I fell in love with Arizona the day I moved here, which happened to be December 24th. I left Pennsylvania wrapped tightly in a bubble coat and a hideous pair of snow boots. That night I enjoyed dinner on my friends’ gorgeous patio while wearing a tank top! Christmas morning was met with a nice breeze and open bay windows. How perfect. Whether it’s the sight of snow falling on cacti, or the many holiday events in perfect temperature, the East Valley’s winter season can’t be beat. EAST VALLEY RESIDENT LIGHTS UP THE STAGE Kelsey Hagan’s infectious personality can ignite a room, while her talents will light up your television screen. At only 18, this East Valley resident is dancing her way across the stage of The X-Factor and instructing your children on Just Dance Kids 2014.

Growing up in Northern California, Kelsey fondly remembers admiring dancers through a studio window. Seeing the sparkle in her daughter’s eye, Kelsey’s mother Lisa enrolled her in her first dance class at age 3. Since then, Kelsey has embraced all aspects of dance, participating in ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap, hip-hop and contemporary, to name a few. VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2013

upfront 480 “I can’t pick a favorite, I just love to dance,” giggles Kelsey. At age 12, Kelsey and her family moved to Gilbert, Arizona. As a home schooled student, she was able to submerge herself in her passion, working with dance studios in the Valley, such as the former Precision Dance Studio, Adaptive Force Performing Arts and CanDance Studios. At 14, Kelsey was teaching classes of her own, competing and attending conventions all over the United States. As her talent matured, she directed her attention to

conventions. “This was my focus,” smiles Kelsey. “It gave me the opportunity to really focus on my technique, while making connections and meeting mentors that have really changed my life.” One of those life-changing moments occurred at a national convention in Los Angeles when Kelsey was only 15. A Los Angeles and New York-based dance agency, Clear Talent Group, held auditions for only one dancer to win representation. “When I was the one chosen, I realized my dream was coming true,” she says.

Clear Talent Group began working with Kelsey following her audition at Co. Dance Conventions. Since then, Kelsey has appeared in the dance apparel magazine, Discount Dance Supply, a Macy’s commercial, and the Macy’s Rising Star Megan & Liz music video, “Bad for Me”. After graduating in June of 2013, a whirlwind of opportunities swept Kelsey into the limelight and in front of the green screen. Catch Kelsey dancing up a storm in the new Just Dance Kids 2014, a popular dance-based video game featuring top songs with choreographed movements. For Ariana Grande’s “Put Your Hearts Up”, and Selena Gomez’s “Magic Carpet”, Kelsey will show you all the right moves for that high score! “It was such an exciting and anticipated project because we had no idea what the game would look like,” explains Kelsey. “We shot the dance a few times, and then there was a six month waiting period.” Her excitement was met when she saw the game’s finished product. “The animation and graphics are so fun!” beams Kelsey. “I mean, I have hearts coming from my hands!” Her recent appearance

on the The X-Factor was yet another amazing opportunity for this local super star. After five days of rehearsals, Kelsey performed two numbers in the opening live show--with Ellona Santiago in “Till the World Ends” and Josh Levi in “Only Girl”. “Performing in a live show was an incredible experience!” explains Kelsey. “I was able to meet the judges, hang out with the contestants and work with a bunch of other amazing people.” Although Kelsey’s career is gaining serious momentum, she is still very active at CanDance Studios in Gilbert. CanDance opened in 2012 and is run by three professional instructors that Kelsey has worked with since she was 14. She feels blessed to call these instructors her mentors. “They all work professionally in the industry and have been so helpful in guiding me through my experience in the commercial side of dance.” Between traveling, gigs and auditions, Kelsey practices three to four days a week and actively teaches ages 2-4 and 5-10 in ballet, jazz, tap and musical theater at CanDance Studios. Kelsey’s passion, drive and super-sweet personality are sure to guide her toward Hollywood, a plan she is currently constructing. Her bright future is as star-studded as her high top sneakers and mesmerizing performances. Be on the look out for this local firecracker!

