editor's note

F

all is in full swing, and what better way to celebrate the cooler weather than by spending time outdoors with your favorite four-legged friend? Dogs enrich our lives in so many ways, and my Craigslist canine, Bullet, is no exception. Like most black labs, he has an

insatiable appetite (his human treat of choice being peanut butter), and although he was the runt of his litter, to me he is the smartest pup in town. Fetching the newspaper and bringing in the groceries are just two of his many talents that keep my family entertained on the daily. If you are thinking about getting a dog or adding a new addition to your canine clan, consider adopting one of the hundreds of thousands of unwanted pets who fill California shelters each year. Many local rescue groups include spaying/neutering, shots and micro-chipping in with the low adoption fee. This issue is packed with heartwarming rescue stories and resources to help you find your perfect paw-mate! Ladies, October is also a great time to take a break between summer vacation and the imminent holiday gatherings to focus on your health. Get the information you need from area specialists on the latest dermatology, fertility, and breast cancer treatments in this special women’s wellness edition. There’s no time like the present to check in with your body and get the professional medical advice that just may save your life.

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” Josh Billings

Were you stuck indoors working all summer? Now is the perfect time to take a much-deserved vacation, and the good news is one of the most desirable tropical tourist destinations is only a fiveand-a-half hour plane ride away! The island of Oahu awaits with plenty of soothing sunshine, miles of pristine sand beaches and unending salty surf to melt away those impending winter blues. Whether you opt for a romantic getaway or a little family fun, award-winning accommodations, culinary delights and cultural attractions abound throughout this island paradise. If you plan to stay put this month, there are tons of fall festivities from pumpkin patches and hay rides to haunted houses and Oktoberfests to keep your spirit young and your beer stein full. As always, we are thrilled to be part of the San Joaquin Valley community. Bullet and I will see you out on the town! Have an amazing autumn and a happy Halloween!

RETAIL RHAPSODY

FLEET FEET SPORTS BY MICHELE BIRD

If you’re looking for a store that meets all of your athletic needs, you’re bound to become a fan of Fleet Feet Sports. Founded by Sally Edwards in 1976, the company first started off in Sacramento. Since then, numerous locations have opened across the country. Fleet Feet Sports became a local staple after opening in Stockton on

April 1, 2005. “As a community, San Joaquin County was being underserved when it came to choices for a healthy, active lifestyle store,” said owner Tony Vice.   Health and athleticism are two key themes that tie into the products that are carried at Fleet Feet Sports. “My favorite products are the ones that work best for the

36

customers that we serve,” said Vice. “One of our strongest attributes is that we make everyone feel they belong to this culture of Fleet Feet, which is truly amazing and life altering.” Shoes, workout clothing, insoles, and bras are just a handful of fitness wear to choose from. “The name represents that our core product is footwear, but we are about more than just that,” explained Vice. There are also training programs, nutritional products, and injury prevention products in-store. “I like to say we are in the service business,” said Vice. “It’s not about the products, it’s about the knowledge we can share with our customer family.”   What sets Fleet Feet Sports apart from other stores is the experience that the staff provides customers. “It’s a very emotional commitment to our customers,” said Vice. “We have the desire to help everyone make personal, life changing decisions. Ones that will help them lead healthier, happier lives.”   Fleet Feet Sports sponsors many local marathons and continues to raise thousands of dollars in support of charities in the area. According to Vice, one of the biggest events Fleet Feet Sports is involved with is the Run & Walk Against Hunger which has raised more than $350,000 for the Emergency Food Bank along with over 15,000 pounds of non-perishable food donations. The next event to take place is the St. Joseph’s Medical Center Half Marathon & 5K on November 3rd.   What Vice enjoys most about working at Fleet Feet Sports is knowing his team helps people make life changing decisions toward a healthy and happy lifestyle. “It’s a transformative experience whether you are a newbie runner, walker or seasoned athlete,” noted Vice.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2013

After a visit to Fleet Feet Sports, customers will be ready to tackle their next athletic challenge. Whether you’re training for a marathon or gearing up for an intense workout, Fleet Feet Sports has everything an athlete needs. Not only will you be met with excellent customer service, there will be an even better selection to choose from.    “We have a passion for what we do (running and walking) and we share that passion with our customers,” said Vice.

“We’ll continue to build more events, offer training programs, and help our community start and continue to make healthy choices.”

HISTORY OF SAN JOAQUIN

L O C A L H I S TO R Y

PERRY & SON’S PUMPKINS BY RACHAEL KANNER Photos courtesy of the Perry Family

George Perry and Sons, Inc. began like many family business in San Joaquin County. It all started with Delphino Perry. He was an immigrant from Portugal’s Azores Island. He came to America as many individuals did with hopes of prosperity and a dream. His dream came to life in 1925 when he started a dairy and established a farm in Manteca. His enterprise was later expanded when his son George Senior joined the family business.   By 1963 the family decided to focus entirely on their farming and sold the dairy portion of their business. By 1965 the family’s attention turned to the cash crop of the day, watermelons and their close cousin pumpkins. In addition to pumpkins and watermelons, the family also grew and continues to grow and distribute many other produce. In addition to pumpkins, their fall harvest includes many

40

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2013

varieties of squashes and gourds. From the beginning of their pumpkin enterprise in addition to what their acreage produced, George Perry and Sons worked with local growers and farmers in order to expand and supply the ever increasing demand. Eventually this local family business has morphed into one of the largest shippers and handlers of both watermelon and pumpkins in the state.   As their distribution of pumpkins and watermelon industry expanded, the family also continued to develop their own acreage. Around this time they also established a fruit stand of their own. It was located in Manteca around the Highway 120 connect on Interstate 5. While the fruit stand predated the Highway 120 connect it eventually was discontinued in 1988.    Today, George Perry and Sons’ distribution network has expanded to include the majority

of large chain stores such as local Save Marts and Costco’s with their products. However they have also maintained their relationships with many local fruit stands throughout the county. Another customer Dell’Osso Farms located in Lathrop supplies their corn maze and numerous pumpkin activities with local pumpkins distributed by George Perry and Sons. In addition, George Perry and Sons donate pumpkins to the Manteca Pumpkin Fair where they also have a booth to raise money for Manteca youth.   While George Perry and Sons do grow their own products, they are mostly involved in numerous partnership relationships throughout the county utilized to buy from local growers and supply to local sellers. Their business has ensured that the pumpkins experienced in Halloween past and present are grown locally, disturbed locally and enjoyed locally.

KIDS? We kiss them, shower with them, sleep with them, feed them organic food, give them a taste of what we’re eating (or drinking), throw them birthday parties, play dress-up, take them to the park, even take them to the salon. No, they’re not toddlers; yes, they’re our children— but of the canine variety. Dog owners often claim that their dogs are just like kids, and pet parents here in San Joaquin County are of no exception. Just as with parents of the human species, try asking one to describe what makes their dog special— soon you may find yourself fielding phone calls from proud parents before 9 a.m., as I did. But are dogs really the “new” kids?

