protection and gives a beautiful shine without the grease, and it’s a very simple thing to do if you don’t have a lot of time. And J Beverly Hills’ Root Booster Foam.” – Melanie Clardy, Cosmetologist, Perfect Balance Day Spa

Q.

I’m trying to make myself look younger- what’s a good way to go- color, cut, etc.? A. “The whole package! Cut and color are both important factors in going for a younger look. Our stylists will consult with you and together you can choose a cut and color that achieves the look you are going for.” – Abbie Castillo, Lead Hair Stylist, The Spa at Wine & Roses

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

Q.

Why is it important to consult a professional when looking for a light grey or pastel color? A. “To get those colors you have to go all the way with bleach to a pale, pale white. If you have dark hair there is no way you’re getting that color, or else you’ll have some serious damage. There is also a risk of the color going green, so if you have blue toned silver, and are not light enough it will mix with the yellow and turn to green. It’s a big process!” – Anne Oliver, Owner, The Head Quarters Salon

Q.

Does wearing your hair up cause a lot of breakage?

A. “Tricky question, some hair that’s extremely fine shouldn’t have stress on it at all, but for most we recommend covered bands and bobby pins with covered tips to prevent any breakage.” – Iva Watson, Salon Sirah Owner and Stylist A. “If you wear it up in the same spot with a clip it can definitely cause breakage and even more so if your hair is heavy.” – Anne Oliver, Owner, The Head Quarters Salon

Q.

Does leaving conditioner in longer make it work harder?

A. “It sure does! Leave conditioner in for three to five minutes- don’t focus on roots unless you have some breakage.” – Ann Staley, Alter Custom Hair Design Owner and Stylist

Q.

What are important things to consider before investing in a high maintenance style or color? A. The biggest thing is time- do you have it? Fashion colors don’t last very long and they really fade quickly. I’m a mom of two young boys and even I have a hard time finding time for my hair. Talk to your stylist about what you really have time for and what you can do- would you use products? Together we can figure out a way to cater to you and find the best look to go with. – Melanie Clardy, Cosmetologist, Perfect Balance Day Spa

Q.

What is the best type of brush to use?

Q.

What can be done to avoid brassy tones that come in after I get my hair colored? A. “Glazes or glosses help control brassy tones. It is also important to use a shampoo and conditioner to preserve your color. As well, you can get a toning shampoo and conditioner and alternate it with your color care shampoo. Another trick is to use violet toned shampoos. You can also add in low lights, and cool tones. We also recommend an Aveda product, Blue Malva, which is designed to take the brassiness out of your hair.” – Abbie Castillo, Lead Hair Stylist, The Spa at Wine & Roses

Q.

My hair is oily at the roots, but dry at the ends and has no volume- tips?

A. “Focus on shampooing the roots and not so much the ends, and do the opposite with conditioner. Make sure you have volumizing shampoo and conditioner- it will keep hair from getting oily and add volume. Oh, and use dry shampoo between washes for both volume and to kick oil.” – Ann Staley, Alter Custom Hair Design Owner and Stylist

A. “Follow up your color service with a glaze to help seal the cuticle. Try not to wash your hair in hot water, cooler is better. Use a sulfate free shampoo to help hold the color. There are also shampoos for home use that have tonal value and can treat brassiness.” – Iva Watson, Salon Sirah Owner and Stylist

A. “It depends on what you’re doing. For a blow out use a round brush. Definitely get a backcomb brush, great for creating volume. There is a wet brush that is great for gently de-tangling fine hair without breakage.” – Ann Staley, Alter Custom Hair Design Owner and Stylist

Q.

I want to go blonde- how long should that transformation take if I’m currently dark brown? How can I be sure it’s being done safely and correctly? A. “There is no easy answer to this question, it depends on many variables, and you should consult a stylist. But you definitely want your stylist to use Olaplex with this color choice. Going blonde is not something to be rushed, you should allow as much time as possible.” – Iva Watson, Salon Sirah Owner and Stylist A. “First, don’t try this at home- it will be a disaster and you’ll end up spending quadruple the amount for color correction. It also matters so much what you already have on your hair. If you currently have a box color on your hair it will need to be corrected- but if you have had professional services it will be easier. Be patient and expect many appointments to get your desired result!” – Anne Oliver, Owner, The Head Quarters Salon www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

GET THE most HOW from YOUR BANK TO SPECIAL P R O M OT I O N A L SECTION

When you think about banking, the question at hand should not be, what can you do for your bank, but what can your bank do for you? It’s not enough to have a secure place to store your hard earned dollars anymore (though that is still important). Your bank should be working to earn both your trust and your business.   First, categorize what is most important to you. Is convenience key? A big bank with many ATM locations may seem appealing, but don’t forget to factor in customer service. Smaller banks offer all of the services heavily advertised at large banking institutions but with a better personal experience. BAC Community Bank in Stockton even reimburses ATM fees accrued from machines not owned by them (up to $4.99 per transaction or $20 per month). What could be more convenient than that?   Technology also lends to convenience. In a time where we are all (almost) permanently glued to our smart phones, technology is inarguably a big part of our lives. Not only can it bring ease into life, making mundane tasks simpler to accomplish, it’s one of the reasons banking has gone mobile. “You can pay all your bills in advance or have them scheduled,” explains Josef Britschgi, marketing and product manager at BAC. This helps people avoid late fees and manage funds more effectively. Technology is also a terrific way to stay on top of your banking activity. And with account activity available at your fingertips around the clock, it’s a great tool for identifying fraud quickly.   At BAC Community Bank, staff encourages their clients to take advantage of the technology and ser-

vices they have to optimize their banking experience, Josef explains. And to sweeten the pot, they’ll reward your efforts—with cash.   As part of a new program called Kasasa®, customers of BAC Community Bank can choose from one of three accounts with different reward programs. The options include a two percent interest on balances up to $10,000; a three percent cash back reward on debit card purchases with a $7 monthly maximum; or a $6 credit to be used toward music or other purchases from Amazon, Google Play, or iTunes.    It also helps when your accounts work together. With the first two options, rewards can also be earned on savings accounts, and you can even have your rewards directly transfer into savings each month to help build your nest egg.

Because banks benefit from your business, they shouldn’t charge you to hold your money. Look for a bank—like BAC Community Bank—where Kasasa® accounts are always free of monthly service charge, and you aren’t penalized for having a low balance. The less you pay out of pocket, the more you’re saving in the long run.

