HEROES Dad: A son’s first hero, a daughter’s first love.

When people think of Heroes, often a Marvel or DC Comic character comes to mind. In my home Wonder Woman is the character hero of the day. There are many heroes among us everywhere we look; in our fire departments, police departments; the family who rescues a dog from a shelter or the person in front of you in the Starbucks line who pays for your drink. Whatever the situation, a Hero touches our heart, or in my case, my home. For over 15 years now, you have been reading publisher’s letters written by my husband, Tony, and in this issue we asked readers to send in letters about their own personal heroes. This gave me the perfect opportunity to share with you about Tony, my husband, father of my children, best friend, and my hero. Family is his #1! Even though he works around the clock to produce multiple magazines, he always takes time out for his children, who are practically all grown up. However, there is much more to Tony that makes him my hero. We met when we were in our 20s. I admired him for his perseverance and drive to go all the way with new ideas, whether it was a business venture or a home project. Together we have 3 beautiful children: Nick, Sabrina, and Lucas. When Sabrina was 15 months old, we found out that she has Autism. There are many things we went through during this process toward the diagnosis of Autism that can tear families apart. But Tony was there through every appointment, test, and emotional turn we took. Things aren’t easy raising a special needs child, but there is no other person in the world I would have shared this journey with. Every day he shares a passion for spending time with our kids, and the simple joys in life. From soccer and baseball coach, to teaching our boys to drive, he has taught our sons to be men of character—to be polite and responsible, caring and compassionate. I couldn’t be more proud to be married to such a man. To all the dads out there, Happy Father’s Day to you all. No matter what we wives say or how much your kids don’t show gratitude, just know that we really love you. Love always, Valerie

Stockton’s newest nano brewery, Channel Brewing Co., is more than a line-up of brews. The business partners (and friends) Billy Chaddock, Brandon Piasecki, Erich Rau, and Ryan Sharpe, hock beer with a bigger picture—a drink for men on the go; and they aren’t just on their way anywhere, they are hitting the beach, going backpacking, and ultimately getting outdoors. “It’s what we enjoy doing,” Channel Brewing President Billy explains of the owners. “You live in Stockton, you’re only an hour and a half away from the beach and hour and a half away from the

mountains. It’s a point in between a lot of places.” Inspiration, at least in this case, is a two-way street. Not only may the beer inspire customers to get out there and enjoy the outdoors, the customers inspired the mission behind the beer. “I’ve noticed that just looking at our market, a lot of the people who enjoy craft beer, they’re outdoors people. To me, it’s fitting,” Billy says. An outdoorsmen himself, Billy started hunting and fishing in Montana where he was stationed while serving in the Air Force. He’s continued those passions in Stockton, and added backpacking to the list. As a group, Billy, Brandon, Erich, and Ryan have been knocking off 30-40 mile stretches of the Pacific Coast Trail together. They’re inviting customers to join them on their adventures. In summer 2016, the group completed their first Channel Brewing Retreat, and is planning more open to the public. They are also launching a kickball league under the Channel Brewing name, and on days off, customers can catch the crew playing disc golf. Taproom staff is knowledgeable on local outings and trails and are encouraged to share that knowledge with interested customers. “It’s hard for me to brand something that I’m not passionate about,” Billy said. “I don’t just have this corporate mindset about what is going to make the most dollars in the shortest amount of time… for me, if I cant get behind it, I can’t do it.” On a personal level, Billy wants to encourage those in Stockton to reach for their dreams. In a time of hope and revitalization in the community, he said it’s important to go for it. “I’ve just met a lot of people who want to do something but feel like they don’t have the resources to do it,” he explains. “I don’t have a big background in marketing or business or accounting or beer for that matter… it was just a matter of wanting to do it.” Oh, and he drinks a lot of beer, so that helps. Because Billy knew he lacked some of the skills necessary to launch this sort of business, he turned to friends 34

