I thought this would be a good time to tell you about the ghosts I’ve encountered in my work as a house historian — here in Santa Barbara, and in my previous lives — oops! I mean my previous life — in the Chicago area.

I researched a home in La Grange, Illinois, that had several ghosts. In my research of this large 1890s Queen Anne– style home, I located a woman who had owned it in the 1960s. I asked her several questions about the house, and then she asked me a question: “Do the current owners know about the ghosts?” The woman explained that when her family bought the house, it had been used as the motherhouse for a group of Catholic nuns. The nuns told her about the ghosts. They said that when they drove along the driveway, they

could see people inside the THE GREAT HOUSE DETECTIVE house, but when they went inside, there was no one there. The woman talking to me said that her family also saw ghosts at the windows, but it apparently didn’t bother them at first. But, she said, eventually the ghosts began to wear out their welcome. So, she went up to the third floor, where she “felt” by Betsy J. Green the ghosts the most, and had a one-way “conversation” with them. She asked that they please move to the twostory carriage house at the rear of the property. She said that her family did not see them again. When I told this story to the current owner, she kind of pooh-poohed it. But! I met her about a year later, and she said, “They’re back!” She said she had not told her gradeschool children about the ghosts, but then the kids started complaining about having strange feelings in the room where they did their homework after school. It was a small room between the formal parlor and the dining room. The owner said that when the real estate agent showed her the house, and said, “This is the morning room,” the owner thought, “Oh, I guess the sun comes in here in the morning, and it’s a nice place to have breakfast.” But no, it was the “mourning room,” the room where families traditionally laid out the dead when funerals were held at home. This was the room where the kids did their homework, and the kids started saying, “Mom, when I’m in that room, I feel like someone’s watching me.” The homeowner burned some bundles of white sage to exorcise the spirits, and she said that the ghosts had moved out once again.

Second Encounter I was researching a modest farmhouse that was built in the early 1900s in Naperville, Illinois, by an older widow.

During my investigation, I found out that the widow had died in the house. I wasn’t sure if the current owner would be upset about this, or if she would want me to include this information in the house history. I visited the owner at her home to discuss this. When I told her about the woman who had died in her house, the owner sat bolt upright on the sofa with a shocked expression on her face. I did a mental head thump, and thought, “Oh, I shouldn’t have said anything about it.” But to my surprise, the owner was excited. She told me, “I have felt a presence in this house. A female presence. Not unfriendly. My cats have reacted as well. Now I know her name. Thank you!” Whew!

CEC Celebrates at Green Gala

O

n September 28, about 200 supporters of the Community Environmental Council (CEC) gathered at CEC’s recently opened Environmental Hub to raise funds for this popular nonprofit and celebrate once again the opening of this spectacular 10,000-square-foot space at 1219 State Street. The event raised more than $100,000. Guests enjoyed mingling during the reception, while plant-based noshes by Satellite S.B. were passed instead of a sit-down dinner. Many checked out the two-story space — what CEC bills as an epicenter for community activism, education, entrepreneurship, media, and art, along with office space for itself and a few other nonprofits. For the program, CEO/Executive Director Sigrid Wright welcomed guests and shared that with its focus on climate change, CEC aims to reverse, protect, and repair. Moreover, with California repeatedly setting the pace for other states and beyond, Wright noted, CEC’s work in shaping the Central Coast as a climate innovation lab has impacts far beyond this region. Boardmember Geoff Green then led a spirited auction. Nalleli Cobo, Goldman Environmental Prize winner and cofounder of People Not Pozos, gave an impassioned, eloquent, and inspiring talk about her story and the importance of climate activism. Cobo, now 22, grew up 30 feet from an active oil well that led to myriad health issues for her, including reproductive cancer. Her activism, starting at age 11, led to the closure of that AllenCo well and spurred other people to action. She joyously shared how last year, the L.A. City Council and L.A. County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to phase out all oil and gas wells and ban new oil sites. Also last year, Governor Newsom signed into law a bill requiring a 3,200-foot health and safety buffer zone between new oil extraction and sensitive land. Subsequently, the oil industry got a referendum on the 2024 ballot to overturn this, and Cobo urged guests to vote no on this. The Hub is quite impressive, reflecting the $3.5 million expense CEC incurred on improvements to the building it is leasing from the Hutton Parker Foundation at a heavily discounted rate. The funds came out of the nearly $17

