The Santa Barbara That Was, Through the Lens of Our Photographers

The year 2022 will go down as a year of reconciliation and recovery, as Santa Barbara and the world at large pulled itself out from the COVID pandemic and grappled with social, political, and cultural standards that continue to evolve at a breakneck pace.

That translated to many happy days: a return to live music and festivals, for instance, and a focus back on the arts, entertainment, and culinary scenes that make this region such a delightful place to live. But it also involved a lot of introspection: protests over rising rents and the removal of human rights, worrying about a needless war in Ukraine,

decisions about the kinds of leaders we trust to take us forward.

For the past 12 months, we’ve experienced the visual evidence of these matters primarily through the lenses of Ingrid Bostrom, Carl Perry, Matt Perko, Fritz Olenberger, and others. In our end-of-year tradition, we present the best examples of their work in this week’s issue, and we hope you enjoy a colorful, emotional look back at the year that was.

Alfred Noreen

ter; and all his progeny: four sons, a daughter, five granddaughters, five grandsons, three great-grandsons, and three great-granddaughters.

Alfred Noreen, a professional mechanical engineer who ended his career as an award-winning engineering professor, died on December 2nd in Santa Barbara. He was 97.

The cause was complications from a fall sustained two months earlier while he was gardening behind his apartment, according to his family.

On June 23, 1945, Mr. Noreen graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle with a degree in mechanical engineering; was commissioned as a U.S. Navy ensign; and married his high school sweetheart, Arlene Reilley.

Mr. Noreen began his engineering career at a General Electric jet engine factory in Cincinnati, Ohio. He then joined Boeing in the Seattle area, where he rose to the management level.

A memorial service will be held from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM on 2023-01-07 at First Presbyterian Church of Santa Barbara, 21 East Constance Avenue, Santa Barbara, CA.

Parade participants wave the Ukrainian flag in this June’s Summer Solstice Celebration, which returned after a two-year pandemic pause with an updated parade route along Santa Barbara Street.

The 2022 Santa Barbara International Film Festival saw the return of in-person screenings and tributes at venues such as the Arlington Theatre, where local Ukrainian activist Tatyana Taruta and Cinema Vanguard Award recipient Benedict Cumberbatch both sought to raise awareness and funds for relief efforts in Ukraine.

Gathering at the County Courthouse in June, Santa Barbara protesters blasted the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to an abortion.

In October, Santa Barbara’s Iranian community took over the corner of State Street and Cabrillo Boulevard to join in worldwide protests for women’s rights in Iran, with several women cutting off locks of hair in a symbolic show of solidarity.

UC Santa Barbara’s roughly 3,100 unionized academic workers were among the 48,000 employees across the UC system who went on strike for better pay and benefits this fall.

After two summers of severely scaled-back or canceled Fiesta events, Old Spanish Days returned in full force, with a renewed spirit and a brand-new parade route that drew thousands along Cabrillo Boulevard for the El Desfile Histórico and El Desfile de los Niños parades.

A beautiful Memorial Day weekend brought larger crowds than ever to the I Madonnari chalk-painting festival held in front of Old Mission Santa Barbara, which had been relegated to online photos and artists’ sidewalks the prior two pandemic years.

This year’s Summer Solstice Celebration themed “Shine” featured a full-fledged return that included brightly costumed dancers.

My foodie duties for the year wouldn’t be complete without summarizing activity at food & drink destinations on the South Coast. Undoubtedly this was a difficult year for many local restaurants as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, but some eateries came back with a bang like the days of yesteryear were just a bad dream.

BOOM TIMES: I started covering the local restaurant scene in 1994 with the launch of the SantaBarbara.com Restaurant Guide, but I only started keeping track of restaurant statistics when this column debuted 15 years ago, so that’s how far back my records go. Though 2021 saw the lowest number of restaurant openings on record, 2022 experienced a big comeback and nearly achieved the highest number of openings on record. In 2022, there were 51 openings (record high is 54) and 34 closings (record low is 30).

WELCOME BACK: Two huge reopenings occurred on the South Coast this year: Dutch Garden restaurant, an icon for more than 75 years, opened under new ownership and with a huge remodel. Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant, a favorite in Goleta since 1958, reopened after experiencing a kitchen fire in 2020.

FALLEN ICONS: Marty’s Pizza, a local icon since 1984, closed because its building had to be demolished as part of a bridge replacement project. Goleta Coffee Company closed after 25 years in business. Kai Sushi Shabu-Shabu downtown said goodbye after the serving the South Coast for decades.

FLASH IN THE PAN: Restaurants that both opened and closed in 2022 include Beans BBQ (six months, catering is still alive and well) and Texas Tacos (seven months)

(Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In the theater of ancient Greece, the term anagnorisis referred to a pivotal moment when a character discovered a big truth they had previously been unaware of. Another Greek word, peripeteia, meant a reversal of circumstances: “a change by which the action veers round to its opposite.” I bring these fun ideas to your attention, dear Scorpio, because I think 2023 could bring you several instances of an anagnorisis leading to a peripeteia. At the meeting of the City Council of the City of Goleta (“City”) held on December 20, 2022, the City Council considered and adopted an urgency ordinance that amends Title 17 (Zoning) of the Goleta Municipal Code (GMC) related to Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)

The City Council of the City of Goleta passed and adopted Ordinance No. 22-16U at a regular meeting held on the 20th day of December 2022, by the following roll call vote:
