Ready to Learn about Dental Implants? What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically anchored into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place. The benefit of using implants is that they don’t rely on neighboring teeth for support and they are permanent and stable. Implants look and feel like natural teeth.

What is an Implant Support Denture?

While a regular denture rests on the gums and are not stable, An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants by special attachments for better fit and retention. There are two types of implant-supported dentures: bar-retained and ballretained. In both cases, the denture will be made of an acrylic base that will look like gums. Porcelain or acrylic teeth that look like natural teeth are attached to the base. Both types of dentures need at least two implants for support.

Your dentist can help you . . .

Can anyone receive dental implants?

Talk with your dentist about whether you are an implant candidate. You must have the proper bone structure for the implant to stay in place. People who are unable to wear dentures may also be good candidates.

What can I expect during this procedure?

The dentist must perform surgery to anchor the “artificial root into or on your jaw bone. The procedure is done in the dental office with local anesthesia. The gum is then secured over the implant, which will remain covered until it fuses with the bone. The dentist then uncovers the implant and attaches an extension, or post, to the implant. Finally, the dentist makes an artificial tooth, or crown, or dentures that attach to the implant post.

What is the cost of implants?

Dental implants for replacement of a single tooth are affordable and most dental and medical insurance policies cover portion of the cost. Your dentist can help you with this process.

Trying to wrangle Santa Claus for a photo shoot is no easy feat. We were two days away from going to print with this issue, and I still didn’t have a cover. We went through every variation of a holiday gift guide cover, but nothing seemed to work. In my 15 years of publishing, I had never been this close to deadline without having a cover; and for the first time in a very long time, I was nervous about finishing an issue. Then, in what I can only describe as divine dumb luck, while scrolling through Instagram (i.e. procrastinating in the office), I ran across an old Peanuts comics strip of Charlie Brown and Snoopy sitting on a bench, staring out into the sunset. And for some strange reason, I suddenly thought, “What if we got Santa Claus to come down and sit and watch the sunset from Royal Palms?” It seemed plausible, but I’d need a team to make it happen, and at this point, I had less than 24 hours. Naturally, I needed a photographer, so I called John Mattera and pitched him the idea and asked if he was available. He loved it and was all in, plus, he knew a “Santa Claus” (or a local variation of). Mattera made a call to Santa, and within an hour, the three of us were scheduled to meet the following

afternoon at Royal Palms State Beach. When we arrived at Royal Palms the following day, we weren’t sure what to expect. We’d been experiencing some amazing sunsets recently, so we were hoping for the same, but of course, on this day the clouds decided to take the afternoon off, negating any chance of capturing an Instagram-worthy dusk. Our Santa arrived on time, strolling down the pathway in a fresh out-of-thepackage traditional red and white getup, complete with a black belt and white beard, (which we actually used for his hair in the shot). As the sun began to set, we were on our way. Thirty-minutes later, Mattera got the shot. And now you’re holding the result in your hands. This job certainly has its moments, but few will top the scene of us conducting a photo shoot with Santa Claus (whose identity isn't a secret, but why spoil the fun here?), sitting on a concrete bench, holding an empty coffee cup, in the middle of November, all while capturing the perfect sunset shot in the process. And by George, I think we did it. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, San Pedro. Please remember to Shop Local this holiday season. spt Joshua Stecker is publisher/editorin-chief of San Pedro Today. HOMELESS FOR THE HOLIDAYS II by Anthony Pirozzi, Jr. This month’s column is a follow-up to last December’s subject, “Homeless for the Holidays.” I felt a follow-up was timely, not only based on the homeless impacts we are experiencing in San Pedro and across Los Angeles, but also because of the homeless population I witnessed while visiting my son, Vincent, at San Jose State. Many similarities exist, but it seemed that in San Jose, the homeless appeared to be less aggressive than what many have experienced here in Los Angeles. Some point to the rise in homelessness to propositions like Prop 47 (2014), which reduced felonies down to misdemeanors for “non-serious, nonviolent crimes,” and believe it effectively gives shoplifters and addicts the green light to commit crimes, as long as the merchandise they steal or the drugs they have in their possession are less than $950 in value. But homelessness can result not only from drug abuse, but mental illness, domestic violence, divorce, loss of job, and the inability to pay the rent or mortgage. It is a complicated issue that will not be resolved by one idea, but rather a multitude of ideas put into tangible actions that we must seek together. Although the saying “it takes a village” is sometimes followed by actions that indicate “but not in my village,” these challenges are being met with programs and initiatives that may begin to put a dent into this crisis. For example, the “Bridge Home” initiative launched by Mayor Garcetti is beginning to take root across Los Angeles. Councilman Buscaino recently opened the first Bridge Home Navigational Facility in our district in Watts. The center will temporarily house 100 homeless and assist them to navigate the services they need to lift them off of the streets. San Pedro and Wilmington will see similar navigation centers open in mid-2020. Also, construction is underway for a homeless storage facility to house homeless possessions up to 60 gallons. This facility is under construction between the John S. Gibson 110 north on-ramp and the Harbor Division Police Station. The main purpose of the storage facility and the navigational programs is not only to bring the much needed services directly to help lift 14 I SAN PEDRO TODAY I DECEMBER 2019

