Unite to Light Hosts Glow Gala

On October 6, Unite to Light (UTL) hosted its novel and inspiring Glow Gala, which raised awareness and funds for its work providing solar lights and solar chargers to people living without electricity. The event was part of a three-night extrava ganza at the Community Arts Workshop, which collec tively drew 425 guests. The second night was the Bright Bash party, and the third, the free Community Showcase.

At the intimate, formal Glow Gala, the evening began with a reception where guests mingled and checked out the interesting artwork. Each piece used light in a unique way, and 30 percent of sale proceeds went to UTL. Many of the 40 artists were students, but the roster included established artists as well, includ ing Marco Pinter, RT Livingston, and Rod Lathim.

Before dinner in the courtyard, President-CEO Megan BirneyRudert welcomed guests and related how when her team arrived at 8 a.m. that morn ing, they discovered a blown transformer meant there was no power. “Kind of ironic,” she noted with a smile, given the organization’s mission. A resourceful team ral lied to light up the event with a generator, so many guests were not even aware of the day’s challenges.

Birney-Rudert acknowledged many notable guests, including UCSB professor Shuji Nakamura, who received the Nobel Prize for the invention of the blue LED light, the key to white LED lighting. She explained how since inception in 2011, UTL has distributed 175,000 lights in 79 countries, and she highlighted some of this work.

Earlier this year, UTL supplied 3,900 lights and char gers to Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries and to Ukrainians still in country. Another 500 lights will soon ship to Ukraine Smart Aid International for distri bution to Ukrainian hospitals.

In South Africa, more than 9,000 lights have been dis tributed through a “light library” maintained by a school district. To help quantify the benefit of the lights, which

have allowed students to study after the sun goes down, UTL gathered graduation data for the three years prior and three years after the introduction of the light library and found a stunningly impressive 30 percent increase in graduation rates.

UTL is working with the University of California, the nonprofit Solar Sister, and the company d.light on a car bon offset project that will help people in Tanzania switch from kerosene lighting to solar lighting. UTL completed a pilot project in 2020, and a major project is planned to start next year.

While UTL’s focus has been on the developing world, the chargers have also been distributed in the U.S. to homeless individuals. From a small project with the Safe Parking Program here in Santa Barbara in 2019, the dis tribution ballooned during the pandemic because home less individuals were cut off from accessing their typical places to charge their phones, while at the same time needing their phones more than ever to communicate during the lockdown. In 2020, more than 3,000 chargers were distributed through partner organizations in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and beyond.

According to UTL, one in seven people live without electricity and rely on candles or kerosene lamps that are dangerous, polluting, and expensive. UTL focuses on projects that help children, midwives, disaster victims, and homeless individuals. The original light was designed by UCSB’s Institute for Energy Efficiency and UCSB’s Engineers Without Borders. It was later made waterproof and stronger, and UTL added a charger because of the importance of communication.

Most all of UTL’s lights and chargers are distributed through nonprofit partners, to whom UTL donates or sells at cost. This year, UTL has sent out more than 24,000 lights and nearly 3,000 chargers, with about a 30/70 per cent split between donations and sales.

A small percentage of sales are made through UTL’s “Buy One, Give One” program, where for every light/ charger it sells, it donates one. Lights and chargers can be purchased online at unitetolight.org

HALL-OWEEN PUMPKIN CARVING PARTY

The Hall Team from Compass is hosting their annual HALL-oween Pumpkin Carving Party over three days Friday October 28-Sunday October 30, from 4-8PM each day.

Both Friday and Saturday will feature a taco truck, and Sunday’s festivities will include a live band. Kevin and Lesley Hall and team host a community of friends and clients in their front yard at 3709 Capri Drive in Santa Barbara. This will be the 6th edition of this fun event.

Kevin Hall shared the logistics: “We’ll provide the pumpkins and carving tools! In addition to pumpkin carving, we’ll celebrate The Hall Team winning the Santa Barbara Indepen dent’s “Best Of 2022” in the category of “Best Real Estate Team” for the 4th year in a row. We’ll have Taco trucks both Friday and Sat urday as well as a band on Sunday.”

The Team collects donations - via cash, check or Venmo - for the Food Bank of Santa Bar bara County. All are welcome to come carve

a pumpkin, bring a donation or just enjoy popcorn, snacks, and a celebration of the season. world? Probably both. It has freed us from being totally dependent on experts and professionals. There is a wonderful transparency to the world now. The internet is the great equalizer. That’s a good thing. It has also burdened us with doing our own research and striving to make educated and informed decisions. That’s not so good. How many hours do you have in your day?