CHOOSE the perfect DIAMOND 

BY MELISSA HUTSELL

Let’s face it, choosing the perfect diamond can be overwhelming– and in consideration of time and money, it is essential to make sure you get the most out of your investment. At Danz Jewelers in Lodi, the experienced and certified staff have the knowledge and inventory options to help guide you through the process of selecting the perfect diamond. Dan and his staff travel to Antwerp, Belgium to pick “the crème of the crop” diamonds straight from the suppliers, say owner Dan Ingrum. Danz’s jewelry buying process is unique and personalized, allowing customers to choose their perfect diamond. Here are some steps to ensure your diamond lives up to your expectations, and that you get the most beautiful diamond for your budget: 1. Don’t buy your diamond online. That would be like choosing your spouse based on their driver’s license photo. The certificates issued with online orders are often inconsistent and stretch the truth with the information that they provide (color, clarity, etc). As Dan puts it, each diamond has a personality. These certificates give you numbers, but they don’t show 66

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

the aesthetic quality of the diamond. It is important to see the diamond, instead of just reading about it. This is why Danz stocks such a large selection of diamonds and presents each one in a solitaire ring. This allows customers to try them on, compare different qualities side by side, and see how they look on your finger. Of course, once a diamond is chosen, a customer can wear it in the solitaire or have one of Danz goldsmiths design a custom setting. 2. Buy your diamonds from someone who will stand behind them. When you buy from Danz, the entire process is done at the store. There are three goldsmiths on staff, including a graduate gemologist (the highest jeweler accreditation), who will design your ring, set your diamond and always be there to make any adjustments needed and keep your ring looking like new. 3. You should buy a diamond simply because it looks beautiful to you. Do you drink a particular type of wine because

the wine-maker told you it was the best, or simply because it taste great to you? asks Ingrum. Danz Jewelers has the selection to help you find your perfect diamond. Danz Jewelers has served Lodi and the surrounding communities for more than 31 years. All staff members are highly qualified and receive GIA training. Danz Jewelers has a large selection of beautiful jewelry, but specializes in diamonds from Antwerp. They carry a variety of shapes and stock sizes from ¼ carat to over 4 carats in various price ranges. When you choose Danz Jewelers, you know you are choosing excellence.

SPECIAL P R O M OT I O N A L SECTION

The Salvetti Group was founded two years ago, transitioning from a larger broker dealer in town. Salvetti’s team offers complete open architecture for investment solutions and utilizes robust planning software to help clients achieve their goals. With over 20 years of industry experience, both AJ and Nick Salvetti are credentialed CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS™, which is an extensive certification program focusing on estate planning, taxation, retirement planning, investments, and insurance. They work closely with approximately 140 households, most of which are professionals and executives, business owners, or retirees. Through their experience, the Salvettis have learned the ins and outs of positive financial planning. Read their steps to get started. 1. Have a thorough fact-finding session. This step sets the foundation for your plan, and though it can be time consuming, it’s very important. Many focus on one or two important aspects of their plan (insurance or retirement planning, for example) but all plans have many areas that people may not have considered. Those additional planning areas can actually help you achieve your hot button planning goals. Individual goals are extremely diverse and can include everything from retirement, estate or legacy, and education planning, to insurance analysis, investments, taxes, and more. 2. Put together a customized plan. It is important that these plans evaluate many different investment

environments. Salvetti, for example, model average returns, lower returns the first two years after retirement, and a simulation software program that runs 10,000 complete arbitrary investment returns. As much as clients would love it, markets do not go up at a predictable rate each year so the financial plan must account for these environments. It’s important to note that while Salvetti does not process tax returns or create the trusts that make up the estate plans, they strive to work with clients’ other trusted advisors (CPA, attorney, insurance professional, etc.) There is not one phase of the financial planning process that will cover all client needs so it is imperative that everything works together. “All oars need to move the boat in the same direction,” so make sure all of your trusted advisors are in sync for your common goals. 3. Implement the plan. Take the customized plan and begin the process of putting it to action. You might be amazed with the number of people who go through the planning process and fail to put it to work.

4. Monitor the plan. Aside from the first step, this is the most important step because it takes some interaction from you. Be sure to relay life-changing events to your planner. These events include job changes, major purchases, marriage, birth of children or grandchildren, death, or divorce. Financial plans are dynamic and they need to change with you.

2016 HOW TO

SPECIAL P R O M OT I O N A L SECTION

Here in San Joaquin, people considering a move want choices in their selection of home styles, sizes, and prices. More than that, they want the kind of community amenities that can elevate the home buying experience into a lifestyle change.    River Islands in Lathrop is a true master planned community, planned to offer a unique blend of homes, schools, recreation, restaurants, employment, and shops, all proximate to public transportation. More than 360 homes have been sold since the Grand Opening of the community in late 2014 and four new home neighborhoods are slated for model home openings in the summer and fall of 2016. The homebuilders at River Islands have included such popular features as outdoor California rooms (some with full kitchens), lakefront docks, guest suites, and single story plans. One neighborhood has eliminated garages at the front of the homes, and provided a separate back “alley” for garage access instead.    A strong attraction for family buyers is the K-8 River Islands Technology Academy, whose new campus opened last August to accommodate its student body of approximately 575 pupils. The school’s recently announced top test scores statewide are the result of an academic culture created by committed administrative and teaching staff, parent volunteers, and students equipped with iPads, Chromebooks or similar devices for in-class instruction and at-home projects. Students living within River Islands and the Banta Elementary School District have priority for admission to the school.   Elsewhere in River Islands, two neighborhood parks have already opened, and a lakeside boathouse 70

with boat rentals and a full bar and grille is now serving lunch and dinner. Included in the design of the parks are picnic areas, a playing field, bocce courts, a boat launch, and sand volleyball. The parks provide a natural gathering place for the neighborhoods; in fact, so many residents turned out for the first National Night Out that River Islands received a special award from the City of Lathrop.    Susan Dell’Osso, Project Director for River Islands, understands the importance of building “a destination community”. “This is something very special for the region—a community that appeals to people’s desires to put down roots and feel committed to their neighborhood’s future. We elected to hold our Grand Opening only when we had a big story to tell, in hopes that peo-

ple would see their own futures reflected in our community on their first visit. We wanted people to imagine living here, sending their kids to neighborhood schools here, riding their bikes to the parks, sailing on one of our lakes, sitting on the deck of our restaurant and looking out on the future home of our business campus. In time, we will have a retail area, office buildings, trails along the San Joaquin River, and more lakes and parks—all attributes of a lifestyle where people can live, work, play, learn, explore and belong.”

FIND Furniture

THAT FITS 

BY NORA HESTON TARTE

It’s easy to fall in love with the color of a couch or the woodwork on a bed frame, but design isn’t the only element that matters when it comes to choosing furniture for your home. Comfort is key. “I have a lot of customers that come in and say they hate their furniture; it’s uncomfortable, it doesn’t fit them,” shares Susan Daniger, interior designer and co-owner of Daniger Furniture in Lodi (the oldest family-owned furniture store in San Joaquin County). Durability and ease are important

when selecting pieces to furnish your home. “There’s actually an art to [buying furniture],” she says.    First, consider your space. Buying a large sectional for a small family room poses the same problem as selecting a bistro table for your grand dining hall. Furniture has to fit. “There’s lots of different size furniture,” Susan says. “It’s very difficult when people go into a large store and try to get the visual of that will fit into their home.”   Combat this issue by bringing measurements and a tape measure into the showroom. Knowing the dimensions of the space you need to fill as well as the exact dimensions of the furniture you’re considering will save you from surprises later. There’s nothing worse than a cabinet that sticks out two feet from your wall and can’t be opened at the same time as the back door.   Lifestyle also plays into furniture selection. How many people eat at your dining room table on a regular basis? How many family members gather on your couch for family movie night? Furniture needs to suit your lifestyle.   Perhaps most important, consider your own size. “Nothing is worse than a short person whose feet are off the ground or a tall person whose knees are up around

their ears,” Susan explains. When you step into a store, sit in a few different pieces to decide what is comfortable. Staff at Daniger is trained to notice how people are sitting so they can make recommendations to maximize contentment. Size doesn’t have to limit style. Guests can have both fashion and function. Susan assures that once size is determined, there is still an array of styles to choose from.   Above all else, remember to compromise. “Keep an open mind to solutions and remember that the most important thing is that it’s comfortable,” Susan says.

