I enjoyed getting the sannyas names together and it also got me more deeply in touch with my sannyas name and the message it carries for me. The idea for this

BOOK REVIEW My Friend Nasruddin
by K u nclan Swan
These simples tales are a collection of the philosophical wisdom of the nephew of M u ll a Nasruddin and his
adventures with his girlfriend Gloria. I was delighted with the illogical and gentle humour reminiscent of Osho's famous Mulla stories, though in a more contemporary setting. I had to discipline myself not to read them all in one sitting as, like a good wine, they are better if savoured. The humourous incidents are told with the wry perspective and hidden depth that are characteristic of their author and our friend, Swami Kundan (Canadian), now li v ing in Mt. Tambourine. While an occasional story is startling, it is easy to see Kundan's gentle compassion and wise acceptance of life shine through in the sense made of the events by the story teller, at the same time givmg us another view i nto a friend's rich worl d . The cover and inside art is by another well loved former Fremantle sannyasin, Swami Jinesh. The cover perfectly reflects the stories' balance between rollicking narrative and inner connection, and is a gem m itself. O sho's Zorba and Buddha flashes into mind, wi t h Nasruddin pictured dancing with Gl oria yet simultaneously whir l ing centered as a dervish in limitless space. The slim and "tall" v o l u me, (they are called tall stories), is on sale at Osho Leela and going fast, so don't delay. It makes a great present and is very reasonably priced at $13.

Dear Wings Here we are back in Freo, old friends, and old habits (just a few) and it is so nice to find that the Centre has survived and there is a newsletter to write to. After a year of travelling and seeing so many sannyas communities without a Centre, it sure makes you appreciate one in your own backyard. Most of' us don't use the Centre very often but still like the idea of one being there, so my suggestion is that the Centre starts a membership subscription of whatever, $10 or $20 per month and we all become members and the Centre runs happily ever after. Members of course would get benefits, first in the queue to enlightenment, meals and free meditation etc. - all this could be worked out. I have seen it working in other places, so any feedback, see you at Gino's...