FUR-BABIES Since Americans are having fewer babies later, or not having them at all, it makes sense that there are now more dogs (78 million as of 2012, according to the Humane Society) in households than children under 18, just shy of 72 million according to the latest Census figures taken in 2010. And often, they’re enjoying equal treatment. Indeed, Sam and Sandy Young of say of their dog, “Our two grown children frequently state that we pay more attention to Mr. Bentley than we ever did them!” Adopting a fur-baby (yes, that’s what they’re really called) takes the dedication and time that only the love of a parent can provide. This can mean feeding it with a bottle, baking it special puppy food, outfitting WWW.SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

it in diapers and then hiding the diapers under cute little leopard print panties. Puppy gear that imitates baby gear includes carrying slings and jogging strollers, hand-smocked dresses and car safety seats. We take our fur-babies to daycare and to yoga classes, arrange play dates and throw them first birthday parties.   Take Terrie McNeese of Stockton, “After my son moved out and my daughter was about to move out, I decided that it would be nice to have a small dog. When I saw Lady she was only 4 weeks old and I knew right away that she was the dog for me; it was love at first sight. My kids are grown and I have no grandchildren yet, so she is my baby. Some would say I spoil her with love and lots of stuff toys. Yes, I do dress her up from time-to-time with little dresses I can’t help myself!”   According to a study at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, the relationship between SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2013

59

dogs and their owners bears striking similarities with the one between children and their parents. Both kids and dogs share the “secure base effect”, which places parents and owners as the “secure base” when the little ones explore unfamiliar environments. Also, the presence of a parent or owner boosts confidence and interactivity in kids and dogs; a phenomenon not so present when only a stranger is there. So it makes sense that humans might substitute the sense of fulfillment derived from being a human parent, or fill the void that children leave behind after they’ve left the nest, with being a pet parent. Says McNeese, “Even my mom talks to her like a grandchild and says, “Come to Grandma”. She is part of this family in every way.”    At Paw Prints Grooming Spaw, the Stockton salon where Lady receives her bi-weekly, all-natural blueberry facial, owner Jeanne Van Huystee says this viewpoint is typical among her clientele. A certified groomer for 25 years and the owner of seven dogs herself, Van Huystee says that she, her employees, and her clients all see their four-legged companions as children-- and treat them accordingly. “Spaw-time” is simply an environment allows the pets to relax. HydroSurge massages, aromatherapy, and paw-dicures complete with all-natural nail polish are de rigeur here, although Van Huystee has seen her fair share of outrageous requests— most notably from a client who requested her fur-baby’s fur to be trimmed into a full head to toe Mohawk, then dyed with animal-safe hair dye to resemble an iguana. “Polka dots, pink— we get it all. During football season we get asked to do nail appliques to represent their owner’s favorite NFL team.” Predictably, the Raiders and 49ers top the requests.

Just because you don’t dress your dog or take them to the salon or ferry them around in purses and strollers, doesn’t mean you’re not treating your dog in a decidedly human manner. Lina Cordoba’s Pomchi Rebbe has skied the slopes in Tahoe tucked away in her jacket, ridden the Northstar gondola up to the Ritz and sledded down the hill, camped many nights in Yosemite and has boated at Pine Crest Lake. Maxmillian, Dennis and Judy Goldtrand’s Shih Tzu, enjoys joining mom and dad at some of the fine Sonoma County wineries. Though he cannot drink, being under-age at 11 months, he still relishes the attention he gets from staff and other guests.    That the Goldstrands take their dog winetasting comes as no surprise to Helen Dart, who owns d’Art Wines in Lodi along with her husband Dave, and who’s dog, Abby, greets guests at the winery and tasting room. “Having her around brings a lot of a joy— she makes guests, and us, feel comfortable.” In fact, spurred by political satirist Jon Stewart’s dog-friendly workplace policy at Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, more and more dogs are finding their way into the workplace, which is good news for pet parents who feel guilty about leaving their kids at home alone all day. Purina has even started a movement, Pets At Work, to help facilitate pet-friendly work environments, which have been proven to reduce workplace stress and increase employee retention.

SO WHAT DOES THIS ALL ADD UP TO? ARE DOGS THE NEW KIDS? Maybe dogs are even better, seeing as they actually reduce stress rather than increasing it? One thing’s for certain: San Joaquin County pet parents take their job as dog owners seriously, and are seriously protective of their pooches. It’s the same way they are proud of all their children-- regardless of their species. Just remember: if you have something negative to say about someone’s fur-baby, don’t say anything at all!

Q: What makes the practice of Jules Vet unique? Jules Veterinary Center is a very busy practice that does our best to cater to client and patient needs above all else. We are here 7 days a week, and late into the evening 4 days a week to help our clients avoid emergency room visits and to accommodate our clientele that is forced to commute for work. Dr. Kecia Valdez is also very generous with the local rescue groups in the area, which is unique in veterinary medicine. We even just held our annual feral cat spay/neuter day that provides surgery, vaccinations, and flea control to about 150 cats free of charge to the community. Q: Describe the average Tracy pet parent.

Tracy overall provides care for their pets on par with the rest of the area. There is a range of income levels and bond of pets as family vs. a “backyard dog/cat” and disposable vs. working farm dogs. Everyone for the most part takes really good care of his or her “fur babies”.

Q&A WITH NATALIE OLSEN, DVM

JULES VETERINARY CENTER Q: What inspired you to become a veterinarian?

I knew from the time I was a very little girl (about 4 years) that I was going to become a veterinarian after losing a puppy to parvo virus. I decided then about my future career and never waivered or even contemplated changing my mind. According to my mom, I also quit playing with dolls and only played with stuffed animals from that point forward.

Q: How did you come to practice at Jules Vet?

I moved to California after veterinary school at Texas A&M University in 2006 and commuted to the bay area for the first year of practice. After that, I worked locally in Tracy (where I live) at a different practice for about 4 years before transitioning to Jules Veterinary Center. It was a matter of moving to a hospital that had a full time position open, but I am very happy that economics pushed me to make the change. Jules Veterinary Center’s staff, clients, and patients are amazing to work with.

We have different doctors with special interests in all areas of veterinary medicine. We provide general medicine, surgery (soft tissue & orthopedic), dentistry, radiology, ultrasonography, complicated internal medicine cases, hospitalization, etc. and also have an in-house pharmacy and laboratory for faster results and care. While we don’t have a specialist on staff, we do have access to specialty care when needed by calling in a radiologist, a surgeon or in some cases referral to a specialty center.

Q: What questions should pet parents ask

when trying to find a vet that will serve their needs best? First and foremost, do you and your pet “click” with the doctor and hospital and feel that you can establish a good relationship with them. It is imperative that you feel comfortable communicating with the staff so that we can provide the best possible care to your pet. It is also a good idea to talk to friends/neighbors for referral. They will tell you if they’re happy or not, but ask multiple people. Remember, just because one person does not like a practice does not mean that it won’t be a perfect fit for you. Behind communication and reputation, you have to take into account hospital hours, payment policies, and proximity to home.

Q: What is the most outlandish question or

request a patient/ client has asked? We get asked so many questions on a daily basis that may seem strange, but honestly, I try very hard to never think of them as abnormal because the only strange or “dumb” question is the one left unasked. If I was to answer, the question I was asked recently that made me laugh a little when I left the room was whether or not it was a good idea to share the owner’s medicinal marijuana with the dog to help with arthritis pain. That was definitely a first.

Q&A WITH JOHN LINDSEY, DVM

OAKWOOD VETERINARY HOSPITAL Q: What inspired you to become a veterinarian?

I cannot remember a time when I have not wanted to be a veterinarian. The first thing I said I wanted to be when I grew up was an animal doctor. And I have never said anything different.

Q: How did you come to practice in Woodbridge?

I recently joined the Oakwood Veterinary Hospital team because they have provided me greater opportunities to practice the integrative medicine therapies that I provide the animals to better their lives. Integrative medicine means combining conventional medicine with alternative medicines that compliment each other. They more fully allow me to decide how best to help these creatures live healthier and happier lives. It can be scary to leave a clinic you have been at for many years, but the opportunity was been more than worth it.

Q: What makes the practice of Oakwood Vet unique?

No other clinic in the Lodi area provides the services and the hours of operation that Oakwood Vet provides. We are open from 8:30 a.m. every morning until 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, until 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and until 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. We provide many services that cannot be found locally. Dr. Ruth Smith was excited for me to bring in the integrative medical therapies we now have. We offer acupuncture, Chinese herbs, some western herbs, and nutritional supplements to compliment the conventional therapies we provide. Conventionally, we offer comprehensive dental procedures including dental radiographs, ultrasounds performed by a board certified radiologist, surgeries including spays and neuters, soft tissue and orthopedic with a board certified surgeon available for the complicated surgeries, in-house diagnostics including blood chemistries, CBC analysis and various disease diagnostic tests, and full-service hospitalization abilities. We are also excited to announce that as of September we can provide therapeutic laser treatments with a state of the art, class IV cold laser. So we can provide many different treatment options to help pets recover and live healthy lives.