HOW RECEIVE Advanced Robotic SURGERY TO SPECIAL P R O M OT I O N A L SECTION

For Women in Wine Country 

Dr. Param Gill, a local OB/GYN, continues to be on the cutting edge of the newest medical technology: robotic surgery. Robotic surgery is the most minimally invasive surgical technique yet. Since 2013, Dr. Gill has performed more than 150 surgeries with this method at her practice. As if that isn’t impressive enough, Dr. Gill is considered one of the pioneers in this field, which has resulted in her doing the most robotic surgeries in the greater Stockton/Lodi area.   Contrary to popular belief, robotic surgery operations are performed by the doctor herself with the assistance of an instrument that acts as an extension of her hands and eyes, says Dr. Gill. The instrument is a sophisticated tool that consists of robotic arms. These ‘arms’ hold surgical tools and translate the surgeon’s wrist, hand and finger movements. These movements are so precise as to be able to peel the skin off a grape and stitch it back on, thereby balancing the surgeon’s slightest hand gestures and magnifying the doctor’s view. The surgeon has complete control of the device and each of its arms while sitting at a

BY MELISSA HUTSELL

console in the operating room near the patient. Surgeons guide the tools while viewing a 3-D, high definition screen, allowing the doctor to see 10 times the magnification of the naked eye. Clearer optics enables doctors to zoom in, assess finer details, and be more efficient.    So why choose robotic surgery for your gynecological needs? For Dr. Gill’s patients, this surgical option offers a shorter recovery time so patients are back to work and family life sooner. Perhaps the most impressive and worthwhile benefit is that the procedure is cosmetically advantageous, explains Dr. Gill. “Patients can expect less bleeding, less pain, less scaring, fewer adhesions, and a much quicker recovery.” Small, precise incisions lower the risk of infection, adhesions and blood clots. And that is just scratching the surface of what robotic surgery offers patients, not only at her practice, but also in any general surgery case. “This is a new approach for anybody that needs surgery.” Dr. Gill and her team, which includes Dr. Afiba Arthur and Dr. Jacqualin Miller (the latter of whom is trained in minimally invasive surgical procedures from Stanford University), have advanced their skill set to encompass robotic single-site surgery, which consists of one small incision made through the patient’s belly’s button. “This is an example of the technological progression within medicine,” adds Dr. Gill, “When you see the results, it makes you a believer. The marriage of technology with surgery takes us to a whole new level of providing care to our patients.” FOR MORE INFORMATION: Gill Obstetrics & Gynecology Medical Group, Inc, (209) 334-4924, Gillobgyn.com

Single-Site, Robotic-Assisted Hysterectomy Surgery Gill OB/GYN Medical Group is the first in San Joaquin County to offer scarless hysterectomy surgery. Unlike most hysterectomies where a visible incision is made, this scarless surgery is thanks to a dime-sized incision made through the belly button. Belly button incisions mean less pain, quicker recovery, no scaring. Dr. Gill is highly experienced and expertly trained in robotic surgery for women.

Skilled Nursing Facility

FOR YOUR SHORT-TERM REHAB STAY 

After an illness or a procedure, a skilled nursing facility (SNF) may be the best option for short-term rehabilitation care. It is often used as an alternative to home health. When considering your options for rehab, keep in mind that SNFs typically offer more in the way of physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Not only do most facilities run these services seven days per week, as opposed to the two to three days common with home health, but they have more resources such as an extensive therapy gym with advanced therapeutic equipment. “Patients that are short-term rehab usually have higher clinical needs,” says Melanie Toutai of Arbor Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Lodi.    Every SNF is different. Before settling on which facility to attend, try touring the options near you. Not only will this give you an opportunity to meet the staff and view the therapy and other rooms, it is also the perfect time to ask questions. If you know in advance what type of exercises will benefit you, ensure related equipment is available. This includes, not is not limited to, the following: Omnicycle: Upper extremity/lower extremity strengthening, provides resistance to help with strengthening Electrical Stimulation (ESTIM): Helps with managing pain, strengthening, sensory input, motor input, and urinary incontinence. Short Wave Diathermy: Helps in the management of pain, edema, circulatory information, and healing wounds that are over 30 days old. 76

NuStep: A bike for cardiac patients that monitors heart rate and helps to increase endurance. Synchrony: A revolutionary speech modality that improves outcomes and quality of life for individuals with dysphasia.    Many individuals also benefit from access to an on-staff dietician. “Facilities with a dietician on staff have the advantage in assisting complex patient needs including G-tube, NG tube, and TPN feedings,” says Sophia Dhaliwal of Wagner Heights Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Stockton. DESIGN A HOW room without TO A PLAN SPECIAL P R O M OT I O N A L SECTION

BY KATHLEEN JENNISON

I am all about having a plan, a list, and being organized. Heck, I’ve always planned out my day, week, month, and year so much so that my family has fun teasing me about it. If you follow me much, you know I always say you must have a “Master Plan” (stern face) when doing any decorating or remodeling. But ouch, now I am suggesting you don’t need to have a plan? “What gives”, you say?    Here is the rub, you can design a room without a plan, if you follow some simple, basic rules of color harmony. Our brain wants harmony because it makes you feel calm and no matter how many nice sofas, pretty chairs, or charming rugs I show you, without harmony it is a big disaster.   So if you are one of those people that balks at anything remotely like a plan, but o.k. with a few rules, then here are the three rules of color theory (and there are a gazillion books about this) that you can follow and your room will look pulled together and “feel” great. STRATEGY #1 – A ROOM THAT FEELS VIBRANT When you want your room to feel vibrant and be full of energy then choose a complimentary color scheme. Complimentary colors are opposite each other on s color wheel. (Yes go to the craft store or office supply store and buy a color wheel, it is fun). So for example you could choose red and green. STRATEGY #2 – A ROOM THAT FEELS HAPPY When you want your room to feel happy and vivacious chose a split complimentary color scheme. Split complimentary colors are one base

78

|

color from your complimentary color and the two colors right next to the opposite complimentary color. So for example you might want blue, yellow and gold. STRATEGY #3 – A ROOM THAT FEELS MELLOW When you want your room to feel mellow and interesting chose an analogous color scheme. Analogous colors are one base color from your complimentary colors and the two colors on each side of the base color. So for example you might pick green, turquoise and celadon. If you like to fly by the seat of your pants, here is your chance to figure out

a nicely designed room that will still look put together. Remember, if you still need some help with your design, our designers are on standby……

PREVENT tooth decay 

BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Tooth decay is described as the destruction of your tooth enamel. It occurs when plaque, a bacteria film that forms on teeth, produces acids that attack tooth enamel activated by contact with sugars from food or drink. Without proper care, the plaque presents a welcome environment for cavities. Also referred to as pediatric dental disease, tooth decay is the number one chronic childhood illness. While cavities can affect everyone, they are more common in children. (However tooth-root decay, when gum recession allows decay to affect the root of a tooth, is most common in people over age 50.)   Left untreated, tooth decay can result in pain, infection, and tooth loss. In turn, these can lead to problems with eating, speaking, and learning, which are all significant setbacks for children. In more severe cases, malnourishment, bacterial infections, emergency surgery, diabetes, pneumonia, heart disease, stroke, and death are all possible.   The good news is, tooth decay is entirely preventable. Dr. Rafat Razi, a pediatric dentist in Tracy, breaks it down into four, easy-tofollow steps. 1. Eat healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, which increase saliva flow and help wash away food particles. 80

