“Our In-home personal demonstrations… include a free water analysis and recommendations based on their water quality,” says Alwi Ali, sales and marketing specialist for AQUAKLEEN Products, Inc.

2024 represents 45 years in the San Joaquin community for Hedy Holmes Staffing Services. The Stockton-based agency covers Sacramento, San Joaquin, Merced, and Fresno Counties and has been, and continues to be, one of the oldest and locally owned fullservice agencies in the region. The Central Valley offers a multitude of employment opportunities and the Hedy Holmes team stands ready to assist employers and employees alike.
The pandemic period brought change to the employment markets; remote-work, reduced hours, ever-changing hiring criteria, lockdowns, testing, etc. Things are now returning to pre-pandemic levels and Hedy Holmes Staffing is adjusting to the normalcy. An experienced team is standing by to assist employers and employees alike. Finding hard-to-fill positions through temp-to-hire and direct hire recruiting are this team’s specialty.
Hedy Holmes seized a unique opportunity in the late 1970s to change the face of staffing in our local region. With determination
and courage, she embarked on what has proven to be a journey that literally has put thousands of residents to work over the years. While Hedy remains active in the company, Tena Runyon, vice president of the organization, oversees the day-to-day operations. The company continues to operate through two-main channels— traditional staffing, which include temporary, and temp-to-hire positions, and professional services, which focus on placing skilled workers into administrative, middle-management, and executivelevel positions.
These two women are a tour-de-force of knowledge and experience in this field. Charity, faith, integrity, transparency, and perseverance is the foundation of this local agency that has proven longevity in the 209.

The Kitchen @ StoneBrier remains a staple in the community and is committed to offering the finest food and wine with an excellent food menu and stellar wine selections that continue to engage guests.
Regina “Gina” Bourez, catering/bar manager at The Kitchen @ StoneBrier says, “In 2024, Chef Shane and I will still be creating and hosting our pairings every other month, where we are keeping the tradition of showcasing amazing, exclusive wines all over the states and world, with him creating a unique dish that compliments the wine perfectly along with having the representatives join and tell the stories of the wines our guests are tasting.”
Paint and Sips are already in full swing, when guests get to enjoy a night of painting, hors d’oeuvres, and a glass of wine, which is included in a ticket purchase. “This year, we have also included having the winemakers or their head representatives of their wines featured here at the restaurant to have a table between Tuesday through Thursday during our dinner service for a free
tasting,” Gina says. “Chef Shane will also have a special dish for the service for guests to order that pairs with the wine.”
Keeping it local is important. Chef Shane Tracewell says, “We work with a couple farms around here that supply us with great produce. During the summer we lean on Golden Bear Ranches for heirloom tomatoes, stone fruit, and figs. The spring and fall we work closely with Honest Acre Farms for greens, root vegetables and various other ingredients. Year-round we source potatoes, squash, peppers, and asparagus from Zuckerman Farms.”
The Kitchen @ StoneBrier credits their growth and success to the partnerships they’ve built in the community, local farms, and businesses, along with their attention to details for banquets and catering.

Whether you’re in the market for a set of shiny new braces for your growing brood, or you have dreams of a straighter smile for yourself, Samra Orthodontics is here to help.
“We serve people, not patients,” Owner Mickey Samra, DDS, says. We truly believe our purpose is to make sure you live, smile, and laugh every single day - we just happen to straighten teeth.”
While the emphasis, of course, is on quality and results, Samra Orthodontics also focuses on making orthodontic care accessible. “I want to make sure people understand that orthodontic treatment should be reasonably priced and affordable for all people rather than some high priced item that only a few people can afford,” he says. And because orthodontics have an effect on whole body health, including mental health, it’s an important part of every person’s healthy living lifestyle and should therefore be within reach.
In addition to low prices, the office works with most insurance
companies and provides options for payment plans, etc. to help make orthodontic care a reasonable expense that won’t leave you broke.
Not every journey to a straighter smile is the same, and everyone has preferences when it comes to their care; Samra Orthodontics prioritizes flexibility to meet individual needs. “No matter the treatment option you choose, rest assured we will always treat you with kindness, respect, and excitement,” Mickey says. And they’ll do all of it while also utilizing top-notch technology, including digital impressions, to increase accuracy, comfort, and results.
Tibon’s Goju Ryu Fighting Arts and Supplies has been a pillar in the karate community since 1984, teaching the system of Karate known as Goju Ryu under the international organization of Goju Ryu Uchiage Kai. Starting with its Stockton location, the dojo now operates additional satellite karate school locations at Stockton GymStars, Modesto GymStars, Hiers Goju Ryu in Lodi, and United Bay Area Karate Club in San Jose.
Goju Ryu combines fighting traditions from both Okinawa Japan (Go) and China (Ju). Loosely translated, go means hard and ju means soft, resulting in a balanced style of fighting that is able to tow the line between direct and indirect fighting movements. “The mixture of the combined cultural fighting systems makes our style very affective for self-defense,” says Owner and Chief Instructor Gene Tibon. But while Tibon’s is one of the goto places for self-defense training, it’s equally important for competitive athletes. “Over the last 37 years we have developed over 450 gold medal national champions, 220 Pan-American karate champions, and had a Summer Games Olympic hopeful in Karate in 2021.”
In 2019, Tibon was awarded his eighth Dan Certification (an eighth degree black belt), which made him the second highest ranking senior in the Goju Ryu Uchiage Kai organization in the world. He’s also been inducted into 12 Martial Arts Hall of Fame
organizations including the Stockton Sports Hall of Fame and the A.A. Stagg High School Hall of Fame. “I’m now the Ambassador of Masters Hall of Fame, one of the most prestigious Hall of Fame organizations in the world,” Tibon says.
Community is also important to Tibon and his team. In addition to fundraising for the studio’s athletes to advance their careers and pay their way to competitions, Tibon’s has also had a heavy hand in raising money for children’s charities and other causes through benefit tournaments. The goal is to raise a future generation of modern-day samurais—because samurai means to serve.
Students who sign up at Tibon’s do so on a month-to-month basis, no contracts! All instructors are DOJ and FBI background certified clear. The dojo adheres to safety protocols to fight against COVID-19, and when students receive their black belts at Tibon’s Goju Ryu, they are internationally recognized and certified out of Japan with Goju Ryu Uchiage Kai, member of the Japan Karate Federation.

