Women’s Hair Loss is on the Rise Find out if you are a candidate for the Evolution Hair Loss Treatment Program Today! by Angela Spoon

1

Question: What causes women’s hair loss?

Answer: Female hair loss can be caused by multiple factors, but the most common cause is an underlying genetic pre-disposition to hair loss known as androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss. Unlike the popular myth that you inherit hair loss from your mother’s father, women can inherit hair loss from either side of the family. This means that women can inherit hair loss from men and vice versa. It is much more common than people know. There are other factors that can cause hair loss or increase hair loss due to family history. They include stress, lifestyle, diet, thyroid dis-function, fungal infections, scalp parasites, and medications (most common hormone replacement and birth control pills). 4

for the loss, the treatment protocol will vary. Usually though for common female pattern hair loss the protocol is relatively similar. We a have a 9 month program that includes twice weekly office visits for cool light laser treatments for the scalp. This stimulates cell regeneration and is already approved to promote thicker hair. Our program also includes topical pharmaceuticals, hormone therapy balancing cream, nutritional supplementation, holistic hair care products, and topical scalp serums. This is most aggressive treatment that we offer, but it works. When you use everything together the way that our program does, you are bound to get results.

quickly as possible and treat that problem. Don’t try to treat it yourself because it wastes time that could be spent growing hair back. I obviously would recommend to call us and then come in for a consultation. Worst case scenario, you can stop the progression of the loss. Best case, we can dramatically reverse your hair loss and regrow hair. We have had numerous cases where a woman was wearing a wig or extensions when they started the treatment. Then 9 months later they were able to remove their wig permanently or stop getting extensions because their hair had gained so much volume and density.

Question: What do your clinics use to help women with thinning hair?

Answer: Depending on the reason

Question: What advice would you give a woman who is dealing with this problem?

Question: Is there hope for women with thinning hair? How do you control it?

Answer: There certainly is. There are

so many tools that can be used to control female hair loss and reverse it in many cases. Once you have established the reason for the hair loss and it can be treated with a variety of methods. Unfortunately, most general physicians simply don’t have the time or the knowledge to get a full understanding of why a woman is losing her hair. The female patient is then left combing the internet for solutions that rarely leads to any real answer.

Question: How you do know what is causing your hair loss?

Answer: A simple patient history is the easiest way. Many women have blood tests for hormonal issues, thyroid dysfunction, iron levels, and vitamin D deficiency. Unfortunately this rarely produces any other cause other than normal pattern hair loss. At our clinics we use a video microscope to analyze the condition of the scalp at 50x magnification. At this level we can tell if the client has loss due to stress, diet, infection of the hair follicle, or simple hormonally related hair loss.

6

Question: Is there maintenance required?

Answer: 99% yes. I usually tell people it’s like brushing your teeth. If you don’t brush them and go to the dentist, your teeth will rot and fall out. The same goes for your hair. If you have a genetic hair loss problem, you have two options; oneyou can treat the problem long term, or two- let your hair fall out and go bald. Clearly our clients choose hair.

“My biggest motivation has to be my daughter... for anything I do in my life, not just boxing,”

18

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2014

“It started with self-defense classes, and as I took more of those, I started exploring other arts,” McPherson says. “When I found boxing, I just really liked it.” Her first foray into self-defense happened her senior year of high school. Postgraduation, she found herself traveling a lot, usually alone, and felt the need to stay up to date on different techniques and classes. She discovered boxing, and from there, her passion grew. After training for a year, McPherson had her first fight while living in Chicago in 2008. She ended up winning the Chicago Golden Gloves Championship. “It was pretty nerve-wracking,” she says when asked how she felt entering her first real match. “You spar before your first fight; you know what it feels like, but when you spar you always hold back a little, no one hits you as hard as someone trying to hit you in a fight. It was nerve-wracking going in, but I took a few punches, I rallied, then I realized I could handle it. I went to work and won; it was an amazing feeling and I couldn’t wait for the next one.” She continued to box but ended up taking a break for several years after getting married and becoming pregnant with her daughter, Saoirse. It wasn’t until 2012 that she decided to re-explore the sport she once loved. “I just really missed it. After having my daughter, like every woman, I kind of got a little bit out of shape,” she says. “ I didn’t find anything that was getting me back into that shape I was in when I was competing, so I decided to get back into it.” And jump back into it she did. McPherson started booking fights about every other month, averaging

12-15 fights between 2012-2013. This past January, she achieved her goal of ranking nationally. “I ranked 3rd nationally--that feels pretty good,” she says. “The goal is eventually to make the Olympic team. Currently, she juggles two jobs, training, and caring for her fouryear-old daughter from her previous marriage. “My biggest motivation has to be my daughter, absolutely for anything I do in my life, not just boxing,” she shares. “When I was working, going to school and boxing it was all because I wanted to work to provide the best possible future for her.” Together the two are quite the active gals spending weekends doing outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, spending time at the park or even going to the rock climbing gym. It’s quite the juggling act McPherson has on her hands. “Discipline – it takes a lot of discipline,” she explains. “You have to be dedicated constantly. You have to get up early every morning to train, start your diet right… my days can go crazy but I have to find the time to do it. Whether it’s getting up early, staying up late or doing both. You just have to have a lot of drive if you really want to go the distance. It’s not easy.” McPherson is currently training for an international amateur boxing competition this spring. For updates on her current matches, follow her on Facebook at facebook.com/ kcadmcpherson.

