Women’s Hair Loss

Why Does it Happen? & What can you do about it? by Angela Spoon

What used to be a “men’s condition” is now quickly becoming a female epidemic. It is scary to think that you could randomly wake up one day and begin to see more hair on the pillow case and less on your head. For women losing their hair, it is a serious blow to femininity and the ideal vision of themselves. We are constantly cutting and coloring to make sure our hair looks the best it can. But what if one day the un-thinkable happens… and it falls out and doesn’t grow back?

1

Question: What causes women’s hair loss?

Answer: Female hair loss can be caused by multiple factors, but the most common cause is an underlying genetic pre-disposition to hair loss known as androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss. Unlike the popular myth that you inherit hair loss from your mother’s father, women can inherit hair loss from either side of the family. This means that women can inherit hair loss from men and vice versa. It is much more common than people know. There are other factors that can cause hair loss or increase hair loss due to family history. They include stress, lifestyle, diet, thyroid dis-function, fungal infections, scalp parasites, and medications (most common hormone replacement and birth control pills).

for the loss, the treatment protocol will vary. Usually though for common female pattern hair loss the protocol is relatively similar. We a have a 9 month program that includes twice weekly office visits for cool light laser treatments for the scalp. This stimulates cell regeneration and is already approved to promote thicker hair. Our program also includes topical pharmaceuticals, hormone therapy balancing cream, nutritional supplementation, holistic hair care products, and topical scalp serums. This is most aggressive treatment that we offer, but it works. When you use everything together the way that our program does, you are bound to get results.

quickly as possible and treat that problem. Don’t try to treat it yourself because it wastes time that could be spent growing hair back. I obviously would recommend to call us and then come in for a consultation. Worst case scenario, you can stop the progression of the loss. Best case, we can dramatically reverse your hair loss and regrow hair. We have had numerous cases where a woman was wearing a wig or extensions when they started the treatment. Then 9 months later they were able to remove their wig permanently or stop getting extensions because their hair had gained so much volume and density.

Question: What do your clinics use to help women with thinning hair?

Answer: Depending on the reason

Question: What advice would you give a woman who is dealing with this problem?

Answer: Find the source of the problem as

Female Hair Loss on the Rise In a recent study by the Dermatology Online Journal, it states that at least 10 percent of premenopausal women will experience hair loss and that a staggering 50 percent to 75 percent of women will lose hair after 64 years of age. In a recent report on NBC Online it states these numbers are low and that female hair loss is seriously on the rise.

But why are women losing hair now more than ever? And what can be done about it? After contacting numerous hair loss professionals in the valley, one seemed to have his finger on the pulse of the problem, and this is what he said:

4

Question: Is there hope for women with thinning hair? How do you control it?

Answer: There certainly is. There are so

many tools that can be used to control female hair loss and reverse it in many cases. Once you have established the reason for the hair loss and it can be treated with a variety of methods. Unfortunately, most general physicians simply don’t have the time or the knowledge to get a full understanding of why a woman is losing her hair. The female patient is then left combing the internet for solutions that rarely leads to any real answer.

5

Question: How you do know what is causing your hair loss?

Answer: A simple patient history is the easiest way. Many women have blood tests for hormonal issues, thyroid dysfunction, iron levels, and vitamin D deficiency. Unfortunately this rarely produces any other cause other than normal pattern hair loss. At our clinics we use a video microscope to analyze the condition of the scalp at 50x magnification. At this level we can tell if the client has loss due to stress, diet, infection of the hair follicle, or simple hormonally related hair loss.

6

Question: Is there maintenance required?

Answer: 99% yes. I usually tell people it’s like brushing your teeth. If you don’t brush them and go to the dentist, your teeth will rot and fall out. The same goes for your hair. If you have a genetic hair loss problem, you have two options; oneyou can treat the problem long term, or two- let your hair fall out and go bald. Clearly our clients choose hair.

Dentistry Done

Differently!

What if there was a place you could go where you could get crowns done from start where industry-leading dental innovations were created; where everything from usual to complicated dentistry is routine; and where the dentist himself is sought after nationally and internationally to discuss the latest techniques and innovations in dentistry? There is—and it’s right in your own backyard. absolute cutting-edge in dentistry in order to make your visits as short, easy and painless as possible. When Dr. John A. Garza, a licensed general dentist, envisioned opening the location 13 years ago, he vowed to create a locale that was someplace he would want to go if he were the patient. He wanted to create a place that was co-diagnostic and interactive, and where the patient themselves would be able to make a decision about their dental care based on what they were shown could be done via the latest interactive technological tools.

offered are digital ones, which reduce patient doses of radiation by 98%, and computers at the side of each chair so patients can view the x-rays (and other images) along with the dentist. Some patients joke that “it’s like NASA here!” And that’s a good thing. “For example, with our smile makeovers, it takes about three hours to do an 8-tooth makeover. There are TV screens over the patient’s head playing movies, and throughout allows the patient to leave with color, shape and teeth that they want. And because we’re doing it together, they end up with a custom smile, rather than one where a remote lab technician is making the same thing for everybody and you’re hoping that what is sent back for you is what you want. With this technique, the patient is very involved, and we’re able to tweak it as we go,” Dr. Garza explains. The one-visit solutions are possible thanks to the CEREC by Sirona Dental Systems. It’s the world’s only system for the fabrication of all ceramic dental restorations in one busy schedule for dental care! Dr. Garza is also the creator of The Crane, an innovative and industry-changing tool that removes a crown and bridge without the pounding tools dentists used previously. His expertise regarding this device and his extensive knowledge in general is called upon often in a speaking capacity, and he has taught and given lectures everywhere from overseas to nationally at places like the University of Oklahoma and the Southwest Dental Convention. So whether you need a routine cleaning, a root canal, crown, or complete smile makeover, don’t you owe it to yourself to put yourself in the hands of one of the industry’s most respected dentists, at a trusted location that offers the most cutting-edge technologies and services so that you have the easiest and most advanced dental care possible?

