ay is my favorite time of year in the Valley. The breeze is cool, the sun is shining, and the scenery is bursting with lime green buds and fragrant flowers. Utilizing the perfect weather couldn’t be any easier with spring’s impressive lineup of touring acts, festivals and outdoor adventures. As usual, we’ve packed this issue full of fun happenings like the Cinco de Mayo and Peach Festivals, delicious eats from the Seafood Market, and a magical suggestion for your upcoming summer vacation.

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | MAY 2014

I remember being in awe of every mountain, cactus and desert plant I passed in my first months of residency here. Instead of becoming accustomed to the sights, my love for the uniqueness of the desert grew. So, obviously, I couldn’t be more pleased when I learned about the Desert Botanical Garden and all of its passionate supporters. This organization has precious beginnings… In the 1930s a Swedish botanist named Gustaf Starck corralled those as passionate as him by posting a sign that read “save the desert” in his front yard. Six years later the group formed the Arizona Cactus and Native Flora Society (ACNFS.) Together they worked to sponsor a botanical garden in hopes to showcase and educate on the beauties of the desert. The group found success in 1939, and the Desert Botanical Garden opened as a non-profit museum. Since then, the Garden has grown to be a staple in the community for both children and adults. The classes and programs offered today support the mission statement and dream created almost 75 years ago. In addition, the Garden has brought a unique element of entertainment to the Valley. Music in the Garden combines my two favorite things…the name speaks for itself. Catch one of the upcoming concerts… Enjoy a yummy dinner and a prickly pear margarita while you’re at it! I encourage you to get out and enjoy nature before the summer heat kicks in. We live in such a gorgeous area… and sometimes, because they are everyday sites, the beauty is minimized. But take it from me (an East Coaster) – get out, get active and fall in love with the desert all over again…

Country Girl

CHRISTIE HUFF BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Nineteen-year-old Mesa native, Christie Huff, is living out her dreams. The sweet, bubbly blonde has a full summer ahead: moving to L.A., releasing her second album, and establishing herself as a performing artist. Huff is still starry-eyed as she recounts the day that changed her life. “Producer Jeff Dayton heard me perform at a singer/songwriter convention in 2013, and he invited me to come back to Nashville and record an album!” she beams.

“That was the beginning of my journey,” Huff continues. “I was excited and nervous at the same time! It was a dream come true; never in a million years would I have thought a producer would approach me first. I’m still so flattered that he wanted to work with me. And am so glad we have become great friends.” The moment seemed surreal for the recent graduate of Mountain View High School. She soon traveled to Nashville and recorded her first album with Jeff Dayton (best described as Country/Pop) titled Sweet Love to Come Home To. Her decision to put college on the back burner and focus on her singing career opened doors almost immediately. Her childhood hobby was transforming into a lifechanging gift. As a child, Christie grew up singing songs from the musical Annie and performing for her family’s enjoyment. As she grew, she participated in junior high and high school talent shows and chorus ensembles. Christie looked to artists like Michelle Branch and Taylor Swift for inspiration, which, in turn, inspired her to pick up the guitar at age 14, with help from her older sister, Lezah. “I’m blessed,” Huff shares. “My family is very musical, supportive and talented. Lezah plays guitar and she has written some songs too. She’s 10 years older than me, so I really look up to her!” Although Christie discovered her love for music at an early age, she grew significantly as an artist during her senior year. “That’s when I started writing my own music,” she explains, “I’ve always dreamed of being famous, but senior year of high school really put things in perspective for me. My first half of senior year was spent considering different colleges and preparing for that, but then I said, ‘You know, I’m going to do this and follow my dreams!’” Her first self-written song, “The Soldier Song”, was inspired by a story shared at her student council meeting. A friend told Christie about her sister, a soldier’s wife, who had to say goodbye to her husband when he left to fight in Afghanistan. “Her story really touched my heart, and I started thinking about how it must feel to go through something like that,” Huff says. When she saw photos of the couple hugging goodbye she was inspired to capture those emotions through her first song. The chorus came first; she grabbed her guitar to play along, and “The Soldier Song” was created. Huff later traveled to Utah to shoot the music video for her first tune, which will be used as one of the official music videos of the GI Festival in Washington, D.C. in May. 18

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | MAY 2014

“Singing is where I got my confidence growing up.”

