Wedding

TRENDReport

In recent years, muted color palettes and outdoor spaces have reigned supreme for San Joaquin County brides as au natural has been perhaps the biggest trend to follow, but trends are constantly evolving, and 2017-2018 nuptials welcome changes that affect every aspect of the wedding planning process. Industry experts note a return to bold color palettes and metallic bridesmaid dresses in addition to a continued move toward fall and winter nuptials. Brides desire to stay ahead of the curve, planning events that feel refreshed instead of following tired trends of year’s past. Check out our picks for the most notable up-and-coming wedding crazes to wow guests at your upcoming event.

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

ENTERTAINMENT FOR GUESTS.

Weddings are becoming interactive affairs. Not many receptions will require guests to simply sit and watch before dinner and dancing commence. Instead, couples are choosing exciting forms of entertainment for guests. Whether it’s acapella tunes played live during dinner, a cirque style mini-show, or lawn games and make-your-owns’mores during cocktail hour, brides and grooms are getting a lot more creative when it comes to keeping guests engaged.

 BY NORA HESTON TARTE

DITCH THE PLATED DINNER.

What once sounded like a necessity can now be completely forgone, if you choose. Instead of serving a sitdown dinner, create mini stations filled with appetizers that guests can graze on as they socialize, or set up a collection of food trucks outside for a casual meal. Ditching the traditional dinner doesn’t mean you can’t think upscale. On-site sommeliers host wine tastings while sushi chefs make sashimi right before guests’ eyes. Another emerging trend relates to the presentation of food. While taste is of upmost importance, brides and grooms are shifting focus to prioritize the look of the food, as well. Food displays can be incorporated into the décor, and tableside presentations (think nitrogen ice cream or bananas foster set aflame) add to the overall experience.

THE DRESS. Brides seem to be taking more risks when it comes to the dress for their I Do’s. Instead of classic silhouettes that mimic the pages of Brides magazine, more women are infusing their own style into their looks, on-trend or not. The trend when it comes to wedding dresses seems to be that there really isn’t one. Opt for long lacy sleeves a la Kate Middleton, or bedazzle your gown with pearls and feathers. Dresses walking the runway are embracing 70s throwbacks, black and white combinations, and heavy costume jewelry. In some cases, the wedding dress doesn’t have to be a dress at all as brides who prefer pants are opting to wear the style down the aisle.

CONTINUING THEMES.

The popularity of both rustic and vintage affairs has soared in recent years, and that isn’t expected to change in 2018. However, dramatic events, featuring sparkling lights, fireworks, and over-the-top décor will likely pick up as more brides opt for extravagance. This may include video effects and creative lighting to alter the optics of an indoor ballroom—nothing is off limits.

THE NEW GIFT REGISTRY.

If fine china and quirky kitchen appliances aren’t musts in your life, you no longer need to feel obligated to fill a registry with these traditional wedding gift items. Instead, ask for what you really want—or nothing at all. Stores like Best Buy and Amazon offer wedding registries that allow couples to list electronics and bicycles amongst their must-haves. Honeymoon registries can focus on creating your dream getaway. Or, forgo gifts and choose a favorite charity for guests to donate to instead.

BOUDOIR,

Baby! BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE AND WOW YOUR BABE WITH AN EXTRA SPECIAL WEDDING GIFT.  BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Sexy is not my thing. I’ve always known it, but 15 other women learned one evening I was forced to participate in a “fitness” pole dancing class. The amount of awkward I felt inside

smeared across my face and took over my body. The instructor laughed and said, ‘Don’t be weird about it!” I could not. So, when I caught wind of the boudoir wedding gift trend I slightly cringed. This is some sexy stuff. One, I do not feel that I’m photogenic, and two… you wear what? In front of who? I called a few local photographers that offer the service to get the low down, and the longer they spoke, the more intrigued I became. This is no X-Rated wedding gift. Instead, imagine yourself all dolled up with help from professional stylists, rocking a fierce 1920s pinup inspired suit—or, posed in a black and white photo that elegantly showcases your bare back being tickled by your perfectly styled hair. That doesn’t sound so bad. After diving deep into a boudoir photography blog wormhole, I can now say that I’m all about it, and here to answer the 5 W’s (and then some) in hopes to help you gift a killer wedding present and boost your confidence in the process.

24

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

WHO?

