The Eye-Magnets of Santa Barbara and the History Behind Them
Exploring the historically rich Old Town of Santa Barbara is a great way to spend a Saturday morning. Guided by John Ummel, a new free walking tour through the heart of downtown will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the city’s cultural and historical center.
Ummel has curated tours for three different parts of Santa Barbara and said he was inspired by the walking tours that are common in Europe. The newest one explores the city’s deep roots in history and architecture along the 400, 500, and 600 blocks of State Street, the Brinkerhoff district, and the modern masterpieces from the awe-inspiring mind of architect Jeff Shelton. Fifteen stops and an hour and a half later, I was ready to learn more about all of Santa Barbara thanks to this extremely walkable tour.
At 10 a.m. sharp, I met Ummel and the other four members of my tour group on the 700 block of State Street. My excitement grew as we walked and made frequent stops, listening to Ummel’s fascinating descriptions. As a student at UC Santa Barbara, I was often in Santa Barbara but had never paid attention to the many places Ummel showed us. The buildings and architecture I saw but didn’t really notice were now lit up before my eyes with history, culture, and stories. I developed a new desire to dine at Joe’s Café, the longest-running restaurant in Santa Barbara, and to stay at the historical Hotel Santa Barbara, which has been rebuilt but has remained a hotel from its early days as the Mascarel Hotel in 1856. With every stop along the way, Ummel showed us old photographs and images of the very places we were seeing, which brought a deeper understanding of the times in which they were created.
The history of the architecture in Santa Barbara was a huge feature of this tour and a point of interest. I learned about the Spanish colonial style seen throughout the city, and its beginnings when Bernhard Hoffmann and Pearl Chase teamed up to create a uniform architectural style and designated zones where the streets should look like ones you would find in Spain. Ummel pointed out that this style has been re-coined to “Santa Barbara architecture,” serving as a blueprint for many other cities, such as Sacramento.
Among the highlights of the tour were three of Shelton’s elaborate and picturesque buildings, which are now wonders of Santa Barbara and truly eye-magnets. Also magnificent were the homes of the Brinkerhoff district, erected during the Victorian era and fascinating to learn about.
As the tour concluded on the corner of Haley and State Streets, I asked Ummel what had inspired him to organize this tour. He answered that he wanted to “incorporate these lower blocks of State Street that a lot of people avoid” and that about 600 hours of research had gone into the facts and images of the past he had made into a fun and engaging experience. Thanks to him, these and other destinations in Old Town are now places of significance to me and places to appreciate for their culture and deep-roots in Santa Barbara.
Learn more about free tours of Santa Barbara through John Ummel’s tour groups at FreeWalkingTourSB.com, or call (650) 675-4145 and leave a message. Waterfront and Funk Zone tours are also on offer.

Cancer Foundation Hosts Dinner with Siddhartha Mukherjee
On March 8, the Cancer Foundation of S.B. County (CFSB) hosted an illuminating and enjoyable dinner with Pulitzer Prize–winning author and cancer physician Siddhartha Mukherjee. Afterward, Mukherjee gave a talk on his latest book, The Song of the Cell: An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human, at The Granada Theatre, co-presented by CFSB and UCSB Arts & Lectures. The Cancer Foundation is the fundraising partner of Ridley-Tree Cancer Center.
SOCIETY MATTERS
This intimate gathering of 60 Cancer Foundation supporters, many of them physicians, and Arts & Lectures donors at Villa & Vine (formerly Petros) began with a reception in the courtyard, followed by a Q&A session with Mukherjee and a three-course meal.
Arts & Lectures Miller
McCune Executive Director Celesta Billeci and CFSB Executive Director Lori Willis welcomed guests and Mukherjee, who casually addressed questions from the center of the courtyard. Mukherjee demonstrated the ability he is known for clearly explaining complex medical concepts. In 2011, Mukherjee won the Pulitzer Prize for his book The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer
The first and most interesting question was about the ability of viruses to mutate. Mukherjee explained that viruses need to make copies of themselves to reproduce, and those that are very error-prone tend to mutate very quickly. HIV falls into this category. COVID, thankfully, does not. However, two other factors also affect a virus’s ability to mutate: the number of viral particles that are made and how infectious the virus is. COVID both has a high number of viral particles and is highly contagious. Thus, it evolves. Even though the error rate is very small, Mukherjee explained, the number of viruses that contain errors is large enough to accumulate mutations.
Mukherjee also spoke at length about his research on modulating insulin, which is the body’s response to sugar. There is considerable evidence suggesting that high levels of insulin are related to the incidence of cancer and the growth of cancer. He suspects that one reason pancreatic cancer is particularly challenging is that it is bathed in insulin.
Earlier in the day, Mukherjee spoke with a group of 45 physicians from Ridley-Tree Cancer Center (RTCC), UCLA, and Cottage Hospital at RTCC’s Wolf Education & Training Center. Moderated by Dr. Charles Conway, the event provided an informal opportunity to ask questions and engage in a dialogue about cancer.
Founded in 2012, the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara ensures that RTCC continues to provide a comprehensive, high level of cancer care and relies on community support to fulfill its mission. Most CFSB funding goes to RTCC, though it also partners with other organizations. This year, it has already granted more than $3.5 million to RTCC and nearly $200,000
to others. Last year, it granted nearly $2.9 million to RTCC and nearly $200,000 to others.
In 2015, CFSB and Sansum Clinic raised more than $48 million to construct the state-of-the-art RTCC, which opened in 2017. CFSB is currently working on the $8 million Phase II of the project providing technological and cosmetic upgrades to RTCC’s Nuclear Medicine Department, which is at Cottage Hospital. Last year, construction work was completed and a
digital PET/CT scanner, which provides significantly enhanced images for physicians, was purchased. By next year, a new SPECT camera and other upgrades will be made.
Arts & Lectures relies heavily on community support to sustain its lectures, performances, and community outreach and education. More than half of all visiting artists and lecturers engage in some form of outreach or educational activity.