Lance began his journey in real estate as an appraiser back in 2000, but temporarily left the industry following the market crash. In 2015, a friend persuaded him to return, this time as an agent. “I resisted for the longest time because after dealing with agents as an appraiser I didn’t have much respect for [agents].” Despite initial reluctance due to a lack of respect for agents, Lance saw an opportunity to redefine the role. He embraced his friend's advice, realizing that as an agent, he could positively influence perceptions one client at a time.
Over the past six years, Lance has diligently worked to change the narrative, prioritizing client satisfaction, fostering positive relationships with fellow agents, and bringing his son along for the ride to learn the ins and outs of running this type of business and the value of having great communication skills. Dr. Manshadi knew from a young age that he wanted to be a physician. “During a complicated pregnancy and birth, competent doctors in Israel saved both my and my mother’s lives,” he explains. Today, he seeks to emulate the confidence of those doctors by saving lives, educating others, and truly honoring the Hippocratic Oath.
Named a top doctor by Castel Connolly, Dr. Manshadi began volunteering and administering EKGs at UC Davis Medical Center as a college student at the age of 18. There, he met Ezra Amsterdam, a teacher and mentor. “He instilled in me the love of cardiology,” he says. There was not only a love, but serious talent, as Dr. Manshadi dove deeper into the study—and with the ability to justify and analyze complex entities and categorize them, he excelled. “If your gift and passion are synonymous, you will be successful and happy.”
In May 2013 Manshadi Heart Institute welcomed patients with a simple yet profound mission: Improve the lives of patients through excellence in cardiovascular education, heart disease prevention, and the highest-quality treatment available. From prevention to intervention, the Institute offers a full spectrum of cardiac care.
Dr. Manshadi personally improves the lives of the general public, raising awareness of sudden cardiac death in athletes and donating his book proceeds to purchase and install AEDs in schools across the country. “It’s very important to know how to use and AED, and you never know when you’re able to save someone’s life,” he says. “When applied within first two minutes, there’s a 90 percent survival rate.”
In his free time, Dr. Manshadi enjoys coaching soccer and supporting a league he funds for young children.

It’s a family affair at Don Luis Mexican Restaurant, where the entire Rivera clan works hard to serve delicious and authentic Mexican meals from recipes prepared by their families and passed down through the generations—that’s the secret sauce to Chef and Owner Cuahtemoc (Cuate) Rivera’s success with the Stockton eatery. And unlike some restaurants, this familyowned operation sees Cuate and his family at the helm, all of whom are hands on—not only are the recipes their own, but they all work in the restaurant, serving meals alongside staff, and lending a hand in the kitchen. In addition to Cuate, his wife Alexandra Rivera is often spotted on-site as well as their five children Alex, Tito, Jesh, Abby, and Gio (and number six is on the way).
At Don Luis, Cuate makes a point of sourcing fresh ingredients from local suppliers whenever possible, meaning your meal at Don Luis doesn’t just support the Rivera family but other local families and businesses, as well. And the unique meals made in the Don Luis kitchen—think popular plates including the torta Cubana, three amigos fajitas, and a collection of sizzling soups sure to make your mouth water—come from the hand of Cuate
himself, a head chef who moved from Mexico City to Stockton in 1996 and explored European cuisine in 2011, bringing with him his worldly expertise. With so many items on the menu it can be hard to choose, but the tortillas may just be the real prize of the establishment. Homemade, fresh, and served warm, we recommend dipping them into one of the menu’s soups or the queso dip for extra flavor.
Don’t forget to wash down your poblano chile rellenos with a beverage from the full bar. Don Luis’ has become just as known for their over-the-top cocktail concoctions as they have their Mexican cuisine. No meal here is complete without one of the bar specialties, featuring everything from flavored margaritas and mojitos to decked-out Bloody Marys and Micheladas. Check out the seasonal drink menus for inspiration before you order.

Manteca Park Golf Course is fast becoming one of the top courses in the Central Valley for playability and value, and The City of Manteca is proud of its hometown course, which represents some of the best greens in the Valley.
Living up to its motto, ‘The Public Course with the Country Club Feel’, Director of Golf Jeff DeBenedetti says, “We treat our customers like family and we do what we can to exceed their expectations. All players of all ability levels are welcome and will enjoy their round of golf here.” It’s not only one of the most affordable courses in the area, but also one of the best quality.
Jeff and his team are embracing the idea of community at the course. A big part of the mission involves expanding junior golf in Manteca. Employees told Jeff they once left the city to play golf at the junior level because there wasn’t a local outlet. All of that has changed. Manteca Park hosts four junior programs to hit every caliber of player. And with Jeff at the helm—his last junior golf team won the junior’s PGA national championship—young golfers are in good hands.
The full facility is more than an 18-hole course. It also offers a driving range, golf carts, a chipping green, and a putting green,
plus a banquet hall, coffee shop, clubhouse, and full-service golf shop.
For those who haven’t seen the course since 2017, there was a significant re-design. The holes were renumbered to encourage a better game flow and a faster pace of play, plus a better last hole experience. What was once known as a slow course can now reasonably be played in just over four hours.
The course is committed to maintaining its high degree of play. The City of Manteca’s superintendent keeps the grounds looking fresh, the playing conditions top-notch, and the drainage running seamlessly. Condition-wise, Jeff says it’s one of the top courses in the San Joaquin Valley, and the prices give players the best value in the valley $33 on weekdays, ($38 on weekends to walk).
Perhaps the biggest perk, however, is the course location. “It’s right here in peoples’ backyard,” Jeff says.
Husband-and-wife team Steve and Jaime Smith are the faces behind the brand, turning out quality wings (and other fare) to local patrons in Stockton. Many know Steve most for his NFL career where he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, and then NFL Europe from 2001-2004. And it was that football party atmosphere that served as the launching pad for the thriving Stockton wing shop.
After years of serving up grub to friends while watching the game at their home in Oregon, Steve and Jaime ended up back in her hometown of Stockton. It’s then they decided their next game move would be an audible, switching gears from the stadium to the kitchen. Steve is the ultimate fry daddy, responsible for cooking up the fresh-never-frozen wings made to order. As a result, it may take up to 20 minutes to get your food, but the final product is worth the wait.
The duo came into the experience without any formal culinary experience, but that hasn’t stopped them from taking home five years of Best Wings awards from San Joaquin Magazine, cementing their place in the local culinary scene as the local faces of wings.
Other accolades include a spotlight on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri, and the need to upgrade their space
to a larger kitchen where they could meet the growing demands of both locals and an international clientele. Roadtrippers and visitors from across the world stop into Smitty’s based on reputation alone and Steve and Jaime can proudly say they’ve welcomed guests from Japan, Europe, and more.
Upgrading to a commercial kitchen and going from 49 seats to 123 allows even more wings to fly out of the kitchen. And while Steve may be the mastermind behind the meats, it’s Jaime who is responsible for curating the delectable dipping sauces customers rave about. “Everything we put on the table comes from our heart and our home,” Jaime says.
A recent menu expansion allows the eatery to offer cocktails to guests, but they are taking any changes slow as to not move away from what has made Smitty’s stand out. The beer-and-wine-only restaurant is now turning tricks behind the bar, serving up flavored mimosas and Micheladas to clientele, all while maintaining the neighborhood sports bar vibe that made it famous.