They are on the phone, showing properties and mak ing sure all details are correct. In short, agents are your advocates and will diligently work to solve problems. No app can replace that.

Q: With the emergence of the internet and search technol ogy, is a real estate agent really necessary in today’s world of buying and selling homes? What do you think? Are agents going the way of the dinosaurs?

A: Ouch! That hits close to home. However, it is a great question and one that has been asked frequently for the last decade or so. The role of a real estate agent in today’s information age has evolved.

Ijust returned from the California Association of REALTORS® (CAR) Fall Meeting in Long Beach. There was a lot of good information to come out of the three day meetings, and I will be covering all of that in next week’s article. This week however I would like to spotlight two amazing individuals that definitely went above and beyond their normal Herculean efforts to earn the very prestigious CAR Leadership Award

Would you represent yourself in court? All the information is available. What risk could there be? Why go to a doctor anymore? WebMD will diagnose your symp toms. You can buy your meds online. You could learn to set your own broken arm. Perhaps I exaggerate.

There has been an exponential growth in the complex ity of real estate transactions. Real estate agents today are professionals who study and research the market, economic trends, and local political conditions. That’s why sophisticated buyers, sellers, and investors utilize a real estate agent. Agents have had to keep current with the fast-paced internet environment. Clients today want instant answers and responses.

For most people, a real estate transaction is infrequent, emotional, and complicated. Most importantly, agents

Technological advances are a boon to the world of real estate. As I mentioned, there is transparency. The agent gains your trust by being forthright and honest and working hard. It also helps that now you can verify what you are being told.

The internet has brought down transactional costs in real estate. Today’s agents embrace that development. Research is now done online. Transactions are increas ingly done electronically.

So, to answer your question, yes, real estate agents con tinue to perform a valuable role in real estate transactions. We are here to serve, and we’re here to stay.

CAR LEADERSHIP AWARD

Krista and Marta knew that ALL coastal REALTOR® associations were dealing with similar issues when it came to sea level rising, dealing with the California Coastal Commission, costal zone constraints and many more issues. Unfortunately, there was no coordinated effort on behalf of all these individual associations on how best to tackle what seemed like a daunting challenge. But not to Krista and Marta.

This honor is bestowed sparingly each year by the President of the Cali fornia Association of REALTORS® and is given to people that exemplify the highest standards of excellence and effort for their fellow CAR members and the people they serve in the community.

This year two locals, Krista Pleiser, the Government Affairs Director for the Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS® (SBAOR) and Marta Golding-Brown, Gov ernment Affairs Director for the Ventura County Coastal Association of REALTORS® (VCCAR) were so honored.

They were presented with this award by Otto Catrina, 2022 CAR President, for their efforts in helping form Smart Coast California.

They took the “talk’ that was out there, took action and helped form Smart Coast California, a non-profit dedicated to ensure that the best interests of all of the stakeholders in preserving our valu able coastline were heard.

Smart Coast California was started to deal with the negative effects of climate change which if left unchecked would endanger the beautiful 1,200 mile coastline that we all enjoy and count on for valuable resources.

Smart Coast California now works hand-in-hand with local and state agencies to ensure our rights as property owners and visitors are protected. Using multiple strate gies (because no one size fits all will work) to adapt to this ever-changing climate, which is causing sea-level rise, ensures that all parties (I.e., property owners, local gov

ernments, businesses and visitors) can enjoy our precious coastline for generations to come.

Smart Coast California encourages local municipalities and state agencies to listen to all parties and understand that there are strategies that can prove successful other than simply “retreat” when the sea level rises.

For if we do just “retreat,” and abandon our coastline, where will we live? Where will our harbors and ports go? How will millions of Californians and countless visitors from elsewhere be able to dip their toes in the California sand?

We desperately need to make sure that we keep our coastline beautiful and pristine with smart land use poli cies for generations to come.

Smart Coast California now has a staff, a full Board of Directors and grant funding that has allowed it to expand beyond the initial contributions of the Local Associations of REALTORS®. All of this, and much more, is because of the vision, passion, dedication and tieless hard work of Krista and Marta.

Krista and Marta are two shining examples of our local association staffs that support all REALTORS® each and every day. They work diligently behind the scenes for the people that live in our communities.

They should be congratulated for a job well done as well as a big thank you to the California Association of Realtors for recognizing the incredible job that they have done and giving them the CAR Leadership Award.
