An Artist’s Home with Exotic Details
Ilove to write about artists’ homes. They are never ordinary. This home is no exception. It was built by landscape artist Lockwood de Forest, with help from his son-in-law, architect Winsor Soule. There are numerous examples of de Forest’s paintings in Santa Barbara at the Sullivan Goss Gallery, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, and they will also be in the future Chrisman California Islands Center in Carpinteria.
De Forest traveled the world as a young man and became especially fascinated by Indian architecture and design. His former home in Manhattan is decorated with elaborate teak carvings from India. When he settled in Santa Barbara, he con-
structed a home with simple lines on which to display the elaborately carved elements, considered East Indian Craft Revival style.
FAMILY STORIES
I am fortunate that I had written about this house in my book Way Back When: Santa Barbara in 1915. At the time, I interviewed de Forest’s grandson Kellam de Forest, who passed away in 2021. Here’s some of what I wrote with Kellam’s help:
Lockwood de Forest, one of the country’s premier landscape painters, decided to build a home in Santa Barbara at 1815 Laguna Street in January of 1915. (Not to be confused with his son, the landscape architect with the same name.) Lockwood Senior (1850-1932) made a name for himself early in his career as a partner of Louis Comfort Tiffany designing interiors for the rich and famous in the Gilded Age. He established a factory in India that provided teak carving and pierced brass from India to embellish his and Tiffany’s commissions. The carved details from India that add an unusual touch to the interior and exterior of the home came from de Forest’s decorating business.
As the popularity of ornately decorated homes declined, de Forest returned to devoting his talents to landscape painting. In 1900, he discovered Santa Barbara and from then on spent winters there. By 1912, he had purchased a quarter of a block on the corner of Laguna and Islay and designed a house complete with a basement studio and a cupola on the roof.
DE FOREST BUILDS HIS DREAM HOME
When de Forest bought the property, the local paper wrote, “Mr. Lockwood de Forest, while a man of wealth, has devoted his life to art and architecture, studying both in New York and abroad.... Later he followed his profession in Egypt, Syria and Greece. He founded the workshops at Ahmedabad, India, for the revival of wood carving.” (Santa Barbara Morning Press, October 16, 1913)
In January 1915, the building permit for this home showed an estimated cost of $11,000. Other homes on the same page in the old permits book ranged from $400 to $4,500. The home’s original address was 335 East Islay.
The local paper added, “The owner will use a large amount of East Indian teakwood carving in ornamentation, for both interior and exterior, thus putting to good use some of the vast collections of artistic specimens that he has gathered in past years, from distant parts of the world … this building … promises to be one of the really artistic residences in this community.” (Santa Barbara Morning Press, February 9, 1915)
The home was divided into apartments sometime in the 1950s. The exterior wood carvings were painted green, probably in that same era when seafoam green was popular. About 2011, the house was restored to a single-family residence.
I was happy to see a hitching post in front of the home. It’s one half of a set of posts that formerly supported a bar to hold horse reins. There was only one post present when the 1975 survey was done, so it has been incomplete for almost half a century.
Homeowners Martine Mickiewicz and Greg Hesterberg bought the home in 2016 and are proud of their home’s unique artistic heritage. They also like the ability to walk to the center of the city.