homeless off of the streets, but to enable existing laws to be enforced toward those homeless who don’t use these services. To counter criminalizing homelessness once the navigational centers and storage facilities are in place, one proposal that is making its way to the State Capital is by former Assemblyman Mike Gatto. Recently, Gatto submitted to the Attorney General for title and summary a ballot initiative that will radically change the state’s approach to homelessness. The initiative would treat certain existing crimes as intervention for help for the homeless while returning respect for the law to our streets. Under the system, certain crimes, like defecating on public transportation or using heroin or meth in public, would be strictly enforced. However, a special court would be created in major counties to determine whether a person committed those crimes due to economic need, a drug dependency, or mental-health issues. The court would then “sentence” the defendant to an appropriate treatment plan and connect the defendant to existing shelters and safety-net programs like general welfare, or require that the defendant participate in drug rehabilitation and treatment, or place the defendant in an appropriate mental-health hospital with access to free prescription drugs. It recognizes that many homeless people need help, but that some aspect of encouraging people to get help starts with forcing the issue. It also seeks to return respect for law and order, since many people feel there is currently a double standard for certain crimes, like indecent exposure. In the end, we are seeing this crisis in epidemic proportions only get worse, and it will not go away without new programs and approaches such as these. It is inhumane to allow this crisis to continue, as these are fellow human beings who need help, may not know how to seek help, and need us to address this head-on. What I have outlined in this column is a great start, but we have much more to do, especially in the area of prevention. Happy Holidays, San Pedro, and may God continue to bless you. spt Anthony Pirozzi, Jr. is a Los Angeles Harbor Commissioner. He can be contacted at apirozzi@yahoo.com.

It may not be the North Pole, but this building on 8th Street at Weymouth Corners is buzzing with activity. The Assistance League of San Pedro-South Bay, a non-profit agency, operates the only fully functioning all volunteer-run stand-alone post office in the United States. It has a small-town Mayberry feel where customers are warmly welcomed, and if you don’t meet a new friend, you will more than likely run into somebody you know. There are more than 350 volunteers who come from every walk of life at the Assistance League, including retired engineers and teachers. On the day I was there, a retired doctor from Kaiser was volunteering at the postal window. All volunteers must become members of the Assistance League, and if they want to volunteer in the post office, they receive specialized training. The Assistance League also has a gift and consignment shop that sells See’s Candy, amongst other gift items. All the money generated goes back into the community through their charitable work.