As her popularity grows, this sweet, grounded local plans to keep a level head. “For me, it’s all about music and entertaining people. I don’t want to be distracted from that.” For Huff, music has always opened doors and provided positive experiences, whether fueling her big move to L.A. or helping her establish herself during her teenage years. “I can remember when I started junior high and I didn’t know anyone. I heard about the talent show auditions, so I auditioned and was so surprised I made it! I was in every talent show and sang a solo in every chorus concert after that. For me, singing was the thing that made me stick out. After my first talent show in 7th grade, I believe that is when I started making friends. Singing is where I got my confidence growing up. I have dyslexia, and in junior high I didn’t want to be known as the girl with a learning disability. Instead, I was known as the singer,” Huff smiles.

As she looks to her bright future, she dreams of collaborations with artists like Katy Perry. “My sound is always going to have a little bit of county. Growing up in Arizona has affected my sound,” Huff admits. But, her second album debuting July 25th shows influences from many different genres, including pop and rock. Each of the 10 songs on the album is Huff’s original creation. Keep an eye out for this enchanting, talented little lady. Her genuine, kind spirit is just as beautiful as the powerhouse voice behind it.

20TH ANNIVERSARY

PEACH FESTIVAL

Schnepf Farms is celebrating 50 years of growing peaches

BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

CINCO DE MAYO BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

The fifth of May commemorates a staple in Mexico’s history--the 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. This specific victory is a minor holiday in the Mexican community, but has become a major celebration of Mexican culture in the United States. May 5th is a day to honor Mexican heritage and history through a variety of lively parades, mariachi music, street festivals and more throughout Mexico and the United States. Here in Arizona, we honor Mexican heritage in a variety of ways. In Phoenix, we celebrate with the 21st Annual Cinco de Mayo Phoenix Festival. One of the largest cultural festivals in the Southwest, this two-day family event is celebrated in the streets found between the skyscrapers of downtown Phoenix. Here’s what’s planned for this year’s festivities: Live music including GRAMMY® award winning musical performers and local band legends, USA Boxing Tournament, Ballet Folklorico and mariachi, a free viewing of the World Boxing Championship Title Bout (Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana), family carnival rides and games, traditional food and drinks, prizes, giveaways, and more! The annual festival is affordable and family friendly, offering free admission for children ages 12 and under, courtesy of Amica Insurance. $5 general admission tickets are available before 5 p.m. or online. General admission tickets increase to $10 after 5PM, with VIP ticket options also available. Head down to the city for an amazing celebration! Tickets are available at the event, or visit eventbrite.com to order online. FEEL THE FUN AT: CINCO DE MAYO PHOENIX FESTIVAL 200 E Van Buren St, Phoenix cincophx.com

with their 20th anniversary Peach Festival! Farm owners Carrie and Ray Schnepf smile as they remember the very first Peach Festival in 1994. “Back then, Queen Creek was a small little farming town, and we wanted to bring something new and fun to the community,” explains Carrie. So, Carrie joined forces with her mom and aunt, and together they started a tradition near and dear to the East Valley’s heart. The farm welcomed a few thousand people at the 1994 festival. The now-famous peach-inspired breakfast was made on a small griddle, four cases of peach preserves filled the sampling station, and hayrides were used to transport attendees to the peach orchards. “In an hour and a half, the peach orchard was picked clean!” says Carrie. After such a strong community response, the Schnepf’s decided to expand. Today, Schnepf Farm’s Peach Festival is a four-day event, welcoming thousands of attendees. They certainly outgrew the small griddle, and now serve over 3,500 breakfasts each morning! The four cases of peach preserves have grown to over 25 different peach samplings, and are considered a ‘must do’ at the festival. The orchard that was picked clean the first year now boasts five different kinds of peaches, all ripening at different times through the month of May. So, if you can’t make it to the festival, you can still enjoy peach picking anytime during open hours at the farm. But, make it if you can! This year’s festival is bustling with live music, train rides, carousel rides, the famous Peachy Pancake breakfast, Peachy Sampling Pavilion, water activities, peachy arts and crafts booths, peach pies, peach cinnamon rolls, peach cookies, peach cobbler and more! A DAY AT THE LAKE BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Lake days are finally here, and we couldn’t be more excited! Nothing beats a day spent basking in the sun and boating through beautiful desert scenery. Don’t own a boat? That’s okay… our local lakes provide boat rental options to get your summer going! SAGUARO LAKE Nestled in the Tonto National Forest, Lake Saguaro offers a perfect place to fish, eat and boat. Rent your own, or jump aboard the Desert Belle for a guided boat tour around the lake. The narration is both informative and entertaining, and the ride offers a relaxing and beautiful sightseeing adventure. On deck, enjoy snacks and drinks featuring beer, wine and soft drinks. If you’re interested in being captain, head to Precision Marina for full marina services with boat rentals, ship stores, fishing supplies and boat maintenance. Grab some good eats with a fantastic view at Lake Saguaro’s Lakeshore Restaurant. Just a short drive from Mesa, this restaurant offers a panoramic view that can’t be beat. Enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.

