VIRTUALLY YOURS
Why scrapbook your entire Big Day from memory, when you can archive all the memories online from the instant the question is popped—and with technology being what it is, you might be able to broadcast that moment, too. Personalized wedding websites from Nearlyweds make the actual event planning not only creative, but also fun and manageable. Features of this comprehensive website service include unlimited photo space, hundreds of designs, and online RSVP and gift registry. www.nearlyweds.com
10 WAYS TO CELEBRATE CHARITABLY • Celebrate with locally-produced organic wines.
• Combine your honeymoon with a volunteer vacation. • Donate flowers post-celebration to a local nursing home, assisted living facility, or hospital. • Deliver leftover food to the Emergency Food Bank of Stockton/ San Joaquin. www.stocktonfoodbank.org • Ask your vendors to donate a small portion of their fee to a local charity of mutual concern. • Plan a service project for your wedding shower. • Recycle your wedding dress through a non-profit bridal boutique. • Repurpose second-hand items in your style to be used as treasures for your reception. • Request guests to recycle used invitations, save-the-dates, and paper products. • Set up a donation gift registry through the I Do Foundation. www.idofoundation.org

TREE’S COMPANY
Whittling down the wedding guest list, not to mention tracking the actual guests, is tough enough for the bride and groom, but how about for all those attending out-of-towners who don’t know Aunt Judy from Cousin Sara until they awkwardly bump into one another on the dance floor during “Ladies Night”? If you need a flow chart to keep your sanity intact, gift yourself with a Wedding Genealogy Tree from Melangerie. Customized to fit a couple’s individual aisle style, this handcrafted Who’s Who serves an actual function (identifying the cute guy seated at table 10, for example), while doubling as a delightful keepsake heirloom. www.melangerienyc.com

Destination Kauai
One Island, Four Honeymoons by Jennifer Thornton | all photos courtesy Assaulted by a swift onslaught of shivers, I emerge from the icy lagoon. Whose idea was this again, I ask myself, before identifying the culprit—my meteorologist husband, who is braving the sub-zero temps with a casual backstroke and a zeal I fail to muster. He beckons to me from behind a 500-foot curtain of water cascading down the moss-blanketed mountain we trekked seven miles through unmarked jungle and muddy damp to see. Egged on by the catcalls of locals sunning themselves like lazy geckos, and giving no indication that I once swam competitively, I slap at the water and melt into the warming fold of my husband’s giddy embrace. Due to either numbness or his sweet, encouraging pecks, I no longer feel the cold. In fact, it’s suddenly kind of hot.

Church In Hanalei
And that’s Kauai—an atoll of many moods enveloped in clouds of mist and an effusion of easy island cheer that in moments can transport you from where you think you are to another place entirely. The most verdant of all the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai is 82 miles of indigenous calm that has, unlike the more popular oases of Oahu and Maui, avoided the influence of tiki-tacky tourism. While you can still find statuettes of be-bopping hula girls for the dashboard on Kauai (thank goodness), travelers come to this moony Pacific islet for a more authentic island experience, which they find in a quartet of distinctively different but equally spectacular shorelines.
ITINERARY 1: THE NORTH SHORE
String up a hammock, you’re on the North Shore of Kauai. This dreamy outpost is Eden on the Garden Island. Unhurried surf alcoves, golden beaches, and rustic wilds marked by spidery trees, spiny overgrowth, and shimmering jewel-toned seas frame this picture-perfect testament to idyllic island life, one that resembles a quiet morning in Southeast Asia, an elegant dusk in French Indochina and, at all other times, the most beautiful hippie commune you’ve ever seen.
Stay: Enjoy the secluded and airy
accommodation of Bird Song Cottage, where not only will you get what’s advertised (a rousing chorus of chirps at 6 a.m.), but a brilliant way to economize with a kitchen
for cooking. And that outdoor shower? Very Balinese. www.kauaibirdsongcottage.com
Shoestring activities: Ride the morning
waves at Hanalei Beach; gorge on gargantuan island produce and a world-famous frosty at Banana Joe’s Fruit Stand; spot monk seals and seabirds from the Kilauea Point Lighthouse; snorkel at Secret Beach (the “secret” is out, by the way); marvel at the sunset from the grassy knoll to the right of the Princeville Hotel, famed for its “Bali Hai” view; and count your blessings at the Wai’oli Hui’ia Church and Mission House.
Splurge on: Shopping and dining in
Hanalei, home to Wishing Well Shaved Ice (look for the colorful van and the beach bums), the minty Mojitos at Barracuda, and artsy curios at Yellowfish Trading Company. Or, hop a catamaran for a sunset cruise to the spectacular Na Pail Coast (the best touring outfits are not usually advertised, so ask a local for the most reputable). Those with stamina and skill should opt for a kayak tour of this rugged coastline that allows you to explore otherwise inaccessible sea caves.

