editor's letter

I

tend to start my New Year without a list of resolutions. Instead I find myself looking to all I am blessed with and reminiscing on the delights of the past year. Three hundred and sixty-five days seem to pass before my eyes in a whirlwind of slow-motion moments. As the clock counts down, and my phone rings with texts reading “Happy New Year, Make this the best one yet!” I smile at the positivity and possibility of what’s to come.

A rigid or even condescending mental list of resolutions can seem un-inspiring (check out our slightly more enlightening list of 22 ways to bring out your inner artist, tone your body and put a smile on your face). Don’t strive for perfection, but search for the perfect you. The perfect you doesn’t necessarily mean a 10-pound lighter you or a wealthier you. Passion and happiness promote health and success. So, instead of re-creating the ever-classic and often-failing “Go to the gym everyday” resolution, look deeper into what makes you tick, inspires you and leaves you wanting more.

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist.” - Oscar Wilde

While working on this issue, I had the pleasure of speaking with a local life coach. She told one particular story that resonated with me. While she was participating in a workshop, a man spoke, explaining: “Every new second is a blank piece of paper in front of you. Our thoughts are how we live. If you have a clear sheet of paper and you bring your past into it, it’s a black piece of paper.” So, in celebration of another year, embrace your blank page. Take that trip you’ve been dreaming of, treat yourself to an out-of-this-world spa experience, enrich your life by helping others; do things! As a lifestyle magazine, we’re here to assist you in your exploration, education and (of course) lifestyle. Thank you for ending and beginning your year with us. I will leave you with a passage from award-winning author Neil Gaiman that sums up my hope for all of us this year: I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something. So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever. Happy New Year!

DESERT SAGE HERBS A local mother-daughter duo celebrates 15 years of nurturing souls.

The benefits of herbal medicine, consumed in the form of tea, date back thousands of years. As one of the oldest forms of medicine, herbs can treat anything from a minor sleep disorder to a life-threatening injury. Desert Sage owners Vicki Greener and daughter Brittney Sounart respect the power of holistic care. As a mother, Vicki felt it was her responsibility to protect her children from harmful, sugary ingredients, and promote conscious, healthy lifestyle choices. While Vicki was teaching parenting classes for the community college, she dug deeply into the effects of sugar on one’s diet. “I noticed a difference in my daughters’ behaviors when they had too much sugar, so it became something only for special occasions,” says Vicki.

Natural Products Venue in California to view all of the amazing products available to them. “We also traveled outside of our area to speak with other store owners about their experience in this business,” says Vicki. Brittney and Vicki honed in on their vision: to provide people with an environment in which to nourish their souls and bodies. Desert Sage Herbs found its beginning at the corner of Ray and Rural. However, the rented space constricted their creativity, and the ladies yearned to find a spot that fit their vision. Luckily, in 2004, a real estate friend introduced them to a gorgeous house in Chandler, renovated for business use. They fell in love with the space and excitedly made it their own.    Today, storefront windows, an open door and gorgeous aromas greet all who enter Desert Sage. The walls are covered in glass bottles and jars holding tinctures and bulk herbs. And every other inch of the store offers products stimulating wellbeing like stones, literature, vitamins, organic beauty products, and much more. Desert Sage isn’t just a shop. It’s more of a holistic oasis, with warm and welcoming rooms flowing into bay doors and a beautiful, relaxing back patio. Functioning as a holistic center, Desert Sage also offers various therapeutic modalities. Brittney offers herbal consultations, which address personal health and emotional concerns. Her    Brittney, who is now a licensed herbalist through the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, smiles as she reminisces on her childhood in a healthy home. “No chocolate bars for us,” she laughs. “For our birthdays, we were able to pick out a special sugar-coated cereal as one of our presents.” As a candy-craving kid, Brittney may not have appreciated her mother’s healthy choices, but after graduating from Arizona State University, she found herself enticed by the nature of herbs. “I was extremely sick,” Brittney explains, “and my mother sent me to one of her instructors, Dr. Alan Christianson, ND. He gave me 28

a bunch of different herbs and said, ‘Cook these up, you will feel better,’ and I did.” Brittney’s firsthand experience amazed her, and she was immediately hooked. Luckily, Vicki started taking herb classes over 25 years ago. With a strong knowledge and understanding, Vicki took her daughter to purchase herbs and essential oils from various stores in the valley. Together, they immersed themselves in holistic literature, herbs and tinctures.    Vicki, excited to share their common interest, suggested opening an herbal store in 1998. Together they spent a year creating their business model. The duo even took a trip to

clients leave with a special mixture of bulk herbs to aid in their treatment. The center also offers therapeutic massage, colon hydrotherapy, infrared sauna, pre- and post natal care, neuromuscular therapy and more.    Clients trust in Desert Sage to lead them through pregnancy, having children and even tragedy. The knowledge and compassion of the women heading this store is evident as they greet their clients by name, comfort them and provide them with holistic help. “This is such a rewarding aspect that I didn’t consider when coming into this business,” says Brittney. “We establish these relationships with our clients, and life happens… A woman comes in and says, ‘My husband died,’ and we try to help her through herbal remedies.” As holistic care continues to make a large impact in the lives of many, Desert Sage Herbs paves the way as the only holistic center of its kind in the East Valley. Thanks to this amazing mother-daughter duo, residents have an amazing spot to nourish their bodies and nurture their souls.