During the holidays, Christmas music plays in their holiday boutique, as volunteers keep busy in all areas of this large building. Since 1936, the Assistance League has devoted its efforts to the needs of families and to the blind in the community. Their philanthropic programs are supported by their gift and consignment shop, a U.S. Postal Service Contract Station, and fundraising efforts. One of their charitable programs is Operation School Bell. Children and their parents who are experiencing poverty meet Assistance League volunteers at Target and are given a $100 gift card that can be used for school clothing and shoes. Volunteers are on hand to help the children learn how to shop and provide support. Shopping events are held throughout the school year. Last year, they supported 1,624 children. By providing the families with gift cards, the children are treated with dignity and able to select new items of their choice. One child had been wearing a pair of shoes that had no soles, as they were handed down so many times. She was so happy to have new shoes that she started to cry, prompting the volunteer who was helping her to shed a few tears

herself. She no longer had to wear shoes that were falling apart thanks to Operation School Bell. Each child is also given school supplies and hygiene products. The Assistance League also operates a dental center for low-income children, which is open three days a week and serves 400 patients. An accredited dental team provides low-cost dental and orthodontic care to children ages six-months to 21-years-old. Dr. Momand, the dentist who runs the center, not only provides dental care, but also coaches her high school patients on their future, and discusses options like college, trade schools, and the military. Her whole child approach focuses on the well-being of every child she treats, and she addresses topics with her patients on vaping and eating too much sugar if she sees evidence of either while treating them. Clients pay through Denti-Cal benefits or a $10 fee. Weavers is another program run by the Assistance League and is for visually challenged adults. The Weavers attend a luncheon put on by the League every month, which includes musical entertainment and transportation to and from the event. Other philanthropic programs include Operation Hug,

which provides new teddy bears to children in hospitals. In addition, youth in 7th grade and up can become volunteers in the Assisteens program. Known as the best-kept secret in town, Assistance League volunteers are known to be very giving. “They are beyond generous. They give time and money, as they have to pay to be a member to volunteer,” states Michele Kielbasa, an Assistance League member. “The volunteers bring so much joy to the kids, the blind, and to the lowerincome families who cannot afford certain things that we maybe take for granted,” she adds. spt Assistance League San Pedro-South Bay is located at 1441 W. 8th Street in San Pedro and can be reached at (310) 832-8355. 2019 SAN PEDRO GIFT GUIDE compiled by SPT Staff

SAN PEDRANS KNOW HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO SHOP LOCAL.

It’s no secret that our strong, independent, multi-generational, small business community is the fabric that binds our town together. These business owners are our friends, family, and neighbors. They greet us by name when we walk through the door and say hi when we run into them at the grocery store. For San Pedrans, shopping local is very personal. We know how temping it is to spend your hard-earned dollars at the big-box stores during the holiday season. That’s why, for our very first official holiday gift guide, we’ve tried to make it easy for you to find local businesses that may be able to cater to all your shopping needs. As we discovered while putting this gift guide together, you can find something for everyone (including yourself) within our town’s small footprint. While this list is far from complete, we hope this gift guide encourages you to try and keep your dollars local as much as possible, not only during the holidays, but all-year round.

GIFTS TO EXPAND THE MIND Some gifts you can’t put a bow on — a sunset, a delighted expression, the joy of learning something new. Here’s a handful of ideas if you are thinking outside of the box (literally!) for the holidays. CRACK THE CODE If your child has a knack for technology, maybe gifting classes at Code Ninjas in Rolling Hills Estates could help encourage his or her technical skills. Serving kids ages 7-14, the coding school teaches children at their own pace the basics of video game and program development using game-based curriculum. 60 Peninsula Center, Rolling Hills Estates, (424) 903-0355, codeninjas.com/locations/ca-palosverdes. STEP IN TIME Sometimes the best gifts are the ones that take us out of our comfort zone. Few things do that more than dance lessons, and few dances are as intimidating as the tango. Fortunately, Silvia Askenazi, founder of Tango San Pedro, replaces the fear with fun. Dance lessons are the perfect gift for couples or singles wanting to learn something new (and meet someone new in the process). 601 W. 8th Street, (310) 9028503, tangosanpedro.com.

