“If food is the body of good living, wine is its soul.”

As the community continues to prosper, empty spaces are being filled and local favorites are expanding. The seeds of recovery that follow hard economic times seem to take root in the restaurant industry, as people find they have money to spend once again.   Community dollars easily stay within, as we indulge in locally, family owned restaurants that surely surpass any chain food offering. Maybe this is in due in part to our rich agricultural roots that make seasonal, farm fresh products readily available. Maybe it’s the tight-knit, passionate people that make up this area we call home. Regardless of where the inspiration stems, we are most certainly blessed with a plethora of talented and creative chefs and restaurant owners capitalizing on San Joaquin tastes, and broad flavors ranging from classic American and California fusion, to Thai, Japanese, Mediterranean and more.   Just recently crowned Wine Enthusiast’s Wine Region of the year, the work and dedication of those tending to, bottling, and pouring Lodi Appellation wines is something to celebrate. We couldn’t be prouder of the area’s growing notability, and are happy to guide you through our little slice of wine country as you learn a little more about the families that bottle your favorite blends—and what unique aspects their wineries have to offer.   It seems as if new local restaurants, bars, and wineries are popping up left and right, as signature classics continue to prosper and expand. In support of all things San Joaquin we’ve compiled a visual and explanatory mouth-watering exploration through the area’s finest in food and drink—to give you the low down on new staples, and keep the classics on your radar.

Enjoy!

LAST THOUGHTS We sat down with the men and women behind the dish and the glass to offer a personal look into their business. Whether they’ve been a San Joaquiner for life, or now call the Central Valley home, these passionate people nurture community growth—and supporting their ventures and talents do the same.

What’s your favorite Zin? Can you even bare to choose one? We can’t, so instead we formed a little round up of the incredible area of Zinfandels produced in our appellation. So sip away, friends. And enjoy the fruits of our region’s labor!

BREADFRUIT Tree

BUD’S Seafood GRILLE

Have a taste of what the Caribbean has to offer during your visit to Breadfruit Tree, located along the sweeping shores of the Delta in Paradise Point Marina, and on Pershing Avenue in Stockton. Here, Chef Louis Bynoe provides an inlet into the open waters he once called home, giving San Joaquin a tour of Jamaica, Barbados, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and more.   Enjoy tempting plates of Peleau, a rice that’s stir fried with mixed vegetables, your choice of chicken, seafood, Ital, or a combination, and countless enticing spices balanced just right. Or oprt for the Pepper Shrimp as your entrée, marinated in Breadfruit Tree’s own specialty sauce, sautéed in hot peppers and tomatoes, then served with Basmatic rice.    These dishes and so many more are available for your dining pleasure on the waterways, with the cool Delta breeze as your companion. Or sit yourself alongside the murals at both locations and escape to your own personal paradise right in the Central Valley.

Topped with a perfectly fitting bar menu and an inviting ambiance, this locally owned and operated seafood-focused restaurant serves as a regional gem for customers expecting consistency, and above all else, fresh ingredients.    Stockton natives, Jeanne and Bud Millsaps, opened Bud’s Seafood Grille on April 1, 1993 with the motto “Simple and Fresh.” The establishment is family run, as both Bud and their son, Matt, manage the extensive full-service bar and food menus. Voted “Best Seafood Restaurant “ in San Joaquin every year since 1994, Bud’s provides the ideal dining experience with an extensive menu of fresh seafood, beef, and chicken entrees, salads, and homemade desserts.    From the Coconut Prawns to the Macadamia Mahi, and quite possibly the best Clam Chowder you’ve ever tried, all recipes are made in-house, right down to the salad dressings, giving each dish a distinct ‘Bud’s’ taste. Ingredients are sourced locally when possible, with an ever-changing menu of in season specials. From Sunday brunch on the patio to catering large events, Bud’s seems to offer it all.