Miss Arizona:

JENNIFER SMESTAD BUILDING Hope and Support for Children with Neurological Disorders. By: Sarah Bel Gray

A few years ago, Jennifer Smestad was sitting in the audience of the Miss America pageant, cheering on a friend who was up for the title. Today, she proudly dons the crown and sash; though she didn’t venture down the conventional beauty queen route, there’s no mistaking that Jennifer can hold her own amongst the others. Arizona born and raised, Jennifer Smestad is proud to call Gilbert her home. “I could see myself living here forever,”

she stated. Jennifer didn’t grow up in the world of pageants and tiaras, but found herself an audience member at the Miss Arizona pageant in 2011. She was encouraged by what Miss Arizona stands for, and impressed by the Miss America Organizations strong belief in supporting important causes. After watching her friend grow as a woman through her year as Miss Arizona, Jennifer decided to get involved. She ran in both Miss Cave Creek and Miss Tempe pageants, winning VALLEY LIFESTYLES magazine | AUGUST 2013

‘First Runner Up’ in both competitions. After winning Miss City of Maricopa, she found her way to the state title. All this, in only her first year of pageant competition. Jennifer passionately stands for the hope and support of children with neurological disorders. At age 10, Jennifer was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome. Miraculously, after treatments of Natural Chinese Acupuncture, she saw a 95% improvement. She then learned how to control her remaining symptoms, and uses that personal 22

victory as encouragement when speaking with children who are experiencing the difficulties of this syndrome. Her hope is to use her personal battle with Tourette Syndrome to help a child who is dacing challenges that this syndrome presents. “If I could just help one person feel hopeful, a hope I didn’t have, that would mean the world to me.” She paused, “I felt like I was alone, so one of the most important things to me is to be there for them.” The legacy she wants to leave: “To show people that you can overcome, and to never give up. I believe that I’m here for a reason, and that God gave me Tourette Syndrome to be able to show people to never give up, no matter what.” Jennifer is a junior at Grand Canyon University majoring in Communications and is also considering Nutrition and Health as a core part of her curriculum. She enjoys hiking and all of the beautiful outdoor activities that our state has to offer. Her favorite being hiking Camelback Mountain. In her down time, Jennifer enjoys shopping at local boutiques. One Wing Boutique in Downtown Chandler is one of her favorites. She also loves to shop for accessories at Charming

Charlie at SanTan Village. Her favorite local place to eat is Joe’s Barbecue in Downtown Gilbert, to which she exclaimed, she “loves it!” Jennifer has been a lover of Joe’s Barbecue for as long as she can remember. Something that a lot of people might not know about her; she is a big country music fan. She excitedly reports that she has released three of her own songs recently. You can purchase them on iTunes under her stage name “Jenny Smestad”. When I asked what her biggest goal in life is, she said. “to become a county singer!” A true Arizonan inside and out, Jennifer’s last words in our time together made me proud that she is representing Arizona. She simply smiled and said, “I love my state!”

The action/comedy/crime film stars Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Bill Paxton and Edward James Olmos, among other fine talent. In the film, Solorsano portrays the character of “Ferret Nose Julio” and he had a chance to meet, work with and learn from some fantastic talents working in the industry. During production of “2 Guns”, Solorsano spent three weeks shooting in New Orleans and four weeks filming in New Mexico. The actor had previously done some acting in short and indie films and working on “2 Guns” taught him some more in-depth industry lessons. “I learned it is very important to be on time, and mainly, how hard a crew works to put it all together,” stated Solorsano. “It’s always important to maintain a courteous and polite attitude toward everyone.” As an actor based in East Mesa, it can be challenging to find work as a film actor. But after taking acting classes and doing some short films over the past few years, Solorsano was referred to Dani’s Agency and has been very happy with the work they do in securing him auditions. “(Dani’s) taught me the values I needed to transition from amateur to a more professional level,” finished Solorsano. TAKING FLIGHT IN THE VALLEY Butterfly Wonderland takes flight as one of the newest attractions in the Valley. By: Lindsey Rodrian As an adult, one of my favorite elementary school memories is the observation of a Monarch Butterfly’s metamorphosis. Every morning, I would eagerly make my way to our butterfly habitat to check the status of our ever-changing classroom pet. I was amazed that our cute, sluggish, milkweed loving caterpillar disappeared inside a hanging shell, and emerged a radiant, fluttering butterfly. This particular miracle of life is an enchanting experience despite your age. And luckily, for us Phoenicians, the largest butterfly pavilion in America is now in our backyard! The Butterfly Wonderland, spanning 5 acres, is located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Scottsdale. If you are as fascinated as I, you must visit the Butterfly Emergence Gallery. Offering a first-hand opportunity to observe the four stages of Metamorphosis, the gallery is an excellent, and gorgoues learning opportunity. Here, you will smile at the brightly colored caterpillars inching along, as your eyes are drawn to bright gold and teal chrysalises delicately hanging. Keep an eye on the chrysalises! You may be able to witness a butterfly open their wings for the very first time! The pleasantries that fill your mind as you catch sight of a graceful butterfly in flight, is now a dreamy enjoyment available in any season. As you stroll through the 10,000 square foot atrium of Butterfly Wonderland, thousands of butterflies from around the world fill the space. As they make their way from one tropical plant to the next, hold out a steady hand and you may find that a new friend will land on your finger. While admiring the tranquility of this lush atrium, don’t forget to stop at the Koi Pond! ‘Flight of the Butterflies’ a gorgeous 3D film, documents the amazing journey of the Monarch Butterfly. Here, sit back and enjoy the specials moments captured by a talented production team, as they follow hundreds of millions of Monarchs. As you watch them travel across the United

States, you will surely be in awe of the longest known insect migration on Earth. Document your fluttering adventure with a stop at the Butterfly Treasure Gift Shop. Turn your little one into their new favorite insect with darling, sparkly wings of their own. Books, creative jewelry and other souvenirs are also available, as a way to share a bit of your special experience with your friends and family. This interactive learning environment also offers an up-close view into the world of Harvester Ants and Honey Bees, two of the most interesting insects in the world. Open seven days a week from 9AM-5PM, this wonderland can conveniently enchant your busy schedule. As a versatile venue, this spot is perfect for a romantic date, a fun day with the family, an amazing fieldtrip, a birthday or meeting place, and a truly lovely learning experience.