Being photographed is an intimate experience, let alone being photographed in lingerie or partly nude. It seems any creep off the street would take that gig—right?! It’s important to find a professional, quality photographer that you vibe well with. Meet or speak with your prospects on the phone before scheduling anything. Make sure you communicate well and feel comfortable with their personality, as they’ll direct your poses throughout the shoot. Many wedding photographers are beginning to offer this service—while others specialize in it, and boast tons of wardrobe options and props to amp up your shoot! Hit the Internet for reviews and galleries to find the right photographer for you.

WHAT (should I wear)?

We’re all women here, so I don’t need to explain why wardrobe is key. Take time to search for the perfect little somethings that make you feel super sexy, but also comfortable in front of a camera. Consider your style and the look you’re going for. Will you feel like striking a pose in a barely there teddy or will you freeze once your out of the private dressing room and under bright lights? Or, would a more conservative, but still sexy, look inspire you to express your sassy self and truly enjoy the experience?

WHERE?

Typically, boudoir photographers will have a studio available for the shoot. This will serve as a private place to have your hair and makeup done, make wardrobe changes, and pose freely with all the right lighting. Other options can include your home or a stunning hotel room. Talk location right off the bat, to ensure that the photographer you choose can meet your location dreams and needs.

WHEN?

Chances are you’re hitting the gym hard to look your best on your big day. Schedule your shoot a week or two before the wedding to reap the benefits of your hard work and encapsulate it forever! Who doesn’t want to be photographed when they feel their best and busted their booty (literally) for it? The experience itself is rather invigorating, and will also serve as a nice break from sometimes stressful wedding planning.

WHY?

What’s better than a beautifully bound book of sexy photos of you? I know you’re not Kim K, but I still can’t deny the intimacy of this special wedding gift. Your hubby-tobe thinks you’re the most beautiful woman alive, so what better way to wow him minutes before you say ‘I do’.   Another perk is girl power, baby! Boudoir is all about self-love and acceptance, freedom and fun. Pour a glass of wine, get pampered by professional hair and makeup artists, and celebrate how beautiful you are.

SHOULD I BRING A FRIEND FOR MORAL SUPPORT?

If your friend is a bottle of wine, then yes. Also, a human friend in attendance is highly

suggested. Both the wine and your bestie will help you relax. Crack jokes with your girl and ask her for feedback on poses. She most likely knows what you like, and how you like to look—so she’ll be a perfect addition behind the lens. Bring your favorite songs along, too! There’s a reason why every Vogue shoot has music blaring in the background. You’ll be dancing away as you nail perfect poses with no pressure.

Love A

 BY NORA HESTON TARTE

THAT SPANS

Globe

THE

Exotic locales have fast become the norm for newlyweds who want to celebrate their union in seclusion. Beachfront getaways

across the world offer intimate settings and romantic resorts to help couples create an unforgettable experience. The very name itself—honeymoon—draws on the need to cherish the sweet moments of a new marriage, to celebrate a budding union in private, and to kickoff a new life together with an esoteric experience. These top locations across the globe not only take advantage of the need for privacy, they offer couples a chance to seek new adventure together, explore diverse climates, and revel in the culture of lands far away before retreating back to everyday life as husband and wife.

80

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

KOH TAO, THAILAND

Nicknamed Turtle Island due to its abundance of hawksbill and green turtles, this luxury island is part of the Chumphon Archipelago, west of the Gulf of Thailand. Here, couples can take advantage of turquoise waters, abundant sea life, and tourism centered on scuba diving and snorkeling. Outdoor enthusiasts will also love the ample hiking trails, rock climbing, and bouldering opportunities across the island. A must stop for all couples; Sairee is hailed for its white sand beaches. More populated than the nearby village of Chalok Baan Khao (where tourists sometimes escape to avoid large crowds), it’s an excellent place to grab dinner on the water since the bay is home to a row of restaurants and resorts. Sairee has been praised as a spectacular spot to watch the sunset, perhaps from one of the beachfront bars in the area. When you’re ready for adventure, look no farther than the scuba diving schools located on (just about) every street. The Southeast Asian destination is second only to Cairns, Australia for number of annual dive certifications granted, and that’s in large part due to how inexpensive it is to get certified in Koh Tao. The other draw is the clear water, which garners excellent views of Koh Tao’s expansive sea life and other underwater treasures. The Chumphon course is a must for all, and advanced divers should see The Wreck of the Sattakut, a U.S. Navy ship that sunk in 2011. If sinking thousands of feet underwater isn’t your idea of a good time, there are plenty of other water adventures to be had. Take up snorkeling, sail across the seas, head to Sup Tao for paddle boarding, or charter a fishing boat—a nod to the island’s historic roots as a stop-off for fisherman from neighboring towns.