HABANERO Hots At Habanero Hots, customers can make their spiciest desires a reality. John DeNigris began his career as a dishwasher, and now, is the proud owner of one of Lodi’s hot spots (and we mean that quite literally). After 16 years of loyalty and commitment, DeNigris bought the business in 1996. The TexMex inspired menu infuses traditional recipes handed down from several generations with colorful dishes that look as good as they taste!    Habanero’s full bar includes more than 180 different types of tequila, and more than 25 different types of margaritas. From gringo grubs to sizzling fajitas and Habanero’s famous appetizers, there’s something for everyone.    Their famed ‘beat the heat’ challenge allows bold customers to eat one of the hottest peppers in the world—a habanero. Take a bit of the heat home with help from their hot sauce shop, one of the most extensive around, greeting guests with more than 150 different types of sauces.

Located in Village West Marina in Stockton, Garlic Brothers Restaurant and Bar makes for great water views teamed with delicious food and drinks.    The broad menu features long time favorites including grilled oysters, garlic steak, fish tacos, and grilled pork steak—along with a variety of appetizers, pastas, and salads. Garlic Brothers has the oldest wood fired pizza oven in the area, and many pizza selections to choose from.    With daily specials such as Taco Tuesdays, Wednesday $3 Spaghetti & Garlic Bread, live music Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights plus a great happy hour and patio dining—it’s no wonder the restaurant has captured San Joaquin’s taste buds as a local favorite for 20 years.

Bottled up in Peltier’s sublime blends is a story that spans the seasons, dating back and into the mid 1980s, when the purchase of a vineyard gave birth to a legacy in the making.   Rodney and Gayla Schatz found something special in the acres of trellises on Peltier and Kennefick road. Each row, covered in vines and leaves, held potential to become an award winning taste of the Lodi Appellation. Since building their crush facility in 2001, Peltier Winery has developed into sustainable, certified green, estate grown vineyards.   Come and visit with the third generation in grape growers to enjoy the varietals they’ve produced, including Teroldego, Vermentino, Chardonnay, and Petite Sirah, with many more to choose from.   Their innovative blends, alongside the rustic comforts of their tasting room, are key to a quality visit amongst the vines. OAK FARM Vineyards An elevated wine tasting experience.

There’s a rich history behind Oak Farm Vineyards, tucked away amongst the vines and ancient oak trees. It’s a place where classic charm meets our modern world and transforms into a lavish venue for friends and family to enjoy.    Life first breathed into this farm-turned-winery when William DeVries and his wife purchased the property in the 1860s. Taken by the majestic oaks that dotted his property, DeVries declared that not a single tree would be chopped down without due cause. It is from their grand stature that Oak Farm Vineyards received its name.   Years later, Oak Farm Vineyards has become the centerpiece for many wine enthusiasts across the region. Dan Panella, owner and president of Oak Farm, is the man to thank for much of what the winery has become. Alongside friends, family, and fellow Oak Farm employees, Dan has established a tried and true tradition of providing the Lodi region fantastic assortments of wine. Stop in, have yourself a seat, and enjoy a sample or two. FOR MORE INFORMATION: 23627 Devries Rd., Lodi (209) 365-6565, OakFarmVineyards.com

Enjoy over a century of our family’s wine growing passion in every glass. A day at the Mettler’s is never just a day of wine tasting; it’s a sip back in time. The family’s first Lodi vineyards were planted in the late 1800s. Then, in the 1940s, Carl Mettler married Gladys Handel and they expanded their family farm, which led their youngest son Larry to uphold family tradition. Larry and his wife Charlene, along with their three children now carry on the family’s dedication to being stewards of the land. It’s a tip of the glass in honor of the many generations that have contributed to what makes Mettler so special today.    Come see for yourself why their certified sustainable and organically farmed vineyards are home to some of our appellation’s best wines. WINEDINE209 2016 EDITION

A small family winery with deep roots.