Out of the comer of my eye, I spotted an envelope, a video and a photo album. Being curious, I asked what it was. What I discovered, amazed me. The envelope contained about a hu n d re d p a g es of letters, written in Jap an e s e -English, between two
japanese sannyasins, Ma Jaya and •
Swam i N e e l am and various people in Poona. They were a frustratingly
exciting read. The photo album consisted of a dozen or so photo's of a
very beautiful old Japanese wo m a n . The video contained more of the same. The old woman is known affectionately as TAMO-san (Osho). The Osho bit will become clearer shortly. Back in 1989, this beautiful old woman got up, inBuddha Hall and
greeted Osho. He responded by •
bow i n g t o h e r, showering her with rose
petals and acknowledging her enlightenment. This was a rare thing. Osho generally waited until someone left the body before he declared them enlightened. After silence greeted silence that day in Buddha Hall, Osho
issued a response to TAMO-san, part of which reads - ".... First comes enl i g h t e n m e n t, there is some clarity about things. But enlightenment is • posi ti v e , it is an experience, and the • exp er i e n c er is still there. Later comes the realisation of nothingness, the infinite nothingness of existence....," When TAMO-san was in Poona, she went with her daughter, Shizuru a nd Osho's Mother, to visit Osho in Hi s room in Lao Tzu house. There, Osho gave her a mala and said to her, "After I leave my body, I am going to enter into your body! I shall be living out your life and w o r k ing together with you!!" •
In late December 1994, TAMO-san went into a deep coma for a week. "I couldn't even drink a glass of water at that time. I felt that I' ll be ready to die really then..." Being worried sick about her, Jaya and Neelam visited Poona in January 1995. Upon returning to Japan, they discovered TAMO-san in radiant good health. When reporting to her about their trip, TAM O -san cheerfully announced "So! So! There is Osho in my body n o w ! !" She has been saying such things ever since. Her strength and health returned w ith a vengeance, so that she even once spent a w hole night talking w ith a visitor, responding to his enquiries, much to his amazement. Let me quote the following di alogue to make it even juicier - Jaya: "It looks like TAM O -san's happening in December 1994 and Osho's happening, one year before He left His body, in 1988, were similar. In Osho's case, He is dangerously ill and then Gautama Buddha enters His body. In TAMO-san's case, Osho enters her body when she is in a deep coma. TAMO-san returned to this
life again. Are these the same happenings, TAMO-san?" TAMO-san: "That's right!" So, here we have an enlightened one, declared by Osho, saying that, in fulfillment of His prediction, He is residing in her, right now, alive, breathing, walking, talking and singing, in a little temple on the outskirts of
Tokyo!! At the moment, TAMO-san is about 9 0 y e a r s old, She seems to see the odd visitor, although visitors are definitely not encouraged en masse. She describes her daughter,
Shizuru, as being in oneness with her. TAMO san also has released a book, called 'Moor the Boat'. Her and Mataji, Osho's Mother, were friends. TAMO-san said of her 'W hen we
were disciples of Buddha, she guides me!" She also said that Mataji became enlightened more than a month before she left the body. When TAMO-san first went to Ponna, she disliked White Robe Brotherhood, because the sannyasins were t oo noisy for the other inhabitants of the Buddhafield birds, animals and plants etc, to sleep." Some of TAMO-san's quotes: "Mountains, river, grass, trees, animals, birds ... and human, all are equal in the cosmos." • "If it happens anything at anytime, I'm in ultimate happiness in every moment!" • "I t a ke no disciple at all!" • "O s ho who is always beside me is very
fine. We are in quite happiness. FUFUFUFU..." An American paper quoted her as follows - 'She likens mankind to "billions of ants" on a piece of driftwood, floating towards certain disaster.' "They seem to be even ignorant of the fact they are on a driftwood," TAM O -san wrote. "If they were aware, how could they afford to hate one another, scheme against one another and be occupied with greed and hostility'? The moment the driftw ood falls down a chasm, what would anythmg mean to one or another ant, friend or foe?" Speaking through an interpreter, she restated her concern: "If there is no planet for us to live on, we cannot even fight against each other. I'm not advocating love between people. That is important, but humans can take care of those problems. We cannot live without the environment, and w'e are not taking care of that problem." TAMO-san says there are three " critical ma t t e r s that have to be taken care of", if the planet and the species is to survive; reforestation, water (the balance between 'sweet' and salty) - and the poisoned soil.
"Ifwarnings are recognised and heeded, a good cycle is possible. It's not out of our hands to repair the environment." "The very simple life doesn't waste these things. And at the same time it is a happier life!"

What is the meaning of your sannyas name and
Ma Dhyan Sahaja
h ow do you relate to i '
Osho talked to me about not forcing meditation and not to use one's will. He said that you have to look after a plant indirectly, giving it love, food and water, but you can't force the petals to open. My life lesson seems to be to see when I'm forcing things to happen and simply relax and look after my own f l o w er, trusting that meditation happens spontaneously. I can only prepare the soil - meditation will come from the beyond I can' t do it through wi l l p o w er,
NLa Anand Mani Blissful Diamond The way you produce a diamond is by putting coal under enormous pressure. And that's how my l ife seems to be. I guess if I'm put u n der enough pressure, eventually I w il l start to blossom.
Swami Alok Sidhamo Light - One Who Has Arrived I relate to it when I'm not feeling so strong to probably the opposite
of it - more like the darkness of one who hasn't got off his ass. But when I'm feeling stronger and in my energy, it's a good reminder of my potential and of who I am or of who I am becoming. And I like it.
Swami Chetan Rohit Consciousness, Rising Sun •
Rising sun is a bit like, I don't feel li ke th e r e is any end to who I am. I
•
know m y b o dy is gonna go any old
t ime, but I really feel like I wi l l continue in one form or another. And somehow that fits with rising sun. Consciousness is my target, I guess I spend a lot of my t ime unconscious. I constantly catch myself doing that and my name is a reminder to try and stay awake.
Ma Prem Sono Gold of Love I like having a name with a meaning, it's kind of esoteric. My essence is very much about alchemy and transformation. It's energetic, transforming base metals into gold - unconsciousness into consciousness. Being a Prem, transformation ultim ately comes through love, self-acceptance and my heart. That's how I w or k on the inside and that fits with my w o r k on the outside.
Ma Dhyan Aloka Meditation and Light Osho's message was a powerful one, especially the words, 'be a light onto yourself'. These words have supported my journey to step out of my conditioning of society and have given me the courage to stand in my own light.

