ArchitecTours Design Showcase
Just around the corner from Santa Barbara High School and the Bowl sits Johnson Court, a housing complex with both history and heart. Johnson Court is one of eight projects being showcased on October 7 as part of the 14th annual ArchitecTours, a selfguided tour and celebration of design and architecture, presented by the American Institute of Architects, Santa Barbara.
I had the pleasure of visiting Johnson Court last week with architect Detty Peikert of RRM Design Group. The 16-unit complex was built in 2020 as a collaboration between RRM and the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara.
Located at 813 East Carrillo Street, the property was generously offered to the Housing Authority in 2013 at low cost by the family of Vernon and Ann Johnson, with
the vision to create housing for homeless veterans to help honor Vernon Johnson’s military service.
Johnson Court is a long, lean two- and three-story building made up of 16 studio units. A central courtyard filled with picnic tables is an obvious gathering place, and I’m told that a Ping-Pong table and barbecue are often in use as well. A shared common room includes office space for a counselor from New Beginnings, who is on-site Monday through Friday to provide services for the 16 residents. A manager’s unit at the front of the property is staffed full-time as well. Johnson Court is a parking-restricted property, so residents cannot own cars. Bike storage is provided, and bus stops are nearby.
Original iterations of the site map show changes made throughout the design and approval process. “There’s obviously a great need for this type of housing,” said Peikert.
“What we were able to accomplish on the size of this property is a success, and it works nicely in the neighborhood.” The individual studios provide private space for each resident, while the central courtyard design encourages community and interaction.
In addition to Johnson Court, the tour includes four private residences, a senior housing project, and two commercial projects: Drift Hotel and S.B. Biergarten. ArchitecTours offers a behind-the-scenes look, background information, and the opportunity to meet and mingle with architects and other design professionals. The properties on this year’s tour were chosen in part because they characterize Santa Barbara’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

Land Trust Hosts Picnic at the Preserve
On September 10, the Land Trust of Santa Barbara County hosted its first fundraiser, a picnic at its beautiful Arroyo Hondo Preserve on the Gaviota Coast. This nonprofit has protected about 32,000 acres of land in the county by acquiring land and conservation easements.
The event began with a midday reception featuring handson experience stations, including a peregrine falcon and a redtailed hawk from SweetHawk Falconry and a demonstration beehive and honey tasting from Santa Barbara Hives. After the program, docents led tours of the magnificent canyon.
For lunch, the 200 guests were seated comfortably under an enormous open-air tent, and after the meal and auction led by Geoff Green, guests learned from Executive Director Meredith Hendricks that the Gaviota Overlook Campaign has not only met but exceeded its goal, raising $3.5 million and enabling the expansion of the Arroyo Hondo Preserve through the purchase of 48 acres of adjacent land.
This, according to Hendricks, is the first new piece of conservation on the Gaviota Coast in 15 years. She thanked donors and elected officials present for protecting this land forever.
Hendricks alluded also to conservation of another whopping 25,000 acres on the coast, with details coming soon.
Hendricks thanked donors for their generous contributions, which have enabled the Land Trust to leverage state and federal government funding and accelerate conservation work. She assured donors that every dollar goes to direct action for new open space, habitat for local food systems, or recreation.
In thanking donors, Board Chair Joe Weiland emphasized the permanence of the Land Trust’s work. “Everything that is being done today is being done for a permanent cause it will always be preserved.”
In an interview, Hendricks explained that the $3.5 million raised for the Gaviota Overlook will enable the Land Trust to purchase the property, develop a trail system, and create an endowment for property management.
The Arroyo Hondo Preserve is open a couple of weekends a month to the general public and also hosts groups from local schools, nonprofits, and other entities. A funder-imposed deed restriction dictates that habitat management be prioritized, which limits public access, but the Land Trust seeks to maxi-
mize public access to the extent allowed.
In an interview, Weiland shared that the Gaviota Overlook purchase is great, but this success creates its own problem raising more funds to look after the new property along with all the existing ones, which will soon total 56,000 acres. This amount of acreage requires lots of staff time to monitor easements, ensuring that partners are abiding by the terms of the agreements. Projects like the Gaviota Overlook are easier to attract donors for, Weiland related, than the less exciting but necessary ongoing stewardship work associated with the easements.
Weiland is pleased that these days, more landowners are reaching out to the Land Trust, wanting to work with it, because the Land Trust has earned their trust through its track record. Trust, according to Weiland, is crucial for getting landowners to grant easements because of the perpetual nature of the partnerships they create between the landowner and the Land Trust.
Weiland, who has served the Land Trust for 20 years, was drawn to the organization because, he related, it attains a very positive net result without being confrontational. Having a conversation with willing landowners, according to Weiland, works out really well.
The Land Trust presently has 20 projects in the pipeline in various parts of the county. Hendricks is especially excited about a property in Orcutt that they are in “deep diligence” mode on, hoping to create a preserve for the Santa Maria Valley similar to Arroyo Hondo, but with more park-like features.
With funding from the state Sustainable Agriculture Lands Conservation (SALC) Program, the Land Trust has a handful of projects in the works for conservation easements on farm and ranch land that is at imminent risk of sprawl development. The focus is on areas of the county where there is a lot of pressure for development, but also really good soil.
Another set of projects revolves around protecting threatened or endangered species. With the majority of the county considered a biodiversity hot spot, there is a big need here. Deals can take years, even a decade to complete, according to Hendricks, necessitating individual donor support to sustain the Land Trust’s efforts and enable it to obtain public grants.

TEACHER’S FUND LAUNCHES 2023 SUPPLIES DRIVE
The non-profit Teacher’s Fund has launched its annual Supplies Drive with the goal of raising $75,000 to purchase educational supplies for Santa Barbara-area teachers and students.
This year’s fundraising drive launched Sept. 1 and runs through Oct. 19. Anyone interested in donating to the drive can do so at TFSuppliesDrive.com. Donors can contribute to specific items requested by teachers or submit a general donation. Common teacher wish list items include STEM supplies, learning toys, art supplies, electronics, and classroom furniture.
Alternatively, individuals and organizations can sponsor the supplies drive. Sponsorship levels start at $250 and include social media mentions and entries for the chance to win one of numerous prizes and other recognitions.
All proceeds from the fundraising campaign go to help kindergarten through 12th grade teachers at Santa Barbara-area schools, from Carpinteria through to the Santa Ynez Valley. So far, each year’s drive has surpassed expectations, with the 2022 drive bringing in over $85,000.
“We are so thankful for all the generous sup-
port from the community over the years. Their contributions make a real difference for our hard-working Santa Barbara teachers and their students,” said Brianna Johnson, a realtor for Village Properties and supplies drive committee member. “We’re optimistic that this year our wonderful community will once again step up and help us reach our fundraising goal.”
The Teacher’s Fund was created in 2002 by Renee Grubb, the owner of Village Properties, as a way for teachers to request much needed supplies for their classrooms. Since then, the Teacher’s Fund has donated more than $2 million to Santa Barbara-area schools. Over the years, as schools have faced increasing budget constraints, the Teacher’s Fund has stepped up its fundraising to provide ever greater support for teachers.