Q: What makes pet

parents in the Lodi area great to work with? We service mostly the Lodi, Woodbridge and surrounding rural areas, but we also have clients coming from the Stockton area. We see all types of clients, but my favorite clients to work with are the owners that consider their pets members of the family. These owners do what they can to keep their pets healthy and provide the best care they can.

be treated with Traditional Chinese Medicine including acupuncture. I have had very good results with acupuncture when dealing with arthritis, kidney problems, Cushing’s syndrome, seizures and asthma. I have also had some beneficial results with skin problems and stomach and intestinal issues. There are many other problems that I am willing to try this therapy option for. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs excel with kidney failure issues, actually sometimes improving kidney function but almost always bringing them comfort and maintaining their appetite. This is one area where Chinese treatments are better than Western Conventional medicine.

Q: Explain holistic medicine as it pertains to dogs?

Holistic medicine utilizes the principle that the organism as a whole is involved with any disease problems. The teeth affect the organs. Ear infections don’t just affect the ears. Conventional medicine as well as alternative medicines can be practiced in a holistic approach. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are holistic in nature. When we place the needles in the dog, the whole body responds. It treats the body as a whole, not as separate disease processes. My biggest complaint with conventional medicine therapy is that they break diseases and organs into different components that are not connected. Heart disease is treated independent from any other process in the body. Medical schools teach this way-for example, occasionally they will discuss how the heart affects the kidneys, but treatment for these two systems are still with different medicines. By looking at the animal as a whole the doctor can provide better medical treatments, which compliment both organs. All the doctors at Oakwood Veterinary Hospital tend to practice in a holistic approach.

Q: Outlandish question or request? One of the questions that always evokes a response from me is a myth busters question: Is my dog’s mouth clean? They then get what I call my toilet paper talk. I remind them that the dog samples things that they can’t control and that are often disgusting. I remind them that they lick their butts. Even little children understand when you tell them that dogs and cats use their tongues as toilet paper. So when you let them lick your face, they are rubbing ‘poop” all over their face. I encourage children to tease their sibling that they have a poopy face if they let the dogs lick them. The reason we discuss this is because dog and cat parasites go from their butt to their tongue then down our throats when we let them lick. But they really get it when they hear about the toilet paper tongue. Q: Is there anything else we should know about Oakwood Vet?

Yes, I’m pleased to say that Oakwood Veterinary Hospital strives to be the best full service hospital in this area, practicing quality integrated medicine and offering exciting new state of the art modalities including cold laser therapy and

From head to toe, a woman’s body is a beautiful thing, but as we age, we are constantly changing. We asked three local professionals some of the questions on the minds from residents living in the San Joaquin Valley.

CONCEIVING

infertility OF

While it has declined statistically in recent years, infertility still remains a very common issue throughout the U.S. According to the CDC about 1.5 million, or 6%, of married women 15-44 are infertile. And when discussing impaired fecundity (the ability to get pregnant and carry the baby to term), those numbers jump up to 6.7 million, or 10.9%.    For couples in the San Joaquin area, infertility is much more than just a statistic; it’s a very real concern. And they may not be sure where to turn to get the help they need, or what the process can entail.    According to Dr. John Kim, a fertility specialist with P. Gill Obstetrics and Gynecology, if you’re under 35, and a year of unprotected sex has not resulted in pregnancy, then you should consider meeting with a fertility expert. If you’re over 35, the clock is ticking as they say. In that case, you should move forward after six months of trying.    An initial meeting will involve a complete physical work-up of both the woman and man. For the woman, this involves a full pelvic exam, ultrasound, thyroid testing, a hysterosalpingogram (HSG, an X-ray test to examine the inside of uterus and fallopian tubes and surrounding area), and ovarian reserve testing to determine the clinical age of her eggs (which can differ from the woman’s actual age). The man goes through a thorough sperm analysis.    Dr. Kim has found that 20% of the time there is no apparent reason for not conceiving. Usually, though, there is. For men, testicular abnormalities, low sperm motility and sperm count are the most common causes. For women, they are ovulation dysfunction (irregular or no ovulation), tubal blockages and age. Abnormalities of the uterus can prevent an embryo from implanting properly, making it a common culprit for impaired fecundity.    Once the cause is pinpointed, then treatments to counteract the infertility can begin. With uterine issues, disruptive polyps or fibroids can often be easily removed through surgery. For ovulation problems, a series of pills can help regulate a woman’s cycle. Effective and with low incidence of side effects, the type most commonly prescribed is Clomiphene Citrate. Pregnancy often occurs within three cycles. But if that doesn’t work, Controlled Ovarian Hyperstimulation (COH) via a series of daily hormone injections is the next step.    Some of the other causes are not as easily overcome, and won’t allow for natural conception. According to Dr. Kim, the most important factor these days is the woman’s age. “More and more educated, professional women

are putting off having a family until they’re in their mid-30s or later,” he says. “But doing so creates complications that wouldn’t happen if they were younger.”    This is not a social commentary, but a biological fact. If you’re 35 or older, your chances of conceiving naturally become significantly lower as the number and quality of viable eggs drop off. That being said, the age issue--and tubal blockages, sperm problems or unknown causes--can often be by-passed through more advanced means:

INTRAUTERNINE INSEMINATION (IUI)

Otherwise known as artificial insemination, IUI is the most common option when the man’s sperm count or motility is too low to allow it to make the journey to the egg on its own. The woman starts a fertility drug regimen to stimulate ovulation. Then, timed with the ovulation, a man’s sperm is collected, processed and injected directly into the uterus.

EGG DONATION

While sperm banks have been around for decades, improvements in freezing technology have only more recently made egg banks a viable option. The process is the same as with sperm: choose the eggs you want, have them fertilized and implanted. You can even use your own eggs if you planned ahead when you were younger and had them “harvested” and stored until you were ready to conceive. Whatever the outcome, going through the infertility process is an inevitably emotional experience. It is a private matter made public, your body poked and prodded. And despite the fact that it’s an uncontrollable physical issue, there’s still the feeling that the infertility is somehow your fault. As long as you and your partner both go into the process with the same goals, no blame and the ability to communicate openly, you’ll come out the other end stronger than ever. And somehow the joy of having a child will be that much greater for the challenges you overcame to make it happen.

IN VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF)

More advanced than IUI, IVF is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment in which healthy, mature eggs are collected and fertilized outside the body. An embryologist prepares the eggs and sperm and allows them to fertilize in a controlled environment, either by placing thousands of sperm next to the egg or via Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), injecting the sperm directly into the egg. After a few days, the best embryos are collected and two to four of them are placed in the mother’s uterus. Ideally, both the mother and father will be able to contribute genetic material. But if not, that’s where sperm banks and now egg banks can help.