Spontaneous Meditation
Ma Veetrag Love Without Attachment When I took sannyas, Osho said, "your name means love without atta chment". As I s at at his et, the thought went through my m ind that . 80,,;Mf, O'6" achieving unattached love shouldn't be too difficult. He quickly t ~ a ' 67 ' intercepted my thoughts with a cheeky, yet stern, "and by that, I don' t mean detachment!" This was most appropriate for me as I did (and still tend to), iso late myself. At that moment I realised that I had a lot of work ahead of me to fulfill "love without attachment". The journey with my name has been one of attempting to continually resolve my detachment, as well as practicing non-attachment and letting go — and I have been given plenty of opportunity to practice! Existence is forever putting my attachment to the test, by presenting me with loss after loss, with which to come to terms and accept.
NLa Anand Asanga Blissful Unattachment It is more mysterious to me than ever. The opposite of it is miserable clinger. I guess the key is blissfulness.
Swami Chaitanyo Siddhartha Consciousness, One Whose Desires Are Fulfilled My name was Chaitanyo Rodney - consciousness Rodney! I wasn't happy w ith that so I wrote to Osho saying, "I want a new name". Chaitanyo Siddhartha was the answer - one whose desires are fulfilled. It took me some time to get the joke. Now my d esires take me to the deeper part of my being, to the innermost parts of myself, and when I stop wanting so much, to the exquisite delight in the way my l ife unfolds around me without me doing anything. Thank you Osho.

Wisdom and So&ness
Bliss, Wisdom and Patience
For me it's like a constant awareness, because in the past I was very hard on myself'. It helped me to be aware of the opposite and bring myself into balance. I like my name and I like the fact that it came from Osho. It works for me because when I remember the meaning, I feel softer. Cyan means wisdom, and I think I' ve been very naive in a lot of ways and again it has helped me to become aware of the opposite and allow my wisdom more and more.
When I first got my name it meant wisdom, and later when I had darshan with Osho, He talked about it having two meanings: patience and wisdom. If I was patient I would become wise, and if I was wise (wise meaning aware) patience would become timeless. And if either or both of those things happen I would be bliss, The biggest thing for me is to watch and wait. That is my mantra. Whatever shit's going down, whatever is going on in my life, ultimately that is the message that sticks: Watch and wait!
Ma Prem Yuthika Love, Jasmine Flower
Ma Shanti Mandana
When Osho gave me my name he said: "This is one of the most beautiful names." I looked around, I thought he was talking to somebody else, I couldn't believe He was talking to me. I guess I felt so mcongruent with the softness and the beauty of the name.„ I see it as a potential for me to get in contact with that part of me, that vulnerability of a jasmine flower, and at the same time the strength of the scent, which I find incredibly powerful. A funny thing happened, when I came back to Australia I decided to buy a jasmine plant to really deeply explore what jasmine was all about, but the next day a dog came along and ran off with my pl ant ...!!
Delighted Peace
Osho Wings -
O c t/ N ov/ De c
I can relate to both peace and delight. When I am able to be in my heart with totality, I feel a very still and peaceful quality arising... Delight holds a very strong message for me about accepting myself, really claiming my energy, living my creative juice and simply delighting in my own energy! And of course I can also totally relate to the opposite, where peace becomes constant internal conflict with myself and delight becomes making myself miserable with it, But my name helps me again and again to just get out of my head and delight in myself and in what existence has to offer!

Beloved Osho I know that I am not my body, but still I vvant
to love and be loved. Is spiritual love possible in this rotten world?
0 ®
is world is not rotten. This world is full of God - or, in Buddha's words: full of nothingness, which is the same. If
by the society. Your body is truer than your mind and than your self; your body belongs to existence. But you must have been contaminated by the priests that you are not the body. They have created a dichotomy in everybody that "You are the soul, and how can a soul fall so much as to love a body?" And you will not find ghosts around here — you will find people who live in their bodies, who are their bodies, That 's why you cannot find somebody to love
•
anything is rotten, it is your mi nd. A nd, yes, it is very
difficult with a rotten mind to find love. And never think in terms of spiritual love and material love - love is simply love. It is neither material nor spiritual. How can love be material or spiritual? Love is simply love, Love means the joy of sharing your life with somebody. Yes your body can be shared, your being can be