Salida Surgery Center isn’t just a family-owned dental practice, the office specializes in treatment for children, including those with special needs, who require general anesthesia.
After receiving their own degrees and jumpstarting careers in Atwater and Hemet, brothers Dr. Pankaj K. Patel and Dr. Shailesh K. Patel decided to go into business together. Pankaj earned his Dental Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine before continuing into anesthesiology, completing a residency in dental anesthesiology at Loma Linda University of Southern California and a anesthesiology fellowship at Riverside County General Hospital.
Shailesh went to school locally and graduated from the University of The Pacific, School of Dentistry in 1992. After that he opened two private practices before going into business with his brother.
“What sets us apart from others is that we are a family business where the owners provide patient care along with other doctors,” Dr. Pankaj Patel says. “We have earned our referring colleagues' respect and confidence in providing excellent care to our patients with a passion for almost 20 years.”
Working with niche clientele has helped the brothers excel, providing care to those who may otherwise struggle to find help. They also stay up to date on new technologies and belong to local community dental societies to elevate their care practices. The ultimate goal is better oral care for children and special needs patients that struggle to find specialized care.

Pixie Woods opened to much fanfare on June 12, 1955. Modeled after Fairyland in Oakland, there was a lot of excitement surrounding the children’s park, a place created to enrich the lives and spark the imaginations of those both young of age and young at heart. On opening day, the tickets cost 10 cents for children and 15 cents for adults. And while prices have certainly risen ahead of the park’s 70th season, continued community support has kept this City of Stockton gem accessible. Leading up to the big reveal, a lot of enthusiasm from the community and several fundraising arms made the
creation of Pixie Woods possible. The City Council offered three acres of Louis Park for the project as well as $112,000 of matched funds. “Organizations in town raised money with fashion shows, charity balls, and celebrity performances,” says Yvonne Sampson, Pixie Wood’s current director.
The initial concept was to include 15 sets from famous fairytales and nursery rhymes using live animals, play areas, and colorful buildings to bring it all to life. The park was named by 8-year-old Jonathon Bragdon from Stockton during a contest.
made so much noise that the neighbors didn’t get much sleep those first days either.”
Opening day marked the first time children crossed through Pixie Wood’s iconic rainbow gates, unleashing families unto a world fueled by imagination and a Peter Pan’s air of never grow up. “There were special pixie songs performed by Patty Ardell, puppet shows directed by Mrs. George Froehlich, a guest appearance by Mr. Crispie the magical clown, and folk dancing by the Junior Shindiggers. Mrs. Ann Bedinger told stories, Leon Pratt did pastel sketchings, free ice cream and balloons from Arden Farms were distributed by a 7’7” giant Texas cowboy,” Yvonne says.
In just one week, over 16,000 people visited and 19 birthdays were celebrated in the Alice in Wonderland party area. Three months later, 72,000 people had experienced the magic of Pixie Woods.
The unbelievable success of the park was perhaps the biggest fantasy come true of all and it sparked continued development. Since Pixie Woods closes each winter, that time is used for improvements including four new attractions added the first year. In 1957 the first pixie boat attraction launched but sunk the following year and in 1960 the Jester House and Pixie Woods Mine Train were added. In 1966, a 30 jumping horse Merry-Go-Round was added and in 1992, the newest iteration of the train and tunnel debuted. “Each attraction was the direct result of a community donation,” says Yvonne.
Sonny and Cher were the park’s first celebrity guests and performed a concert at University of the Pacific to raise money for the park in 1971. They visited with their daughter Chastity and celebrated her second birthday, paying for all of the trip expenses on their own.
As the new millennium approached, focus shifted to interactive attractions such as a climbing pirate ship and the still popular Water Dragon. Later, bronze statues of children playing were added in an effort to bring art to Pixie Woods. Event fundraising is still a large part of sustaining Pixie Woods.
“Community leaders saw a need for a park devoted to the imaginations and energies of young children,”
Mary Falls French, who had a heavy hand in bringing Pixie Woods to life, recants some of the funnier anecdotes ahead of opening the iconic park. “When the ‘three little pigs’ arrived, it was decided that she would take them to her apartment. They didn’t like that too much and she didn’t get sleep for a number of days until their ‘home’ was completed,” Yvonne shares. She also encountered Billy Goat Gruff, who chased her around the park.

“Pixie Woods continues to thrive because of the dedication of many hardworking individuals and a generous, supportive community,” Yvonne says. “For 70 years Pixie Woods has been providing entertainment for children of all ages. It has come a long way from a dream from a group of visionary community volunteers to the dreams that await each child just beyond the Rainbow Gates.”

Provides high-quality acute and chronic dialysis (kidney) treatment services. The Dialysis Center is patient-centered which focuses on holistic and integrated care.
Medical offices exist to care for people’s health, and while quality patient care remains the focus at Kaiser Permanente and their offices in Stockton, Manteca, and Tracy, they are also insistent on prioritizing the health of the planet.
The idea is that a healthy environment impacts the health of a community. So, KP has completed projects over the last year to add solar panels, EV charging stations, and drought-tolerant landscaping to many of their locations. In fact, in 2020, KP was the first U.S. health care organization to achieve Certified Carbon Neutral status. They received the designation after eliminating the organization’s 800,000-ton annual carbon footprint, which equates to the same impact as taking 175,000 cars off the road.
Climate change has become a major focus of the nation’s largest integrated,
nonprofit health system in large part because of the health issues that arise from climate change. With a focus on sustainability, they are helping the planet as well as the health of everyone who lives on it.
It is KP’s innovations in energy use, construction and building strategies, supply chain, food systems, finance, and clinical practice that have one of the biggest impacts on community health, and changing how the healthcare giant powers facilities, purchases food, medical supplies and equipment, and manages waste aids them in achieving their bigger goals one step at a time.
Every action has the ultimate goal of improving health conditions for individuals. Severe weather events and wildfires connected to climate change can have life-threatening repercussions including respiratory ailments like asthma, heat-related illnesses, physical and psychological injuries, and increased rates of infectious disease spread.
Much of KP’s plans for sustainability and climate support relay back to the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Decarbonizing the U.S. Health Sector, as well as partnerships with local nonprofits that champion environmental stewardship in the health care industry. KP is also a member of RE100, California Health Care Climate Alliance, Ceres’ Connect the Drops, and other climate leadership initiatives.