The Palms Theatre recently re-opened with much fanfare and is presenting Disney’s Sleeping Beauty for the holidays. Early and regular matinees are perfect for younger kids and school groups, while evening performances are convenient for the entire family. A familyfriendly food buffet is included in the cost of the show and boasts a wide variety of foods and deserts. With Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, casting is more of a challenge than directing. The cast is comprised of local adults and children. “It’s 100% locally cast,” says Director Rob Watson. “The kids get training at the children’s theatre and then receive their professional experience with us. They frequently cast children from East Valley Children’s Theatre and Studio 3 Performing Arts. This production will be faithful to the beloved Disney classic film and is perfect for the holidays. In Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, it is Princess Aurora’s 16th birthday, 30

and fairies Flora, Fauna and Merryweather must use their magic to save her from the spell of the evil Sorceress Maleficent. The production includes the dashing Prince Phillip, who ultimately must save the sleeping Princess Aurora. Autograph signing and photo ops with the cast will take place following the show. Rob Watson is the director of “Disney’s Sleeping Beauty”. A gifted theatrical director, Watson was the associate producer at The Palms previous incarnation, Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, where he also starred in the productions “Sound of Music”, “Run for Your Wife” and “The Unsinkable Molly Brown”, among others.

The holidays conventionally suggest entertaining, which can sometimes translate into a distressing burden. This year, ease the angst of entertaining and assemble a crew of your closest couple friends for a progressive dinner. A trendy variant on a potluck dinner, this safari supper divvies up the duty and relieves the pressure of entertaining. Rather than guests bringing food to your home, this is a traveling party where each successive course is eaten at a different host’s house. The guests progress from house to house en masse for each course. Largely popular in the 1950s, progressive dinners declined in the 80s and 90s when disposable income was common and catered affairs were all the rage. Reemerging as a cutting-edge, low-cost entertaining option in today’s economic climate, we’ve got the inside scoop on planning your very own safari-style supper. PICK A STYLE

A progressive dinner is a nice way to share the spirit of the holidays with a group of friends. It can double as a gift exchange, which can be the experience of the dinner itself, or a collective showering of gifts among friends at each host’s house. When taking pencil to paper to plan your progressive meal, decide what kind of event you want to have: a laissez-faire occasion, a family fun feast where kids are king, a formal affair in which dusting off the china is required, a decadent desserts only delight, or a themed cuisine evening (Italian, Mexican, classic comfort food, etc.). GUESTS COME NEXT

Determining your fellow hosts will in large part be based on the chosen 32

direction of your progressive dinner party. Let’s face it – we all have situation-specific friends that we love dearly for the niche in which they fulfill. We have our kid-friendly couples, our let’s get our party on cohorts, our dinner and a movie companions, our…well, you get the idea. It’s important to consider cohosts that fit the focus of your dinner. Typically, 3-5 hosts work best. Hire a designated driver to move everyone from house to house if need be. Collectively compile a guest list of folks to invite. MENU MUSTS

A traditional layout looks like this: Host 1 serves hors d’ oeuvres and perhaps a signature cocktail. Host 2 serves a first course of soup or salad. Host 3 serves the main course with sides, perhaps paired with wine. Host 4 serves dessert, or perhaps a tasting menu of a variety of desserts. Host 5 offers an array of after-dinner drinks and specialty coffees or espresso. Consider the talents, preferences, and home layout of each host when designating courses. STICK TO A SCHEDULE

Schedule the stops and stick to it. Allow a 10-minute “head start” for the succeeding hosts to depart the current host’s house. Hosts should pre-set tables and have décor in full glory prior to the start of the evening, and most importantly, make their courses ahead of time leaving only finishing touches upon arrival. Remember, progressives are about movement and participation with the focus on friends, food, and fun, so get creative with your crew and come up with unique ways to spice up the night.

Change, obstacles, uncertainties, speed bumps, discomfort, busyness, laziness, and self-sabotage are all things that can consume us at some point in time, but how will you respond? Ultimately, the choice is yours. When you think about finishing strong, nothing else matters. If you are in the 4th quarter of a game, what happened in the 1st quarter cannot be controlled, but what can be controlled is that very next play. The same holds true during our yearly games of life. This December is your 4th quarter. As a matter of fact, it is your 2-minute warning before another beautiful year begins. What choices are you going to make regarding your food intake? What changes are you going to implement to your fitness regime? What relationship are you going to strengthen? Who are you going to reach out to and help this month? Don’t wait until next year to get going. Stay focused on this year, this month, this day, and achieve a goal or feat – no matter how big or small – that means something to you before January arrives. The momentum you build and the confidence you gain as you finish this year strong will carry you right into a successful January. Put all of your efforts and focus into NOW, and you will reap the benefits in the future. Choose to push yourself to the next level. Choose to overcome the obstacles you’ve faced this year. BRETT SAKS FOUNDATION BY JESSICA RUDOLPH