HOME POOL PARTY

PALOOZA BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

The heat of July limits our outdoor activity severely, but before your family catches cabin fever, get them outside with a great pool party! Include the entire family in the planning and decorating to squash summer boredom and add to the value of the experience. Spending a few extra dollars and hours will make both the planning and partying extra fun! Get creative; decide on a theme and work together to craft the details. INVITATIONS: Get your list of invites together, and pass the responsibility to the little ones! Pick up some stencils of beach balls, inner tubes and palm trees, stationary paper and envelopes. The kids can cut the stencils, create the invite message and decorate! LIBATIONS: Fun summer straws are a great way to add to a delicious cocktail (or juice.) With straws, you can tie in your theme, label drinks with party goers’ names or just have fun with it! Double-sided tape will keep your dÊcor in tact and looking great! POOL-SIDE PICNIC: Make lunch fun and easy with a pool-side picnic. Enjoy party food favorites with BBQ dishes and healthy options like a fruit kabob. Ball up water melon, cantaloupe and Pineapple on wooden skewers for a treat everyone will love. KEEP-COOL BUCKETS: Take your theme a step further by purchasing a few buckets you can fill with ice to keep bottled beverages cool. Paint themeinspired scenes on your metal buckets to add pops of color and style to your pool party. The buckets will keep drinks refreshing, and can be used all year!

GET YOUR

CAMP ON

Cabin Fever is a term generally used for isolation during winter seasons, but here in Arizona, it has an entirely new meaning. Kick the symptoms by escaping to an amazing camping location boasting cooler temperatures, fresh, cool water, and gorgeous scenery. Nothing will beat your restlessness like a weekend nature adventure packing with hiking, biking and swimming. Here are two of our favorite spots close by: -LR FOSSIL SPRINGS: Nestled in the Cocconino nation Forest, the 11,550-acre wilderness is at the bottom of a steep canyon near the edge of the Colorado Plateau. You will need to hike your camping gear to reach Fossil Springs Wilderness, but the trek is well worth it. The wilderness is described as the most diverse riparian area in Arizona. The refreshing stream bursts 20,000 gallons of water a minute leading to a 1,600-foot canyon. LOCKETT MEADOW: Just north of Flagstaff, this meadow is one of the best places to pitch a tent with the family. At 7,000 feet the meadow , surrounded by gorgeous Aspens, is in a prime location with access to some of the areas best hiking trails. The cool temperature of Northern Arizona makes hiking the highest point in the state, Mount Humphreys, an enjoyable summer experience.

CULINARY ADVENTURES

THE CUTTING BOARD SPROUTS UP FOR ORGANIC, VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN ENTHUSIASTS. BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

“...we get our food organically and locally, and it does taste different. The raw ingredients themselves have a different quality.”

26

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2014

More than just a restaurant, The Cutting Board is a way of thinking and living. The vegan and vegetarian East Valley café and bakery is passionately owned and operated by culinary adventurists Krystal and Sean Macdonald, who enjoy spreading the importance and flavors of healthy food. The Cutting Board opened almost nine months ago, and the feedback from customers has been stellar. “It’s been pretty fantastic. We’ve had a lot of great comments on the quality of the food we serve. In fact, we got a review on Yelp the other day and the guy’s comment was ‘The food tastes whole,’ and he didn’t know how to describe it,” states Sean. “Reading that, I knew exactly what he was talking about because we get our food organically and locally, and it does taste different. The raw ingredients themselves have a different quality.” The breakfast menu includes a house-orchestrated granola bowl, baked oatmeal and breakfast burrito with black beans and roasted seasonal vegetables served in a chipotle tortilla with sweet potato hash and a side of seasonal fresh fruit. Lunch and dinner include a large menu including the tacos duo served with The Cutting Boards’ very own spiced walnut “meat” and a Portobello dill burger. The hearty bowl is the most popular item and includes brown rice, roasted veggies, hummus, salad greens, sweet potato, cilantro micro-greens, hemp hearts and cumin lime vinaigrette. Little sprouts can

enjoy the good eats, too, with selections such as the nutty butter star with organic peanut butter, mashed banana, sunflower seeds and flax meal served on sprouted wheat bread and cut into the shape of the star, and gluten-free season baked oatmeal with rolled oats, almond milk and seasoned with a dash of maple syrup, vanilla and fresh fruit topped with apple slices and chia seeds. “We have things that people eat every day, but we’re taking it and finding the healthiest and most nutritious way to make it,” says Krystal. “We spend about 90% of our time at home cooking,” she continues. “Most of our recipes are things that we came up with in our kitchen and it’s not off-the-wall stuff.” Bakery items include cinnamon rolls and cupcakes made with a healthy twist. Also, don’t miss their delicious take-and-bake pizzas, juices and smoothies, teas and organic and locally roasted and freshly brewed coffee. “We live in Mesa and we want to support our local community. We want to provide something that we know we would want,” states Sean. The restaurant holds special events each month discussing such things as healthy dieting, using food as medicine, and even a book club. Krystal also heads up freshandraw.org, a website devoted to people learning to eat fresh and raw and it will eventually become the non-profit extension of their business. Check the website for a blog and upcoming events. Vegans, vegetarians and those who eat gluten-free or have sensitive diets will love the selection, recipes and flavor combinations found at The Cutting Board.

