You have one life to live, live it well. Jamie’s Story Jaime, age 42, came to Protea Medical Center after suffering for seven years from depression, insomnia, and anxiety. Her symptoms began after giving birth to two children over three years. Since her last pregnancy, Jaime’s menstrual cycles had been irregular. She gained 25 pounds over seven years and had difficulty losing weight. She had lost all sexual desire as well as confidence, and felt that she was in a downward spiral.

Medical Why CVD?Center,

Within moments of her consult, the doctor developed a preliminary assessment of Jamie’s condition. As he explained, Jamie’s name could easily be replaced with the names of thousands of

other women seen in our clinic: women between the ages of 30 and 50 from all walks of life and careers, anxious to restore their well-being. Jaime’s previous physicians made her feel that she was a high maintenance, emotionally inadequate hypochondriac. At Protea, we explained how her symptoms were common to women her age and that she was not alone. Best of all, these symptoms were easily treated. Jaime was experiencing an imbalance in her female hormones that adversely affected her body’s ability to function, leading to insomnia, depression, anxiety and fatigue. Jamie’s hormonal irregularity created a perfect storm of imbalance within her body. After her initial bloodwork returned to the clinic, the doctor set up a customized treatment plan based on her results. He prescribed bioidentical hormones and natural thyroid supplementation, as well as weekly vitamin injections to combat her fatigue.

Our nutritionist counseled her to try foods rich in anti-oxidants and vitamins to help restore her vitality. She was put on a personalized diet plan specific to her needs. Within two months, Jaime’s depression and fatigue disappeared. She discontinued her antidepressants, lost ten pounds, and felt energized. She told us, “I have not felt this good in years. Thank you for giving me my life back!”

Dentistry Done

Differently!

What if there was a place you could go where you could get crowns done from start where industry-leading dental innovations were created; where everything from usual to complicated dentistry is routine; and where the dentist himself is sought after nationally and internationally to discuss the latest techniques and innovations in dentistry? There is—and it’s right in your own backyard. absolute cutting-edge in dentistry in order to make your visits as short, easy and painless as possible. When Dr. John A. Garza, a licensed general dentist, envisioned opening the location 13 years ago, he vowed to create a locale that was someplace he would want to go if he were the patient. He wanted to create a place that was co-diagnostic and interactive, and where the patient themselves would be able to make a decision about their dental care based on what they were shown could be done via the latest interactive technological tools.

offered are digital ones, which reduce patient doses of radiation by 98%, and computers at the side of each chair so patients can view the x-rays (and other images) along with the dentist. Some patients joke that “it’s like NASA here!” And that’s a good thing. “For example, with our smile makeovers, it takes about three hours to do an 8-tooth makeover. There are TV screens over the patient’s head playing movies, and throughout allows the patient to leave with color, shape and teeth that they want. And because we’re doing it together, they end up with a custom smile, rather than one where a remote lab technician is making the same thing for everybody and you’re hoping that what is sent back for you is what you want. With this technique, the patient is very involved, and we’re able to tweak it as we go,” Dr. Garza explains. The one-visit solutions are possible thanks to the CEREC by Sirona Dental Systems. It’s the world’s only system for the fabrication of all ceramic dental restorations in one busy schedule for dental care! Dr. Garza is also the creator of The Crane, an innovative and industry-changing tool that removes a crown and bridge without the pounding tools dentists used previously. His expertise regarding this device and his extensive knowledge in general is called upon often in a speaking capacity, and he has taught and given lectures everywhere from overseas to nationally at places like the University of Oklahoma and the Southwest Dental Convention. So whether you need a routine cleaning, a root canal, crown, or complete smile makeover, don’t you owe it to yourself to put yourself in the hands of one of the industry’s most respected dentists, at a trusted location that offers the most cutting-edge technologies and services so that you have the easiest and most advanced dental care possible?

MELIS ACCESSORIES JEWELRY THAT ROCKS! Over a decade ago, Melis graced the fashion industry with her custom, hand-made accessories. She debuted her latest creations of bold leather and rustic metal pieces during Phoenix Fashion Week in the fall of 2012. Her beautiful, unique designs created a significant buzz in the Valley’s fashion industry. We can’t wait to see what she’ll be bringing to the run way this year...