In October 2008, Kim Saks lost her husband, Brett, when he was struck by a driver under the influence of sleeping pills while cycling on Highway 87. To celebrate Brett, a former chiropractor and avid cyclist, she founded the 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, the Brett Saks Foundation, in 2011. Her mission is to combine her love of teaching with Brett’s love of cycling and educate communities about bike safety and awareness.” Kim describes her husband as determined, hardworking, funny and passionate. At the time of his passing, he was working on creating his own charity bike ride. Brett’s inspiration † Brett Saks began in 2007 when he was one of 100 riders in the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge, a 600-mile charity bike ride from San Francisco to San Diego. Brett shared plans of his charity ride that included an abstract, stick figure drawing of a cyclist, and with the addition of a helmet and gear, it has become the foundation’s logo. A helmet was added to signify the need for bicycle safety education and the gear is influential in giving a visual representation of the foundation’s goal to “GEAR UP”: • Give support to programs that promote cycling safety • Educate the public, with emphasis on youth, about bicycling safety • Advocate for respect between cyclists and drivers • Reach out to families who have been impacted by a similar loss • Uplift the community by being good stewards of the environment • Perpetuate Brett’s legacy of supporting disabled cyclist programs Tragically, each year over 600 people lose their lives to bike and car related accidents. The Brett Saks Foundation wants to reduce this number by educating both car drivers and bike riders through various avenues, including the Junior Cyclist Program, which is driven by Kim’s talent as an elementary school teacher. It’s her dream to incorporate the lesson into kids 38

programs from scouts to schools. Last month, Banner Children’s anchored the Brett Saks Foundations Bike Land at Chandler’s Day of Play. Once there, the foundation’s treasured sponsors educated the kids with training stations mimicking real life biking situations, helped with minor bike repair and donated 500 bike helmets to attendees. Additionally, the foundation committed to donating 25 percent of the proceeds from the Fit Kids Bike Ride to Chandler Schools. Each spring, the foundation hosts Brett’s Film Fest where the community comes together

to watch one of Brett’s favorite movies while enjoying dinner and family-friendly fun to raise funds, as well as honor Brett’s memory. A portion of the proceeds from the dinner and silent auction are given to the New Song Center for Grieving Children, where Kim and her son found support after they lost Brett. When the family gets together during these holidays, make a plan.

NOW WHAT?

When I first launched my practice I asked my wife (a nonlawyer) what came to her mind when I said, “Estate Plan.” She responded by singing Good Charlotte’s ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous’. The fact is, she’s not alone. Most of us tend to picture some variation of the 1-percenter lifestyle. And since we are not among the 1-percent, we steer clear telling ourselves, “That’s not me. I don’t need one of those.” But, you do. The classic “Estate Planning” spiel usually includes some hardhitting questions like, “What if I died today?” So, what motivates people to take time out of their schedule to meet with an attorney, planning for something they don’t want to think about? The shortest answer for most people is, they don’t. An “Estate” just means what you own. Everything you own. Including children (shhh, don’t tell them I said that they are your property.) The extent of most people’s estate usually is a house, a couple of cars, a checking and savings account, and maybe some money in a 401k, a life insurance policy, and minor children. Ask yourself, would you want the State deciding what happens with any one of those things? Typically in a 401k or Life Insurance situation you’ll designate a beneficiary yourself (and if you designated the State as your beneficiary, this article

is clearly not for you). Your home, bank accounts, and personal property, and your children are different; without any direction from you, the State will determine who gets it, him, her, or them. For the parents of minor children, this is (or should be) a scary thought. But this article is also not about throwing around a slew of tired out scare tactics. The fact is, we love our children. Thinking about not being there to raise them is unpleasant. But, putting a plan in place to determine where they should go in the event of that type of tragedy is one of the best ways to say, “I love you” when you may not be able to actually say it. For middle-aged people whose children are now leaving faster than you ever thought they could or would, you are probably entering the world of mostly-healthy. In a phrase, your mortality is starting to become a reality. You’re no longer invincible, and the clock will not unwind. I’ll spare you the statistics, but its time to begin thinking about what once seemed impossible and make a plan. For the twilighters, you have undoubtedly seen throughout your life the effects of good and bad (or no) planning. Even though it is not a welcome thought, a plan can ease anxiety (both for you and your children) and assure that you are taken care of in the manner you want to be. Even though it may be your children who will carry out

the plan, it is far better to provide some guidelines than to leave it completely up to them. As we near the holiday season, our thoughts turn to family, food, and (not to sound too corny) peace on earth and good will to men. Consider what your motivation is to put a plan in place. Whether it is to protect yourself, your stuff, or your children, a solid plan will usually address all three and help to make this holiday season the most peaceful one yet.

