ADDRESS: 434 West Padre Street
A Home with a Lot of Heart
J
ust across the road from Mission Creek, at 434 West Padre Street, sits a modest-sized cottage decorated with numerous small hearts. In October 1908, William Barber and his wife, Pearl, bought this circa 1900 home from a widow for $850. Members of the Barber family still live here more than a century later. William was an English immigrant who worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. His job description was “car inspector.” So, presumably, he checked the passenger and freight-train cars to make sure they were functional and THE GREAT HOUSE DETECTIVE safe. His job probably involved climbing around on the cars. It sounds like he was a strong, athletic guy. Apparently, he was such a model of health that he was mentioned in numerous ads for back pain medication in the Santa Barbara Morning Press from 1905 to 1907. Part of the ads read: “I had attacks for three years, some of by Betsy J. Green them so severe that I was unable to stoop or straighten after stooping. I will be only too pleased to advise anyone to use Doan’s Kidney Pills whenever opportunity presents itself.” Doan’s pills have been sold since the mid-1800s and are still available today.
A Very Big Family William and Pearl raised 10 children in their home that is located at the western end of Padre Street where it meets Oak Park Lane. Many things have changed in this area since 1908. Padre Street was formerly called First Street because it was the first street north of Mission Street. Oak Park Lane used to be called Rancheria Street because it was part of that street until
A Scandal in the Past The present Barber family was unaware of this part of their home’s history until I shared it with them. They knew that William and Pearl Barber bought the home in 1908, and that a widow had been the previous owner. But back in 1904, this widow had been in headlines that read like the subtitles of a trashy romance novel: “Lured Astray by Blind Love,” “Aged Judge Victim of a Queer Infatuation,” “Known to Have Considerable Money in His Possession,” “Aged Man’s Family Still Ignorant of His Whereabouts.” “Lured by a strange fascination for a woman whose face he has never seen, fighting against her influence, only to yield at the last, Judge J.H. Tyree, a blind man, almost 70 years of age, had deserted his family, his friends, his home and everything which makes an old man’s life worth living, to go away with a woman named Dora L. Taylor” (Santa Barbara Morning Press, July 21, 1904). Tyree, a judge living in Missouri, was married, but still managed to fall in love with Dora. His family was horrified and took him on a train headed for California to get him away from her. Dora managed to get on the same train, and when the train reached California, the two of them eloped, although it’s unclear if they really did get married. Somehow, they ended up in Santa Barbara and bought this home in 1905. Perhaps the fact that it was then on the outskirts of the city appealed to them. The judge died in 1908. Dora sold the home to the Barber family and disappeared. The people of Santa Barbara probably gave a big sigh of relief. the freeway arrived. Across the street, the Oak Park Dairy stretched along Mission Creek for decades as it curved past Alamar. Pearl Barber, when she wasn’t busy taking care of 10 children, was a charter member of the Garfield School PTA, and she served as its president one year. The Santa Barbara City College School of Extended Learning’s Schott Center is there today. Grandson Ken Barber, who grew up in this home, remembers that there used to be a pasture with cows on the other side of Mission Creek. In 1914, when there was a record-breaking rainstorm, the creek flooded the home’s basement.