to fill in the blanks. His brother in law came on board, and then two of his childhood friends who he hadn’t talked to in about a decade. He just saw their skill sets through social media and reached out. Ryan is the brewer, Eric handles multimedia, and Brandon is the “hype man”/event coordinator. Together, they make a good team. They set up a KickStarter and raised $42,651 in 45 days. It took some time and some more capital, but they made it. “We have really just embedded ourselves in the community,” Billy says of getting started. They work with the Children’s Museum of San Joaquin County, local art collectives, Little Free Libraries, and other community organizations, fueling another shared passion. “In Stockton, people are looking for brands to latch onto that have hope for the city, that highlight the good, and that give back to Stockton,” Billy says. ALL HEADACHES If you are unsure of the difference between a headache and a migraine, chances are, you’ve never experienced a migraine. Its symptoms are unlike any other headache. Migraines are an inherited tendency to experience painful headaches that include disturbed vision, sensitivity to light, sound and smells, feeling sick, and vomiting. Migraine attacks can cause sufferers to cover windows to block light and rest in bed for hours or even days. According to Dr. Sami Moshi, board certified neurologist at Adventist Health Lodi Memorial, “In more than 80 percent of patients, the onset of migraines is before 30 years of age.” Dr. Moshi also adds that the percentage of sufferers changes per race and gender. Migraines respectively occur in women at rates of 20 percent in whites, 16 percent in Africans, and 19 percent in Asians. For white, African, and Asian men

the breakdown is lower at respectively nine, seven, and four percent. Migraine treatment like most modern medicine is evolving and improving. Dr. Moshi explains that overall management of migraines has two approaches: try and lower the number of migraine episodes through preventative methods and try different medications. Preventative techniques include elimination of known causes such as alcohol consumption and some foods. Known food triggers vary from person to person. Some common food culprits include those that contain tyramine or phenylethylamine, two amino acids found in chocolate, aged or fermented cheese (e.g., cheddar, blue, Brie, and all hard and “moldy” cheeses), soy, nuts, citrus fruits, and vinegar (red and balsamic). Lifestyle changes can also prevent migraines, including more exercise, better sleep, and avoiding stress and situations that create anxiety.

Should changes in diet and lifestyle fail, a number of drugs can also prevent migraines. These medications include beta-blockers, blood pressure medications, seizure drugs like valproic acid and topimarate, and some antidepressants. Over-thecounter food supplements such as riboflavin and CoQ10 also prevent recurrent episodes. Migraine attacks can be treated with NSAIDs, including Ibuprofen and naproxen. Other medications known as “triptans” can be used for severe cases. Sometimes migraine attacks become so intense that patients must go to the doctor’s office to be injected with drugs such as toradol or even steroids. An emerging treatment has been found using Botox injections done in the doctor’s office. Small injections of Botox are made into shallow muscles in seven areas of the head and neck.

Back acne (lovingly referred to as “bacne”) is embarrassing, inconvenient, and nasty. Facial acne is one thing since people can see it from a mile away and get used to it easily. But, if you’re heading to the beach this summer or just want to cut loose at the next family reunion while grilling out, you’ll want to try and make sure your back is on point—not just with tight trapezius muscles, but also with clear skin.

WHAT CAUSES BACNE?

One of the leading causes of acne of any kind, including the back variety, is simple genetics. Some of us have oilier backs than others, creating a ripe breeding ground for pesky pimples to emerge on your shoulders and back. Other commonly attributed causes of bacne are the same culprits that often contribute to facial acne as well. Poor hygiene—like skipping showers, leaving your gym shirt on, or going weeks (or even months, gasp!) without washing your bed sheets, blankets, and pillow cases—can initiate or exacerbate breakouts. Your diet is a major factor as well—not drinking enough water or taking in too much sugar can almost always directly contribute to acne breakouts. If you believe genetics play no part, practice sound hygiene, and eat well—bacne can still plague you. The reality of the situation is that excess sweat, stress, and even hormone imbalance (such as from workout supplements or steroids) can result in breakouts too. The body is sensitive, and sometimes bacne is part of that. 46

TREATING YOUR BACNE

All hope is not lost, though. Even if you do notice some pesky back zits popping up to ruin your summer vibes, there are a few things you can do to take back control. Lay groundwork for clear skin by washing bedding weekly, showering twice a day (especially post workout), sleeping in a clean shirt, and limiting sugar intake while increasing water intake. If those practices don’t seem to do the trick, try exfoliating your back weekly (one to three times a week with a heavy-duty exfoliator for the body, not face) to remove excess dead skin cells that can build up in hair follicles and result in cysts. Also try using soaps and detergents designed for sensitive skin. If you’ve practiced what we preach and are still facing bacne, consult a dermatologist to get to the root of the problem with expert assistance.

