SANDRINE BY ELIZABETH FILLMORE

Inspired by Sarah Burton’s bespoke stunner donned by Kate Middleton for her royal debut, the illusion neckline marked a dramatic return last year. This trend enjoyed an encore on the spring 2012 runways, where every major design house from Marchesa to Monique Lhuillier showcased exquisite gowns featuring the romantic detail—think a skin-revealing bodice with a delicate bust-to-collar overlay embellished with lace, embroidery, beading, pearls, crystals and other pretty trimmings. Both modern and classic, this tailored ornament transcends time and theme, making it the ideal complement for every silhouette, whether it is a demure A-line, body-hugging mermaid, or feminine sheath. While Kate Middleton harkened timeless Grace Kelly, her British counterpart, the very modern Kate Moss, donned an ethereal gossamer v-neck gown by John Galliano to channel Edwardian-era style while still being fashion forward. Covering San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties

PANES OF LACE BY BHLDN

Brides looking to make a similar statement this spring should nod to Monique Lhuillier’s one-shouldered “Lina,” a sartorial expression featuring a corseted bodice of Chantilly lace, or Elizabeth Fillmore’s “Sandrine” gown embroidered with French lace. We’re also in love with just about every jaw-dropper that sashayed down the Reem Acra runway, which unveiled a constellation of glamorously garnished crystal necklines. Everyday brides with everyday budgets, on the other hand, will say an enthusiastic ‘I do’ to the shorter hemline of Ivy & Aster’s sweet “Helena” dress, BHLDN’s “Panes of Lace” gown, and the subtle sexy tulle of the floor-grazing “Elysium.” Illusion necklines are also staples of this season’s bridesmaid dresses and flirty party frocks. Take the lovely “Saturnalia” dress in ivory, also from BHLDN. The rest, as they say, is fashion history. —JenniferThornton

FLOWERS The

Nothing says spring more beautifully or romantically than freshly picked flowers—a secret that boho brides have known for years. Once a staple of backyard ‘I dos,’ wildflowers have found new life at large-scale nuptials. And though still a favored DIY option, florists now fashion these whimsical buds into anything but garden-variety arrangements. Earthy custom florals are now an increasingly popular choice for bridal bouquets, corsages, and boutonnieres that also feature personal touches like heirloom jewels; sweet details such as pearls, spangled crystals and vintage French ribbons; and unexpected additions like spring berries and aromatic herbs. Clustered together, these

one-of-a-kind arrangements make a simple, elegant, and unique statement. Cultivate your own blooms for your big day—dandelion, clover, fennel, buttercup, and chamomile are all lovely—order them from a nursery, or gather greens from a spot that holds significance for you. Either way, the feel will be ethereal and literary—wild and casual yet delicate and dream-like. In photos, wildflowers appear sweetly gauzy and never upstage the bride who holds them, whether they are dramatically colorful or pale and feathered. Sprinkle orphaned petals on tabletops and stash seeds inside sachets for your ‘maids. Now that’s what we call poetic abundance.—Jennifer Thornton

From barns-as-venues to DIY centerpieces and garden-toglass cocktails, the shabby-chic wedding is in. Marking its more glamorous return are earthy adornments from highend crafters such as hand-carved wooden planks, intricately painted and monikered with names, dates, and whimsical reinventions of timeless sayings. Complement these romantic directionals with numbered wooden table-toppers and feathered-flowered guestbook pens. Turn to burlap for tablecloths, runners and chair tie-backs; drape swaths of billowing white linen from the rafters, and light a thousand votives that, together, will cast a soft glow over today’s trendy farmhouse affairs. Mason jars take center stage as both des-

sert containers and candleholders, and gingham accents every detail, from edible bridal bouquets to altar-adorning wreaths made from dried flowers. Paper garland and hanging lanterns lend a fashionably vintage flair to a rustic reception area where chalkboards serve as menu boards, weathered picnic benches and hay bales act as unexpected seating, and the ‘sweets’ table proffers retro sips in throwback bottles. Use strings of lights to cascade over beams or trees to create ambience while sprigs of lavender in a menagerie of vintage glass bottles or thyme in terra cotta pots provide pops of earthly delights.—Jennifer Thornton

