From about 1971 until 2014, the home was owned by the nearby Unity Church, which used it for church activities. Among the activities were marriage ceremonies, some of which were held in the garden’s gazebo. The current owners told me that occasionally, a couple who was married there drops by to ask if they can visit the gazebo where they exchanged their vows. Present owners Robert (Bob) Fulmer and his wife, Patsy, had driven past the house one day. Bob remarked, “I really like that house. The location would be perfect for us. Plus, the verandas and columns make it look like our Southern heritage.” When the house went on the market, they bought it and have spent several years converting the house back into a comfortable home. They enjoy taking their dog to the nearby parks and walking to restaurants and theaters — in pre-pandemic days. here’s a church across the street, one around the corner, and another one just down the street. It’s therefore not surprising that the history of the house at 1626 Santa Barbara Street reflects the history of the neighborhood. For 43 years, the home was used for meetings by the Unity Church, and 100 years ago the house was the meeting site for a Spiritualist minister from Summerland. The home was built in 1904 for $4,000. It was described in the local paper as two-story with eight rooms. The home is a harmonious blend of Craftsman and THE GREAT HOUSE DETECTIVE Colonial Revival styles. When the house was finished, the local paper commented, “The interior arrangement and conveniences of this house have been favorably commented upon by all who have seen it.” The first owners were Charles T. Thayer and his wife, Florence. Thayer owned the Overland Stable at 110 East Carrillo Street. by Betsy J. Green According to ads in the local paper, you could rent a saddle horse for half a day for $1.50, or $35 for a month. Thayer owned his own horses, of course, and kept them in a barn and corral behind the house. The Thayers may have been the family that planted the enormous Moreton Bay Fig tree in the front yard, which is said to be the second largest of its kind in Santa Barbara.

A Spiritualist Minister in the Home From 1909 until 1918, the Thayers lived elsewhere and rented out the house. In 1918, I found three ads in the local paper for “Independent Spiritualist Rev. F.C. Williams will lecture and give messages” at the home. The phrase “give messages” meant communicating with deceased persons in the spirit world. Williams had previously practiced in Summerland. He was called “a master

If you are looking for a real estate team to help you sell or buy real estate in Santa Barbara and surrounding areas, I would like to whole-heartedly recommend Mike Richardson Realtors. My mother knew Mike and Kyle Richardson for years, not only as the top Realtor on the Mesa in Santa Barbara, but also as a trusted neighbor and friend. When the time came to sell her home, she knew there was only one agent she would list with. That was Mike and his team. Without a doubt, she was right. From the first meeting to discuss selling strategy through the close of escrow, Mike and Kyle were exemplary professionals every step of the way. I have had a fair amount of experience with RE agents buying and selling properties through-out my adult life, but no one even comes close to the level of service, integrity, knowledge and experience that Mike and Kyle provide. Mom’s place was a forty-two year old home. Although it had good “bones,” it needed some help to make it into a desirable, competitive property. Mike and Kyle knew exactly what needed to be done and who should do the work. Since I did not live in Santa Barbara, I needed an agent who had this kind of know-how and can-do attitude. Mike was not a stranger to a client like me who needed someone local to make this all happen. He and his team coordinated everything to get the home looking great and in ship-shape order. Plumbing, roofing, pest control, interior and exterior painting, landscaping, carpeting and floor buffing, power washing, estate sale, clutter removal and staging – he had the contacts to get the job done quickly and efficiently by honest hard-working people who charged very reasonable rates. They took an average decent looking home on the Mesa and turned it into a “Cream-Puff.” This transformation amazed our whole family! This needed makeover allowed us to get “top-dollar” for the property and kept the “days on market” to a minimum. But what impressed me the most was that Mike considered that coordinating makeover project as part of his job as the listing agent. I’ve never expected or even heard of such “beyond the call of duty” level of service from any real estate agent.

Most notably, Toby was the founder of CAR’s Housing Affordability Fund (HAF), a legacy which has grown and helped many into home ownership. Every year since its inception, REALTORS have donated to the fund, and this year the CAR Board of Directors contributed an additional $1,000,000 to further the HAF mission. Toby served extensively as a CAR and NAR Director, serving on many committees over the years, most notably on Taxation and Government

Finance. I remember being inspired by her as a newer CAR Director when observing Toby speak so passionately and eloquently at the microphone. She was so persuasive and influenced many positive outcomes. In fact, according to Bob Hart, our local SBAOR CEO, Toby was a proponent of tax portability long before the recent passage of Proposition 19 on this year’s ballot.

his week the real estate community lost a great leader and friend when Toby Bradley passed away on November 15. Toby served as President of our local Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS in 1992, and then went on to become the second female Treasurer for the California Association of REALTORS (CAR) in 2000 and 2001. When she served as CAR President in 2003, her mission was to create cultural diversity and inclusivity within the organization.

According to Diana Bull, another SBAOR and CAR past President/Treasurer, “Toby was highly respected at the National Association of REALTORS for her keen knowledge of real estate tax and finance legislation. We often debated strongly with each other on many issues, and then went out to dinner to laugh and share champagne!” Toby became a REALTOR in 1979 and created many friendships with clients and colleagues alike. The company has completed energy projects in 1,000 structures, mostly multi-dwelling buildings.