CANCER BY NISSA HALLQUIST

While death rates have fallen dramatically, breast cancer still remains the number one form of cancer in the U.S. (apart from non-melanoma skin cancer). According to the American Cancer Society, invasive breast cancer will strike 1 in 8 women (or 12%) during their lifetime. In 2013, they predict 232,340 new cases will be diagnosed, with 64,640 new cases of carcinoma in situ (DCIS, or Stage 0, the earliest non-invasive form of breast cancer). And about 39,620 women will die from it.    In California, this breaks down into 25,360 new cases in 2013, with 4,220 fatalities. Fortunately for women in the San Joaquin area, there are numerous resources available to fight back against this disease, including the renowned Breast Health Center at Doctors Hospital in Manteca, with teams of specialists on hand to take you from screening to diagnosis to treatment to recovery. Before all that, though, is there any way to prevent breast cancer in the first place?    In special cases, if there’s significant family history, you could get a blood test to identify inherited mutations in the two breast cancer genes--BRCA1 and BRCA2. Abnormalities of these genes indicate much greater risk of contracting breast or ovarian cancer. If you test positive for the abnormality, meeting with a genetic counselor will help you determine the extent of your personal risk and your options for reducing those risks, which very often turns out to be a mastectomy and/or hysterectomy.    A famous recent example of this was, of course, Angelina Jolie’s decision to have a preventive double mastectomy based on her family history and positive BRCA abnormality. While the decision was highly criticized by some, Dr. Jerry Weiner, a general surgeon in Manteca who specializes in breast health, points out that this was by no means an isolated decision. “Most women who test positive for this gene mutation decide to have mastectomies and hysterectomies,” Dr. Weiner says. “The chances of cancer are around 80%, and it usually occurs at a younger age and more aggressively than normal. And after seeing their mothers and grandmoth76

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2013

ers go through it, they don’t want their family or themselves to go through it as well.” (Before you get too worried, keep in mind that a hereditary BRCA mutation is extremely rare. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is responsible for only about 5% of breast cancers.)    For the rest of us, the best way to fight breast cancer is simply to find it and treat it early. There are five basic stages of breast cancer, Stage 0 through Stage IV (with subcategories in I, II and III). Each presents with a variety of specific characteristics, but essentially tracks breast cancer from its non-invasive beginnings in the breast (Stage 0) through the growth of a tumor and its spread to nearby lymph nodes (Stages I-III) and then, finally, metastasizing throughout the body (Stage 4).    Screening guidelines have been established to catch breast cancer and start treatment as early as possible, ideally no later than Stage I. Doing your own self-exams at home can begin at any time as an adult. In addition to the possibility of locating a lump, the hope these days is to start self-examination early so that you’re familiar with your breasts and notice any changes, whether an out-and-out lump or just an area of thickening.    Starting no later than age 40 (earlier if dictated by family history) self-exams should be complemented by professional breast exams and mammography. Altogether, these methods greatly increase chances of finding breast cancer early. If the results of a mammogram are abnormal, further testing (sonogram, PET scan) is required to isolate the cause.    If benign, the tumor is inherently non-invasive and can usually be removed with simple surgery.

But if it’s malignant, ongoing treatment is dependent on the stage of the cancer and the characteristics of the tumor. This includes tumor size (in proportion to the breast itself) and its type, classified as endocrine (estrogen or progesterone) receptor positive, HER2 positive, triple negative (none of the above) or triple positive (all of the above).    Treatment commonly starts with radiation (sometimes with neo-adjutant chemotherapy) to shrink the tumor as much as possible. After all, the smaller it is the easier it is to remove, with much less physical damage. Then, once the tumor has been completely extracted, follow-up radiation kills any cancer cells possibly left behind. The exact classification of the breast cancer will determine the appropriateness of any follow-up endocrine therapy.    Once the cancer has been completely removed via lumpectomy or mastectomy, the breast or breasts can be reconstructed. This can happen in a separate surgery after the mastectomy (delayed reconstruction) or even during the same surgery (immediate reconstruction). Once reconstruction is completed by a skilled plastic surgeon, you should feel as good as new...good and cancer-free.

Q. As a general surgeon, you could have gone in any direction. Why breast health? A. These days, everything is so advanced, it’s

nearly impossible to be a true general surgeon; you really have to specialize in fewer areas so you can focus your attention and stay up-todate. After I was in the central valley for a while, attended meetings and listened around, I learned more and more about breast health and became intrigued, both by all the advancements as well as the potential for treatment.

Q. How do you approach the

treatment of a breast cancer patient? A. I like to take a personalized approach.

After a primary care physician has conducted a mammogram, and the results come back abnormal, that’s where I can take over. I will review the mammogram and order additional tests if needed. From there, I will discuss the diagnosis with the patient and plans for treatment. Learning they have cancer can make a patient feel out of control. Telling them exactly what’s going on and giving them options in their treatment helps to empower them.

Q. Are there kinds of breast cancer that are easier to treat than others? A. About 2/3 to 3/4 of all breast

cancer is hormone sensitive, which means that it was derived from the same tissue as ductal cells. This type of cancer is more responsive to hormone therapy, making it generally easier to treat than cancers with hormone insensitivity (the type that is often genetically determined).

Q. After a lumpectomy or mastectomy, what are the options for breast reconstruction? A. You have a choice between

implants or Diep flap, which involves taking tissue from your own abdomen or the lower back (if there’s some to spare). Implants are quicker, but Diep flap surgery gives a more natural look without putting something foreign in your body. The surgeon performing the mastectomy can actually help prepare the breast for the plastic surgeon by performing a skin-saving mastectomy, removing just the inner affected tissue and leaving as much outer skin as possible (and maybe the nipple).

Q. What kind of trends do you notice in the area of breast cancer, say between now and 10 years ago? A. Things have gotten much

better. There is lots of money going into breast cancer research, due to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and others. So there have been great advancements in research, treatment and, especially, communication. Awareness about the disease has grown a lot. And women aren’t embarrassed to talk about it anymore, and aren’t as likely to ignore the symptoms until it’s too late.

SKIN BY NISSA HALLQUIST AND LINDSEY RODRIAN

If there’s one thing that we have plenty of in the San Joaquin area it’s sun. That’s why a lot of people come to California, after all. The hot, bright sun: providing power, helping plants to grow and encouraging outdoor activities, rest and relaxation. We love the sun. But when it comes to your skin, the sun can definitely be too much of a good thing.    Overexposure to the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the number one form of cancer found in women (beating out even breast cancer). More than that, it is the most common form of cancer in the U.S., period. 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed in 2 million people annually, more than breast, cancer, lung and colon cancers combined.    There are a variety of skin cancers, with varying degrees of severity. There’s Actinic Keratosis (AK, precancerous lesions), Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC, the most common type of skin cancer) and Melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Often resembling an innocent mole, melanoma moves fast, mutating quickly into malignant tumors.    Apart from skin cancer, the sun can also mistreat your skin in other ways, most notably in the area of aging. UVA rays penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, effectively weakening collagen and elastin, leading to deep wrinkles. UVB rays cause sunburn and can affect the surface texture of the skin. (Similar effects can result from other environmental factors like smog and chemicals in the air.)    Fortunately, these days you don’t have to just live with the damage the sun and environment can cause. As long as you keep an eye on your body and make a professional skin exam part of your routine, skin cancer is easily diagnosed and treated. And when it comes to reversing the signs of aging, the latest cosmetic procedures do so with a minimum of invasiveness or discomfort.    There is always the option of a complete face lift, of course. But if the idea of out-and-out surgery doesn’t appeal to you, there are less invasive means. Still the most popular option, Botox is injected under the skin, and reduces wrinkles by limiting muscle contractions. Or you have the option of going with injectable dermal fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, Artefille, and etcetera. These help reduce the appearance of wrinkles by temporarily filling them in, most popularly around the eyes and mouth. And, are really improving in quality and longevity, explains Dr. Stuart Jacobs of Stockton. For even less invasive means at home, topical creams that include Retin-A 78

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2013

help to both smooth out minor wrinkles as well as reduce acne.    Of course, you could reduce skin damage by stopping it from happening in the first place. Your best protection? One word: sunscreen. “Using a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least 15 SPF will protect skin from damaging UV says,” says Dr. Jacobs. Apply it liberally about half an hour before going outside (giving it time for the skin to absorb), and reapply at least every couple of hours.    For added protection, cover up as much as is comfortable; wear a hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Stay in the shade as much as possible, especially when sunlight is at its most intense, 10am-4pm.    Your day-to-day cleaning and moisturizing regimen also has a profound effect on the overall health of your skin. The best types of cleaners and moisturizers for you are dependent on your specific skin type--dry, oily or combination, normal or sensitive. As a rule though, unless your skin is super-dry, avoid oil. The best bets for most skin types are gentle, water-based products, preferably made with natural (hypoallergenic) ingredients that you can actually pronounce.