Kauai’s centrally located “Coconut Coast” is an excellent home base from which to explore all sides of Kauai. But even this socalled “hub” is low-key. By urban-dwelling standards, the traffic is next to nothing, but to locals, it may as well by 5 p.m. on the Bay Bridge. This stretch boasts plenty of economical lodging, including one property of legit notoriety, sweeping beaches, and one of the island’s best-kept secrets.

ITINERARY 3: THE SOUTH SHORE
The South Shore of Kauai offers the island’s biggest dose of “resort” vibe. Here the air is heavy with aromatics and blooming exotics. It’s gorgeous, and so are the luxury hotels, many of which are windowed top-to-bottom with glass to let in the majestic views of the azure seas just steps away. The South Shore is the most outright touristy area of Kauai, but with a bent of surprise.

Kauai’s underappreciated Westside remains under the radar for its rugged, frontierlike appearance, which is earthy, dusty and unpolished. “I DO’S”
Destination Kauai
Because even Happily Ever After begins with a plan, the following destination wedding tips will put you eight steps closer to the altar. BUDGET REALISTICALLY: Know exactly what you have to spend, and what your guests can afford. Marrying abroad is not always the least expensive option, so monetary considerations must be a given, after which a nonnegotiable guest list should be compiled. CONSULT AN EXPERT: Hire a destination wedding planner to help navigate the cultural landscape, translate legalities, and facilitate details. CONSIDER CUSTOMS: Not every country recognizes civil ceremonies, for example, and only permits couples to marry on certain days, so do your homework. DON’T PROCRASTINATE: A far-flung wedding requires time management. Translating and processing required documents takes time in other countries, so don’t wait to get started. POST THE DETAILS: Design a simple website with wedding details, required paperwork, and links to travel deals for guests. UPDATE DOCUMENTATION: Be aware of a country’s passport laws, and make sure that wedding guests have plenty of time to update their paperwork if necessary. ARRIVE EARLY: Don’t leave anything to chance, and we’re not talking about jet lag either. Land at your wedding locale at least two days before the wedding to finalize any lingering details. GET A WRITTEN RECORD: Make sure that you have a written confirmation of all agreements prior to payment.

MaTT & KriS
Tornquist
October 16, 2010 Oak Farm Vineyards, Lodi Prior to tying the knot with wife Kris, who selected Oak Farm Vineyards as the wedding and reception venue after first spotting it in the pages of San Joaquin Weddings magazine, Matt Tornquist was hopelessly infatuated with the Green Bay Packers. His passion for the team not only served as the catalyst to the newlyweds’ favorite “couples” moment—Kris surprising Matt with a trip to see the last game for the Packers’ then quarterback, Brett Favre—but also played significant minutes in their wedding. Kris, who designed the entire wedding concept, had a special groom’s cake customconfectioned in the shape of a Green Bay Packers cheesehead, and a cake-topper made in the couple’s likeness. Matt and Kris’s friends also got in on the field day. One penned the wedding script, another officiated the ceremony, and pal Jamal sang a “second” first dance for the couple. These moments were topped only, perhaps, by the bride belting out Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing,” her rap to “Toot It and Boot it” (with vocal back-up from Mom), and the “sweet moves” of her 81-year-old grandmother. —J.T.

Zachary & Jillian Brink September 19, 2010 Viaggio Estate & Winery, Acampo “The moment we faced each other and said our vows, we laughed, but just because we were so happy to finally take the ‘next step’ after nine years together,” says Jillian Brink, who, on an expanse of lawn overlooking the Mokelumne River at Viaggio Winery, married her long-time love, Zachary. The backdrop was not only idyllic for the start of Happily Ever After, but also reminiscent of the moment Zachary and Jillian, who both love the sun and specifically wanted outdoor nuptials, first fell in love. It was, ironically, at a friend’s wedding, where they walked far out on a lawn to talk and realized that they were extraordinarily happy in one another’s company—more blissful than they had ever been. Right up until their own wedding, that is. “After we said ‘I do’ and walked back down the aisle, we were greeted by two stilted ladies,” recalls Jillian, describing a Big Day full of surprising moments, which includes sharing her first dance with not only Zachary, but crooner Frankie Valli singing “Can’t Keep My Eyes Off Of You,” and the entire wedding party, who joined the newlyweds in celebration on the dance floor. —J.T. 48

October 10, 2010 Bare Ranch, Lodi Lisa and Daniel met through mutual friends and, right off the bat, sparks flew. They took their time and dated for six years until Daniel proposed one July while the couple was vacationing in Aptos. “I had a feeling it was going to happen but he swears there was no way I could have known,” Lisa says. The two had another surprise three months later when Lisa discovered she was pregnant. From there, wedding plans were a little stressful. “I was pregnant and working and trying to plan the wedding. I wanted to do everything myself so it was a lot of work.” One year later (and three months after the birth of little Gianna), the couple happily wed at Bare Ranch in Lodi with a colorful autumn ceremony. Their fall color scheme included chocolate colored dresses with champagne sashes, and bouquets glowing with shades of red, pumpkin, and marigold. Lisa says her favorite memory from the reception was dancing with her dad to the song “I Loved Her First” by Heartland, and seeing her dream wedding become a reality. —K.B.