million it raised in its capital campaign. The space previously was leased by Youth Interactive, which also created a community space and sublet to other nonprofits. Regarding the size and expense of the Hub, Wright related that “thinking big is vital to tackling climate change, and we are intentional in our strategy and commitment to do twice as much, twice as fast to address this existential crisis. The Environmental Hub was designed not only to bring greater awareness to this critical issue, but to provide a space and resource for organizations along the Central Coast working to solve complex social and environmental problems.” Since the Hub’s opening in early July, CEC has held a western monarch butterfly exhibit and related discussion and film, an Extreme Heat Forum, a screening and discussion on Holly Becker’s documentary Arresting Science, and a Plastic-Free July Expo. Going forward, CEC has two events planned: a meet and greet on October 16 with filmmaker Rachel Ward in conjunction with the premier of Rachel’s Farm at the Lobero Theatre and a Youth Climate Workshop on October 28. CEC is offering free use of the space to some grassroots partner organizations and offering it for a fee to others. Several nonprofits are taking advantage of this. CEC has sublet a small amount of space (400 sq ft total) to the White Buffalo Land Trust, Human Rights Watch, the Terrace Foundation, and TVSB and hopes to sublet another 2,000 square feet next year when it completes remodeling work. CEC will soon seek to rent hot desks at the Hub, with members having access to common areas. Next year, the plan is for a partnership with TVSB on a Media Lab for podcasts, webinars, live broadcasts and more. CEC seeks to advance rapid and equitable solutions to the climate crisis. Recent work includes advocating for community choice energy programs, installing 121 bottle-filling hydration stations in local schools and public spaces, launching a bilingual service to provide info on switching to electric, and training more than 100 climate stewards.

MOXI@Night Raises Funds for Outreach Programs

n September 30, MOXI, the Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation, held its annual bash at the museum, this year with an experiential Celebration of Sound + Light theme. The event raised funds for MOXI’s outreach programs, which further its mission of igniting learning through interactive experiences in science and creativity. Sponsors and their guests once again enthusiastically enjoyed this annual fundraising celebration. The event sold out at the sponsorship level, so individual tickets weren’t even offered, and the event netted more than $240,000. The evening began with a spirited reception on the second floor of the museum, with disco balls and lively music provided by Lilia Valerie on electric violin. The party then moved to the rooftop for dinner, with Brasscals band ushering the 200 guests upstairs and playing through the first course. Then the duet of Allison Allport on harp and Lara Wickes on theremin entertained guests on a raised stage with a stunning mountain backdrop. President/CEO Robin Gose welcomed guests and expressed gratitude to donors for their support in providing equitable access to play-based learning experiences. She noted the importance of these experiences to a child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development. Andrew Firestone, a founding boardmember of MOXI, led an inspiring and entertaining auction and paddle raise, which was followed by dancing to a silent disco and sitar lounge music by Ronobir Lahiri. MOXI’s programming includes school field trips, with nearly 9,000 students from L.A. County to Santa Maria visiting last year and more than half of these getting a free or reduced rate. MOXI is in its second year of after-school programming, which this year involves about 175 students in a six-session program at three elementary schools. Staff facilitates open-ended design challenges through playbased activities, and the program culminates with a visit to MOXI. To help ensure cost isn’t a barrier to visiting the museum, MOXI participates in the Museum for All Program, offering admission for $1 to any CalFresh recipient. By working with partner organizations and advertising, MOXI last year drew in 5,300 visitors under this program. Additionally, MOXI provides partner memberships to several nonprofits and free admission to local teachers. MOXI is dependent on community support, with more than a quarter of revenue coming from contributions last year.