Monogrammed chocolates—been there, ate that. Once upon a time, paper was used solely for invites, gift tags, place card holders and wrapping, but it’s found a happily ever after on our radar. Follow the personalized paper trail to boldly hued-hand fans (how Southern of you!) and sun-shielding parasols for summer nuptials. The path continues further east where origami and paper cranes, a popular symbol of longevity in Japan, originated. Closer to home, printed napkins, matchboxes and coasters made from quality stock look like a million bucks but cost considerably less and custom playing cards are a safe bet as a crowd pleaser. For another ace in the hole, try paper fortune tellers. Better known as “cootie catchers” and “whirlybirds” in retro cir-

cles, these toys-turned-keepsakes have gotten a makeover in recent years, with some options being downright elegant, boasting dynamic graphics and artsy fonts. And then there’s the more literal interpretation of fortune telling—fortune cookies and carriers. Also noteworthy are personalized notepads and journals, while good old-fashioned books are popping up at smaller affairs—Pablo Neruda’s Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair is sure to get everyone in the mood, as will a classic romance with a monogrammed bookmark or a personal inscription from the happy couple. And, if all that fails to capture your imagination, your guests will absolutely flip for a fun, flirty flipbook of your engagement photos.—Jennifer Thornton

RANCHO PESCADERO Mexico Unveils a Sexy New Stay South of the Border BY JENNIFER THORNTON

Named one of the “World’s Most Romantic Hotels” by the savvy set over at Travel + Leisure, Rancho Pescadero is a haven for lovers looking to escape it all. Situated one hour north of buzzing Cabo San Lucas, but worlds-away from its high-traffic all-inclusive hotels, this welcoming oasis occupies a coveted perch on the Pacific Coast of Baja California Sur. Location alone is reason enough to pack your bags—but there are many others. Since opening two years ago, Rancho Pescadero has elevated Mexican beachfront living considerably by bucking just about every trend now associated with the “boutique beach

hotel.” First up, accommodations— here, suites are in short supply (that’s total seclusion for you and yours). Each of the property’s 27 authentically-adorned sanctuaries features a textured tapestry that weaves together earthy elements like Oaxacan pottery and hand-woven rugs with modern appointments and renewing extras such as indigenously made bath products. Inside these spacious suites, things get romantic fast— picture a sumptuously draped bed, sunken tub and mosaic shower that will have you frantically searching for the “do not disturb” sign. Outside, a fringe of swaying palms, painterly sand dunes, and a seemingly endless horizon enhances a red-clay exterior.

Factor in Rancho Pescadero’s other features—an outdoor kitchen set just off the resort’s organic garden (the top toque here was the former sous chef at the Jean Georges restaurant at the Palmilla, which counts Jen Aniston as a regular); two pools and hot tubs; a bar area; and a yoga pavilion overlooking the ocean—and the spectacle only improves. Stealing this entire show is abundant nature, anchored by a stunning two-mile stretch of a secluded white-sand beach for romantic strolls at sunset, when the skies open and the stars align. This backdrop not only encourages unwinding, it peddles it. There is no shortage of places to sloth about. Day beds, lounges, and hammocks take the whole “maxing and relaxing” idea to an entirely new level of bliss. Nirvana continues with complimentary beach yoga (perfect for working out those kinks from keeping pace with your ‘maids on the dance floor) and at the Mayan-inspired Tres Herma-

Honeymoon

Of course, it’s not all about kicking back—although, no fooling, that’s a huge part of the Rancho Pescadero experience. Honeymooners who summon the urge

to leave their suite find that there are plenty of activities to ignite their adventurous side, including surfing, boogie boarding, mountain biking, and horseback riding. And then there’s the whole matter of swimming with whale sharks—one of the few places in the world where this is possible. A quick hop to the nearby Sea of Cortez introduces even more local aquaculture via scuba diving, snorkeling and deep sea fishing. Also close by is the

sleepy town of Todo Santos, of “Hotel California” fame. Stop by for fresh-baked chips and zesty salsa, or to pick up artisan souvenirs from local gift shops. Indulgences continue with fresh, healthy, and organic cuisine. The majority of Rancho Pescadero’s farm and oceanto-table food is sourced within a twenty mile radius, a fairly rare practice in Baja until recently. The bar menu also benefits from the resort’s commitment to using locally grown products. If it’s local libations you crave, the resort ages its 52

own 100-percent Blue Agave tequila and serves up an impressive selection of artisanal sips (cheers to the Cilantro Margarita!) and an almost exclusively Mexican wine list. What’s more—or most, depending on how you look at it—after breaking the bank for your wedding you can have an ultra-luxurious honeymoon on the cheap. Suites, which include a delivery of fruit and coffee each morning, start at just $185 per night.