Q. What is the best SPF to use? A.

Well, SPF is changing, we are in a transition. Sun Protective Factor refers to UVB. rays, But, over the years we’ve found UVA rays are also damaging to the skin, resulting in skin disease and aging. The sun screens to look for are full spectrum and will protect you from both UVA and UVB. And always reapply every two hours!

Q. What are some warning signs of skin damage? A. Just take the time to look at yourself. We have a saying... “on your birthday check your birthday suit” really look at yourself, use multiple mirrors, check your whole body, the back of your thighs and your buttocks. Look for ABCD: A: Asymmetry. B: Border of growth, is it jagged? C: Color is dark, black and red, or gray. D: Diameter- a pencil eraser in size that can draw attention, E: Evolving, growing quickly.

Q. What do you consider dangerous aspects of tanning beds? A.UVA has significant

damaging effects. The dose of sunlight that a person gets is cumulative. If you go to a tanning bed, and also spend time outside in the sun, that is extreme over exposure. But, if you are going somewhere tropic, it is good to build a little bit of tan. That is the one time I say, “Okay, go get a little tan. It will help protect you.”

Q. How can you protect your skin against age spots and wrinkles? A. There are two things that

promote aging- sunlight and genetics. It all depends on your type of skin. If you are in the strong sun, there is no question, your skin will degenerate.

Q. Are there new advances in your field that you are particularly excited about? A.Our lasers and fillers are really

improving. Restylane is exciting because before that there was just cologen; which was extracted mostly from cows and didn’t last very long. The newest advances are very dramatic, much more natural, non surgical, and provide dramatic results, lasting from months to years.

SALIDA SURGERY CENTER

Children’s Dental Care While They Sleep 5712 Pirrone Road Salida, (209) 543-9299 www.SalidaSurgeryCenter.com Fear of the dentist is something many people face in their lives. Salida Surgery Center hopes to eliminate those fears by treating all children and families with respect as individuals, along with exceptional patient care. Founded in 2004, Salida Surgery Center specializes in dentistry for children and children with special needs. Surgery services consist of a complete oral and dental rehabilitation on every patient including teeth cleaning and polishing. Usually one visit is all it takes and the work is complete. General anesthesia is used, instead of the papoose board, to help children have a more relaxing experience. Education is a big part of Salida Surgery Center’s goal and every patient is given an information packet on proper brushing techniques to learn the best oral hygiene tips and snacks to eat. The office is Disney themed with Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Monsters Inc., and princesses. The bilingual staff, including the front office staff, dental assistants, nurses, and doctors, are welcoming to all patients. Salida Surgery Center is well-known for giving back to the community as they perform free dental screenings for children enrolled at local Head Start schools and including those in the rural areas of Stanislaus County. Students who participate in the screening are given a treatment plan, a bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, flosser and stickers. The goal is to help educate students and families on oral health. Salida Surgery Center ensures their patients know what to expect during their visit and hope children have less fear of the dentist by the time they leave. Hours of operation are Monday – Friday at 6:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Appointment times vary.

KIDS CARE DENTAL GROUP Children’s Dentistry

Stockton Office (209) 957-4386 3485 Brookside Rd., Suite 101 Outpatient General Anesthesia is recommended for apprehensive children, very young children, and children with special needs that would not work well under conscious sedation or I.V. sedation. General anesthesia renders your child completely asleep. This would be the same as if he/she was having their tonsils removed, ear tubes, or hernia repaired. This is performed in a hospital or outpatient setting only. While the assumed risks are greater than that of other treatment options, if this is suggested for your child, the benefits of treatment this way have been deemed to outweigh the risks. Most pediatric medical literature places the risk of a serious reaction in the range of 1 in 25,000 to 1 in 200,000, far better than the assumed risk of even driving a car daily. The inherent risks if this is not chosen are multiple appointments, potential for physical restraint to complete treatment, and possible emotional and/ or physical injury to your child in order to complete their dental treatment. The risks of NO treatment include tooth pain, infection, swelling, the spread of new decay, damage to their developing adult teeth, and possible life threatening hospitalization from a dental infection.

36 W. 10th Street Tracy, (209) 835-7446 www.tracyopt.com

Tracy Optometry has provided the San Joaquin area with quality eye care for more than 31 years. At once personable and professional, Drs. Moline and Yee aim to keep their practice on the cutting edge. As such, Tracy Optometry is currently the only optometry office in the San Joaquin area (and Sacramento) to have LipiView® and LipiFlow®, the only equipment available to diagnose and treat dry eye. Dry eye currently affects upwards of 50% of the American population. It is usually caused by improper blinking (correlations have been made to computer viewing habits), leading to dysfunctional oil glands and, ultimately, evaporation of tears. 90% of dry eye patients who have the LipiFlow procedure show marked improvement in symptoms and, if they keep blinking correctly, the results last for years. Left untreated, dry eye can cause permanent damage. So if you’re noticing dry eye symptoms--eye fatigue, fluctuations in vision or perpetual irritation--come to Tracy Optometry to have them checked out. Or, for more information, visit www.tearscience.com.

Closets BY KIMBERLY STREDNEY

With the onslaught of design shows cropping up daily on your flat screen, it seems Americans have officially become obsessed with transforming and organizing their personal spaces. But while many shows center around DIYstyle projects, there is often no comparing the finished product when a job is professionally done.   According to Bob Walker, owner of California Closets in Modesto, “It all starts with design. Our professional designers bring years of experience to designing a closet that is functional in a way most people can’t perceive, with a form that is also beautiful and pleasing.” He says they also provide new materials and accessories that are not available to the general public, such as

textured finishes, Ecoresin accents for cabinet door faces and drawer fronts, and unique hardware solutions.   Walker, who purchased the Modesto franchise 12 years ago, says he is “interested in helping customers simplify and organize their lives and making the process enjoyable and rewarding.”   The process begins with a 1-2 hour consultation at the customer’s home to discuss their particular needs. “Everyone is different in what they want and need,” Walker explains. “For example, some clients need a place for 50-100 pairs of shoes, while others have minimal requirements for shoes but need 10-20 drawers.” Once Walker and his team have an idea of what the client wants, it’s time to take the first look

and measure the space to determine the best way to make it happen. “If the customer is satisfied with the design and estimate, we schedule an installation date that is, on average, two to four weeks away,” he says. “The actual installation in most cases takes one day. We like to complete it quickly so the customer can get back into their closet.”   Not in need of a closet makeover? California Closets can also create home offices, garage storage, media centers, pantries and more. 106

Floors To Go KIMMEL INC.

BY KELLY SODERLUND

When a family-owned company has been in business almost forty years, it’s obvious they’re doing something right. For Floors To Go Kimmel Inc., that “something” is undoubtedly their reputation of dedication to customer service.   Floors To Go has been serving the Stockton area since 1976, and is the original Floors To Go store in what is now a national chain of over 300 privately owned businesses. Founded by Jake Kimmel, his son Jason Kimmel took over operations in 1989 and has carried on serving the Stockton area ever since.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2013

When shopping for flooring, many homeowners are unaware that they have options beyond the big consumer stores, where third-party contractors are pulled and liability is thrown out. One of the few licensed contractors left in the industry, Floors To Go cuts out the middleman— allowing a potentially stressful process to run smoothly from start to finish. Additionally, Floors To Go provides their customers a huge selection in choosing flooring brands and materials, including carpet, carpet tiles, vinyl, vinyl tiles, self-stick tiles, ceramic, stones, laminate, hardwood and more. The professional sales staff is trained in flooring needs, unlike a clerk who was in the paint department last week.   But Floors to Go doesn’t just specialize in material to be stepped on. Just like with the right flooring, the right window treatments will help make a space feel the way you want it to feel -- warmer, cozier, cooler, more elegant, and casual perhaps, but definitely a personal part of you! Window treatments, like your floor decor, are where fashion meets function. When choosing window treatments, think custom. It’s the best way to achieve your fashion goal as well as your

unique needs for comfort, safety and privacy. Depending on your selection, window treatments can also serve to insulate a home from heat, cold and noise all year. Floors and windows have jobs to do and they need to look great while doing them. Thankfully, Floors To Go can handle both. Estimates are always free, and should anything go awry in the process, owner Jason Kimmel is happy to make sure the job isn’t finished until everything is done correctly. After all, he’s got a reputation to keep.