GETTING AROUND:

It’s important to note that travel around Koh Tao isn’t as easy as calling an Uber. The roads are simple and, in many places, breaking down, making motorbikes the most common form of transportation on the island. To get there in the first place, you’ll need to take a ferry from a handful of companies that serve Koh Tao.

WHERE

to STAY:

The Place is the place to stay. The luxury boutique villas have a long list of accolades that include the No. 1 hotel for romance in the world and the No. 1 luxury hotel in the world. The spacious villas boast breathtaking views of the ocean, private sundecks, and a private plunge pool. Every aspect of the hotel is centered on creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience for its guests, with ample opportunity to infuse romance into your stay. SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

81

BORA BORA

A small South Pacific island northwest of Tahiti in French Polynesia, Bora Bora conjures up images of stilted huts perched over the island’s turquoise waters. Surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef, Bora Bora is an international tourist destination hailed for its easy island life and luxury resorts. Here, the colors ignite romance. From the blue-blue waters and lush green peaks to the soft pink sunsets setting over the ocean, Bora Bora has earned its reputation as the best island in the world. With miles of sapphire waters stretched out in front of you, it’s easy to see why ocean-centric activities make up the bulk of Bora Bora’s activities. The calm waters create ideal conditions for kayaking and paddle boarding, while those looking for speed can take a guided tour on a jet ski. All-day experiences including lagoon snorkel cruises and island barbecues

82

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

are an easy way to pass the day. True adrenaline seekers can sign up for shark diving. Lagoon Service Bora Bora offers guests the chance to swim with sharks, eels, rays, and tropical fish while snorkeling through the coral gardens. The experience comes highly rated thanks in large part to talented tour guides who serenade guests with ukulele music and island tunes along on the way. Couples can also commemorate their honeymoon with a photography tour. View the island with a professional photographer who will snap romantic shots while sharing the history and culture of the island with you. On land, 4WD tours and hikes take visitors to new heights. The island features two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, of the island’s extinct volcano. And in the air, helicopter tours proffer romance akin to reality dating shows and panoramic views of paradise. Spend your unplanned hours at the beach, white sand between your toes, cocktails in hand, and enough glowing pink and orange sunsets to last a lifetime.

WHERE

to STAY:

Hotel Bora Bora built the first bungalows over the water and has remained one of the best places to stay when visiting Bora Bora. Since then, however, other hotels have replicated the model that has launched Bora Bora’s tourism industry. The Four Seasons resort is undoubtedly one of the best on the island, with a holistic healing centre that uses natural resources from the island to create signature therapies and a line-up of Polynesian restaurants and private in-room or beachside dining options.

ST. LUCIA

Tucked away in the Eastern Caribbean, the island of St. Lucia is home to volcanic beaches, superior reef-diving, luxury resorts, and fishing villages, surrounded by rainforest and anchored by two mountains, the Pitons, on its west coast. Perhaps one of the most romantic destinations within the island is the 15m-high Toraille waterfall, where water pours over a cliff into a garden below. St. Lucia offers adventure for everyone. Adrenaline junkies can ride high above the rainforest, cascading through the treetops on zip lines, take on the island terrain on horseback trekking up the Gros Pitons mountains, or become a certified scuba diver at one of the island’s schools. When you need to rejuvenate after the adventures of the day, the beaches call to you. Choc Beach, located along the northeastern coast, is a favorite for visitors who praise its privacy as well as its tranquility and peacefulness away from the crowds of Castries, the island’s capital. St. Lucia is set apart from the rest of the Caribbean in large part due to its healing focus. Amongst the island’s natural beauty, a variety of spas take up space in St. Lucia, as well as mineral-rich springs at Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens and purifying mud baths and bathing pools at Sulphur Springs. Book a massage at Ti Kaye, where open-air treatment rooms are built into the side of a cliff or Sugar Beach where gazebos perched on stilts above a running stream offer the ultimate natural treatments and relaxation.

Castries provides a faster pace than the rest of the island with a lively market and duty-free shopping. It’s also a cruise port where many people stream in and out of the city. Colorful murals are a stark contrast to Castries natural surroundings, including Morne Fortune hills and palm-lined Vigie Beach. It’s an ideal place to catch sightseeing tours around the island by land or by sea. It’s also home to Eudovic’s Art Studio, Derek Walcott Square, the Maria Islands Nature Reserve, and the Central Library.

