SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY’S FOOD FIGHT  Nora Heston Tarte

The Emergency Food Bank is doing its part to quiet growls echoing from community stomachs. Through the Bank’s main pantry on Scotts Avenue in Stockton, 265 people are served daily. A whopping 50,000 individuals and families were fed by the main pantry over the course of 2015.

& 72 WINE COMFORT FOOD  Nora Heston Tarte

Comfort foods pair perfectly with wine and while expensive varieties are great, some pairings are best kept simple. In the end, it’s all about balance—choosing a wine with characteristics that complement ingredients without overpowering them, or paling in comparison. For example, spicy Chinese food needs a sweet, simple counterpart, while salty favorites work well with fruit-forward varieties. Read on to learn more.

70 FOR THE BIRDS  Nora Heston Tarte

To mark the migration, the city of Lodi co-sponsors the Sandhill Crane Festival, November 4-6, where bird enthusiasts gather to experience the migratory habits of the birds. This year marks Lodi’s 20th Sandhill Crane Festival, a big deal for those who have followed the cause since inception. Not only does the festival bring in a new kind of tourist—one who didn’t come solely for the zinfandel, though would likely enjoy a glass—it allows the City to continue its conservation efforts and share the meaningful cause with the community.

DISCOVER CHICAGO  Nora Heston Tarte

Located on the Southwestern shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago is known for its deep-dish pizza, abundance of museums, peculiar bean-shaped monument, and proximity to several bodies of water. A November vacation to the windy city will see plenty of snow and wintery activities (like ice skating), as well as a slew of holiday events. Give in to the attractions that draw tourists in, without passing up the lure locals love.

Recycle used fryer oil. • Give gifts such as movie tickets or a gift certificate to a nice restaurant.

publisher’s note

UPFRONT 209

EAT, DRINK & say “YES!”

“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” –Dr. Seuss

There’s something about photomontages that really pull at my wife’s heartstrings. So, when the time came to ask her to be my wife, I had a perfect idea in mind. I first met Valerie when she came in to apply for a job at one of my first companies. We spent every day after that moment together—traveling, laughing, and enjoying our children.    Shortly after I knew that I wanted to build a life with her, and found the holidays to be a perfect time to ask, as both of our families gathered together. I created a slideshow of photos from trips, moments that fused our family, and special little cherished moments. With our family together, I sat her down and played the slideshow as one of her favorite songs played. The photos flashed on the screen as tears rolled down her face. To her surprise, the last slide said, “Valerie, will you marry me?”    Of course she said yes, because who would say no to such a stud?! Just kidding, I think the montage truly sealed the deal. But, the reason I’m sharing this story after decades of marriage, another child, and life with very few dull moments is to give a nudge to all those lovebirds considering the plunge. It’s no secret that holidays are an excellent time to propose. Family scattered across the country come together, lights twinkle, magic lays thick in the air, and many factors that can help you capitalize on the enchantment are already in effect.   We dedicate a section of our November magazine for this exact reason. Our annual bride guide differs from our Wedding Magazine, as a straight-to-the-point resource for engagement and wedding planning. From jewelry stores and photographers to venues, dress boutiques, and more—we’ve complied a detailed and hassle free listing of all the Central Valley has to offer couples that are taking the next step. Peruse through our pages for a piece of mind. And remember, a sappy song and nostalgic pictures get the job done!   As we welcome the holidays and race quickly toward Christmas, remember to take a step back and enjoy the moments. It’s tough with shopping lists a mile long, in-law visits, school plays, and community mixers—and we know that. When you take that next moment for yourself, flip through our pages for family-focused, gift giving, and of course, dinner hosting inspiration. Whether you’re looking to blow your extended family away with your knowledge of classic comfort food and Lodi Appellation wine pairing, take the kids on the Sierra Dinner Train for a visit with Santa like no other, or watch the Cranes make their historically anticipated debut—San Joaquin is bursting at the seems this season.

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY’S

FOOD FIGHT  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

For most people, a pang of hunger signals the need to grab a snack. It alerts the brain to the body’s requirement for nutrition to sustain itself throughout the day. Without a proper

amount of nutritious food, the mind becomes unfocused, and the body becomes weak. Over prolonged periods of time, it opens the door for serious or chronic disease. For nearly 800 million Americans these sensations nag at them daily, and food insecurity is their constant companion.

During the holidays, efforts ramp up, and it’s a good opportunity for many to get involved. In 2015, 2,100 families enjoyed a Thanksgiving Day meal courtesy of EFB, and for Christmas, 1,400 families received a food box. It couldn’t have been done without community support.   All of EFB’s efforts are sustained through community donations and volunteers. To help, consider hosting a food drive, becoming a sustaining donor, volunteering at a local bank, or simply spreading the word.   “Remember, hunger knows no season,” Mike points out. To quell stomach pains year round, the EFB hosts special events from May through December to make as big an impact as it can manage. FEED THE HUNGRY:

“The mission of the EFB is to build a stronger community by providing a safety net of healthy food, nutrition education, and hope to residents of San Joaquin County who find themselves in need.” – Mike Donaghy, Executive Director, Stockton/San Joaquin Emergency Food Bank

However, hunger is not just a national problem. In San Joaquin County, it’s a local need. In our own backyard, more than 21 percent of the population is living below the poverty line, which means they may not have the means to purchase as much food as is needed to properly feed their families.   The Emergency Food Bank is doing its part to quiet growls echoing from community stomachs. Through the Bank’s main pantry on Scotts Avenue in Stockton, 265 people are served daily. A whopping 50,000 individuals and families were fed by the main pantry over the course of 2015.   Sadly, it isn’t enough. Despite grand efforts made by EFB and other area food banks, San Joaquinians are still going hungry; the food fight is not being won.    In an effort to reach more people in need, a mobile farmer’s market was launched in 2007. It helps distribute more food than

the pantry could manage on its own, and it allows EFB to reach urban communities that do not have healthy, cost-effective food readily available.    “The program not only delivers healthy and nutritious fruits and vegetables to those in need, [it] provides for a 15-minute food preparation demonstration and a recipe for the fruits and vegetables being distributed that day,” says Mike Donaghy, Executive Director of EFB. Each month, the mobile efforts reach 60 communities and more than 27,000 families and individuals.    Combined efforts have a greater impact. In 2015, across all platforms, the EFB distributed 6 million pounds of food, including 1.5 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables. These meal services help families stave off hunger, educate them on how to create healthful meals, alleviate financial stress, and make nutritious food a convenient option.