BY ANGELA RUDOLPHOffering community camaraderie, cultural food, refreshing beverages, live music, and interactive activities, the City of Stockton presents the 2024 El Concilio California Cinco de Mayo Multicultural Weekend Festival. The free annual Cinco de Mayo Festival is bigger than ever this year. Held in Stockton from May 4 to 5, this is the Central Valley’s largest Cinco de Mayo festival. And for the first time, it will be a two-day event. Each day of the festival is jampacked with activities meant to honor
the history and culture of Mexico and Latin America. Bringing together families with healthy activities like the fun run, a parade, and lucha libre wrestling, creative activities like face painting, music performances, classic cars, folklórico dance competitions, craft merchants, and scrumptious traditional food from more than 28 expert vendors, the goal of the festival is to increase civic and community involvement.
There is something for everyone to enjoy during the two days of celebration. On the first day, the event kicks off with a family fun run at 9 AM and will have activities and performances until 8 PM. On Sunday, the celebration continues with the Cinco de Mayo Parade through downtown Stockton at 10 AM with festivities continuing until 6 PM. The festival will have stage and concert shows beginning at noon each day, running through the end of the day’s activities.
The Fiesta Marketplace Mercado offers an opportunity for visitors to browse through
stalls and displays, discuss history with local vendors, and learn about community resources and services.
The 28 food vendors will serve up delicious cuisine from across Central and South America including aguas frescas, churros, plátanos, quesadillas, tacos, tamales, sopapillas, ceviche, elote, and more. Delight your tastebuds by sipping on some horchata, a virgin michelada, or some Mexican beer. American food favorites will also be available.
El Concilio California has been hosting its Cinco de Mayo Multicultural Festival for over 25 years as an uplifting event for Stockton and Central Valley residents. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla that resulted in Mexico’s military victory over Napoleon III in 1862. Today, many honor the anniversary with traditional Hispanic cultural activities, food, dancing, and music, and for a lot of folks in the Central
Valley, this festival has become part of their family tradition. It’s a way to not only celebrate a victory of the past but to forge new friendships and foster bonds celebrating diversity that unite us all. With the mouthwatering aromas of fresh cultural foods, the sounds of traditional music, and the sights of colorful dancers and displays filling attendee’s memories, this is more than a fun weekend activity—It’s a way to create lasting memories that will be cherished for years to come.
The Cardiothoracic program at Dameron Hospital is thriving, bringing a high level of cardiac and cardiothoracic treatment to patients in San Joaquin County. The program services all organs in the thorax including the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other chest organs, and now that a second cardiothoracic surgeon has joined the program, it is staffed 24/7, 365 days per year.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROGRAM INCLUDE:
• Access to breakthrough clinical care and research programs.
• Cardiac and cardiothoracic surgeries that result in less pain and shorter recovery times.
• Fewer physical restrictions after surgery (e.g., patients can drive and lift objects during the recovery process)
The program owes a lot of its success to a dedicated and experienced staff. “We want to provide excellent care and give evidence-based practice… to all of our patients,” says Tamra Tracy, a registered nurse and the cardiovascular
service line manager at Dameron Hospital. In order to achieve that, all of the departments that feed the cardiovascular service line staff highlevel employees.
Two surgeons are at the helm of the program. Dr. Gamal Marey is double board certified in both general and cardiothoracic surgery. Under his belt he has six meaningful medical recognitions and is associated with 11 professional societies. He joins long-time cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon Dr. Minghui Liu, who boasts more than 30 years of experience and more than 5,000 complex cardiac, thoracic, and vascular procedures performed.
The surgeons are supported by a specialty clinic offering short wait times to get in with a specialist (five days on average), a STEMI center, a cardiac catheterization lab, an ICU, and of course the operating room staffed with perfusionists and anesthesiologists. “I’ve never worked with such an incredible group of people,” Tamra says.
WITH THE SUPPORT OF THESE ENTITIES AND TWO SOUGHTAFTER SURGEONS IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY, THE CARDIOTHORACIC PROGRAM AT DAMERON HOSPITAL PERFORMS A RANGE OF PROCEDURES, INCLUDING:
• Advanced coronary grafting techniques (i.e., coronary artery bypass grafting or CABGs)
• Surgery for coronary artery disease
• Tumor removal
• Arrhythmia surgery
• Aortic valve repair and replacement
• Ventricular Remodeling
• Mitral valve repair and replacement (including complex repairs)
• Structural heart defect repair
• Lung surgery for cancer
When Hopey Jackson was just 7 years old, she lost her father suddenly—the result of a car accident in 2011. At a young age she began her own grief journey, often dealing with emotions too big for her young age. “Although I couldn't fully comprehend the gravity of the situation, one thing became abundantly clear—I wasn't alone in my sorrow,” Hopey says.
She describes her father as a community man and a dedicated father, a “constant presence not only in our lives but also in the lives of our friends.”
Hopey, now 20, alongside her brother Bobby, 23, and sister Jamison, 16, have since started the Jackson 3 Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping others who have lost a supportive family member through emotional and financial support. Their superpower is their empathy and their
unfortunate ability to understand what these children are going through. “Growing up without a father figure was challenging, and we understand firsthand the emotional and financial struggles families face after such a loss,” Hopey says.
“This cause is more than just a charitable endeavor; it's a way to honor my father's memory and turn our pain into purpose.”
“To fulfill our mission, we collaborate with numerous agencies to provide comprehensive support and comfort to children and families throughout their lifetime of grieving,” Hopey explains. This includes more than immediate bereavement support, instead offering continued care throughout the children’s lifetime. In their father’s memory, care is extended to those who have lost an engaged parent or family member that was also dedicated to community.
To be considered for services, a
referral must be sent to the foundation either from the family themselves, community leaders, friends, family, or nonprofit organizations.
Over time, families that come to the J3F can receive myriad of services from help with educational expenses to counseling referrals to personal connection.
“We empower [children] to forge ahead, rebuild, and thrive in the face of adversity on this transformative journey,” Hopey says.
“The Jackson 3 Foundation strives to be a beacon of hope for those who have lost a parental figure.”