WHERE

to STAY:

Located in Castries, the Rendezvous Resort offers a central location and a luxurious setting. Near all of the “to dos” on your list, this Malabar Beach hotel is praised for its champagne bar and lazy river. Located one-mile from the nearest airport, it’s a little slice of European opulence in the center in the Caribbean. Smaller than the all-inclusive resorts that often reign supreme on the island (and are worthy alternatives), this boutique hotel excels in service and setting.

MYANMAR ASIA

Immerse yourself in Asian culture in Myanmar (formerly Burma), a Southeast Asian nation bordering India, Bangladesh, China, Laos, and Thailand. The cultural melting pot (the area boasts more than 100 ethnic groups) is known for its bustling markets, Yangon (the largest city), and the historic, sixth-century Shwedagon Pagoda housing Buddhist relics. Dense tropical forests, sprawling jungles, and 3,651 miles of uninterrupted coastline create an environmentally diverse area rich in wildlife. Tigers, rhinoceros, water buffalo, leopards, antelopes, boars, and elephants call Myanmar home, and many of these species are trained and used as work animals. Small mammals, over 800 species of birds, and various reptiles also reside within Myanmar. Myanmar’s architecture is reminiscent of ancient Indian culture, with pagodas dating back to the sixth century. The country is rich with religious sites, so much so that visitors may suffer from pagoda fatigue after touring the area. The Shwedagon Pagoda is one of the most famous stupas, located in the city’s former capital, Yangon. The Ananda Temple is another early structure, a Buddhist temple built in 1105 during the Pagan Dynasty. It is one of only four surviving temples in the city of Bagan. To experience everyday life in Yangon, take a ride on the Circular Train. The three-hour trip passes through Myanmar’s countryside, granting tourists glimpses of how locals live in the area, from the developed parts of Yangon to the more rural outskirts of the city.

84

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

Ngapali is one of the top-rated beaches in the world. Take advantage of your surroundings and the rich history that permeates Myanmar by booking an Oriental balloon tour for breathtaking views of the varied landscape. The trip, complete with champagne toasts, is perfect for honeymooners commemorating the beginning of their new life together. Charter a fishing boat through Friends Forever and enjoy snorkeling off the coast.

WHERE

to STAY:

Formerly Rangoon, Yangon is the largest city in Myanmar and home to many of its cultural and historic gems. The Strand honors many of the traditions of the area with high-tea served daily at 4 PM, plus modern comforts including evening cocktails provided inside. The hotel is stately and refurbished to include all of the high-end amenities you’d wish for on your honeymoon, and the hotel’s spa comes out on top when ranked against other Yangon hotels. The hotel also ranked No. 3 in the city for romance.

PALAWAN, PHILIPPINES

The province is made up of the long and narrow Palawan island and an additional nearly 1,800 islands and islets. A whopping 56 percent of the region is forest, with a diverse flora and fauna that more closely resembles Sundaland than the rest of the Philippines, giving it a unique climate and opportunity for many exclusive animal and plant sightings. More than 35 percent of the country’s coral reefs exist here, with a seascape that rivals the landscapes of Palawan. It has consistently ranked amongst the most beautiful islands in the world and captured the top island destination stop in Southeast Asia in 2007 (National Geographic Traveler). The island’s diverse climate makes it an area of interest for both conservation and sustainable development. If you came to revel at the wildlife, Palawan has made scoping out diverse creatures easy for animal-loving travelers. Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary houses exotic African animals, including many endangered species. Nearby Coron Reefs is one of the most popular jump-offs on the island for those looking to get a closer look at sea life (or become a certified diver.) Here, it is not just the animals

that attract underwater exploration, but the myriad of sunken ships that tell the story of Palawan and its many political changes throughout the years. The Tubbataha Reef Marine Park is a highly populated atoll reef where visitors can marvel at a variety of marine species, including an impressive collection of turtles. The extensive lagoons and two coral islands offer variety, encompassing both North and South Reefs, while the North Islet is a popular nesting site for birds. With 23 municipalities in 5,656 square miles, each nook and cranny of the picturesque Palawan hides more treasures to be uncovered. Puerto Princesa offers Underground River caves ripe for exploration, Honda Bay is an ideal place to follow up snorkeling with fresh seafood, and the Calamian Islands offer safari packages with a chance to see zebras and giraffes. Perhaps the best stop for sightseeing, however, is the not-so-secret Secret Lagoon, an island hideaway only accessible through a small cave.

to

HOW GET THERE:

Unlike Koh Tao, Palawan has many airstrips that make travel more convenient. This includes both smaller community airports and an international airport—Puerto Princesa.