Jason & Desiree Gapasin Ladiao May 29, 2010 Church of the Presentation, Stockton Jason and Desiree were friends for several years, but it took a football game for them to discover that they were actually a perfect pair. “The big turning point was at a Raiders game where we had our first kiss. We had known each other for years but didn’t see each other in that way. When he kissed me I thought, ‘Ohh, he likes me.’ After about a year, the two were engaged, and only took five months to plan their wedding. The décor was jewel toned, with rich deep purples and accents of silver, gold, and ivory. Guests enjoyed a memorable moment at the ceremony when, while repeating his vows, Jason accidentally said “In bad and in bad.” Nearly 300 guests laughed, and Desiree says she was thankful for the comedic relief which kept her from crying. Later on, Jason turned to Desiree and said, “Well honey, it’s easy to love someone in the good times. But it’s harder to love someone in the bad times. At least you know that I’m going to be there—even when things are two times as bad.” —K.B

Joe & Dana
Stacher
October 17, 2009 Vino Con Brio, Lodi Dana and Joe had been dating for four years when they decided they wanted to stay together for better or for worse, but unfortunately, Joe could not afford a diamond—or at least that’s what he told Dana when he teased her. “He was messing around and saying he wasn’t going to get me anything because we couldn’t afford a diamond and blah, blah, blah. Then he said, maybe I’ll take a couple of rocks and bang them together and hope it makes a diamond.” With that, Joe went into the garage to literally bang rocks together, making a ruckus. But when he came back into the house, he had a beautiful diamond ring, which he bought by selling his old Chevelle, the car he had since he was 18. The two were married at Vino Con Brio in Lodi and described the wedding as one big party with lots of great music, dancing, and even games. They finished the celebration with a honeymoon to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. —K.B.

Greg & Jackie
Sensibaugh
July 3, 2010 Harmony Wynelands, Lodi Jackie’s mom was working at a local school as principal when she had the idea of introducing her daughter to P.E. teacher Greg Sensibaugh. Mom must have had a sixth sense because the couple was engaged after only six months of dating. The engagement was casual and the two picked out the ring together. Since Greg was in the military, along with several other close family members, the couple decided to add a splash of patriotism to their summer wedding with a Fourth-of-July theme. The flowers were light blue hydrangeas and red anemones, the menu was BBQ-style with corn bread and barbecued tri tip, and the couple even enjoyed their first dance surrounded by glimmering sparklers, held by the guests around the dance floor. The table which held the dessert buffet and wedding cake also held various wedding photos from the bride and groom’s parents, grandparents, siblings, and cousins, involving the whole family in their special day. —K.B.

October 16, 2010 Woodbridge Country Club, Woodbridge Karen and Marcus were high school sweethearts for three years until going separate ways after graduation. Fifteen years later, the two reunited and haven’t been apart since. Their wedding was an elegant affair, and according to Karen the planning process was fun. But her favorite memory happened before the nuptials. “We chose to see each other before the ceremony so we could take pictures and our guests wouldn’t have to wait later on. Our photographer took us where it was secluded, and I came up behind Marc and tapped him on the shoulder. We saw each other for the first time and it was the most magical moment ever. I was okay with crying because I knew nobody was there, just him and I. It was our moment.” The couple also put anniversary cards on all the tables to be signed by their guests. Every year they will open one card from a different table. On their 25th anniversary they will open a special card signed by themselves and see what they wrote to each other on their wedding day. Karen and Marcus will be able to relive their beautiful wedding for years to come. —K.B.

Jonathan & Francesca
Canote
July 23, 2010 Wine and Roses, Lodi “When Jon gave his wedding speech he started by saying that when he first met me he hated me,” says Francesca. “I always thought he was really cute. But I guess he didn’t think the same thing about me!” Of course, eight years of getting to know each other changed things, because the two eventually got engaged. While planning the wedding, the couple (both from large Italian families) had the table numbers written in Italian and played “That’s Amore!” during the cake cutting ceremony. They also had the two accordion players who played at Jon’s parents’ wedding play traditional Italian music throughout their ceremony and reception. The wedding itself was very elegant, decorated in black and white with vibrant yellow accents, giving it a sophisticated yet fun look. Their officiant was Jon’s uncle, and Francesca wore jewelry that belonged to different women in her family, like her great-grandmother’s rosary and her grandma’s earrings. She also placed a pink rose in her white bouquet for a friend who had passed away. The couple says the best part of the day was seeing both their families together in one place, having fun. —K.B. 60