It’s an ephemeral moment that makes a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of Stockton. Amidst live music that carries in waves across the venue and its many guests, portraits and paintings, photography and sculptures hang along walls and racks. Some showcase a moment in time, immortalized. Others encompass a singular thought, or multitude of feelings. By tomorrow, this symphony of work will be gone. So is the life and style of the pop-up gallery, belonging to the minds behind the 1850 Collective. “We have shows how and whenever we want. It’s one of those experiences that makes us connect more to viewers, because it’s kind of

like that special moment,” Gabriel Reyes, President of 1850 Collective, explains. “I know that it seems like the ideal thing would be to have a gallery somewhere, but many of our members like that we don’t. We’re more grassroots.” The 1850 Collective organized its first gallery in March 2016, named after the year Stockton was officially founded. It was the brain child brought to life by over a dozen local

artists, and nurtured by the growing downtown community. “Each artist kind of felt that it was hard to get your work out there as an individual. And so, joining up, there was around twenty of us. And we could do our own art show instead of joining smaller groups,” Gabriel adds. Venues and local business showcase their support by donating space for the gallery, food and drink, and services. Many have chipped in from the very beginning. “As our collective grew, our relationship grew stronger with Goodstock. Not only them, but with Channel Brewing, [and] with Cast Iron; many of us [started] up around the same time.” From the rooftop of the Stockton Hotel, to Millie’s Art Corner, the Federal Building, Cal Pine, and Brick and Mortar—the 1850 Collective has brought their works to life. The Collective hosts a wide variety of artists, ranging from painters and graphic designers, to photographers, DJ’s, and more. New members are selected after they’ve hung out with the Collective at a gallery. “We [like] for it to be a friend of a friend who’s [already] in the Collective. We want to [foster] that bond we all have together. After the show, we usually take it to a vote.” For the Collective, there’s no better feeling than showcasing their work to the community. And as Gabriel notes, “The feeling you get when someone comes and sees artwork of, not even yours, but of a colleague or a friend’s—it brings a feeling of joy.”

Old futuristic movies—like 2001: A Space Odyssey—that depicted a design style of modern elegance, with classic white and stark contrasts in their set designs, could have become the blueprint for some styles now trending in the kitchen. Meanwhile, its counterpart, the bathroom, is seeing a resurgence of older designs reflecting the 1920s—only this time with a touch of 21stcentury sophistication.

The basic foundation of any kitchen or bathroom is color schemes. Gone are the warm colors of the last 15 years to be replaced with cooler overall looks and combinations of features. Contemporary soft gray walls contrast wooden cabinets stained in lighter accent finishes. A local trend in remodeling according to Tiffany Gomes—President of Classic Design Interiors—is painted cabinets of all colors and unique trims. Another trend that reflects the Space Odyssey look leans toward industrial looks where black and white creates stark definition. These designs use technological advances to provide seamless functionality to produce smooth surfaces without the protrusion of handles or pulls. Cabinet design using hydraulics and “easy-close” doors that fold up, or drawers with buttons that enable one-push open. “We’re seeing a lot of younger clients interested in the industrial designs,” says Brian Holtz, co-owner of HT Home Design. Technology drives operations in

these kitchens. Appliances are set flush with cabinets and smooth stovetops that feature touch-screen settings operated like today’s Smart Phone technology. Wireless keypads run everything from lighting to fans—even oven temperature and refrigerator settings can be wirelessly remote controlled via Smart Phone apps. Add to the elegance of these rooms with the latest trend in remodels—the addition of composite surfaces made of natural stone

such as quartz. “We’ve seen a movement away from granite countertops to replication of natural stone like quartz,” says Tiffany Gomes. “These stone surfaces are more consistent with something you would get out of a quarry. Each slab is unique, but with composite quartz, you can expect consistency with movement and the look of natural stone.” When it comes to the bathroom, the continuing theme of industrial design

Using the industrial look of styles once found in metal shops, current bathroom features apply exposed metal plumbing and dual-purpose piping. The abovelevel sink bowl is designed in clear glass. Then these bathrooms use smart storage elements like the piping below the vanity to act as towel racks or open metal shelving for easy access to more towels and supplies. Another captivating and artistic trend harkens back to Mediterranean-inspired mosaics where old world tradition meets contemporary flair. Now that summer has settled across San Joaquin, you better believe backyard barbecues are igniting everywhere. But for those that crave the succulent, smoky flavor of charbroiled brisket and sizzling sausage links with no time to spare for hours of marinating and grilling, a singular restaurant along the Mile offers tempting dishes that boast authentic flavor. Enter Que 225, our latest in dining digs that’s been all the rave for locals and those seeking true Midwestern