THE SENATORS

by: Sarah Bel Gray

Jesse Teer – Vocals, Guitars, Mandolin Adam ‘Rooster’ Teer – Bass, Harmonica Joseph Bitz – Trumpet, Keys, Lap Steel Bryan James – Guitar, Banjo Jason Yee – Drums

a sound that harkens back to the early Folk, Americana and back-beat Country while maintaining a spirited and relevant edge. Q. What genre of music do you consider your work to be?

A. Indie/folk. We get all sorts of interesting comparisons from fans… e.g. Sufjan Stevens meets Johnny Cash. We love the creativity that folks have used when describing our music. As we are putting together our second album I feel that we’ve really found our identity. We can’t wait to share that with the world Q. Who writes your songs, and what goes into your song writing process?

A. I wrote much of our first album starting in ’08, bouncing concepts off of my brother while he was out in Memphis. Since then, we’ve really learned how to work together to write some great music. Q. What is your favorite song, collectively, to perform live? A. It really depends. The entire process of playing our music live is freeing. We tend to tailor our sets to the venue we are playing (more upbeat for rowdy crowds, more intricate and delicate for crowds that have their “listening ears” on). Playing a live set is where I think we really shine as a band.

28

VALLEY LIFESTYLES magazine | AUGUST 2013

Q. Do you have any upcoming shows? A. In August, we are looking forward to getting out on the road. (You can keep up with the band’s tour schedule to see when they will be playing in The Valley on their website) Q. The Senators are passionate about serving the community. Please tell us about some causes/ local charities that you partner with or would like to partner with?

A. For us, giving back to the community that has raised us is a must. We are currently working with Feeding America, partnered with United Food Bank, and we kicked off that relationship at a benefit concert/food drive on July 25th. We also look forward to working closely with Habitat for Humanity as well as supporting after-school music and art programs in valley schools. Q. How can fans-to-be gain access to your music?

A. We love the idea that music should be a shared commodity, so we are re-tracking and releasing our first album. This time, the album will be released with upgraded production and a new bonus track later this summer. The album will be available in its entirety online as a free download for everyone.

For now, the album is available for purchase through Amazon, iTunes, and other online retailers. You can stream Harsher… via our website (theSenatorsMusic.com) where you can find links to other content on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Spotify.

SPECIAL NEEDS REQUIRE SPECIAL FITNESS TRAINING By: Lindsey Rodrian / PHOTO: SARAH BEL GRAY

We had the opportunity to spend some time with Joseph Adams, a nationally certified personal trainer, while he gave us helpful fitness tips for children and those with special needs. Q. How does personal training differ from other exercise options? A. Personal training optimizes your results. A ‘One size fits all’ program doesn’t cater to everyone. Personal training focuses on personal strengths and weaknesses, while finding a program that fits best. Q. What does Funktional Fitness offer for children? A. Over every summer, fall and spring break Funktional Fitness offers Funk Fit Functional Performance Training (FPT) for Kids and Teens. These programs focus on building children’s confidence, and heart rate, while having fun. Q. What is the focus of FPT for Kids? A. We focus on speed, strength, flexibility, injury prevention, nutritional education and more, with a different focus every week. We provide a safe environment, certified trainers and an active escape from the heat. Q. How often should children exercise? A. Children should participate in 60 minutes of activity per day. Whether this be flying a kite, walking the family dog, or another activity that gets them up and moving. Q. Can you suggest some activities for parents to get them active with their children? A. What’s cool about being stuck inside is that it gives you the opportunity to be really creative! You can make an obstacle course with your child, including a game of Twister, jump rope, hopscotch and other fun activities you can create at home. Q. What activities do you focus on when working with a disabled client? A. We work on many active and multi-tasking activities. For example, I have a client with Williams Syndrome. I use the wobble board and slide board for many exercises, while having him work with a medicine or basketball. For those with Autism, I get them active with the use of medicine balls and interactive games. Joe has been active in the FPT children’s program for the last 2 years. In addition, he offers personal training for adults and disabled or injured clients. He strives to teach all of his students the fundamentals of a healthy, improved lifestyle.

WINGED HOPE:

Family Advocacy Foundation By: Sarah Bel Gray

Jessica Nicely truly embodies her name to a ‘T.’ She is genuinely one of the nicest people I have ever met. When we sat down to talk about her charity, Winged Hope, she said she really “shouldn’t be” where she is today, according to statistics. Jessica is a survivor of child abuse. However, instead of allowing her traumatic past to shape the woman she is today, she chose to stand up for others who are experiencing similar situations. Her intense passion for this cause can be seen so earnestly in the way she speaks about her foundation, Winged Hope. After spending nearly 16 years working with a variety of charities and organizations, Jessica founded Winged Hope in 2012. This organization exists to support and empower the victims of abuse, while raising community awareness. Winged Hope is partnering with Pinal and Maricopa County to build Advocacy Centers in both areas. These facilities will aim to create a victim focused program based under one roof. Allowing law enforcement, child protection professionals, prosecutors, victim advocates, forensic interviewers, medical professionals, and mental health providers the opportunity to work alongside each other in the fight against abuse. The goal of the Advocacy Center is to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of Crimes Against Persons investigations, while reducing the stress and trauma to the victims. The centers will also help provide much needed counseling, treatment, and constant support. In addition, the center will be used as a headquarters for organizations, like Winged