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

2. Brush twice daily and floss often, especially before nighttime brushing. 3. Change toothbrushes when they wear out, about every three months, for effective plaque removal. 4. Maintain regular dental checkups, and do not wait until toothache occurs to make an appointment. Children should see a dentist by their first birthday.   These rules apply to both adults and children. Successful plaque removal sets people of all ages up for success, and it is the core of a healthy oral hygiene routine. Fluoride toothpaste also packs cavity-fighting powers, and fluoride supplements can be given to children too young for fluoride toothpaste where it does not naturally occur in the water supply. As a parent, it’s important to take care of your own teeth for several reasons. Not only does good oral hygiene and eating habits help you stave off tooth decay and other related illnesses, it also sets a good example. “When adults set a good example, children will also model their behavior,” Dr. Razi explains.    Don’t forget to help your kids brush, too. It’s not enough just to get the brush in their hand. Effective brushing is necessary to remove food particles, fight plaque, and clear away residue from sugary drinks and snacks.

PREPARE your

child for the

ONLINE WORLD 

There’s no denying it – the online world is here to stay. And with that comes a lot of responsibility. The safety of tweens and teens is at the forefront of conversations about online-use, as well as changing social relationships. While these are viable concerns, there’s an upside to the technological uptick. Technology and the Internet put a breadth of information at children’s fingertips and create new ways for them to learn and innovate. Parents and educators should work together to amplify technology as a tool, while minimizing its potential for misuse.   “From kindergarten through college, teachers are using technology to deliver instruction and engage students,” says Margaret Stephens, director of communications at St. Mary’s High School.   St. Mary’s faculty has spent the past two years becoming familiar with iPads and incorporating the technology into their instruction. “The iPad has allowed me to better attend to the learning needs of my visual and auditory learners,” adds Kim Gillespie, English department chair at St. Mary’s. “I can direct them to specific sites that help them grasp concepts and strengthen skill sets.”   The iPad is also used to analyze and research information, communicate a student’s ideas, and offer a platform for collaboration. It supports essential skill areas to complement—not replace—the special teacher-student relationship that’s at the heart of a St. Mary’s classroom.   While schools may be grooming students for the 21st century workplace, parents need to address the potential struggles that come with the growing use of technology and the Internet. ton, post millennials (a.k.a. Generation Zers) can upload photos for their followers, or share emboldened statements with those they barely know.    Staff at St. Mary’s uses filters to limit students’ access to inappropriate web content and exposure to viruses, while also helping students to understand the importance of acting as responsible digital citizens. Social media, however, is a parent’s jurisdiction. The school only monitors such content when it involves campus threats, peer harassment, or negative comments made about the school.   “Many parents are often in the dark about what is really going on with their children’s social media and other online use,” Stephens warns. To ensure safety,

parents should impose age-appropriate limits on technology, and monitor when necessary. This could mean requiring a child to friend their parents on accounts or placing time restraints on computer use outside of homework; the specifics are up to the individual. Know, however, that how parents treat technology use at home sets a precedent for the rest of a child’s life.

IMPROVE

your oral HEALTH IN 2016 

BY JANICE SCOTT, DDS

We all know the importance of every day flossing, but do we do it? When flossing twice a day, correctly, you can reduce your gum pockets, bleeding, and soreness during cleanings by 50 percent. By removing plaque between your teeth daily, you can greatly reduce the risk of cavities between your teeth, saving money that can be spent on fun.    The key here is to remember it takes about 30 days to develop a habit. To keep this habit in the forefront of your mind have a set place for your toothbrush, floss, and paste, and ask your dentist, at your next cleaning, to share proper flossing practices for ultimate results. This will prevent gum disease, which results in bone loss around your teeth and bad breath!    Spend two weeks logging and maintaining a comprehensive food and drink journal. You may be surprised at what you con84

sume. The more processed the food, the faster bacteria in our mouth break down food; causing plaque, tarter, and increased risk of gum disease. Sports drinks and wine are loaded with sugar and acid, just like soda. If you’re indulging in these beverages, have them with your meal and remember to brush and floss after! It is good to wait 30 minutes to brush after eating or drinking acidic foods.   A regular checkup and cleaning will help you avoid painful emergencies. Cavities start small, but you don’t often feel them until they are a much larger problem. A small filling is much less expensive than waiting until a cavity has infected the tooth calling for a root canal and cap. Regular cleanings will help prevent gum disease, which can cause bad breath, bleeding, and receding gums and bone loss around your teeth. One of the first places some cancers manifest can be in the mouth. Be sure your dentist

and hygienist does an oral cancer screening at each appointment. Early detection is important. Also, at Deer Park Dental we take your blood pressure at each appointment. Many patients do not go to their physician regularly. This is a great screening to help prevent heart problems and stroke.    When your oral health is great, then you can concentrate on having a more beautiful smile instead of “putting out fires of dental disease”. Oral health is important to overall health, and you deserve it!

GET THE Best Visual OUTCOME WITH Cataract Surgery 

A cataract is an aging change to the lens of the eye that every human experiences if they live long enough. With age, the lens can become cloudy, and although there is no pain associated with the condition, there are symptoms, including blurred or hazy vision, glare from lights (especially at night), and the feeling of a “film” over the eye.   Most people that develop cataracts are over the age of 60; however, cataracts can occur at any age, even in children. Risk factors include eye injury, diabetes, family history, smoking, and use of certain medications. People who are significantly affected by cataracts may experience difficulty reading small print, seeing street signs, following a golf ball, or driving at night. When any of these symptoms develop, surgery may be recommended.   During traditional cataract surgery, the ophthalmologist uses surgical blades and hand-held instruments to remove the cataract, and then a new lens made of plastic is implanted into the eye. This monofocal 86

intraocular lens implant, or IOL, provides clear vision in the distance, but the patient usually still needs glasses for mid-range and reading.   Multifocal IOL implants allow patients to see clearly at all distances and can even correct astigmatism. These premium lens implants are ideal for cataract patients who want a replacement lens that provides a full range of clear vision. Today, there are several different types of premium lens implants available for cataract patients. The surgeons at Zeiter Eye Medical Group will work with each patient individually to decide which lens is best for their eyes and their vision needs.   “We have never been better prepared to perform cataract surgery than we are today,” says John H. Zeiter, MD, “We now have such a vast display of ‘rocket science’ technology for replacing the lens of the eye that we can expect excellent visual results in nearly every case.”   The most important technological advancement in cataract surgery in the last 40 years is the femtosecond laser, called

LenSx. The LenSx laser provides the surgeon with computerized, three-dimensional, high-resolution images that map each patient’s unique eye allowing the surgeon to achieve greater precision and customization than ever before.   Using the femtosecond laser, the surgeons at Zeiter Eye can customize the cataract procedure to the eye’s unique characteristics, resulting in better visual outcomes. When laser cataract surgery is paired with the latest lens implant technology, vision outcomes are improved, creating reduced, or even eliminated, reliance on glasses and contact lenses.