WHERE

to STAY:

Eco-luxury island hideaway El Nido Resorts Pangulasian Island in Bacuit Bay is one of the top-rated accommodations in Palawan. Voted the No. 1 hotel in El Nido for luxury, it’s the perfect backdrop for your postnuptials getaway. The beachfront property backed by a tropical forest brings the beauty of Palawan’s diverse landscape to you, and it does not skimp on

amenities, including an on-site pool, bar, spa, restaurant, and fitness center. A marine sanctuary nearby is convenient for those who want to get out and explore, while the plush accommodations of the hotel itself proffer a comfortable place to sit and watch both the sunrise and sunset over white sand beaches just steps from your room.

Wedding

couples are moving toward lesstraditional first dances. Choreographed numbers and even downright impressive pop-andlock routines have made their way into first dances, making this tradition open to interpretation and even more demanding of professional training. Not just for the bride and groom, many dance lesson packages can include sessions with the father of the bride and the mother of the groom. After all, a great first dance can be soured when followed by a clunky and awkward dance with mom and dad. For couples with large families it might be a good idea to look into studios that offer group rates so that parents, stepparents and even crazy uncle Jerry—who likes to be involved in everything—can join in on the experience. Before making your final decision, compare rates and package offerings and be sure to discuss the level of expertise you require from your lessons to ensure you hone the right skills for your dance—whatever style it may be. The right help can have any happy couple nail this iconic wedding moment.

MAY I

Choreograph THIS DANCE?

 BY JENNIFER MOULAISON Chances are, your wedding reception will involve plenty of dancing—and we’re not talking about the ‘moves’ you got away with at prom. Whether fine-tuning existing skills, or helping a bride and groom develop their groove completely from scratch, the help of a professional is a wise investment to ensure the first dance goes smoothly and leaves a lasting impression on your guests. Traditional standards demand grace and

timelessness for the first dance. Think Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, which, for most of us, means enlisting the help of an expert to learn the proper maneuvers and get every detail right—from choosing the perfect song to nailing that dramatic dip at the end. It might take a few weeks but it’s a great investment of both time and money when the big day arrives and all eyes are on you. The event of the first dance can bring with it pressure to wow friends and family with a more unique spectacle, which is why more and more

Ask the Experts

ASK the EXPERTS Lisa Hassett, owner of Lodi’s Frosted Flour Cakery & Supplies, has 7 years of experience in the bakery business—turning out intricate, Pinterest-worthy creations. The bakery specializes in wedding cakes, offering artful custom services to construct something unique. A complimentary consultation allows you to taste over 20 different filling and cake flavors, and brain storm with Lisa. Your inspirational photos and color palates are teamed with display cake options to bring your dream to life!

WHAT ARE TOP FACTORS TO CONSIDER?

Jeff Fields has been in the jewelry business since birth. As the third-generation owner of Peck’s

Jewelers, a premiere jewelry store in Stone Creek Village, and a Graduate Gemologist and Certified Gemologist Appraiser—Jeff knows his stuff. And as we near ‘proposal season’ and the crazy-busy holidays, a few life hacks and tips from an expert won’t hurt.

HOW CAN I SURPRISE MY SOON-TO-BE (hopefully) FIANCÉ, BUT ALSO INVOLVE HER IN THE RING CREATION PROCESS?

Pick out the shape and size for your center diamond, and have the diamond alone mounted in a solitaire. Present this ring at the proposal, and then come in together and design additional custom elements.

HOW CAN I BE SURE I’M BUYING A QUALITY DIAMOND?

As a Certified Gemologist Appraiser, I am trained specifically in diamonds. The number one thing—our biggest philosophy—is showing you the differences in terms of quality, and why a larger diamond may be cheaper than a smaller one, and vice versa. Subtle differences in quality make a big difference in price.

Start with size, flavor, and style. Because wedding cakes are usually priced per serving, get your guest list secured and have a head count for your baker. The cake's taste and quality should be top concern. It may look good, but not taste so great, and that’s bad news! Next, think of your colors and theme as you search for inspiration. And always have a few alternate choices in mind!

