020 was a bust. Most of our favorite places were closed and those that weren’t had pared down their offerings so much to meet COVID-19 restrictions that we barely recognized them anymore. This year, however, we’re hell-bent on enjoying all of our favorite things. With restrictions lifted, San Joaquin County is wide open, and we’re ready to seize the day!
BIKESHARE + ARTSHARE n Very bikeable, one of the best ways to enjoy the artwork in SJC is on two wheels. Lodi Cyclery offers more than one way to see it all with bike rentals at the downtown shop. Take it up a notch—and see more in a day—by trying out an e-bike to get around faster. Don’t want to stick to Lodi? Take the backroads into Stockton or load up your bike for a starting point in another city. 312 N. Ham Ln., Lodi n The art scene in both Lodi and Stockton has erupted. For years, murals have decorated the sides of buildings, bringing color and flavor to the bustling downtown and surrounding streets. In Lodi, there was even quite a controversy caused by an ice cream shop mural not long ago. A map of the downtown murals in Lodi is available at the Downtown Lodi Visitors Center, 25 N. School St.

n Before leaving town, stop by Arts Commission Lodi and the Lodi Community Art Center to enjoy art in many mediums across two galleries. Also in Lodi, Studio 20 Fine Art Gallery boasts its own collection. n VisitStockton.com shares a directory of addresses for the city’s most popular murals. From colorful art at the Mexican Heritage Center to politically and socially charged commissions downtown, they all can be found by bike. More info: VisitStockton.org n While in Stockton, stop by the Brickwalk in Lincoln Center to ogle at the local works created by artists through Art Expressions of San Joaquin. The art group pops up in various locations throughout the county, teaching classes, displaying student art, and participating in events. The Catalyst is sometimes home to a hosted art class you can jump in on, while semi-permanent displays can be found at Mezzo Restaurant, the San Joaquin RTD, Office of Education, and more. More info: ArtExpressions.org n The Haggin Museum has a reputation as one of the best museums in the county—just ask our readers— and while many of the exhibits focus on local history and culture, there are no shortage of art displays both permanent and temporary throughout the museum. 1201 N. Pershing Ave., Stockton n A bit further west, downtown Tracy is an epicenter for murals thanks in large part to the Grand Theatre’s Downtown Tracy Mural Project. The project asked local artists to share their talents and paint large installations on the walls of the Grand Theatre. The works are still there for all to see. 715 N. Central Ave., Tracy

CITY GUIDE
n If you’re looking for more than home décor, Lincoln Center is the other go-to destination for shopping. The outdoor mall has high end fashions, adorable undergarments, and some entertainment (escape room, anyone?) n Lunch at Mimosa’s Gourmet, which offers more than that gargantuan mimosa you’ve seen patrons sipping on the corner of School and Elm streets. The outdoor seating here is best (although indoor has ample space, too) and regardless of time of day there are towering plates of delicious fare to be served. The restaurant’s other locations are in Las Vegas and San Jose. 117 W. Elm St., Lodi n Finding a glass of wine in wine country isn’t a difficult feat but securing a high-end cocktail that could easily be served in San Francisco is a little harder to come by in Lodi. Ollie’s Pub and 20 North next door, however, serve a list of rotating craft cocktails sure to excite. 22 N. School St., Lodi
CITY LIFE
n San Joaquin County offers a cool juxtaposition between urban culture and a quieter lifestyle. Its biggest cities, however, are hardly bedroom communities. Hiding in alleyways and sometimes in plain sight there are little luxuries that remind us of big city living right here in our little hometowns. Follow along to make a day of exploring these gems. n Start with a breakfast made for city dwellers. Ruby’s Bakery & Cafe in Lodi has two culinary experts—a husband and wife team—at the helm. They left their Bay Area roots and San Francisco pastry chef jobs to open a bakery in Lodi. The menu changes but you can’t go wrong with a loaded croissant. 11 Church St., Ste. B, Lodi n After morning fuel, it’s time to shop. Staying in Lodi, luxury home décor shops and specialty gift stores are making a name for themselves. Urban Barn, from the masterminds behind Corner Scone Bakery, sells gorgeous seasonal décor, luxury gift items, jewelry, and more. Other worthy stops include Wood & Wick, Olive Home, and Boxwood Finch, all with a touch of luxury.

n Looking to stay out late? On Fridays and Saturday nights, the best nightlife can be found at Blend Ultra Lounge. Open until 2 AM, drinks are served after hours and the ambiance echoes that of a big city club. 115 S. On select Sundays, Ave on the Mile serves a delectable brunch featuring chicken and waffles, French toast, and a breakfast sandwich that you shouldn’t pass up. Add in a DJ spinning sweet tunes while you down bottomless mimosas and you’re set for the best Sunday ever. 2333 Pacific Ave., Stockton

Mettler Vineyard
SIT BACK, SIP, AND RELAX WITH BEAUTIFUL
T
WINES AND GORGEOUS ESTATES
here are more than 85 wineries that call the Lodi AVA home. Most are settled into Lodi’s wine trail, which stretches to Acampo and encompasses wineries with many tricks and talents beyond the notable zinfandels produced in the region. With so many options, choosing a spot to sip at can feel like an impossible choice. If you’re interested in deep red Italian varietals and a lush garden to sprawl out on, Macchia, which carefully selects their grapes from California’s most prestigious wine growing regions and vineyards, celebrates with unique notes imparted in each wine. Their “Adventurous” Zinfandel, “Righteous” Barbera, and “Dangerous” Port benefit from grapes grown in a particularly spicy vineyard, for example. This stringent selection process ensures only the best grapes are used for each of their renowned varietals and make for an excellent drinking experience. At Oak Farm Vineyards, the grounds are like a sanctuary transporting you far away from the everyday hustle and bustle. The memories created here are as rich as the award-winning wine poured
at the Instagram-worthy tasting bar and on the picturesque patio. The varied experiences cater to both those who stop in for a casual glass of wine on a trip around the Lodi AVA and those after a more involved tasting, available by reservation. If you’re hungry, a small menu of cheese, charcuterie, and other small snack items is available. Mettler Vineyard boasts some of Lodi’s best wine—and most well distributed. Easy to find not just locally but even in neighboring states, a casual experience inside the gorgeous tasting room will make you feel like royalty as every touch inside suggests you’re sipping at one of the state’s most prestigious vineyards. Located just outside of town is Ironstone Vineyards. In Murphy’s—about an hour from Lodi—the sprawling estate is prime for picnics, concerts, events, private tastings, dinners, and more. Marvel in the details from the imported bar (that came by ship from New York and dates back to the 1800s) to the towering stone fireplace before diving into a lineup of reds, whites, and rosés. Expert Tip: taste the label’s zinfandels, made from Lodi grapes.