CHOOSE THE

blinds FOR YOUR HOME 

BY NORA HESTON TARTE

With a large array of window coverings available, it can be easy to employ the point and purchase method—simply selecting a set of low-cost blinds that caught your eye at the store—but there is more to consider. Some blinds are child-safe, some are energy-efficient, some offer lower costs, and others are a timesaver. So which ones are right for you? It’s all about lifestyle. Having the right window coverings is important. They can bring light to a dark space, protect furniture from sun damage, and contribute to the overall ambience of a home. Child- And Pet- Safe: Perhaps most important is child safety. Homes with infants, young children, and pets need to have appropriate window dressings, and they should be durable, too! “[This] has always been a top priority at Budget Blinds,” says Rod Smith, own88

er of Budget Blinds in Stockton. Alleviate concerns by making the right choice with cordless or guided chain loop coverings and retractable or motorized operating systems. Every collection—from traditional horizontal blinds, shaded systems, and shutters—offer these features. Energy-Efficient: Another popular area of concern is choosing window coverings that will insulate the home, keeping it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. “We have a solution and budget for every point of view,” Rod says. If efficiency is a top priority, solar shades are a viable option that won’t block desirable views. “The Architella Duette honeycomb shades by Hunter Douglas offers the greatest energy efficiency more than any other window covering available featuring a honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb design,” Rod adds. “With energy-efficient window treatments, as much as 50 percent of a home’s heating and cooling energy can be lost through its windows. The Architella Duette shade can help conserve energy more than any other window covering.”

Time-saving: “Today, family homes are more active than ever before,” Rod says. As families become more active, time efficiency adds value. Hassle-free window coverings utilize innovative designs that work for you, such as a shade system with motorization capabilities so you can schedule your blinds to open and close as desired. PowerView motorization by Hunter Douglas is one such option. “You can now operate your shades with the touch of a finger… with your app on your smart device, or [a] screen controller,” Rod says. Imagine being woken up in the morning by the sun seeping in as your shades open, and having them close automatically as the sun goes down again.

When the housing market is good, splurging on a bathroom remodel is a surefire way to recoup your investment—and then some. In fact kitchens and bathrooms are the best places to spend cash on your home, aside from typical maintenance projects, when you’re looking for a positive return. So how do you get the most bang for your buck?   Start with materials. High-end countertops can reinvent a space, and because most bathrooms have small surfaces to cover, the cost doesn’t vary too much when you’re talking about granite, marble, soapstone, and other solid materials.   “All those materials for a vanity top are pretty reasonable,” says Gary Mazzera, owner of Mazzera’s in Stockton, which specializes in bathroom and kitchen remodels. In fact, according to him, “tile is more expensive,” because it is more laborious and time consuming to install.   In addition to looking modern, these materials are also easier than tile to keep clean, with no cracks and crevices to hide mildew. This cuts down on your bathroom maintenance, and will be a big appeal to potential buyers if you intend to sell.    One of the biggest trends today is swapping a tub for a walk-in shower. In general, showers get more use and closet-sized versions don’t offer much sanctuary. So, when square footage is limited and you have to choose, go big or go home. Gary suggests choosing new doors, glass, and valves, as well as adding a pedestal. A place to sit inside your shower can be designed for comfort or necessity, but regardless of your reason, a handicap- or age-accessible bathroom is a bonus for resells. 90

“I think good planning… can help you keep your cost down,” Gary adds. Hire a professional team to plan your redesign and install all the new pieces. “People nowadays what they really want is one person or one company to do everything for them.” It can take the guesswork out of the process, and grant you piece of mind. Nobody wants countless sub-contractors streaming in and out of their home. “We take care of the whole project,” Gary says of Mazzera’s.    If earning top dollar isn’t your main goal, design a refuge that fits your lifestyle. Have you always dreamed of a steam shower? Get one. Does a luxurious granite shower

wall speak to you? Add it! Specialists can offer personalized tips to help keep costs down while building your dream space, taking into account everything from the lighting to the showerhead.

SENIOR

LIVING community

CONTRIBUTED BY JACLYN POWELL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RIO LAS PALMAS, A FIVE STAR SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY

When looking into Senior Living options, it can often feel like an overwhelming task. Many times, adult children are involved in helping their parents make this decision. Family members are often overwhelmed with the role of parenting their parents and do not know where to begin. When mentioning the phrase “senior living”, the words institutional, cold, boring, and unpleasant smells often come to the forefront of a senior’s mind. However, this is not the case in most senior living communities these days. The idea of “retirement” living with assistance is a fairly re-

92

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

cent idea that many seniors are not familiar with. Most retirement communities are inviting, tastefully decorated, have a full calendar of social and recreational activities throughout the day, and teams of caring, welltrained professionals.   It is so important to know your options—find out what is available in your area and visit. We are all aging; it is never too early to educate ourselves. Your physician, local senior center, or department on aging can normally help guide your way; however, there are still many choices and decisions to be considered. You will hear terms like Independent Living, Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s/Memory Care and Skilled Nursing. Some communities may offer all of these options, while some specialize. It is important to ask questions and become familiar with these terms and what each of these levels of care has to offer. Once you are educated, you will then have a better understanding of what level of care will best suit you or your loved one.    As you begin your search and visit communities, remember that you are choosing a lifestyle, not real estate. Be sure to make observations, ask questions, and to carefully consider the answers. Is the environment comfortable to you and the potential resident? Is the environment friendly and welcoming? Do the associates appear happy, polite, and show respect to the residents and visitors? Is the community clean and free from offensive or masking odors? Are the rooms furnished, or can the resident bring their own personal belongings? What is the longevity of the management and associates? One of the most important observations is: are the residents well groomed and engaged? Are you introduced to residents and associates during your visit? Ask for testimonials from residents and family members. It is very helpful to find out about family involvement—is it encouraged?    Remember, too, that food and dining is an important social experience. Wonderfully prepared and tasteful meals with choices and appealing presentation are

important for mental and physical health. Be sure to have lunch during one of your visits to try the food. Likewise, a full complement of recreational, social, wellness, and spiritual activities should be scheduled. You should review the monthly calendar and see what programs are offered that you or your loved one would be interested in. Be sure that you or your family member will be engaged and that there are programs offered that would spark their interest. Visit more than once. One unscheduled visit is always good too; it paints a true picture. Please contact Jaclyn Powell at Rio Las Palmas at (209) 957-4711 if we can answer any of your questions. We would love to be a resource to you in helping you find the best fit in senior living for you or your loved one.