here are two types of cherries produced in the United States each year: sweet cherries and tart cherries, and California is the second-highest producing state of sweet cherries with a production total of over 55,000 tons of cherries weighed in 2022. There are over 600 cherry farmers in Central California who cultivate over 50 different varieties of cherries. So, it’s easy to see why the region celebrates them each year with a festival in Linden.
Cherries contain melatonin and can help reduce jet lag and promote healthy sleep patterns. They also possess anti-inflammatory properties, contain antioxidants, and harbor anthocyanins, which can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. These health benefits make it easy to say “Yes!” to cherries!
Linden, California celebrates cherry season with the Linden Cherry Festival established in 1939, a testament to the area’s longstanding history with this delectable fruit.
This year, the festival’s theme “Linden Cherries Salutes our Military” will honor all branches of the military. The festival begins on May 18 at 10 AM with a parade including classic cars and floats. The festival doors will open at 11 AM at Linden Elementary. Activities include three live bands throughout the day, an array of food vendors, a cherry pie eating contest (with the fastest finisher claiming victory), an appearance by the Cherry Queen and her court, plus a craft and resource fair, and of course, farm-fresh cherries
The parade runs from 10-11 AM and features floats, marching bands, classic cars, and the recently crowned Cherry Queen with her court.
This annual classic car show has about 100-130 cars to check out.
Contestants line up with a pre-selected portion of cherry pie in front of them. Without using their hands, the contestants must eat the pie, and the first one to finish wins. To keep it fair, there are four age groups for kids and adults.
The very first San Joaquin County Fair was held in 1857, and since then a lot has changed. However, the 2024 Stockton event is committed to fueling nostalgia and restoring the wonderment county fairs once offered.
The goal, according to Chief Executive Officer Daniel Castillo, is to create an event that offers all of the big fair attractions such as rides and food but with a distinct Central Valley slant. “We want our fair to be uniquely San Joaquin,” he says.
To achieve that goal, this year’s event has added a gala dinner to kick off the festivities on Thursday, May 30. The event will champion the culinary excellence in the county and the importance food plays locally. There will also be a wine and beer walk on Saturday and Sunday from 2-6 PM, a separate ticketed event within the fairgrounds that will bring more than 15 wineries and breweries together in an extended beer garden atmosphere. Lastly, the grand stands concerts welcome headliners that appeal to the community bringing 80’s hit girl group The Mary Jane Girls and West Coast hip-hop star Too Short to the stage. The entertainment will be rounded out with local bands My Soul to Keep and Claudette King, B.B. King’s daughter.
Another fair classic coming back in full force this year is animal showcases brought to life by San Joaquin AgFest and including everything from breeding shows and milking demonstrations to goats in costume. Art will also be on display with works from students and adults thanks to partnerships with The Catalyst and Hatch Workshop. The San Joaquin County Office of Education will offer robotics demonstrations as one of approximately 100 booth options across the fairgrounds.
Of course, the food and rides will also be there, as well as free circus acts. Kids day keeps the event accessible, offering free admission for those 12 and under on Friday. Stocklandia is bringing a selection of food trucks and vendors to show off what the local food community has to offer. “Food is a main focus always for fairs,” Castillo says.

While it may be uncomfortable, a certain level of anxiety is unavoidable and normal in the interactions and stresses of everyday life. In some cases, such anxiety can even be a good thing, challenging you and pushing you to excel. It’s only when anxiety develops into an exaggerated, irrational reaction and fear of everyday stress that it can become crippling.
Anxiety tolerance is dependent on both the extremity of the instigating situation, as well as one’s existing mental and emotional state. Are you able to approach anxiety head-on, recognize it, and fight it? Or do you feel constantly overwhelmed and collapse in the throes of a panic attack?
Everyday stress is bad enough, but what do you do when it’s compounded by some catastrophic event? Completely unexpected disasters like tsunamis, earthquakes, school shootings, and bombings are sudden, unexpected, and overwhelming. It’s impossible to prepare for them, and can be just as difficult to handle afterward. There is no “normal” way of responding to such events. After the initial shock and denial has subsided, feelings and reactions can run the gamut, from anger to depression to fear. Such feelings can come up right away or be delayed, even years afterward. Some people, after an initial horrified response, are able to eventually move on without further complications, while others toil on for years with their tortured emotions.
The extent of one’s loss, their general ability to cope, and the presence of any coinciding trauma tend to determine their reaction to catastrophe. Accepting that they’re having difficulties and asking for support from friends, family, support groups, or a professional can help restore one’s emotional balance before it becomes chronic and debilitating.
The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) has compiled a list of coping mechanisms to help relieve anxiety and stress:
• Take a time-out. Practice yoga, listen to music, meditate, get a massage, or learn relaxation techniques. Stepping back from the problem helps clear your head.
• Eat well-balanced meals. Do not skip any meals. Keep healthful, energy-boosting snacks on hand.
• Limit alcohol and caffeine, which can aggravate anxiety and trigger panic attacks.
• Get enough sleep. When stressed, your body needs additional sleep and rest.
• Exercise daily to help you feel good and maintain your health.
• Take deep breaths. Inhale & exhale slowly.
• Count to 10 slowly. Repeat, and count to 20 if necessary.
• Do your best. Instead of aiming for perfection, which isn’t possible, be proud of however close you get.
• Accept that you cannot control everything. Put your stress in perspective: Is it really as bad as you think?
• Welcome humor. A good laugh goes a long way.
• Maintain a positive attitude. Make an effort to replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
• Get involved. Volunteer or find another way to be active in your community, which creates a support network and gives you a break from everyday stress.
• Learn what triggers your anxiety. Is it work, family, school, or something else you can identify?
• Write in a journal when you’re feeling stressed or anxious, and look for a pattern.
• Talk to someone. Tell friends and family you’re feeling overwhelmed, and let them know how they can help you. Talk to a physician or therapist for professional help.
Keep in mind that professional help is not an admission of weakness. Rather, it is a proactive way of getting back on track once you realize that whatever else you’re doing on your own does not appear to actually be working to alleviate anxiety.
What many people fail to realize (due to denial or simply being too close to the problem) is that anxiety can grow into much more serious psychological problems, called anxiety disorders. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) results from repeated, intrusive and unwanted thoughts, often accompanied by ritualized behavior to counteract such thoughts. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is caused by a particularly distressing or traumatic event, often resulting in recurring nightmares and/or flashbacks and unprovoked anger.
Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is a persistent fear of situations in which one is exposed to possible scrutiny by others. Panic Disorder is a sudden, uncontrollable attack of terror that can manifest itself with heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, and feeling out of control. Without any apparent instigation, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by excessive anxiety and worry that lasts for at least six months, accompanied by other physical and behavioral problems. These are just a few of the serious manifestations that anxiety can take. Fortunately, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, professional treatment for such disorders has resulted in substantial improvement or recovery in 90 percent of cases. Treatment for anxiety disorders can involve either medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SRNIs), certain anti-depressants, and muscle relaxers have been proven effective in relaxing the mental and physical symptoms of anxiety. Meanwhile, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can change one’s debilitating thoughts and behaviors by identifying, addressing, and, finally, changing them. By learning how to cope, alone or with the assistance of others, anxiety will still remain a necessary evil of your daily life, but it won’t control your life any longer.

It may be easy to think that every hospital is a trauma center, but that’s not exactly true. To be considered a verified trauma center, a hospital must meet specific criteria to prove their capability to treat trauma as well as their institutional performance. The rules are outlined by the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma.
“SJGH is the only verified and designated Trauma Center in San Joaquin County,” says Katrina Gomes, a registered nurse and deputy director of trauma services at SJGH.
Trauma refers to injuries caused by external forces, including motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults, etc., which require immediate medical attention. Often times these traumas are life threatening. SJGH’s team of trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, specialty-trained trauma nurses, ICU nurses, emergency room nurses, respiratory therapists, radiology
technicians, and other employees provide around-the-clock care.
“We also provide surgical specialty services in trauma, neurosurgery, vascular, thoracic, orthopedic, [and] anesthesia that are on call at all times,” Katrina says.
The comprehensive part of the trauma center comes from the hospital’s ability to treat each trauma patient from the onset of their initial injury through to their final disposition. “Our Trauma Center provides critical services in a timely manner to patients who often need lifesaving measures,” Katrina explains.
In addition to treating members of the community in their times of need, San Joaquin General's Trauma Center stays involved through outreach activities including Stockton’s violence prevention
program, Stop the Bleed courses taught to local schools and businesses, car seat and bicycle safety courses, Every 15 Minutes in partnership with the California Highway Patrol, several balance and fall prevention lectures, and ATLS and TNCC courses taught at the hospital by members of the trauma department.