May 30, 2010 The River Mill, French Camp Rebecca and Michael joined the rapidly growing world of online dating in 2007. After about two months of getting to know one another, they decided to meet in person. “We really liked each other right away. It was a little different seeing him in real life, but the chemistry was already there,” says Rebecca. In December of 2008, Michael surprised her by having a street performer at Pier 39 in San Francisco pull her on stage. In front of the audience, Michael took the magician’s microphone and proposed. It was a joyful surprise, but soon after the engagement, Michael learned that he was to be deployed to Afghanistan for ten months. The couple postponed their dream wedding for almost two years, but it was worth the wait. In May of 2010, the two were finally able to celebrate their big day. “The whole wedding was awesome and above my expectations. Michael surprised me and wrote these amazing vows that took my breath away. That was one of my favorite moments.” Guests also received personalized match books as a nod to Match.com, the website where they met. —K.B.

Nathan & Andrea
F agundes
July 16, 2010 St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Tracy When Andrea and Nathan started first grade together at the tender age of 6, who knew that the two had already met their match? But years later, after grade school, high school, and college, Nathan surprised Andrea with breakfast in bed, followed by a ring. After the proposal, a limo pulled up to take the couple for a romantic adventure in San Francisco. Since Nathan was becoming a paramedic and Andrea was finishing law school, it was crucial that the wedding plans didn’t give the couple any added stress, so they talked about the wedding over glasses of wine to keep it fun and relaxed. But their best memory of the big day was spontaneous. “I was in the middle of dancing and Nathan came to pull me away. We went and sat down and shared a glass of champagne. We were faraway and secluded but could still see everyone. We got to talk and we promised each other we would never forget the moment; where we sat and who we could see, and that is our favorite memory.” —K.B.

but in the midst of planning a wedding, you should be forgiven for not squeezing in enough time to change your address labels—a very minor trespass if one at all. If, however, you are tardy with your thank you notes (three weeks should be your benchmark, two if you can swing it), and it has been a month since the wedding, handwrite your return address if necessary and use your husband’s last name. Q: Am I expected to fulfill special dietary requests for guests who ask? A: Pickiness is one thing, but a serious food allergy or dietary restriction for medical purposes should absolutely be acknowledged, and, if possible, accommodated without fuss. Most meal modifications are relatively minor and requests for them are few; the majority of caterers will usually offer different options to their clients, so ask if necessary.
Wedding Q&A
Etiquette
Advice and answers to your most pressing questions by Jennifer Thornton
Q: Do I send a thank you note to a guest who attended the wedding but did not bring a gift? A: Absolutely. The economy has changed gift giving, but it is still important to sincerely express your gratitude. If said guest is a millionaire, you have the right to be irked, but presence is a present and deserves to be recognized for what it is. And no preprinted cards, thank you very much. Handwritten notes are the most personal way to express graciousness. Q: Is it appropriate to affix a return label to thank you card envelopes with my maiden name still on it? A: Apples and oranges. It is doubtful that anyone will call the etiquette police two weeks after the wedding because you are using old labels. Traditionalists may be more prickly about this, 68

Q: My Maid of Honor “tweets” constantly, and I’m afraid she will do so during the wedding. How should I ask her to refrain? A: Kindly and firmly at the same time. Sadly, technological distractions are becoming more prevalent at weddings, so here’s what you do: Rather than single out one person—even though the offender will no doubt be obvious—express to all of your Maids that your wedding day is personal to you and the groom. Politely ask them not to text or update their Facebook status during the wedding. Your Maid of Honor should respect your wishes, and if not, perhaps it’s time to delegate her duties to someone else who will. Q: Is it tacky to ask for cash instead of gifts? A: Outright, yes. But this is where word of mouth comes in handy. Express to a few guests your gifting preference, and let them spread the word. Some guests will want to mark the occasion regardless, so take a quick inventory and set up a simple gift registry with some practical items you can really use—just in case. Q: My husband and I are throwing a belated wedding bash because we never had a ceremony but were married a year ago. Should we ask for gifts? A: In general, guests should not be expected to bring a gift for a reaffirmation ceremony. Many will anyway, but the expectation is not appropriate in this case. Perception plays a big role in this situation. Since you have been married for one year, setting up a gift registry looks a little greedy. Graciously accept gifts from those who bestow them, and appreciate others for the gift of their friendship and love.

• idEntiFy youR nEEdS: Simple backyard weddings may call for a do-it-yourself bouquet of wildflowers and a discreet boutonniere, while formal occasions of size usually require a long list of intricate florals for everything from groomsmen and ring bearer corsages to botanical-rich tabletoppers and cake-accenting rose petals.