and be loved by - you are in search of a ghost. And I don't think if you really come across a ghost that you will like it. But that's what you are hankering for. You have been told tocondemn your body; and if you condemn your body and if you don't like your body, do you think somebody else is going to like it? If even you don't like it, who is going to like it? By liking your body, by loving your body, you create a situation in which somebody else can also love your body. But you create that milieu, that climate. A man or a woman who hates his own body ... and that's how you all hate deep down, because from the very beginning you have been told to hate the
body - body is something ugly, body is something unspiritual. You have been taught that the body is the enemy. The body is the temple of God. In this body liveo ~ t n o t h i n g ness Buddha talks about; in this body lives that seed of enlightenment I go on talking about. This body contains your greatest joy, this body contains God. Don' t condemn it, otherwise it will be impossible, You say: I know that I am not my body, but still I want to love and be loved.

shared - but sharing is love, not what you share. Sharing is love. So all love is simply love. But I can see the problem must be coming from your upbringing: I know that I am not my body ... who t old you? You are more your body than your m i n d . You are more your body than y o u r so-called self, That's what Ikkyu is saying: that self is a false entity, rotten. And the mind is just a phenomenon conditioned
•
That desire is natural! - to love and to be loved. That is part of human consciousness, an intrinsic part of it, built in. The society can contaminate your ideas about the body, but it cannot destroy your desire to be loved. So that desire continues. But now it becomes impossible because that desire can be fulfilled only through the body. So you are in a fix. Either drop the idea of love ... which you cannot do, which nobody can do, because we are made of the stuff called love. It is impossible to drop it, Just let me remind you again: a single glimpse of the real man, and you are in love. Even at the ultimate stage, love explodes, love remains; you really become totally loving. So you cannot drop that. That is your destiny; that has to be fulfilled. But if you condemn your body it is very difficult. You want to go to the other shore and you condemn the boat. Now, how are you going to manage it? The bridge can take you to the other shore.

ove your body. Accept yourself as your body. Receive it with gratitude, it is a gift. Otherwise it will
be impossible. And even if somebody falls in love with you — the question is from a woman - if somebody falls in love with you, you will not allow him to love you. If he wants to hold your hand, you w ill shrink back. You will think, "Here comes a hedonist, a materialist. He wants to hold my hand! He should only hold my ghost hand, spiritual hand, not my real hand. This is just the r otten body." And he wants to hug you and you w i l l escape because this is that same rotten lust. You won' t allow anybody to approach you. And, naturally, when a person wants to have communion with you, he would like to hold your hand. It is not that he wants just to hold your hand - it

It is not necessarily so that it will be contacted, but there is no other way to contact it either, When he holds your hand, he is holding something of you - and there is no way to hold it without holding your hand. If he hugs you, he is hugging your soul; but the body is the visible part of the soul. It is through the body that you communicate. Even if silence has to be communicated, words have to be used. Words are the body of silence; silence is the soul. Even I have to use words, Buddha has to use words. Drop that conditioning. And drop the idea that this world is rotten, because if it is rotten then nothing is going to happen in it. You have already become prejudiced. Meditate over this anecdote: Cuthbert married a very refined virgin from an impeccable background, and took her away to Tunis for their honeymoon, On the first night in their hotel, Cuthbert quickly stripped off all his clothes and jumped into bed and then watched while his wife slowly removed all her garments. But Cuthbert vvas rather surprised when she clambered into bed completely naked except for her white gloves. "Why don't you take your gloves off?" he asked. "Because mummy said that I might actually have to touch the beastly thing," she replied. Now, this type of mind is not going to know w hat love is, This type of mind is closed, absolutely closed. And this type of mind is there in everybody, more or less.

there is nothing lower and nothing higher. The whole body is one, it is a unity. Accept it, welcome it, and you will start blooming, and you will start radiating love. And that radiating love will attract others towards you.You must not be attracting; you must have become very very repulsive. The idea that this world is rotten, that "I am not my body," that "I want some spiritual kind of love," are all wrong ideas. They will poison your whole life. And I know there is a love that goes far beyond the ordinary forms, but that love is not against the ordinary forms - it is based, rooted, in the ordinary forms. The tree goes very high in the sky and starts whispering with the stars, but it remains rooted in the earth. The tree blooms into beautiful flowers, but it remains rooted in the earth, in the dark earth, with a thousand and one roots, invisible. God is rooted in matter, the spirit is rooted in matter. Never be against matter. Once you create this dichotomy — matter and spirit - you are forever going to remain a schizophrenic. Bridge yourself. Come together! Become one piece. And out of becoming one piece, peace arises, love flows, life becomes a fragrance.