Post-acute care functions as a bridge between the hospital and home and can relieve the burden on family members and loved ones to provide a high level of care. As a patient is recovering from an acute illness such as pneumonia, injury, or surgery such as a knee replacement, they need extra support and that’s exactly what post-acute care facilities offer.
“There’s a new baseline after the patient leaves the hospital,” says Mon Dizon, director of business development and clinical review at Creekside Center in Stockton, a 75bed facility. “Post-acute care gives family members and loved ones time to prep the environment the patient will return to at home. We help
them plan ahead of the discharge and figure out whether they’ll need home help or to find a caregiver.”
Often what happens is a patient will get discharged from the hospital and then return right away because they’re ill-equipped to handle issues such as a spike in blood pressure.
“Post-acute care mimics what the hospital provides,” Mon says. “We have nurses on staff and we already have a record of a patient’s vitals, their as-needed medications, and anything else they require so the patient doesn’t have to go back into the hospital.”
Care facilities such as Creekside also offer more casual environments than hospitals where patients can wheel around the hospital, push their walkers, and socialize as they
are recuperating or regaining their strength. They also have access to business office managers, and people such as the director of nursing if they have questions about their care. “We have an intimate setting for healthcare where everyone is on a first-name basis,” Mon says. “Everyone knows everyone else.”
For anyone considering a postacute care center, they should have an open mind, according to Mon. “Meet with the facilities you’re interested in, not just the ones close to home because you have to remember, this is temporary,” he says. “If it takes an extra five minutes to drive to a facility that has better reviews, it’s worth it. Put the health and safety of your loved ones or yourself first and foremost.”
Creekside Center is a skilled nursing facility located in Stockton, CA. Our center has an attractive warm atmosphere in a neighborhood setting. Patients and family can stroll the beautiful courtyards and sit in the lounge by the fire. At Creekside Center, we offer select menus and snacks in dining rooms with a garden setting. The facility offers in-house therapy 7 days a week in our Rehab Recovery Suites. All care is patient-centered and promotes independence The goal is to return our patients to good health and spirit.

In his role at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Dr. Mann treats patients both in the hospital and in an outpatient clinic for various types of addictions, not limited to drugs and alcohol. “There is an addiction medicine consult service available in the hospital… to see patients and provide medications that can help in staying sober,” Dr. Mann explains. Addiction treatment can begin in many places within St. Joseph’s. Some
therapy sessions and/or individual therapy.
patients come into the emergency room and are admitted for primary psychiatric diagnoses coupled with substance use disorder and/or withdrawal syndromes. The medical center uses a set of protocols to stabilize patients before sending them for followup care if needed.
Follow-ups often happen at Dr. Mann’s off-site clinic or at St. Joseph’s Behavioral Health Center. “I see patients in the hospital for anything from alcohol dependence to stimulants like methamphetamine and cocaine to opioids such as fentanyl and everything in between,” he says.
If a patient was referred to St Joseph’s Behavioral Center Outpatient Center for follow up in the Intensive Outpatient Program, their ongoing addiction treatment may include group
“Counseling is offered at the Outpatient Center for both substance use and other co-occurring psychiatric diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and others,” Dr. Mann explains.
Specific programs are offered to meet patient needs. These include an Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program for patients ages 13-17, outpatient services for those as young as 5 years old, skills teaching and process groups for adolescents and adults that include Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and individual therapy for those seeking one-on-one care for depression, anxiety, marital issues, post-traumatic stress, parenting, and life skills..

Whether you were blessed with 20/20 vision or dubbed “four eyes” as a child, you’re vision is likely to change once you hit 40. Presbyopia, or blurred near vision, is considered inescapable even if you’ve never experienced vision issues, or are nearsighted.
No need to worry, as presbyopia is widespread and considered perfectly normal. As Dr. Joseph Zeiter Jr. of Zeiter Eye Medical Group explains, “If you notice you have to hold a menu or cell phone at arm’s length to see clearly, then this is likely the change that is occurring in you as well.”
So what causes this change? It’s an age related process that differs from other optical issues like farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism—which are factors related to the shape of your eyeball or genetic and environmental factors. “Unfortunately as with all things,
as we get older the lens suspended in the middle of our eye will begin to undergo changes,” Dr. Zeiter Jr. explains, “The lens begins to become more stiff, and it becomes unable to change into a sphere. When this happens people notice difficulty in seeing objects up close.”
Treatment options are aplenty and range from cheap fixes like over the counter readers that can be purchased at a drug store and worn only when needed, designer frames with progressive addition lenses, no line bifocal lenses (lenses with to point of focus), and contact lenses, to surgical options. “People often say they don’t want to wear the glasses because they don’t want to become dependent on them,” Dr. Zeiter Jr. notes, “I say, give the body what it wants. Wearing readers does nothing bad or harmful to your eyes in any other way than to allow it to see things better.”
If you already wear contact lenses, your eye doctor can custom prescribe reading
glasses to be worn while also wearing your contacts, or you can opt for multifocal contact lenses, or monovision lenses— which offers one contact lenses in a distance prescription and another for near vision. In this instance, your brain learns to favor the appropriate eye and lens for what is needed—amazing!
To discover the best option for you, visit your optometrist or ophthalmologist to ensure there isn’t a larger issue at hand, and proceed from there. As Dr. Zeiter notes, presbyopia is a natural and unfortunately inevitable change, so there is no need to worry—but regular check ups to keep your peepers pleased is a must for all.
When sight is restored with cataract surgery, there are not many things in life more gratifying than sharing in that celebration with our patients.
- John H. Zeiter, M.D.Wine is a vice—often used as a treat at the end of a long day, or a splurge. But wine, especially red wine, could be keeping you healthy. Recently linked to impressive health benefits, the evidence keeps piling up. Too much, of course, is never good. However, too little doesn’t stack up either. According to science, moderate wine drinking is just what the doctor ordered.
It’s good for your heart. Wine has cardioprotective benefits. A nightly glass of red won’t replace the need for a healthy diet and balanced exercise routine, but it could be the extra boost your heart needs. Moderate red wine intake has been linked to reduced mortality caused by heart health issues as well as limiting heart damage after a stroke. We have the antioxidants found in wine to thank, especially resveratrol.
IT IMPROVES CHOLESTEROL.
Scientific studies have shown that moderate consumption of red wine increases good cholesterol (HDL) and lowers bad cholesterol (LDL).
WINE KEEPS THE MIND SHARP. Alzheimer’s Disease has no known cure, but researchers have found that downing a glass of red wine now and again could help keep the illness at bay. It’s even been suggested as treatment because of resveratrol’s role as a neuroprotectant and anti-inflammatory.
RED WINE HELPS MANAGE DIABETE s. For a disease that comes with a long list of foods and drinks you can’t have, it sure is nice to see something as delicious as red wine in the “can have” column. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that red wine helped to slow glucose traveling through the small intestine, preventing the dangerous sugar spike diabetes sufferers experience.
IT AIDS IN WEIGHT LOSS. Wait, what? I thought drinking alcohol helped pack on the pounds. As it turns out, piceatannol, a compound found in grapes and other fruits, destroys fat cells during cell development.
We live in a region ripe with quality reds, so grab a local bottle and drink to health!