An East Valley Reiki master gives us the scoop on energy systems and an alternative to medicine growing in popularity. Reiki, a Japanese practice developed in 1922, is making its way into hospitals and homes across the world. The technique, used for stress reduction, relaxation and healing is administered through “laying hands”. Gaining popularity in the medical world in the mid-90s, Reiki continues to receive note as a cost-effective, therapeutic technique to treat disease.   Catherine Vega, an East Valley resident, has been practicing Reiki and Chakra work for the last 18 years. While working as a graphic designer at the Arizona Republic, Catherine felt drawn to the world of psychology and alternative medicine. She constantly found herself immersed in self-healing and meditation books. “I’ve always wanted to know what makes people tick,” Catherine says. “Its’ always been that way for me. Both my

grandparents were healers, so it was in the family. But I wasn’t aware until my 30’s!”    Although Catherine practices Reiki’s “laying hands”, she explains that she rarely touches people. Her sessions are much more vocal, taking a life coach approach. This approach also includes focus on the body as a system. “Because, everything is a system within a system,” Catherine says.    When addressing these systems, Catherine practices core healing and energetic balancing. Catherine’s passion, talent and years of experience make her the perfect support. Together, dreams, realities, values and goals are truly discovered. The outcome allows for optimal awareness, often turning “unreachable” dreams into realities.

FOREHEAD

EYEBROWS

Q. I OVER-PLUCKED – WHAT NOW? A. Now is the most difficult time; please, let them grow! Stop tweezing and come see me. I can give you a brow lesson and help you with brow powder and/or a brow pencil. Don’t worry, I can salvage your brows while they are growing back.

Q: HOW DO I TREAT MY OILY FOREHEAD WITHOUT DRYING THE REST OF MY SKIN? A. If an oil blotting tissue won’t cut it, then an at-home mask like the Mu Lavender Mask from Sonya Dakar applied just to the forehead once or twice a week will help absorb and slow down oil production.

EYELASHES

Q. I WISH I HAD LONGER LASHES... A. Almost everyone is eyelash obsessed. If you want longer, fuller lashes try Latisse, it is a great way to make your own lashes look AMAZING!

CHEEKS

Q. I HAVE SOME SUN DAMAGE ON MY CHEEKS. A. Hyperpigmentation or sun-damage can be addressed in several ways, and there are several forms, which all require a slightly different approach to treatment. Using a serum daily with a dose of hydroquinone (HQ) will help to significantly lighten the pigment on the skin by essentially telling the pigment cells to stop producing the pigment where it’s applied. In addition to using the performance ingredient HQ, there are some treatments we can do to help significantly lighten or eliminate the sun spots.

UNDER EYES Q. HOW CAN I BE

PROACTIVE WHEN IT COMES TO THE DELICATE SKIN UNDER MY EYES? A. First, get good sleep, drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen. Apply an eye cream or serum to your orbital bone with your ring finger, patting gently. There are many creams and serums, like the Tri-Peptide Eye Cream or Serum from Skin Script, that help with dark circles, puffiness, and hydration. ( LL)

NOSE

Q. WHAT ARE THESE LITTLE RED VEINS ON MY NOSE? A. Small red capillaries can prove difficult to permanently eliminate. However, there is a treatment modality called Veingough that uses radio frequency to heat the small veins or capillaries to cauterize them and close off the blood supply, thereby eliminating the vein/capillary treated. Other treatments such as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) laser treatments or PhotoFacial treatments can target red/ brown pigment, but these modalities have a difficult time actually closing off the source of the redness found in the small venous capillaries (which makes Veingough the better option).

AROUND MOUTH/SMILE LINES

Q. I HAVE SPOTTED A FEW SMILE LINES! A. Botox and dermal fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, are the most well-known options for minimizing the dynamic movement of expression lines in the face; however, they are not the only options we have to target these lines. Dermapen is rising to the top of the list in popular aesthetic treatments for fine lines and creping of the skin, specifically on the forehead, around the eyes and mouth.