CHRISTMAS CHEER

ALONG the RAIL LINES SIERRA DINNER TRAIN BRINGS THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT TO RIDERS  BY COPPER WILLIAMS

clickity-clack along the rail line as the train pushes through towns, fields, and vineyards is a charming reminder of childhoods spent watching the huge locomotives roll by. Here in the valley, we have very little reason to ever encounter a train beyond pausing at a crossing to watch it pass. But Sierra Dinner Train out of Oakdale rekindles that old sense of adventure with their themed train rides, much to the delight of Central Valley families!   Sierra Dinner Train begins and ends its journeys in the cozy confines of Oakdale, where passengers are seated for a spectacular expedition across the region, entertained by their own imaginations and the unfolding stories brought to life by Sierra Dinner Train’s performers. These themed train rides vary depending upon the season and feature trips that centralize around holidays, food and drink, and even specialty adventures such as Murder Mysteries!   Our personal favorite is perfect for this blustery time of year: The Magical Christmas Train! This 90-minute trip through the valley follows the story of Morgan, a little girl who’s given up on Christmas and

on the hunt for her missing Teddy Bear. Riders will follow her along her journey, enjoying musical singalongs, endless cookies, and hot cocoa in a souvenir mug. With visits from Santa’s elves, a teddy bear, and the jolly man himself, this ride makes for a perfect group Christmas gift, pre-wrapped in the holiday spirit!    Because each seat comes pre-assigned, it’s best to reserve your places in advance and make a note of your party size during purchase to capture the entire experience alongside family and friends. Arrive at least thirty minutes in advance to confirm your reservation and climb aboard.   Those who have pre-ordered “Morgan and the Magical Christmas Train” book will have the chance to receive signatures from Santa and his happy helpers. But don’t worry! Santa himself will make his rounds to greet all the good boys and girls.   Grab your blanket, don your pajamas, and get ready to experience a side of Christmas you can only encounter on board Sierra Dinner Train’s Magical Christmas Train! Q&A TREICK DEBOARD withPAULA

 BY COPPER WILLIAMS

acter does something I didn’t see coming, or when a new possibility opens up and the plot shifts in another direction. Those are the best, those happy writing accidents.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE WRITER’S BLOCK?

Ready your pens, typewriters, and keyboards, San Joaquin! National Novel Writers Month is upon us! In honor of this occasion,

we tracked down a local author celebrity, Paula Treick DeBoard, the mind behind The Mourning Hours, The Fragile World, and her latest book, The Drowning Girls. While working on her fourth novel, she took a few minutes to share a little bit about herself.

WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER WRITING?

I’ve been writing stories for as long as I can remember. My first “novel” was written when I was nine years old, in the back of my parents’ station wagon when my family moved from Ohio to central California. It was exactly as good as you might expect a novel written by a nine-year-old to be.

WHAT PART OF THE PLOT DO YOU ENJOY WRITING MOST?

I love the moment when the unexpected happens—when a char46

|

I am a great believer in pushing through. Sometimes I try to write a scene from a different character’s perspective, just to see the story from a different angle. Working with a deadline in mind is a constant reminder that I have to keep going, and I can’t allow myself to get stuck for too long.

WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION?

I tend to write what I call “could be real” fiction, and my writing typically focuses on individuals or families at times of high tension. Every now and then I’ll encounter something—an article in a newspaper or a scrap of conversation (I admit to eavesdropping freely in public places), and my mind will snag on that idea and keep turning it around until it becomes a story I want to tell. Real life can be fascinating as well as mundane.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR THOSE TRYING TO WRITE THEIR FIRST NOVEL?

I wish I could say that writing a novel is not that difficult, or not particularly time-consuming, or that all the people in your life will understand and respect what you are trying to do—but that most likely won’t be true. The good news is, if you work relent-

NOTHING to

SNEEZE ABOUT PREVENT THE SNIFFLES THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!  BY COPPER WILLIAMS Tis the season to be wary! With mold and mildew, colds and flu, we’ve got a lot to worry about catching during the most “wonderful” time of the year. So before you

have to reach for those tissues and call in for a sick day, take a look at some tried and true routines you can incorporate to keep yourself healthy! Keep your immune system in top form. Your immune system is your best friend during the colder months. Take good care of it by getting plenty of rest to allow it to recoup after a long day. Healthy eating habits give your body the nutrition it needs to operate smoothly. That means no skimping on those vegetables! Exercise is essential to keeping your body circulating healthy cells that can combat nasty germ invaders. Make sure you pull for at least thirty minutes daily to get the best out of your workout. Pop a few vitamin C pills and you’ve got a well-rounded routine! Promote healthy habits. It’s good hygiene to wash your hands before a meal and after using the 48

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

restroom, but you should also watch what you handle in between. Give your digits a scrub after being in a public place, such as a store, mall, or gas station. If you can’t, your next best defense against germs is hand sanitizer. Carry it with you and make it a habit of adding a few dabs to your hands if you’re eating finger foods or doing a little grooming, especially around your face! And steer clear of sick people like the plague! Or, at the very least, until they haven’t been showing symptoms for a week or so. Better safe than sickly! Stay positive! It’s a little hard to stay cheerful when cloudy days become a mainstay during the winter months. Add old man winter’s bitter wrath with longer nights and you’ve got yourself a recipe for the winter blues. But what does this have to do with getting sick? Plenty! Studies show that your mood greatly determines how well you can combat a cold. Our recommendation? Plenty of cat videos, social outings, and reading a few of our feel good articles to keep that smile all day long!

TABLE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

COMMITTED TO CREATING CHANGE, THE FOUNDATION CALLS ON THE CORE VALUES OF LOVE, SERVICE, AND UNITY  BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

“The journey of life—and just seeing the scope of society, and specifically Stockton—got me thinking,” says Tyronne Gross, Stockton native and former NFL running back.

“I just knew that I wanted to make a positive impact.”    With that driving force, Tyronne reflected, reached out, and prayed. “The Lord showed me a vision of a table that represented building relationships in support of each other and a better world,” Tyronne says of the beginnings of the Table Community Foundation (TCF.)

TCF FOCUS

Throughout the year TCF enriches local youth, as they’ve integrated with Stockton and Lodi Unified School Districts, now heading their afterschool programs. Today, TCF can be found at over 15 after school sites within the community, offering a daily set curriculum that focuses on both academics and athletics. “The programs focus on a one-onone experience with the kids,” says TCF board member Tim Brown. “If a student is struggling in a specific class, we help them with homework and test preparation before the group gets into structured games and activities.”    To further nurture San Joaquin youth, TCF operates their co-ed NFL Flag Football League for youth ages 5-14, and hosts the Legacy Camp, an annual 2-day football camp founded and coached by local, current, and former professional football players. “I never had an opportunity to go to a camp,” Tyronne says. “We couldn’t afford it. So our goal is to give kids that experience, offering the camp for free.” As Tyronne explains, the camp goes beyond football, teaching t life skills, and offering accessibility to the foundation’s resources.

With service at the forefront, Tyronne teamed with friends, mentors, and community members to break bread at his hypothetical table. “There are so many people that serve from their heart, and that is the only way this would work,” he says.    By 2009 TCF was incorporated, impacting the community through many outlets, including their Annual Gift of Giving—a program that supports and encourages youth. Each year, the foundation works with the community to select students, based on merit, to receive a $100 shopping spree. “It’s not just helping the underprivileged—it’s encouraging growth, success, and kindness,” Tyronne says of the program that requires selected students to first compose an essay about what giving means to them.   Children chosen to participate in the Annual Gift of Giving sit down with Tyronne, TCF members, and their families to talk about generosity, kindness, and humility before being partnered with an athlete or business professional. “We want to hear their heart,” Tyronne adds.   During their shopping spree, students also purchase one gift to be given to another child in need. The continuation of the gift of giving allows TCF and their recipients to donate an upwards of 500 gifts to local organizations like the Women’s Center and Mary Graham Children’s Shelter.