OPTIONS FOR THE HOME

Air Tech Heating & Air Conditioning BY KELLY SODERLUND

Here in the valley, seasonal weather can oftentimes border on the extreme with freezing temperatures during the winters and triple-digit scorches in the summers. That means residents habitually rely on their heating, venting and air conditioning (HVAC) units to get them through those severe seasons, and if you happen to be one of them, it’s vital that you have a service company that you can rely on.   Family-owned and operated, Stockton’s Air Tech Heating and Air Conditioning Service Company has been serving San Joaquin County and the surrounding area since 1993. Committed to the community, they’ve built a reputation for their honest, dependable services. A Certified Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB), Air Tech is also a proud Better Business Bureau (BBB) Accredited Business with the BBB’s highest rating of A+, and has completed work for the Pacific Gas & Electric Company’s Energy Savings Assistance Program for over 10 years.   Owners Walt and Kim Prato, along with their son Alex and 110

daughter Amelia, in addition to their knowledgeable technicians, take pride in providing solid, quality service and workmanship. Walt has over 30 years of experience, and many of Air Tech’s technicians have been with the company for several years. Most importantly, Air Tech boats over 100 customers who have been with them for over 10 years-- and many of those have been with them since they opened their doors 20 years ago. States Kim, “Walt’s passion for the industry drives the business, while my own passion lies in making sure the customer is, and stays, satisfied.”   In fact, most of Air Tech’s business is garnered through word-of-mouth referrals— a testament to their obvious dedication in the level of services they are able to provide. Specializing in both new residential and commercial installations, as well as servicing preexisting systems, Air Tech always guarantees high-quality work at a competitive price. The knowledgeable and hardworking technicians take pride in their work— and they’ll never sell you anything you don’t need.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2013

“Our technicians are servicemen, not salesmen,” says Kim.   Providing quality installations and replacements for refrigeration, package units, condensers, coils, furnaces, mini ductless systems, heat pumps, air driers, zone systems, high efficiency systems, and more, Air Tech is able to guarantee that their customers stay comfortable year-round. Servicing San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Contra Costa, Sacramento, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Placer, and Yolo Counties, Air Tech also offers senior discounts and free estimates for new units.

From small repairs to replacement installations, Air Tech Heating and Air Conditioning Service Company is able provide you with fast, affordable services you can trust.

OAHU

Oahu BY DON AND ANN JACKSON

VIBRANT SOUL OF HAWAII

The Hawaiian Islands continue to be at the top of many folk’s wish list for a vacation and each island offers totally unique and different reasons to visit.

114

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2013

LOCATION: OUTRIGGER WAIKIKI

Oahu, the most populous island, provides a very unique diversity not found on the other islands and is often referred to as “The Gathering Place.” For years we’ve recommended visiting Oahu first before heading off to other islands. It may not end up being your favorite island but when considering the breath of things you can do and see it truly stands alone. No other island provides visitors such contrasting settings that should provide something to pique the interest of everyone in your vacationing party. Consider these: a modern cosmopolitan big city like Honolulu poles apart from nearby quaint fishing towns; a dynamic activity filled beach area like Waikiki in sharp dissimilarity to many other quiet secluded beaches around the island; the diverse fusion of eastern and western cultures; the native Hawaiian traditions surviving comfortably with our American heritage; and the ultimate contrast- bountiful natural pristine beauty within minutes of horrific memory filled World War ll sites.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO: Naturally on all the islands there are many similar things to see and do, such as a multitude of water activities, golf courses, botanical gardens, air and boat adventures to name a few. But for this article we want to concentrate on those things that are really unique to Oahu. Let’s start with touring Iolani Palace, the largest, most ornate and one of only two legitimate royal palaces on American soil. (The other much smaller palace is on the Big Island). The original Hawaiian monarchs were considered royalty by all reigning sovereigns of the world and were invited to most other nation’s regal gatherings throughout the globe for many years until the monarchy ended (iolanipalace.com). Attend a free weekly concert by the incredible Royal Hawaiian Band on the grounds of the palace, weather permitting. This great band has been playing concerts continuously since 1836, is America’s oldest concert band and only fulltime municipal band in the U.S. The concert we attended was first rate

and they performed over 350 concerts last year alone (rhb.org). Tour many of the sites at Kualoa Ranch, once the residence of kings, on the northeast shore. Jurassic Park, Lost, and other famous movies and television shows were filmed there (kualoaranch.com). Visiting Pearl Harbor and the ghostly U.S.S. Arizona memorial is a must. But maybe equally important is to tour the U.S.S. Mis-

souri, the battleship where the peace treaty with Japan was signed to end World War II. Even after three visits over the years, both remain amazingly nostalgic experiences for us as veterans (pearlharboroahu.com)! Tour the glamorous ocean side estate, SHANGRI-LA, built and owned by the famous heiress Doris Duke, recently opened for public tours in concert with a worthwhile

tour of the Honolulu Museum of Art. Known as the richest woman in America, Doris had one of the world’s finest collections of Islamic art and a life filled with amorous affairs, unfortunate tragedies and incredibly bizarre adventures. When we Googled her history we came to the conclusion that her life was a movie waiting to be produced (shangrilahawaii.org). Visit the Dole Pineapple Plantation and try to solve what they claim to be the world’s largest garden maze (doleplantation.com). Hike the incredible trails leading up to the tops of Diamondhead Crater State Monument and the lighthouse at Makapuu Point to experience some of the best vistas in all of the islands. From the lighthouse we had incredible views of breaching whales in the ocean below (diamondheadpark.org). Animal lovers will enjoy a walk through Honolulu Zoo, the only accredited zoo in Hawaii (honoluluzoo.org). Sea Life Park features entertaining dolphin and sea lion shows, sea turtle feedings, and an amusing penguin habitat (sealifeparkhawaii.com). An all day visit to the 42-acre Polynesian Cultural Center, owned by the Mormon Church and staffed mostly by B.Y.U.-Hawaii students on scholarship, is a must

excursion. Seven different villages provide authentic insights to different south-sea island cultures, games, activities, and offer the state’s only canoe pageant. Their award winning family friendly All’I Luau is the only luau sans alcoholic drinks and their fantastic evening floor show, “Ha: Breath of Life” is Hawaii’s largest and most extravagant production worthy of Broadway (polynesia.com).

MORE NIGHTLIFE OPTIONS: Unlike the other islands there are quite a few floorshows to consider in the Waikiki area. Magic of Polynesia, our favorite Vegas style spectacular, starred master illusionist John Hirokawa (magicofpolynesia.com). Society of Seven, Waikiki’s longest running show for over 40 years, is loaded with talented humorous singers performing energetic hits spanning many eras (societyofseven.com). Legends in Concert, an offshoot of the original Las Vegas show, still wows audiences with famous singer impersonations (legendswaikiki. com). One of our best surprises was the standup comedy show by local favorite, Bo Irvine (hawaiicomedytheater.com). He had us rolling in laughter! WHERE TO SHOP: Ala Moana Center, the largest and finest in the state, features nearly 300 restaurants and stores (from high fashion to beach wear), a lush tropical open air setting, and beautiful koi ponds (alamoana.com). Along high energy Waikiki is another great shopping area with everything from glamorous clothing stores to tee shirt shops. Royal Hawaiian Center is central Waikiki’s preeminent shopping complex (royalhawaiiancenter.com). One caveat: avoid the disappointing International Marketplace which has become just too tired to warrant a visit. This historic site is begging for a dramatic upgrade and major renovation-hopefully soon! WHERE TO STAY AND DINE: Here’s a list of our faves in a variety of areas and classifications after numerous Oahu vacations in recent years. At the foot of Diamond Head: Lotus, a stylish boutique style hotel located away from the crowds of the busier Waikiki beach areas, features wonderful views, complimentary evening wine hour, daily tea/coffee service, continental breakfast, beach cruiser bikes, and the

new highly touted Park Restaurant (aqualotus.com). Waikiki Central: Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach, long one of our top picks, is a recently renovated property with three of our favorite Oahu restaurants on site including Duke’s Canoe Club, Hula Grill, and Chuck’s Steak House. No resort fees, a nice fitness center, and their Plantation Spa are welcome features (outriggerwaikikihotel.com). New Beach Walk Area: Embassy Suites Waikiki is one of the crown jewels of this popular chain featuring all the great amenities you expect like complimentary full breakfasts, evening manager’s reception, and refrigerator/microwave in each suite. One major plus- if you like the exotic tropical cocktails like Mai Tais, they’re included in the reception (embassysuiteswaikiki.com). North End of Waikiki: The Ilikai Hotel and Suites, although an older property,