“Child abuse casts a shadow the length of a lifetime.” - Herbert Ward Hope, in their pursuit of justice and their passion for awareness in the surrounding communities. Winged Hope’s motto is “Together We Can.” Those three little words mean so much when placed in the hands of a community. Winged Hope has many volunteer outlets available. Financial donations can be made through their “12 for 12 Giving Program.” You can sign up to donate $12 each month for the next 12 months, which is approximately 40 cents per day. The funds rendered from this donation project aids Winged Hopes efforts to build Advocacy Centers in our backyards. But, the most important way to become involved, according to Jessica, is to remain vigilant and understand the signs of both domestic violence and child abuse. Being silent should not be an option, as people’s lives depend on your voice. As Martin Luther King once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” For more information:

Red, White and Rawhide JULY 4th: RAWHIDE

Chandler’s favorite Western Town threw a 4th of July party to remember. Multiple bands set the mood throughout the night, while children danced and smiled on the grass surrounding the stage. Bands included Roger Clyne, the Latin All Stars, Lenny Williams, Tom Wagner, Los Garcia Bros and others. The western streets were filled with cowboys, gunfighters, performances and hand rolled cigar stations. The town was certainly in full effect under the lights of the fireworks. Rawhide Steakhouse was open to enjoy an ever appropriate meaty T-Bone steak, in celebration of America! Yeehaw!

LDFIELD a gold

mining ghost

town

By LINDSEY RODRIAN / PHOTOS SARAH BEL GRAY

Nestled at the base of the historic Apache Trail, Goldfield Ghost Town is a site to be seen. The quaint authenticity surrounding the town’s “Main Street” will surely take you back in time. This local attraction has something for everyone, while possessing the power to keep the family occupied all day. The atmosphere and aesthetics is the perfect setting for a steak dinner, a bowl of ice cream or an underground stroll through the gold mines. Established in the late 1800’s, the town of Goldfield was fueled by the discovery of high grade gold ore. Miners quickly rushed to occupy the area, building a post office, multiple saloons, and a school house. But, as the quality and quantity of the gold decreased, miners moved on, leaving Goldfield a ‘ghost town’. Bob Schoose, owner of Goldfield Ghost Town, brought the historic town back to life in the 1980’s. As a mining and ghost town enthusiast, Bob’s dream was to restore and preserve the history of the mining

period he loved so dearly. Over the last 30 years, he has used old newspapers and other significant historical documents to piece the town back together. Today, the streets of Goldfield Ghost Town are bustling with cowboys, miners and historians. The ‘town folk’ that occupy the un-paved streets and buildings are quite the characters. Dressed in everything from chaps and spurs to corsets and bell skirts, they are sure to put a smile on your face while educating and entertaining. Start your exploration at the Historical Museum. The walk-through exhibits give insight to the history of the town, Apache area and the Dutchman Gold Mine. Western Film enthusiasts will find themselves in heaven on the second floor of this museum. The space spotlights Western films shot in and around the Superstition Mountains and Apache Trail. For those that have thick skin, be sure to stop in to the Reptile Exhibit. Here, you will be met by a kind and knowledgeable

reptile-lover, who will take the time to explain the history and characteristics of the many live reptiles and invertebrates that call Goldfield’s exhibit home, year round. As you stroll through the town stop into the Jailhouse. As you step food on the rickety wood panel floor, you will be ‘greeted’ by the mouthy outlaws and scoundrels occupying the cells. Don’t get too close! They may try to grab your hand and pull you in! This point in your adventures would be the perfect time to give any “Negative Nancy” an attitude adjustment. Just close the vacant cell and lock the door; the townspeople will have some fun with the newest jailhouse addition, gawking, prodding and questioning the character of the outlaw. Every 10 minutes, a local history buff guides small or large groups, underground, through the mines. As the guide explains the history and function of the mine and equipment, be on alert for dynamite explosions! I’m sure by now you have worked up quite an appetite. Craving a steak, you say? EYE STORM

by: Sarah Bel Gray i storm images provided by: Mike Olbinski

Arizona’s Storm Chaser Arizona’s monsoon season is now in full swing, and we caught up with the man who holds the title, “Arizona Storm Chaser” firmly in his hands. Mike Olbinski’s name hit the radar in 2011 with his beautiful image of the mile-high, dust storm that seemed to swallow the entirety of Phoenix. And, ever since

then, his Arizona storm photos can be found everywhere from The Smithsonian’s website to the news desks of CNN. We at Valley Lifestyles had the privilege of a first-hand experience with Mike as he captured his first haboob of the 2013 storm season. The clouds began to roll

in from the east, about an hour past Tucson. A giant smile spread across Mike’s face as we drove further into the desert. “There’s a haboob rolling in!” Mike cheered, as excited comments flooded his live storm chasing feed from the computer mounted to the passenger’s seat beside him. With a second check of my seat belt, I settled into the back seat, and we quickly continued down the I-10 East toward the massive brown cloud making its way toward us. Mike’s passion for extreme weather photography stemmed as a teenager. While hiking with friends, he took a photo of a set of clouds, and that, started it all. When I asked what piqued his interest, he paused for a moment and said, “I didn’t fully realize my passion until I noticed how many photos of weather I had in my image galleries.” “I’ve always noticed cool looking weather,” he smiled, “I guess it’s always been there the whole time.”