Newcomers Club Hosts Party for Newbies
On July 30, the Santa Barbara Newcomers Club held a fun Fiesta Party at the stunning Riviera home of Todd Yancey and Dave Denniston. More than 100 members turned out for this event, which was geared to the newest members of this 1,000-plus-member social nonprofit organization. Drinks, Mexican food, and good cheer flowed from the multiple layers of decks on the ocean view estate of Casa Allegria.
The venue was especially appropriate, as it was the residence of former Newcomers Bob and Pat Fulmer. Bob wittingly detailed his experiences as a newcomer in this town in the book Newcomers in Paradise (2010), with a chapter on the Club titled “600 New Best Friends.”
When asked about the Club, everyone spoke passionately about their experiences. Denniston shared that he and Yancey have never been so socially busy in their lives. This comes, for him, after 30 years in New York City and 20 years in San Francisco. They joined the Newcomers Club to meet people but could have never imagined, according to Yancey, anything like this. “We have met so many beautiful people,” he related, and “it’s truly shocking how many wonderful friends we have in such a short period of time.”
Many people shared that with the 40 committees and 50-60 events to choose from each month, members can easily find activities that suit them and like-minded people with whom to enjoy them.
In the past several years, the Young Professionals group, comprising members mainly in their twenties and thirties, has grown to more than 100 members and now offers a multitude of events geared more toward their interests and schedules. The majority of Club members are still retirees.
Immediate past president DaAnne Smith related that the Club enables members, through its multitude of offerings, to really get to know the community, in some cases better than people who have lived here their whole lives. The Club
arranges activities such as a backstage tour of the Santa Barbara Bowl and a tour of the Old Mission’s bell tower that are not offered to the general public.
Len Rosenthal, a recent past president who moved here from the Bay Area during COVID, equated Newcomers to the first year in college, where everyone is in the same boat, trying to meet others, so everyone has an open mind. With Newcomers’ members being older, he noted, there’s a level of maturity. This means no competition everyone just wants to meet others and have fun.
Debbie Rehr, who moved here a year ago from Connecticut, related how the organization has a diverse membership, with people from all over the world and all age groups. Her husband, Larry Rehr, shared how two mornings each week, they do a Newcomers beach walk; on Fridays, they do a Newcomers hike in the morning and a happy hour later in the day; and they sign up for additional events, depending on the offerings of the week.
The all-volunteer nonprofit has an entire leadership team that changes every six months. When asked about the volunteer nature and the frequent leadership change, Smith related that it all works amazingly well. Members take their positions very seriously, she noted, because they see how beneficial the Club is to the membership and so they are committed to its success. The short-term limits, Smith believes, are a positive attribute, as they make the positions attractive to members and enable the club to keep reinventing itself, taking advantage of the strengths of those involved.
Anyone can join the Club within their first 18 months of residing in the South County and can stay for two years, or qualify for a third year by serving on a committee or in a leadership position. A handful of recurring events are open to the public, including happy hours, walks, and hikes, which allows prospective members to check out the Club before joining.

The Imperative for Degrowth
Growth is the structural imperative of capitalism. Unlimited growth has caused our ecological crisis. Unending growth is unsustainable on a finite planet. We are experiencing the initial impacts of climate change, but these impacts are only a part of the ecological breakdown we face. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has spelled out nine planetary boundaries: The most recognized among them, aside from climate change,
are biodiversity loss, ocean acidification, ozone depletion, freshwater abuses, and land-system change. Economic growth has been sold across the world as necessary to improve people’s lives. The data indicate the opposite, however.
Many countries with lower GDPs than the U.S. have higher life expectancy, better health care, superior educational systems, and more affordable housing. Take Costa Rica with a tenth of the GDP per capita of the U.S. as an example. Life expectancy

Published in 2020, Jason Hickel’s book Less Is More lays outs a comprehensive path to restructuring capitalist economies to move away from unfettered growth and consumption. One strategy he propounds is to end planned obsolescence by requiring extended warranties on products (2-5 times their current average lifespan) and by establishing the “right to repair,” making it illegal to produce things that can’t be easily repaired.
Another necessity is to curtail advertising. It feeds the growth imperative by manipulating people to want and buy things that they don’t need. It assaults our minds, becoming more insidious every year. Remedies are to create quotas for reducing total ad expenditures, liberating public spaces from ads both offline and online where people don’t have a choice as to what they see, and banning the collection of people’s private information to target ads.
In the garment industry, advertising joins with planned obsolescence to cause disastrous impacts on the environment. It also feeds social inequality. These two strategies lead us to purchase quickly; wear, often only once; discard; and repeat. Doubling between 2000 and 2015, the industry produces about 150 billion pieces of clothing annually. The world pays for this in modern slavery; toxic, plastic-filled waterways; and burning landfills. Fashion produces more emissions than France, Germany, and the United Kingdom combined. The industry employs millions, or maybe one should say exploits millions, mostly among the most vulnerable and mostly women and pays them some of the lowest wages.
Hickel shifts the conversation from growth, except in a few of the poorest countries, to reducing unnecessary or ecological destructive production (fossil fuels, private jets, arms, and SUVs) to what we really want and need: clean energy, public healthcare, top-notch education, affordable housing, and regenerative agriculture.