A NUTTY

OPPORTUNITY NUTWHATS SPINS TO SUCCESS BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

Ah, nuts! Say what? Nutwhats, that’s what. An enterprising gal from Chandler has taken the concept of nutty confections and elevated it to a delicious art form by thinking outside the proverbial snack lines. Nutwhats are the brain child of Lisa Rast, who founded the company in 1999 and at the time called it Nuts for Brittle. “Back at that time it was more of a hobby. I would do a couple of shows and local festivals and small corporate gifting,” states Rast, who also took up teaching figure skating around the same time. She was a little more dedicated to teaching skating during that period, while the nut confection business took on a lesser role, although during that time she developed the recipe for what would become Nutwhats. “I got my degree in engineering, so I’m one who always plays around with stuff to see why things work or why they don’t, and these are all my own original recipes I came up with,” Rast says. “Initially, we had a hard time getting people to understand exactly what they were. We couldn’t really explain what they were because they’re just different.” After going through a branding process and deciding on a name that reflected the yummy product, Nutwhats was officially launched on Halloween in 2011. The brittle-like confections combine nuts and other delicious ingredients to make adorable and uncommonly-shaped treats. Some of the flavors include pecan, almond, beer britty, green chile beer britty, jalapeno beer and cinna walnut oat. On the more decadent side of Nutwhats are “scribbles”, which are delicious confections crisscrossed with chocolate drizzle. Flavors include pecan, bacon pecan, peanut pretzel, cinna walnut oat and cashew coconut scribbles. “They’re not really a toffee and they’re not really a brittle. They’re almost a borderline candy/snack, I would say because they’re loaded with nuts. You get less of the candy and more of snack and feel like you’re getting an indulgence,” Rast explains. The engineering entrepreneur is always tinkering with new recipes to create great new flavors for the Nutwhats line. “There are a couple of new ones that I’m working on that I’ll probably

28

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2014

bring out in the fall…,” Rast states. The most popular Nutwhats varieties are the cash coconut scribble, salted almond scribble and the pecan scribble Nutwhats can be purchased online and are great corporate or holiday gifts, available in thoughtful gift boxes or in bulk. Retail locations include local Whole Foods and AJ’s Fine Foods, Phoenix Public Market, Bodega and Gilbert Farmer’s Market. “We have a specific retail box that we had designed to go on the shelf because our whole idea of expanding is to go into the retail and wholesale markets,” says Rast. “They’re packaged on the shelf in 6 oz. packages in a really cute box that is almost ‘gifty’ looking.” Rast recently returned from Chicago, where she took part in the Sweets & Snacks Expo and is now looking forward to further expansion of her nutty brand. SHARING DOWN SYNDROME ARIZONA BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal genetic birth defect in the world. In Gilbert, we have a wonderful organization that supports expectant and new parents and families of those special children born with Down syndrome. The organization educates, empowers, gives hope and promotes acceptance and understanding. Gina Johnson is the founder and executive director for Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona. ”I started reaching out to parents after David was born, but I started doing what I do in 1991,” says Johnson. She has a 30-year-old precious son, David, who was diagnosed with the genetic disorder and he has proven to be nothing short of a total and absolute blessing. Because she has been through the wide range of emotions experienced by the parent of a child with Down syndrome, Johnson is in a unique position to help guide parents on a loving journey that comes in caring for and being the parent of a child with this condition. The organization provides all birthing hospitals in Arizona folders with Down

syndrome and Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona information for social workers to provide to the parents of newly diagnosed children. Once the child is born, Johnson personally delivers a complimentary parent gift pack filled with books, DVD’s and CD’s about the condition. “There is a difficult emotional process to go through. But, what I love about that is that those tears of sorrow, before they know it, turn to tears of joy,” notes Johnson. Further support is offered to families with the arrangement of play groups for children with Down syndrome and their siblings, a comprehensive lending library, parent support meetings, quarterly newsletters, phone support, Angel Baby adoption, phone support and bereavement support. Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona partners with other service agencies for a full network of support for families and their children. “These kids hold an amazing place in my heart,” says Johnson. Every child and family is special, and she takes the time to personally visit and get involved with all of her families. As for

Register online to create your own team to walk in honor of someone who has Down syndrome. This is the largest fundraiser during the year for the organization, and it ensures that the many valuable support services remain free for families. When the walk is over at 11 a.m. there will be carnival-style game booths, bounce houses, obstacle courses, a rock climbing wall, music by DJ Ron, a silent auction, ice cream, Jamba Juice, snow cones and cotton candy.

HYPERHIDROSIS?

NO SWEAT! BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

The Cure For Those Unwanted Sweat Marks Under Your Arms Spring is in full swing and it’s HOT. We all sweat, what’s to be expected when temperatures are dancing in the hundreds. But for some, sweat interrupts life and causes insecurities. We want you to feel comfortable in your skin, and we found someone who can help … We had the opportunity to spend some time with Emily Tryon, Registered Nurse with certifications in neurotoxins, dermal fillers and sclerotherapy. Emily is an active Valley professional offering a treatment growing in popularity: Botox, for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. Emily gave us the skinny, with over 15 years of experience in injectables, and we’d love to share what we’ve learned with you!