SUMMER

SKIN BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Summer is here, and it’s officially time for make-up less (but sunscreen infused) days by the pool. But, some of us might not feel so comfortable with our skins natural appearance. If you’re looking to ditch the foundation for silky, flawless skin, consider an IPL Photofacial. We met up with Kimberlee & The K Lounge to get the skinny on this amazing treatment… Q. Who is a good candidate for an IPL photofacial? A. This treatment is great for someone who has sun damage, uneven skin tone, rosacea or broken capillaries and wants to reverse their signs of premature aging in search of healthy looking skin. It is also very important that the client is not a sun worshiper, but rather is more socially in the sun and wears sunscreen of SPF 30 or less. Q. What does the laser accomplish during an IPL photofacial? A. The laser’s heat (light at a high energy level) causes organized damage – without injuring the skin – to the intended target, be it brown or red spots or broken capillaries. This stimulates the body’s natural healing response. The target will darken, then flake off or be absorbed by the body. Q. What are photofacial?

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | MAY 2014

Q. What is the treatment timetable? A. IPL photofacials can be performed three weeks apart or longer, depending on the client’s healing process. A client will usually need 3-5 IPL photofacial treatments dependent on their individual skin’s needs and how their body reacts to the laser. After this, a once yearly maintenance IPL photofacial can be performed, if desired.

hands were most likely caused by sun exposure in our younger years, with the exception of Melisma & Rosacea. The marks have probably been there a long time, just waiting to surface; this is one of the reasons they are hard to get rid of and take multiple treatments. Another reason the damage needs to be treated with multiple sessions is the darker the damage, the easier it is to target, thus the darker spots are removed first.

An IPL photofacial treatment feels like a rubber band snap – quick but the discomfort doesn’t resonate.

There are various types of Photofacials….The K Lounge provides IPL( Intense Pulse Light) Photofacials which is the best for treating -Sun Damage( brown spots/age spots)

Q. How often can someone receive an IPL Photofacial?

-Uneven skin tones( patches of hypopigmentation and/or hyperpigmentation or a mix of both)

A. An IPL Photofacial can be performed three weeks apart, or more, depending on the clients healing process.

-Rosacea( red blotchy patches on the face with some acne like effects mixed occasionally with visible blood vessels)

Q. Is there a “recovery time”?

-Broken Capillaries(aka spider veins… little red string like lines usually found on or around the nose & face)

Q. What does the treatment feel like?

A. No significant downtime or recovery time is needed. During and after the IPL Photofacial the areas treated may look slightly sunburned and the brown spots & broken capillaries may appear darker & more prominent; this usually lasts a few hours or on rare instances up to 3 days. Q. What else is important to know about IPL Photofacials? A. That the damage we see in the forms of brown spots, red spots & broken capillaries on our face and

ARE YOU

STRONG ENOUGH? Strength comes in many forms, attributes, descriptions, and even definitions. Webster’s dictionary defines it in 3 different ways: • the quality or state of being physically strong • the ability to resist being moved or broken down by a force • the quality that allows someone to deal with problems in a determined and effective way

We all have both inner strength (mental and spiritual) and outer strength (physical) and all 3 of the above definitions apply to each of these areas. Each of us are unique in how we express our strengths and we can all increase our strengths mentally, spiritually, and physically. The best way to do it is from the inside out. Being spiritually strong requires a solid foundation of belief and trust. Our beliefs and trust are the guiding light toward everything we want to accomplish. You must continue to believe even more when there are forces trying to break you down. Matter of fact, during tougher times is when your belief and trust should be at it’s highest. Prayer and meditation and surrounding yourself with others whom share similar 28