A TRENDING LOCALE FOR LOCALLY CRAFTED BITES AND CALIFORNIA-MADE PRODUCTS toio bottle from the Lodi Olive Oil Company. “I want to support the community I live in.”    One of the key ingredients to Luciana’s success is the namesake of her business. Hanging on the wall near the door are three differently sized boxes. These cute cardboard cubes are the grocery carts for customers who come in to create gift boxes for friends, family, and their own clientele. “I want people to come in and create something they know the recipient is going to like,” she explains, filling a box as an example. “If you know that your boyfriend likes this special soap and chocolate you can come here and put it together especially for him.”    With seasonal switches, the stock is always fresh for whatever holiday is right around the corner. Stop in and show your loved ones you really care and Say It With A Box!

Sage and mint, rustic wood paneling, and wall to wall rows of artisan goods from across San Joaquin, is a taste of what we discovered on our trip to the gourmet goods shop located on the corner of Alpine and Delaware in Stockton. Unrivaled in originality, Say It With A Box is

the trending locale for delectable locally crafted bites and California-made products. Foodie tested and wallet-approved, it’s become the go-to gift shop for those looking to show their special someone they care with customizable flair.    Say It With A Box began with one foodie in particular: Luciana Sokotowski. As a fan of our Golden State, Luciana couldn’t get enough of what California has to offer. Traveling across its many ocean-side cities and rural communities prepped this entrepreneur with the taste buds she’d need to capture the hearts of San Joaquinians. The result? A corner-store that Luciana has taste-tested from the bottom up, much to the delight of her clientele! “Anything that I have, I like to share. And I like the idea of sharing something that you like,” Luciana beams. “If I don’t love it, I can’t sell it.”    Luciana lives her motto, providing customers with outstanding, high-quality merchandise from facilities she’s often visited before promoting. Along the doorway are racks of locally made soaps and spritzers. Near the window sits bags of Trail Coffee Roasters beans and a wide variety of Bozzano’s flavored olive oils. All local, all delicious. “Ninety eight percent of my vendors are from here,” Luciana notes as she picks up an extra virgin Fran52

FOR BIRDS the

LODI’S SANDHILL CRANE FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 20 YEARS NOVEMBER 4-6  BY NORA HESTON TARTE For many, the appearance of the greater and lesser Sandhill Cranes who come from as far away as Siberia (and as near as Northern California) mark the beginning of fall as they fly into the California Delta.

Oft-covered in remnants of rust-colored clay used to camouflage themselves each spring, the beautiful, silvery birds announce their arrival with loud (surprisingly calming) rattle calls as they make their descent into the wetlands—the watery bedrooms they’ll inhabit until March. The annual coming and going of the Sandhill Cranes is a fascinating event that brings crowds from around the globe, but to the cranes it’s nothing new. Their visits predate humanity. 70

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

Day in and day out, the families of cranes— fiercely loyal to each other and their migration routine—forage in the nearby fields and sleep standing up in the three-to-four inches of fresh water that covers the area off of Woodbridge Road. “It’s a community, very similar to us,” says Kathy Grant, watershed program coordinator for the City of Lodi, of the social birds who learn their migration pattern from their parents.   “It’s a big deal. I think of it as prehistoric,” Kathy says. “It’s primordial California. It’s what this valley must have looked like before… the onslaught of humanity showed up.”   When major agricultural changes began to alter the geography of the Delta—mainly due to farming practices—officials from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife noticed the birds were no longer making their winter homes near Lodi. The reason? The shallow fresh water they slept in to protect themselves from predators was gone. So, local duck clubs and CDFW (nee Fish and Game) employees got to work to repair the cranes’ preferred resting ground.   As a result, the Eisenberg Crane Reserve was formed on two parcels totaling more than 300 acres of Delta land. Owned by the taxpayers, it’s no longer farmed but rather managed for the good of the birds. CDFW workers “flood up” the fields, maintaining the desired layer of fresh water across the conservation

“We’re really trying to reach the kids,” Kathy says. This year, the City is bringing in Cathy Cook, a visual artist from the University of Maryland who will serve as guest speaker at the conservation dinner. However, Cathy also created an interactive exhibit using gaming technology that will allow kids to play and dance around while their movements are projected onto the wall as a crane avatar. Kids and adults can both take a tour during the event—there are some 47 options available—to get closer to the birds’ habitat, learn about the importance of wildlife preservation, and take advantage of a truly picture perfect moment, especially when you tour at sunset.

affect water quality. Untreated run-off from streets carries garbage, pesticides, and harmful chemicals from car washing and other activities to the Mokelumne River, and eventually contaminates the water on the reserve.   “I will say that the local communities behavior in town here, or anyone actually that lives on the Mokelumne River, impacts the birds out on the road,” Kathy says. Research is limited on how the birds are impacted but it ultimately affects the food chain. “Washing the cars is probably the number one thing people can stop doing,” Kathy says. Minimizing chemicals and picking up trash is also important.

ANOTHER CAUSE

ATTEND THE FESTIVAL:

Kathy’s interest in the Sandhill Cranes isn’t strictly professional. Her position at the City of Lodi opened her eyes to how community members’ habits

site to keep the birds safe, and coming back; efforts that include precise movements to ensure the water stays fresh by replacing it every few days.

THE FESTIVAL

To mark the migration, the city of Lodi co-sponsors the Sandhill Crane Festival, where bird enthusiasts gather to experience the migratory habits of the birds, for three days every November. “The mission is to bring awareness to local community conservation efforts to protect the habitat that these birds depend on,” Kathy explains. “It’s a very successful festival. We make a lot of money, we bank the money, and roll it over to next years festival.” Some funds are put aside for special projects, some funds field trips to the conservation site for area schools, and some covers road maintenance costs around the reserve.    It’s important to recognize the festival as a tourism opportunity for Lodi. The relationship between the Lodi community and the Sandhill Cranes is a little give and take. But the festival exists mostly to heighten people’s awareness, to educate them. And that means everyone. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

WINE

comfort

FOOD THE RIGHT WINES TO PAIR WITH YOUR FAVORITE COMFORT FOODS  BY NORA HESTON TARTE When winter hits, home cooked classics quickly become stovetop staples.

Comfort foods—high in sugars and carbohydrates with a subtle nod to home—are often synonymous with allday cooking, and many are considered more frugal dishes to make. But that doesn’t mean we should skimp on the wine. Nothing is off limits anymore. Comfort foods pair perfectly with wine

champagne

72

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

and while expensive varieties are great, some pairings are best kept simple. In the end, it’s all about balance—choosing a wine with characteristics that complement ingredients without overpowering them, or paling in comparison. For example, spicy Chinese food needs a sweet, simple counterpart, while salty favorites work well with fruit-forward varieties. Read on to learn more.