My Seller Is a Hoarder
Q: Marsha, as a fellow Realtor, I enjoy your articles. Now, I have a question for you. I received a referral to a seller from a divorce attorney. I visited the home, and the husband is a hoarder. It’s a great neighborhood, but the home looks like a disaster. The front and the back yard are full of discarded and broken junk. You can barely walk through the home because of all the stuff. This is a divorce sale. I’m at a loss on how to market or even show the house. Do you have any advice?
A: In my long real estate career, I have only worked with one seller who had hoarding disorder. Hoarding is a mental disorder, and hoarders and their spouses rarely put their homes on the market. The idea of selling their home and discarding or moving their possessions is overwhelming. A divorce sale is a must-sell situation, so you will need to work on a plan with this seller.
First, I suggest that you market the home by appointment only. It’s a divorce sale and already a tough situation for the sellers. Public open houses and Realtor caravans will increase their stress. When I appraised homes, I could anticipate when the property needing an appraisal had a hoarding issue. The owners would make and break appointments several times. They dreaded welcoming a stranger into their home.
Second, price the home to sell quickly. Explain the situation to agents who want to show the home. Potential buyers will need to move through the cluttered home and try to look past all the stuff. Realistically, the only way to clean up the home is to get into a contract and give the seller a
Message From the President
specific deadline. Another solution is to suggest to the divorcing couple to take what they need, and the new owners will deal with the rest. They can just walk away from the mess if they choose.
When I worked with a seller with hoarding disorder, I dreaded the physical inspection. I assumed by the cluttered condition that the home would be in serious disrepair. This was not true at all. The seller had maintained the house’s infrastructure. They had kept up with pest repairs, a new sewer lateral, put in copper plumbing, and upgraded the electrical systems. The truth was that the house was fine. Never assume anything. It took a weekend of clearing the home, cleaning, and painting, and it became a wonderful home for the new owners.
Hoarding disorder affects all levels of society. There is a story about a wealthy local man who kept buying houses for the sole purpose of putting more and more of his stuff in them. He never lived in these homes; he just filled them with his ever-growing amount of belongings.
According to the American Psychiatric Association, hoarding disorder afflicts 2 to 5 percent of our population and can affect all types of people. Working with your seller
will require sensitivity to their disorder. I suggest reading more about the problem.
I hope my suggestions help. Your listing will sell, the couple will move out, and the refreshed home will welcome new owners.

VINTAGE MOTORING IN SANTA BARBARA
Oneof the best ways to see Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley is by car. Cruising around and taking in that fresh ocean air, checking out the incredible architecture, and stopping into all of our amazing restaurants. Better yet, do it in a vintage classic car; that is where AACA comes in!
Since its founding in 1972, the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) has gone a long way. The club initially supported a successful national tour in 1976. Yet, over time, the club shrank to a core of 6–8 members. When Dana Newquist joined the club 20 years ago, things were like this. Thank you to Dana for some details about the AACA and some history behind it. Below is some great information about a very fun and active community of enthusiasts in Santa Barbara.
Like any newcomer, Dana was passionate about vintage and antique vehicles. After a few meetings, the club's then-president, Jeremy Hass, approached him about taking over the club's leadership. Dana agreed to the offer but soon understood how difficult it would be. The club was small, and he needed to build it up from scratch.
Dana started by concentrating on the caliber of the meetings. He was aware that more people would join if he could secure some notable speakers. Dana was aware that not everyone was interested in technical details like rear-end ratios and carburetors. As a result, he saw to it that the speakers were picked for subjects that would interest all of the members.
Dana's second action was to make an effort to make the group more all-inclusive. Dana was well aware that collecting vintage and classic cars is not just for men. He, therefore, made sure that women felt welcome to join the club and that the programs and topics catered to all audiences. This approach worked, and the number of members started to increase gradually.
The AACA Santa Barbara Chapter has more than 100 members today and is continually expanding. A fantastic core group at the club has decided it's time to stage a new national tour. The Santa Ynez Marriott will serve as the tour's home base
from September 25 to September 29. This marks an important turning point for the club and is evidence of the effort and commitment of its members.
The AACA is not just about cars; it's about a sense of community and camaraderie. Members of the club share a common interest and bond over their love for antique automobiles. They attend events together, share stories and experiences, and learn from each other. The AACA is more than just a club; it's a family.
AACA meets the last Monday of every month at 5:30pm, Pilgrim Terrace (649 Pilgrim Terrace Dr. Santa Barbara, CA 93101 (off Modoc). A delicious buffet is available for dinner for an additional fee. Every month a special guest is invited to discuss topics important to our members. It has been nearly 50 years since the Santa Barbara Region hosted a National Tour. Classic cars will be coming from all points of the US to join.
To best get more information, to look into joining and a description of the Tour, please go to AACA SB website. https://www.aacasb.org/
Looking forward to seeing all of these beautiful cars on the road around Santa Barbara. Thanks again to Dana Newquist for the insight into a really cool local club.