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | MAY 2014

beliefs are the best ways to strengthen your foundation and continue to push forward as you overcome obstacles. Mental strength comes from the discipline of actually doing what you set out to do. No distractions or excuses can get in your way. You must be determined to overcome any problems in an effective way. Experience and education strengthen determination. Learn from every opportunity and stay focused on your goals and aspirations. The decisions you make everyday determine the outcome of your life. Stay mentally strong by remaining focused on your foundation. Physical strength is not always noticeable and it is always attainable. Increasing your physical strength requires you to push beyond

your limits, increase your capacities, and ultimately, just do it. Being strong comes from the consistent repetition of moving more or doing more. Our bodies were not made to be stagnant and complacent. It is up to us to increase the demand and load we place on our body. The best way to do this is to workout, and even better, to work out effectively and with a purpose. Having a Coach and others around you motivates you and drives you to push harder and to get stronger. Resist complacency. Demand growth. How do you matchup to each of these definitions? What can you do today to get stronger? Build your foundation first. Strengthen the inside and the outside becomes even stronger. Strength powers us thru every day. Maximize every opportunity. Believe strong. Focus strong. Demand strong.

HOURS IN

DOWNTOWN MESA BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Mesa has really seen it all. From its early days to the current bustling residential community it has become, this area of the Valley is full of rich history. According to the Mesa Historical Museum, the first prehistoric people to live in the area were the Hohokams, who flourished for over 1,500 years before mysteriously disappearing in the 1400s. Mesa was back on the map in the late 1800s when the first pioneers of the area settled there. Today, the city of Mesa is a thriving desert community bounded on all sides by smaller neighboring towns. It is the 38th largest city in America and boasts a population of nearly 500,000. The only other city in Central Arizona that is larger than Mesa is Phoenix.

DOWNTOWN SCULPTURES

MAIN STREET Stroll down Mesa’s Main Street to visit the 38 sculptures on display. The fine pieces include unique works like The Big Pink Chair by Mary Consie of Mesa and Home Delivery by Phoenix native Steven Schneider. What’s nice about this art display is the ability to view the sculptures any time – day or night. Enhance your after-work walk with some art! (480) 890-2613, Downtownmesa.com

The negative ions bind with excess positive ions like bacteria, dust and allergens, producing easy breathing and a better night’s sleep. This shop has a beautiful assortment of lamps, varying in shape and tint. (480) 615-2700, himalayassaltlamps.com

270 W. MAIN STREET Il Vinaio, which means “the Wine Merchant,” is a quaint little spot capturing casual elegance with 70 beautifully stained glass windows. The building itself is a Historic Downtown Mesa landmark, newly remodeled to capture the past and present. The family owned and operated restaurant and wine bar is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. SOUTHWEST KIDS’ CANCER FOUNDATION Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks is a unique camp northeast of Payson that provides camp experiences to children battling cancer and to their siblings. It was a sad day last year when the American Cancer Society announced that after 30 years, it would no longer fund Camp Sunrise. Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation was founded to actively preserve the camp, raise funds to continue offering “dreams of summer” and provide an outlet for kids to temporarily forget their worries.

Stephen Ramey is the president of the board of directors for Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation. “I’ve been a volunteer for Camp Sunrise for 15 years. There’s also a group of counselors and staff that have been volunteers at the camp for quite a long time,” Ramey says. “Everybody that had been involved in camp for so long was trying to figure out how to keep the camp going.” The group got together and formed the 501(c)(3) organization. Camp Sunrise provides a true camp experience. “The camp is so crucial to these children’s lives. They are battling an illness that is obviously life-threatening and very serious. So often, these children have difficulty dealing with their scenario, and camp is that place where they can meet and befriend other kids who have or have had a similar situation,”

explains Ramey. “It’s an opportunity for these kids to find friends and companions that know exactly what they’re going through. They can share their experiences.” Camp includes fishing, crafts, campfires, typical camp activities and a notorious “Jell-o war” that they hold each year. The Sidekicks portion of camp is a way that siblings of children that are battling cancer can also participate in the camp experience. The main fundraiser of Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation is the “Dreams of Summer” Gala. Their inaugural event was held in February and was a resounding success, raising a little more than $38,000. The event was held at Ocotillo Golf Resort and featured a formal dinner, silent and live auctions, a presentation from current and former campers from Camp Sunrise, and was hosted by former Channel 12 sportscaster and host of “The Empowerment Team” podcast, Mark Lewis. There is also a grant committee at Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation. “But, the large majority of grants available out there require an organization

The dedicated people at Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation are committed to finding many fundraising avenues for Camp Sunrise. “When kids are battling cancer, everything about the family is focused on treatment and caring for the child and so often, they miss out on a lot of opportunities to just be a kid, and play is a huge aspect of camp.” Ramey concludes. VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | MAY 2014