CHICKEN POT PIE

Pairing white wines with poultry is common practice, and when it comes to savory chicken potpie, the rule still applies. Smooth, dry whites like a chenin blanc aged in oak or a viognier will do the trick. Chardonnay is another conventional option. Go lighter with a pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc. The goal is to keep it dry, crisp, and clean. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Master the crust tuck. Trim the top and bottom crust so that about one-inch remains. Fold the crusts under and tuck into the pie plate to seal the savory goodness inside.

SPAGHETTI BOLOGNESE

Round out this classic Italian meal with a red wine that hails from the same locale. Barbera are available locally and make a safe pairing for rich sauce. Want to step it up a notch? Bring home a bottle of barbaresco—a popular Italian red made from the nebbiolo grape. Look for one with notes of cherry; they pair well with rich sauces. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Ditch the canned tomatoes and use fresh instead.

PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY SANDWICH

A PBJ may sound like a lunchbox stuffer for your kids, but when you’re in a dinner bind, it’s also a perfectly acceptable dish that won’t garner complaints. Pair it with a dry, acidic white wine, like a chenin blanc or a riesling. Choosing a not-so-sweet vino provides balance. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Elevate your PBJ by warming it up—in the waffle iron.

FRIED CHICKEN

Who says your fried chicken can’t be fancy? Whether it’s a family recipe or your favorite drive-thru bucket, the surefire way to class it up is to pair the dish with champagne. The cool, refreshing taste of champagne—and sparkling wines—is the ideal complement to fatty, fried chicken. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Retain moisture by salting the chicken at least two hours before you fry it (extra points if you salt it the night before) followed by a dry brine technique. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

75

TOMATO SOUP

A hearty tomato soup is a cold weather classic, and a light red wine will pair best. Go for a barbera—an Italian red high in acid but low in tannins—or a Grenache—a sweet, red dessert wine that will balance the salt in your soup. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Keep it simple. Tomato soup only needs a handful of ingredients to taste its best. Don’t go overboard on the flavor or it can become too complex.

APPLE PIE

It doesn’t get more American than apple pie. The spicy-sweet combination (think warm, gooey apples cooked with nutmeg and cinnamon) pairs well with a late-harvest Gewurztraminer. It’s a rare opportunity to couple dessert with an aromatic sweet wine—but it works! For a more readily available vino, select a moscato, a sweet, fizzy wine from Italy. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Go hands on. While making the dough, cut the butter and flour together using your hands.

MASHED POTATOES & GRAVY

Full-bodied white wines are key. You need something that won’t be overwhelmed by the heavy dish. Select an oaky California chardonnay; the smoothness of the wine will perform nicely with the buttery potatoes and thick gravy, while the toasted quality helps it stand up against the multitude of flavors. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: This is no time to count calories. Load your mashed potatoes with sour cream, cream cheese, and plenty of milk. The heavier the better. 76

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

CHILI

To offset the spicy flavor opt for a juicy, fruit-forward wine (think a Chilean cabernet sauvignon), something full-bodied but low in tannins. Some experts even suggest chilling red wine ever so slightly to attain a better balance with the hot, complex dish. It’ll offer a refreshing quality often achieved with off dry Rieslings (another option). Impress dinner guests with a bottle of Beaujolais—a low tannin French wine. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Only cook with high quality meats regardless of what varieties are present in your recipe. When using beef, go for an 80:20 meat-to-fat ratio to maximize flavor.

BLUE CHEESE & ONION BURGER

Blue cheese and onions are bold so you’ll need a robust wine that can stand its ground. Spicy malbecs, zinfandels, and GSMblends won’t fall flat against the powerful flavors present in this burger, but they won’t compete either. Look for full-bodied reds with notes of tobacco and spice. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Combine blue cheese with uncooked ground beef instead of placing it on top of the burger at the end to better meld tastes.

PANCAKES WITH FRESH BERRIES

Sparkling wine or champagne is the way to go when it comes to pairing wine with breakfast foods (but you can hold the juice). When using fresh berries or compote, team pancakes with a sparkling rosé, a fun, bubbly addition to breakfast. A rosé with subtly sweet undertones will balance the tartness of the berries. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Always use fresh fruit in compotes. The flavor will be more genuine.

PIZZA

COLLARD GREENS

When it comes to Southern fare, wine pairing rules get a bit murky. Collard greens, like many comfort foods, are considered a down-home dish more akin to the cost-effective PBJ than food that warrants a wine pairing, but the science here is easy. Balance bitter, steamed greens with sweet wine like moscato or riesling. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Stew your collard greens with ham and smoked hock to create a delicious flavor profile.

When serving pizza, reach for an acidic red. The red sauce on traditional pizzas will work nicely with a Spanish wine—perhaps a tempranillo. The trick is to keep with something that is smooth and offers notes of red berries. Malbec is another good choice. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Sometimes the difference is in the tools. If you’re baking pizza at home, use a baking stone. The appliance mimics a masonry oven and will help produce a crispy crust.

FISH & CHIPS

Champagne and sparkling wines are a good fit for fried foods (perhaps partly because sparkling party drinks are amongst the most versatile wines for food pairings). Balance the crispy, warm fried fish with refreshing bubbly for a playful pairing. ADDED BONUS: champagne is hailed as the best bet for French fries, or “chips.” HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Use soda water in your batter to create authentic English-style fish and chips. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

77

SHEPHERD’S PIE

Made primarily with lamb, a medium-bodied red wine works nicely with shepherd’s pie. Oak-aged Spanish reds—a red rioja reserva—will pair nicely, as will a French wine, such as traditional Bordeaux. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Chop or mince your meat at home as opposed to purchasing meat minced. Not only does it stay true to the original recipe, many argue it proffers more edible meat.

LASAGNA

The sauce used in cooking classic lasagna is very similar to Bolognese, which means any wines you’d drink with spaghetti Bolognese you can easily pair with lasagna. The only exception is the addition of cheese. To balance the extra ingredient, opt for a slightly fuller-bodied barbera. Malbec, syrah, and medium-bodied cabernet sauvignons are also options. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Use no-boil noodles to avoid a soggy finished product. These noodles are thinner than dried pasta and therefore absorb the sauce best.

TURKEY MEATLOAF

Mom’s meatloaf is a comfort food staple, but to make it fit into a more health-conscious diet, many chefs switch out ground beef for ground turkey. This change affects the wine pairing strategy so white wines work best—particularly a dry, perhaps oaky, chardonnay or sauvignon blanc. Desperate for red? A pinot noir with similar qualities will do. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Cook veggies into the turkey meatloaf. Not only does this add flavor and texture, it’s a good way to sneak vegetables past your kids (or your spouse).

DEVIL’S FOOD CAKE

Red wine and dark chocolate go together like, well, red wine and dark chocolate. With rich chocolate cake, fruit-forward is the way to go. Sweet ports or dessert wines are an excellent pairing for Devil’s Food Cake, but if you like more spicy than sweet, look for a red that was aged in a spicy oak barrel. You can’t do better than a full-bodied California cabernet sauvignon. HOW TO MAKE THE BEST: Devil’s Food Cake tastes best when it’s really moist. Look for a recipe that uses sour cream to ensure it doesn’t dry out. 78

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

DUCK FAT FRENCH FRIES

Duck fat was the go-to choice for cooking French fries when they first became a thing, and many gourmet chefs are going back to the fried food’s roots to reclaim that original flavor. Pair this dish with pinot noir—the wine most commonly recommended for duck. The two flavors complement each other well. Gamay Noir—similar in taste—also works and shares the fries’ pseudo-French roots. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Prep your potato. Soak peeled and cut potato wedges in ice water for 30 minutes before frying. Pat dry.