Hailing from Dallas, Melis ventured to Arizona after high school. But, this Arizona resident has kept a stong hold on her roots. Her passion for the Southwestern lifestyle hasn’t diluted. She takes the clearly country and southwest influences of her childhood and infuses it with eclectic, Rock and Roll inspired jewelry, bringing Melis’ line a unique flair unlike any other we’ve seen.   One of many ‘rocking’ aspects of this line: every single piece is handcrafted and created by Melis. From her multicolored rings and “Journal Cuff,” to her necklaces, and soon, headbands, Melis meticulously creates one of a kind pieces. From inspiration to the finished product, each item is unique. No two items she designs are ever created equal, so when you own a signature Melis Accessories piece, you can be sure that there will

20

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2013

never be another exactly like it! Now, that’s cool!    Our favorite is the incredibly creative “Journal Cuff”. Melis uses quality leather in every color and pattern to design these oneof-a-kind bracelets. You wrap the cuff around your wrist and use the suede cord to secure it tightly, just like you would a beautiful antique journal. The hidden beauty about each of these bracelets? You can add a personal touch with writing to the underside of the cuff. Perfect for an anniversary gift, (they come in men’s sizes, too) or a present for a graduate, the added personalization makes it all the more unique.    Another favorite is her Rustic Metal pieces. Each necklace features a hand-struck piece of metal, with designs ranging from popular crosses and hearts, to rhinestone embellished dog tags. These necklaces come on your choice of chain length, to create a fun, layered look, or rest perfectly where you desire.    Melis’ items can be found on

the runways again this fall, as she debuts her newest creations during October’s Phoenix Fashion Week. And if you’ve got to get your hands on one of her adorable leather rings or her amazing stone, corset wrapped bracelets, you can find her lines sold in a few boutiques across the Valley.    “My tag line is ‘Bring out your inner rock star,’” Melis smiles, “because in all of us, even if we don’t think we have it - there’s a bit of a Rock Star. And the pieces I have, whether you wear one or twenty, will make you feel a little more edgy and unique.”    We think so too, Melis. And we’re thankful that someone out there is calling that inner rock star to shine a little brighter.

Jessica Cuff and Jenna Flowers of The Coffee Shop have a corner on the Valley’s gourmet cupcake market. Ever since the duo won Cupcake Wars on the Food Network back in 2010 (and appeared again in 2011 and 2012), it’s been a non-stop cupcake love fest at their hip and uber-fashionable Gilbert restaurant/coffee shop.    Each day, customers at The Coffee Shop in Agritopia are greeted with all sorts of outlandishly delicious cupcakes and the variety changes daily. Some flavors are Lemon Glam, Vanilla Glam, Berry, Peanut Butter Chocolate, Coconut, Red Velvet and seasonal cupcakes like Pumpkin, Rum Raisin and Peppermint White Chocolate. Jenna has even created vegan Cruelty-Free Cupcakes in varieties like Samoa, S’more, Strawberry Shortcake, Gingerbread and Espresso Buttercream.    The signature cupcake that won Cupcake Wars in 2010 was the “Coffee and Cigarettes” cupcake made with tobacco leaves and topped with “ash” (baking cocoa/powdered sugar). Tobacco can be used in baking the same way that lavender can. This variety has a vanilla/cinnamon type flavor and those specific cupcakes can be special ordered in advance (72 hours notice, please).    Customers will also find scones, muffins and whoopee pies (hint-get the lemon) that are so flavorful, they are literally in a league of their own. The treats are stellar, but be sure to try the coffee and tea drinks, salads, sandwiches and even breakfast burritos, too. In each instance, they’ll be served to you in style. You can also find The Coffee Shop cupcakes at Nordstrom’s at Chandler Fashion Center. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

MESA ARTS CENTER FALL ART PICKS BY MARLENE MONTANEZ

As soon as the lovely weather starts to roll in, so does the arts and events season in the Valley. And with so many great options to choose from, it can be hard to know where to begin! Luckily for you, we’ve narrowed down a few top picks of must-see events this season, starting with The Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, performing at Mesa Arts Center September 15.

The Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club

“The Buenavista Social Club is by far one of the most important shows we are doing this season,” says Director of Programming for Mesa Arts Center, Randy Vogel. The Grammy-winning group created a Cuban music revolution in 1997 and had several international tours and even an Oscar-nominated documentary filmed. The sensational performance includes several of the original group members that’s sure to bring back memories for many. “It’s the first time that these musicians have been permitted back into the country because of all the political issues we have with Cuba,” Vogel says, “It’s really incredible.”

Foodies won’t want to miss Alton Brown’s Live Inevitable Edible Tour on October 20 that, just like his award-winning show, Good Eats, is sure to surprise and get a laugh or two. And if you’re looking for a great family outing, you won’t want to miss the Dia de los Muertos Festival Oct. 26- Oct. 27. The event is free to attend and will have loads of surprises, educational activities, entertainment, jewelry and arts and crafts vendors, food and two stages of live music.

peratures are still sweltering. But, our favorite shopping destinations have already started rolling out their fall collections. Let’s take a look at what’s in store for fall fashion.

WHAT’S IN FOR FALL? Outfit-making coats and classically cut blazers are in. Prints are starting to make their way into more subdued patterns. Pick up a great pencil skirt in a hound’s-tooth pattern, or a herringbone blazer, signaling that summer is over and fall as arrived.

A MUST-HAVE ACCESSORY? A great hat! This season we’re seeing beautiful headpieces gracing the runway, accompanying some of the trendiest outfits. From beanies and fedoras, to floppy knitted hats - try snagging up a few for those days you just don’t feel like doing your hair! Adding a hat to an outfit has always been a tell-tale sign that autumn is coming.

