March 5 May 2,8 T HIS ISA THREE MONTH SUPPORT GROUP For the exploration of those challenges/opportunities confronting the middle and later stages of our lives. We will explore issues such as: • The facing of one's aloneness - shifts in relationships • Changes in physical health and appearance • 1'eelings of depression and futility about one's future • The realisation of one's mortality Society has told us that getting older is something to fear. However, growing older can be a graceful and natural experience full of self-awareness, relaxation and a silent bliss. Wecan learn to celebrate our aloneness and freedom as the need for the other decreases. These three months will be an opportunity to shake some of the conditioning that prevents us from experiencing the positive side of this natural life process. The group will meet fortnightly including four 14ay intensives at the Osho Kharabat, Keysbrook andthree Thursday evenings at the Osho Institute for the Miracu!ous, Fremantle. Space is limited, therefore complete payment T days in advance is required to reserve your space. Cost is $490 or A50 if payment isreceii>ed beforeFebruary 15th. Phone 450 5509 for bookings.

KMRlVALLFf,WES TM AUSTNLN:

-GIANTTREESAND "BHAGWAN'S BITE"足 by Shavda Pemberlon arri Valley Resort - the valley of the giant majestic, magnificent 250 feet tall trees standing silently looking down on the man made lake and the hotel chalets with their neat little balconies. People like midgets scurrying around in paddle boats and canoes; shrieks and shouts as canoes deliberately crash into each other and capsize. Raucous male shouts from tourists, beer cans bobbing in the water whilst the silent giants look on. Recently I spent three days at Karri Valley accompanying my husband, a medical specialist, who was guest speaker at a weekend medical conference. Whilst he had work I got to know the lake and the wonderful Karri Trees. Words are inadequate to describe these gentle West Australian 150 year old 250 feet giants. I joined some of the free activities for guests, one of which was a guided bushwalkadvertised as Bhagwan's Bushwalk. Our guide was a young man named Greg Mason - the activities coordinator. He led about sixteen of us up a steep hill along a track to what he said wasSheela's House, now used by the resort m anager. When we reached the house we sat down for a rest and to listen to the potted history of the past owners of what is now known as Karri Valley Resort. We were told the first owner ran it as a hop farm until he could not sell his hops any more and was squeezed out by the Perth Swan Brewery and had to sell. The next owners built a few chalets and huts and rented them out to trout fishermen, Later the land was subdivided and a syndicate bought it. Jay Harman was a part of the syndicate and now the infamous Ma Sheela was bought in to manage the development. Sheela bought in 'Orange People' to work the property and plans were drawn to establish a school for the children of the Orange people. Unfortunately for the Orange People, he said, an American tourist, a journalist, was staying in one of the chalets and noticed the malas worn around the necks of the people working and living there. The journalist realised that this group of people werethe same as the people who had moved into a ranch in his home state of Oregon in the US.-who were being reported daily in the media back home as the controversial orange cult or Rajneesh sect, there had been major concerns in Oregon as they built a huge commune and taken over the nearby town. The reporter alerted the local newspaper and the Perth media descended on the sleepy town of Pemberton in the far south of western Australia. With all this media attention the locals went on 'red alert' and 500 people gathered into the local town hall amidst a hoax bomb threat and demanded that the state government remove Sheela and her group from their community. Greg our guide paused at this point for a breath then went on to say that the government could do nothing as the group had not broken any laws or done anything illegal. The townsfolk of Pemberton were not happy with the answers so, facing the cameras after meeting the spokesperson told the media that if necessary they would take the law into their own hands to remove the orange people. Greg paused again, he went on to say that when a few days later the group put in an application to the state government education department for a license to open a school

needless to say it was turned down flatly. I he people ot Pemberton have never been so stirred up before or since, eventually however the situation resolved itself when things went wrong for the Orange People back on the ranch on Oregon. We

were told by Greg that Sheela then went to prison for attempting to murder the Bhagwan (laughter from our bushwalkinggroup) Bhagwan was deported by the US government on immigration charges, Jay Harman went broke (but it is now on the comeback trail), and the Orange People disappeared. At this point Greg stopped talking and looked around. My heart was thumping. I spoke up-I'd like to add something to your potted history of the place--I'm a Sannyasin, an Orange person; you are talking about a small part of my history, I have lived through that episode andremember the controversy and upheaval caused by Sheela. However there are two sides to every story and it has been interesting listening to the townspeople's version, I have found it very informative, All I would like to add to your story is that we have not disappeared, I paused and took out my gold antique mala with Osho's photo in it and said we don't wear malas and orange clothes as before. I wear this close to my heart out of a deep feeling of love for Bhagwan or Osho as he is Known. Although Osho left his body in 1990, the ranch and Sheela gone; this is the closed chapter in the story but, it is not the end of the book. The movement is very much alive I told the group, the main centre is in Poona, India where thousands of people from all over the world go every year to meet, meditate and hear the words of Osho. The young, the elderly, artists, doctors, psychologists, philosophers, the unemployea, the rich and the not so rich can all be found in centres around the world足 England, US, Germany, Japan, Australia etc. Far from disappearing the movement is alive and well, we just don't stand out the way we used to, I paused, taking a deep breath and looked around at the group, Some had drawn away from me as if they might catch something, some tried to ignore me some asked questions-Are you the same as the Hare Krishna group? No! Do you meditate? Yes. An awkward silence, someone said this place has a very colourful history and the group broke up and headed back to the resort. As the group left i asked Greg if he would mind having a photo taken with me outside Sheela's house to show the Rajneesh sign on the door, I felt a deep sadness about this stage in our history and wished it had all been different. Later that evening I told my husband of the days events as we sat sipping one of the resorts special cocktails "Bhagwan's Bite", it was a really first rate cocktail, smooth with subtle flavours and a bit of bite to keep you interested. Outside the picture windows of a cocktail lounge across the lake we could see the light was fading, a few giant Karri trees were subtly lit up by discreetly placed spot lights. Gentle music played in the background and I thought of Osho and his love for trees and remembered his words about the trees in his garden in the ashram at Poona,"These trees have heard me as much asyou have heard me, and these trees have loved me as much as you have loved me. So be respectful with them. With loving care, with sensitive alertness you will not only become a good gardener, you will also become a higher consciousness, more human, more divine. Shower on these trees all your love.