118

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2013

was the first hotel we stayed in years ago and a nostalgic connection remains. Accommodations are exceptionally large and the location overlooking the beach, marina and Ala Moana Beach Park and near Ala Moana Shopping Center is ideal. Special rate offers are often dramatically less then other local hotels with similar locations (ilikaihotel.com). Sarento’s at the Top of the Ilikai is a fine dining restaurant featuring an award winning wine list, traditional Italian cuisine, and astonishing views (sarentoswaikiki.com). Fabled North Shore of the Island: Turtle Bay Resort, another past and present personal choice, is the furthest resort from Honolulu and Waikiki and that alone is a major plus for many visitors. Nearby quaint towns, fantastic beaches, horseback trail rides along the beach where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed, a unique pony experience for children, and a gorgeous ocean front setting are hallmarks. Their new restaurant, Kula Grill, features farm to table cuisine (turtlebayresort.com). Other Lodging Possibilities: Into condominium stays? Well, Aston Resorts of Hawaii is the island leader in providing a wonderful variety of condo facilities within modest price ranges. Their Aston Waikiki Sunset is a three diamond resort located near the beach and Kapiolani Park and all of their one or two bedroom suites come with a complete kitchen (waikiki-sunset.com). Planning a meeting or conference? Hilton Hawaiian Village, based on previous conventions attended at this mega complex, is a no-brainer choice. Not checked

into the Village? No worries-just be sure to stop by any evening for an outdoor Polynesian show and fireworks display (hiltonhawaiianvillage.com). Love historic crème de la crème lodging properties? The Royal Hawaiian, affectionately known as the Pink Palace of the Pacific, should be earmarked for a future special occasion stay. Even if you don’t stay at the Royal be sure to stop by for a quick look at this classic beauty and have a drink in their legendary beach front bar (royal-hawaiian.com). More Recommended Dining Options: The Chief’s Luau, rated number one by Trip Advisor, is not surprising. Their pre-show positive interaction with attendees (especially kids), the show itself, friendly service, quality Hawaiian food presentations, and Sea Life Park setting all add up to a winner (chiefsluau.com). Looking for a local’s fave? Treat yourself to a Loco Moco Plate at the funky Rainbow Drive-In, owned by the same family for over 50 years (rainbowdrivein.com). Willing to travel a few miles for the island’s most popular breakfast? Then head up to Cinnamon’s Restaurant in Kailua for the island’s primo pancakes, omelets, and cinnamon rolls (cinnamons808. com).

INSIDER TIP: For the best car rental rate go to: discounthawaiicarrental.com. Not sure how they do it, but they surprisingly saved us nearly $100 on the bid we received from the same national agency. For tons more info on hotels, dining, events and everything Oahu: visit-oahu.com. EDITOR’S NOTE:

CRUSH IT STARTED AS A CRUSH…AND NOW LODI HAS A LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE UPSCALE CHIC RESTAURANT    Lodi has established a well-earned growing reputation in northern California for its wine bars and upscale dining options that have developed in the past decade. One of these options, Crush, has embraced the spirits of individuality and customer service to become a popular, sought after destination. “Our ambiance is warm and inviting, everybody is welcomed,” says Michael Warren, co-owner of Crush.

food&wine    “Our diverse clientele now includes farmers and agricultural workers to white collar workers, and they all feel at home.” One of Warren’s tips to maximize ambiance was basic—remove the table linens. “We have handmade stainless steel and copper tables,” he says. “So when you walk by you don’t feel under dressed. The natural flow of the restaurant design is noticed as soon as you walk in, along with our excellent customer service.”    Warren’s passion for customer service comes from his upbringing, where he learned the value of food preparation and quality service from his grandmother. And for the last four years, the guests of Crush have been the grateful recipients of those hand-me-down lessons. “My grandmother inspired me because she showed me that in the kitchen you make food with love and it tastes

different,” says Warren. “Our food is cooked with love and I personally make sure that our staff has a passion for our business. Our staff loves what they do, they are not just here for a paycheck.”    If Crush’s hospitality represents Warren’s ties to his grandmother, the upscale chic tone of the dining experience can be traced to being

raised in New York City, Brooklyn to be exact. “In New York City there is always something going on, and we take that same attitude with our style and our menu,” he says. “We grow our produce on our personal farm. This ensures that chickens have the proper diet, and we also are heavy purchases from local farmers to meet the needs of our seasonal menu.”    Crush’s seasonal menu changes often, ensuring the guests never receive the same experience twice. Warren describes the menu as “California flair with heavy, heavy Mediterranean influence,” inspired by his regular travels to Europe, especially Italy. “I am always drawn back to the Mediterranean because of the clean foods and the use of lemon juices and olive oil,” says Warren. “I travel there for 2 weeks every year to receive inspiration for new dishes.” With a menu that can have up to eight

minor changes in any given month, Crush offers an evolving aspect for its guests, but they also provide signature dishes that are constantly in demand.    The Arancini is one of the most popular lunch selections, featuring Risotto balls rolled in breadcrumbs and lightly placed on a bed of tomato conserva, topped with parmesan, basil and truffle oils. One of the most

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2013

popular seasonal items, a squash salad, is featured with this dish. A filling dinner entrée selection is the Kobe Bavette, a Kobe beef bavette served with roasted fingerling potatoes, summer squash medley, Madeira jus and a red pepper collis. “This is our down home signature dish that can be simple and stunning at the same time,” says Warren. “When you combine a down home meal with our comfortable, quality service, you really have a special dining experience.”    The dessert selection is definitely a part of that unique experience, led by the Meyer Lemon Tart. The tart is a house made lemon curd butter cookie topped with confectioner’s sugar and local organic blueberries. Not to be outdone, the cocktail menu at Crush is equally vibrant. They make their own simple syrups and use fresh juices, which are valuable to their original martinis and other specialty drinks. Along with their original drinks,

Crush has expressed a new level of originality with an age-old-snack— popcorn. Instead of bread and oils as an appetizer, Warrant began serving a unique style of popcorn that features cayenne pepper, nutritional yeast and butter.    “We wanted to offer something unique to say ‘thank you’ for visiting the restaurant, but at the same time get your appetite flaring for the real meal,” says Warren. “From the first bit of the appetizer until the last piece of dessert, you will know the experience at Crush cannot be duplicated.”

WINE PICKS

L OCAL L ODI THIS MONTH'S PICKS FROM THE LODI WINE AND VISITOR CENTER

If you’re reading this before the end of October 2013, there’s a good chance that Lance Randolph – the owner/grower/ winemaker of Lodi’s Peirano Estate Vineyards – is still wearing a pair of red shorts that he first put on at the onset of bud break this past April.