Mini-Moon

MEADOWOOD BY JENNIFER THORNTON

Nestled in the heart of wine country, on the outskirts of St. Helena, a premier luxury resort proffers a woodsy retreat for mini-mooners.

WINE & DINE: Meadowood offers two delicious dining options. A thoughtfully curated menu of simple dishes

SEE: Take the long and winding road into the town of nearby St. Helena and spend the afternoon exploring charming Main Street. Here, you’ll find a trove of take-away trinkets. From trendy clothing boutiques and tucked-away restaurants (hello Cindy’s Back Street Kitchen!) to pricey papery outlets and artisan shops for chocolate and olive

oil, there is something for everyone. Of course, “something” usually comes with a hefty price tag, but the goods are worth it. Later, follow Main Street out of town to The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone to visit Spice Islands Marketplace – a dream for home chefs. SPA: After sampling, sipping, and strolling, a massage will revive—and at Meadowood, you’ll get the couple’s rubdown you deserve. The resort’s Health Spa offers a beautifully appointed locker room with purifying steam rooms, weight and cardio equipment, and a pool. Enjoy a rejuvenating plunge after a round of golf or croquet, a tennis tutorial, or a hike to the resort’s hilltop meditation circle.

STAY: Meticulously tended vineyards and purple bursts of grapes set against dusty pink skies dot the rolling hills of this wine country’s storied countryside. But slumbering just above the treeline is a forested haven favored by the likes of former guests Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Meadowood, a private estate surrounded by 250 scenic acres of natural beauty (think towering pines, expansive emerald lawns and clipped fairways), boasts just 85 cozy but exquisitely appointed cottages, suites, and lodges with porcelain tubs in every room for romantic, candlelit and rose-petaled soaks. And the beds—forget about it. Let’s just say when the lights aren’t on low, they’ll be completely out.

featuring local and organic ingredients harvested in Meadowood’s garden at the Napa Valley Reserve is the signature of Michelin-starred The Restaurant at Meadowood. Here, expect bold, complex flavors and an unpretentious vibe. Just down the hill, overlooking the golf course, is The Grill, a casual dining outpost that plates scrumptious but scaled-back cuisine—and pours really zippy sips (who knew an “Arnold Palmer” could be so refreshing?). Naturally, everything pairs well with Meadowood’s extensive wine line. The resort even supports a wine education program stewarded by a master sommelier. Complementary tastings are held nightly and tours of area wineries can also be arranged. If out and about, V. Sattui Winery makes a crisp Riesling and Merryvale boasts a world-famous cask room.

Rowena & Joseph Coronel October 8, 2011, Church of the Presentation, Stockton When Rowena and Joseph threw their wedding bash, it was an all out party. With two stretch navigators rented and an open bar, the goal of the evening was to kick back and have fun with family and friends. The couple gave themselves roughly nine months to plan the wedding and worked together every step of the way, which Rowena says made all the difference. “I was so blessed to have a husband who, any time I told him we needed to do this or that, was more than willing to say okay, let’s get it done.” On the day of the wedding, Rowena decided to wear a blindfold during the final stages of her bridal makeover so that her ‘big reveal’ would be more exciting. When she finally came out of her bridal suite, her family was awestruck, but none more than Joseph. “When he saw me walking down the aisle he had this big smile on his face. I asked him what he was thinking after and he said, you are the most gorgeous person in the world. I just smiled. It was the best day ever.” The wedding was almost as beautiful as the blushing bride, with a modern color scheme of chocolate and coral, and bright flowers of pink, white, and green. The couple was surprised by Rowena’s cousins who put together an impromptu hip-hop dance performance, and the couple themselves wowed guests with their own ballroom dancing skills.—K.B.

Michelle & Shawn Vargas June 4, 2011, The Reserve at Spanos Park, Stockton Michelle and Shawn had only been dating for seven months when they decided to get hitched. “We were out shopping and decided to look at rings,” says Michelle. Looking turned into buying, and the couple ended up returning from the mall that day as future husband and wife. Despite the short courtship, the couple took their time planning their wedding over the course of almost a year with their date set for a sunny day in June. But when the big day finally arrived, storm clouds rolled through. “The weather turned out having a 95 percent chance of rain. It rained up until an hour before the ceremony,” says Michelle. Though the event was windy, the showers subsided just in time to create a beautiful rainbow in the sky for stunning wedding photos. Michelle said that the most stressful aspect of planning her wedding was finding all the details she wanted, which led her on a scavenger hunt for the perfect vendors, but she also felt the planning brought her and Shawn together, as they enjoyed sharing their ideas and even making their own votive candle centerpieces together. The elegant color scheme was navy blue and black, and Michelle had a bouquet of white roses, with blue daises to represent her cousin who had passed away. Looking back on the day, Michelle says everything came out exactly as she envisioned it and the couple couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day.—K.B.