WALT’S JEWELERS Sam Odom grew up in the world of jewelry. In 1956, his father Walt established Walt’s Jewelers (then known as Walt’s Jewel Box) in Mammoth, Arizona. Sam spent his younger years sweeping and maintaining the new family business. At age 12, his responsibilities changed. “One day my father told me to stop by the shop after school,” Sam explains. There waiting for him was a box and book. “My father said, ‘This is your new job. Read your book, and learn how to engrave.’”

Throughout high school and college, Sam was active in the business until he purchased it from his father in the mid-70s. “I fell in love,” Sam smiles. His many years of tending to the shop, engraving and learning about stones, cuts and styles are evident through his passion for his family’s business. “As I moved on into jewelry repair and custom designing, I was absolutely intrigued with how you could take a small amount of gold and a few gem stones and create a thing of beauty,” Sam says. Walt’s Jewelers, one of Arizona’s original jewelry stores, made the move to the East Valley in the mid-80s. Now, located on the SE corner of Gilbert & Germann Road, Valley residents can enjoy the uniqueness of this shop. Specializing in custom pieces, Walt’s can create a piece you’ve dreamt of or collaborate with a family heirloom to create something gorgeous and sentimental. Sam and his wife Melissa admit the move was like starting over. Sam possessed the knowledge and talent to make and repair jewelry, but it was Melissa who held the knowledge and talent to run a successful business. Sam is grateful for the team that they create together. “Operating a business has not always been the cakewalk that a lot of people think, but it’s a whole lot easier when your business partner, your best friend, and your wife are all the same person,” Sam says. Holiday Wonderland CELEBRATES 56 YEARS IN THE VALLEY BY MARLENE MONTANEZ

Everything has its humble beginnings. And for the 67-year-old volunteer organization, Desert Club (one of the oldest womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s volunteer organizations in the Valley), it all started with the simple goal of service and giving back.

When the Desert Club began, members raised money for scholarships and charities through rummage sales and cooking dinner for the Mesa Rotary Club on Wednesday nights. Then in 1958, they came up with a new idea for a fundraiser, the Christmas Idea House. The women offered a home tour where people could come shop for holiday goods to decorate their own houses in the Valley. Hand-stitched quilts, wreaths and even decor made from empty tuna cans and yardsticks were just some of the modest items available for purchase. The first event was a total success, raising about $700. Now, the annual Christmas Idea House is in its 56th year, bringing in thousands of visitors every year. Thus far, the organization has raised more than $2 million to date. “We decorate the house with items we have purchased or made,” explains Debby Doyle, Desert Club’s 2013 president. “For example, if we buy a glass ornament, we don’t sell it as-is-we decorate it or change it or enhance it in some way. We try to customize it so you can’t buy it anywhere else. We’ll paint it, tie ribbons, add pretty hooks, and change it in some way.” Desert Club has 40 members involved in the Christmas Idea House, as well as several “lifetime” members who come together to help put on the annual fundraiser. There are handmade quilts, aprons, baby clothes, rocking chairs, several Christmas trees, tree skirts, ornaments and holiday decorations galore throughout the house. The women break out into committees, and each committee is responsible for decorating one room in the house. It’s a process that takes an entire year to plan, with the women going to market as soon as January to purchase wholesale items for the year to come. “Not only do we have to make all the items for the room, but we also decorate the house. We start the Monday after Thanksgiving and have to have it done by Tuesday night. We work from 8 a.m. to midnight Monday and Tuesday nights decorating the house,” Doyle says. Each year, an East Valley family volunteers their home for the Christmas Idea House, moving out so that Desert Club can decorate and host the multi-day event. The homes are typically a minimum of 5,000 square feet and have very unique features. This year’s home, donated by the Check family, is a sprawling 9,000 square foot custom home in the exclusive Whitewing community at Germann Estates of Gilbert. It has a shooting gallery in the basement, a turntable in the garage, curved interior