HOW ABOUT THIS SEASON’S HOTTEST COLORS? Jewel tones are always in for the fall months. For Fall 2013, emerald green is the go-to gem inspired hue! Emerald is a rich, yet vibrant color and can be both dressed up, and down, for any occasion.

SSA

His pieces are ones worth investing in, as they will last you a long time, and can weather all the fast flowing fashion trends. As far as designer’s to keep an eye on, ADEAM by designer Hanako Maeda (based in Tokyo) showcased her collections for the first time in NYC for Fashion Week. She’s getting quite the buzz from fashion followers. Though her pieces are still mostly Asia based, here’s crossing our fingers that she will soon open up boutiques stateside!

WHERE TO SHOP LOCALLY? My favorite local department stores are Dillard’s and Nordstom (Dillard’s at SanTan Village and Nordstrom at Chandler Fashion Center). I also really enjoy checking out local boutiques, as you have a better chance of finding items that cannot be purchased elsewhere. Some of my favorite local boutiques are One Wing in Chandler, Junky Trunk in Gilbert, and Apricot Lane, also in Gilbert. I’m also pretty loyal to the GAP Co. brands, Banana Republic, GAP, and Old Navy. They have great, sturdy pieces for the whole family!

FAVORITE DESIGNER? DESIGNER TO WATCH? My go-to designer for all things classic has got to be Marc Jacobs. He knows how to balance the classic with the feminine, always with a touch of whimsy. 26

THE ULTIMATE TANNING EXPERIENCE BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Almost everyone has watched the ‘Friends’ episode that leaves Ross very brown, and terrified, of spray tanning. As hilarious as that episode is, it scarred many viewers, myself included! So, when I walked into Platinum Sol Tanning Loft’s cozy, contemporary front office, I just had to get the low-down on achieving a beautiful glow; without the worry of catching yourself in a mirror, and holding back a scream. “I’ve had a horror-story spray tanning experience,” laughs owner of Platinum Sol, Klaire Oekerman. Her hesitation is great news for us! Klaire’s negative experience resulted in extensive research on spray tan beds and products before choosing one for her company. Her choice, Norvell Auto Revolution with iNTELLiSpray. This system is as close to custom air brush as you can get. Offering 6 colors and 3 levels, you will never be left looking orange. I stepped into the Norvell machine and giggled as the computer voice told me to bend my legs slightly and raise my right arm… or did it say left arm..? AH! About 10 minutes later I came out evenly tanned, dry, and glowing. It was a lovely tanning experience, I’m hooked! And well, let’s be honest, everyone looks better with a nice tan! It’s great for your complexion and somehow makes everyone appear fit. It’s magical! We have all read warnings about the sun, and have been advised to protect ourselves. But, Platinum Sol beds do not emit cancer causing UVC rays, and the UVA and UVB rays are controlled, making it safer than sun bathing by 32

the pool. Another plus, these beds are climate controlled. Who says you have to sit in 100 degree heat to get a tan? Along with climate control, the beds offer aroma misting, shoulder tanners, UVA oxidizing face bulbs, and a stereo system. Platinum Sol Tanning Loft offers great discounts, and monthly memberships. New members receive 10 percent off of their 3 month membership. The memberships include the Platinum, Prestige, Inspiration and Passion levels, all offering membership to different beds, including the spray tan system. For those purchasing 10 or more tans, Platinum Sol is offering 30 percent off your purchase, too! While spending time with Klaire, and getting my glow on, she also talks about the importance of moisturizing and caring for your skin. Healthy skin is crucial to achieving and keeping a great tan. The front counter of Platinum Sol Tanning is stocked full of top of the line products. These lotions, including accelerators, bronzers, tingles and tan-extending moisturizers, are the perfect accompaniment to your glow.

EVOLUTION

H A I R BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Upon meeting William Gaunitz, founder and CEO of Evolution Hair Centers, my eyes were immediately drawn to… his hair. Partially because it’s a great head of hair, and also because I spent some time browsing his company’s website. There, I stumbled upon a picture of William in his twenties. The hair line I was subconsciously evaluating couldn’t possibly be an older version of the one I saw online. But, it was. “At that time, my hair was literally falling out in clumps,” explains William.“I tried treatment after treatment, and doctor after doctor, until I found a solution.”