Cassaundra & Joshua Burastero June 19, 2011, Wine & Roses, Lodi Cassaundra and Josh waited three years to become engaged, but once Josh popped the question, wedding plans commenced with vigor. Since Josh proposed in February, they only had four months to plan their perfect day, as Cassaundra dreamed of a June wedding. “I didn’t want a big wedding and I didn’t want to plan for a long time. I wanted to make my decisions and just go with it,” says Cassaundra. With lots of help from her hands-on husband-to-be, and from Wine & Roses (Cassaundra is the sales coordinator there), the planning was easy and quick. To save time and money, the couple made their own invitations, menus, and centerpieces. “I didn’t want everything to be the same,” says Cassaundra. “Even the menus were made of different paper, with different ones on each table. I wanted something fun and unique.” To reflect Cassaundra’s Scottish roots, her four year old nephew acted as a page boy during the ceremony, carrying a lucky horseshoe down the aisle which was later hung in the couple’s house for good luck. They also represented Josh’s Italian roots by having oil and vinegar miniatures as wedding favors. Since Josh proposed at Disneyland, one of the couple’s favorite places to go, Cassaundra walked down the aisle to a piano ballad of “When You Wish Upon a Star,” in a lace, vintage style gown. Cassaundra says her advice to brides planning their wedding is to make a decision and stick with it. “Your first instinct is always the best and if you change your mind a thousand times you’re going to drive yourself crazy… Save yourself the stress. You want to enjoy the day, not worry if people notice the monogrammed butter.”—K.B. 68

Melissa & Steve Saghbazarian September 17, 2011, The Stevenson Gardens, French Camp Whenever a couple says ‘I do’, they cross their fingers and hope that no matter what obstacles come their way, their love will stand the test of time. But for Melissa and Steve, they already knew they were going to be just fine. The couple began dating in 2001 and was engaged in 2006. However, since they were still young, they decided to call things off to spend more time figuring out who they were. When they rekindled their relationship, they were already earning their degrees at separate universities, so the couple endured a long distance relationship for two years. “I’m proud that we were able to have that long distance relationship,” says Melissa. “We did have our rough times but in the end, we still liked each other.” Eventually the couple got a place together, and more in love than ever, had their first child. They finally walked down the aisle last September, and Melissa even wore the original dress she had purchased in 2006, (and it still fit perfectly, post-baby!) Melissa says her favorite moment of the day was when her family members gave speeches, especially her sister, who had witnessed the ups and downs of her and Steve’s ten year long relationship, and compared them to the duct tape that once held Steve’s car together, saying that after all they had been through it was certain that they would always stick together. Another great detail of the wedding was Melissa’s bouquet, which was made of old brooches that she had collected over time. Melissa also made personalized brooch bouquets for her bridesmaids. Melissa is thankful she and Steve waited to get married, and let’s brides know that if they ever want to test their love, long distance relationships are a great way to do it.

Charla & Emanuel Jimenez September 24, 2011, Viaggio Estate & Winery, Acampo Charla first caught Emanuel’s eye outside of his office. She worked nearby, and would often pass him on the street. “Every time he saw me and tried to talk to me, I was always on my cell phone so he never could,” says Charla. One day, the two bumped into each other in the hall of their apartment complex. Realizing they were neighbors, Emanuel finally got his chance to introduce himself and the two fell in love. When planning their wedding, Charla and Emanuel wanted each guest to feel special. A calligrapher was hired to create unique name cards for each table setting, and to beautifully personalize each invitation. Charla made her grand entrance by driving herself to the ceremony in a white vintage car. But perhaps the most memorable part of the day for guests was the food. “Favors sometimes go to the wayside,” says Charla. “You don’t know what people do with them. So we gave guests Chinese to-go boxes in our wedding colors, and each person got a special thank you and could take their box to the dessert bar.” Guests filled up on lemon bars, chocolate-dipped peanut butter cookies, caramel filled brownie bites, and other decadent goodies, each one cleverly named after a member of the wedding party. Charla and Emanuel created a day that was ultimately theirs, full of personality and one-of-kind details. To other couples planning their big day, Charla offers this piece of advice: “Sit back and realize that this is you and your husband’s day. Even though there are traditional things you’re ‘supposed’ to do, in the end it’s your day and you make it what you will. That’s all that matters.”—K.B. 72

Cecelie Moses-Hymes & John Hymes June 25, 2011, St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Tracy Spirituality is an important part of the lives of Cecelie and John, and it’s also what brought them together. They met in the spring of 2007 on a Catholic dating website, and talked extensively online before meeting in person a few weeks later. Cecelie recalls thinking that if John was the person he seemed to be online, he could be ‘the one’. And she was right. One weekend in February, the couple took a romantic trip to Yosemite. While walking along a snow-covered valley, they came across a snowman that had melted and fallen apart. “We started putting it back together, and he started talking all sappy and telling me how he felt about me. I was confused at first. We were both kneeling down packing the snow together, and he reached in his pocket and pulled out a jewelry box,” she says. Cecelie wanted their wedding be very personal, so she made the invitations and put together her hydrangea wedding bouquet. She also made her wedding cake with the help of her mother, and the reception was catered by John’s aunt and uncle. The couple even designed wedding bands for each other with the help of a San Francisco jeweler. After the ceremony, the couple and Cecelie’s son Andrew stopped by the home of John’s grandmother. At the age of 100, she couldn’t make it to the ceremony, so they brought part of the wedding to her. Cecelie says brides shouldn’t feel like they have to spend a lot of money to create something special. “When John and I were stressed, we would just try and take a moment to remember why we were doing this. It wasn’t because we wanted a fairytale wedding, but because we wanted our friends and family with us for the most important day of our lives.”—K.D. 74

John & Heather Balthazar September 10, 2011, Ironstone, Vineyards & Winery, Murphys What do Hawaii, football, and an antique fire truck have in common? These were just a few of the amazing details that became part of John and Heather Balthazar’s wedding last September. It all began with a memorable proposal in John’s birth place of Hawaii. From then on, the couple went to every wedding appointment together as they planned their perfect day. Of all the special memories Heather has of her wedding, she most recalls entering the ballroom at Ironstone Vineyards for the first time and seeing all of her family and friends stand up and cheer for her and John. “We walked straight to John’s parents and they presented us each with a maile lei, which is a Hawaiian symbol for blessing the union of marriage… That is something I won’t forget,” says Heather. Since John is a fireman in Stockton, the couple got to pose in front of a beautiful antique fire truck for some fabulous wedding photos, and Heather made sure to book the DJ for two and a half hours so she could cut a rug. “I love to dance,” she says. “That was the second best thing about the wedding. I danced the night away!” They also had a cake topper that showed their mutual love of football, as the little bride piggybacked the touchdown running groom. There was only one gaff that day, when thunder clouds rolled in during the ceremony. Heather, who happens to be afraid of thunder and lightning, stuck it out. “I rode out in a carriage with my dad and the winds were blowing tents across the grass. Then we were saying our vows and the thunder just rolled.” Luckily the storm passed with only a sprinkling and the party went on without a hitch.—K.B. 76

Wedding

Etiquette Q: Can we skip the rehearsal dinner to save money? A: Recently, more couples who are paying for their own wedding have been opting out of the rehearsal dinner to save money. That’s totally fine, but before you decide to nix it completely, consider revamping it into something more simple, fun, and affordable, like a BBQ at someone’s house, or dinner at your favorite pizza parlor. The purpose of the rehearsal dinner is not to put on airs; it’s for the wedding party to get to know each other and for you to have one last meal with your family before you’re married. It’s totally fine (if not better) to keep it small and casual. Think of it that way and you may be able to have your cake and eat it too. Q: I had something in mind for my bridal shower; can I tell my maid-of-honor what I want to do? A: If your maid-of-honor asks for your suggestions, then by all means, share your ideas. If not, it’s probably best to let her run the show. You might drop a subtle hint or two, but remember: she’s putting in the time and effort to create an event in your honor. The only role you should be playing is that of the gracious guest of honor. Be appreciative and have fun. Q: My parents are divorced and not on the best of terms. Do I have to seat them together at the ceremony and reception? A: Hopefully your parents can at least put on their game face for the ceremony. Even if they don’t get along, it’s a nice gesture for them to come together one more time to give you their collective blessing. After all, they did bring you into this world together. But if it’s that bad, don’t force it. Why add unneccessary stress to what should be your magical day? In that case, the mother-of-the-bride (or groom) typically sits in the front pew and the father in the second. For the reception, you do not have to sit them at the same table. Seating them with their close friends and family members will make them more comfortable so they can better enjoy the special day.