walls and other unique features. The entire home will be outfitted top to bottom with holiday decor and available for public tours and shopping on December 6 and 7, with a gala preview event happening on December 5. All of the proceeds raised from Christmas Idea House benefit local charities and Desert Club’s scholarship fund. “We split the money, so if we earn $60,000 in profits this year, $30,000 goes toward scholarships and $30,000 goes to other local community charities,” Doyle explains. Save the Family, the Child Crisis Center and local food banks are just some of the organizations that have benefitted in the past. “It’s not just the home tours and unique gifts, it’s what it stands for,” Doyle says, who first visited the Christmas Idea House in 1989 and made it an annual family tradition ever since. Athena’s Window Fashions BEAUTIFYING HOMES SINCE 1983 Before she fell in love with John, Athena fell in love with fabrics and sewing. She worked at a local drapery shop between classes at Mesa Community College. As a newlywed, two themes began to describe her life: family and creating beautiful window coverings. As the Hatch family grew to include five children, Athena continued to create custom draperies for her family and friends. Her husband John was an electrician and they decided to combine talents. Athena’s Window Fashions opened for business in 1983, with Athena at the sewing machine and John building cornice boxes and headboards while honing his skills in blind repair and installation. 30 years later, family is still the priority for the couple. “We enjoy creating rooms where families can gather and spend quality time together,” Athena says. They offer the latest designs in draperies, blinds and shutters and create custom bedding, pillows and cushions to compliment the style of an interior or exterior living space. “Since we are custom designers, there is no limit to what we can create,” she adds. This custom 78

service makes the company unique since few Valley companies have seamstresses in-house. Everything is sewn at their facility in Gilbert and customers are welcome to browse online, in-person, or Athena’s can visit your home to provide style, color and design inspiration. There are more basic side panels and grommets on iron rods, rather than fluff.” Athena explained. The trend is getting away from heavier looks and trending towards lighter fabrics, such as linen. Perhaps the return to simplicity in window fashion is a reflection of what’s going with families. “In this busy, high-tech age, it’s great to come home to a beautiful and simple home and enjoy quality time with each other,” explains John.

PRESIDENTIAL VISITS

We recently returned from another wonderful trip to the East Coast and had a rather unique agenda. Our goal was to spend ﬁve days in Washington, D.C. visiting as many meaningful historical highlights as possible. And the more iconic museums and renowned memorials we visited, the more we came to realize how truly important a visit to our nation’s capital should be for all Americans. We then embarked next door to northern Virginia to concentrate on visiting the famous estates of four of our most renowned U. S. presidents. The entire visit to D.C. was exceptionally edifying, and each presidential home provided an exceptional look into our country’s history. Nowhere in the U.S. can you visit so many glorious presidential estates, all within close proximity to D.C.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN D.C.:

As in past visits, we decided to do without a car for the first few days since it’s an enjoyable walking city. And, once again, it was a smart choice! Parking can be expensive and sometimes difficult to find in D.C. And if your destination is too far to walk to their local transportation system is one of the East Coast’s best. Good news for folks on a budget: there are no admission fees at the must-see National Zoo, the multitude of amazing Smithsonian Museums, National Monuments and many other federally owned attractions. Of course, as taxpayers we all support these unbelievable facilities and exhibits via our taxes. Be sure to walk the National Mall and the cobblestone streets of the trendy Georgetown area and visit the following: the Lincoln, Washington and Jefferson Memorial Monuments; the War Memorials; Martin Luther King Monument; National Cathedral; and our personal favorite, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. The White House is once again open for a limited number of tours, but if you want to arrange one contact your congress member. Can’t arrange a tour? No problem, as it remains visible enough to recognize its classic architectural beauty from afar. Capitol Hill, home to the Senate, House of Representatives, Supreme Court, Library of Congress and Botanic Garden is a mustsee free tour, but reservations are needed. www.visitthecapitol.gov. For non-walkers, be sure to sign up for the Big Bus open top sightseeing adventure for an on/off tour of most of D.C. and nearby Arlington, Virginia’s iconic landmarks like their National Cemetery featuring the Tomb of the Unknowns and the Changing of the Guard ceremony. Big Bus also offers some bonus admissions to the Crime Museum, Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum and a river cruise. www.bigbustours.com. Need a break from history? One of the funniest nights we’ve experienced in years was attending the long- running play “Capitol Steps” at the Ronald Reagan Building. If you like topical political humor and uncontrollable laughing, don’t miss this show! www.capsteps.com. As professional baseball junkies, we walked a mile or so to watch a thrilling Washington Nationals baseball game in their stunning new waterfront ballpark and recommend the experience to all sports enthusiasts. http:// nationals.mlb.com. Admittedly, hotel rates in D.C. can be on the high side, but we’re fairly certain