Q. So, what is hyperhidrosis? A. Hyperhidrosis is basically a fancy name

for severe sweating. So many people are interested in having their underarms treated for excessive sweating.

Q. How does the Botox treatment work to suppress hyperhidrosis? A. Botox freezes the sweat glands. What

causes excessive sweating is hyperactive sweat glands, and Botox calms them! 32

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2014

Q. Who is a good candidate for this treatment? A. I am a Registered Nurse and I make that

decision. If you go to the gym and you work out and sweat and it’s irritating, you are not an ideal client. An ideal client is someone whose life is interrupted by their sweating. If it doesn’t matter what time of year it is and they still struggle with sweating, that’s the ideal client.

Q. What should someone expect at his or her first appointment? A. You come into the clinic, we get to know each other and we find out about your life and the difference I can make. I apply a numbing topical crème, then a round of 15 tiny injections with a teeny tiny needle in both armpits. Most clients say they can’t even feel it.

Q. Any restrictions when being treated? A. One thing I recommend is that you avoid certain

substances like blood thinning medications and alcohol. Those things can cause bruising in your armpit. Also, do not touch the treated area for about four hours. Don’t work out directly after injections!

SWAG FOR YOUR PET BY LISA LeCARRE

For a fresh spin on pet couture, visit Petswag, the online store dedicated to pampered pooches and cuddled kitties! Launched by Amanda and Doug Loback, a year ago, this duo has combined trends in the human fashion world, furniture design and architecture, to create the most relevant pet shopping store online. From comfortable beds, to traveling treat bowls to kitty collars, the most trending pet products, and unique pet designs are online at Petswag. While big box stores are great for providing staple pet products like food, Petswag’s product variety is unique, sometimes handmade or seasonal, offering design savvy with quality, and all while providing ease of ordering and accessibility for everyone. If Amanda and Doug wouldn’t put these products on their pets, or in their home, then they don’t sell it to their customers either. Moving to the Valley from Chicago, the Lobacks discovered that the type of modern products they wanted, pet products that integrated seamlessly into their home, were hard to find either in stores or online. Amanda wanted current designs and popular looks. “Our store is filled with traditional patterns, as well as prints that are more vibrant and colors that cross the spectrum, with a strong focus in design.” Doug believes that design is definitely the unique facet of Petswag’s products. “We want your pets’ products to add to the home rather than detract. We also want well built, solid quality items similar to the home products that you would buy for yourself.” Always fashion conscious, Amanda worked with a major retail cosmetic company and eventually branched out to open her own company. Her background in makeup and fashion, gives her an edge and a pulse on the hottest trends. “What 34

is in trend with people and fashion, is also in trend with pets.” The Found Rope Ombre Collars available at Petswag follow the current hair trend of starting with a darker tone and fading, through various shades, to a lighter tone. The collars come in a multitude of vibrant shades including Magenta, Teal, Indigo and Olive. Petswag also carries ombre leashes and harnesses. While the ombre hair fashion has not yet caught on in pet grooming circles, their darling Yorkie, Lucy, has the trend going on, naturally! Catering to the vibe of the Valley, Amanda said their store carries items that encourage pets and their owners to take advantage of the great outdoors. Sleepypod Yummy Travel Bowls are made of BPA-free silicon to store, transport and serve pet food and water simultaneously without spilling or mixing. Best of all, they come in thoroughly modern sun-drenched colors like Mango Tango, Sea Breeze, Key Lime and Very Berry. Petswag’s travel mats help keep pets cool even during the dog days of summer. These hemp and polyester mix mats, are lightweight, won’t add heat, fold up into little purses with a handle and are completely machine washable. They come stylishly designed in chilled, muted tones of grey, plaid and rose. Not only is Petswag trendy and fashion forward, they have the marketing talent to back it up. Doug works in digital marketing and had a marketing consulting business in the past. He ensures the website features modern imagery, is user-friendly and accesses popular search engines. Additionally, they support the U.S. economy with local products. “We have great experience working with the markets locally and about 80% of our products are US made. However, we were also excited about our global expansion with Petswag and being able to offer an international flavor for our customers.” Prior to launching their pet trendy store, the Lobacks searched for a dog bed with a structure more like a comfy mattress with eco-friendly qualities.

36

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2014

The Cloud 7 Sleepy Bed became the first items in their inventory and they found themselves working with another husband and wife team based out of Berlin, Germany. Petswag is the exclusive seller of these beautiful, European-style, sturdy, lounge-type beds, which feature an organic cotton cover that can be removed and washed. The Petswag product testers tend to the canine side, and are definitely the lucky dogs in this family. Fortunately for them, we regular folks don’t stand a dog’s chance of securing their swanky jobs. These specialists provide feedback via smell, taste, and romper room fun. They also reap the benefits of the Loback’s business. Dexter, the Loback’s black Labrador, loves relaxing on his Cloud 7, extra large bed, where the 90-pound Lab can stretch out after a long day of doging. Holder, the adopted Jack Russell, is motivated by toys, not food, and proudly offers you his Elton the Octopus rope toy for playing. Little Lucy, the Yorkie, prefers testing collars, carriers, and girly accessories. Fortunately, Petswag carries a BK Atellier luxury tote that resembles a purse rather than a pet tote. Yet, when Lucy is in the mood for a more casual style, the popular canvas beach tote is a great alternative. For the most part, Petswag shies away from flashy bling. Instead, favoring metallic fabric and stylish brass details for a more modern look. In January Amanda and Doug welcomed their baby boy, Jack, to the family. With a stronger focus than ever on healthy eating and knowing the origins of the food we eat, it’s good to know that one local farm is focused on providing healthy, naturally-grown, nutrient-rich produce in a system that is environmentally healthy and by folks that are passionate about what they do. Rhiba Farms was established five years ago. Since that time, founder Mark Rhine has developed methods for growing his good food using healthy practices and raising freerange chickens.

