An Eye for Design
When he was about 7 or 8, Erin Feinblatt got his first camera, a gift from his grandmother. The Kodak Instamatic 100 a mostly plastic, easy-load pointand-shoot was the perfect starter camera, and Feinblatt took to it right away. Soon enough, he remembers, he commandeered his dad’s “real cameras,” a Canon AE-1 and a Pentax Spotmatic.
“Several members of my extended family were avid photographers,” Feinblatt said. “I have fond memories of the slideshows following our family vacations growing up.
Feinblatt grew up in the San Fernando Valley and got a history degree plus a double minor in Spanish and business at the University of San Diego before working in habitat restoration at Torrey Pines State Reserve. That experience helped him land a job monitoring threatened and endangered seabirds and shorebirds throughout California and Oregon for several years.
He then arrived at a crossroads that would lead him back to photography. Feinblatt answers some questions about that route:
What happened at that point? I couldn’t further my career without a higher degree. I went to work for Oregon State University to see if I wanted to get a master’s or PhD, but after a season of fieldwork, I decided that it was not the path for me. My wife, Brina, encouraged me to explore photography as a career, and I started taking photography courses at our local community college.
Sounds like a full schedule. During the following two years, I did biology work during the day, waited tables at night, and started second-shooting for another
photographer on weekends. After transitioning to digital photography, I came to Santa Barbara in 2008 to attend Brooks Institute of Photography.
What was your emphasis at Brooks, and when did you graduate? I graduated in 2011 with a focus in commercial photography. During my tenure, I took a few architectural photography courses, and it was during my time at Brooks that I began shooting for a few local architects.
What inspired you early on, and who helped along the way? Growing up, I was inspired by editorial photography in magazines such as National Geographic, Surfer, and Sunset. And I am grateful to the handful of photographers that inspired and mentored me, such as John Durant, and at Brooks there was Ralph Clevenger, Dean DePhillipo, Chris Orwig, and Chris Broughton. And many others.
What’s your niche commercially? Most of my commercial work focuses on architectural and interior design and outdoor lifestyle photography.
What is it about shooting architecture and interior design that appeals to you on a creative level? Thanks to having been a wildlife biologist, I’m a keen observer, and my creativity comes out through my compositional choices. I thrive on exploring perspectives, and I am very intentional about camera positioning, lens choice, and time of day.
And outside of that, what other kinds of photography do you find interesting? I still aim to use photography as a means to inspire conservation, and I love nothing more than to photograph ocean-scapes from a boat or in and under the water.

Selling a home is a big task that frequently marks a turning point or change in someone's life. To guarantee a smoother transaction, many elements must be carefully considered. Three factors are particularly important in determining the outcome among these factors: the agent choice, the applied marketing approach, and the pricing strategy. Understanding how each of these levers uniquely affects success is crucial, even in the Santa Barbara area, where we are fortunate to have outstanding real estate agents and a constant need for listing inventory.
The First Lever: The Agent You Choose
The choice of the ideal real estate agent is one of the most critical decisions made when listing a house. Throughout the entire selling process, the agent wears many hats, affecting the result and the experience for the people involved. A qualified and professional realtor may offer insights into the neighborhood real estate market, assist in navigating tricky legal and administrative situations, and provide helpful suggestions on how to stage and get the house ready for prospective purchasers. An agent can help with everything from the tiniest queries about where to start to the most significant negotiation decisions.

T his c. 1900 home at 324 North Soledad Street was the only house on the block until 1917. Built on a small hill between Montecito and Gutierrez streets, on what was then the outskirts of the city, this Queen Anne–style home probablyoverlookedthecitywhentherewerefewerhomes and trees in the area. Soledad (pronounced so-LAYdad) means “solitary” inTheSpanish.home is painted his- torically appropriate earth- tone colors that owners Chris Emanuel and Paul Lommen had carefully researched. The colors accentuate the home’s original details. The steep slope of its roofline marks it as an older home among the shallower slopes of the newer homes that surround it. The home’s crowning glory is the cheerful sun- burst motif that accents the front gable. This was a popular decoration for homes of this vintage.I’venoticeditonotherhomes here.Keepaneyeoutforitasyouwalk around. Built by a Pioneer Family The family of James Augustus Blood built the home. Blood and his wife, Mary Josephine Hall Blood, had trav- eled from Illinois by covered wagon in 1870 and settled in Santa Barbara. The Bloodfamilycameherebecausearela- tive, also named James A. Blood, had settledonafarminCarpinteriain1867. (Myresearchwasmadeespeciallychallengingbecause bothmensharedthesamenameanddiedwithinayear ofeachother.TheJamesA.Bloodwhobuiltthishome wasreferredtoasJamesA.Blood Junior to distinguish him from theCarpinteriafarmer,although the farmer was his uncle, not his father.) The Bloods raised six children in Santa Barbara several of whom spent their adult lives in this home. The most prominent was Alice Mabel Blood, who was anaccomplishedpainterandhad been Saint Barbara and the Festi val Queen in the Flower Festival parades of the 1890s. James A. Blood was in the real estate business and was co-owner with Francis H. Knight of the House-FurnishingEmporiumonStateStreetnearOrtega.Thestore sold everythingfurniturefrom baby carriages to coffins.Thecompanyoncecausedacon troversy,accordingtoWalkerA.Tomp- kins. In his newspaper column in 1971, he wrote that in the 1880s, the firm of BloodandKnightputahugesignonthe side of a building facing Stearns Wharf that read: “BLOOD AND KNIGHT, UNDERTAKERS. COFFINS AT LOW PRICES.”“SincemanyofSantaBarbara’s winter visitors in the 1880s were in their terminal illnesses, the advertising of Blood and Knight not too euphoni- ous a name in itself was enough to chill the marrow. So vociferous were the civic protests, that the controversial sign was finally removed.” HistoryfromNearandFar It pays to network when you are curious about the history of your house. Chris learned from a neighbor that her home’s property had been much larger in the pastandthatthefamilyhadseveralfarmanimals.This wascorroboratedbya1909adthatIfoundinthelocal paperfora“milch”(milk)cowforsaleatthe324North Soledad home. A few months after the current owners moved into the home in 1990, a woman knocked on the door and explained that her grandfather had built the home. Along with some information about the home’s past, she had a 1920s photo of the Blood family posed on the porch. A porch post can be seen next to the family members the same post that is there today. Also original to the home is the large pair of pocket doors separatingthefrontparlorfromthefamilyroom. Chris Emanuel remembers falling in love with the house 30 years ago. “When I saw it, I knew this was the one. The house has a very welcoming feel to it. It hasbeenverynicelyredoneandstillretainsalotofthe original character. There is a lot of very lovely woodwork throughout the house and a great old Mexican peppertreeintheback.” Please do not disturb the residents of 324 North Soledad Street.