Dear friends at Osho Wings, I enjoyed the interview with lndivar in your September issue, especially his courageous comment that Osho never had a dream. However, I would like to present extracts from two discourses which suggest another view. On beingasked the question: "You spoke the other day about the great responsibility we have to get your words out to the world. Can you say some more? Osho answers: "The mostimportant need of humanity today is to be made aware that its past has betrayed it. A new humanity is absolutely and urgently needed. When I am here your responsibilityis none; I can doit alone with足 out any difficulty. Butif I am not here your responsibili足 ties tremendously increase. Then each of you has to represent me."(The Path of the Mystic; Ch. 34, Qu. 1) "In the past the enlightened people never bothered to say anything against the traditional mind because they

were concerned with their own enlightenment... So my function is very different from the function of Gautam Buddha. His function is only a small part of my philoso足 phy. I want individuals to become enlightened. But I also want the whole of humanity to rise with the enlightened

people... at least become conscious enough so that nations disappear, religions disappear, races disappear, and we can live as one humanity. At least I would like my people to fight forit." (The Rebellious Spirit; Ch. 3, Qu.1) Love,

Between us we were developing a viable paradise with morc than enough to share. Having been closely involved in commune life and the magic of the master for eighteen years, there was a lot of love and energy to build upon and share with others. With the facilities that were now available, it inevitably moved towards becoming a centre. While visiting Poona in March 1994 we were given the name:

O S H O K IR A N A - C E N TR E F O R MEDI T A T I O N AN D TRA N S H 3R M A TI O N . What does O S H O

K I R A N A m ea n ?

It means beam of light. Our understanding is that the beam of light is the combined energies of those who live, love, participate, visit and celebrate in this place. It seems to be getting stronger! Amidst the chaos here I hear OSHO's words get out of your own way frequently!

few days, seeking the space, comfort and meditations here, en route tn Central Oz and Queensland! Others are calling to book 'I or 2 Days R & R from city life to simply relax, let-go and be taken care of, We all help here with our various talents and input, I see a lot more of this happening in 1996. People are enquiring from Mand urah, Rnckingham, Fremantle and Perth - some sannyasins, some not. We have White Robe Brotherhond each Sunday, with daily regular meditations running in the hall. We have had 2 Open Days also for people to come, see, taste and explore the place. Oh.! - and don t forget the Celebrations that are now a total taken-for-granted part of our calendar. Some five major gatherings per year, thanks to our Beloved Master of Celebration! It is so wonderful to again feel the freedom to come together in big numbers, to sit silently, dance, listen to the Master, celebrate, eat, drink and be merry inthe space here. The vast skies and evening stars, and the silence above all here, the vvhole point of our seeker s path.

At present there are Nick and myself, Sw. Govindo, Sw. Satyen, Ma Poonam and Ma Sandhya with Sw. Visvaso working full time on the property and Ma Dalini part time. This team seems to have an ever changing content and flavour, each bringing vital energy and contribution. As in true commune creativity and life I am often reminded of the archimedes' principle ..................... expands to fill the available space.

(Laughs!) Cnd! Many things, believe me! To begin with, the Meditation Hall was completed in February 1994 and has since seen a variety of groups, workshops etc, being booked pretty solidly for at least 7 months of the year. We ve had Sw. Fritjof, Ma Halima, the Innerversity of Fremantle with its Training for LifeORweekends, several Multiversity groups, Ma's Ageha and Ellie, Sw. Indivar, Ma Dhara and the Light Seekers group, to name but a few.

Aaah! - another splendid addi tion this year to the whole of Osho Kirana! It s the adjacent cottage and property south of Kirana, just a walk across from the Meditation Hall. It is an established Bed & Breakfast business that Poonam is shaping at this point. We have had a superb swimm ing pool and tw o magnificent tennis courts built. W e see these Club Meditations facilities being an integral part of our group and workshop events, with visitors tn the B&B business becoming aware of the Meditation activities, healing and massage sessions at Kirana being viable options! Because Lily s is purposely a 'straight luxury' business — it is already attracting folk who w o ul d otherwise be uncomfortable with open meditation arrangements. Parents and relatives can be accommodated and reassured at l,ily s,

Where does it go from here? Our facilities now comfortably sleep up to 45 people residentially with a grow ing capacity of indi v i d ual spaces as an option to dormitory accommodation. Retreats nf varying kinds seem to be a much-called-for commodity. We have a I!urnpean traveller right now for a

Same as always. Onward and up w a rds and always to the unknown. Living here for me is an ever expansion of my heart and life in general with those I love and thnse I have yet to meet,

The agitated barfly rushed from his car into the near est puband gulped down a double scotch. "Jack," he called out to the barman, "how big is a pen guin?"

"Well replied the barman, "about two feet, I suppose." The barfly was visibly shaken. He persisted, " How about a really big penguin, Jack?" "About two feet, six inches," came the reply. "What about the biggest penguin in the world?" demanded the barfly. After a moment's pause the barman answered, "About three feet - no more." "Oh shit!" gasped the barfly, "then I' ve just run over a nun!"