WEDDING ETIQUETTE by Katy Berry

Q&A

Once the ring goes on the finger, it seems like everybody suddenly has an opinion on how to plan your perfect wedding. It can be exhausting, and with so many details to keep track of, it’s easy to forget the dos and don’ts of wedding etiquette. We’ve got the answers to your most pressing questions to help you avoid wedding day drama.

Q: I’m having a destination wedding—do I have to pay for the guests’ hotel accommodations? A: No. The couple is financially responsible for any mandatory wedding events like the ceremony and reception. Guests are responsible for their own travel, lodging, and personal entertainment costs. However it is a nice gesture to give attendees a small gift for coming so far to celebrate your big day, and to send a thank you note after the wedding. 78

San Joaquin Weddings

I

Covering San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties

Q: Is it rude to have a kids-free wedding? A: This question tends to press a lot of buttons. In one respect, couples don’t want to pay for the extra headcount, or they want to have a more intimate, elegant affair, (no chicken fingers allowed). On the other hand, you could seriously hurt a family member’s feelings by excluding their kids, not to mention the kid’s feelings. And for those who might have a difficult time finding child care, it’s a total bummer having to be left out. It boils down to two schools of thought: 1. A wedding is all about the couple and the whole day should be to their liking, even if that means an adult-only occasion. 2. Weddings are about families, so everyone should be included. Which side are you on? Ultimately it’s your day, your money, your choice. Hopefully others will respect whatever you decide. But if you do go with a kids-free wedding, expect to ruffle some feathers. Q: Whose parents go on the invitation? A: Whoever hosts the wedding is included on the invitation. The host is the person (or couple) who pays for the wedding and takes responsibility for the comfort of the guests. Traditionally, the bride’s parents are responsible for the ceremony and reception costs, so they are listed on the wedding invitation. The groom’s parents typically pay for the reception dinner, and can send out invitations indicating themselves as the hosts. This sometimes helps settle any negative feelings a groom’s parents may have about not being on the actual wedding invitation. If both sets of parents help pay for the wedding, then they are both included on the invitation. If the couple is paying, then the parents do not have to be on the invitation.

Trendy Bites for Modern Brides BY JENNIFER THORNTON

From mobile eats to gourmet mini foods, more couples are shucking the formal sit-down dinner for today’s trend-setting culinary dos. Here are five new flavors to sample for your reception.

1. Bite-sized mini Foods. Keep costs in check by jumping on board the small-plate ship. “Serve smaller versions of larger entrees to host more of a heavy cocktail hour instead of a sit-down dinner,” advises event planner Cara Crowley. Small enough for budget-friendly affairs, but filling enough to keep everyone well fueled for dancing, mini foods are all the rage with today’s couples who lean toward the unique, and the uniquely personal—i.e. diminutive plates with artistic flair. But just because you sacrifice size doesn’t mean that you have to skimp on selection. Mini foods are just scaled down versions of the dishes you love, so ask your caterer to cook up your culinary vision.

2. Casual cuisine with a gourmet twist. Couples whose style leans more toward the backyard than the ballroom love the trendy farm-to-table concept. Not only is the expense minimal, this idea focuses on sustainability. “Couples who want a chic but green wedding have really taken to this idea,” says Crowley. The trick is to source local products and quality ingredients from au courant locales to raise the bar—and the flavor quotient—of simply elegant crowd pleasers like hot dogs, gourmet burgers, fries and sides, all with a sophisticated zing. And, if the menu is more familiar, factoring in presentation embellishments like mason jars will keep it visually interesting. 3. Carnival Fare. Corn dogs, caramel corn, cotton candy, funnel cakes, snow cones and other staples of the county fair for the epicurean are popping up at even the most chic reception venues. Pair these casual, unexpected provisions with midway décor—think vintage bunting, strings of white lights, and velvet tabletops—and big top sips like moonshine lemonade infused with vodka. Serve selections from separate stations or booths, or better yet, hire skilled circus performers to pass them out from unicycles or stilts. Keep it sophisticated with artisan verities of down-home foods like gourmet dipping sauces and condiments. 4. Homemade Desserts. No longer is wedding cake dessert du jour. Although still the most popular meal-ending option, many of today’s adventurous couples are sweet on oldfashioned treats for their affairs and equally retro ways to display them. “I recently saw a wedding were the bride and groom asked each of their guest to bring a cake or homemade treat,” Crowley says. “The wedding planner styled everything and surprised the bride and groom with the desserts.” A selection of seasonally fresh pies is a plentiful option, while throwback sweets like mini Bundt cakes, whoopie pies, and macaroons have all made

