A Craftsman Home Amid the Stone Pines
The 400 East block of Anapamu Street is one of several blocks on this street that are lined with iconic Italian stone pines. According to an article in this paper by historian Michael Redmon, the pines on this block were planted in 1929. These trees are sometimes called Doremus stone pines because Dr. Augustus Boyd Doremus of the city’s Parks Commission promoted the planting of these trees.
A Home with a Graceful Design
The home at 420 East Anapamu was built about 1924 by Augustus R. Drexel. He owned a lime and cement company, so it’s not surprising that the home is accented with a graceful swoop of a concrete porch railing. The Historic Structures/Sites Report for the home was written by Fermina B. Murray, who noted, “The graceful design of the porch railing topped with overhang cap and the way it curves up to meet the columns also brings to mind elements of the Japanese architecture that the renowned Greene brothers and Bernard Maybeck adapted into their Craftsman designs.”
And Then Came the Quake
Drexel and his wife, Minnie, moved to Santa Barbara in 1919 a time when the post–World War I building boom was in full swing. He, apparently, felt that no quantity was too large or small for orders of lime or cement his ad read, “One sack or a train load.” And Drexel was in the right place at the right time to help rebuild Santa Barbara after the 1925 earthquake.
It’s probable that Drexel built this home. It was built
shortly before the earthquake and does not seem to have been affected by that event. Because of the 1906 earthquake that caused so much damage in San Francisco, most structures in Santa Barbara that were built after that date were built with earthquakes in mind. Most of the devastation in our downtown area occurred to older structures.
This home would have been in a busy area of the city after the quake because there was a large encampment of U.S. Marines on the grounds of Santa Barbara High School just a few blocks away. I asked historian Neal Graffy for a sneak peek about the Marines from his next book, The Great Santa Barbara Earthquake The Disaster That Built a City
Here goes: “At noon on Wednesday, July 1, 1925, 300 Marines left San Diego by train and arrived at the Santa Barbara station at 8:30 p.m. A fleet of trucks carried the rations and tents to the new Peabody Stadium at Santa

Barbara High School, where ‘Marines in charge of the commissary department set up the officers’ quarters and commissary tents in the dark and then sent word to the station.’ To the delight of the public who had gathered to watch the proceedings, the marines ‘marched’ and ‘double-timed’ it up State Street to the stadium where the rest of the men had to set up their own pup tents. Within three hours of their arrival, they were out patrolling the streets.” Remember folks, you read it here first in this column.
A Very Good Sign
The Drexel family owned the house for 20 years. The next owners lived here for 60 years. Roy and Helen Wickstrum and their family lived in the home from 1944 to 2004. Roy was a physics teacher at of course Santa Barbara High School. The family liked the house just the way it was. Again, from Murray’s report, “It bodes well for the house that a family lived in it for over half a century without altering it.”
Paul and Mary Genis bought this home in 2018. They felt that their existing furniture was not compatible with this home’s Craftsman style, so they bought new furniture to match the home’s style. They asked local artist Judy Nilsen to stencil a period-appropriate floral border in the home’s main hallway. The Genises enjoy the home’s downtown location and the spacious wraparound porch, which is ideal for entertaining or just lounging and admiring the pine trees.

One805 Presents Grants to First Responders
On March 29 at the Montecito Club, One805 pre sented about $240,000 in grants to first responder agencies throughout the county. This nonprofit, founded in the aftermath of the Thomas Fire and 1/9 Debris Flow, boasts an advisory board comprising all 11 first-responder chiefs in the county.
After the cocktail reception, two of the event cofounders, Richard Weston-Smith and Kirsten Caven dish Weston-Smith, welcomed the group of about 100 supporters, potential supporters, and first-responder chiefs. Kirsten related how the 1/9 Debris Flow made the One805 founders realize how dangerous first responder jobs are and motivated them to raise funds to support first-responder agencies throughout the county.
Presenting the awards was boardmember Barney Melekian, who last year stepped down as S.B. interim police chief and previously served as S.B. County under sheriff and as Pasadena acting fire chief and Pasadena acting city manager. Melekian explained that One805 originally was focused on equipment, but in the past couple of years, it has become apparent that providing mental wellness support for first responders and their families is absolutely critical. So, the largest check went to fund one year of counseling for all firefighters in the county and their families. A single, generous donor stepped forward to fund this commitment with a $144,000 donation.
The remainder of the grants were for equipment: $41,000 to the Guadalupe Fire and Police Departments for a generator, which the city previously lacked; $40,000 to the Sheriff’s Office for new dive masks, whose need was made apparent with the Conception dive boat disaster; $13,000 to the Santa Maria Police Department for masscasualty first aid kits; and $1,800 to the Santa Maria Fire Department for Rosetta Stone translation software to help EMTs in delivering services to the non-English-speaking community.