LAURA BENSON Master Hairstylist, Colorist, Extension Specialist

In July 2011 I went to Laura in tears. My hair was shoulder length and my stylist at the time was changing my color from black to blonde. The stylist did it in stages and in the last stage—she fried it! My hair would break off every time I moved my head. Laura was up front and honest with me and told me I basically had to start over. So I did! She gave me the most adorable cut and fixed my color! I have been going to Laura since and now my hair is the longest and the healthiest it has EVER been! Not only did Laura fix my hair back then; she has been giving me great hair color and beautiful styles since the day I went to her with tears! I’ve been bleach blonde, dark blonde, and with low lights and highlights! And I am a tough one as I am 85 percent gray! It was a blessing my old stylist ruined my hair because I found Laura! FITNESS TRENDS

ROCKIN’ RESOLUTIONS BY BEN JONES

Another year has passed, and it is time once again to make New Years resolutions! One of the top goals is always to get in shape, but statistics show that by February most people have given up on their goal, often through discouragement from lack of results. Why is this? It’s quite interesting being in the fitness industry to witness this trend. Go into any large gym in the month of January and it will be packed almost beyond capacity with people trying to lose weight. But after working out consistently for January – whether it’s going to classes, spending an hour on the treadmill, or doing exercises on machines, little to no results are seen. This is where discouragement sets in and people throw in the towel. 34

Does this sound like you or someone you know???

Think about it like this – if you were trying to learn to read on our own with no one teaching you, how difficult would it be to figure it out? Without the guidance of our parents growing up it would be significantly harder, if it would ever happen at all. Fitness and nutrition is no different. If you have never been taught the correct way to exercise or eat and try to figure it out on your own, it will be quite difficult to succeed. The problem is made worse when every month there seems to be some new fad diet or workout routine being promoted.    Let’s look at the first and most important aspect of a fitness routine, nutri-

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2014

tion. Try doing this: make your largest meal of the day in the morning when you need the most fuel. Eat something that will stick with you (i.e. a whey protein fruit smoothie or veggie omelet) instead of a bagel or sugary coffee drink. Bring a snack to eat between your meals such as a handful of almonds or carrots. Constantly eating increases your metabolism, which results in more calories burned. For dinner, try doing something that consists of a protein and veggie such as roasted chicken and a salad.    If trying to figure out what to eat and making it is the problem, use this special from Midwestern Meats in Mesa, AZ. They are offering 25% off your first order of pre-made, home delivered meals with coupon code Lifestyle25 at MidwesternFitness.com. They are a family owned restaurant that provides a special service of healthy, home-delivered meals. The other aspect to weight loss is exercise. Certain activities are more effective than others for body change. To add something basic, try doing 40 air squats or push-ups after every meal. However, doing air squats may not be enough. For those

who are seeking radical change, that is where the services of a personal trainer can change your life.   Elite Health Training in Gilbert is offering a FREE Saturday morning boot camp and customized meal plan by a nutritionist to the community to kick-start your goals. The boot camp is run by army veterans, so you get a highly effective, motivating, fun workout while meeting new people. They are also hosting the New Year’s Body Transformation Contest starting January 18, where the grand prize is $1,000. Go to EliteHealthTraining.com to learn more and register. Lastly, I will leave with something my high school chemistry teacher would always say, “Excuses are like butts, everyone has one and they all stink!” So for this New Year don’t make excuses, take action and make your goals happen! ZENLIFE STUDIO BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

ZenLife Studio is a beautiful and peaceful new yoga studio created by Linda Heller. Linda has always been inspired by a yogic lifestyle and designed the atmosphere of the studio to reflect the philosophies of yoga. Linda is a yoga therapist and is enthusiastic to share her knowledge of the mind and body connections with others at her new studio located in Queen Creek. “From the moment I finished my first yoga class at Gilbert Yoga with Cassandra Wallick, I knew teaching yoga was my calling,” says Heller. “I have created a place where people can come from all walks of life and feel at home, and no matter what their day was like, leave feeling released, renewed and refreshed.”   The space at ZenLife Studio was created as a place of community. “This is Queen Creek’s premier yoga studio,” notes Heller. ZenLife offers the newest technology in Hot Yoga using infrared heaters. “By using infrared heaters, the body becomes warm and flexible quicker and calories are burned faster,” explains Heller. Other classes offered are Slow Flow, Kids, Pre-natal and Power Yoga. “All my classes will be very therapeutic,” states Heller. Anyone at any level can benefit from joining any of the classes and walk-ins are always welcome. Slow Flow is based on building a framework that includes focused breath, safe poses and proper alignment. Power Yoga keeps the same basis as Slow Flow with a more intense focus on strength and flexibility.