A
s the Indy’s event columnist, I am often asked what my favorite event is, so it seems time for a “favorites” story. In line with the column’s purpose to inform readers about especially worthy nonprofits, the criterion for making the list was the value of the organization to the community. CARE4Paws: With many pet owners through-
out the county struggling to make ends meet, CARE4Paws’ programs and services prevent pets from going hungry or without needed veterinary care. This nonprofit provides free and low-cost spay and neuter procedures (2,700 procedures this year), other veterinary care (more than 1,000 served this year), free pet food and supplies (3.5 million pet meals provided since the start of the pandemic), and foster care for pets of domestic violence victims. The more community support it receives, the more pets in need it can help. Its annual Happy Tails fundraiser is always fun and engaging. Santa Barbara Rescue Mission: This nonprofit
provides food and shelter year-round to anyone in need. It also runs 12-month residential treatment programs for substance abuse, which have success rates many times higher than national averages, yet operate at a fraction of the cost. Its dedicated team has found the secret sauce and year after year transforms lives. It receives no government funding, so it relies heavily on the community for support. Its enjoyable annual fundraiser, the Bayou, is held at the idyllic, secluded beach at Dos Pueblos Ranch. Storyteller Children’s Center: Storyteller serves
children from birth to 5 years old who face adverse circumstances, providing them with not only early childhood education, but also all the other pieces needed for social-emotional development. The aim is school readiness and lifelong
resiliency, with programming that extends to the families as well. Head Start funding covers less than half their costs, and with 48 kids on the wait list, this amazing nonprofit could do so much more good if it had the funds. Its annual Lunch with Love is aptly named, as the caring spirit of staff and supporters permeates the Rockwood Women’s Club venue. United Boys & Girls Clubs: UBGC, with seven
locations in the county, provides high-quality after-school programming for kids, many of whom would otherwise go home to empty homes. Programming and services go beyond the basic homework help and include sports, mentoring, education, fun activities, and more. Now they even offer daily hot meals — more than 3,600 hot meals were served last month. There are summer camps, holiday celebrations, and soon Saturday programming as well. Each year, their programming has an immensely positive impact on the lives of thousands of deserving kids. The annual Rally4Kids and Gala are great fun.

UCSB Arts & Lectures: If ranking events were
done solely on the enjoyment factor, then top of the list would be the receptions and dinners that UCSB Arts & Lectures holds for its donors with visiting artists and speakers. The intimacy of the gatherings makes the experience more immersive, and the discussions, whether with a scholar, dance troupe, or musician, are always fascinating. Donors recognize that their donations are necessary for Arts & Lectures to bring world-renowned artists and speakers to our small town. In addition to the main event, more than half of the talent brought here engages in valuable, inspiring education and outreach activities for K-12 students, UCSB students, and the community at large. BUILDING DREAMS TOGETHER: SBAOR AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY 2023
S
ince it's founding in this lovely city in 2000, Habitat for Humanity has made incredible progress in tackling the pressing need for affordable housing and assisting marginalized groups in Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara Association of Realtors (SBAOR) chose Habitat as their annual partner in 2023. Here are some of the successes and further details on Habitat that these two organizations have achieved together. They work incredibly well together. This year, I had the privilege of working with the incredible and committed leadership of Habitat for Humanity. This year, find out more about SBAOR's cooperation with Habitat. And I'm hoping you'll want to join in as well!. The goal of the nonprofit organization Habitat for Humanity is to construct and renovate houses for lowincome households. Their mission is to enable people who might not otherwise have access to affordable housing to do so through volunteer labor and financial and material donations. Habitat for Humanity Santa Barbara has increased its efforts in 2023 to tackle the area's housing crisis. The completion of multiple housing developments, which have made many families happy, is one of the major highlights. Construction of New Homes: Habitat for Humanity has successfully finished building a number of new homes in different Santa Barbara communities. These residences, which were constructed in cooperation with devoted volunteers and knowledgeable experts, are evidence of the organization's dedication to offering everyone access to safe and decent housing. Home Repairs and Renovations: The organization has
SBAOR's Partnership this year included: A "Community Beautification" day where REALTORS® and affiliates, who are lenders, title, escrow, etc., got together on the Eastside of Santa Barbara and spent the afternoon enjoying each other's company while walking the streets and cleaning up trash. We covered a ton of ground and picked up a lot of debris on the streets. The other workday was a "Brush With Kindness" afternoon with a family on the Westside that had home damage they did not have the means to fix. We went in as a partnership and repaired the damaged ceiling, room, flooring, and painting. This was a very rewarding project that addressed both safety concerns and gave peace of mind to the homeowner.
SBAOR also donated, as a result of being the beneficiary of our annual golf tournament, over $46,000 towards Habitat for Humanity programs. SBAOR was awarded the "Mover and Shaker" award this year from Habitat for an organization that not only contributed financially but also with boots on the ground and a physical presence and effort. Outside of these efforts, many REALTORS® and affiliates have volunteered their time and donated to help Habitat for Humanity to impact our community in a positive way.
