ADDRESS: 218 East Padre St.
A Colonial Home with Colorful Connections
The large Colonial Revival home at 218 East Padre Street was built in 1904 for $4,500 an aboveaverage price for that time. It was built for a woman not a common occurrence a century ago. Her name was Mabel Houston Lazear. She was a widow in her mid-twenties with two small children. Taking charge of the construction of her own home was not the only unusual event in her life.
The Cuba Connection
In 1898, the United States had fought the Spanish-American War in Cuba and in the Pacific.
During the war, more U.S. soldiers in Cuba had died of tropical diseases such as yellow fever and malaria than from battle wounds.
Mabel’s husband, Dr. Jesse William Lazear, had graduated from Columbia University in 1892 and started practicing at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1895. In 1900, he volunteered to go to Cuba to help investigate how yellow fever was transmitted. Mabel bravely joined her husband with their one-year-old son. She was in Cuba for several months until she became pregnant with their second child.
This was not a safe time for the family to be in Cuba. Not only because of the danger of tropical diseases, but also because of political turmoil. Cuba was transitioning from being a Spanish colony to becoming independent and wanted the American military to leave. But the U.S. armed forces stayed on the island even though the war had ended two years earlier.
But Dr. Lazear was determined to investigate yellow fever. At the time, most experts blamed the spread of the disease on bacteria. But a few experts guessed correctly:
that the disease was spread by mosquito bites.
The eventual discovery that mosquitos transmitted yellow fever and malaria was too late to save the soldiers in Cuba, but the discovery paved the way for the successful construction of the Panama Canal. The French had tried to build a canal through Panama in the 1880s but gave up because of the high mortality rate of their workers. The U.S. began construction of the canal in 1904 and worked on eliminating areas such as uncovered cisterns where mosquitos breed. The canal was finished in 1915, and Californians celebrated with enormous expositions in San Diego and San Francisco.
Unfortunately, Dr. Lazear died of yellow fever in 1900 after being bitten by a mosquito during his research. He was called a martyr and a hero. He received a number of posthumous awards and honors, including a stainedglass window at the altar of the War Memorial Chapel at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
The doctor was 34, and he died shortly after their
daughter was born. His death left Mabel a widow at age 25 with two young children. She and the children settled in Santa Barbara probably because there were several other Lazear families here. Mabel and the children lived in the home until the children were grown.
The Rose Garden Connection
Other residents of the home included prominent attorney Adolphus Claus Postel and his wife, Norma, who lived in this home in the 1930s and ’40s. Rose lovers of Santa Barbara may know that there is a boulder with a plaque in the rose garden in front of the Santa Barbara Mission that honors the Postel family. Norma Postel supported and maintained the garden.
When I visited the home, I was happy to see an old hitching post still on the parkway that I had written about in my recent survey. One thing that is no longer here, thankfully, is the prize-winning kitchen. In 1963, the home was owned by Rev. Stocking of the First Congregational Church and his wife, Elizabeth. They won an award from Better Homes and Gardens magazine for their newly updated kitchen, which featured appliances in the latest color turquoise! (I am happy to report that these appliances are no longer here.)
Please do not disturb the residents of 218 East Padre Street.

From the Seller:
“In a word: AMAZING! My wife and I approached Mike and Kyle to sell our Santa Barbara home. From the beginning, these two were pleasant and professional. They laid out the plan with great details and put all of our worries to rest.
They took the initiative to tour our home to see how we could best market it. Once the preparation was complete, they scheduled all of their team to get together on one day which was less intrusive on us. Before listing the home, they had a photographer and videographer do a beautiful job of capturing the best aspects of our house. The marketing for our house was top shelf.
Once they listed the home they held three different open house events. They kept us abreast of all potential buyer activities.
We quickly sold our house for $5,000 over the asking price which points out two things:
San Ysidro at $3,250,000
1 ) They new the correct price to put on the MLS
privacy on this fabulous Montecito estate. Resting at the property is a charming Craftsman style home circa 1912. Today, it modern amenities, and still charm. Located in MUS.

Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Hosts Lovely Food & Wine Festival
On June 24, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History held its annual S.B. Food & Wine Festival, an event beloved by winemakers, chefs, and patrons. The sold-out crowd of 1,100 enjoyed wine from about 80 wineries and food from about 20 purveyors, all of whom donated their offerings. The event raised $250,000 for the museum’s nature and science education programs.
Santa Barbara pioneer winemakers and other esteemed winemakers and owners come back each year to personally pour their wines and chat with guests. Chefs from premier restaurants and catering companies serve their culinary creations and engage with patrons. All this happens on the idyllic, spacious, oak-shaded museum grounds.
Wine country pioneer Fred Brander, who has participated from the start in 1983, related how this is one of his favorite events. The event started when the S.B. wine industry was in its infancy, Brander remarked, and drew other pioneers as well, including Richard Sanford, Jim Clendenen, and Rick Longoria. Other festivals have come and gone, he noted, but this one remains, surviving the ups and downs of the times. The festival has been at the Museum of Natural History since 2006.
Fellow pioneer Doug Margerum was happy to be back once again pouring his wines. In earlier years, Margerum, along with partners Jim Clendenen and Bob Lindquist, poured their Vita Nova wines, and since 2001, he has poured his own Margerum Wine Company wines. For other events, Margerum related, he sends staff, but with the beautiful environment and colleagues participating, he almost always does this one himself.
For culinary offerings, a popular newcomer on the scene was Get Shucked Oyster Bar Catering, offering Long Island Blue Point oysters on the half
shell and oyster shooters with their secret ingredient of “a little bit of love.” Other highlights included L.A.-based Rondeno Culinary Designs’ crawfish jambalaya egg rolls with kimchi sauce, La Paloma Café’s Pterodactyl Egg with local smoked fish, a seeded shell, and anchovy aioli, and Finch & Fork’s California olive oil cake with fresh peaches, bourbon caramel glaze, and Chantilly cream.
In an interview, President and CEO Luke Swetland related how proceeds benefit the youth education programs, where the Museum of Natural History seeks to really have an impact. It does this by providing that “aha” moment or the “that’s so cool” moment. “When you touch someone’s heart,” Swetland posits, “their head inevitably follows maybe not tomorrow; maybe it is 10 years from now,” but it happens. He has heard over and over again from adults that their visits to the museum as a youth were foundational experiences. The museum opens up an awareness of the natural world and causes an appreciation for this world to develop.
While still shy of its pre-COVID numbers, the museum has been increasing its school visits and expects to serve about 25,000 kids from the tricounty region and L.A. next academic year. This includes visits to the Sea Center, which is part of the museum, and had visits suspended because of some repair work but will resume school visits in the fall. Groups from Title One schools, which make up about 45 percent of all visits, pay only $50 per visit. The museum also offers summer camps and this year will provide full scholarships for 20 kids.
The museum, renovated in 2018, has more than 3.5 million specimens of natural history, covering mammals, birds, marine life, geology, astronomy, paleontology, anthropology, and more. For more info, go to sbnature.org

Is Rapid and Complete Degradation of Plastics Possible?
Plastics are ubiquitous and do not decompose. Every piece of plastic produced since 1907 still exists. A combination of physical, biological, and sunlight exposures can degrade plastic debris, but at most to a micro or nano scale. In essence, plastics pollute land, water, and air, posing environmental and health issues for all living creatures.
Scientists are beginning to realize that this longevity dilemma might be solvable, since many species build strong, longlasting materials that still break down into simpler compounds that can be reused by other organisms in a healthy, regenerative cycle. Plastics are made of repeating units called monomers, which can be bonded together in long, sturdy chains called polymers.
Natural organisms also produce complex polymer chains, but they can be broken down when enzymes fit into the bonds between monomers. These enzymes, found in the natural world, catalyze chemical reactions that unlock the bonds and break the chains into their
component parts. With plastics, microbes and enzymes are only able to attack the surface, leaving the bonds mostly intact and out of reach of enzymes.
Thinking to help facilitate the degradation of plastics, scientists tried embodying enzymes directly in the production process. The high heat and great pressure of manufacturing, however, damaged the sensitive enzymes before they could work their magic.
At one company, called Intropic Materials, researchers surmounted this barrier by basically taking another process from the natural world and combining it with plastics. Specifically, they utilized specialized types of molecules that exist inside many organisms called “chaperone proteins” that assist enzymes to “switch on” or move to where they need to be to work effectively.
Before embedding these proteins in the production process, they found that first they needed to wrap them in a biodegradable cover to protect them when plastic is melted and extruded. Thus undamaged, the enzymes can do their job when
the plastic’s useful life has ended. When exposed to composting conditions, i.e., moderate heat and moisture, the enzymes eat the plastic from the inside out within hours or days not simply breaking it down into microplastics, but disintegrating it back into simpler, reusable molecules as soil or even new plastics.
Efforts to recycle plastics have only been marginally successful. Our attempts to wean ourselves off plastics have been
even less successful. But now, by bringing together natural and synthetic materials and processes, Intropic Materials is opening the door to a more innovative and sustainable future.

T his c. 1900 home at 324 North Soledad Street was the only house on the block until 1917. Built on a small hill between Montecito and Gutierrez streets, on what was then the outskirts of the city, this Queen Anne–style home probablyoverlookedthecitywhentherewerefewerhomes and trees in the area. Soledad (pronounced so-LAYdad) means “solitary” inTheSpanish.home is painted his- torically appropriate earth- tone colors that owners Chris Emanuel and Paul Lommen had carefully researched. The colors accentuate the home’s original details. The steep slope of its roofline marks it as an older home among the shallower slopes of the newer homes that surround it. The home’s crowning glory is the cheerful sun- burst motif that accents the front gable. This was a popular decoration for homes of this vintage.I’venoticeditonotherhomes here.Keepaneyeoutforitasyouwalk around. Built by a Pioneer Family The family of James Augustus Blood built the home. HistoryfromNearandFar It pays to network when you are curious about the history of your house. Chris learned from a neighbor that her home’s property had been much larger in the pastandthatthefamilyhadseveralfarmanimals. This wascorroboratedbya1909adthatIfoundinthelocal paperfora“milch”(milk)cowforsaleatthe324North Soledad home. A few months after the current owners moved into the home in 1990, a woman knocked on the door and explained that her grandfather had built the home. Along with some information about the home’s past, she had a 1920s photo of the Blood family posed on the porch. A porch post can be seen next to the family members the same post that is there today. Also original to the home is the large pair of pocket doors separatingthefrontparlorfromthefamilyroom. Chris Emanuel remembers falling in love with the house 30 years ago. “When I saw it, I knew this was the one. The house has a very welcoming feel to it.