County Sheriff Bill Brown noted that he has worked in many jurisdictions, and he has never experienced the collaborative effort, camaraderie, and friendship that exists both between the members of the different public service agencies and among the executive leaders of the agencies in our county.
were part of the group that put on the Kick Ash Bash after the Thomas Fire and debris flow. Proceeds from that event, which featured Katy Perry, Kenny Loggins, Alan Parsons, and many other stars, funded three mobile command posts one each for the S.B. County Sheriff’s Office, the S.B. Police Department, and the county’s fire departments.
One805 founders then decided to support first responders on an ongoing basis, holding events to raise funds and to provide entertainment for first responders. No agency in the county, Brown noted, has an adequate budget to obtain some of the most important things it needs. Thanks to One805, he added, they have received some extraordinary equipment.
In praising the mental wellness services One805 now funds, Brown shared the axiom that “if the people who take care of other people are not taken care of, we are all going to be in trouble.” S.B. County Fire Chief Mark Hartwig emphasized the importance of culturally competent counseling, relating how when a member of his department needed counseling, he found little help with counselors provided by his insurance company. By contrast, the team retained by One805 has that cultural competency to assist first responders with their particular needs.

Kirsten Cavendish Weston-Smith shared how One805 doesn’t do formal fundraisers, but rather, “we are all rock and roll,” denim and dancing, The next event is One805Live at Sunstone with Ed Roth and the Session Kings. An afternoon event at Sunstone Winery in Santa Ynez, it features six top musicians, including Andy Vargas, lead singer of Carlos Santana for the last 20 years. On September 22, Maroon 5 and others will perform at Kevin and Christine Costner’s oceanside estate in Summerland. Tickets for both events are on sale now.

A POSITIVE OUTLOOK ON SHORT-TERM RENTALS
Short term rentals and the city of Santa Barbara have a love-hate relationship. Lately, the city has been looking at "cracking down" on those that are operating "illegally". There are many sides to this story, and I can understand and am aware of the arguments by those on both sides. Those that want them to stay and those that don't want them or only in particular areas. .
I think a clear, common sense city ordinance with some easy-to-follow rules, locations, perhaps a particular number of them available to be permitted, and a straightforward way for those to apply for them, makes a lot of sense. We are missing this now with a lot of confusion around them. This article explores some of the pros of short-term rentals;, those properties rented for under 30 days.
To state an obvious - but sometimes overlookedpoint in this conversation: Santa Barbara is a tourist town and a highly sought-after vacation destination known for its beautiful beaches, scenic coastline, and mild climate. In recent years, short-term or "Airbnb" rentals have become increasingly popular around the world. Just like many cities, Santa Barbara currently has a mix of hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and shortterm rentals that co-exist to allow visitors to choose how they would like to stay while visiting this amazing area.
Short-term rentals offer visitors more affordable and often larger accommodation options compared to traditional hotels. Santa Barbara is known for its luxury hotels and resorts, which can be quite expensive, espe-
cially during peak tourist season. Airbnb rentals, on the other hand, provide a range of options to fit different budgets. Visitors can find everything from cozy apartments to spacious beachfront homes. Airbnb rentals also often offer more amenities than traditional hotels, such as full kitchens, laundry facilities, and outdoor spaces. This can help save on dining and entertainment, especially helpful for group travel.
Short-term rentals can help support the local economy. Many Airbnb hosts are local residents who rely on income from short-term rentals to supplement their income. By choosing to stay in an Airbnb rental, visitors are directly supporting these hosts and contributing to the local economy. Short-term rental owners "should be" paying the 12% TOT (Transient Occupancy Tax) to the city. This would be gladly paid for with clear ordinances by those wanting to run a short-term rental. Currently, many of the "illegal" shortterm rentals do not pay because they do not want to be known by the city. This additional income with clear guidelines would greatly help our city address bigger issues of homelessness, our downtown corridor, roads, drainage, and more. Plus, visitors who stay in Airbnb rentals are more likely to spend money at local restaurants, shops, and attractions, further boosting the local economy.
Lastly, in times of crisis or evacuationswhich have been more prevalent in the past number of years - short-term rentals offer our very own locals a place to go. As a REALTOR® with clients in evacuated areas, I helped find these locals homes to stay in with hotels booked solid by putting them in short-term rentals many times over the past few years. I was also proud to assist with housing for 12 out-of-the-area police officers through a client who has a house they rent short-term. These 12 police officers were here to assist our local officers during one of the heavy rain events a couple of months ago. The police officer who reached out to me said they would have nowhere else to stay and would be sleeping on the floor at the station. Instead, each stayed in a bed for 3 days, and the owner did not charge them anything.
Short-term rentals offer numerous benefits to locals, visitors, and to the city of Santa Barbara, including affordability, size, authenticity, local support, flexibility, convenience, and community connection. Whether traveling to Santa Barbara for a weekend getaway or an extended stay, Airbnb rentals provide a unique and personalized way to experience all the city has to offer. I hope the city can not just eliminate and "crackdown" on short-term rentals in the city, but instead, adopt a common sense, smart city ordinance to make these rentals an option in the city of Santa Barbara.