BY LINDSEY RODRIAN The first Special Olympics Arizona competition consisted of a one-day Track and Field event with 100 athletes and 20 volunteers. Today, Special Olympics Arizona offers 22 sports, 170 programs in six regional areas, and five statewide competitions for the over 16,000 athletes and 12,700 volunteers on an annual basis. As Kali Knaack, Special Olympics

Arizona’s Marketing & Communications Manager explains, “We work so that we may realize founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s vision: to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities everywhere, and, in turn, transform the lives of everyone they touch – building a better, more accepting world for all of us.” VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | MAY 2014

Special Olympics Arizona is hosting their State Summer Games May 1-3 at Grand Canyon University. This year, over 1,300 athletes and 55 teams will be competing in activities like Track and Field, Tennis, Kayaking, Powerlifting and Volleyball. This is Grand Canyon University’s first year hosting the State Games and Tim Marin, President and CEO of Special Olympics Arizona, is excited for the new location, stating, “Special Olympics Arizona is very excited to hold our annual State Summer Games competition for the first time at Grand Canyon University this year. Grand Canyon University’s generous donation of fields, gyms and classrooms will allow Summer Games to expand and provide the athletes and volunteers an enhanced experience and help to further our vision for social inclusion within the community.” Prior to the State Games, athletes are required to train for eight weeks and participate in area competitions. There are six teams competing in this year’s games from regions covering Southern, Western, Northern and Eastern Arizona, as well as the East and West Valleys. The six teams compete in four activities, take part in opening ceremonies,

award ceremonies, banquet dinners and let loose on the field for a fun-filled after party. The State Games offer a place for the athletes to showcase their skills and hard work, bond with fellow participants and make everlasting memories.

In addition, the State Games participants take part in an amazing program that has positively influenced the health and wellness of Special Olympic athletes around the world. The program, Healthy Athletes, provides free health screenings in a fun, welcoming, environment in hopes to remove the anxiety often associated with doctor and dentist visits. The program focuses on seven different health issues common to those with intellectual disability, has a huge impact on the community, and saves lives by identifying and treating issues. As Karl Hejilik, Senior Manager, Health and Research Communications for Healthy Athletes reports, “Despite a mistaken belief that people with intellectual disabilities receive the same or better health care than others, they typically receive sub-standard care or virtually no health care at all.”

Despite a mistaken belief that people with intellectual disabilities receive the same or better health care than others, they typically receive sub-standard care or virtually no health care at all.

Special Olympics Arizona’s goal is to empower the over 180,000 Arizonans with intellectual disabilities to be healthy, productive, and respected members of society through SOAZ’s year-round sports training, competitions and support programs. Heartfelt, mindful programs like Healthy Athletes and the thousands of locals and employees who volunteer for them, strive everyday to accomplish the organization’s goal--and they do, with flying colors.

CHIHULY IN THE GARDEN Tucked between the lime green buds of May, garden explorers can find an additional beauty: Chihuly in the Garden. Artist Dale Chihuly returns to the garden until May 18th with his vibrant works of art. The American artist famously takes glass blowing to a new level with his massive architectural installations. His work is included in over 200 museums worldwide, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum!

As you walk through the garden, you’ll surely find yourself asking how these breathtaking works are created. The Garden holds true to their mission statement by providing an amazing educational film showcasing the history of Chihuly and capturing a live session to show the complexity of these creations. You’ll be in awe! Chihuly After Dark mixes art and entertainment with a live DJ, nighttime viewings of the installations, a cash bar, and a smallbites menu on Saturday nights until May. The Gardens also offers accompanying Chihuly fun-filled family friendly classes and programs that give tips for photographing glass and finding the perfect angle.

The Garden ignites at night with the Music in the Garden Concert Series. On multiple nights from February through June, music from acts like the DelRayz carry through the paths of the Desert Botanical Garden. This is another creative way the garden enhances our cultural spirit. As Amanda Ellis, Special Events Coordinator, notes “ The Garden brings a dynamic lineup to the Ullman Terrace stage each season, hosting a variety of talented local bands. The series provides the community with a unique opportunity to see local artists while enjoying the spectacular landscape of the Garden at night.” Music in the Garden covers a variety of genres, like blues, jazz, Brazilian and Spanish guitar. The series also makes a night of it, with dinner options, a full cash bar and boutique wine sales.