The solution: Sweden’s original Harmonix Laser. William’s weekly treatments rendered significant results, inspiring him to become involved in laser therapy and Trichology, the study of hair loss. The laser that produced such amazing results for William was unable to be imported to the United States. Driven to work with this high-end product, he spent a year negotiating exclusive rights for the U.S. Successfully obtaining the rights allowed William to begin constructing his custom treatment approach. The lasers, now built locally, are the foundation of the Evolution Hair treatment. These lasers are FDA approved for wound healing, cellular regeneration and reduction of inflammation. The 635 nanometer diodes are the most credible and researched wave length period. Involved in every aspect of his treatment plan,William created his proprietary line. The advanced Trichology brand consists of anti-inflammatories, organic hair care products, nutritional supplements, all-natural topicals, and liver and kidney detoxifications. His multi-therapeutic approach detoxifies the body, nourishes the scalp, and stimulates hair growth. A free consultation at Evolution Hair Center will put you face to face with this Trichology mastermind and entrepreneur. After William examines your scalp and pin points your personal goals, he will create a custom plan to restore your hair and scalp. Your personalized plan could include anything from weekly laser treatments, to vitamins and shampoos, depending on the severity

of your hair loss. William will also assist you in discovering your internal hair loss contributors, such as possible immune conditions, medications, hormonal balances and diet. Successfully rebuilding the follicles and confidence of men and women spanning ages 18 to 85, William’s approach to hair regrowth cannot be denied.

TREATMENT OPTIONS: For Fine and Thinning Hair This program promotes thicker and longer looking hair while cleansing the scalp. Forget hair extensions, this treatment will give you the hair you’ve always dreamed of. Ultra Program (Stop excessive hair loss and regrow hair) This 9 month laser treatment program is for the person who wants to stop their excessive hair loss and regrow hair. Luxe Program (Intensive hair regrowth and scalp rejuvenation) Recommended for people with hair loss that has persisted for less than 7 years, The Luxe Program will allow the client to stop their hair loss and regrow a visible amount of new hair in a short period of time. Super Program (Maximum hair regrowth). The most advanced and comprehensive program lasts nine month, and is typically recommended for those who have experienced more than 7-10 years’ worth of hair loss and are looking for maximum hair regrowth.

BLASTING GOALS BY JEREMY JONES

As the calendar turns to September, we know that we are 1 month closer to the best weather in the country. However, anyone who has lived in Arizona for a while knows that the temperatures won’t be dropping too much this month. The best piece of advice I can give is to hang in there, don’t let the summer heat get you down. You have come this far! Those cooler temperatures are around the corner. While September doesn’t bring much change in the weather, it does provide you an opportunity to get back into your workout and fitness routine. The kids are back in school and summer vacations have come and gone. Before too long you will be prepping for the holidays, but don’t jump too far ahead of yourself.    Today, this exact moment you are reading this article, is the perfect opportunity to refocus on your goals. What were the 5 most important goals you established way back in January? Maybe you haven’t seen these or thought about these for several months now. Maybe you

look at them everyday and are still focused on achieving them. Either way, write them down again. Dive deep into the meaning of each of the goals you set for yourself. Why did they mean something to you? What did you want to accomplish? How can you get there? There is way too much time left in 2013 to not achieve your goals. Make today the day you get back on track. Make 2013 your best year yet!   Often times it’s your fitness goals that need to get back on track this time of year. With all of the traveling and kids being out of school, one missed workout may have led to several months of missed workouts. But again, let the previous month’s workouts, or lack of workouts, be a thing of the past. Today you can decide to get your routine back on track.   With the temperatures still hovering above 100 degrees throughout the day, take advantage of the early mornings. Set your alarm clock 30 minutes earlier and go out for a brisk walk or light jog. Starting your day with some heart pumping exercise will elevate your mood and energy levels, while also stimulating your metabolism.

20 stationary backward lunges 30 second prone plank 20 squats 30 second side plank

Your morning shower will feel better than ever and you will be wide-awake, alert and focused. Complete your morning with a healthy breakfast such as a protein packed fruit smoothie. Your mind, body, and stomach will be prepared to take on all of the day’s challenges.    If the early mornings aren’t the best time for you to work out, be sure to find a time that does. Maybe a quick muscle blast before or after lunch fits best into your day (see side bar). Or maybe it’s time to set an appointment with a fitness coach at Funktional Fitness so you can workout efficiently right after work. Whenever it might be, just get it done! Remember today is your day to re-focus. You have about 4 months left in 2013. Achieve your goals and stay cool along the way.

The love of a fast car, and the ability to really drive it enchants the hearts of many around the world. As women infiltrate raceways and teens spin the wheels of their very first car, each day dreams of a world filled with the bright yellow gleam of a Grand Sport and the smell of smoking Good Year tires...

We at Valley Lifestyles Magazine had the amazing opportunity to experience a night at one of the top driving schools in the nation, The Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving. Our team eagerly worked through the day; checking the clock constantly. Finally, it was time to hit the road, and the track! As we turned down Gate 3 of Firebird Raceway in Chandler, our smiles grew larger. There to greet us, a line of beautiful, bright, fierce Corvettes, all sporting the name ‘Bondurant’.    World legend, Bob Bondurant raced for names like Caroll Shelby and Ferrari. In the height of his career, Bob’s McClaren flipped eight times, breaking both his legs and shattering his feet. Doctors told Bob he would never walk again. Devastated, he began sketching ideas for a driving school while lying in his hospital bed. “If I couldn’t race myself, I wanted to teach others how to be safe, efficient drivers,” smiles Bob.