SAVE MONEY, Save the Planet WITH Artificial Turf 

You may be considering ditching the green to save some green, but don’t overlook the beauty of having it all. While steady rainfall has given San Joaquin residents hope, the California drought is still looming. And while water is scarce, costs skyrocket. Ditch the drought doubt by replacing your lawn (home or commercial) with a low maintenance artificial turf alternative. And because this good-looking grass substitute doesn’t need to be watered or mowed, you’ll save money while also saving the planet.   The benefits of switching to synthetic grass from a grass lawn are threefold. Of course you’ll save on maintenance (while banking some free time), but you’ll also help the planet by preserving water, ditching the fertilizer, and lowering pollution created by lawnmowers, all while getting rewarded with a beautiful, patch-free lawn that doesn’t make your skin itch.    Not only is artificial turf environmental94

ly friendly, it’s good for your wallet, too (a typical grass lawn requires approximately 55 gallons of water per square foot per year). Not to mention, thanks to aesthetically pleasing high-end, low-cost options like EasyTurf Synthetic Grass (available exclusively at Green Man Materials in Stockton, a locally owned and operated landscape materials supply store), you won’t lose your street-cred with neighbors.    The NFL tested (and approved) solution to your lawn problem is utilized by 22 of 23 NFL teams that choose FieldTurf products. When compared to other products, MaxxFlow and rinse-clean drainage technology outperforms most other synthetic turf backing options, and a long life expectancy gives users ease of mind knowing they’ll install something that lasts, with a manufacturer’s warranty that guarantees eight years of problem-free turf.   Looking to get this lush green look for less? Do it yourself with Green Man Material’s easy install kit. Each kit includes 75

square feet of EasyTurf that rolls out like sod as well as sand and nails. You don’t have to be a professional to install it yourself! The only extra you’ll need to pick up is decomposed granite sand, but that’s readily available at Green Man Materials, too, making the store a one-stop shop for your entire lawn-installation project.   Have a bigger mission in mind? Check out the other size options available at Green Man Materials, and ask one of the knowledgeable staff members how they can help you make your lawn look its best.

2016 SPRING Clean HOW TO

SPECIAL P R O M OT I O N A L SECTION

With summer fast approaching, many of us in San Joaquin County look warily to our garage, as we plan for spring cleaning. Somehow, Styrofoam packaging from holiday gifts, paint cans from fall projects, and the kid’s outdated electronics have all found a new home – cluttering our valuable storage space.   De-cluttering is a breeze when items belong in trash or recycling bins, but what about things that can’t be thrown away curbside? It is not only illegal to dispose of items like fluorescent bulbs, paint, electronics, and appliances in curbside trash, but it is also detrimental to the environment and can wreak havoc on our soil, air, and water.   Because of the inconvenience of disposing of these items properly, many people let them pile up in their homes. Fortunately, the San Joaquin County Department of Public Works is here to help! As Planning and Materials Management professionals, analysts David Gorton and Elisa Moberly explain that there are numerous convenient locations that offer disposal options for many of these items. Residents can visit SJCRecycle.org for a comprehensive listing of locations to drop off items, such as computer monitors, cell phones, fluorescent bulbs, plastic bags, paint, appliances, used motor oil, tires and more throughout San Joaquin County.   Rechargeable batteries power commonly used items like cell phones and cordless power tools. Once discarded, they are considered hazardous by the State of California due to their high levels of toxicity, corrosive materials, and heavy metals. If properly recycled, the reported three billion rechargeable batteries sold in the U.S. each year can be reclaimed, and their valuable mate-

rials and rare metals can be used to make other products. Common stores like Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Staples offer free, in-store recycling bins.   Paint cans are also a common culprit standing in the way of your spring cleaning. Push them into a corner no longer, because stores like Ace Hardware, Kelly-Moore Paint, and Stockton Color Center, as well as the County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility, all happily take your left over paint (water or oil based). Resins, solvents, pigments, and toxic and flammable additives—hazardous to human health and our environment—all make paint a no-go for curbside disposal.    Aside from crucial environmental protection, recycling hazardous items in an ap-

propriate manor allows for a reduction of waste piling up in landfills and boosts our community, as recycling creates many jobs within our community! “Proper disposal of hazardous materials protects your health and your family’s future,” encourages Moberly. “The Communities of San Joaquin County strive to make disposal more convenient for you by working with retailers and public agencies to provide local drop off sites.”   Visit SJCRecycle.org for a detailed, comprehensive list of recycling locations and options, as you prepare your home for summer fun!

TAKE ADVANTAGE HOW of the CALIFORNIA TO ENERGY Upgrade SPECIAL P R O M OT I O N A L SECTION

The Energy Upgrade California program gives homeowners incentives to advance several items within their home, including the HVAC unit, water heater, windows, and attic insulation. These updates are all environmentally friendly and can help save money in the long run, but sometimes the upfront costs deter individuals from taking advantage. With this program, however, homeowners can gain up to $6,500 in rebates based on the improvements they make.   To participate in the program, homeowners must use a participating contractor of the Energy Upgrade California program; Lovotti Inc. is a one-stop shop that can do all of these upgrades for you. Here,

Rebate Program 

staff has the information to get started. To gain the most from the program, professionals take a comprehensive look at all of the systems in the home to determine which upgrades can offer the most savings by reducing energy use. To qualify, simply own a single-family residence, two- to four-unit townhouse or condominium, or a two- to four-unit building in a homeowner association and choose eligible upgrade options to reduce overall energy use.   After a home upgrade professional provides an overview of the potential upgrades, homeowners can choose to undergo a regular home upgrade offering up to $3,000 in rebates (qualified by three or more basic upgrades) or an advanced home upgrade to receive up to the full amount. Customized bundles provide varying rebates based on the specific upgrades chosen. The exact rebate amount is decided

by these upgrades as well as the test results pre- and post- installation.    When dealing with rebates, the money invested (or part of it) is returned at a later date; in this case six to eight weeks after the final testing and all city and or county inspections have been signed off. The idea of being out several thousand dollars is enough to make some homeowners cringe, but this program offers certainties to calm those worries. Lovotti Inc. can also finance these upgrades through the pace programs available such as CA First and the HERO program. “Once we have a signed contract for the customer and we enter the homes information into the Home Upgrade and Advanced Home Upgrade program energy auditing software, the software shows the eligible rebates,” says Ryan Prudhel, HVAC Manager at Lovotti Inc. “The rebates are guaranteed.” Slight variations, however, can occur based on test results.   To get started, learn more about the program at myenergy.energyupgradeca.org or myenergy.energyupgradeca. org/contractor/search

FUND your DREAM 

BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Small businesses are plentiful in San Joaquin County- an aspect that strengthens our area’s unwavering community connection. At Bank of Stockton, this connection and the small business owner’s success, is nurtured through the bank’s many business-focused offerings.    As Angela Brusa, Vice President and Director of Marketing explains, “Bank of Stockton blends tradition with technology. The technological innovations we offer clients are an extension of our service. We understand that business owners are busy people, managing a million tasks a day. It is our job to deliver the personalized service when they need us—and when they don’t—it is our job to bring them the channels they need to do their banking and manage their business without having to come into the bank.”    These channels cover everything from payroll preparation and direct deposit to cash management and online banking. “There are a number of tools within online banking tailored to small business,” John R. Primasing Jr., Vice President and Chief Credit Officer, explains. “It allows the business owner to set parameters of accessibility for employees. So, a bookkeeper can look at the account, balance it, make sure everything is in sync—but not necessarily transfer money. Important parameters allow business owners to easily delegate work within their comfort zone.” 100

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

For those needing loan assistance, Bank of Stockton works with business owners in a personalized, streamlined manor— offering clients big bank options with a small town feel. They’ve streamlined the small business banking process to make it so easy—loans up to $100,000 have a one page application, and loans $100,000+-$500,000 are also streamlined, with a 48-hour turnaround for an answer.”   Loans under $500,000 are primarily handled by the bank’s front line branch Managers, and Personal Bankers, who help the customer through the application process and get the application to underwriting, where it is analyzed for approval; while loans over $500,000 are handled by a business banker.   As John notes, the army of bankers in each of Bank of Stockton’s branches, teamed with their suite of business products, helps customers with all small business banking needs with a personal touch. The bank’s lenders live and work in the community, with a majority of employees staying with Bank of Stockton for many years. This aspect strengthens the personal touch, as small busi-

ness owners build relationships with specific loan officers that are present throughout many of their business’ milestone moments— eliminating need to back track or recreate.   “We have hundreds of small business relationships,” Angela explains, “and the monies that we loan out goes directly back into the communities we serve.” John adds, “One way we help our service area is through funding to create more opportunity for jobs within local businesses.”   Rest assured, as you work seemingly endless hours tracking the progress of your growing business, that Bank of Stockton has your best interest in mind; since they come from the same foundation—a local, family-owned operation with strong community ties.