I simply “oohed and awed” as the sky before us turned from a beautiful light blue to a stormy dark gray. Mike’s interest in photography grew after the birth of his four-year-old daughter, and frequent chasing companion, Lyla. After she was born, he remembers wanting to take more and more photos of her. But, it wasn’t until he took a snapshot from his point-and-shoot of a beautiful lightning strike in Phoenix, that he began to invest more into his hobby. “I just parked my car during a storm, and rolled down my window. I set my camera on the side mirror to steady it and ended up getting an amazing photo.” Olbinski sent it into the local news station, and they used it on air. It was then he was hooked. His new found hobby had soon become a passion. Mike also began a lifestyle photography business for families, engagements, and wedding photography. The storm chasing world would soon hear of him after the enormous dust storm that engulfed nearly the entire Valley. Olbinski had always wanted to capture a great dust storm, and on July 5, 2011 he heard about a record setting storm approaching Downtown. He drove out and parked his car on the top floor of a parking garage on McDowell Rd and 7th Street. He pulled out his gear, and began shooting a time-lapse of the 52

growing storm that was approaching. The moment he posted the photos and video online, it went viral, and Mike Olbinski’s name became forever synonymous with Arizona’s Monsoon Season. Since then, Olbinski’s work can be seen on nearly every local news station, and has received a lot of national press, including The Today Show and The Weather Channel. He’s been invited several times to speak about his chasing on camera, and even spent time riding around on those fancy helicopters in the sky. Mike’s work can be purchased at local galleries and through his website. This month, he is hosting his first annual workshop - where veteran and aspiring chasers, and even some meteorologists, will join him for four days during the height of our monsoon season. When I asked him if all the notoriety has changed him, he simply chuckled saying that it’s still a little surreal, but he’s definitely blessed that he gets to do something he loves. At first, I wondered if chasing storms was a lonely venture, but after my time with Mike, I realized that he actually is surrounded by a pretty tight knit community of fellow chasers and enthusiasts. These people keep him company via ‘live-satellite’ through TVNweather.com’s Live Chase Feed. On days that he goes out on a chase, Olbinski’s fans and friends can log in directly to his live feed to view streaming videos and chat with him during the entirety of the chase. During our particular chase day, on the nearly 3 1/2 hour drive,

people sent in photography questions for Mike to answer, we talked with them about favorite movies and television shows, and I learned a lot about how large the chasing community is. Several of Mike’s followers were not just in different time-zones, but half way across the world in places like the UK and Australia. Some signed in during the early hours of the morning, just to join him on this chase. As we pulled off the freeway into a small town just past Wilcox, we drove down a road surrounded by farm land. Mike pulled over when he saw a clearing in the desert brush. After turning his car and the dashboard mounted video camera toward the approaching storm, He briskly hopped out of the driver’s seat with two cameras. One for still photos, and the other set to shoot at 30 second long shutter speeds, for his popular time lapses. I simply “oohed and awed” as the sky before us turned from a beautiful light blue to a stormy dark gray. The clouds grew an ominous aqua shade, and the wind picked up any available dust and debris, forming a massive wall of sand barreling toward us. After Mike made a few adjustments to his settings and placed both cameras just where he wanted them, he stepped back, folded his arms and took a deep breath in. I turned in his direction and over the howling wind, he smiled and yelled over the gust “I’m really glad we got something today!”

54

As the stark cold wind bit at me, I pulled my jacket tighter around me and shouted over the noise, “I am too!” With that, we both turned our gaze back toward the wall of sand and watched as its beauty rushed just north of where we stood. Before I could open my mouth to ask another question, Mike grabbed both cameras by their tripods, placed them in the back of his truck, and looked at me. “Ready to keep going?” He asked. “Oh yeah!” I shouted back, and I jumped into his car. We headed back west to outrun the storm, only to stop several miles down the road - to capture it all again. Later in the evening, as the wind pushed the rain sideways and into my ear, He gave me one more proud smile and asked, “Isn’t this awesome?” “Awesome?” I beamed. “This is AMAZING.”

A Better

By Nissa Hallquist

Smile East Valley Looking for a reason to smile? Then you are in the right place. Throughout Maricopa County, you will find all the latest tools and techniques you’ll ever need to get—and keep—a straight, white and healthy smile. The following highlights the latest and greatest advancements available today in cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics and dental hygiene.

VALLEY LIFESTYLES magazine | AUGUST 2013

57

The indirect approach is most suitable for severe cases. These veneers are created in a dental laboratory and then adhered to the damaged teeth later. Composite bonding is appropriate for restoring small cracks, chips and minor discoloration. That process entails having the material fitted to the damaged tooth, molded into shape and hardened all in one sitting. Composite bonding tends to cost less than labcreated porcelain. However, actual cost also depends on where you live, the dentist performing the procedure, the skill of the person who makes the veneers, insurance and how many of your teeth need veneers. According to John A Garza, D.D.S., of Smiles by Garza, composite bonding is essentially a temporary patch for minor structural issues. For a longer term solution, and in more severe cases--when less than 50% of a tooth will remain--porcelain onlays are the way to go. “An onlay is essentially a glass ‘jigsaw’ piece that is bonded onto the tooth, returning it to 98% of its original strength.”

Reconstruction and Smile Makeovers

Without question, whitening is the most commonly requested cosmetic dentistry procedure out there. Everyone wants a bright white smile, and chemical whitening is the way to get there fast. A huge range of over-the-counter toothpastes, mouthwashes, strips and bleaching trays testify to the popularity of the process. With so many products out there, is it necessary to go professional? It is if speed is a concern. “Some people may see decent results with the over-the-counter whitening systems,” says Scott Harris, D.D.S., of Harris Dental. However, “to get those results, people end up spending a lot of time and a small fortune on the over-the-counter products when they can get very dramatic results in a short amount of time using more effective whitening systems. Inoffice whitening treatments provide instant, dramatic results, which is what many patients prefer.” With professional in-office whitening, you can expect to get up to five shades whiter in just one sitting. The high-concentration peroxide used by professionals is very strong, so it can make a large difference in a short period of time. (A word of caution: this strong concentration can create painful sensitivity, so be sure to discuss your options with your dentist carefully.) If you’re a bit more patient, or just need to maintain an in-office whitening, professional take-home kits are the best way to whiten conveniently at home. “All bleaching procedures will relapse,” says Dr. Robert A. Savage of Savage Smiles, “So we like to use lower concentration take home kits to help our patients maintain their desired shade. We have a system now that does not create sensitivity. It’s new and exciting.”

Veneers

With veneers you get an instantly white and straight smile, as they are designed to fit right over teeth with decay, wide gaps, cracks or similar damage. You generally have the choice between indirect porcelain veneers (also known as inlays or onlays) or direct composite bonding.