CREATE ON CANVAS If you know someone in need of a creative outlet, Parkhurst Galleries Oil Painting Classes could be a great choice to give someone a fulfilling, artistic experience. Taught by professional teachers, classes include lunch or dinner and the freedom to paint whatever you like. 439 W. 6th Street, (310) 547-3158, parkhurstgalleries.com. UNDER THE SEA It’s one thing to see whales breaching along our coast from the safety of the Point Fermin Park benches; it’s another thing to see them live and up close on a whale watching tour. If you’re looking to give someone an amazing life experience,

$5OFF!

GIFTS FOR A NIGHT ON THE TOWN You don’t have to get on a freeway to find quality entertainment. Catch the best in local music, theatre, and dance minutes from home with these gift ideas. NOTHING BEATS LIVE MUSIC The gift of music is always special, and San Pedro is fortunate to have a number of exceptional live music venues with programming that will appeal to anyone’s musical tastes. For a unique, intimate musical experience, a show at Alvas Showroom is not to be missed (1417 W. 8th Street, (310) 833-7538, alvasshowroom.com). Managed by the Grand Vision Foundation, the Grand Annex in Downtown San Pedro hosts world-class talent ranging from roots rock to jazz and world rhythms (434 W. 6th Street, (310) 833-4813, grandvision.org). SPEAK THE SPEECH Tickets to experience San Pedro’s thriving live theatre community are always a great gift idea. Little Fish Theatre in downtown is our town’s premier live theatre venue, mounting classic and contemporary plays year-round (777 Centre St., (310) 5126030, littlefishtheatre.org). For the kids, give them a dose of theatre magic by gifting them tickets to an upcoming performance by Encore Theatre Group at the Warner Grand Theatre (encoresouthbay.org). And don’t forget to get your tickets for San Pedro City Ballet’s 26th annual performance of The Nutcracker Dec. 1315 (sanpedroballetschool.com).

The Nutcracker

FOODIE FANATICS For most of us, the way to our hearts is through our stomachs, which is why giving gift cards to our local restaurants is probably the most ideal San Pedro gift one can give. With so many places and cuisines to choose from, there’s no doubt you can find the perfect spot to share with a loved one. Gift cards are available at most restaurant locations.

AHEAD OF HER TIME THE TALE OF MISS C. ROGERS by Angela Romero My favorite San Pedro stories involve love at first sight. I ran into a few of them this summer, meeting people who came to San Pedro for a party, for work, or looking for an affordable home and ended up falling in love with the community. I firmly believe that this town speaks to people: you either hear it or you don’t. It’s been speaking to people from the very beginning. It spoke to George H. Peck when he rode in on that first Southern Pacific train car, looked around and immediately saw the potential in the city. He ended up subdividing most of it himself. The Averill brothers, on an exploratory car ride, famously knocked on the door of the Dodson house wanting to buy the bulk of their ranch. This became the Vista del Oro development. These developers may have had dollar signs in their eyes, but in real estate, money invested is the purest form of love. Cys Rogers, San Pedro’s first female real estate agent has a similar kismet story with San Pedro. Miss C. Rogers, as she was known professionally, was a native of Cork, Ireland and a graduate of Trinity College in Dublin. In 1902, she was finishing up a trip across the United States on the west coast. Her plan was to return to New York and head home to Ireland after visiting with some relatives in Los Angeles. She was only supposed to be in L.A. for 24 hours. Her hosts told her she absolutely had to see Pasadena and the coastal towns. Whatever she saw on that drive caused her to stay indefinitely.