I WANT SOMETHING TOTALLY UNIQUE, IS THAT POSSIBLE?

WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR A BRIDE ON A BUDGET?

If you’d like a white gold or silver look, platinum is the number one option because it’s the rarest metal, and is white. It requires some regular maintenance to keep its luster, but won’t fade to yellow over time, like white gold.

We work to create alternatives as close to the dream design as possible, without going over budget. There are a few ways this is accomplished, whether it’s a smaller, extravagant main cake with additional sheet cakes, or opting for buttercream instead of fondant.

2017-2018 TRENDS?

The vintage look is still going strong! We have been creating a bunch of cakes with handmade vintage flowers and lace. I’ve also seen swirled, geometric patterns, stucco finish, and geode designs picking up for the coming season.

TIMELINE TIPS?

You can secure your delivery date with Frosted Flour—with a small deposit—before choosing a design or meeting for a consultation. This secures your wedding day right off the bat. From there, I suggest brides begin tasting and sampling 6-9 months out. 88

Yes, we can manufacture anything you’d like—it can come from a photo, include elements from heirloom pieces, or be designed from the ground up.

PLATINUM VS. WHITE GOLD/SILVER?

TIPS FOR BEAUS ON A BUDGET?

You’ve really got to decide if you’d like a smaller, higher quality piece—or a larger diamond of less quality.

CAK ES

CAKE WALK  BY NORA HESTON TARTE Think of the wedding cake as the centerpiece of the reception. It’s part decoration, part cuisine. Not only should the cake compliment your décor—the colors, theme, etc.—it should also compliment the other foods served. Every aspect of weddings has been elevated thanks to Pinterest, reality television, and an overall growth in the high-end wedding market. And while other desserts are popping up at weddings, too, none are more celebrated than the infamous wedding cake. Take your dessert high in the sky with a multi-tiered creation, or get creative with frosting and flavor for a next-level confectionary. The best recipe for a memorable wedding cake is a perfect balance of design and taste. 92

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

TASTE IS

Everything… Meet with your baker for a tasting and design consultation. Whether this is one appointment, or multiple, is up to you and the cake creator. Taste as many flavor combinations as you can stomach to expertly combine fillings, frostings, and flavors. And when you need to, ask the advice of a professional.

TAKE YOUR

Time

Crafting the perfect wedding cake for your affair takes time. You wouldn’t rush the baking process and there’s no need to rush the design process either, as long as you’re planning ahead. Wedding rule of thumb says cakes should be ordered two months before nuptials, making it one of the last large elements planned.

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

One of the benefits of the cake deadline coming last is that your dinner menu has likely been cemented. Bring a copy of the menu to share with your baker so you can pick flavors that will enhance the taste of dinner and drinks. Pinterest is a good starting place when it comes to choosing a cake design. Peruse the popular wedding website and pin designs you love to your wedding board. Share these shots with your cake designer to give an idea of the look you’re after. Instead of copying the photo exactly, designers can create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece inspired by your pinned photos. Expert bakers go beyond classic cakes with floral toppers. Frosting can look mosaic or ombre, be bright and colorful, muted, or, beautifully bare (naked cake trends are on the rise and perfect for those who dislike an overload of sweet frosting), or trade those flowers for fresh fruit instead. The choice is yours! While there are many avenues to stroll down on this cakewalk, the design should compliment the overall feel of your wedding. Don’t feel limited by wedding cake norms either—tradition has gone out the window as brides look for the next big wedding cake trend! Help your cake designer out by bringing photos of the other design elements of your wedding—think décor, reception space, even your dress! It’ll help create a cohesive look for the reception where the cake will be on display.

TAKE

Shape

While the colors and toppers are important pieces of your cake design, the shape is another matter that must be addressed. Round tiers are the classic option, but brides today are thinking

outside of the box—er, circle. Go square, hexagonal, heartshaped or spherical (a growing trend for grooms cakes). Create a Leaning Tower of Pisa out of sugar, flour, and eggs, or take the Mad Hatter’s approach to a mismatched cake.

Step

IT UP

Want your cake to tower on its tabletop? Add layers! Looking for a cake that appears to be covered in pearls? That’s easy! Are sugar flowers in your future? A cinch! Don’t feel limited in your quest for the perfect cake. Welcome the unusual and imprint your initials, embrace texture, and really infuse your style into dessert. Guests will have a full evening to marvel at the design work before diving in to taste.