58

VALLEY LIFESTYLES magazine | AUGUST 2013

If your dental issues are severe and/or extend beyond the teeth, a more comprehensive approach could be warranted. For multiple dental issues, a smile makeover assesses all your needs and comes up with a plan of attack to effectively address them all. Howie Brauer D.D.S. and Joy Brauer D.D.S of Seville Family Dentistry outline the process as such: “There really isn’t a ‘cookie cutter’ smile makeover. The desired result and current dental condition determines how a patient’s smile makeover will be treated. Treatments can range from simply reshaping some gums and teeth, all the way to using multiple dental professionals to restore teeth with implants, crowns, veneers and braces.” If you have muscular issues, severe bite or bone structure problems, mouth/facial reconstruction will get everything in-line before any other aesthetic improvements can take place. As it deals with issues that affect your health as well as the look of your smile, insurance can cover at least part of full mouth reconstruction. Which is good, as it can run upwards of $45,000 depending on the severity of your condition. Whatever your circumstances, you can be sure that your dentist is just as excited with the final results as you are. According to Dr. Jerry Triolo of Smile in Style, “There is nothing like seeing a person with a new smile. It just changes their personality. Also, the person who gets teeth to allow them to chew again is priceless.”

Orthodontic Trends Back in the day, tooth straightening meant a mouth full of metal. Ugly, painful metal. Unless the situation was dire, teenagers in the 1980s and ‘90s would often settle for a slightly crooked smile if only to forego the prospect of years of braces. These teenagers have grown up, and with

them so have the number of viable options for effective teeth straightening. As such, more adults than ever are deciding better late than never. While certainly still available, metal braces are being joined by orthodontic devices that are more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable (at least as comfortable as they can be forcing the teeth into alignment). Clear braces, commonly known as Invisalign, fit over the teeth and, as the name implies, are virtually invisible. A series of customized aligner trays are changed out every couple of weeks as needed to make corrections over time. Invisalign and now Invisalign Teen meet the teeth straightening and lifestyle needs of adults and teenagers. The average cost is $5000, although some of that can be deferred by insurance. According to Dr. Tyler Robison of Robison Orthodontics, while standard braces are still the best option under pretty much any circumstances, “Invisalign is a fantastic way to straighten your teeth without braces and wires.” However, as they’re so easily removable, there can be issues with compliance. “They don’t work for everyone--you must be committed to wearing them day and night.”

Tooth-colored braces combine the effectiveness of metal braces with a more subtle look. These have the same essential style of metal braces, but instead use clear or tooth-colored brackets made of plastic or ceramic. These brackets are less noticeable and more comfortable than metal, but can chip and/or stain if not cared for properly. Ceramic in particular can be somewhat difficult to remove without damaging tooth enamel. However, another option, clear sapphire brackets, are strong and won’t stain. Another way to keep braces hidden is to not wear them on the front of the teeth. Lingual braces are metal braces attached to the interior of the teeth. While invisible, lingual braces can be expensive and irritate the tongue. They also often require longer treatment time. Not all devices are alike, nor are all teeth straightening needs alike. So keep in mind that while an orthodontic device may sound good, you’ll need to make sure that it will be effective in correcting your specific condition. Your orthodontist will determine the best course of action.

FAQs Dental CareBy the Numbers In a 2012 survey conducted by the American Dental Association, it was found that a large percentage of people are misinformed as to recommended dental care. Out of 1500 respondents: •

65% believe they should replace their toothbrush just twice a year, when the ADA recommends every three months.

75% don’t know when to take their child to the dentist for the first time. The ADA recommends within six months after the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday, whichever comes first.

60

90% mistakenly believe they should brush after every meal, when the ADA recommends only twice a day.

81% think that sugar causes cavities. But it’s really germs in the mouth that do. These germs feed on sugar and then produce acid that attacks and weakens tooth enamel, over time forming a cavity. 59% don’t realize that cavity-causing germs can be contagious.

VALLEY LIFESTYLES magazine | AUGUST 2013

Regardless of whether you need to whiten or straighten, or are perfectly happy with your smile, one thing is always the same: you need to take care of your teeth to keep them looking their best. The following questions address common issues in regards to dental hygiene and maintenance, and the best ways to keep your smile beautiful and healthy.

Q. How old should my child be for their first dental appointment?

A.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first visit by the age of 12-18 months. The purpose of the visit is to inspect an incomplete set of primary teeth for any predisposing factors to decay. -Dr. John Culp, Jungle Roots Children’s Dentistry

Q. When should braces be first considered?

A.

Most children could benefit from braces once all the baby teeth come out at age 11-13. Some need to have earlier treatment around age 7-9 for bite issues, habit cessation or severe crowding. -Dr. Robison, Robison Orthodontics

Q. Brushing and flossing: How often? What are the best products? The most effective cleaning techniques? A. Brush a minimum of two times a day: focus should be at the gun-line area of the tooth, and not for a minute or 90 seconds, but for as long as it takes to confirm that indeed the tooth is free of plaque. Floss once a day; nighttime is best because after brushing and flossing, the child’s teeth will stay cleaner, longer. Use any fluoridated toothpaste (fluoride is the active ingredient by which enamel is fortified and re-mineralized). -Dr. Culp, Jungle Roots Children’s Dentistry

A.

A soft bristled tooth brush will help minimize the erosion of your enamel and reduce sensitivity. Also, an electric tooth brush is much more efficient than a manual one. -Dr. Harris, Harris Dental

Q. Do mouthwashes and toothpastes that promote enamel restoration really work?

A.