One of the only photos in existence of Miss C. Rogers' real estate office, circa 1909. Though Rogers is not pictured (and the gentlemen in the photo are unknown), you can see her name on the door on the bottom right. (photo: San Pedro Bay Historical Society)

Miss Rogers connected immediately with another dreamer, the aforementioned George H. Peck, taking a stenographer’s position with his firm. After only a few months working for Mr. Peck, Cys got a taste for real estate and set out on her own. By 1905, she was one of the first tenants in the brand-new Alexander Hotel on Beacon and 6th Streets. Miss C. Rogers Realty was a major advertiser. She made sure the business was mentioned in every daily paper. She had ads in city directories, and her bulletin board on Beacon Street had the most current listings. Miss C. Rogers handled real estate transactions for the biggest names in San Pedro, including her old boss, George H. Peck and even San Pedro’s grand dame, Rudecinda Sepulveda de Dodson. Miss Rogers represented Rudecinda when she offered up 400 acres to the University of California, who was looking at putting a campus here. To show exactly how close Miss Rogers was with the biggest landowners

in San Pedro, Rudecinda and Mrs. Mahar, another major property owner, jumped to Miss Rogers’ defense when she was initially accused of embezzlement, offering to post her bail before a docket had even been filed. After 15 years in real estate, Miss Rogers sold her business and focused on other projects, like cartography. She commissioned the most up-to-date maps of San Pedro, one even making it to the national archives. Besides mapmaking, Miss Rogers busied herself with making San Pedro a better place. Because San Pedrans are so enamored with their hometown, we all know someone full of ideas on how to improve it. Miss C. Rogers was that person of her time, and her prominence as a former major business owner amplified her voice so much that a few of her ideas actually happened. In nearly 40 years in San Pedro, she never missed a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. It was her favorite venue to share her ideas. Moving the Chamber of Commerce to the vacant Carnegie

Library building in Plaza Park was her idea, and she was more than happy to remind them when it happened two years after she suggested it. It was also her idea to name the northern boundary of Averill Park, Averill Park Drive. It had initially been called 12th Street, but it didn’t make any sense because it didn’t line up or connect with any other part of the street. In her prime, Miss C. Rogers was a force to be reckoned with. She even threatened to prosecute the person stealing her “for sale” signs to the fullest extent of the law. In her retirement, she used her extensive knowledge and understanding of San Pedro for the town’s benefit. In the end, due to bad investments, Miss C. Rogers relied on the kindness of her neighbors and died in the care of friends. Once she found San Pedro, she never let it go. spt Angela Romero is the founder of the San Pedro Heritage Museum. POLA BEARS DOWN FOR FIRST VOLLEYBALL CROWN GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM WINS 2019 CIF-LACS DIV. 4 CHAMPIONSHIP story & photos by Jamaal K. Street Last year, they were on the outside looking in. This year, everyone else is looking at them holding the championship trophy. Port of Los Angeles High girls volleyball finished tied for second place in the Imperial League for the 2018 season, but was left out of the CIFLos Angeles City Section Division 4 playoffs. But on Friday, the Polar Bears would complete a dramatic one-year turnaround by defeating East Valley of North Hollywood 22-25, 25-14, 25-23, 26-24 in the Division 4 championship match, winning the program's first girls volleyball title in their second final appearance. This was an amazing feat for a team that barely had tryouts when school began and had only two practices before their first match of the season against Foshay Learning Center back on August 26. “The amount of joy that filled my body was almost unexplainable,” POLA senior outside hitter Arelyz Marin-Matienzo said. “I was so glad that we accomplished this, and it’s definitely a memory I will never forget.” With only nine girls available on roster for the whole week, POLA (15-6 overall) rose to the occasion by outperforming their own abilities in their hard-fought victory over the Falcons (8-18-1). And no performance was greater than the effort put forth by senior middle blocker Kaylen Scott, who posted a career-high 26 kills to go along with four blocks. “Kaylen is