THANKSGIVING DINNER

Balance the array of flavors present in your holiday feast by choosing an elegant, smooth red to accompany the meal. Pinot noirs and GSM-blends both accentuate the flavor profiles of roasted turkey and are gentle enough to work throughout dinner. A versatile bubbly is another go-to that meets the celebratory air of the day. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Timing is everything on turkey day. Find a few ovens and prep dishes so everything finishes at the right time.

CHINESE TAKE-OUT

A Riesling best balances the heavy, complex flavors of Chinese food. Want to get more technical? Something a little dry, a little-fruit forward, and a little old fair finest, and when it comes to Chinese, German varieties top the list. Prosecco is an option for dark sauces—think soy- or plum-based. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: When mastering fried rice at home, forget the rule about fresh ingredients. Cold, cooked rice that is at least one day old is the trick used in many great recipes. Using long grain rice is another.

TUNA MELT

Whites pair best with seafood, but rules are made to be broken. After all, you are pairing wine with a melt sandwich. Melts made with cheddar cheese, parsley, and onions will couple nicely with a dry, oaky merlot-blend. Pick up a bottle from Chile for the best match. Not that adventurous? Dry sauvignon blancs or chardonnays complement the black pepper and lemon juice flavors present in most recipes. HOW TO MAKE IT BEST: Brown the bread on a grill or Panini press to get those satisfying grill lines, and evenly melted cheese. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

Bride FITNESS

WEDDING DRESS

Workout

 BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

You’ve adorned the venue, spent hours contemplating which bridesmaid's dress will best complement your friends, and missed hours of beauty sleep reviewing checklists in your head. What a selfless bride you are! But, now that everything is in order it’s time to focus on you, and your dress. Surely you chose your style months ago, and have been thinking of how it fits every time you sit down to another lunch meeting with the wedding planner. Is it strapless? Is it backless? Is it form fitting?    Your dress cut and style is sure to call attention to certain areas—and we are here to make sure they look their best on your special day. It’s time to buckle down and tailor your workout to specifically compliment your dress.

THE HOUR GLASS WORKOUT: Form-fitting styles like mermaid, trumpet, and sheath dresses hug the body tight, drawing attention to your midsection, butt, and thighs. Incorporate the below reps into your workout, spending extra time on the core, so that no belly bulge will be attending your wedding.

SPIDERMAN PLANK CRUNCH

Start in a traditional plank position with your forearms on the ground and your body perfectly straight, paying extra attention to your core. While maintaining plank, bend your right knee out to the side of your body and pull it up to meet your right forearm, reaching to meet your upper body as far as you can. Repeat with your left knee and alternate sides for a total of 10 reps.

SEATED CRUNCH

Sit on your bottom, lean back, and raise your lower legs (with knees bent and calves crossed) so that your core forms a V. Hold a 5 pound medicine ball, or dumbbell, in your hands and swivel your core from left to right bringing the ball or weight across the body while maintaining the V shape. Pay attention to the V shape at all times for the best results! Do 3 sets of 15.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

BACKLESS BEAUTY WORKOUT: Open back wedding dresses are all the rage, accentuating a variety of styles from vintage to contemporary. With all that skin showing, you’ll certainly want it to be toned, and here are a few tricks that will have everyone watching as you leave.

DUMBBELL BENT OVER ROW

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding dumbbells in each hand with your arms at your side. Bend your knees slightly, push your hips back and bend forward from the hips, without rotating your back. With your arms extending straight in front of you from your shoulders, wrists facing back, and knuckles forward—pull your weights straight up, meeting your hips. Squeeze your shoulder blades together while keeping your torso tight and your back flat. Slowly lower the weights to start position and begin again. 15 reps, go!

T EXTENSION

Lie facedown with your arms directly in line with your shoulders so that your body forms a T shape. Begin with your arms resting on the ground and your thumbs pointing toward the ceiling. Slowly raise your arms as high as you comfortably can, and hold in this position for five seconds. Release the hold and return your arms to the ground with control. Do not flop them down, as the return is just as strengthening. 20 reps!

SEXY AND STRAPLESS WORKOUT: I hate armpit fat as much as the next person, and especially when bearing a cute halter or strapless number. Why is it there?! How does it go away? Do you poke it until it disappears? No, you do these exercises and watch it diminish until nothing is calling away from the beauty of your gown’s details.

PLANK ELBOW RAISES

Planks not only help to strengthen your upper body and core, but this variation will beat underarm fat as well. To get into a proper plank, lay on the floor with your hands together, and palms and elbows flat on the floor. Raise your body in a straight line, engaging your core as you push forward from your toes and lift yourself off the floor. Lower your body back to the starting position and repeat 3 sets of 20 reps.

LATERAL RAISES

Stand up straight, with a tight core, and dumbbells gripped in both hands. Raise both arms to your sides, meeting your shoulders to form a straight line from dumbbell to dumbbell. Hold this controlled, straightlined pose for two seconds before lowering with control. Continue for 3 sets of 8 reps.

Bride TIPS

DO’S and DON’TS before the BIG “I DO.”  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

The idea of a wedding is nothing less than dreamy, and the notion of your wedding day is extremely magical. However, there is a practical side to planning a wedding which is accompanied by lots of Do’s and Don’ts. Some of the most important ones, I believe, are below….   DO Plan the wedding together. There will be things you care about and things he doesn’t, and vice versa. Planning it together makes the day even more special.   DO Choose a song for your first dance that is meaningful to both of you. Choosing what is popular or a current favorite song won’t mean near as much as a song that holds meaning for you both- no matter what era it is from.   DO Keep a pad of paper and a pen in your car. The car is always a good place to jam! So, keep that pen and paper handy to jot down favorite songs you want to be played at your reception. Traffic or long drives are great opportunities for musical inspirations! Remember to present this list to your band or DJ. (I also recommend going to listen to your band or your DJ before you hire them!)   DO Order extra Thank You notes… A must! You may mess up, or not like what you have written, so having extras will definitely come in handy. Also, remember etiquette dictates that a guest has up to a year to give you a gift, so you may receive gifts long after the actual wedding day and so you will want extras.   DO Remember that there is no such thing as a perfect wedding. There will be glitches, but everything WILL work out. If you stay calm, others will remain calm. The most important thing is to remember why you are there, and if the timing is off slightly or a groomsman accidentally crushes their Boutonniere (which reminds me- DO order a few extra for this purpose. Trust me, it happens.) The point is, your wedding day is the start of your marriage. The day itself is not as important as the life you are beginning, so don’t let any unexpected problems ruin your day. 96