His love for racing shone brightly through his tragedy, and Bob found himself both walking, and opening the car doors of his driving school at Orange County International Raceway in 1968. Three Datsuns, a Lola T70 Can-Am car and a Formula V were the school’s first training tools. His first batches of students included Paul Newman and Robert Wagner. Bob instructed the movie stars through the ins and outs of the track in the movie ‘Winning.’    The Bob Bondurant School evolved and expanded through the years, calling Sear’s Point and Ontario Motor Speedway home, before settling in Chandler, Arizona in 1990. Proudly located on the Gila River Indian Community, the Bondurant School neighbors Firebird Raceway. This home, the largest purpose- built facility in the United States, offers an eight acre Skills Pad, Bondurant West Track, Bondurant Road Course, and the 40

Bondurant’s exceptional reputation is accompanied by a graduation list of almost 500,000 students, including 90 percent of all NASCAR drivers. These students include everyone from the new teen driver, to the advanced road racer, and everything in between. The variety of classes offered at Bondurant is truly impressive. Spanning from half-day to four-day courses, this school has something for everyone. Take a step into the front office to find groups of men, women and teens smiling from ear to ear as they discuss the improvements on their latest time, and that corner that gets their adrenaline pumping. Bondurant’s 3 to 1 student to instructor ratio is a personal experience that you won’t find anywhere else. These racing gurus, all with impressive time sheets themselves, are talented, patient and informative instructors. The small class sizes give these driving professionals the opportunity to closely monitor and mentor you. After spending just a few minutes with them, it is undeniable that they really know their stuff! And this ‘stuff’ they are teaching, is called the Bondurant Method. This method instructs on every aspect you will need to know to gain ultimate car control: Cornering and Braking, Skid Control, HeelToe Downshifting, Line Technique and more.    Although the instructors make class room learning anything but dull, the Bondurant School students spend minimal time in the classroom. With 80 percent drive time, you will be applying your classroom knowledge behind the wheel of a Camaro, Zo6, Grand Sport or Formula Mazda. And, throughout the course, this car will be yours to keep. Now I understand why many refer to this school as an ‘adult Disney land.’ Aside from the cars, Bondurant has a plethora of training tools that are far from anything you find at your high school Driver’s Ed class: The Accident Avoidance Simulator- This simulator assists in teaching the ‘Lift, Turn, Squeeze’ method that has saved many from an accident, even Mrs. Bondurant! Skid Car-This car, supported by what looks to be training wheels, simulates understeer and oversteer. Making a skid on ice something you can recover from.   Auto Cross- The Bondurant School uses this mini road course to teach the importance of hitting the ‘apex,’ cornering and breaking, and weight transfer. Bob personally planned every one of the 15 turns on his 1.6 mile road course. Don’t be surprised when you find the legend himself jumping into your passenger seat, and instructing you as you make your way through his custom course. Who else better to teach you the ways of the track, than the man who designed it himself!

The Bondurant charm continues on through the sparkling Chevrolet vehicles, the smoking Good Year tires and the humming Borla exhausts. This power-house ‘Ma and Pa’ Company has stayed just that, for over 45 years. Bob and his wife Pat Bondurant remain immensely involved in everything from the beautiful car decals to your own personal experience at their school. A part of almost every graduation ceremony, Bob and Pat cheer and clap as you receive your plaque, which possesses bragging rights until the end of time. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

Another gem found in the sparkle of Bob Bondurant’s eye, The Bondurant Superkart School. Managed by Champion Kart Racer Alan Rudolph, the Superkart School is the perfect place for any adrenaline junkie. Featuring both the Touch and Go (TAG) karts and the 125cc Shifter Karts, this school gives you the opportunity to reach speeds of 100 miles per hour, just one inch off the ground. Offered every night of the week, the Superkart Instructors, who of course are Karting Champions themselves, will teach you all about

how your kart works: cornering, braking, weight transfer, kart dynamics and shifting. Before sending you out on the custom Kart Track, you will get a little taste of how talented these guys really are. Don’t worry… if you feel a bit overwhelmed, the instructors will give you a humorous and inspiring pep talk that will leave you smiling as they push you out onto the track yelling “second gear, second gear!” (Not that I needed that pep talk or anything…)

Owner, Eileen Salmon’s love for decorating increases the value of her customer service. “If you are working on a certain area in your home, bring in a picture and measurements and we will help you put together a grouping for a wall, or find the perfect accent piece to complete a table or mantle,” says Eileen. This personalized service is just one of many great aspects of shopping at Rod Works. Your eyes will dart from one gorgeous decoration to the next. Their inventory varies in textures, colors, sizes, shapes and functions. And, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Rod Works strives to have great every day prices, rather than marking things up and then putting them on “sale”. You can feel confident that you can shop at Rod Works and get a good value at any time. So, shop freely and guiltlessly. Rod Works frame accessories resemble combining décor styles, fitting perfectly in a vintage, contemporary or country home. Their faucet knobs are industrial, and colorful, adding character and accent. Sometimes, all you need is a pop of color, or a bold cast iron accessory. Rod Works cast iron products range from bird baths to mantel décor. Spicing up any indoor or outdoor space, these quality components add style and will stand the test of time. Rod Works wall décor, frames, accents, signs, garden décor and clocks will turn any room lacking luster into a wonderful expression and a welcoming space. “My favorite thing about decorating is that there really are no rules! Do what feels and looks right to you. If something just doesn’t look right, try adding different textures and finishes. Perhaps you need a pop of color, or some crisp white accessories to create the perfect look,” smiles Eileen. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