36

ZenLife Kids’ Yoga class teaches breathing, how to deal with stress and how to find comfort in discomfort. “Life lessons are taught during this class, along with fun poses, stretching and dancing,” notes Heller.   Other services available through ZenLife Studio include Therapeutic Massage, Reiki, Life Coaching, Holistic Nutrition Consulting (by appointment), group fitness classes and an amazing boutique filled with yoga accessories, clothing and gifts. Linda is excited to share her knowledge with all who want to experience the world of yoga and the first class is always complimentary.

FEET: FOOTWEAR FOR A CAUSE BY JESSICA RUDOLPH

While listening to his pastor speak about “serving” one Sunday at Rock Point Church in Queen Creek, David Gillette was blessed with an idea. The WP Carey School of Business Graduate and devoted Christian had a vision to begin a faithinspired apparel company, with the hopes of changing the lives of people worldwide. After two years of development, the first items produced were a line of stylish, yet comfortable flip-flops. God Feet was born.   The mission is simple. For every pair of flip-flops sold, another pair is given to someone in need. Over 300 million people around the world lack basic necessities like shoes to protect them from intestinal parasites and other diseases associated with walking barefoot. Since December 2010, the God Feet team has traveled to some of world’s most impoverished nations, where they deliver footwear while serving others and spreading God’s word.    The most recent expansion of God Feet is GF Clothing, which offers faith-based t-shirts and other apparel. This division’s focus is to raise funds for local families who are suffering from financial hardships, life threatening diseases or other tragic events. Every ten days, GF Clothing sponsors a new family who benefits from receiving $6 from every garment

sold. The funds are given to assist the family in offsetting the cost of treatments or other necessary expenses.   God Feet is honored to have donated thousands of dollars across the country to people in need and privileged to share their incredible stories – like a toddler named Zane who is fighting cancer; three-year-old Rosalie, who lost her life by drowning in her family’s swimming pool; Wendy, who was diagnosed with brain cancer, told she only had four months to live and is now 100% cancer-free; or David, who lost his life in a car accident on Ellsworth Road shortly after graduating high school.   In addition to asking people around the world to join them in prayer, God Feet gives each family a platform to raise awareness for their cause. They also work with the family to design a custom t-shirt, which is available for purchase during their 10-day

campaign. God Feet is always looking for families in need who’d like to be featured for sponsorship. Anyone interested is encouraged to complete the signup form on the Contact Us page of godfeet.com. Moving forward, the company is excited to launch the God Feet Shoe, slated for release in 2014. God Feet’s leaders believe their main focus should be sharing the hope they have in Christ. With that, God Feet is grounded in the belief that they are commanded to “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creation.” (Mark 16:15)

BOUTIQUES OF THE EAT VALLEY

BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

P.S. DARLING

BOUTIQUE What do you get when you take a mother and daughter fashionista team and give them the fire to start their own business? You get P.S. Darling Boutique – a classy, sassy, fashion-forward clothing and jewelry boutique that will have every woman cheering the latest additions to their closet.

a lot of thought into it,” notes Burk. “Our inventory has to have purpose. It has to have a bow, bling or studding; something that says that it deserves to be in our store.”   Mother and daughter like to “dig” when they go to market, finding pieces to add to the collection at P.S. Darling. “We go to the Magic Market Week in Vegas and we like the fashion district in L.A. But, we plan to travel as far away as Dallas and New York to find special, unique lines,” says Burk. “At the same time, one of the designers of our jewelry lines is in Scottsdale.” No fashion stone is left unturned in trying to find one-of-a-kind items for the store.   Arizona has unique demands in clothing because of our weather and those requirements are incorporated, too. “We are very choosy about our fabrics. We want everything to be lightweight, comfortable and not confining. We like soft, silky and manageable,” says Burk. The staff assists clients in creating the perfect outfit.

Clothing is half the fun at P.S. Darling Boutique. The other half of the store is a massive collection of jewelry, accessories and footwear. With a Victorian feel, guests at P.S. Darling feel like royalty amidst a backdrop of crimson velvet curtains and opulence. “Our store is heavy on bling!” states Burk. Check their Instagram account for weekly clothing giveaways and more.

“I love to shop and I love clothes and fashion. My daughter, Brooklyn Martinez, is 19 and is the same way,” states owner Kim Burk. The duo incorporates fun, blingy and exciting clothing and jewelry into P.S. Darling. Building on her love of fashion and classes in fashion merchandising, Martinez brings a lot of fun and creativity to the store. The mother and daughter duo offer a wide range of styles for teens and college-age girls, housewives and the generation of trendy, forever-young ladies. “We want to reach a range of women. We’re a boutique where mothers, daughters and granddaughters can come and leave with something cool,” says Burk.   From Chevron print maxi skirts, distressed denim jeans, military-inspired coats, bohemian dresses, blingy tops and scarves, to ruffled minis, designer jewelry and trendy purses, there is something for everyone. Styles range from bold and daring to classic and contemporary, with an emphasis on clothing that flows well, fits the body correctly and makes a fashion statement. “We put VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2014

Amazing Arizona

SPAHHH moments GREAT GETAWAYS CLOSE TO HOME AND WORTH THE DRIVE

You made it through the holidays in one piece (barely) and are now a few curse words (perhaps a few hundred) into your New Year’s resolutions to eat healthier, work out more and give up that one nagging vice you just haven’t quite been able to shake. You’re hungry, you’re tired and you’re cranky. You’ve spent the last few months taking care of everyone else in your life – now it’s time to do something incredible for you. There’s nothing on this planet like

treating yourself to a full day of relaxation and pampering at the hands of highly trained professionals in one of the most gorgeous settings you’ve ever laid eyes on. Each of these 10 destination spas offers unparalleled service and luxurious accommodations with jaw-dropping views of the Arizona desert, mountains, lakes or red rocks. Feel the stress melt away as you seclude yourself from the rest of the world for a few peaceful, soul-satisfying hours.

MIRAVAL LIFE IN BALANCE SPA 5000 E. Via Estancia Miraval Tucson, (800) 232-3969 miravalresorts.com

Situated on 400 acres of picturesque land near Tucson’s Santa Catalina Mountains, Miraval Resort & Spa’s 116 casita-style luxury spa accommodations and suites offer jaw-dropping views of the surrounding mountains. In May of 2012, Miraval unveiled their new Miraval Life in Balance Spa with Clarins, which features a Clodagh design and exclusive treatments from Clarins. The goal of the new look and feel “is designed to transform guests both physically and emotionally using nurture, rest and the magic of the desert landscape.” A favorite of Oprah and Ellen, the awardwinning spa also has a new menu of services offering “innovative, life-enhancing treatments” performed by staff therapists who have studied all over the world. Miraval offers a variety of yoga, fitness, and wellness programs, as well as life-affirming private sessions. > EDITOR’S PICK SPA MOMENT: SHAMANA-KARMA

Inspired by the Ayurveda healing rituals dating back thousands of years, the Shamana-Karma is created to purify and boost its recipient’s immunity and spirits. The traditional South Indian ‘Karma’ or treatment begins when you inhale the steamy scents of lemongrass, mint, nutmeg and clove in the treatment room, engaging your senses. A curative blend of Coconut, Ginger and Rosemary oils are massaged into the skin using an authentic, “Vashesh” or deep tissue technique. The steaming, hand-wrapped

poultices warm and energize the body, while the deep pressure allows muscles to become supple and release both their tension and toxins. A warm aromatic wrap follows, finishing with a cleansing hibiscus plant powder scrub, restoring the vitality of your skin as well as your spirit.

JOYA SPA AT MONTELUCIA RESORT 4949 E. Lincoln Drive Paradise Valley, (480) 627-3020 montelucia.com

Sheltered at the base of Camelback Mountain, Montelucia Resort & Spa has the feel of a European village, complete with ornate archways and majestic fountains. Ranked the # I resort in the Southwest by Condé Nast Traveler readers, Montelucia offers Arizona’s only Hammam-inspired luxury spa. A Mediterranean bathing ritual popular in Northern Africa and Moorish Spain around 600 A.D., Hammam is said to yield healing and transformative powers. Each Joya Spa experience begins by setting your intention, then releasing it into the universe so what you desire can return to you. Guests are also invited to place their hands on a large quartz crystal to relieve stress and negativity from the body and unwind by the rooftop pool after a treatment while soaking in stunning views of Camelback Mountain. > EDITOR’S PICK SPA MOMENT: THE HAMMAM EXPERIENCE

The meaning behind the Hammam bathing ritual and going from hot to cold environments relates back to the beginning of spa culture: the Greek practice of cold water bathing to Persian steam baths to Hebrew ritual purification. The benefits of the process include increased circulation, improved balance and mental and emotional states, strengthening the immune system, and flushing toxins. You will begin your experience in the warming room, which is set at 98 degrees, the body’s temperature. The tile benches are warmed and ergonomically correct for the human body, so when you sit down, you immediately relieve pressure points. Next you move to the scrub room, a beautiful tile room where on a 150-year-old rosewood bed, you will receive a black soap/kassa glove scrub—very quick and traditional. Once rinsed from your scrub, you will begin the hot and cold ritual, which consists of 5-10 minutes in the steam room then to a cold deluge, moving on to 5-10 minutes in the whirlpool and then 5-10 minutes in the sauna. The ritual ends with a second cold deluge.

THE RITZ-CARLTON SPA®, DOVE MOUNTAIN 15000 N. Secret Springs Drive Marana, (520) 572-3000 ritzcarlton.com

Secluded along the Tortolita Mountains, the Ritz-Carlton Resort & Spa®, Dove Mountain offers luxury amenities and services in the same setting that inspired the ancient Hohokam, who inhabited the area sometime between 300 B.C. and 1500 A.D. According to local legend, the Hohokam believed all things have a spirit, which the spa strives to celebrate. Guests can choose from a selection of eco-holistic therapies based upon balancing elements, while healing sacred stones preserve the heritage and time-honored traditions of the Sonoran Desert”. In fact, the entire spa experience was designed around the balancing elements of wood, fire, earth and water. The 17,000 square-foot spa and fitness center features a selection of treatments that reflect nature and the serenity of the surrounds, including wellness counseling, body and anti-aging therapies. > EDITOR’S PICK SPA MOMENT: DESERT GEMSTONE RITUAL

Gemstone therapy has been used for centuries by ancient desert cultures that used the stones in healing rituals to treat ailments of the mind and body. It has been found that the soothing effects of gemstones can help to ease sore muscles, alleviate stress, and increase the flow of energy. Once stress is eliminated, the mind and body is able to restore itself to a healthy equilibrium. Begin your journey by allowing your spirit to choose which gemstone is most suited to you at that moment. This treatment starts with a calming foot soak while you enjoy sipping on herbal tea, followed by a mild dry exfoliation and a soothing aromatic bath. The desert ritual concludes with a full body massage using healing gemstone placement.

Your face is then cleansed with an oat polish and nourished with a hydrating aloe & prickly pear mask. Spa Day 101 You finally booked yourself a relaxing post-holidays spa day, and you can’t wait for the pampering to begin. The only problem is you don’t have a clue what to bring or what to do once you’re there. Valley Lifestyles to the rescue! These tips should help you avoid looking like an amateur:

> PACK A GYM BAG WITH THE FOLLOWING ESSENTIALS

Workout Wear: (yoga pants, running shoes, etc.) if you plan to try a fitness class. Swimsuit: for sweating it out in the sauna or lounging by the pool. Book or Magazine: to read during downtime between treatments. Cosmetic Bag: with hair tie, facial sunscreen, deodorant and light make-up. Change of Clothes: if you are planning on hitting the town when you leave.

> LEAVE THESE AT HOME

Towels: The spa will provide as many as you need. Robe and Flip-Flops: This spa “uniform” will be given to you upon arrival. Body and Hair Grooming Products: Shampoo, conditioner, lotion, razors, brushes and hair dryers will be plentiful.

> ONLY TAKE OFF WHAT YOU CHOOSE

For most body treatments and massages, it is appropriate to shed it all as you will be under a towel the entire duration of your procedure. If you aren’t comfortable in the buff, leave on your bikini bottoms. If you are lying down getting a massage, you will need to take off your bikini top to maximize the muscle relaxing experience. Keep it on if you are going to be standing up or moving around during your treatment.

> TIP THE SAME AS YOU WOULD AT A BEAUTY SALON Typically, between 15-20 percent of the total treatment cost is appreciated.

> TURN OFF YOUR RINGER AND LEAVE YOUR CELL PHONE IN YOUR LOCKER

You will have a much more relaxing, stress-free visit if you aren’t arguing with your kids over text messaging. If you must use it, step outside by the pool so you don’t disturb other guests who are trying to get their Zen on.

Then comes a gentle massage with hydrating, vitamin rich lotions, complimented with body sprays. While relaxing in a warm towel wrap, guests receive a delicious scalp and shoulder massage with aromatherapy oils designed to calm the mind. Chandler Blvd Ste. 1 Chandler, (480) 855-0204 All my life I have been in and around athletics and love showing people what their bodies are capable of in an inspiring environment. I have been working for Funktional Fitness for almost 3 years and have been blessed to be able to help people reach their goals from fat loss to sports conditioning and everything in between. A few months ago I was hospitalized for a bad bacterial infection that started as an abscess in my throat. The infection initially spread to my thyroid, then my heart and lungs soon following. After going through 5 surgeries, 10 days in the ICU, and one month total in the hospital, I wasn’t sure if I would be here writing to you. The Lord provided an amazing support system through my family, girlfriend, friends and FunkFit family. If I didn’t take care of my body the doctors said I would not have made it, which gave fitness a whole new perspective. Returning to normal life was tough and drawn out but everyone around me was so encouraging. Now I want to inspire you to set some goals yourself for the New Year; Write them down and put them somewhere you can see every day.

DR. TOM TIPTON, DMD., M.D.S TIPTON ORTHODONTICS

2084 E. Southern Ave., Ste. G-101, Tempe 3011 S. Lindsay Rd., Ste. 116, Gilbert (480) 838-3437, www.tiptonorthodontics.com

We were just twelve years old, yet the general’s son and I rode our horses through the Panamanian jungle freely and oblivious to dangers or rules. Upon reaching a clearing, we spotted the prized mango grove a hundred yards ahead. We stopped at one of the low hanging branches, dismounted, and climbed high enough to find comfortable seating. And then the feast began as we ate mango after mango with thick juices running down our faces. The horses foraged below and soon mango juice mixed with saliva dripped profusely from their mouths to the jungle floor. What does this have to do with orthodontics? Perhaps nothing . . . but Dr. Tipton loves adventure and always has a great story to tell of his youth in Panama, Japan and Texas, a church mission to Argentina, dental humanitarian missions to Tonga, Honduras and Mexico and an occasional story of his father’s imprisonment for a year in Germany during World War II. Maybe the relationship to orthodontics is that orthodontic treatment is also a great adventure for both Dr. Tipton and his patients. The journey from misplaced teeth to a beautiful smile is laden with wonderful surprises, culminating in improved function and a confident and attractive appearance. Come on in for a complimentary evaluation and excellent treatment in an honest and caring atmosphere. And along the way you may hear a story or two. I would love to hear yours. IN THE

SPIRIT OF

SUSHI BY KRISTIAN SEEMEYER

The Sushi Room is energetic and bustling.

The ceiling seems to sway with the Japanese lanterns hung high in the loft-like space, and bright cherry blossoms contrast the vibrant orange wall behind the sushi bar, all visible from the spacious patio. But what really sets this room and this place apart is the menu and the quality and depth of service with which it is delivered. It’s aloha service. A sizable amount of credit goes to Executive Chef and General Manager Blaise Kaili mahuna i ka awa kapa ula ‘o kinau Aki, or Blaise K. Aki for short. Half Hawaiian, and having spent years growing up in Hawaii, he credits his work ethic and his attitude to his native land, Kappa, located the east side of Kauai. When I walk into The Sushi Room in the morning,” says Blaise, “I hug my staff good morning, and as they arrive I hug them and welcome them to work. At first the staff probably thought that was different, but now it’s how we work. They don’t even know it, but they have the aloha spirit with each other and I hope they bring it to the guests that they serve.”    As The Sushi Room celebrates its Second Anniversary, it also rolls out a new menu with more attention to sushi and rolls, small plates rather than entrees, and drinks that court the dishes as well as the ambience. Sushi restaurants can often leave patrons wanting for libation choices. Not The Sushi Room. Ginger Crush starts with chilled sake, then adds vodka, ginger beer and muddled pear served on

FOOD SPOTLIGHT

the rocks. The drink is a great compliment to a spicy roll. The SR Saketini is a sake-based martini with cucumber-infused vodka, agave and lemon. The perfect foil to any wasabislathered bite.    One major change Blaise saw fit to make to the menu was to replace entrees with small plates. “I wanted people to be able to sample more of our different dishes and flavors,” he says. “And I like the idea of people sharing food--it’s more communal.” More of that aloha spirit shining in. One must-try small plate is the Crab Crakes. This is where Blaise’s Portland, Oregon influence comes in; it’s where he spent years furthering his craft working with high-quality seafood. Dungeness crab is packed into two ample discs and served over spicy aioli and Sriracha sauce. If straight-up sushi is your calling, you’ll find no limit to the quality of offerings at The Sushi Room. The toro, or tuna belly, at The Sushi Room is superb and Blaise serves it with a side of kizami wasabi. It’s fresh pickled wasabi, and its slight crunch and piquant freshness is all that’s needed to accompany the toro. Think of it as a wasabi relish. Of rolls, there are many. You name it, the able staff at The Sushi Room can make it. But a few specialties stand out. One such is the Poppin Roll created by Blaise after one too many customer requests.    “I had a lot of people who would say, I want a roll, but I also am craving some tempura 86

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2014

shrimp or scallops. So I created this roll to satisfy all those cravings,” says Blaise. And indeed it does. The roll is made with avocado, spicy crab, cilantro and jalapeno, and then drizzled with sweet Thai chili. It is then topped with tempura scallops and shrimp which have been tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce—the best of both worlds. Another signature roll is the Samarai Roll, a production in and of itself. This roll is mammoth: crab mix and shrimp tempura are topped with tuna and salmon, sweet eel sauce, spicy mayonnaise and red onion. Then the entire length of the roll is torched, caramelizing the onion with the sauces while blending its flavors. It’s a gorgeous piece of work, a wild and crazy feast for the senses.    If you ask Blaise what his favorite part of work at The Sushi Room is, he’ll smile and tell you, “That’s easy. It’s meeting new people and watching them enjoy my food.” He’s an affable guy, he’s got the aloha spirit and he’s passed that spirit on to his staff. Combine that with a quality new menu and it’s easy to see why The Sushi Room is a place you may want to start spending some quality time. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