The same place that offers poolside cocktails and private cabanas during the day, transforms into a top-notch dance club with popular DJs spinning records at night. Gather around a fire pit and order drinks with your crew before taking the party downtown. Or, start with dinner at Nobu San Diego—where chef Nobu Matsuhisa is known for his Japanese fusion cuisine. Make a reservation, or grab cocktails and appetizers in the lounge. Not a fan of Nobu? From 90s rap classics to Billy Joel favorites, the venue doesn’t celebrate one genre over another. I dare you to leave without hearing the ever-popular Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. The establishment favorite garners cheers from boisterous bar mates. The longer you stay, the louder it gets. And if you make a big enough scene, or an embarrassing request, you may find yourself being serenaded on stage.    Next, head out into the night and stumble into The Tipsy Crow (770 5th Ave.), a tri-level venue with food, drinks, music, comedy, and bar games. OUTDOORS Adventure

Take advantage of the favorable weather and spend your day outside. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park (1253 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.) will leave you speechless. Climb to the top of one of the rocks overlooking the ocean. Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular from this place, but it’s a worthwhile venture any time of the day. It’s also a prime location for snapping a few photos. Not only does it capture the essence of San Diego—all crashing waves and blue skies—anyone looks good against that backdrop.   While tourist attractions are popular for a reason, taking the road less traveled is a welcome escape. Cabrillo National Monument (1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr.) marks Juan Cabrillo’s discovery of San Diego, but perhaps more impressive is the sea cave located on its western side. Only accessible during low tide, it’s a hearty hike not meant for everybody, but if you’re up for the challenge, the payoff is huge.   Looking for an easier trek? La Jolla boasts caves, coves, and tide pools (Coast Blvd.) that are more accessible. It’s another adventure best set for low tide, sans the hefty hike. Here, the magic is created during high tide when water is trapped in the rocks, creating fun-to-explore tide pools.

BALBOA Park

Balboa Park is one of those places tourist maps will send you, but it doesn’t take away from the beauty of this urban cultural park. The 100-acre San Diego Zoo (2920 Zoo Dr.) is located here, and it houses over 3,700 animals made up of more than 650 species and subspecies. This includes the giant panda, a rarity among zoos across the world.   Perhaps best known for its open-air exhibits, a concept it helped pioneer, the animal habitats emulate a more natural environment. See the animals from new heights, with a gondola ride through the trees, or stay on ground with a guided tour bus that covers 75 percent of the park. Better yet? Work off the calories of San Diego’s infamous grub by walking.    Once you’ve exhausted your zoopportunities, explore the rest of Balboa Park. Sixteen museums make up much of the cultural area. Where do San Diego locals like to eat? Depending on the meal, there are restaurants all over the city that offer everything from a quick bite, to a romantic multi-course meal. Check out these establishments to get a taste of the local scene. For the best Mexican food in the city, head to Juan Bertos Mexican Food (9530 Miramar Rd.), near the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Bite into a California burrito (packed with all the regular ingredients plus a handful of French fries), or gorge on cheese-loaded quesadillas complete with carne asada. The horchata is praise-worthy.    For a romantic night out, head to Bertrand at Mister A’s (2550 5th Ave.) Just minutes from downtown, guests take an elevator to the French-hued, American restaurant, giving new meaning to the term high-end. Whether seated inside or visiting the wraparound, outdoor patio, the location gives diners a view of San Diego’s illuminated skyline and best destinations.

LEARNING 

BY COPPER WILLIAMS

The opportunity to learn never diminishes. It’s a constant and incredible force that propels us toward an ever-changing and promising future. The more we know, the more our eyes open to a world of possibilities. But as we grow older, we sometimes lose that flicker of enthusiasm for the new and unknown. It becomes increasingly difficult to keep up in such a fast paced and ever-evolving society. Luckily, our love for knowledge needn’t ever decline. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at University of the Pacific strives to bring promising students back to the classroom. As DeeLynn Rivinius, Program Representative for OLLI@Pacific, explains, “OLLI@ Pacific serves as a source of good memories, intellectual growth, and fellowship with others. Our classes and lectures have a lasting impact on our members.” There’s no requirement such as having been a student of the school, or better yet, having gone to college at all. OLLI@Pacific has only one goal in mind: Connecting with seniors above the age of 50 and giving them the chance to take hold of each learning opportunity at their disposal with no pesky exams or final grades to detract from the experience.   With class sizes varying between 10 to 20 students, and 20 to 50 for lectures, students have a diverse range of like-minded peers to connect and converse with. Some of the university’s top instructors and retired personnel, and experts from across our community teach the courses held directly at the university or an off campus location in Stockton or Lodi. The program is always open to insightful suggestions from students for new courses, one being the Zen Photography class, taught by Glenn Williams.    Classes with OLLI@Pacific are broken down into semesters available in spring, summer, and fall. These semesters provide students with a variety of courses that will either meet throughout the semester, will meet two to three times, or will be 112

one-time learning opportunities. And classes are held throughout the day, ensuring that you’ll find more than one or two courses that will fit into your busy schedule.    Let your thoughts evolve with lectures on local, national, and worldwide topics. Participate in wellness courses to ensure that your body stays just as sharp as your mind. Enjoy literature discussions and writing exercises, hands-on visual art opportunities, and a plethora of technology courses aimed at keeping you up to date on the computer or its smaller, hand-held counterparts.

Musical Courses

Check out the musical or culinary inclined courses and leave your day’s lesson on a high note or with another notch in your belt. If you’re really feeling that sense of adventure, hit the road with your peers. OLLI@Pacific features numerous day trips involving both local destinations, excursions around California, and tours across our United States! “OLLI@Pacific is committed to maintaining the high level of learning opportunities and environments our members have grown accustom to over the years!” DeeLynn states. “OLLI@Pacific is also committed to identifying new learning opportunities and new innovative ways in which to deliver these learning experiences.”   Become an active member and realize how OLLI@Pacific opens up more than just the classroom. Enjoy free admission for two conservatory concerts that host the University Symphony Orchestra, the Pacific Jazz Ensemble, Resident Artist Series, and more. Check out several discounts with local and online businesses such as Haggin Museum, DeMarcus Brown Theatre, Take 5 Jazz Sessions with Valley Brew, and Microsoft or Apple products. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

Challenge yourself to step back into a world of limitless potential and register today. Annual memberships cost $30 and the semester registration fees vary from $25 to $55 according to your involvement with the university. Skirting the rippling edges of the main channel is the Delta Bistro, a delectable gem located in University Plaza Waterfront Hotel that provides its guests with a sample of some of Stockton’s culinary charm on each and every visit. With an equally exquisite view over the waterfront and Stockton Arena only a stone’s throw away, it’s the go-to destination for anyone looking for a night on the town in our portside city.    Delta Bistro’s menu has no specific theme or particular culinary genre it stringently follows. It’s true aim? To suck you in with its variety of succulent flavors. As Jeff Stogsdill, the Birstro’s Executive Chef, explains “My menu is not geared toward any style.