38

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2014

Rhiba Farms sells online and also provides product to various places in the community. “I do online sales... It’s an a la carte Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) so you can purchase online and then you pick up your goods at the drop locations,” Rhine explains. “Thursdays we do deliveries to our business customers, to Whole Foods in Scottsdale or our building in Chandler, the Gilbert Farmer’s Market on Saturday and also out at the ranch house, there is another drop location out there, too.” Rhiba Farms is one of the few farms that grows wheat grass locally.

Produce rotates seasonally. “The only thing I sell year-round is the wheat grass and the micro-greens, the shoots. Pea shoots, sunflower, even the broccoli, radish, arugula I don’t grow very much in the summer because of mold issues,” notes Rhine. The heat tends to slow things down at Rhiba Farms. Although Rhiba Farms is not a certified organic farm, they do use organic practices. “We have quite a mixture of different growing methods,” Rhine explains. “We grow with aquaponics. I raise tilapia, catfish, bluegill and some fatheads. I grow plants out of the aquaponics system- a lot of micro greens and leafy greens, lettuces, basils

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2014

and that type of stuff. It’s a re-circulating system. Traditional thinking is that you have 8-11 gallons of water that will go into a pound of produce. This is kind of a reverse thinking where we get about 8-10 pounds of food out of every gallon of water. We use the water over and over.” Essentially, the fish fertilize the water for the plants and the plants filter the water for the fish. Rhine also harvests the fish for himself and his family, but the fish are not for sale to the general public, unless someone wants to purchase them live and they possess a stocking license. Spirit Bar just opened at Cooper and Warner in Gilbert. The food-based health center also has a café and alternative and holistic health services and cares about their customers and their health. Owner Ray Florio originally met Rhine when taking a tour of Rhiba Farms, where the two struck up a friendship. “They fell in love with my produce. They did one of my tours and fell in love with the way that I grow food. For me, it’s all about nutrient density. I grow food to give the highest nutrient value possible to the food.” “I knew I wanted to carry his produce for the store because he focuses on the same exact things that we do, especially same clients for health and getting them healthy and helping them heal. Nutrient density, that’s the key,” states Florio. Spirit Bar will carry fresh

and nutrient-dense moringa, eggs that boast 12 grams of protein per egg and wheat grass. “We’re going to be one of the first customized nutrition stores that I know of. People can come in and get tested on the spot whether they’re with a health practitioner or not. They can see exactly what they’re nutritional deficiencies are and exactly which foods and supplements they need for their body type,” Florio explains. Spirit Bar will be open seven days a week. Rhine also does quite a bit of growing in soil and also does all his own composting. “At the ranch house we’ve been very successful at taking 20 year burned top soil and been lucky to return the soil to a somewhat of a healthy nature, at least about the first 11 inches of top soil. I’ve been able to grow thousands of pounds of really nice food out of there. It’s a long, slow process. It’s more of a passion than anything,” Rhine explains. Rhiba farms sells to quite a few people with health challenges and some that are even fighting cancer. Some of these patients have turned away from conventional Western medicine and gone to a raw and vegan diet. “They can’t get nutrient-dense food from a grocery store, so they have to find a local source in order to cure themselves,” says Rhine.

WE GET YOU THE

BIG

R E S U LT S YOU DESERVE “It’s really a heartwarming thing when I get to see these people weekly and their five and six years beyond their stage 3 or stage 4 cancer and they’re still up and walking and looking and living live and loving it. They’ve taken a complete turn and their entire health is different.” Rhine is repeatedly encouraged by those cancer patients who are surviving and thriving and he revels in the fact he can supply the right kind of food to those who need it and appreciate it. Rhiba Farms has been inundated with calls for their “Lettuce Turnip the Beet” shirt which has been a hot item. The back of the shirt also features a zombie chasing a farmer on a tractor with the saying “Eat Locals-Say No to GMO’s. “I saw it on Pinterest. It was completely different set-up… We kind of brainstormed and tried to put this whole thing together and I started selling the shirts,” says Rhine. “Then people started posting pictures of themselves in their shirts and we’ve really had a lot of fun with it. We had a gal last week from outside of Chicago she posted herself in a bikini and the whole thing just blew up.” Recently at Comicon, actor Michael Rooker was photographer next to a “zombie” wearing one of the now-famed shirts that are continuously in demand. Tours of the farm will start up again later this fall. Call Rhiba Farms for additional information.