an outstanding player,” POLA junior outside hitter Lauren Brown said. “She is determined and always is a key player for our team.” POLA jumped to early leads in the first three sets, but East Valley was able to overcome their mistakes in the opening set and forced the Polar Bears into 11 attack errors and three net violations. With the score tied at 22, the Falcons would pull away late to seal the first set win. Once POLA settled down, it would take control of the match with a relatively easy second set victory, and Scott played a massive role with nine kills in that set. Scott delivered a thunderous kill off an East Valley player’s shoulder on a too-hot-to-handle spike at center net to set up set point in the second set. “I just kept hearing the crowd screaming and yelling; it pumped me up to slam that kill down,” Scott said. When Scott went out due to rotation changes, junior middle blocker Mia DiCostanzo stepped in and also produced the game of her life, as she finished the night with a career-high 12 kills and a pair of blocks to solidify the Polar Bears' strength up front that eventually overwhelmed East Valley. DiCostanzo was also a calming influence to the team whenever the

38 I SAN PEDRO TODAY I DECEMBER 2019

Falcons made their scoring runs, maintaining a positive outlook when things got bleak for POLA. “Mia always found the sweet spots on the court,” Brown said. “And whenever we got down on ourselves, Mia was always there to reassure me and everyone else that we got this.” The third and fourth sets both had the Falcons leading late, but the Polar Bears made fierce rallies at the end of both sets to seal the championship, with both sets ending with an emphatic kill from Scott. Freshman outside hitter Sasha Suggs was money down the stretch in the later stages of the fourth set, with a timely tip kill and a service ace which put the Polar Bears up 23-22. “I was really nervous at that moment,” said Suggs, who had four kills, four aces & 15 digs. “My goal was to get it over and place it. Thankfully God was on my side and watched over me.” After both teams traded service errors, Scott would finish off the championship with her last kill of the match which just dropped in front of the Falcons' front line after it was dug out once, and the Polar Bears were on cloud nine... literally. It took all nine girls in this match to produce the Polar Bears' ninth CIF-LACS sports championship this decade alone in what

is the first full decade for the San Pedrobased Charter high school being playoff eligible. “This truly feels unbelievable,” POLA junior setter Anaiys Lopez said. “We worked so hard this season, and it’s great to see how our dedication paid off. Finishing those last two sets showed how badly we wanted to win.” While Scott and DiCostanzo dominated the middle, the Polar Bears got valuable contributions from everyone who played, including Lopez delivering a career-high 46 assists to go along with four aces, as her serving led to the majority of POLA's points. Brown had four kills, 22 digs and two aces, while junior libero Kasandra Soria posted a career-high 29 digs and also served an ace. In all, POLA placed fourth in the more competitive Coliseum League, won one of many divisional championships in the large Maywood CES Tournament while in the CIFLACS Division 4 playoffs, defeated Gardena, Maya Angelou of Los Angeles and Los Angeles High in the prior three rounds before making history. “We really put our blood, sweat and tears into winning this championship together as a team,” Soria said. “I wouldn’t want to have won this title with any other team than this one.” spt

HEALTH & FITNESS

30-YEAR-OLD MAN-CHILD by Ricky Magana There are lots of things that hold us back from getting what we want. Sometimes those obstacles are real, tangible, external objects that stand in our way. But far more often, what holds us back is right between the ears. In our head. It’s some belief, or string of beliefs, we hold about the world (or ourselves) that constantly foils our attempts at getting the things we want. It’s like an invisible script we run over and over in our minds that predictably creates the results we get (whether we want those results or not). One such belief that I see lots of people struggle with is perfection. Nothing has kept people in the shallow end of life, swimming in mediocrity, more than the desire for things to be “just right” before we act. Or the idea that since you tried before but didn’t execute perfectly or weren’t a “natural,” it’s a sign that you’re not meant to do it. Perfection - and its cousin, analysisparalysis - will have you thinking you need to have all the right equipment, knowledge, tidy life circumstances, and credentials before you do anything. “Oh, I’m a 100% all-or-nothing kind of person. If I can’t do it right, then I’m not doing it... So I’m just gonna wait until I can.” I hear some variation of this all the time, and on its surface, it makes logical sense. And sure, there are some things you shouldn’t do without extensive planning and pedigree. But more often, it’s a socially acceptable alibi for procrastination. A way to veil your fear of change by calling it “high standards.” If you recall in the news a few years back, there was a story about the 30-year-old kid named Michael Rotondo who got an eviction notice from his parents. He stood there in court and in front of droves of microphones and media news coverage to make his case. His paraphrased position went something like, I want to move but my parents don't understand, 40 I SAN PEDRO TODAY I DECEMBER 2019