Restorative mouthwashes toothpastes will not actually add material to your teeth, but they will things that soften teeth like acids

and new stop and

harden the teeth. These products prove to be important for people who have a lot of acid in their diets or problems with reflux. Most drinks besides water are loaded with added acids for flavor. These are the most damaging ingredients in our diets today when it comes to teeth. -Drs. Brauer, Seville Family Dentistry

Q. If I take care of my teeth properly at home, how often are professional cleanings really needed? A. It depends. For adults, reassessment of potential periodontal disease is a must. Residual, impossible to remove at-home accretions (tartar) should be removed at least two times a year (sometimes more). For kids, we clean residual plaque, stain and sometimes tartar two times per year because they typically have material to clean at that prescribed interval. -Dr. Culp, Jungle Roots Children’s Dentistry

Cantina Laredo

Catering to your taste buds By Lindsey Rodrian I PHOTOS SARAH BEL GRAY

If you find yourself craving some gourmet Mexican food, Cantina Laredo is your spot. Located in the heart of SanTan Village, the welcoming atmosphere and horseshoe bar will cater to your taste buds, and your thirst for a great margarita. “When most people think of Mexican food, they rarely think gluten free,” explained Mickey Foster, the General Manager. And, it’s true. But, anyone with gluten restrictions or a vegetarian diet will be pleased with the variety of tasty options including Enchiladas de Avocado, Tacos de Pescado and Enchilada de Espinaca. So, let’s start with a drink! All Cantina Laredo margaritas are made with fresh squeezed lemon and lime, and they are hard to pass up. Get the girlfriends together on a Thursday night and enjoy half-priced house margaritas. Or, go for a colorful mojito or authentic cervesa. Cantina Laredo even offers Cabotella, a hard to find, Mexican craft beer brewed in Cabo San Lucas. VALLEY LIFESTYLES magazine | AUGUST 2013

Now, on to appetizers. Following in the gluten free fashion, is their signature top shelf guacamole, made table side. This fresh guacamole serves two to four and is bursting with flavors of fresh cilantro, onion, garlic and tomato. Another amazing appetizer sure to satisfy is the new Botanas Trio. This is the perfect opportunity to taste their seafood, which is flown in fresh daily. Ahi Tuna Tacos, Crab Cakes, and Poblano and Chicken Empanada’s decorate this lovely dish and satisfy any sea food lover’s craving. Whether you are looking for another appetizer, or moving on to your main dish, the Tacos de Pescado is an excellent choice. Fresh Mahi Mahi, queso fresco and marinated vegetables, all topped with a chipotle aioli, make this dish one flavorful experience. This is no average taco, that’s for sure. Carnitas, Carne Asada, Fajitas and Tampico are just a few entrée options available when visiting Cantina Laredo. If you find yourself torn between a few of these yummy dishes, here is a suggestion: The Cameron 74

Poblano Asada- a sight and taste to behold. After ordering, you will be served a dish holding a savory, perfectly grilled steak wrapping a poblano pepper, oozing with shrimp, mushrooms, onions and monterey jack cheese. By this time you’re surely salivating, so let’s talk desserts. Mexican Apple Pie, presented at the table on a sizzling hot plate, smells as amazing as it tastes. Dressed in a Brandy butter and topped with cinnamon ice cream, this dessert will leave everyone at the table eyeing the last bite. When you’re sharing dessert you have to get two… right? The Mango Tres Leches is yet another pretty and tasty dish available at Cantina Laredo. This creamy vanilla cake stacked between layers of mango cream sauce is just heavenly. Need a new breakfast spot? Sunday Brunch, served in a traditional Mexican style, includes favorites like Crab Cake Benedict, Ravos Rancheros Omelets, and a free Bloody Maria (a Bloody Mary, made with tequila)

with a brunch item purchase. What more could you ask for? Offered every Sunday from 11AM-3PM, this seems like an appropriate Sunday tradition. IN SEASON

Jalapeños By Michele Bird

If you’re looking for that perfect hint of spice this summer, jalapeños are a must-have ingredient. Originating in Mexico, jalapeños are commonly recognized for their green color and spicy taste. When jalapeños are fully ripened, they lose their green color and start sporting a shade of red with a bit of a sweeter flavor. There are many ways you can prepare jalapeños and you may notice how the spiciness differs from each take. Depending on the dish you are cooking up, jalapeños can be served raw, pickled, sautéed, roasted, and baked. Recipe possibilities are endless and jalapeños can be

76

VALLEY LIFESTYLES magazine | AUGUST 2013

included in almost any type of cuisine. Jalapeños are available year-round and offer a great source of vitamins with a low amount of calories, making this pepper an excellent addition to any meal. Jalapeños are ideal to add a little bit of kick into a variety of dips such as salsa or hummus, which can be deliciously paired with tortilla or pita chips. Not to mention, chopped up and sliced jalapeños are perfect to throw in with fajitas, tacos, and quesadillas! During the preparation process, it helps to be wearing latex or plastic gloves as you cut up the spicy pepper. Be sure to take extra

care to not come into contact with your eyes when handling jalapeños to avoid any irritation or burning. For those who want to quench their thirst with a fiery drink this season, try out a jalapeño cocktail or margarita. Jalapeños are versatile and can become your go-to ingredient in any recipe of your choosing with drinks included. Don’t shy away from jalapeños if you’re not a fan of spice. You might just find that the jalapeño accent will get your taste buds jumping in the best way possible.

Mango Jalapeño Margaritas (Makes one margarita)

2 ounces Grand Marnier 1 1/2 ounces jalapeño tequila 2 ounces lime juice 2 1/2 ounces mango simple syrup 1/2 mango, peeled and chopped 2 jalapeño peppers, sliced salt for the rim lime wedges Directions:

For jalapeño tequila: add 2 sliced jalapeños to a large jar or container and cover with 1 1/2 cups of tequila. Let sit for 24 hours, then strain before using. Keep in a sealed container for a few weeks, preferably in the fridge. For mango simple syrup: combine equal parts sugar and water (I suggest 1 cup of each), bring to a boil and let sugar dissolve, then turn off heat and let cool completely. Combine 1 cup simple syrup + 1/2 mango (peeled and cubed) in a blender and blend until combined. To make the margaritas, rim the ridge of your glass with a lime wedge and dip in margarita salt. Fill the glass with ice. In a cocktail shaker, combine tequila, grand marnier, simple syrup and lime juice with ice, and shake for about 30 seconds. Pour over ice and squeeze in lime slices. I also took a few of the jalapeños from the tequila and removed the seeds, then toss them in the margarita.