If there’s one thing you can count on in the world of beauty, it’s change. What’s the new hot style? The best tools and techniques? Things are always evolving, and require constant education to keep up. Color

Ombre (with contrasting light and dark layers) remains popular. However, other colorlayering techniques have also gained in popularity. According to all the salons we spoke with, the idea these days is to go a bit more natural. Jennifer Butson of 20 Volume Salon points out that, whereas the layers in ombre are fairly distinct with the use of foils, the ballyage technique offers a much more subtle look; the layers of color are essentially painted on, resulting in a more smoothly blended effect. Going with brighter colors not found in nature is also a growing trend. According to Erwin, bright reds or pastels like lilac or pink have started to become popular, especially as highlights. That way, they provide an unexpected pop without the commitment of a complete dye job.

Cuts &

Styles Whatever else you might do to your hair, it all starts with the right cut. Long hair remains a perpetual favorite. According to Danellia Ingallina of Hair by Danellia, the appeal of long hair these days comes from its stylistic versatility and relative ease of maintenance. With one long hair style, someone can go from casual, beachy waves during the day and then transition to night with a loose, messy braid, sleek ponytail or other updo. If you’re trying to grow your hair out, Natalie Shake of Salon G & Spa points out that you should not forego trims altogether; you just might go a bit longer between trims, and have them be more frugal. This will help you to keep your hair healthy while still achieving greater length. To the same end, she also suggests using a split-end mender to fuse ends together between cuts. Rick Erwin of The Edge Salon agrees with the appeal of long hair, but also points out that more and more women these days are willing to go short. They are feeling adventurous and are inspired by celebrities chopping off their long locks in favor of short, textured pixie cuts and rounded bobs. The look is both playful and daring.

THE EDGE SALON

If you don’t like either extreme, Shake has also noticed a growing number of shoulder-length bobs. With these cuts, you are able to take off some length, but still have the option of pulling your hair back if desired.

Extensions

If you don’t have the time to get long hair naturally--or your hair is persistently limp--then your best bet is to get extensions. There are a variety of extension types, each with their pros and cons depending on the look you want and the type and condition of your existing hair. According to Butson, people who need fuller or longer hair right away (say for a wedding or other special occasion) often go with tape-in extensions because they lay flatter on the outset. However, clip-on bead extensions might be better for more long-term applications since they grow out a bit more gracefully. Or fusion-applied extensions could be indicated for a long-lasting and more natural look. Cold fusion, using a keratin-based polymer, is often used for fine or thin hair. Your stylist can help you choose the right extension application based on your needs.

Special Treatments Sometimes hair needs a little extra care to make the most of the aforementioned styles and colors. Again, the keyword is “natural.” People want their hair to look good, feel good and be healthy without harsh chemicals.

If your color needs a little refreshing, Ingallina recommends hair glazing. Glazing adds brilliant shine to hair and, if needed, a subtle tint that can help to make a smooth transition between colors. And, in order to make hair smoother and more manageable in general, techniques like the Brazilian blow-out, deep conditioning and keratin protein treatments have shown excellent results. They improve the overall health and quality of hair and can smooth out frizz without taking away volume. And they can actually be quite delicious. Shake describes a conditioning treatment that uses color-safe, sulfate-free brown rice to add protein and moisture to hair, while Erwin’s clients like a deep conditioning treatment that smells like a vanilla milkshake. Yummy. Thanks to all the salons that participated in this article. Contact them for more information on how to make these techniques work for your hair, and for other beautifying services.

Hair Loss?

Many of us take our hair for granted. We cut it, style it and color it as our whims dictate. But any hair care trends are pretty meaningless to those who are losing or have lost their hair. It can be a traumatic experience, and one that William Gaunitz understands all too well. When he began losing his hair at a very early age, he tried everything to stop the loss--Rogaine, Propecia, vitamins, special shampoos, etcetera. When those treatments didn’t work, in desperation he even considered surgery. That’s when Gaunitz discovered low level laser therapy, which was finally able to stop his hair loss and regrow his hair--and change his life. Today, he is a certified trichologist and, as of 2003, the founder and CEO of Evolution Hair Centers. His years of research have resulted in a proven way to give men and women their hair back. According to Gaunitz, successfully stopping hair loss and/ or reversing it is a multi-step process, one that addresses the body and mind as well as the hair. The first thing is to determine the cause. Hair loss--or alopecia--has a number of potential causes, including genetics, a compromised immune system, hormone levels, ingested toxins and other environmental pollutants, and even as a stress response to trauma. Finding the underlying cause of hair loss takes much of the guesswork out of the rest of the hair regeneration process. 99.9% of the time, there is a solution. Once the cause is pinpointed and addressed, topical medications, specialized nutritional supplements, etcetera can then be administered as needed to stop the hair loss. Once that’s accomplished, then regrowth can begin. The scalp is stimulated using laser light therapy, also known as cold fusion light therapy. Originally developed as a method for speeding tissue regeneration and combating diabetic neuropathy, cold fusion light therapy has also proven an effective non-surgical way to heal the scalp and stimulate hair follicles. Looking much like a hair dryer at a salon, the laser device focuses light as needed on the affected area(s) of the scalp. The exact intensity of the program is customized based on a client’s specific needs, with dramatic results typically seen within nine months. It’s just the remedy the follicularly-challenged have been waiting for. Evolution Hair Centers currently has locations in Tempe and Scottsdale in Arizona, and Beverly Hills and Woodland Hills in California.