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

DON’T Choose your photographer or your videographer solely on their work. Relationship is largely important. These vendors will be with you the entire day- in your face, capturing your interactions, watching your every move, so you will definitely want to feel comfortable with them. Make sure you like their personality and develop a relationship with them as this will make for better pictures and better video resultsguaranteed!   DON’T Forget the Emergency Wedding Kit! Extra safety pins, breath mints, bottled water, aspirin, nail file, Kleenex, nail polish, mini sewing kit, double sided tape, overthe-counter non-drowsy allergy medication (just in case), and hairspray are important staples for any clothing emergency, nail chipping, or a snag that may pop up unexpectedly.   DON’T Forget the waterproof mascara. If you don’t normally wear water-proof mas-

cara, then you may want to test it first to make sure there are no reactions.   DON’T Forget about the Groom. The bride is the center of attention. Often times the grooms get left out. Give your Groom some extra attention leading up to the big day. Send him love notes; let him know how much you look forward to being his wife.   DON’T Leave anything to do for the last week of the wedding. The week of your wedding is for pampering! Spend some quiet time at the spa with your groom. An organized bride that can relax a few days before her big moment is the happiest bride. Last minute changes, and trust me there will be some, will not seem so drastic if that is all you have to deal with.   DON’T Forget to leave your watch at home. On the day of your wedding, time stands still.

Proposing to your MOA and bridesmaids is the perfect kickoff to a creative and fun wedding planning experience. Regardless of your budget, you can make your invite as special as your upcoming plans. After all, these girls will be by your side for one of life’s biggest moments. Let them know how special they are, and how important their presence is to you. Encapsulate your personality, relationship or theme—adding an extra special touch to the experience that is your wedding! Here are a few idea guidelines, but we encourage you to de-stress with these simple, creative projects—making them all your own!

BOTTLE UP YOUR LOVE THINGS YOU’LL NEED:

• Bottles of wine • Bow fabric • Gummed paper or peel and stick labels • Markers or a printer DIRECTIONS: This option possesses a lot of freedom! You can choose your message, your paper, and your design. Print labels from your computer using photos of your friends, or draw and decorate your own labels with colorful, metallic or sparkly markers and glitter. Tie your bottle with a bow, and you’re good to go!

POP UP SURPRISE: THINGS YOU’LL NEED:

• Small cardboard boxes with removable lids • Satin ribbon in wedding colors • Parchment or thick paper • Construction paper matching your colors • Glue gun • Small wooden clips • Markers DIRECTIONS: Get creative with this fun idea! You can easily add accents to incorporate your theme or colors. First, use a glue gun to line the lid of your box with a satin strip. Next, choose a shape for the construction paper that will top your box lid. Once the shape is cut, write your bridesmaid’s name. Use the wooden clip to hold the cut out, and glue the clip to the top of the box lid. Let those elements dry while you work on your message. Grab your parchment or thick paper, and fold the paper in fifths like an accordion. Hold your folded paper against your box and cut to size, allowing the paper to fit inside and box and expand when opened. Write your message on the paper, glue the top section of your not to the inside of the box lid, and the bottom to the bottom of the box. Allow to dry before opening!

PUT A NECKLACE ON IT THINGS YOU’LL NEED:

• Jewelry boxes • Necklaces • Parchment paper • Hole punch DIRECTIONS: Choosing the perfect necklace will be the most time consuming part of this invitation. Keep it simple with costume jewelry, or fill the box with a quality piece. First, cut the parchment paper to fit inside the jewelry box, and then write your personalized message. Use a hole punch to make two holes on your note, one at the top left corner and one at the right. Feed your necklace through the holes, and adjust so it falls where you wish. Next, place your parchment in the box and there you have it!

A WONDERFULLY URBAN WINTER WONDERLAND

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

Chicago downtown and Chicago River at night.

 BY NORA HESTON TARTE Located on the Southwestern shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago is known for its deep-dish pizza, abundance of museums, peculiar bean-shaped monument, and proximity to several bodies of water. A November vacation to the windy city will see plenty of snow and wintery activities (like ice skating), as well as a slew of holiday events. Give in to the attractions that draw tourists in, without passing up the lure locals love. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 turned Chicagoland into a city of new architecture, and ultimately a series of neighborhoods as opposed to one all-encompassing metropolis, but amongst the divides provided by the grid-style streets, there’s glamour to be found in Chi-Town, making the Second City, second to none.

CHICAGO

WILLIS TOWER

by theNUMBERS The combined weight of the building is 222,500 tons; that’s 445,000,000 lbs! The elevators inside Willis Tower operate as fast as 1,600 feet per minute, making them among the fastest in the world. Approximately 25,000 people enter the building each day. Willis Tower opened in 1973. It took 2,000 workers three years to build it. The building has 4.5 million gross square feet of floor space. That’s roughly the size of 101 football fields. On a clear day, you can see four states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Visibility from the Skydeck is approximately 40-50 miles. There are 16,100 windows on Willis Tower, and it takes six roof-mounted robotic window washing machines to clean them all.

Birds eye view from the Willis Tower, formerly named Sears Tower

Such GREAT HEIGHTS

Though the second-tallest building in the U.S. was renamed Willis Tower (233 S. Wacker Dr.) in 2009, tourists are likely to hear locals referring to it as Sears Tower, the building’s name pre-2009 Willis Group takeover.   At 1,451-feet, the skyscraper was once the tallest building in the world, and it held that title for nearly 25 years. Today, it has been downgraded to the eighth tallest building in the world, but it’s still a site to see.   More than 1 million people visit the 110-story Tower each year, making it one of Chicago’s most popular attractions. The addition of the Skydeck Chicago—the highest observation deck in the country—has only sweetened the pot. Located on the 103rd floor—1,353 feet in the air—the Ledge boxes jut out from the side of the sky deck 4.3 feet. Glass balconies are completely enclosed, but also entirely clear, giving visitors never-before-seen views of the city.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

CUISINE

Chicago is best known for three dishes: deep dish pizza, the Chicago hotdog, and the Italian beef sandwich. Some would argue the jibarito sandwich should be a fourth on this list.    If you look on Google maps, all of Chicago is dotted with deepdish pizza places, making weeding out the best a hard feat. Even if you ate pizza for every meal during your trip, you still wouldn’t have enough time to compare them all.   Slapping the title of “the best” on any of these restaurants would likely cause a war across Chicago, but we’ll go ahead and do it anyway. Giordano’s is the best deep-dish pizza in the city.   At four Chicago locations, cooks serve up the 200-year old recipe for stuffed, deep-dish pizza. Order up the Chicago Classic—a combination of pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, and green

CHICAGO

WHY is CHICAGO CALLED theWINDY CITY? Most people assume the City by the Lake earned its wellknown nickname from the chilly gusts coming off of Lake Michigan, and while it’s true that Chicago has quite a few blustery days, the moniker more likely refers to the city’s political views.    Many Chicagoans say their city has seen its fair share of big-city corruption at the hands of politicians, so the “wind” actually refers to the hot air bellowed by these political big wigs. This reference commonly dates back to a column written by Charles A. Dana, once the editor of the New York Sun, but variations on the history of the reference exist.