flavor. “We’re just trying to have a real Midwest BBQ experience. We felt that Stockton didn’t have anything that reflected that,” Mike Buell, co-owner of Que 225, explains. “We get people that are in here at least once, if not twice, a week. Some will say ‘I’m from the Midwest and I haven’t had BBQ like this since I’ve left.’ It makes me feel really good.”’ Modern design meets rustic comfort in Que 225’s interior. Guests popping in for a visit can place their order up front and then find a seat at one of the many tables situated around the restaurant. Neatly arranged alongside the napkins are sauces readily available to pour on the side for dipping or directly over piping hot orders of ribs and chicken breast. Food is served on large metal trays, perfect for when your meal needs to be pulled straight off the bone. But what’s the story behind the unique name and flavors of Que 225? Mike was only too happy explain! “Que is short for BBQ, and 225 is the temperature we smoke the barbecue. It was one of those times where we tried to find something unique [in a name].” Switching careers, from construction to the barbecue

business, was a leap for Mike and his partner—Will Linton—who moved their passion for cooking to the forefront of their career. “For us, it was more of this realization that we could make really good barbecue.” Having celebrated their first year of business this March, Que 225 is still growing strong in the hearts and minds of barbecue fanatics everywhere. Those coming in for the first time tend to order the ribs and the brisket, while the lunch time rush has no qualms scooping up a few pulled pork sandwiches for the road. Platters—served with two sides and cornbread—come with your choice of sliced brisket, pulled pork, chicken breast, or LA hot links. And if you don’t like making tough decisions, you don’t have to. Que 225 also offers up 2 or 3 meat combos, allowing you the chance to sample everything in just a few delectable visits. “What I like, is for people to get some food and hang out. Grab a couple beers and watch a couple games on the TV,” Mike grins. “We’ve got two TVs, so we usually have some sort of game going on. We have six taps and when we run out we switch to a new variety.”

As if the cornerstone of barbecue restaurants hadn’t provided us enough reason to drop by for lunch and dinner, Que 225 also serves up generous portions by the pound for those that ask. And yes! They do offer catering services, meaning you’ll never be far from your Midwest favorites for family occasions, special events, and more. SCOTTO’S WINE & CIDER BAR 

Not many new world wineries are so deeply rooted in the old world as Scotto’s Wine & Cider Bar in Lodi. The Scotto family traces their winemaking back over 100 years, to when the Scottos’ great-great-grandfather started making wine for his friends, family and neighbors in Italy. After leaving Italy, his wine expertise passed down through the generations, even surviving prohibition. The wine they sold in the U.S became known as ‘Rustico’, and the Scotto family wine brand, Villa Armando, is now one of the oldest in America. But, don’t let their long history fool you; the winemakers at Scotto’s are some of the most cutting edge vintners on the West Coast. At their Wine & Cider Bar, you can sample favorites from the Scotto Family’s own brand, Lodi Avenue Cellars, such as a 2012 Old Vine Zinfandel, with its ripe red and purple berry notes and chocolate finish, or a unique dry 2016 Sangiovese Rosé, which won the double gold at the California State Fair Wine Competition this year. of course, they still celebrate the achievements of the past, with their classic Rustico, which has now old over 200 million glasses. No stone is left unturned in the Scotto family’s search for fermented perfection. Joining their wine list, are world-class ciders. Paul Scotto, the family winemaker, says he makes “wine by blood and cider by choice”. Their cider flights are a unique alternative to wine tasting. In the warmer months, nothing beats one of their refreshing cider and wine cocktails, such as the apple blueberry Zinfandel. Now that’s a wine spritzer with a twist! When requested, the resident mixologist also whips up delicious one-of-a-kind cocktails by the pint, made from their selection of five ciders on tap. The Scotto family took a big leap when they opened their new tasting room on School Street in Downtown Lodi last year. They wanted to create a place for special

events and live entertainment that was also a hub for the community, recreating the inclusive Italian family dinner table that the Scotto siblings grew up around. The tasting room, located in the former Rusted Mic building, has a nostalgic feel with its exposed brickwork. However, the wines served there are anything but old fashioned. After 25 years, the Scottos remain one of the wine industry’s most innovative families. From selling wine bottles (and now cider growlers) directly to the consumer, to commissioning Internet bloggers to try their hand at blending a new wine, the Scotto siblings know how to take the initiative, and discover the next big trend in wine making.

