Curves Are Making a Comeback

Ifyou follow any interior designers on social media or peruse home décor magazines, you’ve likely noticed an increase in curved furniture over the past few years. And this year, it seems that the curved lines are every where. From arched bookshelves and consoles to rounded sofas and curved-back chairs, rounded furniture is having more than just a moment. It’s having a grand party and we’re all invited to the festivities.

At first, I thought these curved pieces would vanish as quickly as they came in. But I was wrong, and I’ll gladly admit it. Curved fur niture simply feels more welcoming than its contemporary counterparts. The simple, sleek lines that have dominated furniture design for the past several decades are being replaced with softness and whimsy, and some of the curved chairs I see lately look literally like a hug.

Whereas curved sofas and furniture were popular in the ’70s and ’80s, the alluring Ser pentine sofa, designed by Vladimir Kagan, made its debut in 1950 and quickly became a status symbol in the design world.

After a little research, I learned that Kagan designed the snake-like shape to allow clients to showcase their art in their home’s interior. By bringing the sofa into the middle of the room, Kagan was able to create space for cli ents to view and appreciate their larger-scale works of art.

Kagan also wanted to foster face-toface interactions and apparently compared people sitting on a straight sofa to “birds on a wire.” His creation was a semicircle that bulged at one end and snaked around in an s-shape, providing flexible group seating and a focal point for entertaining.

Today’s curved sofas are coming in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but if you’re not ready to invest in a larger piece like a sofa, rounded options are showing up in all furniture categories like side tables and bookcases.

One might argue that the global pan demic has us all craving these cozy curves, or perhaps it’s that the clean, straight lines that have been the norm for the past few decades are just simply, like a pair of jeans, cycling out of popularity. Whatever the reason, I, for one, am excited about anything that encour ages a good party and lively conversation!

“I have now purchased, leased, and sold a property with Jason and in all three transactions I could not have been any happier with his professionalism and the results. He always kept me in the loop with his great communication skills and took the time to make sure all of my questions and concerns were addressed. Whenever I was hesitant during the transaction process, I felt like he wanted to make sure I felt good about the decision before moving forward. UCSB Arts & Lectures Hosts Donor Reception Before SWING OUT Show

On October 8, UCSB Arts & Lec tures held a lovely Producers Circle reception and dinner in the Arlington Courtyard prior to the entertaining Joyce Theater’s produc tion SWING OUT at The Granada Theatre. It was the first gathering for this group of major donors, who help make possible the lectures, performances, community out reach, and education that Arts & Lectures provides to the community.

About 45 guests enjoyed mingling and celebrating the new season.  After a dinner catered by Via Maestra 42, Miller McCune Executive Director Celesta Bil leci welcomed and thanked guests, includ ing a special shout-out to her major dance sponsors, whom she dubbed her Dance Posse: Margo Cohen-Feinberg and Bob Feinberg, Audrey and Timothy O. Fisher, Ellen and Peter O. Johnson, Barbara Stupay, and Sheila Wald.

Then Caleb Teicher, the production’s acclaimed choreographer, addressed the gathering and answered questions. Teicher shared how he often does not like dance: “I have become very prickly in my old age.” So he set out to make dance shows that would feel as good as dancing feels so the audi ence’s experience is as meaningful as that of the dancers. SWING OUT, he related, is the closest he has gotten to success.

He expressed gratitude to the guests for allowing the show, which highlights the present day practices of the Lindy Hop, to come to Santa Barbara, its thirteenth city.  With pride, he shared how the most famous swing dancers in America are all

in the show.

With 12 dancers and Eyal Vilner’s 10-piece  Big Band, SWING OUT capti vated the audience. Post-intermission, many guests enthusiastically enjoyed the Jam Session, where they were invited onstage with the performers. Audience members of all ages a couple of hundred in all took turns dancing onstage with the Big Band, then they formed a circle around the professionals for a final, upclose show.

In addition to the Granada perfor mance, the dancers did five community outreach activities while in town. They conducted two workshops for Santa Bar bara High School students; taught at S.B. Friday Night Swing Dance at the Carrillo Recreation Center a session that drew 140 community members; Teichler did a master class with UCSB Dance Depart ment students;  and company dancers did a performance on the history of the Lindy Hop for a UCSB dance history class.

More than half of all visiting artists and lecturers engage in some form of outreach or educational activity.  Recently, the Ukrai nian group DakhaBrakha held an in-depth discussion with a UCSB music class. This week, the Soweto Gospel Choir will per form for about 1,200 K-7 students at The Granada Theatre.

Arts & Lectures relies heavily on com munity support to sustain its lectures, per formances, and community outreach and education. The higher donor levels come with lots of perks, like this reception and dinner.

Insect

Might Be Our Best Plastic Recycler

found that the enzymes or proteins in the waxworm saliva led to the rapid break down of polyethylene plastic. These are the first animal enzymes that we know about to degrade plastic, and they do it in a matter of hours and at room temperature.

Because plastic is made to be durable, it is a ubiquitous waste product in our environment, polluting seafood, water, and even human blood streams. Over time, it eventually breaks down into small particles, ultimately becoming micro- and nano-plastic pieces. These particles are found everywhere, from Ant arctica to raindrops to tap water, and are posing a growing problem to human health.

10 percent of all plastics on the planet are recycled.

The waxworm’s saliva enzymes oxi dize plastic fast and without fossil energy. The only downside could be the release of carbon dioxide if billions of plasticmetabolizing insects are exuding saliva on plastic. More research is needed, but current research suggests scenarios where plastic waste can be “bio-recycled” and eliminate the release of microplastics into the environment. There are indi cations that these enzymes might yield useful chemicals as part of the degrading process, or even with additional process ing steps, become new plastic molecules, negating the need for virgin plastic pro duced from petroleum.

The rapid decline of bee popula tions, native and European, is well-known. For beekeepers, one of the threats to our hives is waxworms or wax moths. A hive weakened by pesticides can easily become infested by wax larvae.

A few years ago, Dr. Federica Bertoc chini, a microbiologist and amateur bee

keeper in Spain, made an accidental discovery when cleaning out her waxworm-overrun hive. The larvae were not only chewing through the plastic bag she had put them in but were also dis solving the bag chemically. She and fel low scientists investigated exactly how the insects accomplished this feat. They

Polyethylene bags and other products make up 30 percent of all plastics. In the environment, they break down over hundreds of years through a process known as oxidation. The only large-scale recycling of plastics happening today involves mechanical processes of gly colysis, pyrolysis, and/or methanolysis, all requiring a great amount of energy. Even with these approaches, only about

As saliva enzymes start breaking down plastics at scale, the processes will need to be contained to ensure that our valuable bee colonies are not further threatened.