you can find lodging that will fit most budgets. And when you consider the many free attractions and no need to rent a car, readers may wish to stay at one of D.C.’s premier hotels. Three four-star hotels that we’ve personally experienced and emphatically recommend are Hotel Monaco, Omni Shoreham and Hyatt Regency. The Monaco, built in 1842, is located downtown and was the former site of D.C.’s original Post Office and later housed the Tariff Commission. It’s better to experience this great property as an elite hotel rather than going there to “pay taxes”. And it certainly had better service than any post office we’ve ever visited. For more info: www.monaco-dc.com. Since 1930, the classic Omni Shoreham has been ideally located near Embassy Row, the Zoo and the National Cathedral. Eleven acres of lushly landscaped grounds give guests a feeling of being at a resort rather than a large metropolitan hotel. The best dining experience we had in D.C. was a delightful dinner at Robert’s, Omni’s critically acclaimed signature restaurant. For detailed info: www. omnihotels.com. Seeking a newer hotel? If so, the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill is a perfect upscale choice with gracious service and deluxe amenities ideally located in the heart of town. For some of D.C.’s best dining options, foodies should head out to historic 8th street, better known as Barrack’s Row-Main Street. We had a memorable Puerto Rican/Cuban dinner at Banana Café and found numerous other restaurants along this bustling and picturesque avenue that tempted our palates. www.barracksrow.org/on-the-row/ restaurants

PRESIDENTIAL ESTATE VISITS: Upon finishing our tour of D.C., we

rented a car and headed next door to Alexandria, Virginia and Mount Vernon. This former plantation of our first president, George Washington, is on the banks of the renowned Potomac River. Of all the presidential estates we visited, Mount Vernon (in our eyes) provided the most awesome and inimitable setting and requires the most time to thoroughly enjoy all it has to offer. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to go into much detail about each of these celebrated presidential residences in such a short article. But we can honestly say that each visit was worth the time and minimal expense to experience. So we encourage our readers to go to all the websites we’ll provide to find complete details about each. Hopefully this article and the websites will pique

Our next destination was Monticello, the magnificent hilltop mansion of our third president, Thomas Jefferson, located in the beautiful city of Charlottesville, Virginia. Everyone should know what Monticello looks like. Just take a peek on the back of one of your nickel coins. Jefferson not only served his country as President, but was the author of our Declaration of Independence. He’s also known as a famous architect (remarkably self taught), and some of his most famous architectural masterpieces are Monticello and the original buildings of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. It’s one of the country’s most beautiful campuses and deserves a separate visit. www.monticello. org. While in Charlottesville, consider a night’s stay at the famous and historic Boars Head Inn. Or, at minimum, stop in for a delightful dining experience in their Old Mill Room and take a tour of this charming property. www.boarsheadinn.com A few kilometers up the hill from Monticello, you’ll find the rather small Ash LawnHighland, the modest home of James Monroe, our 5th U.S. President. Although the Monroe homestead was the most unpretentious we visited, we gained a ton of respect for his humble lifestyle, loyal marital life and unbelievable service to our country. He held more high level government positions, both elected and appointed, over more years than any other past

For many years, the famous DuPont family owned this marvelous property and had added numerous rooms and made countless changes. Millions of dollars were raised to hire the finest artisans to restore the famed domicile back to its notable origins, and the dramatic results and grand setting are definitely worth the visit. www.montpelier.org

STYLE: ZAPPONE’S GIVES GILBERT FLAVOR

A husband and wife with Las Vegas roots are bringing the flavor and service of the Strip’s five- star restaurants to East Valley residents in Gilbert, while educating guests about authentic Italian cuisine. “We live in Gilbert, raised our children in Gilbert and we wanted our establishment to be in Gilbert,” says Dina Zappone, who operates Zappone’s Italian Bistro with husband Salvatore. “Our goal is to combine first-class Italian cuisine with first-class Las Vegas service that satisfies our guests.” The couple met in Las Vegas’ restaurant industry and shared an interest for food and Italian heritage, as both Dina and Salvatore’s parents are from Italy.