apa Valley— home to more than 400 wineries, including 90 urban tasting rooms, this 30-mile stretch of California has always been known for one thing. However, whether you’re embarking on a sober lifestyle or simply want to enjoy more in between your tastings, there’s a whole world of adventure to uncover outside of the vineyards, or at least without a glass of wine in your hand. Read on for our approach to a weekend escape in wine country without a focus on the one export we’ve all come to expect: the wine.
Where you stay matters more when you plan to spend a significant amount of your vacation on site. Instead of flitting off early to catch first call at a local winery, enjoy a slow morning at Meritage. The expansive campus is home to two distinct hotels—Meritage Resort and Spa and Grand Reserve at the Meritage including a world-class spa that will have you ahhhing through the weekend.
What better way to begin your morning than with a massage and facial? The spa here is located in a cave, making it a perfect fit in Napa Valley. From the second you step through the grand doors, you’re transported to a world where tranquility is top priority. And the treatments offered are extensive whether you’re looking to loosen your muscles or refresh your face. Regardless of what you book, the emphasis is on igniting all of your senses from the infused citrus water placed in your hand when you walk through the door to the aromatherapy infused into each treatment room. A Calm Morning Body Treatment—a head-to-toe exfoliation and
wrap infused with a synergistic trilogy of spearmint, bergamot mint, and patchouli—is our first choice of the day, but we wouldn’t shy away from indulging in a Sculpting Facial either, designed to help your youthful years reemerge.
When you’re not at the spa, sink deep into an azure pool heated to 80 degrees F where you can take lunch in a cabana and escape any loud hotel guests of the younger variety thanks to an adults-only experience. You also won’t want to miss the rustic Italian Olive & Hay, featuring farm-to-table Italian-inspired cuisine with a touch of local Napa Valley ingredients. The American Wagyu New York Strip is all kinds of tender, served with a fiscalini cheddar mousse and hasselback potatoes, while the rigatoni with lamb ragu melts in your mouth, served alongside grilled broccolini.
The rest of the property features manicured walking paths and appointed guest rooms with available room service to make your stay every bit as magical as you could desire. It’s safe to say that with a place this grand, you won’t even miss the vino.
If you’re not indulging in balloon glasses expertly filled with famed Napa Valley cabernet, your palate doesn’t have to go without. Instead, focus your attention on the food. Overall, the vibe here is laidback luxury with a local touch.
The Grove at Copia recently changed hands, and in the fingertips of Chef Deborah Mullin, the New American restaurant is thriving. The menu is rich with local ingredients, including many grown from the onsite garden (the restaurant is part of the Culinary Institute of America campus) that make even the heartier meals feel fresh. While Copia offers food to fuel you throughout the day, it’s the brunch that has captured our stomachs and left a mark we won’t soon forget. The detail poured into each dish is impressive, from the garden greens and floral salad topped with a lemon vinaigrette to the BLT served on homemade mixed-grain
If you’re not abstaining, there are tasting rooms on site. Those not drinking can wander through The Village to find gourmet groceries, a food truck, and more, while oenophiles can partake in sips from Trintas Cellars, Bubbles & Bloom, Gen 7 Wines, and Anarchist Wine Co. all without leaving the resort.
Terra Spa Meritage Food & Wine Centersourdough focaccia bread, boasting flavors of brownsugared bacon. The sides of herbed potatoes don’t disappoint; what feels like a simple side dish is somehow just as exquisite as the main course.
Another option for a laid back meal that doesn’t skimp on the sophistication of the region is Bounty Hunter Wine Bar & Smokin’ BBQ. A BBQ joint may not sound like a must-stop in wine country but believe us when we say you won’t want to miss it. For dinner, you can dig into a prime rib or grub on smoked wings and beef brisket alongside a collection of craft brews. If you’re familiar with the restaurant of the same name in Walnut Creek, you’ll likely recognize the décor here, but the menu is completely different. If you really want to keep it casual, make your reservation for Downtown Joe’s. Just like the name suggests, this long-running casual spot focused on burgers and house-brewed beers is located in the heart of Downtown Napa. Stop in and make yourself part of the action by grabbing a seat at the bar—that often
gets rowdy on weekends— or head upstairs where you can dine in a more traditional atmosphere. Downtown Joe’s is also known for hosting events and outings if you’re looking for a way to spend your after hours in Napa.
The quaint downtown shops bring character, and who doesn’t like to don a great scarf or replace their wine glasses with treasures sourced from a faraway place?
Calistoga offers a quaint downtown littered with shops boasting wares from wine accessories to locally made garments. Step into Stix & Stones Gallery for fine gifts or Blackbird of Calistoga for home goods. There are so many shops lining Lincoln Avenue, we hardly need to tell you where to go. And lastly, of course, there is Oxbow Public Market. While food and drink permeate much of the area, cute shops and little wares are sold in many of the establishments, making it a good spot for picking up gifts and souvenirs.
The Grape Escape, located in an off-the-beaten-pathbut-not-too-far strip mall brings escape rooms to the city. There are several rooms available so you can complete more than one on
Lucky for you, there are also plenty of tasting rooms available on the same stretch of road in Calistoga. Maria Concetto Winery is our suggestion for a stopover in part because of its collection of delicious, smooth and robust vinos and also partly because there’s nowhere else in wine country that a robot sommelier will complete your tasting for you. Noticeable from the window, the machine oozes personality and even dances to the French tunes streaming out of the store. If you sit down to taste with him, he’ll pour your wine, replace your glasses, and even ask for a tip. The other experiences here are almost as cute, including a delicious caviar and wine pairing.
In addition to the tasting opportunities at Sterling Vineyards, Calistoga is home to plenty of other wineries worthy of your time. We especially recommend Frank Family Vineyards, just minutes from Sterling. This well-known wine label sells their most recognized bottles and more at the rustic red tasting room.
your stay, and the rooms are decorated to the nines. There’s plenty of character and special effects in each room, which makes the experience about more than puzzles. Recently taken over by new owners, the focus is on developing the rooms into some of the best in the region. They are each rated by difficulty so if you’re a newcomer, you still have a good chance of making your way out. If you’re there for the theatrical value, book Razum.
In Calistoga, Sterling Vineyards is, yes, first a winery, but it’s the refurbished gondola that tends to draw crowds. While the experience was first established in the 1980s, a fire took down
much of the infrastructure and the gondolas only reopened again last year. While there is an opportunity to grab wines along the self-guided tour of the higherground property, it’s not a must. The family-friendly adventure whisks guests from the parking lot to a 300-foot wooden volcanic knoll where the winery itself sits and charcuterie can be enjoyed on a patio offering 180 degree views of the land. The mountaintop tastings provide a few different experiences so peruse the options before settling on your adventure of choice.
Another wine-centric-but-not-required option is the Napa Valley Wine Train. There is, in fact, no need to drink wine at all. The focus is on the trek on a classic locomotive chugging through the countryside and the delicious American fare served to guests aboard. Evening jaunts are magical but daytime trips allow for more visuals out of the train windows. Some journeys are centered around tastings while others are seasonal. There’s even a murder mystery dinner.
When it’s not about wine, it can still be about beer. And perhaps beer should be the other liquor of choice when it comes to the Napa Valley—after all those rolling hills carry more
bounty than just grapes.
Fieldwork Brewing Company is located inside the Oxbow Public Market, one of Napa’s busiest areas. Here, the focus is on Detroit-style pizza and other small snacks. The Hail Mary is a personal favorite with flavors of garlic, Calabrian chili, and caramelized onion. The crust is perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside, and the top is finished with chunks of beer- braised chicken, cotija cheese, and honey. Add in a Caesar salad and soft, over-sized pretzel with a side of blended mustard, and you have yourself a feast! When it comes to beer, the brand’s citrus Pulp is perhaps most well-known, but the best way to sample the rotating offerings is by purchasing a flight, $18 for six brews, served on classy wooden boards.
Fieldwork may be a favorite, but it’s just the beginning of the beer scene in Napa. Hop Creek Pub, Trade Brewing, Armistice Brewing Company, and Downtown Joe’s (mentioned above) are all serving hoppy alternatives to the county’s supposed drink of choice.
If beer also isn’t hitting the spot, we suggest visiting the Napa Valley Distillery. Just down the road from Fieldwork and also in the Oxbow Market area, the spirits business focuses on rare artisanal offerings and bottled cocktails featuring unique ingredients. Or go to Wilfred’s Lounge, the area’s fun and festive tiki bar.
Are you a beer enthusiast with a penchant for freshly baked bread? Or maybe you are looking for a unique food and drink experience with friends? We’ve discovered Grainbakers—a company that hosts grain-to-bread classes at breweries across California, a collaborative experience teaching attendees to make artisan breads from spent grain while enjoying local brews. Grainbakers offers classes at local breweries for the breadmaking enthusiast, home brewers, beer geeks, and novice bakers. They recently held one at Morgan Territory in Tracy and another at Brethren Brewing Company in Manteca.