IN SEASON SWEET POTATOES

SWEET POTATOES BY STEPHANIE MCINTOSH

While sweet potatoes are traditionally reminiscent of the holiday season, the health benefits and savory flavors are reason enough to enjoy them other times of the year. Believed to have its origins in the tropical regions of Central and South America, this orange-fleshed root vegetable serves as an excellent source of potassium, iron, calcium, vitamins A, C and B6, beta-carotene, and fiber. Often mislabeled as ‘yams’, sweet potatoes may yield a similar taste, but they score higher in nutrient value. As a distant relative of white potatoes, the sweet potato provides more vitamins and fiber while maintaining fewer calories and a lower glycemic index. The wealth of antioxidants can do wonders for your immune system during the prime time of flu season.    Besides offering an abundance of nutrients, sweet potatoes also lend themselves to savory recipes. While baking is often the go-to method for preparing sweet potatoes, there are certainly other tasty ways to enjoy them: mashed, steamed, sautéed, baked, grilled, pureed, etc. There are countless recipes for any meal of the day that will allow you to delight in the healthful and succulent flavors in the comfort of your own kitchen. The peak season for the freshest pick of the crop is October through the late winter months. When buying sweet potatoes, keep in mind that the pale varieties are not as moist or sweet as those with darker skins. The ideal choice is one that is firm, injury-free, heavy in weight and small to medium in size. Sweet potatoes can last for several weeks with maximum freshness if stored in a cooler temperature, away from light. Refrigeration is not the best method for storing, as it will take away from the sweet taste and result in a tough core. Don’t miss this pick of the season the next time you are stocking up at the local grocery store.

Oven Roasted Sweet Potato Chips with Ranch Dip INGREDIENTS:

3/4 pound sweet potatoes 1 Tbsp. olive oil 1 1/2 tsp. chili powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. ground cumin Light ranch dressing DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 425°. Cut 3/4 pound sweet potatoes into 1/4-inch-thick slices; set aside. Combine 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin. Add sweet potatoes; toss gently to coat. Cover a lightly oiled nonstick baking sheet with a single layer of potatoes; roast, turning once, until golden and tender, about 20 minutes. Serve with store-bought light ranch dressing. FINAL THOUGHTS

Weekday ONLY Diet Resolutions BY KELLY POLLARD

98

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2014

My name is Kelly & I’m a serial diet dropout.   My weight fluctuates like an over-caffeinated pendulum and my ambition to reign that all in swerves just as drunkenly. You name the diet and I’ve probably tried it. My inspirations and following failures are what spurs the billion dollar dieting industry. My latest bumper car ride has found me against Weight Watchers. For me, the accountability of stepping on a scale in front of a virtual stranger scares me into tracking my foods and stepping onto an elliptical machine more often than usual.    I broke up with Weight Watchers on the eve of last summer. A lethal combination of emotional drama in my life mixed well with the decision that I valued my relationship with margaritas and nachos much more than zero-point soups and fat-free cheese. I continued to pay the monthly diet fees for membership all through the summer despite taking a five-month hiatus. Cancelling the membership meant I was a quitter, when really, the diet and I were just on a break. In September, I knew I needed to start up again but also knew I’d gained some of the weight I’d lost. So instead of doing the walk of shame to the scale, I insisted I’d lose the ten pounds I’d gained over the summer before I showed up at a meeting to lose the rest of it.

Hey, it made perfect sense to me. I didn’t want to admit my failure going off the sacred ‘plan’. I knew how the plan worked; unfortunately, I couldn’t work the plan. You can imagine how that went. I rekindled the diet romance right before the holidays, because what’s more depressing than tracking a full Thanksgiving meal along with bottomless glasses of wine? I’m happy to say I survived the demons of Halloween candy, Thanksgiving gluttony, and Christmas cookie, stress-induced binges. My goal through the whole season was to maintain what little I had lost in the last year and hold steady until January.   We all know what January means. Resolutions and resolve to live a better life. Along with being a serial dieter, I’m also guilty of over-planning resolutions and personal goals. I’m in love with making long lists of the many ways I will improve my life. In case anyone wondered, January 17th is officially “Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day”. I’d counter that and say, for me, every Friday at 4 o’clock is “Table My Resolutions for the Weekend Day”. If I didn’t allow for indulgence, I risk that summertime all-or-nothing dieting mindset. The gym and the points counter will still be waiting for me when I wake up in a fog on Monday morning. I don’t necessarily like tracking the dips and chips and sips of wine, but I sure do love the way my jeans fit after committing to my health.    So what if I I’m not the perfect picture of dieting? I save the weekends for margaritas and nachos.
