Welcome Summer with Lounge-Worthy Outdoor Space

If you’ve lived in the Santa Barbara area for a while, you know that the month of June doesn’t exactly feel like summer. If you’re dreaming of backyard barbeques and warm, breezy nights that don’t require a puffy jacket, you’re not alone. Even though schools are out and the concert season at the Bowl is in full swing, the overcast days of June leave most of us longing for the warmer months ahead.

With summer just around the corner, now is a great time to get your yard or patio spiffed up. Whether you have a large yard to play with or simply a small balcony,

here are some of my favorite tips to create a loungeworthy outdoor space.

Make a plan. Before you start ordering patio furniture or digging holes for new plants, think about exactly how you intend to use your outdoor area. Is it chiefly for entertaining? If so, a dining area with some shade is ideal, so think about where the sun shines during the dinner hours. Sunbathing? Then you’ll need to determine the sunniest spot for lounge furniture. Watching a family movie? In this instance, you’ll need to figure out seating options and consider your electrical needs.

Bring the inside out. One trick to creating a perfect outdoor space is to blur the lines on what is indoor and what is outdoor. Making your outdoor space as comfortable and inviting as your living room doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. Adding outdoor rugs, throw blankets, potted plants, and overhead lighting are great ways to bring cozy elements outside. If your porch is covered, consider using living room furnishings, such as a wool rug and rocker, outside.

Choose the best furniture for your budget. Outdoor furniture ranges from budgetfriendly to pricey, so there’s something available at every price point. If you love the look of RH furnishings but don’t have a few extra thousand dollars on hand, never fear. Most items from luxury brands get copied within a year or so of when they hit the catalog, so do a search for “RH dupes” and you’ll likely find some affordable options. Pay attention to reviews and the materials used to make sure your purchases will last more than one season. Resin wicker is low-maintenance and will generally stand up to the elements. Teak furniture is beautiful, but the wood requires maintenance over time. If you’re not going to put

in the effort to maintain it, then there’s no point in investing in it. There’s also a nice variety of outdoor furniture made from recycled plastic available these days, and many of those pieces hold up well over time.

Create an outdoor cinema space. This sounds more complicated and expensive than it has to be. Got an old white sheet and some folding chairs? You’re halfway there. You just need a way to hang the sheet, purchase an outdoor projector, and voilà … outdoor cinema created! For extra ambience, throw down an old rug or blanket, hang some fairy lights above, add some poufs or beanbag chairs, and let the show begin.

Layer with lighting and textiles. focus is on lounging or dining, lighting and textiles can transform the space from ordinary to cozy and inviting. LED lanterns hung from a pergola or placed on the ground add ambiance while poufs and outdoor pillows add interest and make a space feel complete. Market lights can be left out yearround and make it easy to enjoy evenings outside. Solar lights are a great option as well, especially since you don’t have to worry about wires or plugs.

Don’t forget the tiki bar. Okay, maybe a tiki bar isn’t your style, but it’s important to add your personality for a truly complete space. Whether that’s an outdoor speaker to play your favorite Pandora station or a s’mores station set up around the firepit, creating your definition of ideal outdoor space is all about what makes you get outside, even on those gloomy June days.

IN THE END, IT'S ALL ABOUT FAMILY, FRIENDS & MEMORIES

With the race to always be better, to push and grind, to constantly make changes. JUST FOCUS ON BUSINESS; you will be where you want to be. Add in some social pressures, social media where “everyone is doing so well and is successful,” and then throw in aging, pandemics, and the unknown.

I am offering a newly reminded perspective and an exercise that is very valuable for those of any age.

This weekend I attended a family funeral for our favorite uncle in Virginia. I am 47 and went with my brother, who is 44, and my parents, both now in their upper 70’s. This phase of our lives for my brother and I is right in the middle of it all with work, kids, businesses, aging parents, etc. And my parents, both with successful careers behind them, now have friends and loved ones pass on and attend funerals more frequently.

At the funeral of our uncle, who was in his upper 80s, we were reminded of what people remember you by at the end. Uncle Wendell started and owned a multi-million dollar business, was super successful, and has now passed that business along to his son Mark. The whole company was there to support, and family and friends from across the country and even other countries attended. It was a fantastic celebration of life.

A couple of things stood out for me about the event, as my family and I discussed for the remainder of the trip.

First was that those things talked about at the funeral were of course, quickly recognizing the successes, but more so the people that Wendell and the business had helped over the 50+ years the company has been in business. It was the stories of how Wendell and his wife went to dinner almost every night as they did not like to cook. And how they picked a family out at each restaurant, maybe one that looked like they were celebrating something, or one that looked tired and overwhelmed, or just ones that they connected with. They would ask the waiter for their bill and pay it, asking them not to let them know who did this. Amazing as this is already to spread kindness, my favorite part was how sometimes they had friends with them, and now they also do this from time to time.