SANTA MONICA

Santa Monica

BY ELIZABETH BORSTING

Life Really is a Beach at this Seaside Sanctuary Santa Monica offers sojourners the best of both worlds and is best described as equal parts sandy utopia and urban oasis. The city, which rests along L.A.’s coast, boasts nearly four miles of glistening beaches coupled with pounding surf and cloudless skies. On

the flip side, it’s got a city vibe littered with multi-starred restaurants, celebrity sightings and a plethora of designer boutiques. The city’s former mayor is none other than Kennedy-offspring Bobby Shriver. How many destinations can make that claim?

SANTA MONICA Still, what Santa Monica does best is provide a luxurious landscape for those yearning to be pampered. You’ll discover a mix of haute and historic attractions with lines often blurred as old buildings and relics receive new leases on life, resulting in swank surroundings and unexpected pleasures. An escape to Santa Monica can be simple or simply indulgent. Whether navigating a tandem bike along the paved oceanfront pathway or rubbing toques with celebrity chefs at the local farmers market, Santa Monica is proof that paradise has indeed been found.

Rustic Canyon Wine Bar & Seasonal Kitchen

If there’s one thing Santa Monica isn’t lacking, it’s good restaurants. The new darling to whet the appetites of restaurant writers is Rustic Canyon Wine Bar & Seasonal Kitchen. Contrary to its name, Rustic Canyon isn’t located in such a setting. The moniker is more an homage to founder Josh Loeb and the intimate dinners hosted at his nearby treehousestyle home. What he’s recreated through the talents of Chef Jeremy Fox is a menu of farm-to-fork favorites with communal tables for a shared culinary experience. The menu is seasonal and ultra-fresh with some quenchable crafted cocktails that are worthy of a toast. rusticcanyonwinebar.com What to Do: The great thing about Santa Monica is you can do as much or as little as you want. There’s the historic Santa Monica Pier with plenty of amusements and, of course, the weekly farmers market where foodies and celebrity chefs convene. A few of our favorite distractions include:

The Beach House combines elements of the historic Marion Davies Estate, including an original guest house and historic pool, with new splash pads and a gallery. Docent tours are also available. beachhouse.smgov. net Shopping: Shopping in Santa Monica can be likened to a sport, and the competition, at least for retailers, can be fierce. It all takes place in the open-air, multi-level Santa Monica Place, featuring such favorites as Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s, along with the likes of Kate Spade and Kitson. Adjacent to Santa Monica Mall is the Third Street Promenade, a wide pedestrian-only esplanade featuring wellknown brands, such as Anthropologie and Forever 21, along with some local favorites as well. Then there’s leafy Montana Avenue with its throngs of celebrity shoppers, one-of-a-kind boutiques, and never-ending parade of designer togs and luxury vehicles.

HIT THE SPOT! BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

The Spot in Gilbert’s Agritopia community is the spot. There is perhaps not another bistro/café that is as in touch with their customers as this cool place. Packed into 813 square feet (1000, if you count the cozy mezzanine) is a world of delicious homemade recipes that are prepared with love and enthusiasm by owners Brian and Tracy Kingdeski and their accommodating staff. From homemade breakfasts and scrambles and delicious freshly-made bakery items (don’t miss the cinnamon rolls and cake pops), to salads, flatbreads and signature sandwiches, The Spot has packed their menu with unique entrees, salads, flatbreads and selections for those who have sensitive diets. Brian has a solid background in the restaurant business. “I started working for a company called J. Alexander’s in Dayton, Ohio,” he explains. “I started serving, bartending, wound up training and then running some J. Alexander’s. It’s kind of like a Houston’s.” He also previously owned six Subway restaurants. “I wanted to do something on our own, so I took a combination of places that I’ve been and things that I like and created The Spot. I wanted something that was family-owned with large portions, good value and home-cooked food. It’s a lot of original favorites that people like and some with a twist,” he says. The Kingdeski children, Zach, Karli and Kendall, also enjoy pitching in >

and helping out with tasks at the restaurant. Together, the Kingdeskis enjoy making meals from scratch and getting to know their neighbors at The Spot. “We have great macaroni and cheese… And we have our own homemade chicken salad. We have a few special items that you just won’t find anywhere else. Our chicken sandwich and our steak sandwich… And our sliders have 12 different ingredients and are served on soft Hawaiian buns. Plus there are three different flavors of sliders,” Brian says about some of their most popular items. Breakfast is huge at The Spot. They’re really known for their “SOS” Spot On Stuff/ The Hangover, which is a hearty breakfast with seasoned Angus steak with sausage, sautéed onions, peppers, mozzarella cheese on Texas Toast and topped with gravy and two eggs over easy. If you still have room, it comes with a side of seasonal fruit. The Spot-style French toast is made with sweet cinnamon bread dipped in a luscious buttermilk batter and then topped with candied pecans and strawberries. Also, don’t miss the Big 58