MAKING BOTANICAL HISTORY

A small group of dedicated volunteers first created the Garden, and thousands of volunteers tend to the beauty it is today. The passion of the botanists and experts keep the plants blooming and the community’s collective mind growing. Throughout the trails, you can find these dedicated volunteers at stations providing information on the plants and creatures of the desert. The Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Loop Trail encompasses almost two acres of colorful, sweet-smelling desert wildflowers. Wildflowers bloom all year, and can be enjoyed in any season, but the months of March and April are the most abundant. The second garden trail, the Desert Discovery Loop, showcases the unique beauty of the desert. Here you will find diversity of form, texture and color through the array of cactus and succulents from around the world. Within the Desert Discovery Loop is the Plants and People of the Sonoran Desert Loop trail, a showcase of the culture and history of the Sonoran Desert. You can also visit the amazing, seasonal Marshall Butterfly Exhibit and the Sonoran Desert Natural Loop Trail- a Ÿ mile trail with exhibits focusing on the plants and animals of the Sonoran Desert. Education goes beyond the garden paths at the Botanical Garden. A variety of classes, programs, tours and programs are available year-round, with multiple focuses for adults and children. 46

GARDEN BLOOMS

We spoke with Angelica Elliot, Landscaping and Gardening Education Coordinator, about all the beautiful blooms you can catch in May at the Garden. “The quote ‘spring showers bring May flowers’ isn’t necessarily true for desert dwelling annual wildflowers, but what is true is that May brings the two iconic desert plants: the saguaro and ironwood in full bloom,” Elliot explains. Saguaro - Look up to see the beautiful flowers blooming at the top of this cactus. The blooms open at dusk and close at 11 a.m., so be sure to visit the Garden in the early morning to catch them! Desert Iron Wood - The pink blooming flowers cover the canopy of the Ironwood Tree. Keep an ear out for the buzzing pollinators that love the sweet tastes of the Ironwood pollen!

FUNKTIONAL FITNESS 213 N. Gilbert Rd Gilbert, 480-503-2307 1655 W. Chandler Blvd Ste 1, Chandler, 480-855-0204 I am all too familiar with the challenge of losing unwanted pounds. Struggling with ups and downs, uncomfortable weight since graduating from college, I hit my all time heaviest September 2007, at 236 pounds. I had just started buying size 24 pants since my 22s were getting snug. I decided that I didn’t want to make excuses for my weight problem one more day. I had convinced myself that being a mom of three and sitting at a desk all day long was the reason I was heavier then I wanted to be. I hated not being able to run after my kids and not feeling comfortable to bend over and pick something up off the floor. I knew it was time for a change. I started my fitness journey with small goals and over a period of two years, that goal went from losing a few pounds, to losing a total of 100. The goal changed from feeling better about me to loving me! The goal also changed from longing to feel confident in the gym, to becoming a NASM certified trainer in 2009 and not just feeling confident but actually becoming athletic. We were just twelve years old, yet the general’s son and I rode our horses through the Panamanian jungle freely and oblivious to dangers or rules. Upon reaching a clearing, we spotted the prized mango grove a hundred yards ahead. We stopped at one of the low hanging branches, dismounted, and climbed high enough to find comfortable seating. And then the feast began as we ate mango after mango with thick juices running down our faces. The horses foraged below and soon mango juice mixed with saliva dripped profusely from their mouths to the jungle floor. What does this have to do with orthodontics? Perhaps nothing . . . but Dr. Tipton loves adventure and always has a great story to tell of his youth in Panama, Japan and Texas, a church mission to Argentina, dental humanitarian missions to Tonga, Honduras and Mexico and an occasional story of his father’s imprisonment for a year in Germany during World War II. Maybe the relationship to orthodontics is that orthodontic treatment is also a great adventure for both Dr. Tipton and his patients. The journey from misplaced teeth to a beautiful smile is laden with wonderful surprises, culminating in improved function and a confident and attractive appearance. Come on in for a complimentary evaluation and excellent treatment in an honest and caring atmosphere. And along the way you may hear a story or two. I would love to hear yours. SEAFOOD