Try books, old boxes, buckets, etc. Not only does this give you some height but it gives you more texture and color to work with. ~ When in doubt, start with your larger items first then fill in with your smaller items. ~ With Fall almost upon us, many of our customers will be looking to bring in some warmer colors to their decor. It is easy to add fall flowers and accessories to your home. Caffeined CRAZE The East Valley’s

BY LINDSEY RODRIAN / PHOTOS BY SARAH BEL GRAY

Many start their morning in what seems to be a TV Coffee commercial… I know I do. The alarm goes off, I put my slippers on, and I make my way to the kitchen. The sound of my coffee grinder has become almost as pleasant as the sound of gentle rain. After my first few sips, I realize my slippers are on the wrong foot, and I begin my day.

Coffee is one of the most consumed drinks in the world. Like your favorite accessory, coffee can evolve and change to fit any mood or season. Blended drinks relieve us from the sweltering and tiring summer months, while seasonal iced beverages gently accompany us into the sweet relief of fall. And always there to lead the way, the timeless hot coffee.

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2013

When I find myself in the organic isle of the grocery store, I usually pick a brand name that sounds inciting, or a bag design that catches my eye. Darn you, marketing gurus! I will be your victim no longer, that is, unless you also have my favorite coffee. Blonde Roast, Medium Roast, French Roast, Hawaiian Kona, Pacas? Hmm? I grab the bag, and hope for the best.    I consider myself a coffee lover; I have a cup every day. So, when I found myself feeling like a wine connoisseur drinking from a box, I became curious. I knew little about the beans I purchased and the aromas filling my cup. Time for change! The global enjoyment and production of coffee began in the 15th century, making its way to Yemen and Arabia, eventually filling the cups of people all over the world. Today, Vietnam, Brazil and Columbia are the world’s leading coffee bean producers.    Researching the history of coffee is interesting; after all, it is one of the largest traded agricultural commodities in the world. But, it won’t help me pin point my favorite beans, roasts and flavors. Luckily, I know somewhere that will… Bergies Coffee Roast House, founded in 2008, sits perfectly in the Heritage District of Gilbert. Owners Brian and Bruce Bergeson, custom roast their coffee. Their passion for finding the perfect cup of coffee has driven them to learn as much as they can about the roasting processes, the beans, and everything in between. To share their love and knowledge, the Bergeson brothers host ‘Brewing Basics’ events throughout the year. I had the pleasure of attending Bergies ‘Discover Your Roast’ and that’s just what I did!

I’ve got to admit I felt like such a coffee-loving poser as I swirled and sipped each new roast. But as Brian and Bruce explained the roasting process, and the difference between light, medium and dark roasts, I became intrigued. The event was informative and fun. The ambiance of the coffee shop, along with my lovely table mates and the interactive learning style, made this ‘class’ an awesome way to spend my Saturday night. I left feeling a little closer to my morning friend, while toting an awesome t-shirt (I answered a trivia question correctly!) and ½ pound bag of Bergie’s Medium Roast… my favorite. My night at Bergies got me thinking of another interesting aspect of coffee… culture. The International Coffee Organization explains that the first coffee houses, or ‘kaveh kanes’, mirrored the function and vibe of those we visit today. First opening in Mecca and quickly spreading throughout the Arab world, the coffee shop was a success. Thriving as a place where chess was played, gossip was exchanged and singing, dancing and music were enjoyed. Nothing quite like this had existed before: a place where social and business life could be conducted in comfortable surroundings and where - for the price of a cup of coffee - anyone could venture. Whether you are looking for a spot to enjoy music, chat, or get some work done (all over a cup of Joe) The East Valley has a variety of comfy and welcoming coffee shops in the area.

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2013

First, the bean will turn a yellowish color, and will emit a grassy smell. As the beans internal waters emit, steam is produced, preparing the bean for the ‘first crack’. As the first crack is heard, the sugar is caramelized and the structure of the bean begins to change. After first crack, the roasting process can end, or continue, based on desired taste. If you stop here, you have a City Roast. As the process continues oils migrate and a second crack will be heard, now, you have a Full City Roast. Every beans first crack occurs at a different temperature. The sounds and smells are adequate qualitative measurement of the roast. Light to Dark roast temperatures vary from 350 to over 500 degrees. Light roasts hold the most caffeine and preserved, original flavor. As the bean roasts, the acidity of the bean becomes noticeable. After reaching temperatures in the 400’s any original characteristic of the bean will be lost.