The Museum of Science & Industry

peppers, or go all-meat with a pepperoni, sausage, salami, and bacon creation. Give yourself time for the meal— for those not familiar, a deepdish pizza takes about 45 minutes to cook.    The number of hotdog joints in Chicago is almost as extensive as its offerings for deep-dish pizza, so there’s no excuse not to taste this culinary treat. Plates vary from cart-style dogs (Redhot Ranch is a no-frills hotdog stand, 2072 N. Western Ave., known for its simple—yet delicious—counter-serve options) to gourmet versions (The Four Seasons Allium Restaurant & Bar, 120 E. Delaware Pl., serves its own version—the $16 bourgeois boasting “homemade everything” is worth a try).   Low-key joints hawk the best Italian beef sandwiches. Stop into Jay’s Beef (255 W. North Ave.), a family-run restaurant known for its nofuss setting, and killer Chicago-style fare.   Last up is the jibarito—a sandwich prepared on flattened, fried green plantains instead of bread, and traditionally topped with garlic mayonnaise, meat, cheese, lettuce, and tomato.

132

|

It is no surprise The Jibarito Shop (1646 W. 18th St.) is one of the most well known spots in the city for this Puerto Rican delicacy. Once you’ve sampled the must-try cuisine synonymous with Chicago, turn up the heat with two dreamy dining options.   Enjoy each other’s company at Fork (4600 N. Lincoln Ave.), a rustic gastropub that carries a big craft brew and wine flight menu plus cheese, charcuterie, and American grub. It offers everything couples need for an evening for two—including a list of plates to share, so you can feed each other delicacies such as eggplant caviar and mushroom flatbread.   At Chez Joël Bistro Français (1119 W. Taylor St.), the romance is palpable, as couples enjoy French specialties in a quaint bistro setting. Owned by brothers Joël and Ahmed Kazouin, the family-operated restaurant feeds on intimate moments and gourmet dishes (at surprisingly decent prices). Finish your steak frites and filet mignon dinners with an expertly-coiffed dessert to share.

CULTURE

There’s an abundance of cultural institutions and museums in Chicago, making it hard to visit them all in one trip. Focus on three to conquer this time around. The Museum of Science & Industry (5700 S. Lake Shore Dr.) is a favorite for tourists and locals. Opened in 1933, the 4,000 square foot space is filled with award-winning exhibits and immersive experiences.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS WORTH THEIR WEIGHT

The Field Museum

ICE

SKATING in thePARK On Nov. 13, Millennium Park’s McCormick Tribune Ice Rink opens to the public. Show off your figure eights while taking in picturesque views of the downtown Chicago skyline.   Nearby Maggie Daley Park (337 E. Randolph St.) is another worthy option. The quarter-mile ice ribbon has been compared to a Mario Kart track, and it can accommodate up to 700 skaters at one time. Opens Nov. 14.

134

|

A WWII submarine is located in the building’s basement and a design lab offers visitors the chance to manufacture their own inventions.    The museum’s very first exhibit is still a favorite—a ride that moves down into a true-to-life coal mine where it’s possible to explore a “working” colliery. A historic aspect allows exploration of machinery used over the years, and a hoist provides the trip down the mineshaft and along the rails. Starting Nov. 17, trees to represent cultures around the world are on display as part of the museum’s holiday festivities. The Field Museum (1400 S. Lake Shore Dr.) is another popular stop for tourists and those who inhabit the city. Its goal is to inspire curiosity about ancient life—of which the museum has been focused on answering questions about for more than 120 years.    The museum is home to Sue, the largest and most complete t-rex ever unburied, an exhibit dedicated to

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2016

Africa’s notorious an-eating Tsavo lions, a DNA-discovery center, and more. Open 364 days a year (the museum is closed on Christmas), it’s extremely accessible. Embark on an exemplary date night at Adler Planetarium (1300 S. Lake Shore Dr.) On the third Thursday of every month (Nov. 17) the Adler After Dark program runs 6-10 PM. The event caters to a romantic night for couples. Bars selling out-of-thisworld cocktails and other alcoholic beverages are set up around the museum, and on-site Café Galileo’s serves entrees and snacks.   Cozy up and take in a breathtaking view of the Chicago skyline from inside the planetarium, watch unlimited sky shows in the state-of-the-art theaters, and participate in stellar hands-on educational programs. Live entertainment, access to the Doane Observatory (weather permitting), and full admission to the galleries and exhibits are all included.

You’ve probably seen selfies taken in front of “the bean” come across your newsfeed from anyone on your friend’s list that has fancied a trip to Chicago recently.    The formal name for this public sculpture is Cloud Gate, and it was created by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor. Located in the center of Millennium Park’s AT&T Plaza (201 E. Randolph St.), it has become a beacon for photo ops.   Glamorous Shopping abounds along Chicago’s Michigan Avenue, most notably on the stretch dubbed Magnificent Mile. Here, high-end stores such as Barney’s New York, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Saks Fifth Avenue beckon shoppers to come and indulge in Chicago’s luxurious side. In between these retail giants, designer duds can be found at Prada, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, and more.    November is a spectacular time to stroll hand-in-hand (if you can brave the biting weather) down Michigan Avenue because many of the shops are already outfitted with Christmas decorations. November 19 marks both the Magnificent Mile Light Festival and the Tree-Lighting Parade.   Navy Pier (600 E. Grand Ave.) is one of Chicago’s biggest draws. Hailed as both an important civic landmark and a top-visited leisure destination, there are activities to be enjoyed daily (even in the cold weather months). Cruise the river or catch a showing of William Shakespeare’s Tug of War: Civil Strife. There’s a gallery of stained glass, Shakespeare Theater, crystal garden, and IMAX theatre there. Not to mention a slew of places to shop and eat.

Each year, we grow just a little older and all the wiser. But as we age, we sometimes forget about the important balance we need in our lives to continue living well. Challenging

our minds to continue learning and promoting mental wellness is key to supporting our minds, while committing to a proper exercise routine and diet help our bodies stay strong. MIND

Our mind is a steel trap, devouring and recording every little piece of information it receives. Or so we wish. The truth is, our mind requires exercise just like our body, and it’s crucial to find ways to stimulate it in order to keep it fit and in top form. There are simple, everyday routines you can implement into your life to help improve your wellbeing. Create a few lists, memorize, and then try to recall them a few hours later. These can be as mundane as your groceries, or as unique as vacations you’ve taken over the past several years. If you enjoy cooking, take a class or two and learn something entirely new. This is an excellent way to involve various parts of your brain.    Keep on top of your mental health by informing your doctor of any strange shifts in your mood. Seasonal depression is also a concern during the holiday months. Maintain a close connection with your health provider and let them know if you’ve been going through difficult times.

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

BODY

We all know how important exercise is to our health. The hardest part is mustering up the energy to actually try a routine. If you’re low on fuel, create brief, simple regimens that can be implemented into your everyday life. A loose stretch is a great start to your morning. A walk around the block or your local park will do wonders! If you can’t get out of the house, commit to smaller routines. Sitting in a chair and raising your legs up to rest weight on the balls of your feet, then doing the same to your heels can strengthen your muscles.

mind, body, and soul

THE GOOD LIFE

If you’ve been gaining weight, discuss easy ways to transition to a healthier, leaner diet with your doctor. Take control of your eating habits by incorporating foods and drinks that will work with your lifestyle and any vitamins, supplements, or medications you’re currently taking.