Sweet Corn & Roasted Jalapeño Hummus (Makes about one cup)

2 medium jalapenos 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed (and peeled if you have patience) 1/2 cup sweet yellow corn 3-4 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper Directions:

To roast the jalapenos, preheat the broiler in your oven and place peppers on a baking sheet. Broil on all sides, flipping once charred. Remove and let cool completely. Additionally, you can grill or even “roast” the peppers on your gas stove (um, I did this) – whatever is easiest for you! Once cooled, chop of the tops and slice the peppers down the middle, remove the seeds and chop. Add chickpeas, corn and peppers to the food processor. Blend until combined, then slowly stream in olive oil with the processor running. Add in salt and pepper, then blend once more. Taste and season more if desired. Top with additional corn or peppers if desired and a drizzle of olive oil. Serve with crackers and chips! Photos and recipes courtesy of howsweeteats.com

FINAL THOUGHTS

By Kelly Pollard

Back to School

Daze

82

VALLEY LIFESTYLES magazine | AUGUST 2013

Is it me, or does it seem wrong and slightly cruel to shove the kids back off to school in August? The shift has been gradual, as to when that first day of school pops up on the calendar. Growing up, I didn’t have to report to class until after Labor Day. Now I’m left grappling with how to shop for school clothes when it’s too hot for anything but flip-flops and bathing suits.

My sons have never known anything different than today’s reality, though I admit I’m still resistant even though my oldest is starting fifth grade this year and I should be hip to this routine by now. August finds me comfortably settled into summertime mode with barbecues late into the evening, sleeping in through the morning news, and skipping showers in favor of trips to the pool or closest lake. Our house seems to have absorbed that chlorine odor into its walls as we wage battle with triple digit heat by floating in overinflated tubes or sit catatonic under misters in the blazing sun.   The experts advise parents to gradually shift kids into a regular sleep schedule the weeks leading up to school. What, you mean my sons can’t stay up until midnight waging battles against video game zombies in mid-July? They were just getting warmed up. I always have the best intentions. I’ve even been known to switch all the clocks to an hour ahead to trick them. Unfortunately for me, as they have acquired more electronic gizmos, the Xbox or Kindles never lie about the time.   School daze in August means soaking my kids in sunscreen so they can survive their two recesses. It is packing two bottles of frozen

water to aide them through PE and soccer games under the angry sun. It means my aging minivan overheating in the pick-up line that snakes through the parking lot after school. Back to school shopping means shifting the swim trunks out of the way in favor of gym shorts, because jeans are simply too heavy for the weather forecast.   I admit the other dirty truth: that by August my sons are at each other’s throats and I’m ready to ship them off to boot camp, and to get them to stop eating all the food in my house. I swear, does the heat make these guys hungrier? My fridge and pantry are in constant states of depletion. So an August start certainly has an appeal, though the homework routine is bumpy until after Labor Day. How can they focus on math while battling slight heatstroke?    So I will warn our new teachers now that my kids will be those sunburnt, sleep-deprived zombies dragging their sandaled feet across the blacktop on the first day of school. I’ll do my best to hide the straps of my bathing suit under my tank top so as not to give away my quick escape to the pool while my boys are hard at work at their desks.

You have one life to live, live it well. Jamie’s Story Jaime, age 42, came to Protea Medical Center after suffering for seven years from depression, insomnia, and anxiety. Her symptoms began after giving birth to two children over three years. Since her last pregnancy, Jaime’s menstrual cycles had been irregular. She gained 25 pounds over seven years and had difficulty losing weight. She had lost all sexual desire as well as confidence, and felt that she was in a downward spiral.

Within moments of her consult, the doctor developed a preliminary assessment of Jamie’s condition. As he explained, Jamie’s name could easily be replaced with the names of thousands of

Jaime’s previous physicians made her feel that she was a high maintenance, emotionally inadequate hypochondriac.

Even when she did get a full night’s sleep, Jaime never felt rested or renewed. Jaime had sought the care of two physicians, who both told her she was “depressed with anxiety” and prescribed antidepressants and anxiety medications with sleep aids. At no point did either doctor run labs to check her hormone levels.

“I have not felt this good in years. Thank you for giving me my life back!” A friend of hers, a patient at Protea Medical Center, introduced her to the concept of a natural alternative treatment for her healthcare issues, which could include dietary counseling, bloodwork, hormone evaluation, and nutritional supplements. Encouraged, Jaime came to us for an evaluation.

other women seen in our clinic: women between the ages of 30 and 50 from all walks of life and careers, anxious to restore their well-being. Jaime’s previous physicians made her feel that she was a high maintenance, emotionally inadequate hypochondriac. At Protea, we explained how her symptoms were common to women her age and that she was not alone. Best of all, these symptoms were easily treated. Jaime was experiencing an imbalance in her female hormones that adversely affected her body’s ability to function, leading to insomnia, depression, anxiety and fatigue. Jamie’s hormonal irregularity created a perfect storm of imbalance within her body. After her initial bloodwork returned to the clinic, the doctor set up a customized treatment plan based on her results. He prescribed bioidentical hormones and natural thyroid supplementation, as well as weekly vitamin injections to combat her fatigue.

If Jaime’s story resonates with you, give the experts at Protea Medical Center a call today to schedule a consult. You have one life to live, Live it well. 84

Our nutritionist counseled her to try foods rich in anti-oxidants and vitamins to help restore her vitality. She was put on a personalized diet plan specific to her needs. Within two months, Jaime’s depression and fatigue disappeared. She discontinued her antidepressants, lost ten pounds, and felt energized. She told us, “I have not felt this good in years. Thank you for giving me my life back!”