CALGARY: ALBERTA CANADA

BY DON AND ANN JACKSON

CALG RY: ALBERTA CANADA’S MOST VIBRANT CITY Canada’s beautiful Alberta Province is known as the home to such iconic premier destinations as Lake Louise, the Canadian Rockies, Banff and Jasper National Parks, and its two major cities, Calgary and Edmonton.

64

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2013

And we love the province so much we feel any trip here should entail at least a two week adventure to see all the magnificent highlights mentioned above…and more. However, since space limitations for this article won’t allow us to cover all of this beautiful province, we’ll hone in on Calgary, our favorite Alberta city. Anytime we have a conversation about Calgary, we usually start with the Calgary Stampede, known as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. If you think you’d enjoy a major sporting event combined with tons of entertainment options— and don’t mind large crowds—we’d strongly recommend visiting Calgary during Stampede week, always held over a 10-day period during July. In the past, we’ve reported on numerous major sporting events and attended many like the Olympics, golf’s U.S Open, and the World Soccer Cup. But believe us, the Calgary Stampede ranks right up there with the best of the best in the sports world for sheer excitement and unbelievable talents of participants. For a number of years, we’ve had a world class sporting events bucket list that included the Calgary Stampede so when the opportunity presented itself we saddled up. CALGARY: ALBERTA CANADA

WHAT TO SEE AND DO:   We’ve attended regional rodeos before but never with the Stampede’s adrenaline-pumping magnitude. Considered by most writers as the world’s most famous rodeo, each event winner pockets a purse in excess of $100,000, and the rodeo purses total over two million dollars. There were so many thrilling highlights at each event the memories are mind boggling. The world’s best cowgirls speed through the barrel racing course while the top professional cowboys wrestle fast moving steers, ride super dangerous bulls and do their best to stay on outrageously fierce broncos. In addition to the regular events the Stampede offers, their famous TransAlta Grandstand Show every night preceded by the unique Chuck Wagon Races. These overthe-top wagon races, usually not found at United State’s rodeos, are one of the most exhilarating and entertaining sporting contests anywhere. Total prize 66

money for the wagon races, separate from rodeo payouts, exceeds an astounding $1,100,000. After the thrilling wagon races, the talent laden evening extravaganza includes spectacular “Cirque du Soleil” style acts, dramatic fireworks, and upbeat song and dance numbers by special guest stars and The Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede vocal and dance group each year. Other aspects of Stampede Park, home to most events, include a buzzing midway, free entertainment stages and an authentic native Canadian camp, named Indian Village. And outside the park, visitors shouldn’t miss the parades and free pancake breakfasts offered most mornings at various venues around town. When you go to the Stampede, there are two customs that are expected from locals and visitors, alike. First of all, you should wear a cowboy hat for everything, including meals! And secondly, whenever the Stampede activities call for a loud expression of exuberance everyone

OTHER ATTRACTIONS IN CALGARY THAT ARE DEFINITELY WORTH A VISIT INCLUDE:   Calgary Tower for panoramic vistas of the city, view dining and local art displays (calgarytower.com); Heritage Park Historical Village, a wonderful recreation of an early 1900’s Canadian town features amusement rides, antique car museum, educational historical recreations, train ride, paddle wheeler and buggy rides. The restaurants we experienced that deserve recommendation include Vintage Chophouse and Tavern, a local favorite serving sumptuous Alberta beef and a speakeasy type atmosphere offering live jazz and blues (vintagechophouse.com); Murrieta’s, offering fine seafood and pastas in a historic setting, is a must (murrietas.ca); Buzzard’s Restaurant and Bottlescrew Bill’s Pub are local institutions serving creative pub grub since 1980 (bottlescrewbill.com). For a wild west evening of high octane music and dancing, be sure to stop in at Ranchman’s, Calgary’s most iconic and rowdy western bar (ranchmans.com).

NEARBY SIDE-TRIPS:    Even if you don’t have time to head off to Lake Louise, Banff, Jasper or Edmonton, we’d encourage you to head west towards the majestic Canadian

Rockies and have an adventurous stop at Canada Olympic Park; the host site for the 1988 Winter Olympics offering all the major winter sports activities and the Olympic Hall of Fame/ Museum. Their summer sports activities include bob sleigh rides, mini-golf, mountain biking, and a skyline luge. Their zip line, from the very top of the Olympic ski jump tower down to the valley floor, was one of the highest and fastest we’d ever experienced and included a wow factor—we needed to drop a parachute for a slower and safer stop (winsportcanada.ca). Our next recommended destination is the beautiful Brewster’s Kananaskis Guest Ranch, only available to groups, but a perfect choice for our San Joaquin Valley meeting planners (brewsteradventures.com). Nearby, the popular Rafter’s Six Ranch Resort is open to individual visitors as well as groups, and both ranches offer adventurous conference locations away from the stresses of corporate life, like scenic horseback rides, white water rafting, and many other outdoor activities (raftersix.com).