80

San Joaquin Weddings

I

a welcome return to the reception. Also popular are elegant DIY wedding cakes featuring sentimental flavors and heirloom toppers. This is a great way to incorporate grandparents and their talents. Make space at the dessert table for equally personal wedding favors—recipe boxes with instructions of how to make each of the featured sweets inside. 5. Food Trucks. “This is a huge wedding trend,” Crowley enthusiastically notes. “But again, the most popular mobile catering options have a local, farm-to-table approach.” Food trucks are perfect for couples bent on keeping the vibe of their reception casual and interactive. Those more retro in style, (think tricked-out airstream trailer) can even become part of the décor. Your guests will love the personal touch. Cara Crowley is an event and lifestyle planner. ElegantCakes Cake Considerations An ideal wedding cake should hit the sweet spot. To find the object of your confection, keep the following factors in mind.

SOMETHING SWEET BAKERY

SOMETHING SWEET BAKERY

• EYE BEFORE YOU BUY: Don’t be in a sugar rush to make a decision. Ask questions, sample the goods, and be open to other ideas.

• DO YOUR HOMEWORK: Collect wedding cake photos and other things that inspire you to share with your wedding cake confectioner.

THE FROSTED FLOUR

• BAKERY: Before settling on a particular cake maker, shop around. Find a baker who is open to your vision, and has the skills and experience to execute it.

SOMETHING SWEET BAKERY

THE FROSTED FLOUR

• CONSIDER THE LOGISTICS: It’s okay to be sweet on style as long as you’ve thought about the nuts and bolts of cake-making. Arrange a complimentary tasting, discuss plate/pillar rental fees and delivery costs, and be aware of payment and cancellation policies.

SOMETHING SWEET BAKERY

• MAKE IT YOURS: A cake should complement your individual aisle style and your wedding’s theme, color, and attire. It should also reflect the couple it celebrates, so use monograms, bridal gown accents (think lace and ribbon), or another unique touch to personalize it.

SWEET PEAS FLORAL DESIGN

EMBELLISH FLORAL DESIGN

• IDENTIFY YOUR NEEDS: Simple backyard weddings may call for a do-it-yourself bouquet of wildflowers and a discreet boutonniere, while formal occasions of size usually require a long list of intricate florals for everything from groomsmen and ring bearer corsages to botanical-rich table-toppers and cakeaccenting rose petals. 84 84

SWEET PEAS FLORAL DESIGN

• MAKE ARRANGEMENTS: Find a collaborative floral designer with whom you connect. Reputable florists will be able to supply references and a work portfolio.

• STICK TO YOUR STYLE: Not only should blooms be season and style appropriate, they should also complement bridal party attire (especially the bride’s gown), venue, theme, and color palette. Bring fabric and/or color swatches to meetings with florists.

Hey,

Back Talk

Mr.DJ! Looking to put a new spin on the same old playlist? Then retire the turntable mainstays and tune into the top 10 songs we never want to hear again—at your reception or any other event for that matter.—Jenn Thornton

YMCA by The Village People Okay, it’s still kind of fun, but the choreography becomes dangerous when alcohol is involved. The Chicken Dance The biggest ‘I Don’t’ on this list for reasons that should be obvious. The Macarena by Los del Rio For the record, we were never into this. The Hokey Pokey Honestly? Every Breath You Take by The Police We like it too, but it’s about stalking. Jesse’s Girl by Rick Springfield Cheating. Why acknowledge the elephant in the room? You Give Love a Bad Name by Bon Jovi You give love a bad name… and so does this song. My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion My heart will just plain stop if we have to hear this song one more time. Who Let the Dogs Out by Baha Men Who cares? Love Stinks by J. Geils Band Nice.