Ithe Holyoake Institute for Ad d ictions in East Perth and would like to share some of my observations along this journey. I was in a situation where due to bad health and relationship problems I felt at a loss. Every single day behaviour patterns emerged in me that I could recognise from my mother and grand-mothers. I felt trapped in com plaining about my situation, blaming and n o t b ein g a b l e to nurture myself. A little while later I had a look at the suggestion of a friend to try Co-depen

At that stage I could iden tify the following traits in my relating: I used to feel frightened and then manipulate my surroundings; I try to help others to change, to reach their potential; I was unable to focus on myself and state how I felt; I covered my problems under the veil of secrecy. Under-neath was a feeling of deep sadness and confusion about losses in my life. I like to add that I did not have a regular and enjoyable meditation practice then either. Anyway, after several weeks of • ago n i s i ng over the shame of seeing my pat • ter n s and having to admit to problems, I finally rang up Ho lyoake and booked in for the Focus Program. What was most beneficial for me was to learn about therapy as an instrument to learn life skills as well as going deeper into emotional states in a safe environment, Lectures that touched me most were on the topics "Grieving", "Family Dynamics", "Caretaking" (as opposed to caring), "Boundaries on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level" and last but not least the meditation that took place in every session. I feel now, 2 months later, after completion of the program, that I'm learning about relating from a space of honesty and self awareness. In the meantime I decided to commit myself to an enjoyable meditation practice and to accept help and nurturing from others instead of being the martyr, who sacrifices herself for others, continually pleasing and conditionally giving. I am sad that I have not started the program earlier. And I am excited to have started on the path of bringing awareness to co-dependent patterns and I am grateful to my sannyasin friends who pointed it out to me and gave me honest feedback. Literature that helped me:

r
f you missed Theatre Dinner July 15th at the Leela Centre, check out the photos, it was a lot of fun! Sometime after the Dinner Quiz Night (30 Sept at Osho Leela) it has been heard that there may be another
maniac production. Ever wonder how one of these efforts make it through to opening night? The ingredients to start: If you can get a group of sannyasins to meet at one place at the same time, please do let us know how you do it . Set an impossibly short deadline. It roi11induce actor anxiety. No plot & no script? No worries. Instead, take one director, one saxophonist and one video. Hope for a miracle.
would be good, too. The reason drama groups are so strapped for cash is that they provide group therapy absolutely free, The game of 'what if we ...' necessarily continues late into the night. And into a last ditch rehearsal before the show. And into the show. The audience loved it. So did the cast. That's how Annie and Justme and Mahdi, Vismaya and Susheela, Tony and his sax, Manaswi and Sujati, Pranava and KT came to surprise themselves. Good one Div. Osho took over for a while there, eh! +
N
ow, take a largish clean evening and mix the above, paying particular attention to the video (Casablanca). Sprinkle liberally with manic snacks. Remove the director (that' s our Divyarn) or, as she said, "stuff off and work something out amongst yourselves". Our Div eats panic on toast. Little cells of energy erupt all over the face of Freo, practising senseless acts of play and mindless creation. 'Line-up day' is when (almost) everyone gets together to discover that everyone else is going in some other direction. Witness the many and varied hues of post-line-up despair. Return the director to the mix. Our Div is a realist: she knows even grubs can make it to a butterfly, well ... make that a 'moth', She knows that when some serious camel tethering is called for, Allah has to be set aside for a spell. Slash and burn. Div quietly plugs in her toaster: "Er, ok guys. Now w hat if we just try changing ..." So off go our little cells of recharged energy to do their thing again. Then it's dress rehearsal time, already! Dress rehearsal means imagining what it w ill be like on opening night when all the props and costumes are said to appear. Like, the next evening!