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2014

Daddy Burritos, which are a generously-sized portion and come in three different varieties. The pastry chef at The Spot is also kept busy. “We always have cake pops, cupcakes and bars. The bars are what are unique to us. Tracy usually handles that part of it, so I just tell her to go crazy. She’ll have mint chocolate chip bars, peanut butter blondies, s’mores bars. She’ll do different ones and mix it up. She’s very creative,” Brian compliments. The dessert case is always a popular spot at The Spot, and the selection changes all the time. Being an active part of the neighborhood and supporting the local community is important to the Kingdeskis. “We use Shamrock as a distributor, our pastry chef is local, our meat company is Midwestern Meats, our bread company is Capistrano’s and we carry beers from San Tan Brewing,” Brian reports. “We’re a family owned business with large portions. Everything is made to order, it’s fresh, and there are things that we do that high-end restaurants do. It’s not the best cost for us, but those are things that are special and that we want to do for our customers.” “We have gluten-free buns from Gluten-Free Creations in Cave Creek. We go through more and more of that product all the time,” notes Brian. The Spot also has many other gluten-free menu selections, including the chipotle chicken sandwich or burrito, the

steak sandwich or burrito and the signature and freshly-prepared grilled chicken salad. A fun addition to The Spot is their delivery via beach cruiser that is offered within a ½ mile radius of the restaurant. Just call the spot to arrange for your cruiser delivery. Happy Hour is from 4-7 p.m. each day, and there are evening specials available every day from 6 p.m. until close.

IN SEASON WATERMELON

WATERMELON BY KADIE JEPSEN

Watermelon. Your mouth just watered a little, didn’t it? That’s because watermelon is delicious, especially on hot summer days when it’s been chilled in the refrigerator. The watermelon is believed to have originated in South Africa and was later grown by Native Americans in the 16th century. Since its global expansion, watermelons have captivated the masses with their juicy, sweet interior and nutritional benefits. There is only 6% sugar in a watermelon and 91% water, which can assist with dehydration during the outrageously hot 60

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2014

summer months. And, like many other fruits, it is a great source of vitamins A, B6 and C. The rind of the watermelon has nutritional benefits as well, but since they are unappealing to eat, most forgo that part of the fruit. In China, however, the rind of the watermelon is considered a vegetable and is stirfried, stewed or even pickled. However you choose to eat your watermelon, there are tons of health benefits, and the fruit itself is exceptionally tasty.    When you are about to purchase a watermelon, make sure it has a nice rich color, is firm and free

from bruises or dents, and has a yellow spot on the underside from where it sat on the ground. This yellow spot is what farmers look for before they pick their watermelons; it indicates that the fruit is ripe enough to pick. There are two different types of watermelon – with or without seeds inside. The seedless variety is a hybrid that was developed by watermelon breeders. Neither fruit is more beneficial than the other; selection occurs from simple personal preference.

Chris Isaak

July 19 In the course of Chris Isaak’s career, he has released fourteen extraordinary albums, twelve singles, been nominated for two Grammy awards, acted in several motion pictures and starred in his own critically acclaimed TV series. His legendary shows with his longtime band Silvertone have entertained tens of thousands of people for over two decades. Even his hair has its own fan club. Hits like “Wicked Game”, “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing” and “Somebody’s Crying” may be Chris Isaak’s best-known songs, however after more than a quarter of a century into his career, he finally created the album he’s always wanted to make. Now, at long last, Isaak has acted on this lifelong obsession, magically recapturing the transformative hepcat brilliance of the classic sides cut by these greats at Sun with Phillips during the mid-’50s, while also getting down to the heart and soul of his own deeply rooted musical identity. FINAL THOUGHTS

THE DIRTY WORK OF CAMPING BY KELLY POLLARD

I can count on one hand the amount of times I went camping when I was a child. My parents weren’t the outdoorsy types. I didn’t set foot in a national park until my college years. I married an outdoorsy guy that loves long backpacking trips and prefers campgrounds to my five-star beach resorts. Camping was an acquired taste for me. I love nature and big trees and vast stretches of water. However, I’m not crazy about certain things about nature. I despise mosquitoes, for instance, and they seem to have an incomprehensible lust for my blood. If any poison ivy sprouts on a trail, I will step in it and suffer from an angry, itchy red reaction. I don’t equate camping with relaxation. I go into these trips knowing full well that it’s a working vacation. Tents don’t magically pop up out of the dirt. Meals don’t cook themselves over a fire that

certainly doesn’t burst into flame without the work of hauling wood. Don’t get me started on dishes. Let’s just say paper plates make excellent campfire kindling. That is, if your park of choice allows fires. I think the reason why camping is such an American tradition is that it brings us back to the simple things. Everything is a means to an end. We lather up with sunscreen and load up our day coolers and fishing gear to go play in a body of water. We cook meals and roast hot dogs to replenish our bodies after playing outdoors all day. We do the dishes (or burn the dishes in my case) to move on to the best part of the camping experience: playing under the starlight. Since I started camping as a young adult and into these years as a mom, I’ll say that the time when the sun sets and the fire rises into the night are

"Let’s just say paper plates make excellent campfire kindling."

the best times outdoors. We gather around the campfire or across from each other at the picnic tables to play dice or cards, drink too much wine (my case) or soda (my kids’ case). And a camping trip isn’t complete without a late night visit from the park ranger with a firm warning to keep it down. That is our means to an end. The worst part of camping: the morning of the grand exodus. It’s the camp breakdown, where we attempt to sweep out our dirty tent and pack our grubby clothes and shoes into our cars to drive home and face a mountain of dirtiness to clean up before we are ready to face whatever home realities await us. Camping is worth all of that, whether we travel close to home or venture further to some national park in another state. It’s creating memories under the starlight to the music of owls and crickets and the splash of fish scheming to escape the fishing line. Camping is getting back to life simplified, a gift I love to share every summer with my family and friends.