Agriculture runs deep in the Barsetti bloodline; a legacy that Janis Barsetti Gray and her husband Richard have continued to embrace and nurture. Janis’ grandfather Gottardo Barsetti first settled into the family’s gorgeous Galt landscape in 1912, operating a small farm. This careful bond between the rich earth and family tradition is what prompted the Grays out of retirement and into the wine making business, producing varieties such as Barsetti’s first Red Varietal, Old Town Red, and Dolce Maria, a dessert wine named in honor of Janis’ grandmother.    Janis and Richard opened their first tasting room in December 2014. The much-anticipated opening offered an exceptional venue to sample Barsetti’s bouquets. This is only one of the many ways Barsetti has grown throughout the years; ways that Janis has attributed to her beloved, late husband.    “Barsetti Vineyards is a small family winery with deep roots in the Galt community,” Janis decrees. “A family and a business that gives back to my community. My husband, Richard, who passed away in April, was such a large part of this business. He was my support to keep moving forward in the wine business.” FOR MORE INFORMATION: 400 4th St., #150, Galt, (209) 744-6062, BarsettiVineyards.com

When you’re at Harney Lane, you’re never just a guest; you’re a part of the family. That’s what six generations worth of hospitality and warmth will bring when you go sampling at the Mettler’s remarkable winery.   From vine to bottle, Harney Lane handles it all, with as much care and dedication involved in their wine-making process as they have for each other.    Meet the matriarch of the family, Kathleen, as you step foot in their tasting room, sharing stories with friends and pouring glass after glass of quality blends.    Fellow founders behind the Harney Lane legacy are never far from the vineyards. Jorja Lerner, daughter of Kathleen, returned to the family tradition after 15 years as a physical therapist. Her husband, Kyle Lerner, thrives in the thrills that the winery business brings. And even their two children, Kirsten Elizabeth and Ian James, involve themselves by helping with special events. ACQUIESCE Winery

Lodi’s only all white wine winery featuring award winning Rhône style estate grown white wines! Surrender to the rich, ripened flavor of Acquiesce’s wine varietals when enjoying all the Lodi Appellation has to offer. Sue Tipton, the proprietress of Acquiesce Vineyards, has tenderly raised her Southern French grapes to provide any white wine or rosé aficionado the perfect sip with each tilt of their glass.    Fans of Acquiesce’s aromatic fragrances and incredible flavor can look forward to varieties like the 2015 Roussanne, a lovely blend of lush cream and apricot. Looking for a taste of what started it all? Try Acquiesce’s very own 2015 Belle Blanc, a blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Viognier that pays homage to the white Chateauneuf du Pape wine that spurred Sue to begin her Rhône vineyard.    Acquiesce tasting room, located in Acampo, showcases a splendid view of the estate, surrounded by rows and rows of proudly perfected vines. The tasting room is a century old barn whose doors slide open wide, prompting guests to soak in their beautiful surroundings within safe reach of another awaiting sample. It’s a classic setting with a personal touch that Sue has carefully nurtured. It’s one more reason why people from across the region are coming in for a sip! FOR MORE INFORMATION: 22353 N. Delicious wines from ancient vines. Ancient vines thrive in the blissful California sunshine at Jessie’s Grove. These very same vineyards, first planted in the 1800s, continue to produce some of the richest, most flavorful wines that the Grove has to offer.   Their history begins with Joseph Spenker, a young man who’d come to Stockton with only pennies in his pocket. In just 10 years he’d claimed over 1500 acres of fertile land in the Lodi Appellation and had begun his family. It wasn’t long after that Joseph planted his first vineyards, the start of Jessie’s Grove.   The Grove has two tasting rooms for your sipping pleasure. Visit the Estate and Home Winery to sample among the vineyards and 32 acre oak grove. Stop by the museum and take a step into Jessie’s past, the daughter of Joseph Spenker to which the estate is named. Her precious birthright, the Grove itself, is yours to enjoy.    If you’re in downtown Lodi you’re never too far from the tasting room at the Olde Ice House! This structure, first built in the 1800s, is yet another valuable piece of Lodi history you’re free to roam when you come in for a taste of the Grove’s spectacular stock.

Michael McCay brought something unique to the Lodi Appellation when he and his family began to farm its fertile soils over 20 years ago. It was a knack for knowing what made the best in fruitful blends, a gift that McCay Cellars provides its guests today. Since launching their label in 2007, Michael has continued the tradition of exploration in wine making, discovering the best ways to promote the flavors of Zinfandel and Rhone varietals.    Join the McCay family for a sampling like no other at their tasting room, the perfect opportunity for joining in on their cycling club!