MARKET RESTAURANT BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

Since 1991, Seafood Market Restaurant has been a staple in the East Valley, serving quality seafood with the highest standards of purchasing, preparing and serving. In addition to the large selection of seafood on the menu, customers are also welcome to shop at their fresh seafood counter right inside the restaurant located in Dana Park Village. Owners Pablo and Marie Reynoso had two previous locations in Mesa before settling in at Val Vista and Baseline eight years ago. “A lot of people think it’s just the name of our restaurant,” Pablo says, “but we do have a small market here, too. A lot of the seafood items on our menu can be purchased here, but I don’t want to compete with the grocery stores. Instead of having every seafood item in the world, I focus on quality.” Even if a guest has a special request for a particular kind of seafood, Pablo will be happy to arrange to have it brought in to the market. “We buy fresh fish every day, and there’s always the chance to try something new.” Many years ago, Pablo owned a seafood wholesaling business and has always had a knack for quality seafood. Prior to that, he spent many years as an executive chef for a large seafood-based restaurant chain. He has served in many positions in the seafood industry and brings that expertise into his own restaurant every day. “Our seafood comes from all over – East Coast, West Coast, the Northwest and other countries,” he notes. “The Chilean sea bass comes from Chile, and the roughy comes from New Zealand.” Seafood Market Restaurant boasts separate and expansive lunch and dinner menus. “Items-wise they’re exactly the same, but different prices and different portions. FOOD SPOTLIGHT

Inspired by his parents and in keeping with the family culinary tradition, Pablo Reynoso, Jr. has recently opened So Cal Fish Taco Company. Located in historic downtown Gilbert, the restaurant carries its own unique concept, but with the same high quality and great service those at Seafood Market Restaurant have come to know and love. The beautiful restaurant décor is spacious, light, airy and reminiscent of a seaside restaurant on the wharf of San Francisco. Pablo has brought the fresh and authentic flavors of quality seafood to the East Valley, and customers can’t get enough of the excellent prices, outstanding service and great seafood at this award-winning seafood establishment.

For example, for dinner you have the choice of clam chowder or salad. But for lunch, entrees do not include the soup or salad.” The menu variety is exceptional. “I would say the fresh salmon and the cod are two of our most popular dishes…and the shrimp,” he adds. “Shrimp is an international language. Everyone knows shrimp and even if you don’t like seafood, you usually like shrimp.” Other entrees include fried oysters, snow crab legs, lobster tails and live whole Maine lobster. “We also have some specialty sandwiches on the menu,” Pablo explains. Sandwiches on the menu include a classic po’ boy, a salmon, oyster or chicken club, or traditional burger. If a guest has a hankering for something other than seafood, there is also a selection of pastas at Seafood Market Restaurant. For the youngest guests, there is also a kids menu, and some

72

adult entrée items are also available in kid-sized portions. For those who enjoy a taste of Mexico, Seafood Market Restaurant has fried fish tacos, tacos de Cabo, La Paz enchiladas (with shrimp or crab) or tacos de camarone on the menu for a different taste sensation. Because Seafood Market Restaurant has been in the East Valley for so long, many of their customers are like family and have come to know Pablo and the staff as family. “Our service here is always great, and we’re always happy to see our regular customers and new customers,” he says. “Normally, I work the front of the house and oversee kitchen operations, but as far as the menu and the sauces go, I have chefs that have been with me 20 and 25 years. They create dishes sometimes. It is good self-respect.” They do spend time testing out new dishes and recipes.

IN SEASON BOYSENBERRIES

BOYSENBERRIES BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Resembling a big underripened blackberry, the boysenberry is actually thought to have descended from a wild blackberry species crossed with a giant raspberry. Native to the Pacific Coast from Oregon to Southern California, it’s one of several American species of dewberries (blackberries that grow along the ground rather than upright) that was domesticated starting in the late 19th century. Although named after grower Rudolph Boysen who is thought to have originally cultivated the species, it was Walter Knott of Knott’s Berry Farm who first commercially cultivated the boysenberry and started selling them at his farm stand in 1932. When people kept coming back for more, his wife 74

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | MAY 2014

began putting them in pies and canning them to make preserves, which is what eventually made the farm famous.   This particular species of berry has a long history with many California growers. Once grown on thousands of acres of Golden State farmland in the 1950’s, that number has dwindled significantly to under 70 acres today due to a number of factors including an exceptionally short growing season (late May to early July), susceptibility to fungal diseases, and an inability to ship them without damage due to their soft, thin skin. Ripe boysenberries begin to leak juice and rot within a day or two of being picked, so many

are harvested early and shipped to grocery stores in an underripened state reddish in color and tart to the taste. For the best taste experience – a blend of tart and sweet – get yours from your local farmers market or farm stand, or try growing your own. Packed with strong flavor, these juicy, dark purple berries contain potassium, vitamin C, and other essential vitamins and minerals. While fresh or frozen boysenberries offer the most nutrients, many commercially grown berries are canned to make preserves or used in juices, pies, syrup, yogurt, and ice cream.