“We try to step out of the box; because of our authentic Italian roots, we feel a real responsibility to educate our guests,” she imparts. “We are not just another Italian restaurant, and we are proud of that. We have a buzz from our guests telling their friends and their family, so we have to live up to their expectations.” And they do! Zappone’s welcoming and warm environment make a great first impression, while the food and service steals hearts. It’s refreshing to see a smiling Dina greet guests by name, while Sal makes specialty items to cater to his ever-faithful customers. The Zappones may have met as employees at the Mirage, but now as business owners in Gilbert their top priority is customer satisfaction at their own establishment. This transition is natural to both as the couple ran a restaurant in Utah before moving to Las Vegas, named Bruno’s Italian Deli after Dina’s side of the family. Part of the Zappone’s Italian Bistro experience is the fun and unique tasting and cooking events they host regularly throughout the year. This includes a monthly cooking class, ‘Chef Offs’ and casual wine dinner packages on Wednesdays and other holidays. “We offer a three-course meal and three wine pairings, all for only 30 dollars,” says Dina. “We

think it is one of the great dining deals in the valley. It is a natural fit for a date too.” No matter if you are on a first date or an anniversary dinner, the menu at Zappone’s amplifies the restaurant’s ambiance by surpassing the expectations of their guests. The menu is highlighted with fresh items cooked from scratch, from appetizers and sandwiches to entrees and desserts. “Our homemade spinach ravioli, veal with pasta sheets and lasagna are all crowd-pleasers,” Dina boasts. “When we have catering clients, that same authentic taste can still be found with our simpler menu items like sandwiches and salads.” Menu items featuring dough use Dina’s father’s 50-year-old recipes. Salvatore’s side of the family is also represented with several of his mother’s recipes, including the homemade lasagna and the tuna and ricotta fritters. “His Italian influence and my Sicilian heritage both shine through the menu, and restaurant,” Dina shares. As if the homemade entrees weren’t enough, the deliciousness of the dessert menu hits guests instantly in their sweet tooth. Made from scratch, the cannoli and cranberry and orange-flavored cheesecakes are the most popular items. A white sponge cake, mini croissants and an almond custard cream are other

popular, unique features on the dessert menu. “Our guests get so excited because we offer so many selections that they have never seen or are hard to find,” says Dina. For both Dina and Salvatore, it is important that Gilbert residents have a unique dining location in their neighborhood that they can call their own, without having to travel to Chandler or Scottsdale. With a seating capacity of 90, large groups receive the same intimate dining experience and attentive customer service as individuals and small groups. “The Vegas-level of customer service is quite refreshing to our guests,” Dina says. “It is all about listening and providing the proper insight for our guests. This sets the stage for the experience of our menu items.” It is an experience that is also enhanced by a 50 percent discount off wines on Tuesdays. The selection includes wine from Italy, California and Washing-

ton. “We truly have fun educating our guests on Italian food and wine,” she concludes. “We enjoy watching our guests come in and try new things. Our entrée specials always sell out because our guests trust our innovation and our ingredients. That is what is important.”

‘Tis the season for all things peppermint! From delicious desserts to soothing drinks, peppermint isn’t just found in the traditional red and white candy cane anymore. It is available as both oil and leaves, which creates an endless amount of options for use. One of the medicinal benefits of peppermint tea is alleviating stomach pains that often come after enjoying a hearty meal. The holidays are typically filled with frequent dinner parties, so hot peppermint tea could be a good

post-meal idea. Peppermint can also add a kick to your hot chocolate, mochas, smoothies, and more! Depending on your taste, peppermint can be thrown into just about any drink for a small burst of freshness. Another popular avenue where peppermint can come into play is dessert. Those who have both a sweet tooth and value fresh breath are sure to enjoy the wide variety of recipes that highlight peppermint as a key ingredient. A few sugary ideas that are worth checking out

include bark, ice cream, taffy, fudge, and brownies. By the looks of it, peppermint seems to be one of the most popular ingredients to grace the holiday season. If you’re not ready to take a walk on the minty side, you can always enjoy the traditional uses of peppermint in gum, candy or toothpaste. Whether you’re a longtime or new fan of this eclectic ingredient, there’s one thing we can all agree on: fresh breath is guaranteed after any peppermint treat!

