Taiwan Grieves over the Death of Director Chi Po-lin by Jason Grenier, special correspondent Taiwanese people are grieving the passing of Chi Po-lin, the famed director of Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above. The 52-year-old filmmaker was killed in a helicopter crash in the mountains near Fengbin, Hualien County. Also killed in the crash were the helicopter pilot Chang Chih-kuang, and Chi’s assistant Chen Kuan-chi. Chi’s sudden death is an undeniably tragedy, but he fully appreciated the danger of flying in helicopters. It took the director and his crew three years to shoot the documentary Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above, during which they spent around 400 hours in the air. During those long flights, Chi and his crew reportedly had a number of narrow brushes with disaster due to unstable weather. Despite such hardship, the film broke documentary box office records in Taiwan, won best documentary at the Golden Horse Awards, and went on to earn a special place in the hearts of millions of Taiwanese. When he died, Chi was shooting a follow-up, which he had hoped to release in 2019. Creating the documentary that made him a household name was a labor of love for Chi. He quit his government job, invested his personal savings, and borrowed cash to fund the project, which he dreamed would open many people’s eyes to the splendor of the island they call home. As a passionate environmentalist, Chi also wanted to show the cost of Taiwan’s rapid industrial and urban development──the widespread destruction of the natural landscape. His efforts were not in vain. Recent photographs published by Chi revealed the Asia Cement Company has expanded the scope of its mining operations within the boundaries of Taroko National Park, despite the firm’s repeated claims to the contrary. This caused public outrage, with more than 200,000 signatures collected to demand the government review its granting of a new 20-year business license to the Asia Cement Company without conducting the environmental impact assessment. People in Taiwan all mourned Chi’s death. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said that Chi’s death was a great loss to the nation, stating that his work fostered awareness of Taiwan’s natural beauty, and inspiring many people ~1~