Spent grain is the byproduct (leftover) from beer making that is high in moisture, protein, and fiber, and is susceptible to microbial contamination. Basically, spent grain is leftover malt after a brewery has already used it to make beer. Malt is typically made from barley that has been soaked, sprouted, and dried.
The spent grain is then used as a raw material in the production of baked goods, and in this case artisan breads. Spent grain accounts for 85 percent of the brew industry’s waste but is often overlooked as a potential source of human nutrition. The fact that Grainbakers is advocating to use spent grain in the making of artisanal breads is a win for breweries, bakers, and health enthusiasts.
1. Contact a local brewery and ask if you can use some of their spent grain.
2. Be sure to pick it up and do your baking on the same day.
3. Gather all your ingredients and have some fun. You will need a few hours from start to finish.
INGREDIENTS:
1 c. warm water
4 tbsp. sugar
2 c. spent grain
1 package dry baker’s yeast
1 tbsp. salt
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
3 -3 ½ cups bread flour
Combine sugar and yeast with warm water in a large bowl. Let the yeast activate (it will begin to bubble). Add salt, oil, spent grain, and one cup of flour. Mix well. Stir in enough flour to make a stiff dough. Knead well on a well-floured surface and cover with a damp cloth. Let rise for one to two hours. Then, punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf or round. Place dough on a greased baking sheet, cover, and let rise until it has doubled in size. Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 degrees and bake for 10 more minutes or until nicely browned. Pro Tip: You can also add fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme or aromatics like garlic to enhance the flavor.
Grainbakers is a women-owned-and-operated company offering classes at small independent breweries. Guests purchase tickets from their website and show up to their local brewery. The start to end time is two hours, and you can enjoy a craft beer or two while learning breadmaking. Whether you mingle with friends, or make new ones, this creative baking experience will check all the boxes. At the end of the day, guests leave the brewery with a bread in its first rise and bake it as soon as they get home. The result: a chewy, doughy, and tasty loaf of spent grain bread made by you. And hopefully the knowledge to repeat the process at home.

At Big Belly Deli, sandwich lovers have found a home away from home. The deli, which celebrated its oneyear anniversary in February, has a loyal following thanks to a lengthy menu of craveable goodies, exceptional customer service, and quality ingredients.
The restaurant, located at the corner of Guild Avenue and Pine Street on Lodi’s commercial East side, is owned by Howard Hipsher. He purchased the deli, formerly known as Cut the Mustard, from his old friend Troy, who owned the business for 13 years, and rebranded the establishment to Big Belly Deli. The mix-up is complete with a fun new logo featuring Howard himself holding a hearty sandwich and giving a happy thumbs up.
While the name has changed, much of what made the deli a raging success remains. They continue to serve up Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, known to many as the standard for quality sandwich building. They also dish up many of the restaurant’s signature sandwiches that have kept diners happy for over a decade. Plus, Howard bakes the bread fresh daily.
A community favorite is the Godfather. A behemoth of goodness loaded with thinly sliced roast beef, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, and mustard, all piled high on two slices of sourdough bread. Another personal fave is the Spicy Sensation, a tasty combination of Sausalito turkey, pepperjack cheese, iceberg lettuce, tomato, pepperoncini, and mayo on Dutch Crunch bread.
Sandwiches aren’t the only menu items that make Big Belly Deli a hit with locals. Their home-made soups are like a warm hug on a cold day and vary weekly so there’s always something new to try including standouts like the oh-sodelicious chicken pot pie soup to the infamous broccoli cheddar. On Fridays, there’s clam chowder.
While fans of Big Belly Deli can smash their sammies Monday through Friday at the Lodi location, they are also the exclusive deli shop for the Lodi Wine Trolley, Lodi’s first full-service trolley to take tourists from winery to winery. When making your reservation for the trolley, you can choose your lunch from Big Belly Deli to keep your belly full for a day of Lodi wine tasting.