Just like the legend of the Scottish Queen Mary, the Bloody Mary cocktail’s history is shrouded in mystery. As it was in English history, there are many who claim the throne. Some Legends say the Bloody Mary was invented in Paris in the 20s, and that Hemmingway may have been involved. The famous Comedian, George Jessel, also claimed that he invented it at the famous 21 Club in New York. It does seem like the name may have been the result of a joke! Since its invention as a hangover “cure”, the Bloody Mary has been transformed into a modern classic, by appearing in ads for everything from Tabasco Sauce and Smirnoff Vodka, to Life magazine. After nights spent sampling the best wine that the San Joaquin Valley has to offer, you might just need a morning pick-me-up. Make sure that your ‘hair of the dog’ is the best in town.

The Whiskey Barrel Saloon’s whiskey cocktails may already have a cult-like following, but now they are branching outside of bourbons, with ‘To Die For’ Bloody Marys. Don’t expect anything traditional here; the Bloody Marys are served in a huge mason jar with all the trimmings, for some hipster styling. Those ready to experiment with this classic of the gilded era can try unique twists, like their bacon jalapeno Bloody Mary.

At the Cabana Del Sol, they leave the Bloody Mary’s roots in Paris and New York far behind, and serve a distinctly West Coast take on Spanish and Mediterranean fusion. The Bloody Mary at the Cabana Del Sol comes with an asparagus spear stirrer, and the bartender adds a unique mixture of spices to the classic cayenne pepper. It’s the perfect accompaniment to the smooth Latin Jazz playing in the background.

Coronated the best, The Establishment Saloon creates the most delicious Bloody Marys in town. The weekday bartender, Kayla, has perfected her Bloody Mary recipe, which includes lining the rim with salt and Tajín—a Mexican seasoning made of chile peppers and lime. She finishes her tomato concoction with a skewer of asparagus spears, green peppers, and green beans, with a pickled cocktail onion and a green olive to top it off. BLUEBERRIES Delectably sweet—and often found in pies, scones, and jams—it’s hard to remember that the humble blueberry is referred to as a superfood, and for all the right reasons. The blueberry is one of the few well known fruits that is naturally indigenous to North America. Its nutritional value was popular in Native American tribes, who harvested it not only for food, but as medicine. When settlers arrived onto the shores of America, Native Americans taught many starving colonials how to best preserve the fruit for winter after their crops continued to wane. Blueberries are well known for being a rich source in antioxidants, including myricetin, and anthocyanins. And you can certainly find them chalk full of vitamin C, manganese, and vitamin K1. These nutrients can help in bone health, and immune system and metabolism function, while also reducing the risk of heart disease and lowering blood pressure. They’re well known for combating and preventing cancer. Did you know, though, that studies report that blueberries help with brain health? Because blueberries are high in flavonoids, it’s been shown that those who drink blueberry juice every day experience improved memory. These special little berries are perfect for growing in the backyard, and are easy enough to harvest. A handy tip? Purchase more than one variety to enjoy larger quantities and larger, high-quality berries. Before you know it, you’ll be well on your way to making a variety of unique blueberry-oriented recipes, like the ones we’ve encountered and added for your enjoyment!

MASK INGREDIENTS:

1 Tbsp. oatmeal or oat flour 2-6 Blueberries, fresh or frozen 1 Tsp. raw honey INSTRUCTIONS:

Blend up 1 tablespoon of oatmeal in blender, skip step if using oat flour. Mash up five or six blueberries and mix with honey. Add blended oatmeal or oat flour and continue to mix. Apply to damp skin and let set for 10 – 15 minutes, then add water and gently scrub for extra exfoliation boost. Wipe off any excess with damp wash cloth. *Recipe courtesy of Brit.co

COCONUT LIME MOJITO SHOOTERS with Blueberry INGREDIENTS:

1 can of fat coconut milk • ¾ C. blueberries ½ C. sweetened condensed milk • ½ C. and 3 tbsp. lime juice ¼ C. packed mint leaves, plus extra for optional garnish 1/3 C plus ¼ C. white rum • ¼ C. sugar • 2 Tbsp. water DIRECTIONS:

After cooling for several hours, scoop out thickened top layer of coconut milk out of can and discard water at bottom. Whisk coconut and sweetened condensed milk together and set aside. Mash together blueberries, sugar, and water in saucepan and heat on medium, stirring until mixture is syrupy. Strain syrup and chill. Muddle mint, lime, and rum together until mint releases oils. Strain out mint leaves. Evenly distribute blueberry syrup into bottom of shot glasses. Carefully top with coconut lime mojito.