Boysenberry Cobbler INGREDIENTS:

(Batter) 1 cup flour • 1/2 cup sugar • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 Tbsp soft butter • 1 egg slightly beaten • 3 Tbsp of milk (Berry Mixture) 1 1/2 Tbsp cornstarch • 1/3 cup sugar • 4 cups boysenberries 1/8 cup water • 1 Tbsp butter • 1 Tbsp lemon juice DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. In a saucepan mix cornstarch, sugar, and water. Add berries and cook on medium to medium high heat until mixture is thickened, about 15 minutes. Add butter and lemon juice. Pour into an 8” baking dish. 3. Prepare the batter by mixing all of the batter ingredients and beating with a spoon until the batter is smooth. 4. Drop the batter over the berry mixture. Bake 25-30 minutes at 350°F. Let cool. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

WINDOWSILL

HERB GARDEN BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

A windowsill herb garden is the perfect way to get your green thumb going. Popular herbs like basil, oregano, mint, chives, rosemary, dill and thyme can prosper in small containers or even mason jars. Start with just a few herbs at first, and see how it goes. It is important to monitor each for their specific sunlight and water needs. If you see any wilting or yellowing, consider adjusting the placement of the plants so each gets what is needed to flourish. Choosing a good, organic fertilizer and potting soil are also important aspects in cultivating the best herbs. You can choose to start with seeds or purchase plants (beginners have better luck with plants), and enjoy the availability of fresh, delicious smelling herbs right in your kitchen. In 2008, Journey introduced a new singer to the world, Arnel Pineda, with the release of their 14th studio album (“Revelation”) and an extraordinarily successful world tour. It was the latest chapter in a rock ‘n’ roll saga that started more than 35 years ago and has produced some of the best-known rock songs of the 1970s and ‘80s. Go back in time with one of the best bands of the 80s and of course, the Steve Miller Band, an American rock band formed in late 60s in San Francisco that encouraged us all to “Fly like an Eagle.” Ak-Chin Pavilion, 2121 N 83rd Ave, Phoenix, (602) 254-7200, livenation.com

FINAL THOUGHTS

Jumping Summer INTO

BY KELLY POLLARD

The final bell rings toward the end of May, and the students come screaming out of the schools. If you don’t have kids, you will still feel the ripple waves of thousands of students on the loose across the city. Starbucks is no longer yours as teens with extended curfews crowd you out of the tables. If you are a parent like me, this can be both a relief (no more tests! no more homework!), or a moment to cause a panic attack. Since I’m also lucky enough to work for a school district, I too get a break from the regular work day. My kids are free from homework. I can let my slacks and skirts collect mothballs in my closet for a few months while I live in bathing suits and yoga pants. Summer means staying in pajamas until noon and feeling mildly embarrassed when the neighbors see me fetching the newspaper in my bathrobe at two o’clock. Summer also means that my sons and I turn into gym bums. Sounds like a contradictory term, but I own it. 82

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | MAY 2014

A typical day last summer break meant arriving at our gym at eleven, me working out to sweat out the margaritas and Mexican food from the night before, then slipping into my swimsuit to lounge by the pool for hours with a scandalous novel while the kids swam and endured constant attacks with sunscreen sprays. Did I mention that my gym allows us to bring wine? I’m stocking up now on the plastic wine glasses and sports drinks for the kids. We bask in this country club lifestyle of the sunburned and tipsy variety. Summer break also means binge-watching television marathons. With no set schedule, I happily watch trash TV past midnight when I have full control over the TV remote after the rest of the family has long gone to bed. Due to my inappropriate viewing choices and lack of a work schedule, I even have the valid excuse of sleeping in longer than my kids after a late night date with Zinfandel and Game of Thrones.

Summer means plenty of heat and smoothie season in our household. I pump the kids so full of fruity healthiness that they are too sugared up to realize it’s actually good for them. Perhaps giving my blender prime counter space for the next few months is so that it’s that much easier to whip up batches of margaritas. The beauty about our schedule is that summer starts in our household a whole month before it’s officially summer solstice. Temperatures are still somewhat mild and those bike rides and springtime hikes are doable before the streets are scorched by the crazy heat of July. Glorious are the days with no school projects or work deadlines. Heck, I don’t even cook dinner half the time. By Memorial Day weekend, my household will already be settled into summertime sloth days. We embrace the lazy, unscheduled mindset, the late nights and the late mornings. Cheers to smoothie and margarita season!