menu since 2010, guests are always stopping by before a big baseball game or Arena-based event. In fact, specials are almost a requirement when the Stockton Heat is home for a game. “We normally run specials on those nights, pregame buffets. If there’s hockey Saturday night we might do a nice tri-tip!”   It’s the passion for smiling faces and tasty food that helps spur Jeff into experimenting for his guests. “[We’ve got] culinary freedom. [We can] pretty much delve into anything that we want to do.” Being able to express their creative talents in the kitchen has brought incredibly popular dinner favorites to life. I’m just trying to put something, when people are traveling, that they can find surprisingly good inside Stockton. Something comforting [that] makes people happy.” This sort of thinking has brought both out-of-towners and locals alike back into the restaurant again and again.   But when you have such delicious menu options like the Bistro’s bruschetta, a freshly prepared appetizer of diced tomato, garlic, basil, and Parmesan, with balsamic on toasted slices of Genova bread, how can you not come looking for a second helping? And let’s not pass up an opportunity to talk about the Braised Lamb Shank, an entree so tender it’s ready to fall off the bone after being braised in vegetables and doused in an au ju sauce crafted from its own juices.   Being just off the water opens Delta Bistro up to 120

And that, in turn, lands you the perfect view of fireworks that flash across the skyline each Fourth of July, a holiday that Delta Bistro always plans a big BBQ bash for! “We let families come and enjoy it,” Jeff elaborates. “It’s kind of a BBQ Buffet. Employees love it. We draw in at least 500 people every year. Very family oriented. We’re super proud of it.”   Events have always been a key specialty of the hotel that goes hand in hand with the Bistro. And with Jeff’s culinary expertise on the

In the past, strawberries were a delicacy enjoyed by royalty alone. And yet they are now a common treat for families throughout the world.    The strawberry has had its share of limelight for generations as both a healthy snack and the ultimate dessert addition. A single cup can provide 29 percent of your daily value for Manganese, 12 percent of your Fiber, 9 percent of your Folate and 7 percent of your necessary Potassium. HARNEY LANE

winery From Grape to Glass 

Big name wineries that bottle and distribute vino around the globe aren’t hard to find in the Lodi appellation. It is, however, the smalllot estates that make this area special, and everyone experiences a glimmer of pride when they are the first to know about a local gem. Here in Lodi one of the best places to find a flavorful vino is Harney Lane, where small production, 100 percent estate-grown wines reign superior. Impress your friends with your knowledge of one of Lodi’s best wineries before word gets out.   At Harney Lane, the fruit that goes into making their one-of-a-kind, tasteful wines is all grown on-site. “We are proud to be 100 percent estate,” Co-owner Jorja Lerner says.   Originally a family farm, the owners took on a new venture when Kyle and Jorja Lerner, along with Jorja’s parents Kathy and George Mettler (who died in 2013), decided to branch out into wine production as a means of preserving their land. A total of less than 1000 cases were turned out in 2006, Harney Lane’s first year in the wine business, but they have since upped their supply to meet demand. Today, the winery bottles approximately 5000 cases annually, allowing locals to enjoy ample amounts of sophisticated wines while keeping its small production charm in tact. 124

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Perhaps the most notable aspect of its business model for true vino enthusiasts is that 95 percent of Harney Lane wine is sold at the winery itself. There’s a particular allure in sharing a bottle of zinfandel with someone special that wasn’t simply picked up at the store. The effort speaks volumes. Not to mention, it garners the purchaser a little wino-cred. “Our winery maintains a focus on handcrafted, award winning limited production wines,” Jorja explains. “With a small production, you rarely find our wines anywhere but at the winery itself.”    Located on Harney Lane in Lodi, the estate boasts “rustic elegance.” Not only can tasters step in to sip samples ($5 for a tasting session that is waived with wine purchase), they can also stay to enjoy an artisan cheese platter while ordering favorites by the glass. The estate that provides all of the ingredients needed to turn out award-winning old vine zins and tempranillos, also offers a warm and inviting space with plenty of room for relaxing under 80-year-old diodora cedar trees. Excellent customer service and a memorable experience are equally as important to the family of local growers.

The abundant supply of reds and whites promises something for everyone—from wellknown varietals like chardonnay to more obscure types such as albarino. Many will be available during Zinfest as the family pours at Lodi Lake on Saturday, May 14 and hosts a Zinfest Open House on Sunday, May 15 from 11 AM-5PM. INSIDER TIP: On your next visit, order the 2013 Tempranillo and 2013 Petite Sirah. “These are new vintages of Harney Lane favorites,” Jorja says. “In fact, these wines often sell out before we can release the next vintage.”

GO(sustainably) GREEN for ST. PATTY’S

And yet another reason why Lodi deserves its most recent recognition by Wine Enthusiast Magazine as Wine Region of the Year: Its commitment to and leadership among earth-friendly practices; most notably the formation of Lodi Rules™ in 2005 – California’s first 3rd party-certified sustainable winegrowing program. With 101 rigorous farming practice standards, Lodi Rules takes a comprehensive approach that goes well beyond just pest management to include water and air quality and community and employee wellbeing, among others. And just as the program’s winegrowers are held to high vineyard management standards, so are the wines made from those vineyards. For a bottle of wine to bear the Lodi Rules logo, it must be made up of at least 85% of wine grapes sourced from a vineyard certified under the program. This St. Patty’s Day, you can support your local winegrower and community by going sustainably green with one of these three Lodi wines:

ESTATE CRUSH 2013 BECHTHOLD VINEYARD LODI CINSAULT Take home your very own pot ‘o gold with this delicate, garnet-hued wine – one of the mere 5% of wines to walk away with a Double Gold Medal from the 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. At more than 7,000 entries yearly, the SFCWC is the largest competition of American wines in the world. Flavors of juicy strawberries and pomegranates and hints of spiced rhubarb make this wine a tasty match for traditional dishes like corned beef and cabbage, rack of lamb with herbs and shepherd’s pie. HARNEY LANE WINERY 2014 LODI ALBARIÑO Brimming with flavors of citrus blossom, green pear, pineapple and lemon zest, this bright and refreshing wine is 100% estate-grown and produced. Aging in 50% stainless steel and 50% neutral oak barrels provides your palate with the perfect balance of crisp acidity and soft creaminess. Clean, expressive mineral notes perfectly counteract the richness of dishes like fish and chips, smoked salmon and beer and cheddar soup. ($19) HarneyLaneWinery.com MICHAEL KLOUDA WINES 2014 BROKEN VINE LODI ZINFANDEL Named for winemaker Michael Klouda’s embarrassing experience of accidentally plowing over a prized 60-year-old Zinfandel vine in Lodi winegrower Bob Schulenburg’s west side vineyard after first moving to Lodi in 2009, this wine screams of raspberry and blueberry compote tinged with whiffs of sweet tea and dusty earthiness. Springy acidity is complimented by gentle oak tannin, the result of aging for 16 months in 2nd-year barrels. Enjoy this stunning wine alongside Irish stew, roast rib of beef or bangers and mash.