The “Legend of the Red Shorts,” as Lodi natives now call it, began over 20 years ago when Mr. Randolph first found some bargained priced shorts at a sporting goods store, and took to wearing them all during the summer while working his vineyard, which was originally planted by his great grandfather, Giacomo Peirano, in the late 1890s. Naturally, many of Randolph’s colleagues in the wine grape industry made fun of him – “especially my long skinny

legs,” says Randolph. To justify his fashion statement, Randolph began making the claim that he only wore red shorts “for the good of the community.”    Flash forward to November 1, 1997, when the weather forecasts were calling for cold weather with clear skies and “no chance of rain.” Already done with his harvest and feeling a little bit of a chill, Mr. Randolph removed his shorts and put on his jeans for the first time in seven months. About three hours later the sky suddenly darkened, and two inches of rain came pouring down. Randolph’s cell phone was also deluged – with messages from over 100 other growers, all asking the same question: “Lance, do you still have your red shorts on?”    After hearing his messages, Randolph ran home and slipped his red shorts back on. The rain immediately stopped. As it turned out, the final bin of Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon in 1997 was not picked until early December, at which time Randolph was finally able to don his jeans. Minutes later, it began to rain.   As it were, Mr. Randolph has also developed a great reputation among his colleagues for the quality of his wine: especially bottlings like his 2012 Peirano The Immortal Zin Lodi Old Vine Zinfandel ($14), which is almost stubbornly “old school” by its moderate weight – giving a smooth, balanced, perky feel – and the way it prickles the tongue with its soft, gushy, yet bright, high toned raspberryish varietal fruit, unfettered by drying tannin or any excess of alcohol or oak.   The Peirano estate’s 80 acres of head trained 118-year old Zinfandel remains the largest single block of own-rooted vines in Lodi – and the world, for that matter. Says Randolph, “Everyone knows that the Red Shorts do work – you just have to believe, like the way we believe in our ancient vines, and Mother Nature will always be good to you!”

Wine Tours & Tastings

The Lodi winemaking industry has enjoyed tremendous expansion in the last decade. The land devoted to vineyards has increased from 46,000 acres in 1996 to nearly 100,000 today. Now the region produces more fine wine than Napa and Sonoma combined! The Lodi appellation is proudly blowing away the mists of anonymity that have shrouded local wines, allowing them to bask in the sunshine of worldwide recognition. We invite you to take a short ride and discover Lodi Wine Country for yourself.

IN SEASON PUMPKIN & SQUASH

PUMPKIN & SQUASH BY MICHELE BIRD

The coming of fall means a whole lot of pumpkins and squash are on the horizon. From being used as decorative pieces to ingredients in recipes, pumpkins and squash have a diverse amount of uses. Many may mistake the two as they are strikingly similar in appearance. Other similarities include the fact that there are many shapes, sizes, and colors. Pumpkin varieties include Cinderella, Long Island Cheese, and Howden. Common hues are white, yellow, and orange. With Halloween right around the corner, pumpkins are commonly recognized for their use as jack-o-lanterns. Baby Boo pumpkins are small in size and perfect for young kids to decorate with paint or markers. Larger varieties of pumpkins are available and ideal for carving a spooky design. Be sure to take advantage of the leftover pumpkin seeds by roasting them in your oven. It’s definitely a treat that you will fall in love with. Another seasonal favorite that

126

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2013

shouldn’t be forgotten is the traditional pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Who says pumpkin pie can only be eaten during Thanksgiving? Squash also have a large list of varieties including Butternut, Carnival, and Delicata. Depending on the type of squash you choose, color varies from green, yellow, and orange. When preparing pumpkin and squash techniques such as frying, baking, steaming, and boiling can be utilized. Next time you pick up a pumpkin or squash, try to expand outside of the common decorative uses during Halloween and Thanksgiving. These two ingredients add the perfect twist to any meal and a fall flavor your mouth will savor after. Find the variety that suits you best and start cooking up a storm! Whether you’ve got a sweet tooth or want some hearty pasta, pumpkin and squash are essentials to every recipe this season.

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Peel and chop squash, then lay on a baking sheet. Toss with olive oil, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Roast for 20 minutes, flip once, then roast for 20 minutes more. Remove from oven and add squash to a bowl, then mash with a potato masher or fork. Prepare water for pasta and cook according to directions. While pasta is cooking, heat a medium saucepan over medium heat and add butter and shallots. Whisk continuously until the butter browns and small brown bits appear in the pan. Immediately whisk in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Add milk, mascarpone and mashed squash, then mix until combined. I chose to keep my “sauce” in a thicker state (see the second picture), but if you’d like it thinned out a bit more, add additional milk. At this point, taste and see if you’d like any additional salt or spices – this will most likely depend on how seasoned your squash was. I added another small pinch of salt. Add pasta to an 8 or 9-inch baking dish. Pour sauce over top, then use a spoon to fold the sauce into the penne, coating it completely. Top with shredded cheeses and fresh sage leaves. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until cheese is golden and bubbly. Garnish with crumbled bacon if desired. NOTE: This is a very “thick” pasta, and it is not swimming in sauce. If you would prefer it to be “saucy,” I’d advise adding more milk to the sauce while cooking. It is great re heated, and adding 1-2 tablespoons of milk when reheating helps it come together nicely.

No Cost For Medical Clients. THE BENEFITS OF PERMANENT COSMETICS. Permanent cosmetics represent an investment in your appearance. People with unsteady hands, less than perfect vision, or a demanding lifestyle need not struggle with an extra time and effort required to apply topical makeup. Reapplication throughout the day will no longer be required to maintain the desired look and overall appearance. When your face is radiantly fresh with permanent cosmetics, mirrors become an unnecessary accessory.

FINAL THOUGHTS

THE $10K

BLACK

LABRADOR BY KELLY POLLARD

This is what I know. A dog is the key to a life in suburbia. She is just as important to a household as a yard big enough for birthday jump houses and couches long enough to accommodate NFL viewing parties. My husband and I adopted Sadie, a hyperactive Labrador puppy with a blocky head and shiny brown eyes one month before we married. Sadie was the first pet that I was totally responsible for, essentially my first child. I quickly learned, costs of owning a dog went beyond dog food and adoption fees.   During our honeymoon year as a newly formed family, Sadie developed a quick appetite for pricey running shoes. This stoked a growing appetite for destruction that new chew toy could

remedy. People assured us she would outgrow this stage. She graduated to chewing up fabric porch swings, an entire hot tub cover, an entire sectional couch, and in one comical farce, a down pillow with feathers spread like a blizzard across our yard. Nothing was off limits to her, including one complete demolition of a thorny rose bush.   When my

sons were born, she tore into vast collections of stuffed animals, wooden blocks and dirty diapers. She learned the art of perching right at their feet dangling from the high chair and accepting all foods tossed her way, much to my boys’ delight. She grabbed loaves of bread and entire pizzas from the counter. She was a stealth ninja, closing in on whatever she wanted the moment I left a room. Of course we adored her despite her naughtiness.   When Sadie was just four years old, she injured her leg in our yard. With a torn ACL, we learned about the surgery, the insane costs, and the six week recovery complete with the cone of shame. This also coincided with us freshly moved into our new house with a toddler and infant in tow. We paid cash for the surgery and crossed our bathroom remodel off our list.    What she cost us in debt, she returned one hundred percent in her loving

nature with our exhausting sons that clambered all over her like she was a furry jungle gym. She lay devoted at my feet during my most overwhelming moments as a new mother. Her presence made me feel safe on the nights when I was alone at the house. She joined us camping, hiking and on road trips. She is family. Sadie is thirteen years old now. Instead of rejoicing in hours of destruction, Sadie is content to spend afternoons sleeping at my feet while I write on my computer. Her muzzle has faded from glistening black to a coarse gray stubble. She still wears her gleeful dog smile when we come home every night. Her eyes still shine with total trust and unconditional love. And her every breath is worth all the time and love and money we’ve invested in this dog. I say she is the $10K dog, but quite honestly, she is priceless.
