King Coal The brighter side of coal in America

King Coal

Using innovation and technology to safely revitalize the coal industry.

King Coal’s bio-refinery uses naturally occurring enzymes to take impurities out of waste coal — before the coal is burned. Coal is deemed ‘waste’ when it contains too much ash, gravel or impurities to be processed for use, or it is the waste from coal preparations. There are billions of tons of ‘waste’ or ‘refuse’ coal piles across the United States near abandoned coal mines. The coal in these piles contain concentrations of metals and other contaminants, that when burned, emit emissions that can be harmful to the environment. Often, the sulfur content of this coal is so high that even nature has a difficult time at best growing vegetation near the coal piles. And the runoff created by rainfall can contaminate the surrounding soil and the drinking water. Every state and country that produces coal has these waste coal (”gob”) piles that should be remediated and returned to a natural state.

The King Coal solution King Coal, LLC, has successfully designed and developed a Bio-refining process, which can safely and economically reduce contaminants and undesirable impurities such as sulfur, ash, and mercury. These dangerous chemicals can be permanently sequestered, thereby providing for cleaner air, soil and water. This is a major development because this technology makes it possible to process entire refuse piles and slurry pits just as nature would eventually do over millions of years, but at production rates of up to 500 tons/hour. King Coal‘s proprietary Biotechnology not only separates the coal left in refuse piles (usually between 30 to 50 percent of the piles are viable coal), but also improves the quality of the coal itself. The Bio-Refining process removes most of the pyritic sulfur and sulfates leaving mostly quality organic sulfur, reduces the coal’s ash content and increases the BTU value of the coal. As the Bio-Refinery processes the refuse pile, it actually binds unwanted elements such as sulfur and harmful heavy metals, to the proteins and creates an organic material. These sequestered organic materials are then used as clean topsoil to fully remediate the site of the refuse coal pile. Previously hazardous refuse coal sites are left safe for humans, animals and plants -- no longer allowing dangerous contaminants into the soil and ground water.

Innovation and Technology Creating New Jobs in Coal Country.

Large deposits of refuse coal exist all over the country. Many of these deposits are located in areas where active coal mining has slowed to almost a standstill – and where good jobs are hard to come by. King Coal’s innovative Bio-Refinery technology can rejuvenate economically distressed areas by creating good paying jobs and impacting every community in which they are located. The site preparations, permitting, and construction of each site will impact 50 laborers and contractors, and each plant will employ between 5-10 workers on an ongoing basis. King Coal plans to locate its Bio-Refinery units in zones where many different refuse coal deposits may be refined and remediated. Each Bio-Refinery location will help clean up and sequester potentially hazardous material at each site. When these refuse piles are fully remediated, they will be covered with clean topsoil, created through the Bio-Refining process creating a safe environment for plant growth or livestock to graze. King Coal’s Bio-Remediation facilities are composed of efficient, state of the art equipment. Transportable and scalable, the Bio-Refineries can process coal at input rates starting at 50 tons per hour and up, depending on the number of Bio-Refinery units placed on each site. These Bio-Refineries can be located remotely on the site where large piles of refuse coal exists, at transportation hubs where coal is loaded into train cars or barges, or co-located on site at a coal fired power plant to clean dirty coal before it is burned. At our laboratory facilities in Little Rock, Arkansas, King Coal will perform research and engineering, ensuring that each coal pile is treated with an enzyme compound tailor made to most effectively remove that particular coal’s impurities.

The safe revitalization of the Coal Industry will change America.

Clean Coal. Clean Environment. The process described herein cleans coal, particularly refuse coal, to a very high degree and with a very high Ki degree (>95%) of yield, that is, little loss of the coal. The process uses enzymes to break the bonds of water soluble contaminants and proteins to sequester those contaminants. Once those chemical changes are completed, the process uses rather conventional coal prep means to separate the coal, the water/enzymes/proteins and the solids. The solids, which have been rendered non toxic and are a “recharged topsoil” are used to remediate the site from which the refuse coal was taken; the water/enzyme/protein mix is recycled back into the process; and the cleaned coal is shipped to the customer. There are two principal uses of coal: - To produce steam, which is mostly used for the production of electricity and - Metallurgical coal which is principally used in blast furnaces for iron and steelmaking. Steam production is the largest use for coal and each rank of coal, from lignite at the low end to relatively high volatile content bituminous coal at the high end, is commonly used for steam production. Cleaning this coal has two main purposes: - Raising the heat (BTU) content and, - To reduce the emissions resulting from burning it. Carbon Dioxide - The treated coal has 50% less carbon dioxide output when burned than coal in its untreated state. Sulfur - The treated coal has 60% less sulfuric oxide output when burned than coal in its untreated state. Nitrogen - The treated coal has 31% less nitrous oxide output when burned than coal in its untreated state. Ash - In refuse coal, ash levels are reduced from an average of 55% to a 3%-7% level.

Steve Parks, C

Natural Resources Industry Expertise

King Coal’s primary Bio-Refinery, currently operating in Logan County, Arkansas is pioneering new clean coal technologies. Along with our partners, Marshall Miller Engineering and DEL Tank, we are working on innovations that will improve efficiency and create even more affordable pre-combustion clean coal. King Coal, along with its partners, plan a near term expansion including the purchase of 2 existing coalmines and the construction of 50 Bio-Refineries across the country.

With 33 years in the industry, DEL is recognized as the primary supplier of customized tank systems and equipment for all types of dredging, dewatering, solids separation, solids control, and solids handling projects across the globe.

Founded in 1975, Marshall Miller and Associates, Inc. (MM&A) is a multi service geological and engineering consulting firm. With over 200 employees in ten offices, consisting of mining, environmental, civil, and geotechnical engineers, geologists, and hydro geologists, MM&A has become one of the most respected geological and engineering consulting firms in the United States. The company has also been working internationally since 1986.

The King Coal Leadership Team. Years of Experience and Innovation. Steve Parks, CEO After studying marketing and accounting at Memphis State University from 1971- 1975, Mr. Parks has enjoyed success in the automobile business pioneering leasing programs and later in the insurance industry, where he was recognized with the highest awards available by New York Life and later with Mutual of New York. Most recently, Steve has focused on economic development, bringing three major businesses, to Arkansas with over $230 million in assets. In 2007, Mr. Parks established King Coal, in order to mine and produce refined coal from the surface and deep mines which are located in Arkansas, as well as pursuing other coal related ventures.

Larry Jordan, VP An Oklahoma native, Mr. Jordan has spent his life in the energy business. After owning a successful oil field services company and then a Natural Gas utility, Larry has focused his talents on refined coal. His years of experience with coal production and mining bring with them vast industry knowledge and associations throughout the energy sector.

Carl Bird, Chief Engineer Mr. Bird received his engineering degree from Southern Methodist University. He has been involved in plant engineering and construction, project management and manufacturing for various industrial and chemical companies.