I’m still figuring things out… My financial situation hasn’t come together yet... I’ve got plans but they need some, er... they need some time. As a healthy adult male with no physical disabilities and clearly enough cognitive faculties to sue his parents, it was clear that Michael probably isn’t hatching the next billion dollar app in his bedroom. Rather, he’s cloaking his fear of having to grow up and accept all the scary responsibilities of adulthood, and his failure to thrive, with needing more time for his brilliant financial plans to realize. Maybe Michael actually believes his sob story, or maybe he’s just making excuses for himself, who knows. But what I do know is that he, like anyone else, will not get anywhere with his goals until he takes action. There are times when you won’t know the next step until you take the first one. We all have a little man-child in us. I’ve given myself (and others) elaborate, highly plausible reasons why certain things aren’t where I want them to be. And no one would bat an eye, but deep down, what I was really doing was delaying making a hard decision or taking a frightening first step that risked failure. We can all fool ourselves into thinking right now is not the time to get ourselves in shape. After all, it is the holiday season. It may be the worst time, actually. But it’s always possible to move forward. And if you can achieve progress through the holiday season, the rest of the year will be easy. Here’s a little secret I’ve learned: If you always wait until you’re ready and qualified or wait for the perfect time, you’ll never do anything. You act first. And by acting, you will trigger all your hidden resourcefulness and strength to figure it out as you go. You can’t truly “get ready” for most of the significant moves in your life. You have to just jump. And build the parachute on the way down. spt Heyday Elite Fitness offers a 2-minute scan that provides a full 1-page body fat analysis to help you tailor your fitness goals. PRIORITY OF THE SHEPHERDS OF SAN PEDRO by Pastor Nathan Hoff To the shepherds first, you came Night-shift workers who they all blame, Smelly, sketchy, suspect, shunned But lead their sheep antiphonally-tongued. “They just don’t fit with all of us They are awkward and can not discuss Normal things...and their habits? So strange. A different status.” But to the shepherds first, you came The angel’s antiphonal Gloria sang “To those on whom his favor rests” To Heaven’s priority, at Abba’s behest. And off they ran to see a Lamb The nativity of their rehabilitation program No matter what they all say Heaven’s priority has been revealed today. But in San Pedro our shepherds Are as rare as old fashioned “unclean” lepers So I wonder who could possibly be In 2019, Heaven’s priority? If you’d been born now, not then If you’d been born here, where would it have been? San Pedro Hospital, the room with a view? Hygienic, refurbished and almost like new? Doesn’t sound like your natal bed That filthy first place you laid your head And who would your very first visitors be Pastors and priests or the very wealthy? Doesn’t sound like your first guest register Signed by muddied hands of muddier character No, if you were born here and now We probably wouldn’t notice somehow. As your mom and dad went from door to door Asking for just a place on the floor Our Ring and Facebook pages would warn “Be careful—strange couple—they look forlorn.” So you’d finally make it down 7th Street Across from old Ante’s, where we used to eat Your papa would gain a used food box from a stranger Certainly not hygienic, but will have to be your manger. And just like it was two millennia ago The down and outs would be the first to know The priority of Heaven, those unexpected people and place Would once again be the priority of grace. Merry Christmas and the happiest 2020! spt Nathan Hoff is the Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in San Pedro. Follow his blog at: trinitypastor.blogspot. com.