SOUL

Sometimes, when we’re so busy, it’s hard to remember to take time for the little things in life. But those little things make all the difference in making us smile. Spare a few moments out of your busy schedule to make a call to friends and loved ones. Arrange for small get-togethers and go out for some quality bonding. A dinner date is just the ticket to rekindle old friendships and start new ones!   Don’t forget that some “me” time is also just as important as any time spent with loved ones. Pick up a book or magazine and lose yourself for a few hours. Find your sources of inspiration and reconnect with yourself. If you can’t think of anything you’d like to become involved in, try taking up a few of your favorite pastimes you haven’t made time for.

county’s elite. Papapavlo’s Bistro & Bar is a taste of the Mediterranean and beyond, brought to life for your enjoyment by the restaurant’s talented chefs and the dream of Andy Pappas.   Papapavlo’s first graced our region in 1989, when Andy Pappas—with the help of his father—breathed life into a tiny hole in the wall on Pacific Avenue. For eighteen years, Andy and his family

nurtured business growth until its overwhelming success created the opportunity and demand for a larger location in Lincoln Center. But what was it that drew Andy into the restaurant business? “I decided to shift careers when I lived in San Diego,” Andy says of his previous twelve years in real estate. “I fell in love with all the restaurants and cafes in La Jolla. So I decided to learn the business from the ground up.”   From dishwasher, to chef, and manager, Andy continued to rise up across restaurants in California until he finally

thought it time to open his own. That little hole in the wall that served exquisite food on paper plates has since evolved into the gem of Lincoln Center we know today. Even now, Papapavlo’s has continued to expand in menu variety and customer loyalty. Dishes such as their Grilled Seafood Salad, and Gyro Salad, and numerous lunchtime favorites, keep couples coming back for more.    Many recipes still found on the menu are unique blends that were crafted by Andy and his father. Popular dinner items include

the Pistachio Crusted Salmon Fillet and the Charbroiled Lamb Chops. Andy knows that his guests appreciate a good bottle of wine, which is why you’ll find dozens available to make your evening all the merrier. “We have numerous fresh salads and fish entrees,” Andy adds. “They’re definite recommendations for someone who’s never come in.” But once Papapavlo’s grabs hold of your taste buds, you’re a frequent guest. Ask many of the families that waltz in for their favorite dishes two or three times a week.   With four banquet rooms for hosting large celebrations, the establishment is perfect for family reunions, business functions, and holiday events. Specialty banquet menus are available for these events and include delectable appetizers such as the Feta Cheese Triangles and Calamari. Lunch and dinner banquet options include the Rack of Lamb—a mouthwatering Colorado rack of lamb, served with a Cranberry and Port Wine Demi-glaze. “We want a warm, friendly environment for our customers,” Andy states. “The ambiance is cozy,

European.” And what draws out that feeling better than seating yourself and your friends along the number of cozy tables on the veranda? That classic, open-air touch further amplifies the meal and the Mediterranean styled décor. Take a moment to close your eyes, hold that wine glass close, and savor a world away from all your worries.   Can’t come in to get away from it all? No problem! Catering events has become a specialty that the establishment prides itself in, bringing the restaurant to its loyal customers in both service and delectable meals. It’s another way that Papapavlo’s continues to impress its repeat clientele, allowing them to enjoy dishes like the Chicken Marsala and an array of desserts such as the Baklava Cheesecake and Chocolate Silk Mousse for weddings, showers, and so much more. California has its perks, one being easy access to fresh fruits and veggies. And when plums are

in season, you definitely want to get your hands on these beauties. San Joaquin County grows the most plums compared to other counties, and as a whole, California supplies almost 99 percent of plums to the U.S. and 43 percent of the world’s supply. The plum isn’t a native to California, but has made its home here ever since a French farmer arrived with the fruit during the Gold 148

Rush. It was a fruit as good as gold.   Plums are perfect for satisfying hunger and even that pesky sweet craving you’ve been fighting. Nothing is more fulfilling than biting into a nice juicy plum, but when you bite into its dried counterpart—a prune—it can be just as beneficial in providing fiber. Don’t forget the

plum’s pack of potassium that helps manage blood pressure and reduce stroke risk.   Eating a plum is just one way to reap its benefits. You can also make a homemade facial treatment by mashing plum and adding a little organic honey and freshly ground coffee for an exfoliation mask! Mix everything together, apply to face, scrub it, and rinse off after ten minutes. Goodbye dirt and grime!

Plum LEMONADE INGREDIENTS:

2 plums, skin on, pits removed, diced 1/2 cup sugar • 2 cups + 4 cups water juice of 2 lemons • a pinch of salt DIRECTIONS:

BOKISCH vineyards An Adventure in every glass  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

At Bokisch Vineyards, owners Markus and Liz Bokisch are experts at blending more than just Spanish winegrapes; they also effortlessly blend the old with the new. Finding inspiration from the European wine industries, the Lodi residents remain true to the classic tastes of the varietals they produce—five reds, five whites, and three others under the Tizona companion label—while also staying ahead of industry trends, and actively collecting a list of “firsts” under their name.    “We were the first to produce Albariño in Lodi and the first to produce Graciano in the United States,” Liz exclaims. Those are just two distinctions that have helped Bokisch set the bar as producers of Spanish and Iberian wines in California. Dedication to the classics doesn’t mean the Bokischs shy away from new ideas. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. “We love to experiment with new varieties,” Liz says.   The label’s latest endeavor is a limited production, 2014 vintage winemaker’s select blend called Trencadis, a Catalan word for the art of combining broken shards of ceramic tiles to form a unique mosaic. Winemaker Elyse Perry plays on the concept by expertly blending flavors and textures to create one-of-a-kind tastes. In this case, just 108 cases were produced.   “Each year, [Elyse] will create a 150

which refers to the practice of growing the vines on the same land that houses the winery. With the addition of the new winery and tasting room (which features a contemporary glass wall that allows tasters a peek at the winemaking process), they finally got there. The winery and tasting room both sit on their Terra Alta Vineyard in the Clements Hills.   The couple also prides themselves on their sustainable farming practices, farming approximately 2,000 acres that are certified green by the Lodi Rules of Sustainable Farming. “We also farm over 80 acres of grapes which are CCOF certified organic and are in the process of converting another 250 acres to organic this year.”

GIVE A GIFT: special blend or mosaic of wine to be released in the fall,” Liz shares. And the label artwork will play right into the name—using photos taken at the famous Barcelona Park Guell.   Though the label’s wine influence comes heavily from Spain, Liz and Markus use a traditional French vigneron approach to winemaking,

The winery will sell holiday gift packs filled with wine and a porron, a traditional Spanish drinking vessel made of hand blown glass. “It is perfect for dinner parties,” Liz says. Mini porrons will also be available for sale.