PEPPERMINT PATTIE BROWNIES INGREDIENTS:

2 cups powdered sugar | 1 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 3 tablespoons evaporated milk | 1/4 teaspoon vegetable oil 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract | 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract GANACHE

3.5 ounces dark chocolate, chopped | 2.5 tablespoons heavy cream DIRECTIONS:

1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour | 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 teaspoons baking soda | 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 sticks (12 tablespoons) of unsalted butter, melted and cooled 1 cup loosely brown sugar | 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 egg + 1 egg yolk, at room temperature | 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup dark chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8x8 baking pan with butter or nonstick spray. In a large bowl, combine melted butter with sugar and vanilla extract, whisking until combined and almost smooth. Whisk in each egg one at a time, stirring until a smooth batter forms. Add in flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt, stirring until combined. Fold in chocolate chips. Spread batter in the 8x8 baking dish and bake for 25-30 minutes until set. Remove and let cool. While brownies are cooling, add powdered sugar, butter, milk, vegetable oil, vanilla and peppermint extracts to the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat until smooth and creamy. Pour over brownies and spread in an even layer with a spoon or spatula. Place in the refrigerator until set, about 30 minutes. To make ganache, heat heavy cream until warm and pour it over chopped chocolate. Stir for a few minutes until totally combined, smooth and creamy. Spread over the top of the peppermint layer or cut brownies first and spoon over top. (Serving size: about 9-12 brownies)

3.5 ounces dark chocolate, chopped | 2.5 tablespoons heavy cream DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix the flour, cocoa, salt and baking soda in a bowl and set aside. In another bowl, mix the cooled butter and sugars until they are combined. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla and stir until mixed. Gradually add in dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it will look crumbly at first, but it will come together. I even used my hands to help at one point. Fold in chocolate chunks. Roll dough into 1-1 1/2-inch balls and place on a nonstick baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the middles are just set. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t over bake! Let cool completely. While cookies are cooling, add powdered sugar, butter, milk, vegetable oil, vanilla and peppermint extracts to the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat until smooth and creamy. Use a spatula and spread the peppermint cream over the top of each cookie evenly. (Serving size: about 20 cookies)

The Tempe Festival of the Arts was ranked among the top 200 art festivals in the nation by Sunshine Art Magazine. I love to shop. One would think the holiday season and all the additional shopping needs would have me embracing the opportunity to hit the mall for a few hours, not the case. I backed out of taking my sons to the dreaded mall Santa far earlier than may have been legal in mommy bylaws. I protest Black Friday and comfort myself with leftover Thanksgiving turkey. I’ve only been driven to wait in one of those wind-around-thestore lines once for the season’s hottest toy, and that was back when the Nintendo Wii was the new gadget on the block. Perhaps I’m traumatized from my college job as a photographer at one of those studios in the main breezeway of Any Mall America. When hired, my boss informed me that the sales between Halloween and Christmas Day accounted for 80 percent of the store’s income for the year. We stacked appointments every twenty minutes, and our lobby swelled with cranky parents and even crankier kids in stiff Christmas finery. If a customer dashed in a few minutes late; if the baby spit up on his Santa suit; if the toddler woke up screaming and puffy from her interrupted nap – the show had to go on. Then, if the poor family managed to survive the whirlwind photo shoot, they had to roam the crowded mall for the next hour while I prayed for decent pictures to avoid the wrath of the sleep-deprived parents, who would return an hour later to have me pressure them into buying multiple sets of poses. You can imagine the Christmas joy. My parents have had to go without Christmas portraits of my sons after we had our own fiasco on the other side of the lens. I was the frazzled, manic mother desperate for the perfect picture. I was the frantic customer who showed up 15 minutes late for her 20-minute appointment, leaving in a rage when they refused to take my baby’s photo because three families were booked behind us. 106

So no, I won’t be shopping at the mall. There is no gift worth enduring the road rage in the parking lot, the blatant line cutting, or the strollers running me off the walkways. I will be shopping in my wine pants (aka pajamas) and clicking on all the websites that have free shipping. I will compile photo calendars from the comfort of my couch while my fellow parents man the front lines at the mall. When

I wake up in a daze the week before Christmas with a tower of Fed Ex boxes on my porch, I will open yet another bottle of wine to wrap up the holiday cheer. You’d think with all the time I’m saving on shopping wars and parking lot confrontations, I’d be dialed in with the other tasks of the holiday season. Oh boy. Don’t get me started on Christmas cards…