I am looking to do this again myself. It's not about the recognition, but rather about the thought. In this day and age of posting every accolade on a social media platform, this was a more old school way of acting truly out of the kindness of the heart.

The second was that everyone spoke about how Wendell would always make them laugh, how he always had a story. How he always made people feel special and gave them the time to be heard. In this day of a million distractions, and short attention spans, it was a great reminder to slow down, spend time with people, talk, make eye contact, and don’t rush. Of course, Wendell had a knack for being memorable; some people have that in spades, and this was Wendell.

But we can always be more intentional and really try to see people, and go beyond the surface level that is so easy to stay at in day-to-day encounters.

Lastly was that life is all about memories created, the things you do and experience, and those around you. No one talked about wow, he made this much money, he had this many followers, or anything material. But instead, the trips, the adventures, the stories, the things that brought Wendell and those around him joy.

I enjoyed this exercise they did at the funeral, and you can do this right now. Take a moment and close your eyes (Of course, after you finish reading, haha). Think of yourself at 95 years old. Family and friends surround you and are on your last few breaths. What are the conversations you are talking about with your family, and what guidance would you give the younger generations?

I always love being reminded of some basics and clarity on what matters most. I will leave you with a quote from Wendell.

South Coast Business & Technology Awards Event Benefits Scholarship Foundation

On June 7, about 500 people gathered at the Hilton S.B. Beachfront Resort for the annual South Coast Business & Technology Awards, which honored local entities and individuals and raised funds for the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara. The event grossed a record $310,000.

Guests enjoyed a networking reception in the Rotunda followed by dinner and the program in the Grand Ballroom, where they were welcomed by Event Co-Chairs Kirsten McLaughlin (Cox Communications market vice president) and Janet Garufis (Montecito Bank & Trust chair and CEO).

Scholarship Foundation Board Chair Matt Rowe expressed gratitude for everyone’s support, but noted that there is more to do. Even though the Foundation has become the nation’s largest community-based provider of scholarships, Rowe noted, deserving applicants are still turned away due to insufficient funds. Last year, 1,300 deserving students did not get funding.

Scholarship recipient Diego Curiel shared how he overcame alcohol and drug addiction as a teenager in the S.B. Rescue Mission’s Men’s Recovery Program and is now studying computer engineering at Cal Poly. His compelling story, eloquence, and gratitude to the Scholarship Foundation led to a standing ovation.

The Entrepreneur of the Year Award went to Guillaume de Zwirek, founder and CEO of Artera (formerly WELL Health), a leader in digital patient communications. Its platform is used by more than 500 health systems, including Sansum Clinic. Zwirek has a BA in classical guitar from the University of Southern CA and is a six-time Ironman athlete.

The Company of the Year Award went to Yardi, which provides property management software and services. A privately held company founded in 1982 by Anant Yardi, it has grown to employ more than 8,500 people in 45 offices worldwide.

Yardi is highly regarded not only for its products, but also for its quality of life for employees and its philanthropy. In accepting the award, VP Kevin Yardi noted the company’s

guiding principles of taking care of its clients, its employees, and its communities.

Yardi demonstrated its focus on employees and the community that evening by bringing about 70 employees to the event. Yardi supports hundreds of nonprofits, including more than 50 in the Santa Barbara area.

The Executive of the Year Award went to Elizabeth Cholawsky, CEO of HG Insights. She previously led Support.com and held executive positions at Citrix Systems, Move.com, and Valueclick.

Foodbank of S.B. County received the Excellence in Service Award. In accepting the award, CEO Erik Talkin emphasized that Foodbank not only distributes food to one in four people in the county, but also runs food literacy programs at the pre-school through high school level, seeking to empower youth with skills for their nutritional health.

The Pioneer Award recipient was John Greathouse, a venture capitalist, entrepreneur, writer, and UCSB Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies. As a venture capitalist, he has deployed roughly $100 million on behalf of 60 ventures. He currently serves as executive chair at CLIQ Products, BuyerCaddy, and Cadense.

Parker Clay received a Rising Star Award. For the manufacture of its luxury line of leather bags, it employs at-risk women in Ethiopia, pays living wages and benefits, provides training opportunities, and uses sustainable sources.

Sun & Swell was another Rising Star Award recipient. A certified B Corp, it makes organic, plant-based foods in compostable packaging. CrossnoKaye also received a Rising Star Award.

Award recipients were chosen by the 31-member South Coast Business & Technology Awards Committee, cochaired by McLaughlin and Garufis.

The Scholarship Foundation of S.B. has awarded more than $150 million since its founding in 1962. This year, it awarded nearly $7.2 million to 1,864 students. The Scholarship Foundation also provides free financial aid advising services, which generate significant additional funds for students.