Although the Stampede is reason enough to visit Calgary, the city itself, Olympic Park, and the Kananaskis area, all offer a ton of reasons to plan a minimum of a week getaway to the region. The short, two-plus hour flight from our nearby Sacramento airport—and the moderate prices found in Alberta Province—make it a very inviting vacation destination. A better recommendation is to follow our lead and spend at least two weeks in Alberta and include Lake Louise, Banff, Jasper, and Edmonton.

SALAD AND GO YOUR HEALTHY DRIVE-THRU EXPERIENCE BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Everyone understands the feeling of craving something truly satisfying, filling and energizing. For some reason, I always find myself amidst that particular craving when I am crunched for time. A long day leaves my body wanting anything but a greasy meal at a fast food restaurant. When we are faced with the continuation of a long day, our quick stop for dinner needs to be full of foods that will keep our mind and body going. But, we find ourselves in line at the drive-thru: America’s answer to the crunch for time. But, this ‘answer’ will scientifically leave you feeling as sluggish as ever. Worry no more, East Valley residents! Your quick stop has become everything you ever dreamed… beautifully green, and full of protein. But how?!

IN SEASON

GRAPES BY MICHELE BIRD

From straight off the vine to your kitchen table, grapes are an ingredient that can be used in any meal. Wine country is prominent in California and there are many local vineyards scattered throughout Lodi to Napa. Grapes can vary in color ranging from red, purple, and white. To help maintain the freshness, you should refrigerate grapes for a time frame lasting one to two weeks. When you are ready to prepare the grapes for cooking or simply snacking, don’t forget to wash them under some water prior to consumption. For those who have

never cooked with this small fruit, there are an infinite amount of recipes you can utilize. Grapes are hitting the menu more frequently and are no longer known just as the traditional raisins, wine, or juice. Some techniques when cooking with grapes can include roasting, grilling, baking, or sautĂŠing. It primarily depends what type of flavor you are trying to achieve in your dish. As plan your next culinary masterpiece, be sure to consider using grapes to spruce up an old school recipe. Grapes can provide the perfect flavor kick to amp up every

type of cuisine. Some recipes where you may not expect grapes to be one of the key ingredients are salsa, baked potatoes, or soup. You could also take the classic approach with grapes and create your own one-of-a-kind jelly or juice blend from scratch. Whether it is dinner or dessert, you might find out that grapes have become your go-to ingredient for years to come. Not to mention, fruit and vino lovers are guaranteed to find this delicious flavor to be a hit!

FINAL THOUGHTS

IT’S ALWAYS WINE TIME BY KELLY POLLARD

September brings that special time of harvest and celebration of all things wine.   I can’t quite remember when I learned to like wine, and how it transitioned from casual acquaintance to illicit love affair. Perhaps it was after I became a mother that I truly understood the solace in each little drop. I started with Cabernet and Merlots. The smoky, hickory liquid was as soothing to my senses as the milk that lulled my babies into blissed out nap nirvana. Nothing calmed this frazzled mother with more ease than a fragrant glass. Wine became a staple for weekends, but also for TGIF, Manic Monday, and Thirsty Thursday.   White wine used to give me a headache. Then I discovered Sauvignon Blanc and rarely looked back at my reds languishing on the wine rack. No more pesky wine stains either. I am no expert though… I’m surrounded by all manners of wineries and wine bars. I’m just as happy with certain five dollar brands as the swankier options. I’m the admitted amateur wine lover. I’m the one who shows up at the tasting room chewing gum, throwing it away, then sipping my first taste much to the wine pourer’s chagrin. I don’t bat a lash when my brother pours his red wine over ice like a cocktail (I just hide my expensive bottles from him) and I’m too impatient to let a freshly opened bottle of wine breath. It took me years to figure out how to operate a wine opener, especially if I’d already

82

had a glass or two before operating. What a relief that I’m no longer the party killer that snaps the cork in half leaving flaky shards floating in the bottle. My next level of wine expertise will be installing a wine fridge into the kitchen to keep all the wines at optimal temperature. Yes, I do realize it’s not proper to throw a bottle of warm white wine in the freezer for thirty minutes, but that’s never stopped me.   I realize there is an art to pairing particular wines with food, although it took me awhile to get the connection. I thought wineries served cheese and chocolate while we tasted so my stomach had something in it to counteract the alcohol. After understanding the connection between fine foods and wine, I also realized that wine was an eager partner with almost anything— picnics, leisurely bike rides, The Bachelor television binges, and even tastings while grocery shopping. For some reason, my husband wasn’t quite onboard with my business proposition of opening a wine and pedicure bar. Perhaps he feared I’d drink all the inventory while my customers’ feet pruned wrinkled up unattended in swirling foot bathes as I swirled my own sparkling wine glass. Alas, I shall have to stay content with purely recreational wine ventures, whether it’s sharing a bottle with girlfriends or sipping alone while catching trashy television shows. So what if it’s the middle of the week. It is Wine Wednesday after all.
